Interface-Engineered 2D Heterojunction with Photoelectric Dual Gain: Mxene@MOF-Enhanced SPR Spectroscopy for Direct Sensing of Exosomes

MXene is widely used in the construction of optoelectronic interfaces due to its excellent properties. However, the hydrophilicity and metastable surface of MXene lead to its oxidation behavior, resulting in the degradation of its various properties, which seriously limits its practical application. In this work, a 2D metal-organic framework (2D MOF) with matching 2D morphology, excellent stability performance, and outstanding optoelectronic performance is grown in situ on the MXene surface through heterojunction engineering to suppress the direct contact between reactive molecules and the inner layer material without affecting the original advantages of MXene. The photoelectric dual gain MXene@MOF heterojunction is confirmed. As a photoelectric material, its properties are highly suitable for the demand of interface sensitization layer materials of surface plasmon resonance (SPR). Therefore, using SPR as a platform for the application of this interface material, the performance of MXene@MOF and its potential mechanism to enhance SPR are analyzed in depth using experiments combined with simulation calculations (FDTD/DFT). Finally, the MXene@MOF/peptides-SPR sensor is constructed for rapid and sensitive detection of the cancer marker exosomes to explore its potential in practical applications. This work offers a forward-looking strategy for the design of interface materials with excellent photoelectric performance.

NiFeB-assisted adsorption and activation of nitrogen to improve the photooxidation activity of zinc porphyrin

This study effectively addresses the challenge of nitrogen adsorption and activation in photocatalytic nitrogen fixation by introducing an oxidizing co-catalyst, NiFeB hydroxides. The NiFeB hydroxides could provide reactive active sites and significantly enhance the nitrogen oxidation activity, offering a novel pathway for co-catalysts in nitrogen fixation reactions.

Direct Electrochemical Synthesis of Metal-Organic Frameworks: Cu3 (BTC)2 and Cu(TCPP) on Copper Thin films and Copper-Based Microstructures

Cu thin films and Cu2 O microstructures were partially converted to the Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) Cu3 (BTC)2 or Cu(TCPP) using an electrochemical process with a higher control and at milder conditions compared to the traditional solvothermal MOF synthesis. Initially, either a Cu thin film was sputtered, or different kinds of Cu or Cu2 O microstructures were electrochemically deposited onto a conductive ITO glass substrate. Then, these Cu thin films or Cu-based microstructures were subsequently coated with a thin layer of either Cu3 (BTC)2 or Cu(TCPP) by controlled anodic dissolution of the Cu-based substrate at room temperature and in the presence of the desired organic linker molecules: 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (BTC) or photoactive 4,4',4'',4'''-(Porphine-5,10,15,20-tetrayl) tetrakis(benzoic acid) (TCPP) in the electrolyte. An increase in size of the Cu micro cubes with exposed planes [100] of 38,7 % for the Cu2 O@Cu3 (BTC)2 and a 68,9 % increase for the Cu2 O@Cu(TCPP) was roughly estimated. Finally, XRD, Raman spectroscopy and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy were used to characterize the initial Cu films or Cu-based microstructures, and the obtained core-shell Cu2 O@Cu(BTC) and Cu2 O@Cu(TCPP) microstructures.

2D MOF-enhanced SPR detector based on tunable supramolecular probes for direct and sensitive detection of DOX in serum

Therapeutic drug monitoring of doxorubicin (DOX) is important to study pharmacokinetics in patients undergoing chemotherapy for reduction of side effects and improve patient survival by rationally controlling the dose of DOX. A fast and ultra-sensitive surface plasmon resonance (SPR) detector without sample pre-handling was developed for DOX monitoring. First, the two-dimensional metal-organic framework was modified on the Au film to enhance SPR, and then, the supramolecular probes with tunable cavity structure were self-assembled at the sensing interface for direct detection of DOX through specific host-guest interactions with a low detection limit of 60.24 pM. The precise monitoring of DOX in serum proved the possibility of clinical application with recoveries in the range 102.86-109.47%. The mechanisms of host-guest interactions between supramolecular and small-molecule drugs were explored in depth through first-principles calculations combined with SPR experiments. The study paves the way for designing facile and sensitive detectors and provides theoretical support and a new methodology for the specific detection of small molecules through calixarene cavity modulation.

Highly efficient electrochemical detection of H2O2 utilizing an innovative copper porphyrinic nanosheet decorated bismuth metal-organic framework modified electrode

The ability to detect hydrogen peroxide is important due to the presence in biological systems. Researchers are highly interested in developing efficient electrochemical hydrogen peroxide sensors. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with their composites, an emerging class of porous materials, are ideal candidates for heterogeneous catalysts because of their versatile functionalities. Using a facile solvothermal reaction, we fabricated a 2D Cu-TCPP nanosheet uniformly grown on a 3D Bi-MOF. The process takes advantage of the large surface area and pore volume of the Bi-MOF while maintaining the crystallinity of Bi-BTC when Cu-TCPP is added to the surface. The sensor was fabricated by depositing the Bi-BTC-Cu-TCPP nanocomposites on a glassy carbon electrode to conduct electrochemical measurements such as cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Finally, differential pulse voltammetry was utilized to investigate the effect of hydrogen peroxide on the electrochemical activity of Bi-BTC-Cu-TCPP deposited on a glassy carbon electrode. This electrode showed high electrochemical performance activity for the reduction of hydrogen peroxide. The sensor showed a linear response to H2O2 in the 10-120 μM concentration range, with a detection limit of 0.20 μM. The sensor was also stable and selective for H2O2 in the presence of other interfering species. This work demonstrates the potential of nanocomposite-based electrochemical sensors for sensitive and selective detection of H2O2. Besides, the modified electrode has many advantages, including remarkable catalytic activity, long-term stability, good reproducibility, and a good signal response during H2O2 reduction.

Ultrathin 2D-MOFs for dual-enzyme cascade biocatalysis with sensitive glucose detection performances

In recent years, two-dimensional nanosheet metal-organic frameworks (2D MOFs) have been widely considered as promising carriers for enzyme immobilization owing to their large surface area, designable and tunable structures, and other properties that enhance enzyme loading and modulate interactions with enzymes. In this study, a series of ultrathin 2D M-TCPP (M = Co, Ni, Zn, Cu) nanosheets were synthesized employing a surfactant-assisted bottom-up approach, and the effect of solvent ratio on the morphology and properties of 2D MOFs was explored. After systematic characterization, Cu-based 2D MOFs with large specific surface areas and excellent water stability was selected as the carrier for the co-immobilization of glucose oxidase (GOx) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP). The effects of adsorption and covalent immobilization strategies on bis-enzyme loading and enzyme activity, as well as their applications in rapid glucose detection, were systematically investigated. The results showed that A-CTGH and C-CTGH owned enzyme loadings of 187.9 and 249.1 mg/g, respectively, and exhibited superior enzymatic activity when exposed to harsh environments compared to free enzymes. In addition, the covalently immobilized biocatalyst based on GOx demonstrated a more sensitive glucose detection performance, including a wide linear range from 5.0 to 16 μM with a detection limit of 0.6 μM.

Pd nanoparticles decorated ultrathin 2D metal-organic framework nanosheets with enhanced peroxidase-mimic activity and colorimetric assay of glucose

In addition to size, shape and morphology, enzyme-mimetic property could be efficiently regulated by controlling composition, forming complexes or hybrids, and surface modification. Herein, Pd nanoparticles with an average diameter of 2.52 nm were decorated on ultrathin 2D copper(ii)-porphyrin derived metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets by a simple reduction method for catalytic activity regulation. In comparison with other nanozymes, the as-synthesized Pd modified 2D MOF hybrid nanosheets (Pd@Cu-TCPP(Fe)) presented excellent peroxidase-mimic activity, exhibiting an even superior catalytic ability towards H2O2 with a Michaelis-Menten constant as low as 2.33 mM. Based on a cascade reaction between glucose oxidase and Pd@Cu-TCPP(Fe), a colorimetric method for the detection of glucose was established and validated with a wide linear range (0.2-8.0 mM), good recovery (89.5-94.2%) and nice reproducibility (3.65%). All these features guaranteed its excellent ability for glucose determination in human cerebrospinal fluids. This study could offer a valuable reference for constructing novel optical biosensors.

Ultrafast Photocatalytic Detoxification of Mustard Gas Simulants by a Mesoporous Metal-Organic Framework with Dangling Porphyrin Molecules

Developing effective catalysts to degrade chemical warfare agents is of great significance. Herein, a mesoporous MIL-101(Cr) composite material dangled with porphyrin molecules (denote as TCPP@MIL-101(Cr), TCPP = tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin) is reported, which can be used as a heterogeneous photocatalyst for detoxification of mustard gas simulants 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES) to 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfoxide (CEESO) with a half-life of 1 min. The catalytic performance of TCPP@MIL-101(Cr) is comparable to that of homogeneous molecular porphyrin. Mechanistic studies reveal that both 1 O2 and O2 •- are efficiently generated and play vital roles in the oxidation reaction. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are attached to the TCPP@MIL-101(Cr) to further enhance the catalytic activity with a benchmark half-life of 45 s, which is the fastest record so far. A medical mask loaded TCPP@MIL-101(Cr) is fabricated for practical applications, which can selectively photoxidize CEES to CEESO under sunlight and air atmosphere, exhibiting the best degradation performance among the reported fabric-like composite materials.

2D MOF-enhanced SPR sensing platform: Facile and ultrasensitive detection of Sulfamethazine via supramolecular probe

Sulfamethazine (SMZ) is widely present in the environment and can cause severe allergic reactions and cancer in humans. Accurate and facile monitoring of SMZ is crucial for maintaining environmental safety, ecological balance, and human health. In this work, a real-time and label-free surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor was devised using a two-dimensional metal-organic framework with superior photoelectric performance as an SPR sensitizer. The supramolecular probe was incorporated at the sensing interface, allowing for the specific capture of SMZ from other analogous antibiotics through host-guest recognition. The intrinsic mechanism of the specific interaction of the supramolecular probe-SMZ was elucidated through the SPR selectivity test in combination with analysis by density functional theory, including p-π conjugation, size effect, electrostatic interaction, π-π stacking, and hydrophobic interaction. This method facilitates a facile and ultrasensitive detection of SMZ with a limit of detection of 75.54 pM. The accurate detection of SMZ in six environmental samples demonstrates the potential practical application of the sensor. Leveraging the specific recognition of supramolecular probes, this direct and simple approach offers a novel pathway for the development of novel SPR biosensors with outstanding sensitivity.

MOFs-based Fe@YAU-101/GCE electrochemical sensor platform for highly selective detecting trace multiplex heavy metal ions

The construction of sensors with specific recognition functions can easily, sensitively and efficiently detect heavy metal ions, which is a demand in the field of electrochemical sensing and an important topic in the detection of environmental pollutants. An electrochemical sensor based on MOFs composites was developed for sensing of multiplex metal ions. The large surface area, adjustable porosities and channels in MOFs facilitate successful loading of sufficient quantities highly active units. The active units and pore structures of MOFs are regulated and synergetic with each other to enhance the electrochemical activity of MOFs composites. Thus, the selectivity, sensitivity and reproducibility of MOFs composites have been improved. Fortunately, after characterization, Fe@YAU-101/GCE sensor with strong signal was successfully constructed. In the presence of target metal ions in solution, the Fe@YAU-101/GCE can efficiently and synchronously identify Hg²⁺, Pb²⁺, and Cd²⁺. The detection limits (LOD) are 6.67 × 10^-10 M(Cd²⁺), 3.33 × 10^-10 M(Pb²⁺) and 1.33 × 10^-8 M (Hg²⁺), and are superior to the permissible limits set by the National Environmental Protection Agency. The electrochemical sensor is simple without sophisticated instrumentation and testing processes, hence promising for practical applications.

A review on development of metal-organic framework-derived bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen electrodes in metal-air batteries

Worldwide demand for oil, coal, and natural gas has increased recently because of odd weather patterns and economies recovering from the pandemic. By using these fuels at an astonishing rate, their reserves are running low with each passing decade. Increased reliance on these sources is contributing significantly to both global warming and power shortage problems. It is vital to highlight and focus on using renewable energy sources for power production and storage. This review aims to discuss one of the cutting-edge technologies, metal-air batteries, which are currently being researched for energy storage applications. A battery that employs an external cathode of ambient air and an anode constructed of pure metal in which an electrolyte can be aqueous or aprotic electrolyte is termed as a metal-air battery (MAB). Due to their reportedly higher energy density, MABs are frequently hailed as the electrochemical energy storage of the future for applications like grid storage or electric car energy storage. The demand of the upcoming energy storage technologies can be satisfied by these MABs. The usage of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in metal-air batteries as a bi-functional electrocatalyst has been widely studied in the last decade. Metal ions or arrays bound to organic ligands to create one, two, or three-dimensional structures make up the family of molecules known as MOFs. They are a subclass of coordination polymers; metal nodes and organic linkers form different classes of these porous materials. Because of their modular design, they offer excellent synthetic tunability, enabling precise chemical and structural control that is highly desirable in electrode materials of MABs.

2D MOF Nanosensor-Integrated Digital Droplet Microfluidic Flow Cytometry for In Situ Detection of Multiple miRNAs in Single CTC Cells

Current circulating tumor cells (CTCs) detection strategies based on surface epithelial markers suffer from low specificity in distinguishing between CTCs and epithelial cells in hematopoietic cell population. Tumor-associated miRNAs within CTCs are emerging as new biomarkers due to their high correlation with tumor development and progress. However, in-situ simultaneous analysis of multiple miRNAs in single CTC cell is still challenging. To overcome this limitation, a digital droplet microfluidic flow cytometry based on biofunctionalized 2D metal-organic framework nanosensor (Nano-DMFC) is developed for in situ detection of dual miRNAs simultaneously in single living breast cancer cells. Here, 2D MOF-based fluorescent resonance energy transfer (FRET) nanosensors are established by conjugating dual-color fluorescence dye-labeled DNA probes on MOF nanosheet surface. In the Nano-DMFC, 2D MOF-based nanoprobes are precisely microinjected into each single-cell encapsulated droplets to achieve dual miRNA characterization in single cancer cell. This Nano-DMFC platform successfully detects dual miRNAs at single-cell resolution in 10 mixed positive MCF-7 cells out of 10 000 negative epithelial cells in serum biomimic samples. Moreover, this Nano-DMFC platform shows good reproductivity in the recovery experiment of spiked blood samples, which demonstrate the high potential for CTC-based cancer early diagnosis and prognosis.

Understanding the Performance of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Modulation of Nitric oxide Release from S-nitrosothiols

S-Nitrosothiols (RSNOs) which were important intermediates in circulating reservoirs of nitric oxide (NO), transport and numerous NO signaling pathway plays intricate roles in the etiology of several pathologies. However, it is still a challenge to control release of NO from nitrosylated compounds under physiological pH. In this paper, for the first time, we report the catalytic activity and kinetic study for modulation of NO release from RSNOs by an array of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) (M-MOF (M'); M = Zr, Cu; and M' = Cu, Pd, no metal) under physiological conditions via time-dependent absorbance spectra. The result showed that metal active site and the morphology and pore size of MOFs exhibited different activities toward RSNOs. The order of catalytic activity of these MOFs toward RSNOs is ordered in the decreasing sequence: Cu-MOF(Pd) ˃ Cu-MOF(Cu) ˃ Cu-MOF(no metal) ˃ Zr-MOF(Pd) ˃ Zr-MOF(Cu) ˃ Zr-MOF(no metal). In addition, Zr-MOF(Pd) was as model for cell experiment, demonstrated Zr-MOF(Pd) could react with RSNOs to generate NO in the complex environment of cell. Collectively, these findings establish a platform for MOFs-based, highly catalyze RSNOs in biological samples, a powerful tool for expanding the knowledge of the biology and chemistry of NO-mediated phenomena.

Rapid and sensitive detection of PD-L1 exosomes using Cu-TCPP 2D MOF as a SPR sensitizer

Two-dimensional metal organic framework (2D MOF Cu-TCPP) with significantly enhanced photoelectric properties was synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. The π-stacked electroactive porphyrin molecules of TCPP-based 2D MOF carry out charge transport in the MOF structure. The d-d band transition of Cu²⁺ and its 2D ultra-thin characteristics can produce excellent near-infrared light absorption to couple with SPR. Three key parameters including the refractive index sensitivity, detection accuracy and quality factor were improved significantly for 2D MOF modified gold chips. Especially, the refractive index sensitivity was increased from 98 to 137.67°/RIU after modified with 2D MOF. Thus, for the first time, we applied it as a signal enhancer to improve direct SPR assay for the Programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) exosomes. Owning to its large specific surface area, excellent photoelectric properties, highly ordered structure, good dispersion and biocompatibility, the LOD of the SPR sensor was 16.7 particles/mL. The reliability and practicability were further validated by analysis of PD-L1 exosomes in human serum samples. The recovery rate was 93.43 %-102.35%, with RSD of 5.79 %-14.6%. Given their excellent signal amplification ability, 2D MOF Cu-TCPP could serve as an ideal SPR sensitizer for rapid and sensitive detection of trace disease markers.

Metalloporphyrin-Decorated Titanium Dioxide Nanosheets for Efficient Photocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Reduction

In photocatalysis, the most efficient way to separate photogenerated electron-hole pairs has been extensively studied. However, the methods to increase the quantities of free electrons are neglected. Herein, we used a self-assembly method to fabricate MTCPP/TiO₂ composite materials with a series of metalloporphyrins (MTCPPs, M = Fe, Co, Zn) as sensitizers to modify TiO₂ nanosheets. First, abundant carboxyl and hydroxyl on porphyrin were adsorbed by metal ions. Then, the remaining carboxyl and hydroxyl on porphyrin were anchored on the surface of TiO₂ nanosheets. Finally, MTCPP/TiO₂ was obtained by a layer-by-layer self-assembly process. MTCPP broadens the light response of TiO₂ from ultraviolet light to visible light and enhances the CO₂ adsorption ability. Moreover, metal ions coordinating with porphyrin regulate the electron density of the porphyrin ring and provide a stronger π feedback bond, which promote charge separation. Consequently, by optimizing the type of metal ion, the yield of ZnTCPP/TiO₂ composites reached 109.33 μmol/(g h) of CO and 9.94 μmol/(g h) of CH₄, which was more than 50 times that of pure TiO₂. This study proposes a possible visible-light-induced CO₂ reduction mechanism of metal-ion-based photocatalysis, which provides great insights into optimizing the designation of efficient photocatalysis.

Cu (II)-porphyrin metal-organic framework/graphene oxide: synthesis, characterization, and application as a pH-responsive drug carrier for breast cancer treatment

A new multifunctional graphene oxide/Cu (II)-porphyrin MOF nanocomposite (CuG) comprised of Cu-TCPP MOF supported on graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets, has been fabricated by a solvothermal method at low temperature and one-pot process. Cu-TCPP MOF with universal advantages, such as high porosity, nontoxicity, large surface area, and safe biodegradation, combined with GO allows the achievement of an efficient doxorubicin loading (45.7%) and smart pH-responsive release for chemotherapy. More significantly, more than 97% of DOX was released by CuG at pH 5 which was more than that at pH 7.4 (~ 33.5%), while Cu-TCPP MOF displayed DOX release of 68.5% and 49% at pH 5 and 7.4, respectively, illustrating the effect of GO on the smart MOF construction for controllable releasing behavior in vitro. The results of in vitro anticancer experiments demonstrate that the developed nanocarrier exhibited slight or no cytotoxicity on normal cells, while the drug-loaded nanocarrier increased significant cancer cell-killing ability with higher therapeutic efficacy than free DOX, indicating the sustained release behavior of the CuG nanocarrier without any "burst effect". Moreover, the in vivo experiments demonstrated that the CuG-DOX exhibited significantly higher anticancer efficiency compared with free DOX. High anti-cancer therapeutic efficacy of this nanoscale carrier as an efficient pH sensitive agent, has the potential to enter further biomedical investigations. A new smart multifunctional graphene oxide-Cu (II)-porphyrin MOF nanocomposite (CuG) formed of Cu-TCPP MOF and graphene oxide (GO) has successfully fabricated and demonstrated an efficient pH-responsive drug release behavior in cancer therapy without using any targeting ligand.

High selective photocatalytic CO2 conversion into liquid solar fuel over a cobalt porphyrin-based metal-organic framework

In the present study, porphyrin-based metal-organic framework (Co/PMOF) was synthesized and characterized by different spectra analyses. The photoluminescence properties of porphyrin and Co/PMOF revealed that the photoluminescence of Co/PMOF was quenched compared to the porphyrin, indicating that the lifetime of photo-generated charge carriers in Co/PMOF is longer than porphyrin. The prepared Co/PMOF was applied as an efficient photocatalyst for CO₂ photoconversion to formate in the presence of triethanolamine (TEOA) as a sacrificial agent under visible-light irradiation. The photoreaction results showed that 23.21 µmol HCOO^- was produced over Co/PMOF during the 6 h photocatalytic reaction under visible illumination, showing much better activity than the porphyrin, 4.56 µmol HCOO^-. No other products were detected, suggesting that this reaction over Co/PMOF has high selectivity. Co/PMOF reusability and stability were examined through recycling tests and there were no remarkable losses of photoactivity even after three cycles of photoreaction. Moreover, FTIR measurement and UV-Vis spectra demonstrated no notable changes in Co/PMOF structure. As a result, superior photocatalytic behavior of Co/PMOF was implied for CO₂ photoreduction which highlights the great potential of assembly porphyrin and cobalt into MOFs for CO₂ photoreduction.

Amplified Electrochemical Hydrogen Peroxide Sensing Based on Cu-Porphyrin Metal-Organic Framework Nanofilm and G-Quadruplex-Hemin DNAzyme

A novel electrochemical hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) sensor based on Cu-porphyrin(Cu-TCPP)/G-quadruplex-hemin nanocomposite was constructed by assembling two-dimensional Cu-TCPP metal-organic framework (MOF) nanofilm and G-quadruplex-hemin DNAzyme. The Cu-TCPP synthesized by the surfactant-assisted method has a wrinkled two-dimensional nanofilm morphology, which gives it a large surface area and accessible active sites. Cu-TCPP exhibits peroxidase activity and good stability and can catalyze the reduction of H₂O₂. In addition, Cu-TCPP can be used as a nanocarrier for G-quadruplex-hemin DNAzyme with strong peroxidase activity to achieve "biological barcode" amplification and improve stability. The cooperative interaction of Cu-TCPP and G-quadruplex-hemin DNAzyme effectively amplifies the electrochemical response signal. Electrochemical studies have shown that the constructed sensor exhibits good electrochemical sensing performance with three linear ranges: 0.08 μM to 0.11 mM, 0.11-0.91 mM, and 0.91-8.1 mM, with sensitivities of 2315.86, 301.00, and 65.71 μA/(mM cm²), respectively, and the detection limit was 0.03 μM. In addition, the sensor shows good selectivity. In summary, this study provides a simple and effective new strategy for electrochemical sensing based on two-dimensional MOFs and artificial enzymes.

Microwave-assisted hydrothermal assembly of 2D copper-porphyrin metal-organic frameworks for the removal of dyes and antibiotics from water

Adsorption and photocatalysis are promising strategies to remove pollutants of dyes and antibiotics from wastewater. In this study, we demonstrate a rapid microwave-assisted hydrothermal route for the assembly of 2D copper-porphyrin Metal-Organic Frameworks (Cu-TCPP MOFs) within 1 h. The resulting 2D Cu-TCPP nanosheets with excellent crystallinity and a large surface area (342.72 m²/g) exhibited outstanding adsorption performance for typical dyes with adsorption capacities of about 185 mg/g for rhodamine B, 625 mg/g for methylene blue, and 290 mg/g for Congo red, respectively, as well as for representative antibiotics with adsorption capacities of about 130 mg/g for oxytocin, 150 mg/g for tetracycline, and 50 mg/g for norfloxacin, respectively. Meanwhile, the as-prepared 2D Cu-TCPP showed good photocatalytic degradation activity of pollutants after adsorption under irradiation by visible light, reaching removal efficiencies of 81.2 and 86.3% toward rhodamine B and norfloxacin, respectively. These results demonstrate the promising potential of 2D Cu-TCPP for use in the removal of contaminants from wastewater.

Tuning Internal Strain in Metal-Organic Frameworks via Vapor Phase Infiltration for CO2 Reduction

A gas-phase approach to form Zn coordination sites on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) by vapor-phase infiltration (VPI) was developed. Compared to Zn sites synthesized by the solution-phase method, VPI samples revealed approximately 2.8 % internal strain. Faradaic efficiency towards conversion of CO₂ to CO was enhanced by up to a factor of four, and the initial potential was positively shifted by 200-300 mV. Using element-specific X-ray absorption spectroscopy, the local coordination environment of the Zn center was determined to have square-pyramidal geometry with four Zn-N bonds in the equatorial plane and one Zn-OH₂ bond in the axial plane. The fine-tuned internal strain was further supported by monitoring changes in XRD and UV/Visible absorption spectra across a range of infiltration cycles. The ability to use internal strain to increase catalytic activity of MOFs suggests that applying this strategy will enhance intrinsic catalytic capabilities of a variety of porous materials.

Synthesis of a CdS-decorated Eu-MOF nanocomposite for the construction of a self-powered photoelectrochemical aptasensor

A composite of CdS nanoparticles and a europium metal organic framework (Eu-MOF) (CdS/Eu-MOF) was synthesized. The unique properties of MOFs help to improve the photoelectrochemical (PEC) properties of CdS by reducing charge carrier recombination and utilizing a broader spectrum for light harvesting. Under visible light illumination, the photocurrent of the CdS/Eu-MOF composite modified electrode was about 2.5-fold higher than that of the CdS modified electrode. When an ampicillin (AMP)-binding aptamer was immobilized on the CdS/Eu-MOF modified electrode as a recognition element, a self-powered PEC aptasensor exhibiting a specific photocurrent response to AMP was constructed. Several experimental conditions such as the ratio of CdS to MOF, the coating amount of the CdS/Eu-MOF suspension and the concentration of the aptamer were studied. Under optimum conditions, the photocurrent of the developed sensor was linearly related to the logarithm AMP concentration in the range of 1 × 10-10 to 2 × 10-7 M, with a detection limit (3S/N) of 9.3 × 10-11 M. Moreover, this sensor exhibited excellent selectivity, good repeatability and desirable stability. It was successfully applied to the detection of AMP in lake water and milk samples.

Non-enzymatic electrochemical hydrogen peroxide sensing using a nanocomposite prepared from silver nanoparticles and copper (II)-porphyrin derived metal-organic framework nanosheets

A non-enzymatic hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) electrochemical sensor material was prepared from silver nanoparticles and a 2D copper-porphyrin framework (MOF). The structure and morphology of the nanocomposite were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results showed that the MOF has a two-dimensional sheet structure, and a large number of Ag NPs are uniformly attached to it. The MOF also acts as a peroxidase mimic. The sensor has excellent catalytic performance in terms of H₂O₂ reduction. Figures of merit include (a) an electrochemical sensitivity of 21.6 μA mM^-1 cm^-2 at a typical working potential of -0.25 V (vs. SCE), (b) a detection limit of 1.2 μM (at S/N = 3), and (c) a linear response range that extends from 3.7 μM to 5.8 mM. Compared to other sensors of the same type, the linear range of the sensor is extended by an order of magnitude. Graphical abstract Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were reduced with sodium borohydride (NaBH₄) on the surface of copper(II)-porphyrin (Cu-TCPP) nanosheets prepared with the assistance of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). Their synergistic effect improved the performance of H₂O₂ sensor fabricated by immobilizing Ag NPs/Cu-TCPP nanocomposites on glassy carbon electrodes (GCE).

Water-Stable Chemical-Protective Textiles via Euhedral Surface-Oriented 2D Cu-TCPP Metal-Organic Frameworks

Abatement of chemical hazards using adsorptive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) attracts substantial attention, but material stability and crystal integration into functional systems remain key challenges. Herein, water-stable, polymer fiber surface-oriented M-TCPP [M = Cu, Zn, and Co; H₂ TCPP = 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin] 2D MOF crystals are fabricated using a facile hydroxy double salt (HDS) solid-source conversion strategy. For the first time, Cu-TCPP is formed from a solid source and confirmed to be highly adsorptive for NH₃ and 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES), a blistering agent simulant, in humid (80% relative humidity (RH)) conditions. Moreover, the solid HDS source is found as a unique new approach to control MOF thin-film crystal orientation, thereby facilitating radially arranged MOF crystals on fibers. On a per unit mass of MOF basis in humid conditions, the MOF/fiber composite enhances NH₃ adsorptive capacity by a factor of 3 compared to conventionally prepared MOF powders. The synthesis route extends to other MOF/fiber composite systems, therefore providing a new route for chemically protective materials.

Preparation of spherical metal-organic frameworks encapsulating ag nanoparticles and study on its antibacterial activity

A metal-organic frameworks (CuTCPP MOFs) were synthesized with Cu(NO₃)₂·3H₂O and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (TCPP) by the solvothermal method. The structure and morphology of the CuTCPP MOFs were characterized by UV-vis absorption spectra, X-ray diffraction (PXRD), energy dispersive spectra, scanning electron microscopy (EDS-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The structure of the as-synthesized MOF includes copper ions and copper metalloporphyrin (Cu-TCPP) by UV-vis absorption spectra and PXRD. The SEM and TEM images of the as-synthesized MOF showed the morphology of the CuTCPP MOFs were spherical. The as-synthesized spherical MOFs as the carriers were used to encapsulate the Ag nanoparticles and prepared Ag-CuTCPP MOFs. The Ag-CuTCPP MOFs was also characterized by UV-vis, PXRD, SEM and TEM. The Ag nanoparticles were completely encapsulated into the CuTCPP MOFs and no surface absorption, which have been confirmed by comparing TEM and SEM-EDS of Ag-CuTCPP MOFs before crushing with that of Ag-CuTCPP MOFs after crushing. In addition, the release of Ag ions from Ag-CuTCPP MOFs was also investigated by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES). Furthermore, the antimicrobial activities and cytotoxicity of Ag-CuTCPP MOFs were performed by in vitro and in vivo experiment. In vitro, the antibacterial effect of Ag-CuTCPP MOFs was even better than that of the penicillin as the positive control and the cytotoxicity of Ag-CuTCPP MOFs was significantly lower than that of naked Ag nanoparticles and Ag ions; in vivo, Ag-CuTCPP MOFs not only exhibited the excellently antibacterial effect and extremely low cytotoxicity but also effectively promoted the wound healing.

In Situ Synthesis of Metal Sulfide Nanoparticles Based on 2D Metal-Organic Framework Nanosheets

A facile in situ synthetic method is developed to synthesize metal sulfide nanoparticles based on 2D M-TCPP (M = Cu, Cd, or Co, TCPP = tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin)) metal-organic framework nanosheets. The obtained CuS/Cu-TCPP composite nanosheet is used as the active material in photoelectrochemical cells, showing notably increased photocurrent due to the improved exciton separation and charge carrier transport.

An efficient visible light photocatalyst based on tin porphyrin intercalated between TiO2–graphene nanosheets for inactivation of E. coli and investigation of charge transfer mechanism

Tin porphyrin intercalated between the TiO₂–grphene nanocomposite. The inactivation of E. coli over the prepared compound was significantly increased via the interaction of tin porphyrin between the TiO₂–graphene nanocomposite.

A Cd(ii) based metal organic framework: a photosensitive current conductor

A novel cadmium(ii) based metal organic framework, [Cd(3-bpd)(SCN)2]n () where 3-bpd = 1,4-bis(3-pyridyl)-2,3-diaza-1,3-butadiene has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, various spectroscopic techniques, TGA and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. X-ray analysis shows the formation of an undulated polymeric two-dimensional network parallel to the (0 -1 1) plane. Current conduction properties of have been explored in the dark and in the presence of light. The study shows that current conduction of the complex increases with the increase of the incident light intensity. On progression of intensity of glancing radiation the photosensitivity of has been increased. The time dependent light response on charge carrier conduction reveals that complex may uncover new ground to explore in optoelectronic switching applications.

Application of a novel 2D cadmium(ii)-MOF in the formation of a photo-switch with a substantial on–off ratio

Single crystal X-ray crystallography of a novel thiocyanate bridged 2D MOF has been reported along with its applicability in photosensitive devices. The band gap in the solid state has been determined and compared with the theoretical value.
