Ionic liquids with reversible photo-induced conductivity regulation in aqueous solution

Stimulus-responsive ionic liquids have gained significant attention for their applications in various areas. Herein, three kinds of azobenzimidazole ionic liquids with reversible photo-induced conductivity regulation were designed and synthesized. The change of electrical conductivity under UV/visible light irradiation in aqueous solution was studied, and the effect of chemical structure and concentration of ionic liquids containing azobenzene to the regulation of photoresponse conductivity were discussed. The results showed that exposing the ionic liquid aqueous solution to ultraviolet light significantly increased its conductivity. Ionic liquids with longer alkyl chains exhibited an even greater increase in conductivity, up to 75.5%. Then under the irradiation of visible light, the electrical conductivity of the solution returned to its initial value. Further exploration of the mechanism of the reversible photo-induced conductivity regulation of azobenzene ionic liquids aqueous solution indicated that this may attributed to the formation/dissociation of ionic liquids aggregates in aqueous solution induced by the isomerization of azobenzene under UV/visible light irradiation and resulted the reversible conductivity regulation. This work provides a way for the molecular designing and performance regulation of photo-responsive ionic liquid and were expected to be applied in devices with photoconductive switching and micro photocontrol properties.

Hybrid emulsifier systems: Alkyl imidazolium lactoside surfactants derived from natural resources

A new series of hybrid surfactants comprising an imidazolium as a cation and a disaccharide as a non-ion were synthesized, and their aggregation behavior was also investigated. The synthetic approach used alkylation as an easily accessible route on an imidazole to attempt an economic production followed by coupling with bromoethyl lactoside to form lacto-imidazolium salts surfactants. The coupled surfactants were obtained in almost quantitative yield over several steps. The surfactant surface properties in aqueous media were investigated, including critical micelle concentration (CMC), Krafft temperature, and emulsion stability were studied. The CMC measurements of the alkyl imidazolium lactoside surfactants are significantly lower than normal imidazolium surfactants, while the emulsion investigations encourage the use of alkyl imidazolium lactoside surfactants owing to stabilized assemble behavior as good as APGs.

Emerging impacts of ionic liquids on eco-environmental safety and human health

Owing to their unique physicochemical properties, ionic liquids (ILs) have been rapidly applied in diverse areas, such as organic synthesis, electrochemistry, analytical chemistry, functional materials, pharmaceutics, and biomedicine. The increase in the production and application of ILs has resulted in their release into aquatic and terrestrial environments. Because of their low vapor pressure, ILs cause very little pollution in the atmosphere compared to organic solvents. However, ILs are highly persistent in aquatic and terrestrial environments due to their stability, and therefore, potentially threaten the safety of eco-environments and human health. Specifically, the environmental translocation and retention of ILs, or their accumulation in organisms, are all related to their physiochemical properties, such as hydrophobicity. Based on results of ecotoxicity, cytotoxicity, and toxicity in mammalian models, the mechanisms involved in IL-induced toxicity include damage of cell membranes and induction of oxidative stress. Recently, artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques have been used in mining and modeling toxicity data to make meaningful predictions. Major future challenges are also discussed. This review will accelerate our understanding of the safety issues of ILs and serve as a guideline for the design of the next generation of ILs.

Temperature- and Composition-Induced Multiarchitectural Transitions in the Catanionic System of a Conventional Surfactant and a Surface-Active Ionic Liquid

The mixture of the cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), and anionic surface-active ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazoliumdodecyl sulfate (bmimDS), has been studied as a function of the mole fraction of CTAB, X _CTAB, with the total surfactant concentration fixed at 50 mM using turbidity measurements, rheology, dynamic light scattering, differential scanning calorimetry, small-angle neutron scattering, and small-angle X-ray scattering techniques. The catanionic mixture has been found to exhibit phase transitions from vesicles to micelles as a function of temperature, with some mole fractions of CTAB showing dual transitions. Solutions of X _CTAB = 0.2 to 0.5 exhibited a single transition from vesicles to cylindrical micelles at 45 °C. With an increase in the mole fraction of CTAB from 0.55 to 0.65, dual structural transitions at 30 and 45 °C were observed. The microstructural transition at 30 °C is ascribed to the vesicle aggregation process with smaller vesicles fusing into bigger ones, whereas the transition at 45 °C was evaluated to be the vesicle-to-cylindrical micelle transition. However, at higher mole fractions of CTAB, X _CTAB from 0.65 to 0.90, a single transition from vesicles to small cylindrical/spherical micelles was observed in the solutions, at a lower temperature of 30 °C. To the best of our knowledge, such a microstructural transitions as a function of temperature in a single mixture of cationic and anionic surfactants without any additive has not been reported so far.

Large scale and facile sonochemical synthesis of magnetic graphene oxide nanocomposites and their dual electro/magneto-stimuli responses

Magnetic Fe₃O₄/GO nanocomposites have been prepared via an effective electrostatic strategy under ultrasonic waves. Their appealing dual electro/magnetorheological (ER/MR) performances were investigated under applied electric or magnetic fields.

Self-assembly structural transition of protic ionic liquids and P123 for inducing hierarchical porous materials

Hierarchical micro–mesoporous silica–zirconium has been obtained by a simple procedure by adjusting the interaction between protic ionic liquids (NTA) and Pluronic 123 surfactant in acidic media through changing the content of NTA and the pH of the solutions.

Light-modulated aggregation behavior of some unsubstituted cinnamate-based ionic liquids in aqueous solutions
