Multidentate polyoxometalate modification of metal nanoparticles with tunable electronic states

To respond to the increasing demands for practical applications, stabilization and property modulation of metal nanoparticles have emerged as a key research subject. Herein, we present a viable protocol for preparing small metal nanoparticles (<5 nm; Ag, Pd, Pt, and Ru) via multidentate polyoxometalate (POM, [SiW9O34]10-) modification. In addition to enhancing stability, the POMs can modulate the electronic states of metal nanoparticles. Moreover, immobilization of the POM-modified metal nanoparticles on solid supports enables further tuning of the electronic states via a cooperative effect between the POMs and the supports without altering the particle size. Notably, POM-modified Pd nanoparticles on carbon support exhibited superior catalytic activity and selectivity in hydrogenation reactions in comparison with the catalyst without the POM modification.

Growth of polyoxomolybdate with a porous pyramidal structure on carbon xerogel nanodiamond as an efficient electro-catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction

The slow kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) limits the large-scale usage of the fuel cells. Thus, it is crucial to develop an efficient and stable electrocatalyst for the ORR. Herein, facile synthesis of three-dimensional nitrogen-doped carbon xerogel diamond nanoparticles, CDNPs support is reported. The as-prepared CDNPs support was functionalized with a Keggin-type polyoxomolybdate via the hydrothermal process (POM@CDNPs). As the characterization techniques revealed, this nanocomposite possesses a three-dimensional structure, high density of nitrogen doping, and well-dispersed porous pyramidal morphology of POM, making it a promising catalyst for ORR in alkaline medium. The POM@CDNPs nanocomposite exhibits an outstanding activity for ORR with a limiting current density that reaches -7.30 mA cm^-2 at 0.17 V vs. RHE. Moreover, a half-wave potential of 0.773 V is delivered with a stability of about 99.9% after the 100th repetitive cycle as this catalyst forces the ORR to the direct-four-electron pathway. This work spots the advantages of hybridizing the sp³ of the nanodiamond with the sp² of the carbon xerogels to increase the conductivity of the support material. In addition, the role of the porous pyramidal morphology of the POM on the activity of the nanocomposite was evaluated. This study suggests using advanced carbon-based electro-catalysts with outstanding activity and stability.

Toward Sustainable Tackling of Biofouling Implications and Improved Performance of TFC FO Membranes Modified by Ag-MOF Nanorods

In this work, nanorods with high antibacterial properties were synthesized with silver acetate as the metal source and 2-aminoterephthalic acid as the organic linker and were then embedded into thin-film composite (TFC) membranes to amend their performance as well as to alleviate biofouling. Silver metal-organic framework (Ag-MOF) nanorods with a length smaller than 40 nm were incorporated within the polyamide thin selective layer of the membranes during interfacial polymerization. The interaction of the synthesized nanorods with the polyamide was favored because of the presence of amine-containing functional groups on the nanorod's surface. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy characterizations proved the presence of Ag-MOF nanorods in the selective layer of thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes. TFN membranes demonstrated improved water permeance, salt selectivity, and superior antibacterial properties. Specifically, the increased hydrophilicity and antibacterial potential of the TFN membranes led to a synergetic effect toward biofouling mitigation. The number of live bacteria attached to the surface of the neat TFC membrane decreased by more than 92% when a low amount of Ag-MOF nanorods (0.2 wt %) was applied. Following contact of the TFN membrane surface with Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, full inactivation, and degradation of bacteria cells were observed with microscopy, colony-forming unit tests, and disc inhibition zone analyses. This result translated to a negligible amount of the biofilm formed on the active layer. Indeed, the incorporation of Ag-MOF nanorods decreased the metal-ion release rate and therefore provided prolonged antibacterial performance.

In Situ Ag-MOF Growth on Pre-Grafted Zwitterions Imparts Outstanding Antifouling Properties to Forward Osmosis Membranes

In this study, a polyamide forward osmosis membrane was functionalized with zwitterions followed by the in situ growth of metal-organic frameworks with silver as a metal core (Ag-MOFs) to improve its antibacterial and antifouling activity. First, 3-bromopropionic acid was grafted onto the membrane surface after its activation with N,N-diethylethylenediamine. Then, the in situ growth of Ag-MOFs was achieved by a simple membrane immersion sequentially in a silver nitrate solution and in a ligand solution (2-methylimidazole), exploiting the underlying zwitterions as binding sites for the metal. The successful membrane functionalization and the enhanced surface wettability were verified through an array of characterization techniques. When evaluated in forward osmosis tests, the modified membranes exhibited high performance and improved permeability compared to pristine membranes. Static antibacterial experiments, evaluated by confocal microscopy and colony-forming unit plate count, resulted in a 77% increase in the bacterial inhibition rate due to the activity of the Ag-MOFs. Microscopy micrographs of the Escherichia coli bacteria suggested the deterioration of the biological cells. The antifouling properties of the functionalized membranes translated into a significantly lower flux decline in forward osmosis filtrations. These modified surfaces displayed negligible depletion of silver ions over 30 days, confirming the stable immobilization of Ag-MOFs on their surface.

Electrochemical Reduction-Assisted In Situ Fabrication of a Graphene/Au Nanoparticles@polyoxometalate Nanohybrid Film: High-Performance Electrochemical Detection for Uric Acid

Nanohybrid films had attracted much attention owning to the enhancement of catalytic activity. However, the fabrication time took hours to days, no matter if it was the preparation of nanohybrids or the assembly process. Furthermore, the catalytic efficiency of the nanohybrid film still remained to improve. In this paper, a reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/gold nanoparticles (Au NPs)@polyoxometalate (POM) nanohybrid film was successfully fabricated by combining electrodeposition and electrochemical reduction in situ processes. The assembly process involving no organic or polymer linker molecules [except for a precursor poly(ethylenimine) (PEI) coating for indium tin oxide (ITO)] can be completed within 1 h. The reduced POM K₆[P₂W₁₈O₆₂]·19H₂O (P₂W₁₈) was employed as reducing agents and bridging molecules for rGO and Au nanoparticles and the encapsulating molecules for the Au nanoparticles. The most interesting one is the {rGO/Au@P₂W₁₈} modified electrode loading only the monolayer catalyst of Au@P₂W₁₈ and exhibiting comparable, even better electrochemical detection performance toward uric acid than other sensors with three to eight layers of the catalyst. The amperometric detection displayed a great sensitivity, lower detection limit, wide linear range, good long-time stability, superior selectivity, and reproducibility. The enhanced catalytic property may attribute to the improved conductivity of the film without organic or polymer linker molecules (except for a precursor PEI coating) and the electron transfer in the process of film fabrication.

Polyoxometalates/Active Carbon Thin Separator for Improving Cycle Performance of Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have great potential for the next generation of energy-storage devices owing to their high theoretical energy density. However, the polysulfides' shuttling effect seriously degraded the cycle stability and capacity and hindered their commercial applications. Here, we design and fabricate a bifunctional composite separator including a polypropylene (PP) matrix layer and Keggin polyoxometalate [PW₁₂O₄₀]^3-/Super P composite retarding layer by utilizing the Coulombic repulsion between polyanion and polysulfides. Such a binary composite separator shows the effects in enhancing the Coulombic efficiency and cycling stability. Compared with the polypropylene (PP) matrix separator, the capacity is improved by 41% after 120 cycles when using the PW₁₂/Super P separator. It is the first time that the polyoxometalate (POM) matrix is used as a bifunctional separator for lithium-sulfur batteries, demonstrating the promise of POM-based separators in reducing the shuttling effect of Li-S battery.

Polyoxotungstate@Carbon Nanocomposites As Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) Electrocatalysts

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has a crucial function as the cathode reaction in energy-converting systems, such as fuel cells (FCs), which contributes to a sustainable energy supply. However, the current use of precious Pt-based electrocatalysts (ECs) is a major drawback for the economic viability of fuel cells. Hence, it is urgent to develop cost-effective and efficient electrocatalysts (ECs) without noble metals to substitute the Pt-based ECs. Herein, we report the preparation and application as ORR electrocatalysts of four new nanocomposites based on sandwich-type phosphotungstate (TBA)₇H₃[Co₄(H₂O)₂(PW₉O₃₄)₂] (TBA-Co₄(PW₉)₂) immobilized onto different carbon nanomaterials [single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT), graphene flakes (GF), carbon nanotubes doped with nitrogen (N-CNT), and nitrogen-doped few layer graphene (N-FLG)]. In alkaline medium, the four nanocomposites studied presented comparable onset potentials (0.77-0.90 V vs RHE), which are similar to that observed for Pt/C (0.91 V vs RHE). Higher diffusion-limiting current densities ( j_L,_{0.26V,1600 rpm} = -168.3 mA cm^-2 mg^-1) were obtained for Co₄(PW₉)₂@N-CNT, as compared to Pt/C electrode -130.0 mA cm^-2 mg^-1) and the other ECs (-45.0, -50.7, and -87.5 mA cm^-2 mg^-1 for Co₄(PW₉)₂@SWCNT, Co₄(PW₉)₂@GF, and Co₄(PW₉)₂@N-FLG, respectively). All the Co₄(PW₉)₂@CM ECs showed selectivity toward direct O₂ reduction to water with the exception of Co₄(PW₉)₂@GF where a mixture of the 2- and 4-electron mechanisms is observed. Furthermore, low Tafel slopes were obtained for all the nanocomposites (68-96 mV dec^-1). Co₄(PW₉)₂@CM ECs also showed excellent tolerance to methanol with no significant changes in current density, in contrast to Pt/C (decrease of ≈59% after methanol addition) and good long-term electrochemical stability with current retentions between 75 and 84%.
