Self-Assembled Monolayers of a Fluorinated Phosphonic Acid as a Protective Coating on Aluminum

Aluminum (Al) placed in hot water (HW) at 90 °C is roughened due to its reaction with water, forming Al hydroxide and Al oxide, as well as releasing hydrogen gas. The roughened surface is thus hydrophilic and possesses a hugely increased surface area, which can be useful in applications requiring hydrophilicity and increased surface area, such as atmospheric moisture harvesting. On the other hand, when using HW to roughen specified areas of an Al substrate, ways to protect the other areas from HW attacks are necessary. We demonstrated that self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of a fluorinated phosphonic acid (FPA, CF3(CF2)13(CH2)2P(=O)(OH)2) derivatized on the native oxide of an Al film protected the underneath metal substrate from HW attack. The intact wettability and surface morphology of FPA-derivatized Al subjected to HW treatment were examined using contact angle measurement, and scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, respectively. Moreover, the surface and interface chemistry of FPA-derivatized Al before and after HW treatment were investigated by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), verifying that the FPA SAMs were intact upon HW treatment. The ToF-SIMS results therefore explained, on the molecular level, why HW treatment did not affect the underneath Al at all. FPA derivatization is thus expected to be developed as a patterning method for the formation of hydrophilic and hydrophobic areas on Al when combined with HW treatment.

Novel fabrication of mixed wettability micromodels for pore-scale studies of fluid-rock interactions

Wettability plays a crucial role in multiphase fluid flow in porous media, impacting various geological applications such as hydrocarbon extraction, aquifer remediation, and carbon dioxide sequestration. Microfluidic methods have attracted interest for their capacity to explore and visualize essential multiphase flow dynamics at the pore level, mimicking actual rock pore structures. However, creating micromodels with representative mixed wettability is currently a challenge. Existing technology is limited to producing micromodels with a singular wettability, either water-wet or oil-wet, leaving a gap in representing mixed-wet scenarios. In this study, we introduce a novel method to fabricate microfluidic devices with controlled spatial distribution of wettability at the micro-scale, mimicking actual configurations of mixed-wet rocks arising from varied mineralogy and pore structures. The proposed method combines the soft lithography process with thin film deposition techniques. The micromodels were designed to mimic the pore network of actual reservoir rocks, and a silicon substrate served as the foundation for the photolithography process optimization and wettability alteration methodology. Perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane coating was applied using molecular vapor deposition technology for surface wettability modification. The coated parts of the microdevice substrate altered the localized wetting state of the silicon towards hydrophobic, while the wettability remained unchanged in the non-coated areas. We utilized surface measurements, including contact angle, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy, to assess the wettability, composition, thickness, shape, roughness, and overall quality of the coating. Our fabrication process successfully produced a microfluidics device with tailored mixed-wet attributes at the micro-scale, which is, to our best knowledge, the first achievement in the field. This method enables the replication of mixed-wet characteristics commonly seen in various applications, such as carbonates and shales within underground rocks, providing a more accurate examination of fundamental multiphase fluid dynamics and rock interactions at the pore level.

Anchor Group Bottlebrush Polymers as Oil Additive Friction Modifiers

Surface-tethered polymers have been shown to be an efficient lubrication strategy for boundary and mixed lubrication by providing a solvated film between solid surfaces. We have assessed the performance of various graft copolymers as friction modifier additives in oil and revealed important structure-property relationships for this application. The polymers consisted of an oil-soluble, grafted poly(lauryl acrylate) segment and a polar, linear poly(4-acryloylmorpholine) anchor group. Reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization was used to access various architectures with control of the grafting density and position of the anchor group. Macrotribological studies displayed promising results with ≈50% reduction in friction coefficient at low polymer treatment rates. QCM-D experiments, neutron reflectometry, small-angle neutron scattering, and atomic force microscopy were used to gather detailed information on these polymers' surface adsorption characteristics, film structure, and solution behavior.

Grafting Behavior of Amine Ligands for Surface Modification of MXene

Surface modification to improve the oxidation stability and dispersibility of MXene in diverse organic media is a facile strategy for broadening its application. Among the various ligands that can be grafted on the MXene surface, oleylamine (OAm), with amine functionalities, is an advantageous candidate owing to its strong interactions and commercial viability. OAms are grafted onto MXene through covalent bonds induced by nucleophilic reactions and H bonds in liquid interface reactions at room temperature. In addition, this grafting behavior of the ligand was characterized by a reduction in the slope with an increase in the ligand concentration (C_l), confirming that the OAms were grafted via Langmuir-like behavior, and the monolayer of OAms was developed via two distinct steps (I: lying-down phase; II: ordered monolayer). MXene nanosheets modified by OAm (OAm-MX) are highly dispersible in a wide range of organic solvents owing to the alkyl chain of the OAms, which induces hydrophobic properties on the surface of MXene. The OAm-MX dispersion exhibits outstanding oxidation and dispersion stability and remarkable coating performance on a wide range of substrates owing to their excellent solution processability. Therefore, this study provides fundamental insights into the adsorption behavior and interaction between amine ligands and MXene nanosheets for the surface chemistry of MXene.

Theoretical analysis of the elastic free energy contributions to polymer brushes in poor solvent: A refined mean-field theory

We consider polymer brushes in poor solvent that are grafted onto planar substrates and onto the internal and external surfaces of a cylinder using molecular dynamics simulation, self-consistent field (SCF), and mean-field theory. We derive a unified expression for the mean field free energy for the three geometrical classes. While for low grafting densities, the effect of chain elasticity can be neglected in poor solvent conditions, it becomes relevant at higher grafting densities and, in particular, for concave geometries. Based on the analysis of the end monomer distribution, we introduce an analytical term that describes the elasticity as a function of grafting density. The accuracy of the model is validated with molecular dynamics simulations as well as SCF computations and shown to yield precise values for the layer thickness over a wide range of system parameters. We further apply this model to analyze the gating behavior of switchable brushes inside nanochannels.

Synergistic Lubrication Effect between Oxidized Black Phosphorus and Oil Molecules Triggers Superlubricity

Oxidized black phosphorus (BP) has been demonstrated as a promising oil-based nanoadditive because of its superior friction-reducing capability. However, the synergistic lubrication effect between oxidized BP and oil at the molecular level dominating the friction properties remains unclear. In this Letter, the synergistic lubrication effect between oxidized BP and two typical oil molecules (nonane and nonanoic acid) was explored with an atomic force microscope. The superlubricity of oxidized BP with an ultralow friction coefficient of 0.006 was achieved in the nonanoic acid environment, exhibiting a 96% reduction compared with that in the nonane environment. There was a confined nonanoic acid layer in the contact zone with a tilt angle of 35° because of the hydrogen bonding interaction, contributing to the superlubricity. This observation sheds light on the exploration of the lubrication mechanism of oxidized BP as a nanoadditive in oil, which reveals the considerable implications for the design of high-performance lubrication system.

Controlling fine touch sensations with polymer tacticity and crystallinity

The friction generated between a finger and an object forms the mechanical stimuli behind fine touch perception. To control friction, and therefore tactile perception, current haptic devices typically rely on physical features like bumps or pins, but chemical and microscale morphology of surfaces could be harnessed to recreate a wider variety of tactile sensations. Here, we sought to develop a new way to create tactile sensations by relying on differences in microstructure as quantified by the degree of crystallinity in polymer films. To isolate crystallinity, we used polystyrene films with the same chemical formula and number averaged molecular weights, but which differed in tacticity and annealing conditions. These films were also sufficiently thin as to be rigid which minimized effects from bulk stiffness and had variations in roughness lower than detectable by humans. To connect crystallinity to human perception, we performed mechanical testing with a mock finger to form predictions about the degree of crystallinity necessary to result in successful discrimination by human subjects. Psychophysical testing verified that humans could discriminate surfaces which differed only in the degree of crystallinity. Although related, human performance was not strongly correlated with a straightforward difference in the degree of crystallinity. Rather, human performance was better explained by quantifying transitions in steady to unsteady sliding and the generation of slow frictional waves (r² = 79.6%). Tuning fine touch with polymer crystallinity may lead to better engineering of existing haptic interfaces or lead to new classes of actuators based on changes in microstructure.

Short vs. long chains competition during “grafting to” process from melt

A preferential grafting of short chains occurs during the “grafting to” reaction of hydroxy terminated P(S-st-MMA) blends consisting of short and long chains. The enrichment is enhanced when the chain length difference increases.

Development of an Electrochemical CCL17/TARC Biosensor toward Rapid Triage and Monitoring of Classic Hodgkin Lymphoma

A point-of-care blood test for the detection of an emerging biomarker, CCL17/TARC, could prove transformative for the clinical management of classic Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL). Primary care diagnosis is challenging due to nonspecific clinical presentation and lack of a diagnostic test, leading to significant diagnostic delays. Treatment monitoring encounters false-positive and negative results, leading to avoidable chemotherapy toxicity, or undertreatment, impacting patient morbidity and mortality. Here, we present an amperometric CCL17/TARC immunosensor, based on the utilization of a thiolated heterobifunctional cross-linker and sandwich antibody assay, to facilitate novel primary care triage and chemotherapy monitoring strategies for cHL. The immunosensor shows excellent analytical performance for clinical testing; linearity (R² = 0.986), detection limit (194 pg/mL), and lower and upper limits of quantitation (387-50 000 pg/mL). The biosensor differentiated all 42 newly diagnosed cHL patients from healthy volunteers, based on serum CCL17/TARC concentration, using blood samples collected prior to treatment intervention. The immunosensor also discriminated between paired blood samples of all seven cHL patients, respectively, collected prior to treatment and during chemotherapy, attributed to the decrease in serum CCL17/TARC concentration following chemotherapy response. Overall, we have shown, for the first time, the potential of an electrochemical CCL17/TARC biosensor for primary care triage and chemotherapy monitoring for cHL, which would have positive clinical and psychosocial implications for patients, while streamlining current healthcare pathways.

Slow-release lubrication of artificial joints using self-healing polyvinyl alcohol/polyethylene glycol/ graphene oxide hydrogel

New fabrication methods and lubrication materials must be developed to improve the lubrication performance of artificial joints and increase the lubrication duration. Herein, a novel polyvinyl alcohol/polyethylene glycol/graphene oxide (PVA/PEG/GO) hydrogel was prepared by a physical cross-linking method, and then the hydrogel and its sustained-release solution were used as lubricant for friction evaluation. The results demonstrated that the slow-release gel solution has good lubrication performance, and coefficient of friction (COF) is only 0.04, which is much lower than the COF of distilled water (about 0.08) under the same conditions. The structure characterization results revealed that no new materials are formed in the gel. The results of thermogravimetric analyses and differential scanning calorimetry demonstrated that the addition of GO may improve the network crosslinking structure of the PVA/PEG hydrogel and improve its mechanical strength. In addition, PVA/PEG/GO hydrogel has superior self-healing function. The self-healing hydrogel did not break again after being pulled under 200 G of weights. The PVA/PEG/GO hydrogel with excellent slow-release lubricating performance and self-healing properties provides a novel candidate for design of long-term lubricating artificial joints, and is expected to promote the progress of artificial joint lubrication applications.

Self-Assembled Monolayers for Batteries

Current studies in the Li-battery field are focusing on building systems with higher energy density than ever before. The path toward this goal, however, should not ignore aspects such as safety, stability, and cycling life. These issues frequently originate from interfacial instability, and therefore, precise surface chemistry that allows for accurate control of material surface and interfaces is much in demand for advanced battery research. Molecular self-assembly as a surface chemistry tool is considered to surpass many conventional coating techniques due to its intrinsic merits such as spontaneous organization, molecular-scale uniformity, and structural diversity. Recent publications have demonstrated the power of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) in addressing pressing issues in the battery field such as the chemical stability of Li, but many more investigations are needed to fully explore the potential and impact of this technique on energy storage. This perspective is the first of its kind devoted to SAMs in batteries and related materials. Recent research progress on SAMs in batteries is reviewed and mainly falls in two categories, including the improvement of chemical stability and the regulation of nucleation in conversion electrode reactions. Future applications and consideration of SAMs in energy storage are discussed. We believe these summaries and outlooks are highly stimulative and may benefit future advancements in battery chemistry.

Surface chemical reactions on self-assembled silane based monolayers

In this review, we aim to update our review "Chemical modification of self-assembled silane-based monolayers by surface reactions" which was published in 2010 and has developed into an important guiding tool for researchers working on the modification of solid substrate surface properties by chemical modification of silane-based self-assembled monolayers. Due to the rapid development of this field of research in the last decade, the utilization of chemical functionalities in self-assembled monolayers has been significantly improved and some new processes were introduced in chemical surface reactions for tailoring the properties of solid substrates. Thus, it is time to update the developments in the surface functionalization of silane-based molecules. Hence, after a short introduction on self-assembled monolayers, this review focuses on a series of chemical reactions, i.e., nucleophilic substitution, click chemistry, supramolecular modification, photochemical reaction, and other reactions, which have been applied for the modification of hydroxyl-terminated substrates, like silicon and glass, which have been reported during the last 10 years.

A quantum chemical study of substituent effects on CN bonds in aryl isocyanide molecules adsorbed on the Pt surface

A periodicity implemented scheme of natural bond orbital (NBO) theory and normal mode analysis has been employed to investigate the tendency of the chemical bond strength of aryl isocyanide molecules with different para-substituted groups adsorbed on the Pt(111) surface. The NC bond order shows a clear correspondence with the NC stretching frequency; both of them exhibit a "volcano-like" profile as a function of the Hammett constant of the para-substituted groups for isolated molecules. When a molecule is adsorbed on the Pt(111) surface, the NC stretching frequency variations are determined by the resultant effect of σ donation and π back-donation between the molecule and the surface. The present comprehensive and systematic computations clarify the electron donating and withdrawing effects of the substituted groups on the interaction between the aryl isocyanide molecule and the transition metal substrate.

Differentiation of Rat Mesenchymal Stem Cells toward Osteogenic Lineage on Extracellular Matrix Protein Gradients

This report addresses the issue of optimizing extracellular matrix protein density required to support osteogenic lineage differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) by culturing MSCs on surface-bound density gradients of immobilized collagen type I (COL1) and osteopontin (OPN). A chemical surface gradient is prepared by tailoring the surface chemical composition from high hydroxyl groups to aldehyde groups using a diffusion-controlled plasma polymerization technique. Osteogenesis on the gradient surface is determined by immunofluorescence staining against Runx2 as an early marker and by staining of calcium phosphate deposits as a late stage differentiation marker. The Runx2 intensity and calcified area increase with increasing COL1 density up to a critical value corresponding to 124.2 ng cm^-2 , above which cell attachment and differentiation do not rise further, while this critical value for OPN is 19.0 ng cm^-2 . This gradient approach may facilitate the screening of an optimal biomolecule surface density on tissue-engineered scaffolds, implants, or tissue culture ware to obtain the desired cell response, and may generate opportunities for more cost-effective regenerative medicine.

Wetting Behavior and Tribological Properties of Polymer Brushes on Laser-Textured Surface

Polymer brush layers can act as effective lubricants owing to their low friction and good controllability. However, their application to the field of tribology is limited by their poor wear resistance. This study proposes a strategy combining grafting and surface texturing to extend the service life of polymer brushes. Surface microstructure and chemical composition were measured through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Water contact angles were measured to evaluate the surface wettability of the grafted silicon-based surface texture. Results showed the distinct synergistic effect between polymer brushes and laser surface texturing (LST). The prepared polymer brushes on textured surface can be a powerful mechanism for friction reduction properties, which benefit from their strong hydration effect on the lubrication liquid and promote the formation of a local lubricating film. Moreover, the wear life of polymer brushes can be immensely extended, as micro-dimples on the textured surface can effectively protect the polymer brushes. This study presents a method to enhance the load-bearing capacity and wear resistance of the grafted surface of polymer brushes.

DABCO bond cleavage for the synthesis of piperazine derivatives

The applications of DABCO (1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane) in the synthesis of piperazine derivatives including biologically active compounds via C–N bond cleavage are investigated in this review. Different reagents such as alkyl halides, aryl(heteroary) halides, carboxylic acids, diaryliodonium salts, tosyl halides, activated alkynes, benzynes etc. were applied for the preparation of the corresponding quaternary ammonium salts of DABCO, which are very good electrophiles for various nucleophiles such as phenols, thiophenols, thiols, alcohols, aliphatic and aromatic amines, sulfinates, phthalimide, indoles, NaN₃, triazole and terazoles, NaCN, enols and enolates, halides, carboxylic acid salts etc. Besides preactivated DABCO salts, the in situ activation of DABCO in multicomponent reactions is also an efficient tactic in synthetic organic chemistry for the diversity oriented synthesis of drug-like piperazine derivatives.

The applications of DABCO (1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane) in the synthesis of piperazine derivatives including biologically active compounds via C–N bond cleavage are investigated in this review.

Carbon dots intensified poly (ethylene glycol)/chitosan/sodium glycerophosphate hydrogel as artificial synovium tissue with slow-release lubricant

The ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and metal artificial joint pair is limited by wear debris and short service life. Here we report the development of a hydrogel which exhibits lubricant release to intensify the lubrication effect of artificial joints.This study adopted an injectable method to prepare carbon dots/poly (ethylene glycol)/chitosan/sodium glycerophosphate (CDs/PEG/CS/GP) composite hydrogel, and the carbon dots were used to intensify the rheological and mechanical properties. In addition, the composite hydrogel had slow-release properties, and the release solution contained CDs, PEG and GP has excellent lubrication effect. At last, the MTT assay, LIVE/DEAD staining, H&E staining results and safety evaluation in BALC/c mice proved that the hydrogels had good biocompatibilility and were safety for application in vivo.

Poly(ethylene glycol)/chitosan/sodium glycerophosphate gel replaced the joint capsule with slow-release lubricant after joint surgery

Body fluid is normally the only lubricant after joint replacement surgery, but wear problems have occurred because body fluid has poor lubrication ability. However, traditional lubricant would be diluted by body fluids and then absorbed by the human body. Therefore, an injectable gel with the ability to slow-release lubricant was designed to replace the joint capsule. The proposed gel, poly(ethylene glycol)/chitosan/sodium glycerophosphate (PEG/CS/GP) composite gel was then tested. The tribology results showed that the PEG/CS/GP gel had excellent slow-release properties, especially under pressure, and the PEG played an important role in improving the gel's rheological and mechanical properties. Moreover, this study revealed that the release solution had a good lubrication effect because the PEG and GP could crosslink via the hydrogen bond effect.

Se-C Cleavage of Hexane Selenol at Steps on Au(111)

Selenols are considered as an alternative to thiols in self-assembled monolayers, but the Se-C bond is one limiting factor for their usefulness. In this study, we address the stability of the Se-C bond by a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of gas-phase-deposited hexane selenol (CH₃(CH₂)₅SeH) on Au(111) using photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and density functional theory (DFT). Experimentally, we find that initial adsorption leaves atomic Se on the surface without any carbon left on the surface, whereas further adsorption generates a saturated selenolate layer. The Se 3d component from atomic Se appears at 0.85 eV lower binding energy than the selenolate-related component. DFT calculations show that the most stable structure of selenols on Au(111) is in the form of RSe-Au-SeR complexes adsorbed on the unreconstructed Au(111) surface. This is similar to thiols on Au(111). Calculated Se 3d core-level shifts between elemental Se and selenolate in this structure nicely reproduce the experimentally recorded shifts. Dissociation of RSeH and subsequent formation of RH are found to proceed with high barriers on defect-free Au(111) terraces, with the highest barrier for scissoring R-Se. However, at steps, these barriers are considerably lower, allowing for Se-C bond breaking and hexane desorption, leaving elemental Se at the surface. Hexane is formed by replacing the Se-C bond with a H-C bond by using the hydrogen liberated from the selenol to selenolate transformation.

Design and Fabrication of Wettability Gradients with Tunable Profiles through Degrafting Organosilane Layers from Silica Surfaces by Tetrabutylammonium Fluoride

Surface-bound wettability gradients allow for a high-throughput approach to evaluate surface interactions for many biological and chemical processes. Here we describe the fabrication of surface wettability gradients on flat surfaces by a simple, two-step procedure that permits precise tuning of the gradient profile. This process involves the deposition of homogeneous silane SAMs followed by the formation of a surface coverage gradient through the selective removal of silanes from the substrate. Removal of silanes from the surface is achieved by using tetrabutylammonium fluoride which selectively cleaves the Si-O bonds at the headgroup of the silane. The kinetics of degrafting has been modeled by using a series of first order rate equations, based on the number of attachment points broken to remove a silane from the surface. Degrafting of monofunctional silanes exhibits a single exponential decay in surface coverage; however, there is a delay in degrafting of trifunctional silanes due to the presence of multiple attachment points. The effects of degrafting temperature and time are examined in detail and demonstrate the ability to reliably and precisely control the gradient profile on the surface. We observe a relatively homogeneous coverage of silane (i.e., without the presence of islands or holes) throughout the degrafting process, providing a much more uniform surface when compared to additive approaches of gradient formation. Linear gradients were formed on the substrates to demonstrate the reproducibility and tuneability of this subtractive approach.

Properties of Self-Assembled Monolayers Revealed via Inverse Tensiometry

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) have emerged as a simple platform technology and hence have been broadly studied. With advances in state-of-the-art fabrication and characterization methods, new insights into SAM structure and related properties have been delineated, albeit with some discrepancies and/or incoherencies. Some discrepancies, especially between experimental and theoretical work, are in part due to the misunderstanding of subtle structural features such as phase evolution and SAM quality. Recent work has, however, shown that simple techniques, such as the measurement of static contact angles, can be used to delineate otherwise complex properties of the SAM, especially when complemented by other more advanced techniques. In this article, we highlight the effect of nanoscale substrate asperities and molecular chain length on the SAM structure and associated properties. First, surfaces with tunable roughness are prepared on both Au and Ag, and their corresponding n-alkanethiolate SAMs are characterized through wetting and spectroscopy. From these data, chain-length- and substrate-morphology-dependent limits to the odd-even effect (structure and properties vary with the number of carbons in the molecules and the nature of the substrate), parametrization of gauche defect densities, and structural phase evolution (liquidlike, waxy, crystalline interfaces) are deduced. An evaluation of the correlation between the effect of roughness and the components of surface tension (polar-γ^p and dispersive-γ^d) reveals that wetting, at nanoscale rough surfaces, evolves proportionally with the ratio of the two components of surface tension. The evolution of conformational order is captured over a range of molecular lengths and parametrized through a dimensionless number, χ_c. By deploying a well-known tensiometry technique (herein the liquid is used to characterize the solid, hence the term inverse tensiometry) to characterize SAMs, we demonstrate that complex molecular-level phenomena in SAMs can be understood through simplicity.

Organs-on-Chips with combined multi-electrode array and transepithelial electrical resistance measurement capabilities

Here we demonstrate that microfluidic cell culture devices, known as Organs-on-a-Chips can be fabricated with multifunctional, real-time, sensing capabilities by integrating both multi-electrode arrays (MEAs) and electrodes for transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) measurements into the chips during their fabrication. To prove proof-of-concept, simultaneous measurements of cellular electrical activity and tissue barrier function were carried out in a dual channel, endothelialized, heart-on-a-chip device containing human cardiomyocytes and a channel-separating porous membrane covered with a primary human endothelial cell monolayer. These studies confirmed that the TEER-MEA chip can be used to simultaneously detect dynamic alterations of vascular permeability and cardiac function in the same chip when challenged with the inflammatory stimulus tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) or the cardiac targeting drug isoproterenol. Thus, this Organ Chip with integrated sensing capability may prove useful for real-time assessment of biological functions, as well as response to therapeutics.

Evaluating polymeric biomaterial-environment interfaces by Langmuir monolayer techniques

Polymeric biomaterials are of specific relevance in medical and pharmaceutical applications due to their wide range of tailorable properties and functionalities. The knowledge about interactions of biomaterials with their biological environment is of crucial importance for developing highly sophisticated medical devices. To achieve optimal in vivo performance, a description at the molecular level is required to gain better understanding about the surface of synthetic materials for tailoring their properties. This is still challenging and requires the comprehensive characterization of morphological structures, polymer chain arrangements and degradation behaviour. The review discusses selected aspects for evaluating polymeric biomaterial-environment interfaces by Langmuir monolayer methods as powerful techniques for studying interfacial properties, such as morphological and degradation processes. The combination of spectroscopic, microscopic and scattering methods with the Langmuir techniques adapted to polymers can substantially improve the understanding of their in vivo behaviour.

Laser textured Co-Cr-Mo alloy stored chitosan/poly(ethylene glycol) composite applied on artificial joints lubrication

Arthroplasty brings the wear problems because of body fluid has poor performance as lubricant. Lubricant which is used in artificial joints will rapidly degrade and be absorbed by human body after injecting. To prolong the lubricant's effectiveness, this study prepared chitosan/poly(ethylene glycol) (CS/PEG) and textures to play a role in joint lubrication and wear protection. Chitosan (CS) and poly(ethylene glycol) which have biocompatibility and biodegradability properties can be used in human body. The tribological results shown that CS/PEG sol has excellent performance when this sol was composed by 2wt% CS and 30wt% PEG, the average friction coefficient below 0.016 under the condition of 30-90N load (pressure 4.2-12.6MPa). In this study, CS/PEG was added in the texture of artificial joints, then the surfaces of the CS/PEG formed gel via NaOH solidification effect. The CS/PEG gel film could prevent the CS/PEG sol from diluting in body fluid. Meanwhile, FT-IR, XRD, UV/vis and Raman spectra revealed that CS associated with PEG via hydrogen bond effect may form a particular structure, which leaded the good tribological performance. This study provides a new, simple and green approach to enhance tribological performances of artificial joints.
