scRNA-seq data from the larval Drosophila ventral cord provides a resource for studying motor systems function and development

The Drosophila larval ventral nerve cord (VNC) shares many similarities with the spinal cord of vertebrates and has emerged as a major model for understanding the development and function of motor systems. Here, we use high-quality scRNA-seq, validated by anatomical identification, to create a comprehensive census of larval VNC cell types. We show that the neural lineages that comprise the adult VNC are already defined, but quiescent, at the larval stage. Using fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS)-enriched populations, we separate all motor neuron bundles and link individual neuron clusters to morphologically characterized known subtypes. We discovered a glutamate receptor subunit required for basal neurotransmission and homeostasis at the larval neuromuscular junction. We describe larval glia and endorse the general view that glia perform consistent activities throughout development. This census represents an extensive resource and a powerful platform for future discoveries of cellular and molecular mechanisms in repair, regeneration, plasticity, homeostasis, and behavioral coordination.

Programming Anisotropic Functionality of 3D Microdenticles by Staggered-Overlapped and Multilayered Microarchitectures

Natural sharkskin features staggered-overlapped and multilayered architectures of riblet-textured anisotropic microdenticles, exhibiting drag reduction and providing a flexible yet strong armor. However, the artificial fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) sharkskin with these unique functionalities and mechanical integrity is a challenge using conventional techniques. In this study, it is reported on the facile microfabrication of multilayered 3D sharkskin through the magnetic actuation of polymeric composites and subsequent chemical shape fixation by casting thin polymeric films. The fabricated hydrophobic sharkskin, with geometric symmetry breaking, achieves anisotropic drag reduction in frontal and backward flow directions against the riblet-textured microdenticles. For mechanical integrity, hard-on-soft multilayered mechanical properties are realized by coating the polymeric sharkskin with thin layers of zinc oxide and platinum, which have higher hardness and recovery behaviors than the polymer. This multilayered hard-on-soft sharkskin exhibits friction anisotropy, mechanical robustness, and structural recovery. Furthermore, coating the MXene nanosheets provides the fabricated sharkskin with a low electrical resistance of ≈5.3 Ω, which leads to high Joule heating (≈229.9 °C at 2.75 V). The proposed magnetomechanical actuation-assisted microfabrication strategy is expected to facilitate the development of devices requiring multifunctional microtextures.

Impermeable Graphene Skin Increases the Heating Efficiency and Stability of an MXene Heating Element

A Joule heater made of emerging 2D nanosheets, i.e., MXene, has the advantage of low-voltage operation with stable heat generation owing to its highly conductive and uniformly layered structure. However, the self-heated MXene sheets easily get oxidized in warm and moist environments, which limits their intrinsic heating efficiencies. Herein, an ultrathin graphene skin is introduced as a surface-regulative coating on MXene to enhance its oxidative stability and Joule heating efficiency. The skin layer is deposited on MXene using a scalable solution-phased layer-by-layer assembly process without deteriorating the excellent electrical conductivity of the MXene. The graphene skin comprises narrow and hydrophobic channels, which results in ≈70 times higher water impermeability of the hybrid film of graphene and MXene (GMX) than that of the pristine MXene. A complementary electrochemical analysis confirms that the graphene skin facilitates longer-lasting protection than conventional polymer coatings owing to its tortuous pathways. In addition, the sp2 planar carbon surface with a low heat loss coefficient improves the heating efficiency of the GMX, indicating that this strategy is promising for developing adaptive heating materials with a tractable voltage range and high Joule heating efficiency.

Surface nitrided MXene sheets with outstanding electroconductivity and oxidation stability

Two-dimensional Ti3C2Tx MXenes are promising candidates for a wide range of film- or fiber-based devices owing to their solution processability, high electrical conductivity, and versatile surface chemistry. The surface terminal groups (Tx) of MXenes can be removed to increase their inherent electrical performance and ensure chemical stability. Therefore, understanding the chemical evolution during the removal of the terminal groups is crucial for guiding the production, processing, and application of MXenes. Herein, we investigate the effect of chemical modification on the electron-transfer behavior during the removal of the terminal groups by annealing Ti3C2Tx MXene single sheets under argon (Ar-MXene) and ammonia gas (NH3-MXene) conditions. Annealing in ammonia gas results in surface nitridation of MXenes and preserves the electron-abundant Ti3C2 structure, whereas annealing MXene single sheets in Ar gas results in the oxidation of the titanium layers. The surface-nitrided MXene film exhibits an electrical conductivity two times higher than that of the Ar-MXene film. The oxidation stability is quantified by calculating the oxidation rate constants for severe reactions with H2O2. The surface-nitrided MXene is 13 times more stable than Ar-MXene. The investigation of MXene single sheets provides fundamental insights that are valuable for designing electrically conductive and chemically stable MXenes.

Grafting Behavior of Amine Ligands for Surface Modification of MXene

Surface modification to improve the oxidation stability and dispersibility of MXene in diverse organic media is a facile strategy for broadening its application. Among the various ligands that can be grafted on the MXene surface, oleylamine (OAm), with amine functionalities, is an advantageous candidate owing to its strong interactions and commercial viability. OAms are grafted onto MXene through covalent bonds induced by nucleophilic reactions and H bonds in liquid interface reactions at room temperature. In addition, this grafting behavior of the ligand was characterized by a reduction in the slope with an increase in the ligand concentration (C_l), confirming that the OAms were grafted via Langmuir-like behavior, and the monolayer of OAms was developed via two distinct steps (I: lying-down phase; II: ordered monolayer). MXene nanosheets modified by OAm (OAm-MX) are highly dispersible in a wide range of organic solvents owing to the alkyl chain of the OAms, which induces hydrophobic properties on the surface of MXene. The OAm-MX dispersion exhibits outstanding oxidation and dispersion stability and remarkable coating performance on a wide range of substrates owing to their excellent solution processability. Therefore, this study provides fundamental insights into the adsorption behavior and interaction between amine ligands and MXene nanosheets for the surface chemistry of MXene.

Sub-Second Joule-Heated RuO2-Decorated Nitrogen- and Sulfur-Doped Graphene Fibers for Flexible Fiber-type Supercapacitors

Graphene-based fiber-shaped supercapacitors (FSSCs) have received considerable attention as potential wearable energy storage devices owing to their simple operating mechanism, flexibility, and long-term stability. To date, energy storage capacities of supercapacitors have been significantly improved via strategies such as heteroatom doping and the incorporation of pseudocapacitive metal oxides. Herein, we develop a novel and scalable direct-hybridization method that combines heteroatom doping and metal oxide hybridization for the fabrication of high-performance FSSCs. Using porous and highly conductive nitrogen and sulfur co-doped graphene fibers (NS-GFs) as self-heating units, we successfully convert ruthenium hydroxide anchored to the surface into ruthenium oxide nanoparticles after programmed sub-second electrothermal annealing without structural damage of the fibers. The resulting fibers show an increased gravimetric capacitance of 68.88 F g^-1 compared to that of the pristine NS-GF (8.32 F g^-1), excellent cyclic stability maintaining 96.67% of the initial capacitance after 20 000 continuous charging/discharging cycles, and good mechanical flexibility. The findings of this work advocate a successful Joule heating strategy for preparing high-performance graphene-based metal oxide hybrid FSSCs for use in energy storage applications.

[Immediate postoperative color Doppler ultrasonography on the diagnosis of hemorrhagic complications of liver biopsy and its directed compression hemostasis]

Objective: To study the diagnostic value of immediate color Doppler ultrasonography on traumatic hepatic hemorrhage after tissue sampling with ultrasound-guided liver biopsy and the clinical effect of its-directed local compression hemostasis at puncture-site. Methods: 132 hospitalized patients with various liver diseases underwent ultrasound-guided hepatic puncture-biopsies, including 61 cases with diffuse parenchymal and 71 cases with focal liver lesions. Immediate postoperative color Doppler ultrasonography was performed following liver biopsy. Abnormal blood flow signal was observed at hepatic puncture biopsy site, and if there were hemorrhagic signals, ultrasound-directed local compression hemostasis was performed until the bleeding signal disappeared. F-test and Chi-square test were used for statistical analysis. Results: Immediate color Doppler ultrasonography showed traumatic hemorrhage in 36.1% (22/61) and 40.8% (29/71) cases of diffuse liver disease and focal liver disease group, respectively. All hemorrhagic signals were eventually disappeared after ultrasound-directed local compression hemostasis. The median hemostasis time was 2 min in both groups, and there was no statistically significant difference in bleeding rate and hemostasis time between the two groups (P>0.05). There were no serious complications and deaths. Conclusion: Traumatic hepatic hemorrhage along the needle puncture tract is a common accompanying condition during liver biopsy. Immediate postoperative color Doppler ultrasonography can trace bleeding signals in timely manner and direct effective compression hemostasis, so it should be used routinely to help avoid occurrence of severe hemorrhagic complications.

Microglial activation induced by LPS mediates excitation of neurons in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus projecting to the rostral ventrolateral medulla

Microglia are known to be activated in the hypothalamic para-ventricular nucleus (PVN) of rats with cardiovascular diseases. However, the exact role of microglial activation in the plasticity of presympathetic PVN neurons associated with the modulation of sympathetic outflow remains poorly investigated. In this study, we analyzed the direct link between microglial activation and spontaneous firing rate along with the underlying synaptic mechanisms in PVN neurons projecting to the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM). Systemic injection of LPS induced microglial activation in the PVN, increased the frequency of spontaneous firing activity of PVN-RVLM neurons, reduced GABAergic inputs into these neurons, and increased plasma NE levels and heart rate. Systemic minocycline injection blocked all the observed LPS-induced effects. Our results indicate that LPS increases the firing rate and decreases GABAergic transmission in PVN-RVLM neurons associated with sympathetic outflow and the alteration is largely attributed to the activation of microglia. Our findings provide some insights into the role of microglial activation in regulating the activity of PVN-RVLM neurons associated with modulation of sympathetic outflow in cardiovascular diseases.

Microstructure-Controlled Polyacrylonitrile/Graphene Fibers over 1 Gigapascal Strength

Controlling the microstructures in fibers, such as crystalline structures and microvoids, is a crucial challenge for the development of mechanically strong graphene fibers (GFs). To date, although GFs graphitized at high temperatures have exhibited high tensile strength, GFs still have limited the ultimate mechanical strength owing to the presence due to the structural defects, including the imperfect alignment of graphitic crystallites and the presence of microsized voids. In this study, we significantly enhanced the mechanical strength of GF by controlling microstructures of fibers. GF was hybridized by incorporating polyacrylonitrile (PAN) in the graphene oxide (GO) dope solution. In addition, we controlled the orientation of the inner structure by applying a tensile force at 800 °C. The results suggest that PAN can act as a binder for graphene sheets and can facilitate the rearrangement of the fiber's microstructure. PAN was directionally carbonized between graphene sheets due to the catalytic effect of graphene. The resulting hybrid GFs successfully displayed a high strength of 1.10 GPa without undergoing graphitization at extremely high temperatures. We believe that controlling the alignment of nanoassembled structure is an efficient strategy for achieving the inherent performance characteristics of graphene at the level of multidimensional structures including films and fibers.

Sub-nanometer confinement enables facile condensation of gas electrolyte for low-temperature batteries

Confining molecules in the nanoscale environment can lead to dramatic changes of their physical and chemical properties, which opens possibilities for new applications. There is a growing interest in liquefied gas electrolytes for electrochemical devices operating at low temperatures due to their low melting point. However, their high vapor pressure still poses potential safety concerns for practical usages. Herein, we report facile capillary condensation of gas electrolyte by strong confinement in sub-nanometer pores of metal-organic framework (MOF). By designing MOF-polymer membranes (MPMs) that present dense and continuous micropore (~0.8 nm) networks, we show significant uptake of hydrofluorocarbon molecules in MOF pores at pressure lower than the bulk counterpart. This unique property enables lithium/fluorinated graphite batteries with MPM-based electrolytes to deliver a significantly higher capacity than those with commercial separator membranes (~500 mAh g-1 vs. <0.03 mAh g-1) at -40 °C under reduced pressure of the electrolyte.

Neto-α Controls Synapse Organization and Homeostasis at the Drosophila Neuromuscular Junction

Glutamate receptor auxiliary proteins control receptor distribution and function, ultimately controlling synapse assembly, maturation, and plasticity. At the Drosophila neuromuscular junction (NMJ), a synapse with both pre- and postsynaptic kainate-type glutamate receptors (KARs), we show that the auxiliary protein Neto evolved functionally distinct isoforms to modulate synapse development and homeostasis. Using genetics, cell biology, and electrophysiology, we demonstrate that Neto-α functions on both sides of the NMJ. In muscle, Neto-α limits the size of the postsynaptic receptor field. In motor neurons (MNs), Neto-α controls neurotransmitter release in a KAR-dependent manner. In addition, Neto-α is both required and sufficient for the presynaptic increase in neurotransmitter release in response to reduced postsynaptic sensitivity. This KAR-independent function of Neto-α is involved in activity-induced cytomatrix remodeling. We propose that Drosophila ensures NMJ functionality by acquiring two Neto isoforms with differential expression patterns and activities.

Dexamethasone reduces infectious bursal disease mortality in chickens

Very virulent infectious bursal disease virus (vvIBDV) causes high mortality in chickens but measures to reduce the mortality have not been explored. Chickens (8–9 weeks) were treated with 3 agents before and during vvIBDV inoculation. Dexamethasone treatment reduced the mortality of infected chickens (40.7% vs. 3.7%; p < 0.001), but treatment with aspirin or vitamin E plus selenium did not affect the mortality. The bursa of Fabricius appeared to have shrunk in both dead and surviving chickens (p < 0.01). The results indicate that dexamethasone can reduce mortality in vvIBDV-infected chickens and may provide therapeutic clues for saving individual birds infected by the virus.

Highly Electroconductive and Mechanically Strong Ti3C2Tx MXene Fibers Using a Deformable MXene Gel

Self-assembly of two-dimensional MXene sheets is used in various fields to create multiscale structures due to their electrical, mechanical, and chemical properties. In principle, MXene nanosheets are assembled by molecular interactions, including hydrogen bonds, electrostatic interactions, and van der Waals forces. This study describes how MXene colloid nanosheets can form self-supporting MXene hydrogels. Three-dimensional network structures of MXene gels are strengthened by reinforced electrostatic interactions between nanosheets. Stable gel networks are beneficial for fabricating highly aligned fibers because MXene gel can endure structural deformation. During wet spinning of highly concentrated MXene colloids in a coagulation bath, MXene sheets can be transformed into perfectly aligned fibers under a mechanical drawing force. Oriented MXene fibers exhibit a 1.5-fold increase in electrical conductivity (12 504 S cm^-1) and Young's modulus (122 GPa) compared with other fibers. The oriented MXene fibers are expected to have widespread applications, including electrical wiring and signal transmission.

Carbon nanotube-reduced graphene oxide fiber with high torsional strength from rheological hierarchy control

High torsional strength fibers are of practical interest for applications such as artificial muscles, electric generators, and actuators. Herein, we maximize torsional strength by understanding, measuring, and overcoming rheological thresholds of nanocarbon (nanotube/graphene oxide) dopes. The formed fibers show enhanced structure across multiple length scales, modified hierarchy, and improved mechanical properties. In particular, the torsional properties were examined, with high shear strength (914 MPa) attributed to nanotubes but magnified by their structure, intercalating graphene sheets. This design approach has the potential to realize the hierarchical dimensional hybrids, and may also be useful to build the effective network structure of heterogeneous materials.

Selective Disruption of Synaptic BMP Signaling by a Smad Mutation Adjacent to the Highly Conserved H2 Helix

Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) shape normal development and function via canonical and noncanonical signaling pathways. BMPs initiate canonical signaling by binding to transmembrane receptors that phosphorylate Smad proteins and induce their translocation into the nucleus and regulation of target genes. Phosphorylated Smads also accumulate at cellular junctions, but this noncanonical, local BMP signaling modality remains less defined. We have recently reported that phosphorylated Smad (pMad in Drosophila) accumulates at synaptic junctions in protein complexes with genetically distinct composition and regulation. Here, we examined a wide collection of DrosophilaMad alleles and searched for molecular features relevant to pMad accumulation at synaptic junctions. We found that strong Mad alleles generally disrupt both synaptic and nuclear pMad, whereas moderate Mad alleles have a wider range of phenotypes and can selectively impact different BMP signaling pathways. Interestingly, regulatory Mad mutations reveal that synaptic pMad appears to be more sensitive to a net reduction in Mad levels than nuclear pMad. Importantly, a previously uncharacterized allele, Mad8 , showed markedly reduced synaptic pMad but only moderately diminished nuclear pMad. The postsynaptic composition and electrophysiological properties of Mad8 neuromuscular junctions (NMJs) were also altered. Using biochemical approaches, we examined how a single point mutation in Mad8 could influence the Mad-receptor interface and identified a key motif, the H2 helix. Our study highlights the biological relevance of Smad-dependent, synaptic BMP signaling and uncovers a highly conserved structural feature of Smads, critical for normal development and function.

Rheological Investigation of Relaxation Behavior of Polycarbonate/Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene Blends

The rheological properties of polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (PC/ABS) blends with various blend ratios are investigated at different temperatures to determine the shear dependent chain motions in a heterogeneous blend system. At low frequency levels under 0.1 rad/s, the viscosity of the material with a blend ratio of 3:7 (PC:ABS) is higher than that of pure ABS polymer. As the temperature increases, the viscosities of ABS-rich blends increase rather than decrease, whereas PC-rich blends exhibit decrease in viscosity. Results from the time sweep measurements indicate that ordered structures of PC and the formation and breakdown of internal network structures of ABS polymer occur simultaneously in the blend systems. Newly designed sequence test results show that the internal structures formed between PC and ABS polymers are dominant at low shear conditions for the blend ratio of 3:7 and effects of structural change and the presence of polybutadiene (PBD) become dominant at high shear conditions for pure ABS. The results of yield stress and relaxation time for PC/ABS blends support this phenomenon. The specimen with a blend ratio of 3:7 exhibited the highest value of yield stress at high temperature among others, which implies that the internal structure become stronger at higher temperature. The heterogeneity of ABS-rich blends increases whereas that of PC-rich blends decreases as temperature increases.

Super-Expansion of Assembled Reduced Graphene Oxide Interlayers by Segregation of Al Nanoparticle Pillars for High-Capacity Na-Ion Battery Anodes

The applicability of Na-ion batteries is contingent on breakthroughs in alternative electrode materials that have high capacities and which are economically viable. Unfortunately, conventional graphite anodes for Li-ion battery systems do not allow Na-ion accommodation into their interlayer space owing to the large ionic radius and low stabilizing energy of Na in graphite. Here, we suggest a promising strategy for significantly increasing Na capacity by expanding the axial slab space of graphite. We successfully synthesized reconstructed graphite materials via self-assembly of negative graphite oxide (GO) flakes and Al cation (positive) pillars and by subsequent chemical reaction of the obtained Al-GO materials. Al pillars, atomically distributed in graphite interlayers, can extend the slab space by up to ∼7 Å, which is a 2-fold interlayer distance of pristine graphite. An exceptionally high capacity of 780 mAh/g is demonstrated for reconstructed graphite anodes with Al pillars, compared with rGO materials (210 mAh/g). We investigated the electrochemical reaction mechanism and structural changes associated with discharge and charge to emphasize the benefit of using reconstructed graphite as anodes in Na-ion batteries. Our strategy of modifying the interlayer distance by introducing metallic pillars between the layers can help address the low capacity of carbonaceous anodes.

PLGA Microspheres with Alginate-Coated Large Pores for the Formulation of an Injectable Depot of Donepezil Hydrochloride

As the main symptom of Alzheimer's disease-related dementia is memory loss, patient compliance for donepezil hydrochloride (donepezil), administered as once-daily oral formulations, is poor. Thus, we aimed to design poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres (MS) with alginate-coated large pores as an injectable depot of donepezil exhibiting sustained release over 2-3 weeks. The PLGA MS with large pores could provide large space for loading drugs with high loading capacity, and thereby sufficient amounts of drugs were considered to be delivered with minimal use of PLGA MS being injected. However, initial burst release of donepezil from the porous PLGA MS was observed. To reduce this initial burst release, the surface pores were closed with calcium alginate coating using a spray-ionotropic gelation method. The final pore-closed PLGA MS showed in vitro sustained release for approximately 3 weeks, and the initial burst release was remarkably decreased by the calcium alginate coating. In the prediction of plasma drug concentration profiles using convolution method, the mean residence time of the pore-closed PLGA MS was 2.7-fold longer than that of the porous PLGA MS. Therefore, our results reveal that our pore-closed PLGA MS formulation is a promising candidate for the treatment of dementia with high patient compliance.

Graphene Foam Cantilever Produced via Simultaneous Foaming and Doping Effect of an Organic Coagulant

Inspired by the role of cellular structures, which give three-dimensional robustness to graphene structures, a new type of graphene cantilever with mechanical resilience is introduced. Here, NH₄SCN is incorporated into graphene oxide (GO) gel using it as a coagulant for GO fiber self-assembly, a foaming agent, and a dopant. Subsequent thermal treatment of the GO fiber at 600 °C results in the evolution of gaseous species from NH₄SCN, yielding internally porous graphene cantilevers (NS-GF cantilevers). The results reveal that NS-GF cantilevers are doped with N and S and thus exhibit higher electrical conductivity (150 S cm^-1) than that of their nonporous counterparts (38.4 S cm^-1). Unlike conventional fibers, the NS-GF cantilevers exhibit mechanical resilience by bending under applied mechanical force but reverting to the original position upon release. The tip of the NS-GF cantilevers is coated with magnetic Fe₃O₄ particles, and fast mechanical movement is achieved by applying the magnetic field. Since the NS-GF cantilevers are highly conductive and elastic, they are employed as bendable, magnetodriven electrical switches that could precisely read on/off signals for >10 000 cycles. Our approach suggests a robust fabrication strategy to prepare highly electroconductive and mechanically elastic foam structures by introducing unique organic foaming agents.

Room-Temperature, Highly Durable Ti3C2Tx MXene/Graphene Hybrid Fibers for NH3 Gas Sensing

Graphene-based fibers (GFs) have aroused enormous interest in portable, wearable electronics because of their excellent mechanical flexibility, electrical conductivity, and weavability, which make them advantageous for wearable electronic devices. Herein, we report the development of metal binder-free Ti₃C₂T_x MXene/graphene hybrid fibers by a scalable wet-spinning process. These hybrid fibers exhibit excellent mechanical and electrical properties for applications in flexible wearable gas sensors. The synergistic effects of electronic properties and gas-adsorption capabilities of MXene/graphene allow the created fibers to show high NH₃ gas sensitivity at room temperature. The hybrid fibers exhibited significantly improved NH₃ sensing response (ΔR/R₀ = 6.77%) compared with individual MXene and graphene. The hybrid fibers also showed excellent mechanical flexibility with a minimal fluctuation of resistance of ±0.2% and low noise resistance even after bending over 2000 cycles, enabling gas sensing during deformation. Furthermore, flexible MXene/graphene hybrid fibers were woven into a lab coat, demonstrating their high potential for wearable devices. We envisage that these exciting features of 2D hybrid materials will provide a novel pathway for designing next-generation portable wearable gas sensors.

Effects of dietary vitamin levels on physiological responses, blood profiles, and reproductive performance in gestating sows

This study was performed to evaluate the effects of dietary vitamin levels on physiological responses, blood profiles, and reproductive performance in gestating sows. A total of 52 F1 multiparous sows (Yorkshire × Landrace) with an average body weight of 223.5 ± 31.7 kg, an average parity of 6.4 ± 2.7, and an average backfat thickness of 18.5 ± 4.9 mm were divided into four treatment groups considering body weight, backfat thickness, and parity in a completely randomized design with 13 replicates. The treatments were 100% (V1), 300% (V3), 600% (V6) and 900% (V9) of the National Research Council (NRC) Nutrient Requirements of Swine. The gestation diet was formulated based on corn-soybean meal (SBM) and contained 3,265 kcal of metabolizable energy (ME)/kg and 12.00% crude protein. During the lactation period, all sows were fed the same commercial lactation diet. There was no significant difference in body weight of gestating sows. However backfat thickness tended to increase when higher levels of vitamins were provided to gestating sows (p < 0.10). When high levels of dietary vitamins were provided, the body weight change of lactating sows increased (p < 0.01). When sows were fed higher levels of vitamins, the feed intake of lactating sows tended to decrease (p = 0.06). There were no treatment differences in the number of total born, born alive, stillbirth piglets, or the body weight of piglets according to different dietary vitamin level. As dietary vitamin level increased, the serum concentration of 25(OH)D₃ in sows at 90 days of gestation linearly increased (p < 0.01). Furthermore, the serum vitamin E level of gestating sows was linearly increased with increasing dietary vitamin level (p < 0.05). The current NRC vitamin requirements are sufficient for gestating sows and higher levels of vitamins in the gestation diet did not show any beneficial effects for gestating and lactating sows.

Stiffening of graphene oxide films by soft porous sheets

Graphene oxide (GO) sheets have been used as a model system to study how the mechanical properties of two-dimensional building blocks scale to their bulk form, such as paper-like, lamellar-structured thin films. Here, we report that the modulus of multilayer GO films can be significantly enhanced if some of the sheets are drastically weakened by introducing in-plane porosity. Nanometer-sized pores are introduced in GO sheets by chemical etching. Membrane-deflection measurements at the single-layer level show that the sheets are drastically weakened as the in-plane porosity increases. However, the mechanical properties of the corresponding multilayer films are much less sensitive to porosity. Surprisingly, the co-assembly of pristine and etched GO sheets yields even stiffer films than those made from pristine sheets alone. This is attributed to the more compliant nature of the soft porous sheets, which act as a binder to improve interlayer packing and load transfer in the multilayer films.

Tailored nanoplateau and nanochannel structures using solution-processed rutile TiO2 thin films for complementary and bipolar switching characteristics

We synthesized two different nanostructures of rutile TiO₂ (r-TiO₂) thin films on a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate at the lowest temperature reported until now and fabricated resistive random access memory (RRAM) devices with these r-TiO₂ thin films having the stacking sequence of Ag/r-TiO₂/FTO. Complementary resistive switching (CRS) and bipolar resistive switching (BRS) were observed in different thicknesses of r-TiO₂ based devices. Benefiting from the in situ growth of the solution processed thin films and modulating the reaction growth rates, we successfully attained two different morphologies of r-TiO₂ with a nanoplateau at a controlled deposition rate and pre-defined nanochannels at a higher deposition rate. The RRAM devices with nano-plateaus of r-TiO₂ showed excellent CRS as well as unprecedented simultaneous observations of BRS. These CRS and BRS characteristics were reversible and reproducible. On the other hand, the tailored pre-defined nanochannels in r-TiO₂ led to forming-free BRS with a pulse endurance higher than 10⁷ without any degradation in the high and low resistance states. We propose a plausible switching mechanism of these unprecedented events using various physical and electrical characterization studies of low-temperature processed r-TiO₂ RRAM devices. This work suggests the importance of solution-processed thin film engineering for RRAM switching with reliable and reproducible characteristics.

Effects of dietary energy and crude protein levels on growth performance, blood profiles, and carcass traits in growing-finishing pigs

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary energy and crude protein (CP) levels on growth performance, blood profiles, and carcass traits in growing-finishing pigs. A total of 180 crossbred pigs ([Yorkshire × Landrace] × Duroc) with an average body weight of 30.96 ± 3.068 kg were used for a 12-week feeding trial. Experimental pigs were allotted to a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement using a randomized complete block (RCB) design. The first factor was two levels of dietary metabolizable energy (ME) density (13.40 MJ/kg or 13.82 MJ/kg), and the second factor was three dietary CP levels based on subdivision of growing-finishing phases (high: 18%/16.3%/16.3%/13.2% middle: 17%/15.3%/15.3%/12.2% and low: 16%/14.3%/14.3%/11.2%). Average daily gain (ADG) and gain-feed ratio (G:F ratio) decreased as dietary CP level was decreased linearly (linear, p < 0.05; p < 0.05, respectively) in the early growing period, and G:F ration also decreased as dietary CP level was decreased linearly (linearly, p < 0.05) over the whole growing phase. Over the entire experimental period, G:F ratio decreased as dietary ME level decreased (p = 0.01). Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentration was increased as dietary energy level decreased in growing period (p < 0.01). During finishing period, total protein concentration was decreased by lower dietary energy level (p < 0.05). In this study, there were no significant differences in proximate factors, physiochemical properties, muscle TBARS assay results, pH changes, or color of pork by dietary treatments. However, saturated fatty acid (SFA) increased (p < 0.01) and polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) decreased (p < 0.05) when ME was decreased by 0.42 MJ/kg in growing-finishing pig diets. In addition, monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) tended to increase when CP level was decreased in growing-finishing pig diets (p = 0.06). A growing-finishing diet of 13.82 MJ/kg diet of ME with the high CP level can improve growth performance and show better fatty acids composition of pork.

The effect of diverse metal oxides in graphene composites on the adsorption isotherm of gaseous benzene

The effective removal technique is necessary for the real world treatment of a hazardous pollutant (e.g., gaseous benzene). In an effort to develop such technique, the adsorption efficiency of benzene in a nitrogen stream (5 Pa (50 ppm) at 50 mL atm min^-1 flow rate and 298 K) was assessed against 10 different metal oxide/GO composite materials (i.e., 1: graphene oxide Co (GO-Co (OH)₂), 2: graphene oxide Cu (GO-Cu(OH)₂), 3: graphene oxide Mn (GO-MnO), 4: graphene oxide Ni (GO-Ni(OH)₂), 5: graphene oxide Sn (GO-SnO₂), 6: reduced graphene oxide Co (rGO-Co(OH)₂), 7: reduced graphene oxide Cu (rGO-Cu(OH)₂), 8: reduced graphene oxide Mn (rGO-MnO), 9: reduced graphene oxide Ni (rGO-Ni(OH)₂), and 10: reduced graphene oxide Sn (rGO-SnO₂)) in reference to their pristine forms of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The highest adsorption capacities (at 100% breakthrough) were observed as ~23 mg g^-1 for both GO-Ni(OH)₂ and rGO-SnO₂, followed by GO (~19.1 mg g^-1) and GO-Co(OH)₂ (~18.8 mg g^-1). Therefore, the GO-Ni(OH)₂ and rGO-SnO₂ composites exhibited considerably high capacities to treat streams containing >5 Pa of benzene. However, the lowest adsorption capacity was found for GO-MnO (0.05 mg g^-1). Alternately, if expressed in terms of the 10% breakthrough volume (BTV), the five aforementioned materials showed values of 0.50, 0.46, 0.40, 0.44, and 0.39 L g^-1, respectively. The experimental data of target sorbents were fitted to linearized Langmuir, Freundlich, Elovich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models. Accordingly, the non-linear Langmuir isotherm model revealed the presence of two or more distinct sorption profiles for several of the tested sorbents. Most of the sorbents showed type-III isotherm profiles where the sorption capacity proportional to the loaded volume.

Porous Graphene-Carbon Nanotube Scaffolds for Fiber Supercapacitors

Fiber nanomaterials can become fundamental devices that can be woven into smart textiles, for example, miniaturized fiber-based supercapacitors (FSCs). They can be utilized for portable, wearable electronics and energy storage devices, which are highly prospective areas of research in the future. Herein, we developed porous carbon nanotube-graphene hybrid fibers (CNT-GFs) for all-solid-state symmetric FSCs, which were assembled through wet-spinning followed by a hydrothermal activation process using environmentally benign chemicals (i.e., H₂O₂ and NH₄OH in deionized water). The barriers that limited effective ion accessibility in GFs were overcome by the intercalation of CNTs in the GFs which enhanced their electrical conductivity and mechanical properties as well. The all-solid-state symmetric FSCs of a precisely controlled activated hybrid fiber (a-CNT-GF) electrode exhibited an enhanced volumetric capacitance of 60.75 F cm^-3 compared with those of a pristine CNT-GF electrode (19.80 F cm^-3). They also showed a volumetric energy density (4.83 mWh cm^-3) roughly 3 times higher than that of untreated CNT-GFs (1.50 mWh cm^-3). The excellent mechanical flexibility and structural stability of a miniaturized a-CNT-GF are highlighted by the demonstration of negligible differences in capacitance upon bending and twisting. The mechanism of developing porous, large-scale, low-cost electrodes using an environmentally benign activation method presented in this work provides a promising route for designing a new generation of wearable, portable miniaturized energy storage devices.

Tunable Electronic Properties of Nitrogen and Sulfur Doped Graphene: Density Functional Theory Approach

We calculated the band structures of a variety of N- and S-doped graphenes in order to understand the effects of the N and S dopants on the graphene electronic structure using density functional theory (DFT). Band-structure analysis revealed energy band upshifting above the Fermi level compared to pristine graphene following doping with three nitrogen atoms around a mono-vacancy defect, which corresponds to p-type nature. On the other hand, the energy bands were increasingly shifted downward below the Fermi level with increasing numbers of S atoms in N/S-co-doped graphene, which results in n-type behavior. Hence, modulating the structure of graphene through N- and S-doping schemes results in the switching of “p-type” to “n-type” behavior with increasing S concentration. Mulliken population analysis indicates that the N atom doped near a mono-vacancy is negatively charged due to its higher electronegativity compared to C, whereas the S atom doped near a mono-vacancy is positively charged due to its similar electronegativity to C and its additional valence electrons. As a result, doping with N and S significantly influences the unique electronic properties of graphene. Due to their tunable band-structure properties, the resulting N- and S-doped graphenes can be used in energy and electronic-device applications. In conclusion, we expect that doping with N and S will lead to new pathways for tailoring and enhancing the electronic properties of graphene at the atomic level.

Effects of dietary energy and crude protein levels on growth performance, blood profiles, and nutrient digestibility in weaning pigs

Objective

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of reducing dietary metabolic energy (ME) and crude protein (CP) levels on growth performance, blood profiles, and nutrient digestibility in weaning pigs.

Methods

A total of 240 crossbred pigs (Duroc×[Landrace×Yorkshire]) with an average body weight of 8.67±1.13 kg were used for a 6-week feeding trial. Experimental pigs were allotted to a 2×3 factorial arrangement using a randomized complete block design. The first factor was two levels of dietary ME density (low ME level, 13.40 MJ/kg or high ME level, 13.82 MJ/kg) and the second factor was three dietary CP levels based on subdivision of early and late weaning phases (low CP level, 19.7%/16.9%; middle CP level, 21.7%/18.9%; or high CP level, 23.7%/20.9%).

Results

Over the entire experimental period, there were no significant difference in body weight among groups, but a decrease in diet energy level was associated with an increase in average daily feed intake (p = 0.02) and decrease in gain-feed ratio (G:F) ratio (p<0.01). Decreased CP levels in the diet were associated with a linear increase in average daily gain (p< 0.05) and quadratic increase in G:F ratio (p<0.05). In the early weaning period, blood urea nitrogen concentration tended to increase when ME in the diet decreased and decrease when CP level in the diet decreased (p = 0.09, p<0.01, respectively). Total protein concentration tended to increase when CP level was reduced (p = 0.08). In the late weaning period, blood urea nitrogen concentration decreased linearly as CP level decreased (p<0.01). The CP and crude fat digestibility decreased when ME was decreased by 0.42 MJ/kg (p = 0.05, p = 0.01, respectively). The CP digestibility increased linearly as CP level decreased (p = 0.01).

Conclusion

A weaning pig diet containing high ME level (13.82 MJ/kg) and low CP level (19.7%/16.9%) can improve pig growth performance and nutrient digestibility.

Graphene oxide liquid crystals: a frontier 2D soft material for graphene-based functional materials

Graphene, despite being the best known strong and electrical/thermal conductive material, has found limited success in practical applications, mostly due to difficulties in the formation of desired large-scale highly organized structures. Our discovery of a liquid crystalline phase formation in graphene oxide dispersion has enabled a broad spectrum of highly aligned graphene-based structures, including films, fibers, membranes, and mesoscale structures. In this review, the current understanding of the structure-property relationship of graphene oxide liquid crystals (GOLCs) is overviewed. Various synthetic methods and parameters that can be optimized for GOLC phase formation are highlighted. Along with the results from different characterization methods for the identification of the GOLC phases, the typical characteristics of different types of GOLC phases introduced so far, including nematic, lamellar and chiral phases, are carefully discussed. Finally, various interesting applications of GOLCs are outlined together with the future prospects for their further developments.

Tenectin recruits integrin to stabilize bouton architecture and regulate vesicle release at the Drosophila neuromuscular junction

Assembly, maintenance and function of synaptic junctions depend on extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins and their receptors. Here we report that Tenectin (Tnc), a Mucin-type protein with RGD motifs, is an ECM component required for the structural and functional integrity of synaptic specializations at the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) in Drosophila. Using genetics, biochemistry, electrophysiology, histology and electron microscopy, we show that Tnc is secreted from motor neurons and striated muscles and accumulates in the synaptic cleft. Tnc selectively recruits αPS2/βPS integrin at synaptic terminals, but only the cis Tnc/integrin complexes appear to be biologically active. These complexes have distinct pre- and postsynaptic functions, mediated at least in part through the local engagement of the spectrin-based membrane skeleton: the presynaptic complexes control neurotransmitter release, while postsynaptic complexes ensure the size and architectural integrity of synaptic boutons. Our study reveals an unprecedented role for integrin in the synaptic recruitment of spectrin-based membrane skeleton.

Nerve cells or neurons can communicate with each other by releasing chemical messengers into the gap between them, the synapse. Both neurons and synapses are surrounded by a network of proteins called the extracellular matrix, which anchors, protects and supports the synapse. The matrix also helps to regulate the dynamic communication across the synapses and consequently neurons.

Little is known about the proteins of the extracellular matrix, in particular about the ones involved in structural support. This is especially important for the so-called neuromuscular junctions, where neurons stimulate muscle contraction and trigger vigorous movement. Receptor proteins on cell surfaces, such as integrins, can bind to the extracellular matrix proteins to anchor the cells and are important for all cell junctions, including synaptic junctions. But because of their many essential roles during development, it was unclear how integrins modulate the activity of the synapse.

To investigate this further, Wang et al. studied the neuromuscular junctions of fruit flies. The experiments revealed that both muscle and neurons secrete a large protein called Tenectin, which accumulates into the small space between the neuron and the muscle, the synaptic cleft. This protein can bind to integrin and is necessary to support the neuromuscular junction structurally and functionally.

Wang et al. discovered that Tenectin works by gathering integrins on the surface of the neuron and the muscle. In the neuron, Tenectin forms complexes with integrin to regulate the release of neurotransmitters. In the muscle, the complexes provide support to the synaptic structures. However, when Tenectin was experimentally removed, it only disrupted the integrins at the neuromuscular junction, without affecting integrins in other regions of the cells, such as the site where the muscle uses integrins to attach to the tendon. Moreover, without Tenectin an important intracellular scaffolding meshwork that lines up and reinforces cell membranes was no longer organized properly at the synapse.

A next step will be to identify the missing components between Tenectin/integrin complexes on the surface of neurons and the neurotransmitter release machinery inside the cells. The extracellular matrix and its receptors play fundamental roles in the development and function of the nervous system. A better knowledge of the underlying mechanisms will help us to better understand the complex interplay between the synapse and the extracellular matrix.

Influence of various levels of milk by-products in weaner diets on growth performance, blood urea nitrogen, diarrhea incidence, and pork quality of weaning to finishing pigs

OBJECTIVE

This study was conducted to evaluate various levels of milk by-product in weaning pig diet on growth performance, blood profiles, carcass characteristics and economic performance for weaning to finishing pigs.

METHODS

A total of 160 weaning pigs ([Yorkshire×Landrace]×Duroc), average 7.01±1.32 kg body weight (BW), were allotted to four treatments by BW and sex in 10 replications with 4 pigs per pen in a randomized complete block design. Pigs were fed each treatment diet with various levels of milk by-product (Phase 1: 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%, Phase 2: 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15%, respectively). During weaning period (0 to 5 week), weaning pigs were fed experimental diets and all pigs were fed the same commercial feed during growing-finishing period (6 to 14 week).

RESULTS

In the growth trial, BW, average daily gain (ADG), and average daily feed intake (ADFI) in the nursery period (5 weeks) increased as the milk by-product level in the diet increased (linear, p<0.05). Linear increases of pig BW with increasing the milk product levels were observed until late growing period (linear, p = 0.01). However, there were no significant differences in BW at the finishing periods, ADG, ADFI, and gain:feed ratio during the entire growing-finishing periods. The blood urea nitrogen concentration had no significant difference among dietary treatments. High inclusion level of milk by-product in weaner diet decreased crude protein (quadratic, p = 0.05) and crude ash (Linear, p = 0.05) of Longissimus muscle. In addition, cooking loss and water holding capacity increased with increasing milk product levels in the weaner diets (linear, p<0.01; p = 0.05). High milk by-product treatment had higher feed cost per weight gain compared to non-milk by-products treatment (linear, p = 0.01).

CONCLUSION

Supplementation of 10% to 5% milk by-products in weaning pig diet had results equivalent to the 30% to 15% milk treatment and 0% milk by-product supplementation in the diet had no negative influence on growth performance of finishing pigs.

High-Temperature Stable Anatase Titanium Oxide Nanofibers for Lithium-Ion Battery Anodes

Control of the crystal structure of electrochemically active materials is an important approach to fabricating high-performance electrodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Here, we report a methodology for controlling the crystal structure of TiO₂ nanofibers by adding aluminum isopropoxide to a common sol-gel precursor solution utilized to create TiO₂ nanofibers. The introduction of aluminum cations impedes the phase transformation of electrospun TiO₂ nanofibers from the anatase to the rutile phase, which inevitably occurs in the typical annealing process utilized for the formation of TiO₂ crystals. As a result, high-temperature stable anatase TiO₂ nanofibers were created in which the crystal structure was well-maintained even at high annealing temperatures of up to 700 °C. Finally, the resulting anatase TiO₂ nanofibers were utilized to prepare LIB anodes, and their electrochemical performance was compared to pristine TiO₂ nanofibers that contain both anatase and rutile phases. Compared to the electrode prepared with pristine TiO₂ nanofibers, the electrode prepared with anatase TiO₂ nanofibers exhibited excellent electrochemical performances such as an initial Coulombic efficiency of 83.9%, a capacity retention of 89.5% after 100 cycles, and a rate capability of 48.5% at a current density of 10 C (1 C = 200 mA g^-1).

Effects of wheat supplementation levels on growth performance, blood profiles, nutrient digestibility, and pork quality in growing-finishing pigs

OBJECTIVE

This study was conducted to evaluate various wheat supplementation levels on growth performance, blood profiles, nutrient digestibility, and pork quality in growing-finishing pigs.

METHODS

A total of 120 growing pigs ([Yorkshire×Landrace]×Duroc), with an average 27.75± 1.319 kg body weight, were used in growth trial. Pigs were allotted into each treatment by body weight and sex in 4 replicates with 6 pigs per pen in a randomized complete block design. Four-phase feeding programs were used in this experiment. The treatments included the following: i) corn-soybean meal (SBM) - based diet (CON), ii) corn-SBM - based diet+15% of wheat (W15), iii) corn-SBM - based diet+30% of wheat (W30), iv) corn-SBM - based diet+45% of wheat (W45), and 5) corn-SBM-based diet+60% of wheat (W60).

RESULTS

There was no significant difference in growth performance among the dietary treatments. However, the gain-to-feed (G:F) ratio tended to increase (quadratic, p<0.08) when the pigs were fed a higher wheat diet during the finishing period. The digestibility of crude ash and fat tended to decrease as the wheat supplementation level increased (p<0.08). The proximate analysis of the longissimus muscle was not affected by the dietary level of wheat. The crude ash content in pork was decreased linearly as the wheat supplementation level increased (p = 0.05). There was no significant difference in the pH level, shear force, water holding capacity, and cooking loss of the pork. In pork and fat, L*, a*, and b* values were not significantly different among dietary treatments.

CONCLUSION

Wheat can be supplemented up to 60% in a growing-finishing pig without detrimental effects on growth and pork quality. The G:F ratio tended to improve in the finishing period by wheat inclusion.

Structural basis of kainate subtype glutamate receptor desensitization

Glutamate receptors are ligand-gated tetrameric ion channels that mediate synaptic transmission in the central nervous system. They are instrumental in vertebrate cognition and their dysfunction underlies diverse diseases. In both the resting and desensitized states of AMPA and kainate receptor subtypes, the ion channels are closed, whereas the ligand-binding domains, which are physically coupled to the channels, adopt markedly different conformations. Without an atomic model for the desensitized state, it is not possible to address a central problem in receptor gating: how the resting and desensitized receptor states both display closed ion channels, although they have major differences in the quaternary structure of the ligand-binding domain. Here, by determining the structure of the kainate receptor GluK2 subtype in its desensitized state by cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) at 3.8 Å resolution, we show that desensitization is characterized by the establishment of a ring-like structure in the ligand-binding domain layer of the receptor. Formation of this 'desensitization ring' is mediated by staggered helix contacts between adjacent subunits, which leads to a pseudo-four-fold symmetric arrangement of the ligand-binding domains, illustrating subtle changes in symmetry that are important for the gating mechanism. Disruption of the desensitization ring is probably the key switch that enables restoration of the receptor to its resting state, thereby completing the gating cycle.

A Conserved Bicycle Model for Circadian Clock Control of Membrane Excitability

Circadian clocks regulate membrane excitability in master pacemaker neurons to control daily rhythms of sleep and wake. Here, we find that two distinctly timed electrical drives collaborate to impose rhythmicity on Drosophila clock neurons. In the morning, a voltage-independent sodium conductance via the NA/NALCN ion channel depolarizes these neurons. This current is driven by the rhythmic expression of NCA localization factor-1, linking the molecular clock to ion channel function. In the evening, basal potassium currents peak to silence clock neurons. Remarkably, daily antiphase cycles of sodium and potassium currents also drive mouse clock neuron rhythms. Thus, we reveal an evolutionarily ancient strategy for the neural mechanisms that govern daily sleep and wake.

A Novel, Noncanonical BMP Pathway Modulates Synapse Maturation at the Drosophila Neuromuscular Junction

At the Drosophila NMJ, BMP signaling is critical for synapse growth and homeostasis. Signaling by the BMP7 homolog, Gbb, in motor neurons triggers a canonical pathway—which modulates transcription of BMP target genes, and a noncanonical pathway—which connects local BMP/BMP receptor complexes with the cytoskeleton. Here we describe a novel noncanonical BMP pathway characterized by the accumulation of the pathway effector, the phosphorylated Smad (pMad), at synaptic sites. Using genetic epistasis, histology, super resolution microscopy, and electrophysiology approaches we demonstrate that this novel pathway is genetically distinguishable from all other known BMP signaling cascades. This novel pathway does not require Gbb, but depends on presynaptic BMP receptors and specific postsynaptic glutamate receptor subtypes, the type-A receptors. Synaptic pMad is coordinated to BMP’s role in the transcriptional control of target genes by shared pathway components, but it has no role in the regulation of NMJ growth. Instead, selective disruption of presynaptic pMad accumulation reduces the postsynaptic levels of type-A receptors, revealing a positive feedback loop which appears to function to stabilize active type-A receptors at synaptic sites. Thus, BMP pathway may monitor synapse activity then function to adjust synapse growth and maturation during development.

Synaptic activity and synapse development are intimately linked, but our understanding of the coupling mechanisms remains limited. Anterograde and retrograde signals together with trans-synaptic complexes enable intercellular communications. How synapse activity status is monitored and relayed across the synaptic cleft remains poorly understood. The Drosophila NMJ is a very powerful genetic system to study synapse development. BMP signaling modulates NMJ growth via a canonical, Smad-dependent pathway, but also synapse stability, via a noncanonical, Smad-independent pathway. Here we describe a novel, noncanonical BMP pathway, which is genetically distinguishable from all other known BMP pathways. This pathway does not contribute to NMJ growth and instead influences synapse formation and maturation in an activity-dependent manner. Specifically, phosphorylated Smad (pMad in flies) accumulates at active zone in response to active postsynaptic type-A glutamate receptors, a specific receptor subtype. In turn, synaptic pMad functions to promote the recruitment of type-A receptors at synaptic sites. This positive feedback loop provides a molecular switch controlling which flavor of glutamate receptors will be stabilized at synaptic locations as a function of synapse status. Since BMP signaling also controls NMJ growth and stability, BMP pathway offers an exquisite means to monitor the status of synapse activity and coordinate NMJ growth with synapse maturation and stabilization.

Nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes and graphene composite structures for energy and catalytic applications

Substitutional heteroatom doping is a promising route to modulate the outstanding material properties of carbon nanotubes and graphene for customized applications. Recently, (nitrogen-) N-doping has been introduced to ensure tunable work-function, enhanced n-type carrier concentration, diminished surface energy, and manageable polarization. Along with the promising assessment of N-doping effects, research on the N-doped carbon based composite structures is emerging for the synergistic integration with various functional materials. This invited feature article reviews the current research progress, emerging trends, and opening opportunities in N-doped carbon based composite structures. Underlying basic principles are introduced for the effective modulation of material properties of graphitic carbons by N-doping. Composite structures of N-doped graphitic carbons with various functional materials, including (i) polymers, (ii) transition metals, (iii) metal oxides, nitrides, sulphides, and (iv) semiconducting quantum dots are highlighted. Practical benefits of the synergistic composite structures are investigated in energy and catalytic applications, such as organic photovoltaics, photo/electro-catalysts, lithium ion batteries and supercapacitors, with a particular emphasis on the optimized interfacial structures and properties.

Direct Assembly of Graphene Oxide on Flexible Substrates for Highly Transparent Electrodes via the Langmuir-Blodgett Technique

The surface activity of graphene oxide (GO) offers an ideal building block upon which to construct two-dimensional (2D) nanostructures via side-by-side assembly strategies. In this work, we demonstrate the Langmuir-Blodgett assembly of GO into a 2D film with a carbon monolayer thickness on a PET substrate over a large area. After the reduction of the GO films at a low temperature, transparent flexible conducting films were realized. Our straightforward route for preparing graphene-based transparent films provides a controlled strategy to coat graphene monolayers on flexible substrates.

Evaluation of the Elecsys(®) Anti-HCV II assay for routine hepatitis C virus screening of different Asian Pacific populations and detection of early infection

BACKGROUND

Early diagnosis of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is essential to allow appropriate treatment and prevent transmission.

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the Elecsys(®) Anti-HCV II assay as a routine screening assay in Asia using a large number of samples from different Asian Pacific populations and compare its performance with other HCV assays routinely used in the region.

STUDY DESIGN

The sensitivity and specificity of the Elecsys(®) Anti-HCV II assay were determined using routine hospital samples and compared with at least one of the following comparator assays at nine independent centers: ARCHITECT™ Anti-HCV; Serodia(®)-HCV Particle Agglutination; Vitros(®) ECi Anti-HCV; Elecsys(®) Anti-HCV; ADVIA Centaur(®) HCV; InTec(®) HCV EIA; or Livzon(®) Anti-HCV. Commercially available seroconversion panels were used to assess sensitivity for early detection of infection.

RESULTS

The Elecsys(®) Anti-HCV II assay was more sensitive in recognizing early infection and detected acute HCV infection earlier on average than the comparator assays for all six panels tested. 7,726 routine samples were tested and 322 identified as HCV positive. Elecsys(®) Anti-HCV II had a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 99.66%, both of which were comparable or superior to the results obtained for competitor assays, which ranged from 87.5-100% and 98.98-100%, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

The Elecsys(®) Anti-HCV II assay has the sensitivity and specificity to support its use as a routine screening method in the Asia Pacific region. Furthermore, this assay shortens the diagnostic window between infection and the detection of antibodies compared with established methods.

Sulfonated graphene oxide/nafion composite membrane for vanadium redox flow battery

Nafion is the most frequently used as the membrane material due to its good proton conductivity, and excellent chemical and mechanical stabilities. But it is known to have poor barrier property due to its well-developed water channels. In order to overcome this drawback, graphene oxide (GO) derivatives were introduced for Nafion composite membranes. Sulfonated graphene oxide (sGO) was prepared from GO. Both sGO and GO were treated each with phenyl isocyanate and transformed into corresponding isGO and iGO in order to promote miscibility with Nafion. Then composite membranes were obtained, and the adaptability as a membrane for vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) was investigated in terms of proton conductivity and vanadium permeability. Compared to a pristine Nafion, proton conductivities of both isGO/Nafion and iGO/Nafion membranes showed less temperature sensitivity. Both membranes also showed quite lower vanadium permeability at room temperature. Selectivity of the membrane was the highest for isGO/Nafion and the lowest for the pristine Nafion.
