Advances in molecularly imprinted materials for selective adsorption of phenolic pollutants from the water environment: Synthesis, applications, and improvement

The application of molecularly imprinted material (MIM) is widely employed as a material for removing phenolic pollutants from the water environment, owing to its exceptional capacity for selective adsorption and high sensitivity. In this paper, the preparation principle, bonding types, and preparation methods of MIM have been comprehensively introduced. Meanwhile, according to the binding type of MIM with phenolic pollutants, three categories of hydroxyl bonding, hydroxyl carboxyl bonding, and hydroxyl nitro bonding were carried out to explain its application to phenolic pollutants. Strategies for addressing the challenges of selective instability, high regeneration costs, and template leakage in MIM applications were summarized. These strategies encompassed the introduction of superior carriers, enhancements in preparation processes, and the utilization of molecular dynamics simulation-assisted technology. Finally, the prospects in the three aspects of material preparation, process coupling, and recycling. In summary, this paper has demonstrated the potential of utilizing MIM for the selective treatment of phenolic pollutants from the water environment.

Designing an efficient organic-inorganic hybrid nanocomposite for simultaneous oxidative/adsorptive desulfurization of model and real fuel oils

In this study, an efficient organic-inorganic hybrid nanocomposite was designed for deep oxidative/adsorptive removal of dibenzothiophene (DBT) from model and real fuel oils employing surface molecularly imprinted polymer (SMIP) and mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs). On the surface of silanol-functionalized MCM-48-HPW prepared at different 12-tungstophosphoric acid (HPW wt%) as the oxidation catalyst, an imprinted polymethacrylic acid polymer (PMAA) as a selective adsorbent of DBT was formed using different amounts of DBT template. Then, various oxidant/sulfur molar ratios were applied during the desulfurization reactions according to the central composite design (CCD). The successful synthesis of the optimum SMIP-PMAA@MCM-48-HPW nanocomposite was confirmed by FTIR, XRD, N2-adsorption, SEM, TEM, TGA, and NMR techniques. The desulfurization percentage of the model oil reached 98.54% under the optimum conditions, and the catalyst percentage was found to be the most significant parameter for desulfurization efficiency. Comparison experiments showed that the combined role of oxidation and adsorption had an extensive impact on desulfurization efficiency. Under the optimized conditions, 96% DBT from gasoline was removed by the optimum nanocomposite. The optimum nanocomposite showed good stability and could be reused five times without a remarkable decrease in the desulfurization ability.

A recognition strategy combining effective boron affinity technology and surface imprinting to prepare highly selective and easily recyclable polymer membrane for separation of drug molecule

Cellulose acetate membrane (CAM) has become one of the most widely used membrane materials by virtue of stability and hydrophilicity. In this work, to achieve the aim of selective recognition and separation of drug molecule shikimic acid (SA), an effective recognition tactics was proposed by combining boron affinity technology with surface imprinting strategy based on cellulose acetate membrane with low price and biocompatibility. The supporting CAM material was prepared through the phase inversion technique by continuous adjustment of different factors including solvent type and kinds of pore-forming agents, and the optimal CAM with multistage structure and highly porosity was applied for the imprinting of SA. Then the imprinted polymer membrane (MIPs-CAM) was developed via boron affinity surface imprinting polymerization. Various methods (FT-IR, UV-vis, SEM, XPS, AFM and TGA) were used to characterize the structure, morphology, elemental composition, surface roughness and thermal property of the obtained membrane. The as-prepared MIPs-CAM showed homogeneous and abundant imprinted layer, good thermal stability. The batch adsorption results showed that the MIPs-CAM had fast adsorption kinetics, specific recognition ability, and the adsorption capacity could obtain 63.598 mg g^-1, which was two times higher than that of non-imprinted membrane (NIPs-CAM). The adsorption isotherms conformed to the Langmuir isotherm and the adsorption processes were spontaneous and endothermic. Additionally, the adsorption capacity of MIPs-CAM still reached 85% of the initial result after five cycles. The experimental results revealed that the molecularly imprinted membrane possessed the advantages of high selectivity and easy recovery compared with the traditional molecular imprinted polymers for SA separation. These results indicate that boron affinity MIPs-CAM with high performance will provide a promising platform for the separation and purification of other cis-diol drug molecules from environmental resources.

Preparation of porous carbon-based molecularly imprinted polymers for separation of triazine herbicides in corn

A synthesis route of using cellulose as the precursor to prepare porous carbon (PC) had been established in this study. The as-prepared PC was introduced as carriers in the synthesis process of porous carbon-molecularly imprinted polymers (PC-MIPs), which greatly improved the absorption capacity of MIPs. Triazine pesticides in corn were extracted with matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) using the PC-MIPs as dispersants and determined by ultraperformance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). Under the optimal MSPD condition for extracting six kinds of triazines (simazine, terbutryn, simetryne, prometryne, ametryn, and atrazine), the detection limits were 0.005-0.02 ng g^-1, while the precisions were 1.2-5.9%, and the recoveries were 92.6-104.7%. The method has been extensively applied to analyze various corn samples. Atrazine residue (1.2 μg kg^-1) was detected in one corn sample, which was lower than the maximum residual limit indicated by the Chinese stated standards (50 μg kg^-1).

Recent Advances in Functionalized Mesoporous Silica Frameworks for Efficient Desulfurization of Fuels

Considerable health and climate benefits arising from the use of low-sulfur fuels has propelled the research on desulfurization of fossil fuels. Ideal fuels are urgently needed and are expected to be ultra-low in sulfur (10-15 ppm), with no greater than 50 ppm sulfur content. Although several sulfur removal techniques are available in refineries and petrochemical units, their high operational costs, complex operational needs, low efficiencies, and higher environmental risks render them unviable and challenging to implement. In recent years, mesoporous silica-based materials have emerged as promising desulfurizing agents, owing to their high porosity, high surface area, and easier functionalization compared to conventional materials. In this review, we report on recent progress in the synthesis and chemistry of new functionalized mesoporous silica materials aiming to lower the sulfur content of fuels. Additionally, we discuss the role of special active sites in these sorbent materials and investigate the formulations capable of encapsulating and trapping the sulfur-based molecules, which are challenging to remove due to their complexity, for example the species present in JP-8 jet fuels.

Electrocatalytic Imprinted Polymer of N-Doped Hollow Carbon Nanosphere-Palladium Nanocomposite for Ultratrace Detection of Anticancer Drug 6-Mercaptopurine

In this work, a nanohybrid-based imprinted polymer consisting of N-doped hollow carbon nanospheres and palladium is reported for the electroanalysis of ultratrace level of anticancer drug, 6-mercaptopurine, used in the treatment of leukemia. For this, N-doped carbon nanospheres decorated with palladium were first developed, and subsequently, a molecular imprinted polymer layer was grown onto their surfaces. The so-produced silica-embedded nanocomposite was made hollow by etching silica moieties with hydrofluoric acid. Finally, the whole system was doped on an ionic-liquid-modified pencil graphite electrode. The underlying synergistic effect of hollow carbon nanosphere-supported palladium nanoparticles inculcated electrocatalytic action. Notably, all rebinding sites in solid core-shells were confined within the shell, which hampers the effective diffusion of template. However, in this work, an effective diffusion of template across the hollow structure of inner and outer surfaces was observed. Consequently, this rendered approximately 2-fold heterogeneous rate constant as compared to the solid core-shell-based sensor. Differential pulse voltammetric transduction was used for ultratrace detection of 6-mercaptopurine through anodic stripping method. The hollow imprinted sensor revealed a linear dependence of current with concentration range 0.80-70.748 ng mL^-1. The limits of detection 0.11-0.22 ng mL^-1 were realized in water, human blood plasma, urine, and pharmaceuticals. Thus, the proposed sensor demonstrated an attractive sensitivity reproducibility, as well as endurance requisite for the treatment of leukemia patients.

Influence of Size and Shape of Silica Supports on the Sol⁻Gel Surface Molecularly Imprinted Polymers for Selective Adsorption of Gossypol

The influence of various silica gel supports with different shapes and sizes on the recognition properties of surface molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) was investigated. MIPs for selective recognition and adsorption of gossypol were synthesized via the sol⁻gel process with a surface imprinting technique on silica gel substrates. 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) were chosen as the functional monomer and the cross-linker. The morphology and structure of the gossypol-MIPs were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and a standard Brunauer⁻Emett⁻Teller (BET) analysis. Results indicated that the surface imprinted polymer layer facilitated the removal and rebinding of the template, and thus, achieved fast binding kinetics. Compared with the MIPs prepared on irregularly shaped silica with a broad particle size distribution, the MIPs using regularly-shaped silica of uniform size showed higher imprinting factor (IF), and the MIP made with a relatively larger sized (60 μm) spherical silica, demonstrated higher adsorption capacity compared to the MIPs made with smaller sized, spherical silica. The MIP prepared with 60 μm spherically shaped silica, featured a fast adsorption kinetic of 10 min, and a saturated adsorption capacity of 204 mg·g−1. The gossypol-MIP had higher selectivity (IF = 2.20) for gossypol over its structurally-similar analogs ellagic acid (IF = 1.13) and quercetin (IF = 1.20). The adsorption data of the MIP correlated well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich isotherm model, which implied that chemical adsorption dominated, and that multilayer adsorption occurred. Furthermore, the MIP exhibited an excellent regeneration performance, and the adsorption capacity of the MIP for gossypol only decreased by 6% after six reused cycles, indicating good application potential for selective adsorption of gossypol.

A simple extraction method for norfloxacin from pharmaceutical wastewater with a magnetic core–shell molecularly imprinted polymer with the aid of computer simulation
