Abstract
This study comprehensively analyzes the magnetically induced current density of polycyclic compounds labeled as "aromatic chameleons" since they can arrange their π-electrons to exhibit aromaticity in both the ground and the lowest triplet state. These compounds comprise benzenoid moieties fused to a central skeleton with 4n π-electrons and traditional magnetic descriptors are biased due to the superposition of local magnetic responses. In the S0 state, our analysis reveals that the molecular constituent fragments preserve their (anti)aromatic features in agreement with two types of resonant structures: one associated with aromatic benzenoids and the other with a central antiaromatic ring. Regarding the T1 state, a global and diatropic ring current is revealed. Our aromaticity study is complemented with advanced electronic and geometric descriptors to consider different aspects of aromaticity, particularly important in the evaluation of excited state aromaticity. Remarkably, these descriptors consistently align with the general features on the main delocalization pathways in polycyclic hydrocarbons consisting of fused 4n π-electron rings. Moreover, our study demonstrates an inverse correlation between the singlet-triplet energy difference and the antiaromatic character of the central ring in S0.

Abstract
This study explores the aromaticity of doubly [5]helicene-bridged (1,4)cyclophane and triply [5]helicene-bridged (1,3,5)cyclophane via calculations of the magnetic response and of electronic aromaticity indices. The primary objective is to assess the π-electron delocalization to determine whether they sustain global ring currents associated with π aromaticity. The molecules show local ring currents in the presence of an external magnetic field. The ring currents flow diatropically in the stacked six-membered rings and in the helicene arms. However, these π currents are not interconnected due to the discontinuity of the π delocalization at the C-C single bonds connecting the central six-membered rings to the helicene arms. Electronic indices suggest that the helicene-arm systems have significantly smaller electron delocalization than benzene. The reduction in the delocalization does not compromise their ability to exhibit ring currents in the presence of an external magnetic field. The analysis provides further evidence that the magnetic criteria yield a different degree of aromaticity for the helicene arms than obtained in the calculation of the electronic aromaticity indices. However, both approaches confirm that the studied molecules are not globally aromatic.

Abstract
Nowadays, an active research topic is the connection between Clar's rule, aromaticity, and magnetic properties of polycyclic benzenoid hydrocarbons. In the present work, we employ a meticulous magnetically induced current density analysis to define the net current flowing through any cyclic circuit, connecting it to aromaticity based on the ring current concept. Our investigation reveals that the analyzed polycyclic systems display a prominent global ring current, contrasting with subdued semi-local and local ring currents. These patterns align with Clar's aromatic π-sextets only in cases where migrating π-sextet structures are invoked. The results of this study will enrich our comprehension of aromaticity and magnetic behavior in such systems, offering significant insights into coexisting ring current circuits in these systems.

Abstract
Theoretical investigations on the influence of graphene fragments on the antiaromaticity of pentalene are conducted by employing multiple aromaticity descriptors based on magnetic, geometric and electronic criteria. NICS as a sole descriptor for analysing the antiaromaticity of pentalene on graphene fragments has to be carefully considered while looking through the other aromaticity indicators.

Abstract
We have calculated the current density induced by an external magnetic field in a set of figure-eight-shaped expanded porphyrinoids. The studied octaphyrins can be divided into three classes (N2, N4, and N6) based on the number of the inner hydrogen atoms of the pyrrole rings. Using the Runge-Kutta method, the current density is split into diatropic and paratropic contributions that are analyzed separately. The calculations show that one common ring current consists of two rather independent pathways. Each of them follows the outer side of the molecular frame of one half of the molecule and passes to the inner side of the frame on the other half. The ring-current pathways are similar to the ones for [12]infinitene. However, the current density of the octaphyrins is more complex having many branching points and pathways. Vertical through-space current-density pathways pass in the middle of the molecules through a plane that is parallel to the figure-eight-shaped view of the molecules when the magnetic field is perpendicular to the plane. The isolectronic N2 and the N4 dication sustain a weak paratropic ring current inside the molecule, which is also observed in the 1H NMR magnetic shielding constant of the inner hydrogen atoms. The diatropic current-density contribution dominates in the studied molecules. For the N4 and N6 molecules, the global current-density pathways are only diatropic and N6 sustains the strongest global diatropic current-density flux of 13.2 nA T-1.

Abstract
Despite the central role of aromaticity in the chemistry of expanded porphyrins, the evaluation of aromaticity remains difficult for these extended macrocycles. The presence of multiple conjugation pathways and different planar and nonplanar π-conjugation topologies makes the quantification of global and local aromaticity even more challenging. In neutral expanded porphyrins, the predominance of the aromatic conjugation pathway passing through the imine-type nitrogens and circumventing the amino NH groups is established. However, for charged macrocycles, the question about the main conjugation circuit remains open. Accordingly, different conjugation pathways in a set of neutral, anionic, and cationic expanded porphyrins were investigated by means of several aromaticity indices rooted in the structural, magnetic, and electronic criteria. Overall, our results reveal the predominance of the conjugation pathway that passes through all nitrogen atoms to describe the aromaticity of deprotonated expanded porphyrins, while the outer pathway through the perimeter carbon atoms becomes the most aromatic in protonated macrocycles. In nonplanar and charged macrocycles, a discrepancy between electronic and magnetic descriptors is observed. Nevertheless, our work demonstrates AVmin remains the best tool to determine the main conjugation pathway of expanded porphyrins.

Abstract
Here, it is shown that the M3B12 (M = Cu-Au) clusters' global minima consist of an elongated planar B12 fragment connected by an in-plane linear M3 fragment. This result is striking since this B12 planar structure is not favored in the bare cluster, nor when one or two metals are added. The minimum energy structures were revealed by screening the potential energy surface using genetic algorithms and density functional theory calculations. Chemical bonding analysis shows that the strong electrostatic interactions with the metal compensate for the high energy spent in the M3 and B12 fragment distortion. Furthermore, metals participate in the delocalized π-bonds, which infers an aromatic character to these species.

Abstract
Benzene and pyrene can be synthetically linked to [o-COSAN]- keeping their aromaticity. In contrast, naphthalene and anthracene are extruded in the same reaction. We have proven that extrusion is only favorable if the number of Clar's π-sextets remains constant. Thus, Clar has the answer to whether an attached polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon to [o-COSAN]- is extruded or not.

Abstract
Recently, we reported a series of global minima whose structures consist of carbon rings decorated with heavier group 14 elements. Interestingly, these structures feature planar tetracoordinate carbons (ptCs) and result from the replacement of five or six protons (H+) from the cyclopentadienyl anion (C5H5−) or the pentalene dianion (C8H62−) by three or four E2+ dications (E = Si–Pb), respectively. The silicon derivatives of these series are the Si3C5 and Si4C8 clusters. Here we show that ptC persists in some clusters with an equivalent number of C and Si atoms, i.e., Si5C5, Si8C8, and Si9C9. In all these species, the ptC is embedded in a pentagonal C5 ring and participates in a three-center, two-electron (3c-2e) Si-ptC-Si σ-bond. Furthermore, these clusters are π-aromatic species according to chemical bonding analysis and magnetic criteria.

Abstract
We give an overview of the molecular response to an external magnetic field perturbing quantum mechanical systems. We present state-of-the-art methods for calculating magnetically-induced current-density susceptibilities. We discuss the essence and properties of current-density susceptibilities and how molecular magnetic properties can be calculated from them. We also review the theory of spin-current densities, how relativity affects current densities and magnetic properties. An overview of the magnetic ring-current criterion for aromaticity is given, which has implications on theoretical and experimental research. The recently reported theory of antiaromaticity and how molecular symmetry affects the magnetic response are discussed and applied to closed-shell paramagnetic molecules. The topology of magnetically induced current densities and its consequences for molecular magnetic properties are also presented with twisted and toroidal molecules as examples.

Abstract
The aromaticity of [n]starphenes (n = 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16), as well as starphene-based [19]dendriphene, is addressed by calculating the magnetically induced current density and the induced magnetic field, using the pseudo-π model. When an external magnetic field is applied, these systems create diatropic currents that split into a global peripheral current surrounding the starphene skeleton and several local currents in the acene-based arms, resulting in large shielding cones above the arms. In particular, the arm currents are smaller than their linear analogs, and in general, the strengths of the ring currents tend to weaken as the starphene get larger.

Abstract
We present an efficient implementation of paramagnetic NMR shielding tensors and shifts in a nonrelativistic and scalar-relativistic density functional theory framework. For the latter, we make use of the scalar exact two-component Hamiltonian in its local approximation, and generally we apply the well established (multipole-accelerated) resolution of the identity approximation and the seminumerical exchange approximation. The perturbed density matrix of a paramagnetic NMR shielding calculation is further used to study the magnetically induced current density and ring currents of open-shell systems as illustrated for [U@Bi12]3-. [U@Bi12]3- features delocalized highest occupied molecular orbitals and sustains a net diatropic ring current of ca. 18 nA/T through the Bi12 torus similar to the all-metal aromatic heavy-element cluster [Th@Bi12]4-.

Analysis of Local and Global Aromaticity in Si3C5 and Si4C8 Clusters. Aromatic Species Containing Planar Tetracoordinate Carbon. CHEMISTRY 2021. Abstract
The minimum energy structures of the Si3C5 and Si4C8 clusters are planar and contain planar tetracoordinate carbons (ptCs). These species have been classified, qualitatively, as global (π) and local (σ) aromatics according to the adaptive natural density partitioning (AdNDP) method, which is an orbital localization method. This work evaluates these species’ aromaticity, focusing on confirming and quantifying their global and local aromatic character. For this purpose, we use an orbital localization method based on the partitioning of the molecular space according to the topology of the electronic localization function (LOC-ELF). In addition, the magnetically induced current density is analyzed. The LOC-ELF-based analysis coincides with the AdNDP study (double aromaticity, global, and local). Moreover, the current density analysis detects global and local ring currents. The strength of the global and local current circuit is significant, involving 4n + 2 π- and σ-electrons, respectively. The latter implicates the Si-ptC-Si fragment, which would be related to the 3c-2e σ-bond detected by the orbital localization methods in this fragment.

Abstract
Cyclobutadiene (CBD) is the paradigmatic antiaromatic molecule but is known to form highly stable aromatic complexes, e.g. CBD-Fe(CO)3. This intriguing reversal of aromaticity from antiaromatic to aromatic terrain during the complexation process cannot be appropriately handled with single-reference-based theoretical techniques. We explore this aromaticity reversal, for the first time, by a detailed aromaticity analysis using magnetically induced current densities (MICD) and nucleus independent chemical shifts (NICS) using genuine ab initio multi-reference wavefunction-based theory. We trace the dramatic change of aromaticity for a prototypical cyclobutadiene complex, CBD-CH+ (CH+Fe(CO)3), considering a 3D potential energy surface for two independent parameters, namely the approach of CH+ and the automerization cross-section of cyclobutadiene. The 3D potential energy surfaces indicate the presence of a conical intersection/avoided crossing between the ground and the first excited state. The plot of aromaticity indices and the corresponding numerical values show that the change of aromaticity indices is drastic around the conical intersection/avoided crossing and automerization of cyclobutadiene plays a crucial role in the formation of cyclobutadiene complexes. Computations on analogous CBD-Be and CBD-CO systems (Be/COFe(CO)3) emphasize the generality of the conclusions drawn from the CBD-CH+ system.

Abstract
The singlet open-shell character and antiaromaticity are intriguing features in π-conjugated carbocycles. These two exhibit similar chemical and physical properties. However, they rarely coexist in the same molecule. Understanding the interrelation between the open-shell and antiaromatic characteristics in the same molecule is crucial to control the electronic properties. Herein we describe the synthesis and characterization of a new member of diareno[a,f]pentalene, benzo[a]naphtho[2,3-f]pentalene 6. Unlike its isomer 5 with a closed-shell ground state, 6 exhibits an appreciable open-shell character and a moderate antiaromatic feature. The behaviors of the open-shell index (y0 ) against the difference of the proton chemical signal (Δδ(H1 )) between pentalenide dianions/neutral pentalenes for our reported pentalenes 1, 4, 5, and 6 give a thought-provoking conclusion about the interrelation between open-shell and antiaromatic characteristics in this series. The mode of the incorporated quinoidal moiety and the formal molecular symmetry are critical to balance these two characteristics.

Abstract
The concept of local aromaticity has been successfully utilized in understanding the stability of certain atomic clusters. However, all the skeleton atoms in these clusters are covered by at least one local aromatic feature, collectively making the multiple local aromaticities coexist globally. Herein we show the robustness of local aromaticity as a tool for the discovery of novel magic clusters: not all of the skeleton atoms need to be covered by an aromatic feature to make the cluster magic. In this study, the PtMg2,3 H5 - cluster anions are generated by a unique high-current pulsed discharge ion source and found to be magic numbers using mass spectrometry. Photoelectron spectroscopy and calculations confirm that only the PtH4 2- kernels in these clusters are locally aromatic. Based on these results, we propose that local aromaticity can be gainfully utilized as a new potential magic rule in the search for magic numbers.

Abstract
Abstract
Current definitions of aromaticity are purely phenomenological and relate symmetry, reactive stability and the occurrence of molecular diamagnetic response currents. The antithetical concept of antiaromaticity provides a connection between the contrary properties: structural instability or distortion out of higher symmetry, a small HOMO-LUMO gap, and paramagnetic response currents. We reveal the symmetry principle that is underlying antiaromaticity by showing an intimate and strict symmetry induced relation between these properties. The principle is mathematically rigorous and can be formulated like: First order (and related) Jahn-Teller distorted molecules out of non-cubic and non-icosahedral point groups are prone to induced paramagnetism in magnetic fields parallel to the main axis of symmetry. We show by the exemplary cases of cyclobutadiene, cyclcooctatetraene, pentalene and manganese trifluoride how this principle works and discuss this new perspective on antiaromaticity.

Abstract
The aromaticity of three nonplanar, fully conjugated aza-nanographenes built around a pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole core is assessed through the application of two different computational procedures-GIMIC and NICS. We examine the calculated magnetically induced current densities (GIMIC) and nucleus-independent chemical shifts (NICS). The structural differences between these three apparently similar molecules lead to significantly different aromatic properties. GIMIC analysis indicates that the peripheral diatropic ring current of 3.9 nA/T for the studied bowl-shaped diaza-nanographene is the strongest, followed by the double [6]helicene which lacks seven-membered rings, and is practically nonexistent for the double [5]helicene possessing seven-membered rings. The biggest difference however is that in the two not-fully-fused molecules, the central pyrrole rings possess a significant diatropic current of about 4.1 nA/T, whereas there is no such current in the diaza-nanographene. Moreover, the antiaromaticity of the seven-membered rings is increasing while moving from double [5]helicene to diaza-nanographene (from -2.4 to -6.0 nA/T). The induced currents derived from NICSπ,zz-XY-scan analysis for all of the studied systems are in qualitative agreement with the GIMIC results. Subtle differences may originate from σ-electron currents in GIMIC or inaccuracy of NICSπ,zz values due to the nonplanarity of the systems, but the general picture is similar.

Abstract
A computational study of the magnetically-induced current (MIC) density has been carried out for a variety of ortho fused polycyclic aromatic molecules at the density functional theory level with the gauge including magnetically induced current (GIMIC) method. With this method, the aromatic character of each ring in a homologous series of carbohelicenes with an increasing number of fused benzene rings is assessed and compared with other aromaticity criteria such as the Nucleus Independent Chemical Shift [NICS(0), NICSzz(0)] and Bond Length Alternation (BLA) parameters. All criteria indicate that the two outer rings are the most aromatic ones [i.e. higher induced current, more negative NICS(0) and NICSzz(0) values, and smaller BLA values]. For the large helicenes (n > 10), the current drops along the following four rings and then rises again. Additionally, we have proven that this behavior is not due to a difference of the local magnetic field coming from a difference of orientation of the ring with respect to the external magnetic field (oriented along the helical axis). Upon fusing additional benzene rings to form hexa-peri-hexabenzo[7]helicene, some rings (B, D, and F) are a lot less aromatic (even non-aromatic) than the others. The NICS(0) and NICSzz(0) values exaggerate this behavior because they are all positive values, which is a signature of antiaromaticity. Then, when substituting one, three, or four benzene rings with pyrrole ones to form mono-aza-[7]-helicene, tri-aza-[7]-helicene, and tetra-aza-[7]-helicene, remarkable changes in the electronic structures of the helicenes are observed. Indeed, the induced currents are always smaller in the pyrrole rings than in the benzene ones. This has been further investigated using the streamline and the color map representations, which indicate that the diatropic current density passing through the plane cutting the C-N bonds in the pyrrole rings is stronger but is more localized than the current density passing through the plane cutting the C-C bonds in the benzene rings. This gives a positive but smaller total induced current for the pyrrole rings than for the benzene ones. For these systems, the NICS(0) and even more the NICSzz(0) values are not fully reliable to probe the local aromaticity, contrary to the induced current. Indeed, the NICSzz(0) values for the tri-aza-[7]-helicene molecule range from -14.23 to 1.14 ppm, which cannot lead to the same conclusion as the induced current values (10.03 to 12.87 nA T-1).

Abstract
The di-reduced state of the naphthalene moiety and its congeners have long captivated chemists as it is elusive to stabilize these intrinsically reactive electron-rich π-systems and for their emergent multifaceted properties. Herein we report the synthesis and isolation of two-electron (2e-) reduced, highly electron-rich naphthalenediimides (NDIs). A doubly zwitterionic structure is observed for the first time in a naphthalene moiety and validated by single crystal X-ray crystallography and spectroscopic methods. The synthesis avoids hazardous reducing agents and offers an easy, high-yielding route to bench-stable di-reduced NDIs. Notably, we realized high negative first oxidation potentials of up to -0.730 V vs. Fc/Fc+ in these systems, which establish these systems to be one of the strongest ambient stable electron donors. The study also provides the first insights into the NMR spectra of the di-reduced systems revealing a large decrease in diatropicity of the naphthalene ring compared to its 2e- oxidized form. The NICS, NICS-XY global ring current, gauge-including magnetically induced current (GIMIC) and AICD ring current density calculations revealed switching of the antiaromatic and aromatic states at the naphthalene and the imide rings, respectively, in the di-reduced system compared to the 2e- oxidized form. Notably, the substituents at the phosphonium groups significantly tune the antiaromatic-aromatic states and donor ability, and bestow an array of colors to the di-reduced systems by virtue of intramolecular through-space communication with the NDI scaffold. Computational studies showed intramolecular noncovalent interactions to provide additional stability to these unprecedented doubly zwitterionic systems.

Abstract
Relationships accounting for contributions to the first-order charge density ρ(1) and current density J(1), induced in the electrons of a molecule by a monochromatic plane wave, have been obtained via time-dependent quantum mechanical perturbation theory. Their gauge invariance and invariance in passive translations of the coordinate system have been demonstrated (i) within the (long wavelengths) electric dipole approximation, in which only the electric field contributions to these densities are required, and (ii) within the electric quadrupole approximation, in which nonseparable terms provided by the magnetic field and by the electric field gradient, assumed uniform over the molecular domain, are needed. It is shown that the physical meaning of current density tensors depending on the frequency ω of the monochromatic wave shone on the molecule, and corresponding to derivatives of the current density J(1)(r, ω) with respect to components of the perturbing fields, is that of property density. Therefore, frequency-dependent current density tensors can be interpreted as the integrand function in 3d-space integrals defining dynamic molecular response tensors, e.g., electric dipole, mixed electric dipole-magnetic dipole, and electric dipole-quadrupole polarizabilites. Plots of current density tensors are expected to provide important information on the molecular domains giving dominant contributions to these properties.

Abstract
The definition and measurement of local and global aromaticity in fused ring polycyclic aromatic compounds is a complex issue. Historically, these types of molecules have been explored in this capacity by way of experimental (NMR, thermochemistry) and computational (NICS, HOMA) analyses. We previously showed how borepin rings with [ b, f] arene fusions can be used as experimental magnetic aromaticity reporters via the remaining protons attached to the borepin rings. In this report, we describe a joint experimental and computational analysis of several borepin-containing polycyclic aromatic molecules in order to draw conclusions about the influence of ring fusion on aromaticity. We find that the borepin ring within these extended structures is a unique motif with limited σ-contribution to aromaticity while still displaying a wide range of structural and magnetic aromatic character.

Abstract
Expressions for the first-order polarization charge density ρ (1) and current density J (1) induced in a molecule by a monochromatic plane wave, obtained by time-dependent quantum mechanical perturbation theory, have been investigated to assess their gauge invariance and independence of the coordinate system in passive and active translations. The conditions arrived at show that, within the (long wavelengths) dipole approximation, only the electric contributions to these densities are needed to rationalize the phenomenology. To the next higher quadrupole approximation, assuming that the magnetic field and the electric field gradient are uniform over the molecular dimensions, corresponding contributions to ρ (1) and J (1) are considered. It has been found that total densities are independent of the origin, whereas the contributions from electric and magnetic fields are not separately invariant. A magnetic contribution to J (1), which is by itself origin independent, can be defined by means of an approach based on continuous translation of the origin of the coordinate system.

Planar ten-membered 10-π-electron aromatic (CH) 5(XH) 5 {X = Ge, Sn} systems. J Mol Model 2018; 24:264. Abstract
Being monocyclic planar, benzene retains 6π Hückel aromatic backbone. However, for larger analogues, the repulsion between vicinal C-H bonds makes them nonplanar, as for [10]-annulene. Thus, on this basis, a planar 10-π-aromatic C10H10 is unreachable. A detailed structural comparison among the C3H3+, C4H42+, C5H5-, C6H6, C7H7+, C8H82+, C9H9-, and C10H10 systems supports that the repulsion between vicinal C-H bonds is the primary reason for the loss of planarity, despite the favorable aromatic electron count. In this respect, here we have discussed ten-membered monocyclic planar 10-π-aromatic, (CH)5(XH)5 {X = Si, Ge, Sn} systems, modeled by using DFT. From NBO analysis and the overall magnetic behavior it is shown that (CH)5(GeH)5, (CH)5(SnH)5 molecules are promising planar 10-π-aromatic system. Thus, such species represent plausible Hückel aromatic rings retaining a ten-membered backbone as discussed here, which may lead to the characterization of novel species expanding the chemistry of larger aromatic rings. We believe that the present study may open new avenues in the formation of 10-π-aromatic species. Graphical abstract Molecular modeling in quest of a planar 10-membered 10-π-electron aromatic system.

Abstract
Aromatic properties of two recently synthesized dithienothiophene-bridged (DTT) [34]octaphyrins have been investigated by calculating magnetically induced current densities and vertical excitation energies. These intriguing molecules have been proposed to be the first synthesized neutral bicycloaromatic compounds. The triplet state of their dications was even suggested to be Baird-type bicycloaromatic rendering them very interesting as a new prototype of molecules possessing simultaneously the two rare types of aromaticity. Here, we investigate computationally the aromatic properties of the neutral as well as the singly and doubly charged DTT-bridged [34]octaphyrins. Our study provides unambiguous information about changes in the aromatic properties of the DTT-bridged [34]octaphyrins upon oxidation. The calculations identify two independent diatropic ring currents in the neutral DTT-bridged [34]octaphyrins, showing that they are indeed bicycloaromatic. The current-density flow of the two independent ring currents of the bicycloaromatic compounds are visualized and individual aromatic pathways are quantified by performing numerical integration. The calculations show that two independent diatropic ring currents can indeed be sustained by molecules consisting of two aromatic rings that share a common set of π electrons. The current density calculations on the singly charged DTT-bridged [34]octaphyrins show that they are weakly antiaromatic, which does not agree with the suggested aromatic character deduced from spectroscopical studies. The triplet state of the two DTT-bridged [34]octaphyrin cations with very similar molecular structures have unexpectedly different aromatic character. One of them is Baird-type bicycloaromatic, whereas the triplet state of the other dication has one aromatic and one nonaromatic ring, which could not be resolved from available spectroscopical data. Calculations of excitation energies reveal that a simple model cannot be employed for interpreting the electronic excitation spectra of the present molecules, because more than 20 excited states contribute to the spectra above 2.5 eV (500 nm) showing the importance of computations. The present work illustrates how detailed information about molecular aromaticity can nowadays be obtained by scrutinizing calculated current densities.

Abstract
Magnetically induced current density susceptibilities have been studied for a number of cyclic ethyne- and butadiyne-bridged porphyrin and isoporphyrin arrays. The current density susceptibilities have been calculated using the gauge-including magnetically induced current (GIMIC) method, which is interfaced to the TURBOMOLE quantum chemistry code. Aromatic properties and current pathways have been analyzed and discussed by numerical integration of the current density susceptibilities passing selected chemical bonds yielding current strength susceptibilities. Despite the interrupted π-framework, zinc(ii) isoporphyrin sustains a ring current of ca. 10 nA T-1. Porphyrin and isoporphyrin dimers sustain a significant current strength at the linker, whereas the larger porphyrinoid arrays sustain mainly local ring currents. Isoporphyrin dimers with saturated meso carbons have strong net diatropic ring-current strengths of 20 nA T-1 fulfilling Hückels aromaticity rule. Porphyrin trimers and tetramers exhibit almost no current strength at the linker. The porphyrin moieties maintain their strong net diatropic ring current.

Abstract
The use of cyclic polyene perimeter-model approaches, such as Gouterman's four-orbital model and Michl's perimeter model, to analyze trends in the electronic structures and optical properties of expanded, contracted, and isomeric porphyrins is described with an emphasis on the use of magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy to validate the results of TD-DFT calculations. Trends in the electronic structures and optical properties of isomeric porphyrins are examined by comparing the properties of porphycenes, corrphycenes, hemiporphycenes, isoporphycenes, N-confused and neoconfused porphyrins, and norroles, whereas those of ring-contracted porphyrins are examined by comparing the properties of subporphyrins, triphyrins, and vacataporphyrins. The ring-expanded compounds that are examined include cyclo[n]pyrroles, [22]pentaphyrins(1.1.1.1.1), sapphyrins, smaragdyrins, isosmaragdyrins, orangarins, ozaphyrins, [26]hexaphyrins(1.1.1.1.1.1), rubyrins, rosarins, amethyrins, isoamethyrins, bronzaphyrins, and doubly N-confused hexaphyrins.

Abstract
Gauge-origin independent current density susceptibility tensors have been computed using the gauge-including magnetically induced current (GIMIC) method. The anisotropy of the magnetically induced current density (ACID) functions constructed from the current density susceptibility tensors are therefore gauge-origin independent. The ability of the gauge-origin independent ACID function to provide quantitative information about the current flow along chemical bonds has been assessed by integrating the cross-section area of the ACID function in the middle of chemical bonds. Analogously, the current strength susceptibility passing a given plane through the molecule is obtained by numerical integration of the current flow parallel to the normal vector of the integration plane. The cross-section area of the ACID function is found to be strongly dependent on the exact location of the integration plane, which is in sheer contrast to the calculated ring-current strength susceptibilities that are practically independent of the chosen position of the integration plane. The gauge-origin independent ACID functions plotted for different isosurface values show that a visual assessment of the current flow and degree of aromaticity depends on the chosen isosurface. The present study shows that ACID functions are not an unambiguous means to estimate the degree of molecular aromaticity according to the magnetic criterion and to determine the current pathway of complex molecular rings.
