Engineering biomimetic scaffolds for bone regeneration: Chitosan/alginate/polyvinyl alcohol-based double-network hydrogels with carbon nanomaterials

In this study, new types of hybrid double-network (DN) hydrogels composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), chitosan (CH), and sodium alginate (SA) are introduced, with the hypothesis that this combination and incorporating multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) will enhance osteogenetic differentiation and the structural and mechanical properties of scaffolds for bone tissue engineering applications. Initially, the impact of varying mass ratios of the PVA/CH/SA mixture on mechanical properties, swelling ratio, and degradability was examined. Based on this investigation, a mass ratio of 4:6:6 was determined to be optimal. At this ratio, the hydrogel demonstrated a Young's modulus of 47.5 ± 5 kPa, a swelling ratio of 680 ± 6 % after 3 h, and a degradation rate of 46.5 ± 5 % after 40 days. In the next phase, following the determination of the optimal mass ratio, CNTs and GNPs were incorporated into the 4:6:6 composite resulting in a significant enhancement in the electrical conductivity and stiffness of the scaffolds. The introduction of CNTs led to a notable increase of 36 % in the viability of MG63 osteoblast cells. Additionally, the inhibition zone test revealed that GNPs and CNTs increased the diameter of the inhibition zone by 49.6 % and 52.6 %, respectively.

Tadpole-Like Carbon Nanotube with Fe Nanoparticle Encapsulated at the Head and Zn Single-Atom Anchored on the Body: One-Pot Carbonization for Tetramodal Synergistic Cancer Therapy

Precise integration of diverse therapeutic approaches into nanomaterials is the key to the development of multimodal synergistic cancer therapy. In this work, tadpole-like carbon nanotubes with Fe nanoparticle encapsulated at the head and Zn single-atom anchored on the body (Fe@CNT-Zn) is precisely designed and facilely prepared via one-pot carbonization. In vitro studies revealed the integration of chemotherapy (CT), chemodynamic therapy (CDT), photothermal therapy (PTT), and photodynamic therapy (PDT) in Fe@CNT-Zn as well as the near-infrared light (NIR)-responsive cascade therapeutic efficacy. Furthermore, in vivo studies demonstrated the NIR-triggered cascade-amplifying synergistic cancer therapy in a B16 tumor-bearing mouse model. The results not only showcased the Fe@CNT-Zn as a potential tetramodal therapeutic platform, but also demonstrated a proof-of-concept on metal-organic framework-based "one stone for multiple birds" strategy for in situ functionalization of carbon materials.

Fabrication of pure Bi2WO6 and Bi2WO6/MWCNTs nanocomposite as potential antibacterial and anticancer agents

An essential research area for scientists is the development of high-performing, inexpensive, non-toxic antibacterial materials that prevent the transfer of bacteria. In this study, pure Bi2WO6 and Bi2WO6/MWCNTs nanocomposite were prepared by hydrothermal method. A series of characterization results by using XRD FTIR, Raman, FESEM, TEM, and EDS analyses, reveal the formation of orthorhombic nanoflakes Bi2WO6 by the addition of NaOH and pH adjustment to 7. Compared to pure Bi2WO6, the Bi2WO6/MWCNTs nanocomposite exhibited that CNTs are efficiently embedded into the structure of Bi2WO6 which results in charge transfer between metal ion electrons and the conduction or valence band of Bi2WO6 and MWCNTs and result in shifting to longer wavelength as shown in UV-visible and PL. The results confirmed that MWCNTs are stuck to the surface of the microflowers, and some of them embedded inside the Bi2WO6 nanoflakes without affecting the structure of Bi2WO6 nanoflakes as demonstrated by TEM. In addition, Pure Bi2WO6 and the Bi2WO6/MWCNTs nanocomposite were tested against P. mirabilis and S. mutans., confirming the effect of addition MWCNTs materials had better antibacterial activity in opposition to both bacterial strains than pure Bi2WO6. Besides, pure Bi2WO6 and the Bi2WO6/MWCNTs nanocomposite tested for cytotoxicity against lung MTT test on Hep-G2 liver cancer cells, and flow-cytometry. Results indicated that pure Bi2WO6 and the Bi2WO6/MWCNTs nanocomposite have significant anti-cancer efficacy against Hep-G2 cells in vitro. In addition, the findings demonstrated that Bi2WO6 and Bi2WO6/MWCNTs triggered cell death via increasing ROS. Based on these findings, it appears that pure Bi2WO6 and the Bi2WO6/MWCNTs nanocomposite have the potential to be developed as nanotherapeutics for the treatment of bacterial infections, and liver cancer.

Advances in selenium from materials to applications

Over the past few decades, single-element semiconductors have received a great deal of attention due to their unique light-sensitive and heat-sensitive properties, which are of great application and research significance. As one promising material, selenium, being a typical semiconductor, has attracted significant attention from researchers due to its unique properties including high optical conductivity, anisotropic, thermal conductivity, and so on. To promote the application of selenium nanomaterials in various fields, numerous studies over the past few decades have successfully synthesized selenium nanomaterials in various morphologies using a wide range of physical and chemical methods. In this paper, we review and summarise the different methods of synthesis of various morphologies of selenium nanomaterials and discuss the applications of different nanostructures of selenium nanomaterials in optoelectronic devices, chemical sensors, and biomedical applications. Finally, we discuss possible challenges for selenium nanodevices and provide an outlook on the future applications of selenium nanomaterials.

Current developments and future perspectives of nanotechnology in orthopedic implants: an updated review

Orthopedic implants are the most commonly used fracture fixation devices for facilitating the growth and development of incipient bone and treating bone diseases and defects. However, most orthopedic implants suffer from various drawbacks and complications, including bacterial adhesion, poor cell proliferation, and limited resistance to corrosion. One of the major drawbacks of currently available orthopedic implants is their inadequate osseointegration at the tissue-implant interface. This leads to loosening as a result of immunological rejection, wear debris formation, low mechanical fixation, and implant-related infections. Nanotechnology holds the promise to offer a wide range of innovative technologies for use in translational orthopedic research. Nanomaterials have great potential for use in orthopedic applications due to their exceptional tribological qualities, high resistance to wear and tear, ability to maintain drug release, capacity for osseointegration, and capability to regenerate tissue. Furthermore, nanostructured materials possess the ability to mimic the features and hierarchical structure of native bones. They facilitate cell proliferation, decrease the rate of infection, and prevent biofilm formation, among other diverse functions. The emergence of nanostructured polymers, metals, ceramics, and carbon materials has enabled novel approaches in orthopaedic research. This review provides a concise overview of nanotechnology-based biomaterials utilized in orthopedics, encompassing metallic and nonmetallic nanomaterials. A further overview is provided regarding the biomedical applications of nanotechnology-based biomaterials, including their application in orthopedics for drug delivery systems and bone tissue engineering to facilitate scaffold preparation, surface modification of implantable materials to improve their osteointegration properties, and treatment of musculoskeletal infections. Hence, this review article offers a contemporary overview of the current applications of nanotechnology in orthopedic implants and bone tissue engineering, as well as its prospective future applications.

Biomedical Applications of CNT-Based Fibers

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been regarded as emerging materials in various applications. However, the range of biomedical applications is limited due to the aggregation and potential toxicity of powder-type CNTs. To overcome these issues, techniques to assemble them into various macroscopic structures, such as one-dimensional fibers, two-dimensional films, and three-dimensional aerogels, have been developed. Among them, carbon nanotube fiber (CNTF) is a one-dimensional aggregate of CNTs, which can be used to solve the potential toxicity problem of individual CNTs. Furthermore, since it has unique properties due to the one-dimensional nature of CNTs, CNTF has beneficial potential for biomedical applications. This review summarizes the biomedical applications using CNTF, such as the detection of biomolecules or signals for biosensors, strain sensors for wearable healthcare devices, and tissue engineering for regenerating human tissues. In addition, by considering the challenges and perspectives of CNTF for biomedical applications, the feasibility of CNTF in biomedical applications is discussed.

Single-Walled (Magnetic) Carbon Nanotubes in a Pectin Matrix in the Design of an Allantoin Delivery System

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) outperform other materials due to their high conductivity, large specific surface area, and chemical resistance. They have numerous biomedical applications, including the magnetization of the SWCNT (mSWCNT). The drug loading and release properties of see-through pectin hydrogels doped with SWCNTs and mSWCNTs were evaluated in this study. The active molecule in the hydrogel structure is allantoin, and calcium chloride serves as a cross-linker. In addition to mixing, absorption, and swelling techniques, drug loading into carbon nanotubes was also been studied. To characterize the films, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, surface contact angle measurements, and opacity analysis were carried out. Apart from these, a rheological analysis was also carried out to examine the flow properties of the hydrogels. The study was also expanded to include N-(9-fluorenyl methoxycarbonyl)glycine-coated SWCNTs and mSWCNTs as additives to evaluate the efficiency of the drug-loading approach. Although the CNT additive was used at a 1:1000 weight ratio, it had a significant impact on the hydrogel properties. This effect, which was first observed in the thermal properties, was confirmed in rheological analyses by increasing solution viscosity. Additionally, rheological analysis and drug release profiles show that the type of additive causes a change in the matrix structure. According to TGA findings, even though SWCNTs and mSWCNTs were not coated more than 5%, the coating had a significant effect on drug release control. In addition to all findings, cell viability tests revealed that hydrogels with various additives could be used for visual wound monitoring, hyperthermia treatment, and allantoin release in wound treatment applications.

Porous materials as effective chemiresistive gas sensors

Chemiresistive gas sensors (CGSs) have revolutionized the field of gas sensing by providing a low-power, low-cost, and highly sensitive means of detecting harmful gases. This technology works by measuring changes in the conductivity of materials when they interact with a testing gas. While semiconducting metal oxides and two-dimensional (2D) materials have been used for CGSs, they suffer from poor selectivity to specific analytes in the presence of interfering gases and require high operating temperatures, resulting in high signal-to-noise ratios. However, nanoporous materials have emerged as a promising alternative for CGSs due to their high specific surface area, unsaturated metal actives, and density of three-dimensional inter-connected conductive and pendant functional groups. Porous materials have demonstrated excellent response and recovery times, remarkable selectivity, and the ability to detect gases at extremely low concentrations. Herein, our central emphasis is on all aspects of CGSs, with a primary focus on the use of porous materials. Further, we discuss the basic sensing mechanisms and parameters, different types of popular sensing materials, and the critical explanations of various mechanisms involved throughout the sensing process. We have provided examples of remarkable performance demonstrated by sensors using these materials. In addition to this, we compare the performance of porous materials with traditional metal-oxide semiconductors (MOSs) and 2D materials. Finally, we discussed future aspects, shortcomings, and scope for improvement in sensing performance, including the use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), and porous organic polymers (POPs), as well as their hybrid counterparts. Overall, CGSs using porous materials have the potential to address a wide range of applications, including monitoring water quality, detecting harmful chemicals, improving surveillance, preventing natural disasters, and improving healthcare.

Nanotechnology's frontier in combatting infectious and inflammatory diseases: prevention and treatment

Inflammation-associated diseases encompass a range of infectious diseases and non-infectious inflammatory diseases, which continuously pose one of the most serious threats to human health, attributed to factors such as the emergence of new pathogens, increasing drug resistance, changes in living environments and lifestyles, and the aging population. Despite rapid advancements in mechanistic research and drug development for these diseases, current treatments often have limited efficacy and notable side effects, necessitating the development of more effective and targeted anti-inflammatory therapies. In recent years, the rapid development of nanotechnology has provided crucial technological support for the prevention, treatment, and detection of inflammation-associated diseases. Various types of nanoparticles (NPs) play significant roles, serving as vaccine vehicles to enhance immunogenicity and as drug carriers to improve targeting and bioavailability. NPs can also directly combat pathogens and inflammation. In addition, nanotechnology has facilitated the development of biosensors for pathogen detection and imaging techniques for inflammatory diseases. This review categorizes and characterizes different types of NPs, summarizes their applications in the prevention, treatment, and detection of infectious and inflammatory diseases. It also discusses the challenges associated with clinical translation in this field and explores the latest developments and prospects. In conclusion, nanotechnology opens up new possibilities for the comprehensive management of infectious and inflammatory diseases.

A facile strategy for the preparation of carbon nanotubes/polybutadiene crosslinked composite membrane and its application in osmotic energy harvesting

The osmotic energy between riverine water and seawater can be converted into electricity by reverse electrodialysis (RED). However, the facile fabrication of advanced RED membranes with high energy conversion efficiencies, large areas, and excellent mechanical properties remains a challenge. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) exhibit excellent conductivity and provide suitable channels for ion transport but cannot form membranes independently, which limits the related applications in osmotic energy conversion. Herein, a new organic-inorganic composite membrane is prepared by combining hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene as a matrix and carbon nanotubes as transport nanochannels. The nanotubes are pre-subjected to plasma treatment to increase the surface charge density and transport capacity of the nanochannels, improving the ion selectivity and energy conversion efficiency. Under actual seawater/river water conditions, the developed membrane delivers a power density of ∼5.1 W/m2 and shows good mechanical strength (219 MPa). Our work provides a facile solution to the problem posed by the inability of ideal nanochannels to form membranes independently and paves the way for the application of RED membranes in osmotic energy conversion.

Applications of Bioengineered Polymer in the Field of Nano-Based Drug Delivery

The most favored route of drug administration is oral administration; however, several factors, including poor solubility, low bioavailability, and degradation, in the severe gastrointestinal environment frequently compromise the effectiveness of drugs taken orally. Bioengineered polymers have been developed to overcome these difficulties and enhance the delivery of therapeutic agents. Polymeric nanoparticles, including carbon dots, fullerenes, and quantum dots, have emerged as crucial components in this context. They provide a novel way to deliver various therapeutic materials, including proteins, vaccine antigens, and medications, precisely to the locations where they are supposed to have an effect. The promise of this integrated strategy, which combines nanoparticles with bioengineered polymers, is to address the drawbacks of conventional oral medication delivery such as poor solubility, low bioavailability, and early degradation. In recent years, we have seen substantially increased interest in bioengineered polymers because of their distinctive qualities, such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, and flexible physicochemical characteristics. The different bioengineered polymers, such as chitosan, alginate, and poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid), can shield medications or antigens from degradation in unfavorable conditions and aid in the administration of drugs orally through mucosal delivery with lower cytotoxicity, thus used in targeted drug delivery. Future research in this area should focus on optimizing the physicochemical properties of these polymers to improve their performance as drug delivery carriers.

Microwave-Assisted Synthesis as a Promising Tool for the Preparation of Materials Containing Defective Carbon Nanostructures: Implications on Properties and Applications

In this review, we focus on a small section of the literature that deals with the materials containing pristine defective carbon nanostructures (CNs) and those incorporated into the larger systems containing carbon atoms, heteroatoms, and inorganic components.. Briefly, we discuss only those topics that focus on structural defects related to introducing perturbation into the surface topology of the ideal lattice structure. The disorder in the crystal structure may vary in character, size, and location, which significantly modifies the physical and chemical properties of CNs or their hybrid combination. We focus mainly on the method using microwave (MW) irradiation, which is a powerful tool for synthesizing and modifying carbon-based solid materials due to its simplicity, the possibility of conducting the reaction in solvents and solid phases, and the presence of components of different chemical natures. Herein, we will emphasize the advantages of synthesis using MW-assisted heating and indicate the influence of the structure of the obtained materials on their physical and chemical properties. It is the first review paper that comprehensively summarizes research in the context of using MW-assisted heating to modify the structure of CNs, paying attention to its remarkable universality and simplicity. In the final part, we emphasize the role of MW-assisted heating in creating defects in CNs and the implications in designing their properties and applications. The presented review is a valuable source summarizing the achievements of scientists in this area of research.

Zero-Dimensional Carbon Nanomaterials for Fluorescent Sensing and Imaging

Advances in nanotechnology and nanomaterials have attracted considerable interest and play key roles in scientific innovations in diverse fields. In particular, increased attention has been focused on carbon-based nanomaterials exhibiting diverse extended structures and unique properties. Among these materials, zero-dimensional structures, including fullerenes, carbon nano-onions, carbon nanodiamonds, and carbon dots, possess excellent bioaffinities and superior fluorescence properties that make these structures suitable for application to environmental and biological sensing, imaging, and therapeutics. This review provides a systematic overview of the classification and structural properties, design principles and preparation methods, and optical properties and sensing applications of zero-dimensional carbon nanomaterials. Recent interesting breakthroughs in the sensitive and selective sensing and imaging of heavy metal pollutants, hazardous substances, and bioactive molecules as well as applications in information encryption, super-resolution and photoacoustic imaging, and phototherapy and nanomedicine delivery are the main focus of this review. Finally, future challenges and prospects of these materials are highlighted and envisaged. This review presents a comprehensive basis and directions for designing, developing, and applying fascinating fluorescent sensors fabricated based on zero-dimensional carbon nanomaterials for specific requirements in numerous research fields.

Advances and Prospects in Materials for Craniofacial Bone Reconstruction

The craniofacial region is composed of 23 bones, which provide crucial function in keeping the normal position of brain and eyeballs, aesthetics of the craniofacial complex, facial movements, and visual function. Given the complex geometry and architecture, craniofacial bone defects not only affect the normal craniofacial structure but also may result in severe craniofacial dysfunction. Therefore, the exploration of rapid, precise, and effective reconstruction of craniofacial bone defects is urgent. Recently, developments in advanced bone tissue engineering bring new hope for the ideal reconstruction of the craniofacial bone defects. This report, presenting a first-time comprehensive review of recent advances of biomaterials in craniofacial bone tissue engineering, overviews the modification of traditional biomaterials and development of advanced biomaterials applying to craniofacial reconstruction. Challenges and perspectives of biomaterial development in craniofacial fields are discussed in the end.

Hazardous impacts of glyphosate on human and environment health: Occurrence and detection in food

With the ever-increasing human population, farming lands are decreasing every year, therefore, for effective crop management; agricultural scientists are continually developing new strategies. However, small plants and herbs always impart a much loss in the yields of the crop and farmers are using tons of herbicides to eradicate that problem. Across the world, several herbicides are available in the market for effective crop management, however, scientists observed various environmental and health effects of the herbicides. Over the past 40 years, the herbicide glyphosate has been used extensively with the assumption of negligible effects on the environment and human health. However, in recent years, concerns have increased globally about the potential direct and indirect effects on human health due to the excessive use of glyphosate. As well, the toxicity on ecosystems and the possible effects on all living creatures have long been at the center of a complex discrepancy about the authorization for its use. The World Health Organization also further classified glyphosate as a carcinogenic toxic component and it was banned in 2017 due to numerous life-threatening side effects on human health. In the present era, the residues of banned glyphosate are more prevalent in agricultural and environmental samples which are directly affecting human health. Various reports revealed the detailed extraction process of glyphosate from different categories of the food matrix. Therefore, in the present review, to reveal the importance of glyphosate monitoring in the food matrix, we discussed the environmental and health effects of glyphosate with acute toxicity levels. Also, the effect of glyphosate on aquatic life is discussed in detail and various detection methods such as fluorescence, chromatography, and colorimetric techniques from different food samples with a limit of detection values are revealed. Overall, this review will give an in-depth insight into the various toxicological aspects and detection of glyphosate from food matrix using various advanced analytical techniques.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes induce arachidonate 5-lipoxygenase expression and enhance the polarization and function of M1 macrophages in vitro

Fibrogenic carbon nanotubes (CNTs) induce the polarization of M1 and M2 macrophages in mouse lungs. Polarization of the macrophages regulates the production of proinflammatory and pro-resolving lipid mediators (LMs) to mediate acute inflammation and its resolution in a time-dependent manner. Here we examined the molecular mechanism by which multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs, Mitsui-7) induce M1 polarization in vitro. Treatment of murine macrophages (J774A.1) with Mitsui-7 MWCNTs increased the expression of Alox5 mRNA and protein in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. The MWCNTs induced the expression of CD68 and that induction persisted for up to 3 days post-exposure. The expression and activity of inducible nitric oxide synthase, an intracellular marker of M1, were increased by MWCNTs. Consistent with M1 polarization, the MWCNTs induced the production and secretion of proinflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β, and proinflammatory LMs leukotriene B4 (LTB4) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). The cell-free media from MWCNT-polarized macrophages induced the migration of neutrophilic cells (differentiated from HL-60), which was blocked by Acebilustat, a specific leukotriene A4 hydrolase inhibitor, or LY239111, an LTB4 receptor antagonist, but not NS-398, a cyclooxygenase 2 inhibitor, revealing LTB4 as a major mediator of neutrophil chemotaxis from MWCNT-polarized macrophages. Knockdown of Alox5 using specific small hairpin-RNA suppressed MWCNT-induced M1 polarization, LTB4 secretion, and migration of neutrophils. Taken together, these findings demonstrate the polarization of M1 macrophages by Mitsui-7 MWCNTs in vitro and that induction of Alox5 is an important mechanism by which the MWCNTs promote proinflammatory responses by boosting M1 polarization and production of proinflammatory LMs.

Functional Nanomaterials Enhancing Electrochemical Biosensors as Smart Tools for Detecting Infectious Viral Diseases

Electrochemical biosensors are known as analytical tools, guaranteeing rapid and on-site results in medical diagnostics, food safety, environmental protection, and life sciences research. Current research focuses on developing sensors for specific targets and addresses challenges to be solved before their commercialization. These challenges typically include the lowering of the limit of detection, the widening of the linear concentration range, the analysis of real samples in a real environment and the comparison with a standard validation method. Nowadays, functional nanomaterials are designed and applied in electrochemical biosensing to support all these challenges. This review will address the integration of functional nanomaterials in the development of electrochemical biosensors for the rapid diagnosis of viral infections, such as COVID-19, middle east respiratory syndrome (MERS), influenza, hepatitis, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and dengue, among others. The role and relevance of the nanomaterial, the type of biosensor, and the electrochemical technique adopted will be discussed. Finally, the critical issues in applying laboratory research to the analysis of real samples, future perspectives, and commercialization aspects of electrochemical biosensors for virus detection will be analyzed.

Production of H2 and CNM from biogas decomposition using biosolids-derived biochar and the application of the CNM-coated biochar for PFAS adsorption

Anaerobic digestion is a popular unit operation in wastewater treatment to degrade organic contaminants, thereby generating biogas (methane-rich gas stream). Catalytic decomposition of the biogas could be a promising upcycling approach to produce renewable hydrogen and sequester carbon in the form of carbon nanomaterials (CNMs). Biosolids are solid waste generated during the wastewater treatment process, which can be valorised to biochar via pyrolysis. This work demonstrates the use of biosolids-derived biochar compared with ilmenite as catalysts for biogas decomposition to hydrogen and CNMs. Depending on the reaction time, biosolids-derived biochar achieved a CH₄ and CO₂ conversion of 50-70 % and 70-90 % at 900 °C with a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 1.2 Lg^-1h^-1. The high conversion rate was attributed to the formation of amorphous carbon on the biochar surface, where the carbon deposits acted as catalysts and substrates for the further decomposition of CH₄ and CO₂. Morphological characterisation of biochar after biogas decomposition revealed the formation of high-quality carbon nanospheres (200-500 nm) and carbon nanofibres (10-100 nm) on its surface. XRD pattern and Raman spectroscopy also signified the presence of graphitic structures with I_D/I_G ratio of 1.19, a reduction from 1.33 in the pristine biochar. Finally, the produced CNM-loaded biochar was tested for PFAS adsorption from contaminated wastewater. A removal efficiency of 79 % was observed for CNM-coated biochar which was 10-60 % higher than using biochar and ilmenite alone. This work demonstrated an integrated approach for upcycling waste streams generated in wastewater treatment facilities.

Comparative study of the efficiency of silicon carbide, boron nitride and carbon nanotube to deliver cancerous drug, azacitidine: A DFT study

Herein we have made a comparative study of the efficiency of three different nanotubes viz. Carbon nanotube (CNT), boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) and silicon carbide nanotube (SiCNT) to deliver the cancerous drug, Azacitidine (AZD). The atomistic description of the encapsulation process of AZD in these nanotubes has been analyzed by evaluating parameters like adsorption energy, electrostatic potential map, reduced density gradient (RDG). Higher adsorption energy of AZD with BNNT (-0.66eV), SiCNT (-0.92eV) compared to CNT (-0.56eV) confirms stronger binding affinity of the drug for the former than the later. Charge density and electrostatic potential map suggest that charge separation involving BNNT and CNT is more prominent than SiCNT. Evaluation of different thermodynamic parameters like Gibbs free energy, enthalpy change revealed that the overall encapsulation process is spontaneous and exothermic in nature and much favorable with BNNT and SiCNT. Stabilizing interactions of the drug with BNNT and SiCNT has been confirmed from RDG analysis. ADMP molecular dynamics simulation supports that the encapsulation process of the drug within the NT at room temperature. These results open up unlimited opportunities for the applications of these NTs as a drug delivery system in the field of nanomedicine.

Sorptive removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances from aqueous solution: Enhanced sorption, challenges and perspectives

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have garnered attention globally given their ubiquitous occurrence, toxicity, bioaccumulative potential, and environmental persistence. Sorption is widely used to remove PFASs given its simplicity and cost-effectiveness. This article reviews recently fabricated sorbents, including carbon materials, minerals, polymers, and composite materials. The characteristics and interactions of the sorbents with PFASs are discussed to better understand sorptive processes. Various sorbents have exhibited high removal rates for legacy perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS). Novel polymers with special design better remove long- and short-chain PFASs than other sorbents. Although hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions mainly drive the sorption of anionic, cationic, and zwitterionic PFASs, enhancing PFAS sorption on designed sorbents has mainly depended on improving electrostatic interactions. Pearson correlation analysis showed that PFOS sorption capacity of sorbents is positively correlated with their specific surface area. Newly discovered pathways, including the air-water interfacial adsorption, F-F fluorophilic interactions, and (hemi) micelle formation, can enhance PFAS sorption to a certain extent. In addition to PFOA and PFOS, the sorption of emerging PFASs, including aqueous film-forming foam-relevant PFASs, constitutes a new research direction. The functionalization methods for enhancing PFAS sorption and challenges of PFAS sorption are also discussed to provide scope for future research. The discussions herein may contribute to developing efficient sorption technologies to remove PFASs.

Nanotechnology as a tool to overcome macromolecules delivery issues

Nanocarriers can deliver drugs to specific organs or cells, potentially bridging the gap between a drug's function and its interaction with biological systems such as human physiology. The untapped potential of nanotechnology stems from its ability to manipulate materials, allowing control over physical and chemical properties and overcoming drug-related problems, e.g., poor solubility or poor bioavailability. For example, most protein drugs are administered parenterally, each with challenges and peculiarities. Some problems faced by bioengineered macromolecule drugs leading to poor bioavailability are short biological half-life, large size and high molecular weight, low permeability through biological membranes, and structural instability. Nanotechnology emerges as a promising strategy to overcome these problems. Nevertheless, the delivery system should be carefully chosen considering loading efficiency, physicochemical properties, production conditions, toxicity, and regulations. Moving from the bench to the bedside is still one of the major bottlenecks in nanomedicine, and toxicological issues are the greatest challenges to overcome. This review provides an overview of biotech drug delivery approaches, associated nanotechnology novelty, toxicological issues, and regulations.

Using Nanomaterials as Excellent Immobilisation Layer for Biosensor Design

The endless development in nanotechnology has introduced new vitality in device fabrication including biosensor design for biomedical applications. With outstanding features like suitable biocompatibility, good electrical and thermal conductivity, wide surface area and catalytic activity, nanomaterials have been considered excellent and promising immobilisation candidates for the development of high-impact biosensors after they emerged. Owing to these reasons, the present review deals with the efficient use of nanomaterials as immobilisation candidates for biosensor fabrication. These include the implementation of carbon nanomaterials-graphene and its derivatives, carbon nanotubes, carbon nanoparticles, carbon nanodots-and MXenes, likewise their synergistic impact when merged with metal oxide nanomaterials. Furthermore, we also discuss the origin of the synthesis of some nanomaterials, the challenges associated with the use of those nanomaterials and the chemistry behind their incorporation with other materials for biosensor design. The last section covers the prospects for the development and application of the highlighted nanomaterials.

Biotechnological advancements towards water, food and medical healthcare: A review

The global health status is highly affected by the growing pace of urbanization, new lifestyles, climate changes, and resource exploitation. Modern technologies pave a promising way to deal with severe concerns toward sustainable development. Herein, we provided a comprehensive review of some popular biotechnological advancements regarding the progress achieved in water, food, and medicine, as the most substantial fields related to public health. The emergence of novel organic/inorganic materials has brought about significant improvement in conventional water treatment techniques, anti-fouling approaches, anti-microbial agents, food processing, biosensors, drug delivery systems, and implants. Particularly, a growing interest has been devoted to nanomaterials and their application for developing novel structures or improving the characteristics of standard components. Also, bioinspired materials have been widely used to improve the performance, efficiency, accuracy, stability, safety, and cost-effectiveness of traditional systems. On the other side, the fabrication of innovative devices for precisely monitoring and managing various ecosystem and human health issues is of great importance. Above all, exceptional advancements in designing ion-selective electrodes (ISEs), microelectromechanical systems (MEMs), and implantable medical devices have altered the future landscape of environmental and biomedical research. This review paper aimed to shed light on the wide-ranging materials and devices that have been developed for health applications and mainly focused on the impact of nanotechnology in this field.

Wetting Properties of Clathrate Hydrates in the Presence of Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds: Evidence of Ion-Specific Effects

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have attracted remarkable multidisciplinary attention due to their intriguing π-π stacking configurations, showing enormous opportunity for their use in a variety of advanced applications. To secure progress, detailed knowledge on PAHs' interfacial properties is required. Employing molecular dynamics, we probe the wetting properties of brine droplets (KCl, NaCl, and CaCl₂) on sII methane-ethane hydrate surfaces immersed in various oil solvents. Our simulations show synergistic effects due to the presence of PAHs compounded by ion-specific effects. Our analysis reveals phenomenological correlations between the wetting properties and a combination of the binding free-energy difference and entropy changes upon oil solvation for PAHs at oil/brine and oil/hydrate interfaces. The detailed thermodynamic analysis conducted upon the interactions between PAHs and various interfaces identifies molecular-level mechanisms responsible for wettability alterations, which could be applicable for advancing applications in optics, microfluidics, biotechnology, medicine, as well as hydrate management.

Engineering carbon nanotubes for sensitive viral detection

Viral infections have been proven a severe threat to human beings, and the pandemic of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a societal health concern, including mental distress and morbidity. Therefore, the early diagnosis and differentiation of viral infections are the prerequisite for curbing the local and global spread of viruses. To this end, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) based virus detection strategies are developed that provide feasible alternatives to conventional diagnostic techniques. Here in this review, an overview of the design and engineering of CNTs-based sensors for virus detection is summarized, followed by the nano-bio interactions used in developing biosensors. Then, we classify the viral sensors into covalently engineered CNTs, non-covalently engineered CNTs, and size-tunable CNTs arrays for viral detection, based on the type of CNTs-based nano-bio interfaces. Finally, the current challenges and prospects of CNTs-based sensors for virus detection are discussed.

Cluster Adsorption of L-Histidine on Carbon Nanotubes in Aqueous Solutions at Different Temperatures

Abstract

Adsorption isotherms are obtained for L-histidine on carbon nanotubes using aqueous solutions at temperatures of 25, 35, 45, 55, 65, and 80°C. The isotherms are interpreted by using the cluster adsorption model and analyzing the dependence of the strength of the bond nanotube–amino acid on temperature. Equations of the adsorption isotherms are obtained for all temperatures. The calculated results indicate that L-histidine is fixed on a nanotube’s surface in the form of monomers and different clusters. The equilibrium characteristics of adsorption are found to change as the temperature rises. Values obtained for the coefficients of equilibrium are used to calculate apparent enthalpy ΔH* of L-histidine adsorption by nanotubes, according to the van’t Hoff equation.

EGFR-Based Targeted Therapy for Colorectal Cancer—Promises and Challenges

Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) is the most lethal and common form of cancer in the world. It was responsible for almost 881,000 cancer deaths in 2018. Approximately 25% of cases are diagnosed at advanced stages with metastasis—this poses challenges for effective surgical control and future tumor-related mortality. There are numerous diagnostic methods that can be used to reduce the risk of colorectal carcinoma. Among these, targeted nanotherapy aims to eliminate the tumor and any metastasis. Active targeting can increase the effectiveness and quantity of drugs delivered to the target site. Antibodies that target overexpressed receptors on cell surfaces and indicators are coupled with drug-loaded carriers. The major target receptors of chemotherapeutic drugs delivery include VEGFR, EGFR, FGFR, HER2, and TGF. On account of its major and diverse roles in cancer, it is important to target EGFR in particular for better tumor selection, as EGFR is overexpressed in 25 to 82% of colorectal carcinoma cases. The EGFR monoclonal immunoglobulins cetuximab/panitumumab can thus be used to treat colorectal cancer. This review examines carriers that contain cetuximab-conjugated therapeutic drugs as well as their efficacy in anticancer activities.

Comparison Between Wedge Resection and Lobectomy/Segmentectomy for Early-Stage Non-small Cell Lung Cancer: A Bayesian Meta-analysis and Systematic Review

BACKGROUND

Surgery has become an accepted method for the treatment of early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The purpose of this Bayesian meta-analysis was to compare the overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), and relapse-free survival (RFS) between wedge resection and lobectomy/segmentectomy for treatment of early-stage NSCLC.

METHODS

Eligible studies were retrieved from Web of Science, PubMed, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, CNKI, and WanFang up to July 2021 and screened based on established selection criteria. The Bayesian meta-analysis was performed with the combination of the reported survival outcomes of the individual studies using a random-effect model. The OS, DFS, and RFS of the wedge resection group was compared with the lobectomy/segmentectomy group. The hazard ratio (HR) and standard error were extracted or calculated for each study using the Kaplan-Meier method.

RESULTS

This study was registered with PROSPERO (INPLASY202080090).The pooled OS hazard ratio between segmentectomy and lobectomy was 1.1 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.92-1.4], the pooled HR between lobectomy and wedge resection was 0.71 [95% CI 0.52-0.96], and the pooled HR between segmentectomy and wedge was 0.80 [95% CI 0.56-1.10]. The pooled HR of DFS or RFS was not statistically significant among the three surgical approaches.

CONCLUSIONS

Patients with early-stage NSCLC received lobectomy had the lowest hazard ratio of OS than patients received wedge resection, indicating that the overall survival of patients received lobectomy was higher than patients received wedge resection. However, regarding DFS and RFS, the three surgical approaches showed no significant difference.

Current Understanding of Water Properties inside Carbon Nanotubes

Confined water inside carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has attracted a lot of attention in recent years, amassing as a result a very large number of dedicated studies, both theoretical and experimental. This exceptional scientific interest can be understood in terms of the exotic properties of nanoconfined water, as well as the vast array of possible applications of CNTs in a wide range of fields stretching from geology to medicine and biology. This review presents an overreaching narrative of the properties of water in CNTs, based mostly on results from systematic nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and molecular dynamics (MD) studies, which together allow the untangling and explanation of many seemingly contradictory results present in the literature. Further, we identify still-debatable issues and open problems, as well as avenues for future studies, both theoretical and experimental.

Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Inhibit TRPC4-Mediated Muscarinic Cation Current in Mouse Ileal Myocytes

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are characterized by a combination of rather unique physical and chemical properties, which makes them interesting biocompatible nanostructured materials for various applications, including in the biomedical field. SWCNTs are not inert carriers of drug molecules, as they may interact with various biological macromolecules, including ion channels. To investigate the mechanisms of the inhibitory effects of SWCNTs on the muscarinic receptor cation current (mI_CAT), induced by intracellular GTPγs (200 μM), in isolated mouse ileal myocytes, we have used the patch-clamp method in the whole-cell configuration. Here, we use molecular docking/molecular dynamics simulations and direct patch-clamp recordings of whole-cell currents to show that SWCNTs, purified and functionalized by carboxylation in water suspension containing single SWCNTs with a diameter of 0.5–1.5 nm, can inhibit mI_CAT, which is mainly carried by TRPC4 cation channels in ileal smooth muscle cells, and is the main regulator of cholinergic excitation–contraction coupling in the small intestinal tract. This inhibition was voltage-independent and associated with a shortening of the mean open time of the channel. These results suggest that SWCNTs cause a direct blockage of the TRPC4 channel and may represent a novel class of TRPC4 modulators.

Pesticide-loaded colloidal nanodelivery systems; preparation, characterization, and applications

The fast developments in pesticide-loaded nanodelivery systems over the last decade have inspired many companies and research organizations to highlight potential applications by employing encapsulation approaches in order to protect the agricultural crops. This approach is being used to retard the indiscriminate application of conventional pesticides, as well as, to make ensure the environmental safety. This article shed light on the potential of colloidal delivery systems, particularly controlled releasing profiles of several pesticides with enhanced stability and improved solubility. Colloidal nanodelivery systems, being efficient nanoformulations, have the ability to boost up the pest-control competence for prolonged intervals thru averting the early degradation of active ingredients under severe ecofriendly circumstances. This work is thus aimed to provide critical information on the meaningful role of nanocarriers for loading of pesticides. The smart art of pesticide-loaded nanocarriers can be more fruitful owing to the use of lower amount of active ingredients with improved efficiency along with minimizing the pesticide loss. Also, the future research gaps regarding nano-pesticide formulations, such as role of nanomaterials as active ingredients are discussed briefly. In addition, this article can deliver valuable information to the readers while establishing novel pesticide-loaded nanocarriers for a wide range of applications in the agriculture sectors.

Carrageenan-based nano-hybrid materials for the mitigation of hazardous environmental pollutants

Fast industrialization and population growth are associated with the increased release of hazardous contaminants in the environment. These hazardous substances, including pharmaceutical, biomedical, personal-care products, heavy metals, endocrine-disrupters, and colorants, pollute the ecosystem by disturbing nature's balance. Nanotechnology has paved new horizons in biochemical engineering by designing novel approaches of integrating nanoscale science with biotechnology to construct improved quality materials for target uptake of pollutants. Recently, nanostructured materials have emerged as research and development frontiers owing to their excellent properties. The tailored designing of nanohybrids constructs with physicochemical alteration enables the nano-bioadsorbent with high target specificity and efficiency. The development of eco-friendly, biodegradable, cost-efficient, and biopolymer-based nanohybrid constructs is gaining attention to remove hazardous environmental pollutants. κ-carrageenan biopolymer is frequently used with different nanomaterials to design nanohybrid bio-adsorbents to remove various contaminants. Herein, the potentialities of carrageenan-based nanohybrid constructs in environmental remediation have been summarized. Different nanostructures, e.g., silica, non-magnetic/magnetic, carbon nanotubes/nanorods, nanoclay/nanomembrane, metal organic frameworks, graphene oxide, and other nanomaterials have been described in combination with carrageenan biopolymers focusing on environmental remediation.

Rylene- and diaza-rylene-derived cobalt clusters for solid-state pyrolysis towards undoped and N-doped carbon nanoparticles

2,7-Diazapyrene and 2,9-diazaperopyrene tetraalkynes (12 and 13) as well as related non-N-doped pyrene and peropyrene tetraalkynes (14 and 15) of the same shape were used as polyaromatic templates in their metalation by [Co₂(CO)₈]. Isolated cobalt-rich [(12, 13, 14, 15)Co₈(CO)₂₄] clusters were characterized by means of NMR, IR, UV-Vis spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. Their thermogravimetric behaviour and products of solid-state pyrolysis (SSP) were investigated by TGA, DSC, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Despite the same precursor shape, different carbon nanoparticles and nanotubes were formed depending on the extension of the π-system and nitrogen content of the precursors. Diazapyrene and diazaperopyrene complexes formed cauliflower-shaped nanoparticles, and the pyrene complex formed spherical nanoparticles and the peropyrene complex led to multi-walled carbon nanotubes. These results elucidate that the carbon to cobalt ratio and the nitrogen dopant in the precursor have a significant impact on the products of the pyrolysis reaction.

Vesicle Impact Electrochemical Cytometry to Determine Carbon Nanotube-Induced Fusion of Intracellular Vesicles

Carbon nanotube (CNT)-modified electrodes are used to obtain new measurements of vesicle content via amperometry. We have investigated the interaction between CNTs and isolated adrenal chromaffin vesicles (as a model) by vesicle impact electrochemical cytometry. Our data show that the presence of CNTs not only significantly increased the vesicular catecholamine number from 2,250,000 ± 112,766 molecules on a bare electrode to 3,880,000 ± 686,573 molecules on CNT/carbon fiber electrodes but also caused an enhancement in the maximum intensity of the current, which implies the existence of strong interactions between vesicle biolayers and CNTs and an altered electroporation process. We suggest that CNTs might perturb and destabilize the membrane structure of intracellular vesicles and cause the aggregation or fusion of vesicles into new vesicles with larger size and higher content. Our findings are consistent with previous computational and experimental results and support the hypothesis that CNTs as a mediator can rearrange the phospholipid bilayer membrane and trigger homotypic fusion of intracellular vesicles.

Effects of food matrix and probiotics on the bioavailability of curcumin in different nanoformulations

BACKGROUND

Nanoparticles can improve the bioavailability of bioactive compounds. Concomitant intake of food can affect pharmacokinetic profiles by altering dissolution, absorption, metabolism, and elimination behavior. Studies on the effects of food and its supplements on the bioavailability of bioactives in nanoformulations are few. In this study, the effects of typical food (milk, sugar, high-fat diet, and regular kibble) and a widely consumed probiotic [Bifidobacterium lactis Bb-12® (Bb-12)] on the bioavailability of curcumin in four formulations [simply suspended curcumin (Cur-SS) and curcumin in nanoemulsions (Cur-NEs), in single-walled carbon nanotubes (Cur-SWNTs), and in nanostructured lipid carriers (Cur-NLCs)] were investigated.

RESULTS

Fasting treatment and sugar co-ingestion can significantly enhance the bioavailability of curcumin in Cur-NEs and Cur-SWNTs, respectively. Compared with the fasting treatment, co-ingestion with regular kibble reduced the absorption of curcumin in Cur-NEs and Cur-SWNTs. Ingesting milk along with Cur-NE is also not recommended. The mechanisms behind these phenomena were briefly discussed. This study revealed for the first time that the intestinal colonization of Bb-12 reduces the bioavailability of curcumin and this reduction can be attenuated by nanoformulations SWNTs and NLCs, but not NEs. The reason for this difference was the protective effects of the former two nanoformulations against curcumin degradation by Bb-12 according to in vitro experiments.

CONCLUSION

Dietary status (including supplementary probiotics) can dramatically influence the bioavailability of curcumin in nanoformulations. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Carbon nanotubes as an emerging nanocarrier for the delivery of doxorubicin for improved chemotherapy

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), a versatile nanocarrier for doxorubicin (DOX) delivery had attracted significant attention in drug delivery of pharmaceuticals. Several properties such as high surface area, high drug loading capacity, stability, ease of functionalization, ultrahigh length to diameter ratio and good cellular uptake make them preferred nanocarrier as multipurpose drug delivery system. Several surface properties of CNTs can be easily modified by covalent/noncovalent functionalization, which can make CNTs a profound nanomaterial. Hydrophobic surface of CNTs facilitated π-π stacking interactions, with several drugs and therapeutic agents having aromatic ring in their structure, for example anthracyclines. In case some drug molecules, electrostatic interaction between drug and CNTs comes into the picture. DOX, an anthracycline anticancer drug, can easily adsorb on the surface of CNTs by π-π stacking interactions. In present article, we have reviewed various CNTs based drug delivery systems for the delivery of DOX alone or in combination with genetic materials and other drug molecules. In addition, we described recent updates in CNTs based drug delivery system for the delivery of DOX, we covered adsorption and desorption, different types of functionalization, to alter the properties of CNTs in vitro and in vivo. CNT attached many targeting ligands for the targeted delivery of DOX have also been discussed.

Electrocatalytic Isoxazoline-Nanocarbon Metal Complexes

We report the synthesis of new carbon-nanomaterial-based metal chelates that enable effective electronic coupling to electrocatalytic transition metals. In particular, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and few-layered graphene (FLG) were covalently functionalized by a microwave-assisted cycloaddition with nitrile oxides to form metal-binding isoxazoline functional groups with high densities. The covalent attachment was evidenced by Raman spectroscopy, and the chemical identity of the surface functional groups was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). The functional carbon nanomaterials effectively chelate precious metals Ir(III), Pt(II), and Ru(III), as well as earth-abundant metals such as Ni(II), to afford materials with metal contents as high as 3.0 atom %. The molecularly dispersed nature of the catalysts was confirmed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (STEM-EDS) elemental mapping. The interplay between the chelate structure on the graphene surface and its metal binding ability has also been investigated by a combination of experimental and computational studies. The defined ligands on the graphene surfaces enable the formation of structurally precise heterogeneous molecular catalysts. The direct attachment of the isoxazoline functional group on the graphene surfaces provides strong electronic coupling between the chelated metal species and the conductive carbon nanomaterial support. We demonstrate that the metal-chelated carbon nanomaterials are effective heterogeneous catalysts in the oxygen evolution reaction with low overpotentials and tunable catalytic activity.

Stimuli-Responsive Polymeric Nanoplatforms for Cancer Therapy

Polymeric nanoparticles have been widely used as carriers of drugs and bioimaging agents due to their excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, and structural versatility. The principal application of polymeric nanoparticles in medicine is for cancer therapy, with increased tumor accumulation, precision delivery of anticancer drugs to target sites, higher solubility of pharmaceutical properties and lower systemic toxicity. Recently, the stimuli-responsive polymeric nanoplatforms attracted more and more attention because they can change their physicochemical properties responding to the stimuli conditions, such as low pH, enzyme, redox agents, hypoxia, light, temperature, magnetic field, ultrasound, and so on. Moreover, the unique properties of stimuli-responsive polymeric nanocarriers in target tissues may significantly improve the bioactivity of delivered agents for cancer treatment. This review introduces stimuli-responsive polymeric nanoparticles and their applications in tumor theranostics with the loading of chemical drugs, nucleic drugs and imaging molecules. In addition, we discuss the strategy for designing multifunctional polymeric nanocarriers and provide the perspective for the clinical applications of these stimuli-responsive polymeric nanoplatforms.

Triblock Copolymer Bioinks in Hydrogel Three-Dimensional Printing for Regenerative Medicine: A Focus on Pluronic F127

Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting is a novel technique applied to manufacture semisolid or solid objects via deposition of successive thin layers. The widespread implementation of the 3D bioprinting technology encouraged scientists to evaluate its feasibility for applications in human regenerative medicine. 3D bioprinting gained much interest as a new strategy to prepare implantable 3D tissues or organs, tissue and organ evaluation models to test drugs, and cell/material interaction systems. The present work summarizes recent and relevant progress based on the use of hydrogels for the technology of 3D bioprinting and their emerging biomedical applications. An overview of different 3D printing techniques in addition to the nature and properties of bioinks used will be described with a focus on hydrogels as suitable bioinks for 3D printing. A comprehensive overview of triblock copolymers with emphasis on Pluronic F127 (PF127) as a bioink in 3D printing for regenerative medicine will be provided. Several biomedical applications of PF127 in tissue engineering, particularly in bone and cartilage regeneration and in vascular reconstruction, will be also discussed.

Nanowire-Enabled Bioelectronics

Bioelectronics explores the use of electronic devices for applications in signal transduction at their interfaces with biological systems. The miniaturization of the bioelectronic systems has enabled seamless integration at these interfaces and is providing new scientific and technological opportunities. In particular, nanowire-based devices can yield smaller sized and unique geometry detectors that are difficult to access with standard techniques, and thereby can provide advantages in sensitivity with reduced invasiveness. In this review, we focus on nanowire-enabled bioelectronics. First, we provide an overview of synthetic studies for designed growth of semiconductor nanowires of which structure and composition are controlled to enable key elements for bioelectronic devices. Second, we review nanowire field-effect transistor sensors for highly sensitive detection of biomolecules, their applications in diagnosis and drug discovery, and methods for sensitivity enhancement. We then turn to recent progress in nanowire-enabled studies of electrogenic cells, including cardiomyocytes and neurons. Representative advances in electrical recording using nanowire electronic devices for single cell measurements, cell network mapping, and three-dimensional recordings of synthetic and natural tissues, and in vivo brain mapping are highlighted. Finally, we overview the key challenges and opportunities of nanowires for fundamental research and translational applications.

Mechanical Behavior of Bi-Layer and Dispersion Coatings Composed of Several Nanostructures on Ti13Nb13Zr Alloy

Titanium implants are commonly used because of several advantages, but their surface modification is necessary to enhance bioactivity. Recently, their surface coatings were developed to induce local antibacterial properties. The aim of this research was to investigate and compare mechanical properties of three coatings: multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), bi-layer composed of an inner MWCNTs layer and an outer TiO₂ layer, and dispersion coatings comprised of simultaneously deposited MWCNTs and nanoCu, each electrophoretically deposited on the Ti13Nb13Zr alloy. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray electron diffraction spectroscopy, and nanoindentation technique were applied to study topography, chemical composition, hardness, plastic and elastic properties. The results demonstrate that the addition of nanocopper or titanium dioxide to MWCNTs coating increases hardness, lowers Young’s modulus, improves plastic and elastic properties, wear resistance under deflection, and plastic deformation resistance. The results can be attributed to different properties, structure and geometry of applied particles, various deposition techniques, and the possible appearance of porous structures. These innovative coatings of simultaneously high strength and elasticity are promising to apply for deposition on long-term titanium implants.

Integrating the Essence of a Metal-Organic Framework with Electrospinning: A New Approach for Making a Metal Nanoparticle Confined N-Doped Carbon Nanotubes/Porous Carbon Nanofibrous Membrane for Energy Storage and Conversion

The fabrication of an economic and efficient multifunctional advanced nanomaterial with a rational composition and configuration by a facile methodology is a crucial challenge. Herein, we are the first to report the growth of Co nanoparticle-integrated nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) on porous carbon nanofibers by simply heating in the situ-developed metal-organic framework (MOF)-based electrospun nanofibrous membrane with no need for an external supply of any additional precursors and reducing gases. The long and entangled N-CNTs originating from highly porous and graphitic carbon nanofibers offer good flexibility, large surface area, high porosity, high conductivity, the homogeneous incorporation of heteroatoms and metallic constituents, and an abundant exposure of active nanocatalytic sites. The as-developed nanoassembly demonstrates attractive characteristics for electrocatalytic hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions and electrochemical energy storage. This strategy of integrating the essence of an MOF with electrospinning offers a new, direct, and cost-effective approach for making N-doped CNT-based multifunctional membranes.

Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) for Water and Wastewater Treatment: Preparation to Application

As the world human population and industrialization keep growing, the water availability issue has forced scientists, engineers, and legislators of water supply industries to better manage water resources. Pollutant removals from wastewaters are crucial to ensure qualities of available water resources (including natural water bodies or reclaimed waters). Diverse techniques have been developed to deal with water quality concerns. Carbon based nanomaterials, especially carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with their high specific surface area and associated adsorption sites, have drawn a special focus in environmental applications, especially water and wastewater treatment. This critical review summarizes recent developments and adsorption behaviors of CNTs used to remove organics or heavy metal ions from contaminated waters via adsorption and inactivation of biological species associated with CNTs. Foci include CNTs synthesis, purification, and surface modifications or functionalization, followed by their characterization methods and the effect of water chemistry on adsorption capacities and removal mechanisms. Functionalized CNTs have been proven to be promising nanomaterials for the decontamination of waters due to their high adsorption capacity. However, most of the functional CNT applications are limited to lab-scale experiments only. Feasibility of their large-scale/industrial applications with cost-effective ways of synthesis and assessments of their toxicity with better simulating adsorption mechanisms still need to be studied.
