Design and preparation of a multi-responsive Cd-based fluorescent coordination polymer for smart sensing of nitrobenzene and ornidazole

The improper utilization of nitrobenzene (NB) and ornidazole (ORN) has resulted in irreversible effects on the environment. By combining experimental investigation, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and machine learning, an effective green strategy for detecting NB and ORN in aqueous solutions can be developed. In this study, a one-dimensional Cd-based coordination polymer (Cd-HCIA-3) was designed and synthesized using 5-((4-carboxybenzyl)oxy)isophthalic acid and rigid 2,2'-bipyridine under solvothermal reaction conditions. Cd-HCIA-3 exhibits excellent fluorescence properties and stability in aqueous solutions. DFT calculations were performed to predict the fluorescence sensing performance of Cd-HCIA-3, revealing that photoinduced electron transfer is the key mechanism for inducing fluorescence quenching in the presence of NB and ORN, with weak molecular interactions promoting electron transfer. Fluorescence sensing experiments were conducted to verify the DFT results, showing that Cd-HCIA-3 can selectively detect NB and ORN in aqueous solutions with limits of detection of 7.22 × 10-8 and 1.31 × 10-7 mol/L, respectively. This study's findings provide valuable insights into the design and synthesis of fluorescent coordination polymers for target analytes.

Utilizing excited-state proton transfer fluorescence quenching mechanism, layered rare earth hydroxides enable ultra-sensitive detection of nitroaromatic

Convenient, rapid, and accurate detection of nitroaromatic organic toxins and harmful substances is of great significance in research. In the present study, two-dimensional layered rare-earth hydroxides (LYH) were used as ion-exchange matrix materials, and the anionic fluorescent dye molecules (HPTS) were successfully introduced into the LYH structures in situ via a simple and effective "plug-and-play" strategy, which gave the compounds ultra-sensitive fluorescence sensing detection of nitrobenzene, p-nitrotoluene and p-nitrophenol (Fluorescence response time < 1 sec, and the LOD for nitrobenzene, p-nitrophenol and p-nitrotoluene reached an impressive 349 ppb, 22 ppb and 98 ppb, respectively). Combined with theoretical calculations, we elucidated in detail the fluorescence quenching response mechanism of the LYH-HPTS towards nitroaromatic. Additionally, we also constructed fluorescent paper sensor, which effectively transformed the LYH-HPTS from theoretical detection to device application. The LYH-HPTS material is not only simple to synthesize, cost-effective and stable, but also has the features of fast response, excellent sensitivity and selectivity, and good reproducibility, which provides a new approach for the rapid and accurate detection of nitroaromatic.

Fabrication of a two-dimensional bi-lanthanide metal-organic framework as a ratiometric fluorescent sensor based on energy competition

Bimetallic lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (bi-Ln-MOFs) exhibit great appeal for ratiometric luminescent sensors due to their unique advantages. Specially, the low-lying energy of the empty 4f band of Ce4+ ions benefits Ce-MOFs with robust and broad fluorescent emission. Therefore, constructing ratiometric sensors based on Ce-MOFs is of significance but remains a challenge. Here, a two-dimensional (2D) bi-Ln-MOF is fabricated using Eu3+/Ce4+ and 5-boronoisophthalic acid (5-bop) via a crystal phase transformation strategy to construct a ratiometric luminescent Hg2+ sensor. Due to the lower energy gap of Ce4+ compared to Eu3+ and the corresponding stronger energy-absorption ability, the Ce4+ in bi-Ln-MOF shows a stronger and broader fluorescent emission than that of Eu3+. The substitution of the boric acid group in the bi-Ln-MOF by Hg2+ amplifies the difference between the two lanthanide ions. Therefore, the fluorescence intensity of Ce4+ increases whereas that of Eu3+ decreases accordingly, a behavior distinct from individual Eu-MOF or Ce-MOF performance. This novel bi-Ln-MOF sensor not only achieves a wide linear response range from 0.5 to 120 μM with a low detection limit of 167 nM for Hg2+, but also demonstrates exceptional selectivity and stability. The intriguing sensing mechanism of energy competition and the novel synthesis approach for 2D bi-Ln-MOF are anticipated to broaden the application possibilities of bi-Ln-MOFs for designing ratiometric sensors.

Recent advances on nanomaterial-based glutathione sensors

Glutathione (GSH) is one of the most common thiol-containing molecules discovered in biological systems, and it plays an important role in many cellular functions, where changes in physiological glutathione levels contribute to the progress of a variety of diseases. Molecular imaging employing fluorescent probes is thought to be a sensitive technique for online fluorescence detection of GSH. Although various molecular probes for (intracellular) GSH sensing have been reported, some aspects remain unanswered, such as quantitative intracellular analysis, dynamic monitoring, and compatibility with biological environment. Some of these drawbacks can be overcome by sensors based on nanostructured materials, that have attracted considerable attention owing to their exceptional properties, including a large surface area, heightened electro-catalytic activity, and robust mechanical resilience, for which they have become integral components in the development of highly sensitive chemo- and biosensors. Additionally, engineered nanomaterials have demonstrated significant promise in enhancing the precision of disease diagnosis and refining treatment specificity. The aim of this review is to investigate recent advancements in fabricated nanomaterials tailored for detecting GSH. Specifically, it examines various material categories, encompassing carbon, polymeric, quantum dots (QDs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), metal-based, and silicon-based nanomaterials, applied in the fabrication of chemo- and biosensors. The fabrication of nano-biosensors, mechanisms, and methodologies employed for GSH detection utilizing these fabricated nanomaterials will also be elucidated. Remarkably, there is a noticeable absence of existing reviews specifically dedicated to the nanomaterials for GSH detection since they are not comprehensive in the case of nano-fabrication, mechanisms and methodologies of detection, as well as applications in various biological environments. This research gap presents an opportune moment to thoroughly assess the potential of nanomaterial-based approaches in advancing GSH detection methodologies.

Confining Thiolysis of Dinitrophenyl Ether to a Luminescent Metal-Organic Framework with a Large Stokes Shift for Highly Efficient Detection of Hydrogen Sulfide in Rat Brain

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a gaseous signaling molecule that regulates various physiological and pathological processes in the central nervous system. It is vital to develop an effective method to detect H2S in vivo to elucidate its critical role. However, current fluorescent probes for accurate quantification of H2S still face big challenges due to complicated fabrication, small Stokes shift, unsatisfactory selectivity, and especially delayed response time. Herein, based on simple postsynthetic modification, we present an innovative strategy by confining H2S-triggered thiolysis of dinitrophenyl (DNP) ether within a luminescent metal-organic framework (MOF) to address those issues. Due to the cleavage of the DNP moiety by H2S, the nanoprobe gives rise to a remarkable fluorescence turn-on signal with a large Stokes shift of 190 nm and also provides high selectivity to H2S against various interferents including competing biothiols. In particular, by virtue of the unique structural property of the MOF, it exhibits an ultrafast sensing ability for H2S (only 5 s). Moreover, the fluorescence enhancement efficiency displays a good linear correlation with H2S concentration in the range of 0-160 μM with a detection limit of 0.29 μM. Importantly, these superior sensing performances enable the nanoprobe to measure the basal value and monitor the change of H2S level in the rat brain.

Nanoarchitectonics of Methyl and Aldehyde Group-Decorated SOD-Type Metal-Azolate Framework for SF6 Capture and Recovery

Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is widely used as an insulating gas, being an etchant and contrast agent in the electrical, semiconductor, and medical industries. However, due to its long lifetime and high global warming potential in the atmosphere, SF6 must be carefully handled to prevent leakage during production and usage. Herein, we report a sod-net metal-azolate framework (MAF) named MAF-stu-111, which decorates methyl and aldehyde groups in the porous windows, showing high adsorption affinity for SF6 at low pressure. Stability tests, gas adsorption, and breakthrough experiments demonstrated that MAF-stu-111 possesses excellent water and chemical stability, fully reversible SF6 uptake, high SF6/N2 separation selectivity (10:90, 285.2), good reusability, and high SF6 recovery purity (99.03%). Theoretical calculations revealed that hydrogen atoms of methyl and aldehyde groups can form multiple hydrogen bonds with SF6 molecules, which ensure that SF6 molecules are firmly held within the MAF-stu-111 framework, playing a key role in the selective separation of SF6/N2.

MXenes for Wearable Physical Sensors toward Smart Healthcare

The gradual rise of personal healthcare awareness is accelerating the deployment of wearable sensors, whose ability of acquiring physiological vital signs depends on sensing materials. MXenes have distinct chemical and physical superiorities over other 2D nanomaterials for wearable sensors. This review presents a comprehensive summary of the latest advancements in MXenes-based materials for wearable physical sensors. It begins with an introduction to special structural features of MXenes for sensing performance, followed by an in-depth exploration of versatile functionalities. A detailed description of different sensing mechanisms is also included to illustrate the contribution of MXenes to the sensing performance and its improvement. In addition, the real-world applications of MXenes-based physical sensors for monitoring different physiological signs are included as well. The remaining challenges of MXenes-based materials for wearable physical sensors and their promising opportunities are finally narrated, in conjunction with a prospective for future development.

Recent advances in photonic crystal-based chemical sensors

The increasing attention towards environmental quality, food safety, public security and medical diagnosis demands high requirements and standards for chemical sensors with merits of rapid response, high precision, long-term stability and reusability. In this case, a prominent innovation in sensory materials holds potential to realize new generations of chemical sensor technologies. Specifically, photonic crystals (PCs) as structured dielectric materials with spatially periodic ordered arrangements offer unique advantages in improving the sensing performance of chemical sensors. Consequently, the promising properties of PCs promote research on their implementation as an integral part of chemical sensors. This review highlights the integration of PCs into chemical sensors including a range of building blocks for the construction of PCs with versatile opal or opal inverse structural architectures and a delicate choice of surface functionality with associated sensing interfaces for target recognition and signal transduction. Subsequently, based on their synthesis and functionality, we focus on introducing the sensing principles of recent advances in PC-based chemical sensors, such as reflection spectra-based sensing, visual colorimetric sensing, fluorescence sensing, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-based sensing and other integrated sensing. Finally, the future prospects and challenges are discussed for the further improvement of PC-based chemical sensors.

CuO-ZIF-8 modified electrode surface as a new electrochemical sensing platform for detection of free chlorine in aqueous solution

This work has applied metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with high adsorbability and catalytic activity to develop electrochemical sensors to determine free chlorine (free-Cl) concentrations in aqueous media. A zeolitic imidazolate frameworks, Zn(Hmim)2 (ZIF-8) has been synthesized and incorporated with CuO nanosheets to decorate a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and provide a new sensor for free-Cl determination. The as-prepared ZIF-8 and CuO-ZIF-8 composites have been characterized by FESEM, EDX, XRD, and FT-IR analyses. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) utilized to characterize the CuO-ZIF-8/GC modified electrode electrochemically, demonstrated the ability of the sensor to measure free-Cl concentration. Using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and under the optimal conditions, the prepared CuO-ZIF-8/GC modified electrode showed a linear response in the 0.25-60 ppm range with a 12 ppb detection limit (LOD) for free-Cl concentration. Finally, the fabricated sensor was applied to analyze free-Cl from actual swimming pool water samples with promising 97.5 to 103.0% recoveries.

Three coordination polymers based on 4,4'-bis(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)diphenyl ether: Synthesis, structure and selective fluorescent sensing properties

Three CPs [Zn2(PDA)2(BMIOPE)2·3H2O]n (1), [Co(Br-BDC)(BMIOPE)]n (2) and [Co(MIP)(BMIOPE)]n (3) were synthesized by solvothermal method based on dual-ligand strategy (H2PDA, Br-H2BDC, BMIOPE and H2MIP are 1,3-phenylenediacetic acid, 5-bromo-isophthalic acid, 4,4'-bis(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)diphenyl ether and 5-methylisophthalic acid, respectively). Complexes 1 and 3 exhibit twofold parallel interwoven sql nets. Complex 2 is 2D layer structure. The luminescence property investigations showed that complexes 1-3 could act as multi-responsive fluorescent sensors to detect UO22+, Cr2O72- and CrO42- and nitrofurantoin (NFT) through fluorescence turn-off process, presenting excellent sensitivity and selectivity. Finally, the possible fluorescent quenching mechanisms of complexes 1-3 toward the above pollutants are also further investigated by employing spectroscopic methods and quantum chemical calculations. The fluorescence lifetime measurements manifest the mechanism of fluorescence quenching is static quenching process.

Recent Trends and Advances in Porous Metal-Organic Framework Nanostructures for the Electrochemical and Optical Sensing of Heavy Metals in Water

With the expansion and advancement in agricultural and chemical industries, various toxic heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury, zinc, copper, arsenic etc. are continuously released into the environment. Intake of sources contaminated with such toxic metals leads to various health issues. Keeping the serious effects of these toxic metal ions in view, various organic-inorganic nanomaterials based sensors have been exploited for their detection via optical, electrochemical and colorimetric approaches. Since a chemical sensor works on the principle of interaction between the sensing layer and the analytes, a sensor material with large surface area is required to enable the largest possible interaction with the target molecules and hence the sensitivity of the chemical sensor. However, commonly employed materials such as metal oxides and conducting polymers tend to feature relatively low surface areas, and hence resulting in low sensitivity of the sensor. Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) nanostructures are another category of organic-inorganic materials endowed with large surface area, ultra-high and tunable porosity, post-synthesis modification features, readily available active sites, catalytic activity, and chemical/thermal stability. These properties provide high sensitivity to the MOF based sensors due to the adsorption of large number of target analytes. The current review article focuses on MOFs based optical and electrochemical sensors for the detection of heavy metals.

Fluorescent Sensors for Tetracycline Detection in Aqueous Medium: A Mini-Review

Tetracycline (TC) is a commonly used antibiotic in human therapy and animal husbandry. Public concerns about TC residues inflated due to their negative impact on the environment, food, and human health concerns. To ensure human health and safety, there is a need for fluorogenic chemosensors that can easily detect TC antibiotics with high selectivity and sensitivity in the aqueous medium. This mini-review discusses the progress and achievements in several fluorometric antibiotic tetracycline detection methods. Fluorogenic chemosensors for tetracycline antibiotics with easy-to-use, high selectivity, and sensitivity have been essentially required to regulate food safety and secure human health and safety. Moreover, we gave more attention to the practical applicability of chemosensors for tetracycline antibiotics in food and water quality assessment. This article starts with a section that constitutes an overview of the problems of antibiotics and the typical features of traditional techniques of antibiotic detection. It then goes on to describe up-to-date optical methods for the selective detection and efficient removal of TC. These methods involve a variety of platforms, like tetraphenylethylene polymers, metal complexes, self-assembled CuNCs, and hydrogel. The article also discusses the practical applicability of chemosensors for tetracycline antibiotics in food and water quality.

Emissive supramolecular ionic crystals combining a red-NIR phosphorescent [Re6Se8CN6]4- cluster anion and a blue fluorescent tetraphenylethene counter-cation

A blue fluorescent tetraphenylethylene-based dication and a red-NIR phosphorescent rhenium octahedral cluster tetra-anion are associated electrostatically to generate a supramolecular ionic framework which crystallizes in the P1̄ centric space group. The emission properties of the hybrids are studied in the crystalline state and in solution revealing a resonant energy transfer and a high sensitivity toward oxygen.

A Series of Lanthanide Coordination Polymers as Luminescent Sensors for Selective Detection of Inorganic Ions and Nitrobenzene

Seven new lanthanide coordination polymers, namely [Ln(cpt)3H2O)]n(Ln = La (1), Pr (2), Sm (3), Eu (4), Gd (5), Dy (6), and Er (7)), which were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions using 4'-(4-(4-carboxyphenyloxy)phenyl)-4,2':6',4'-tripyridine (Hcpt) as the ligand. The crystal structures of these seven complexes were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and they were found to be isostructural, crystallizing in the triclinic P1- space group. The Ln(III) ions were nine-coordinated with tricapped trigonal prism coordination geometry. The Ln(III) cations were coordinated by carboxylic and pyridine groups from (cpt)- ligands, forming one-dimensional ring-chain structures. Furthermore, the luminescent properties of complexes 1-7 were investigated using fluorescent spectra in the solid state. The fluorescence sensing experiments demonstrated that complex 4 exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity for detecting Co2+, Cu2+ ions, and nitrobenzene. Moreover, complex 3 shows good capability for detecting Cu2+ ions and nitrobenzene. Additionally, the sensing mechanism was also thoroughly examined through theoretical calculations.

Nanoscale Metal-Organic Frameworks as a Photoluminescent Platform for Bioimaging and Biosensing Applications

The tracking of nanomedicines in their concentration and location inside living systems has a pivotal effect on the understanding of the biological processes, early-stage diagnosis, and therapeutic monitoring of diseases. Nanoscale metal-organic frameworks (nano MOFs) possess high surface areas, definite structure, regulated optical properties, rich functionalized sites, and good biocompatibility that allow them to excel in a wide range of biomedical applications. Controllable syntheses and functionalization endow nano MOFs with better properties as imaging agents and sensing units for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. This minireview summarizes the tunable synthesis strategies of nano MOFs with controllable size, shape, and regulated luminescent performance, and pinpoints their recent advanced applications as optical elements in bioimaging and biosensing. The current limitations and future development directions of nano MOF-contained materials in bioimaging and biosensing applications are also discussed, aiming to expand the biological applications of nano MOF-based nanomedicine and facilitate their production or clinical translation.

Avoiding the Kinetic Inertness of Chromium Ions Using a Coordination Substitution Strategy for the Rapid Synthesis of Chromium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

Chromium-based metal-organic frameworks (Cr-MOFs) are very attractive in a wide range of applications due to their robustness and high porosity. However, the kinetic inertness of chromium ions results in the synthesis of Cr-MOFs often taking prolonged reaction times, which limit their industrial applications. Herein, we report a novel synthesis strategy based on coordination substitution, which overcomes the kinetic inertness of chromium ions and can synthesize Cr-MOFs in a shorter time. The versatility of this strategy has been demonstrated by producing several known Cr-MOFs, such as TYUT-96Cr, MIL-100Cr, MIL-101Cr, and MIL-53Cr. PXRD, SEM, TEM, 77 K N2 adsorption, and TGA have proved that the Cr-MOFs synthesized using this new strategy have good crystallinity, high porosity, and excellent thermal stability. The synthesis mechanism was investigated using theoretical calculations.

Direct Optical Patterning of Metal-Organic Frameworks via Photoacid-Induced Etching

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous materials constructed from organic linkers and inorganic building blocks. Coordinative competition labilizes some MOFs under harsh chemical conditions because of their weak bonding. However, instability is not always a negative property of a material. In this study, we demonstrated the use of the acidic lability of MOFs for direct optical patterning. The controllable acid release from the photoacid generator at the exposed area causes bond cleavage between the linkers and metal ions/clusters, leading to solubility changes and pattern formation after development. This process avoids redundant steps and possible contamination in traditional photolithography, while maintaining the original properties of patterned MOFs. The preserved porosity and crystallinity promoted the development of MOFs for gas sensors and solid displays.

Immobilization of europium and terbium ions with tunable ratios on a dispersible two-dimensional metal-organic framework for ratiometric photoluminescence detection of D2O

A two-dimensional zirconium-based metal-organic framework (2D Zr-MOF), ZrBTB (BTB = 1,3,5-tri(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene), is used as a platform to simultaneously immobilize terbium ions and europium ions with tunable ratios on its hexa-zirconium nodes by a post-synthetic modification. The crystallinity, morphology, porosity and photoluminescence (PL) properties of the obtained 2D Zr-MOFs with various europium-to-terbium ratios are investigated. With the energy transfer from the excited BTB linker to the installed terbium ions and the energy transfer from terbium ions to europium ions, a low loading of immobilized europium ions and a high loading of surrounding terbium ions in the 2D Zr-MOF result in the optimal PL emission intensities of europium; this phenomenon is not observable for the physical mixture of both terbium-installed ZrBTB and europium-installed ZrBTB. The role of installed terbium ions as efficient mediators for the energy transfer from the excited BTB linker to the installed europium ion is confirmed by quantifying PL quantum yields. As a demonstration, these materials with modulable PL characteristics are applied for the ratiometric detection of D2O in water, with the use of the stable emission from the BTB linker as the reference. With the strong emission of immobilized europium ions and the good dispersity in aqueous solutions, the optimal bimetal-installed ZrBTB, Eu-Tb-ZrBTB(1 : 10), can achieve the sensing performance outperforming those of the terbium-installed ZrBTB, europium-installed ZrBTB and the physical mixture of both.

Determining Structures of Layer-by-Layer Spin-Coated Zinc Dicarboxylate-Based Metal-Organic Thin Films

Thin films of crystalline solids with substantial free volume built from organic chromophores and metal secondary building units (SBUs) are promising for engineering new optoelectronic properties through control of interchromophore coupling. Zn-based SBUs are especially relevant in this case because they avoid quenching the chromophore's luminescence. We find that layer-by-layer spin-coating using Zn acetate dihydrate and benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid (H2BDC) and biphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid (H2BPDC) linkers readily produces crystalline thin films. However, analysis of the grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) data reveals the structures of these films vary significantly with the linker, and with the metal-to-linker molar ratio used for fabrication. Under equimolar conditions, H2BPDC creates a type of structure like that proposed for SURMOF-2, whereas H2BDC generates a different metal-hydroxide-organic framework. Large excess of Zn2+ ions causes the growth of layered zinc hydroxides, irrespective of the linker used. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations provide structural models with minimum total energy that are consistent with the experimentally observed diffractograms. In the broader sense, this work illustrates the importance in this field of careful structure determination, e. g., by utilizing GIWAXS and DFT simulations to determine the structure of the obtained crystalline metal-organic thin films, such that properties can be rationally engineered and explained.

Efficient Turn-On Zr Based Metal Organic Framework Fluorescent Sensor for Ultrafast Detection of Danofloxacin in Milk Samples

Metal organic framework, UiO-67 was synthesized by coordinating Zr(IV) with 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid (BPDC) ligand. Morphology and crystallinity of MOF was confirmed with FE-SEM and PXRD procedure. Danofloxacin (DANO), a veterinary fluoroquinolone antibiotic, was detected in milk by employing UiO-67 as "turn-on" fluorescent sensor. Original photoluminescent (PL) efficiency of UiO-67 sensor was enhanced on its electronic interaction with DANO molecule. Significant PL efficiency enhancement, lower detection limit 0.49 ng/mL (1.37 nM), swift detection (time < 1 min), and excellent linear correlation (R2 = 0.9988) indicated extraordinary sensitivity of developed UiO-67 sensor for DANO. Selectivity and performance of sensor was unaltered in presence of interfering species and detection results were obtained under permissible variation limits. Method applied successfully for ultra-trace detection of DANO residues in milk samples.

Metal organic framework-based variable-size nanoparticles for tumor microenvironment-responsive drug delivery

Nanoparticles (NPs) have been designed for the treatment of tumors increasingly. However, the drawbacks of single-size NPs are still worth noting, as their circulation and metabolism in the blood are negatively correlated with their accumulation at the tumor site. If the size of single-size NPs is too small, it will be quickly cleared in the blood circulation, while, the size is too large, the distribution of NPs in the tumor site will be reduced, and the widespread distribution of NPs throughout the body will cause systemic toxicity. Therefore, a class of variable-size NPs with metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as the main carrier, and size conversion in compliance with the characteristics of the tumor microenvironment (TME), was designed. MOF-based variable-size NPs can simultaneously extend the time of blood circulation and metabolism, then enhance the targeting ability of the tumor site. In this review, MOF NPs are categorized and exemplified from a new perspective of NP size variation; the advantages, mechanisms, and significance of MOF-based variable-size NPs were summarized, and the potential and challenges in delivering anti-tumor drugs and multimodal combination therapy were discussed.

Semiconducting 2D Copper(I) Iodide Coordination Polymer as a Potential Chemiresistive Sensor for Methanol

The development of a cost-effective, ultra-selective, and room temperature gas sensor is the need of an hour, owing to the rapid industrialization. Here, a new 2D semiconducting Cu(I) coordination polymer (CP) with 1,4-di(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)benzene (1,4-TzB) ligand is reported. The CP1 consists of a Cu2I2 secondary building unit bridged by 1,4-TzB, and has high stability as well as semiconducting properties. The chemiresistive sensor, developed by a facile drop-casting method derived from CP1, demonstrates a response value of 66.7 at 100 ppm on methanol exposure, accompanied by swift transient (response and recovery time 17.5 and 34.2 s, respectively) behavior. In addition, the developed sensor displays ultra-high selectivity toward methanol over other volatile organic compounds , boasting LOD and LOQ values of 1.22 and 4.02 ppb, respectively. The CP is found to be a state-of-the-art chemiresistive sensor with ultra-high sensitivity and selectivity toward methanol at room temperature.

Efficient Removal of Greenhouse Gases: Machine Learning-Assisted Exploration of Metal-Organic Framework Space

Global warming is a crisis that humanity must face together. With greenhouse gases (GHGs) as the main factor causing global warming, the adoption of relevant processes to eliminate them is essential. With the advantages of high specific surface area, large pore volume, and tunable synthesis, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted much attention in GHG storage, adsorption, separation, and catalysis. However, as the pool of MOFs expands rapidly with new syntheses and discoveries, finding a suitable MOF for a particular application is highly challenging. In this regard, high-throughput computational screening is considered the most effective research method for screening a large number of materials to discover high-performance target MOFs. Typically, high-throughput computational screening generates voluminous and multidimensional data, which is well suited for machine learning (ML) training to improve the screening efficiency and explore the relationships between the multidimensional data in depth. This Review summarizes the general process and common methods for using ML to screen MOFs in the field of GHG removal. It also addresses the challenges faced by ML in exploring the MOF space and potential directions for the future development of ML for MOF screening. This aims to enhance the understanding of the integration of ML and MOFs in various fields and broaden the application and development ideas of MOFs.

Harvesting Multicolor Photoluminescence in Nonaromatic Interpenetrated Metal-Organic Framework Nanocrystals via Pressure-Modulated Carbonyls Aggregation

Interpenetrated metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with nonaromatic ligands provide a unique platform for adsorption, catalysis, and sensing applications. However, nonemission and the lack of optical property tailoring make it challenging to fabricate smart responsive devices with nonaromatic interpenetrated MOFs based on ligand-centered emission. In this paper, the pressure-induced aggregation effect is introduced in nonaromatic interpenetrated Zn4O(ADC)4(Et3N)6 (IRMOF-0) nanocrystals (NCs), where carbonyl groups aggregation results in O─O distances smaller than the sum of the van der Waals radii (3.04 Å), triggering the photoluminescence turn-on behavior. It is noteworthy that the IRMOF-0 NCs display an ultrabroad emission tunability of 130 nm from deep blue (440 nm) to yellow (570 nm) upon release to ambient conditions at different pressures. The eventual retention of through-space n-π* interactions in different degrees via pressure treatment is primarily responsible for achieving a controllable multicolor emission behavior in initially nonemissive IRMOF-0 NCs. The fabricated multicolor phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes based on the pressure-treated IRMOF-0 NCs exhibit excellent thermal, chromaticity, and fatigue stability. The proposed strategy not only imparts new vitality to nonaromatic interpenetrated MOFs but also offers new perspectives for advancements in the field of multicolor displays and daylight illumination.

Highly Specific Sulfadiazine Detection Using a Two-Dimensional Europium-Organic Coordination Polymer

Sulfadiazine (SFZ) is an inexpensive large-consumption antibiotic used for treat bacterial infections but an excess of residues in food can be harmful. Fast and specific luminescence detection of SFZ is highly challenging because of the interference of structurally similar antibiotics. In this work, we develop a two-dimensional europium-organic coordination polymer with excellent luminescence and water stability for highly specific detection of SFZ in the range of 0-0.2 mM. Structural analysis shows that the high stability of coordination polymer is due to the high coordination number of europium ion and the special chelating coordination structure of ligand. The experiment results revealed that the high selectivity and effectively luminescence quenched behaviour of coordination polymer toward SFZ is caused by highly efficient inner filter effect.

Homochiral Tetraphenylethene-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks with Circularly Polarized Luminescence for Enantioselective Recognition

A pair of water-stable and highly porous homochiral fluorescent silver-organic framework enantiomers, namely, R-Ag-BPA-TPyPE (R-1) and S-Ag-BPA-TPyPE (S-1), had been prepared as enantioselective fluorescence sensors. Combining homochiral 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-diyl hydrogen phosphate (BPA) with an AIE-based ligand tetrakis[4-(pyridin-4-yl)phenyl]ethene (TPyPE) in complexes R-1 and S-1 made them possess favorable circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties, and their CPL spectra were almost mirror images of each other. The luminescence dissymmetry factors (glum) are ±2.2 × 10-3 for R-1 and S-1, and the absolute fluorescence quantum yields (ΦFs) are 32.0% for R-1 and S-1, respectively. Complex R-1 could enantioselectively recognize two enantiomers of amino acids in water or DMF with high Stern-Volmer constants of 236-573 M-1 and enantioselectivity ratios of 1.40-1.78.

Variation in Catalytic Efficacies of a 2D pH-Stable MOF by Altering Activation Methods

Although it is well-known that the Lewis acidity of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) can effectively enhance their catalytic activity in organic transformations, access to these Lewis-acidic sites remains a key hurdle to widespread applications of Lewis-acidic catalysis by MOFs. Easy accessibility of strong Lewis acidic sites onto 2D MOFs by using proper activation methods can be a cornerstone in attaining desired catalytic performance. Herein, we report a new 2D chemically stable MOF, IITKGP-60, which displayed excellent framework robustness over a wide pH range (2-12). Benefiting from the abundant open metal sites (OMSs) and framework robustness, the catalytic activity of the developed material was explored in one-pot three-component Strecker reaction and Knoevenagel condensation reaction. Moreover, the developed catalyst is superior in catalyzing the reactions involving sterically hindered substrate (1-naphthaldehyde) with high turnover number. A comparative catalytic study was conducted using different activation methods (chloroform and methanol exchanged activated samples), highlighting the significant effect of activation methods on its catalytic performances. The sustainable synthetic pathway under solvent-free conditions for a broad scope of substrates using low catalyst loading and excellent recyclability made the developed pH-stable framework a promising heterogeneous catalyst.

Investigation on structure and photoluminescence properties of Ho3+ doped Ca3(VO4)2 phosphors for luminescent devices

This study focuses on the synthesis and characterization of Ho3+ doped Ca3(VO4)2 phosphor for potential application in solid-state lighting technology. A citrate-based sol-gel process is optimized to achieve sheet-like morphologies in the phosphor material. The investigation reveals UV absorption at 371 nm, indicating a band gap of 3.28 eV. Emission transitions at (506, 541, and 651) nm are observed when excited at 451 nm, with an optimal Ho3+ concentration of 0.05 mol resulting in robust green emission at 541 nm. The concentration quenching in Ca3(VO4)2:xHo3+ phosphors is discussed in detail with Blesse's and Dexter's models. The concentration quenching effect found in the studied samples is due to the dipole-dipole interactions. Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters were calculated from the excitation bands, and for Ω 2, Ω 4, and Ω 6 are (0.16, 0.17, and 0.36) × 10-20 cm2, respectively. The emission properties for the (5S2 + 5F4) → 5I8 and 5F5 → 5I8 transitions are also estimated with J-O parameters. The higher magnitude of branching ratios (83%) and emission cross-sections (1.6 × 10-21 cm2) suggest that the Ca3(VO4)2:0.05Ho3+ phosphor materials may be suitable for efficient green-emitting device applications. The CIE coordinates confirm the potential of Ho3+-doped phosphors for green emissions, making them suitable for solid-state lighting and display technology.

Chiral Linker Installation in a Metal-Organic Framework for Enantioselective Luminescent Sensing

Linker installation is a potent strategy for integrating specific properties and functionalities into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). This method enhances the structural diversity of frameworks and enables the precise construction of robust structures, complementing the conventional postsynthetic modification approaches, by fully leveraging open metal sites and active organic linkers at targeting locations. Herein, we demonstrated an insertion of a d-camphorate linker into a flexible Zr-based MOF, PCN-700, through linker installation. The resultant homochiral MOF not only exhibits remarkable stability but also functions as a highly efficient luminescent material for enantioselective sensing. Competitive absorption and energy/electron transfer processes contribute to the sensing performance, while the difference in binding affinities dominates the enantioselectivity. This work presents a straightforward route to crafting stable homochiral MOFs for enantioselective sensing.

Unravelling co-catalyst integration methods in Ti-based metal-organic gels for photocatalytic H2 production

The synthesis, characterization and photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance of a series of metal-organic gels (MOGs) constructed from titanium(IV)-oxo clusters and dicarboxylato linkers (benzene-1,4-dicarboxylato and 2-aminobenzene-1,4-dicarboxylato) are described. All the MOGs exhibit a microstructure comprised of metal-organic nanoparticles intertwined into a highly meso-/macroporous structure, as demonstrated by cryogenic transmission electron microscopy and gas adsorption isotherms. Comprehensive chemical characterization enabled the estimation of the complex formula for these defective materials, which exhibit low crystallinity and linker vacancies. To gain deeper insights into the local structure, X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy experiments were performed and compared to that of the analogous crystalline metal-organic framework. Additionally, the ultraviolet-visible absorption properties and optical band gaps were determined from diffuse reflectance spectroscopy data. The MOGs were studied as light absorbers for the sacrificial photocatalytic HER under simulated solar light irradiation using a platinum co-catalyst by either (1) in situ photodeposition or (2) ex situ doping process, through a post-synthetic metalation of the MOG structure. The chemical analysis of the metalation, along with high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, revealed that although the in situ addition of the co-catalyst led to greater HER rates (227 vs. 110 μmolH2 gMOG-1 h-1 for in situ and ex situ, respectively), the ex situ modification provided a finer distribution of platinum nanoparticles along the porous microstructure and, as a result, it led to a more efficient utilization of the co-catalyst (45 vs. 110 mmolH2 gPt-1 h-1).

A three-modal fluorescent sensor harnessing diverse luminescent mechanisms for the purpose of segmented Baijiu identification

The classification and verification of segmented Baijiu hold significant importance as they profoundly influence the blending and overall quality of the Baijiu. Our scholarly investigation yielded a fluorescent sensor with three luminescent modes by integrating Tb3+ and RHB into UiO-66. The interplay between carboxyl-containing compounds and RHB/Tb@TLU-2 orchestrates a harmonious molecular association, where the convergence of carboxyl groups with Tb3+ yields a resonating impact on the antenna effect of BDC-SO3-. Furthermore, the acidity and alkalinity of reactants induced a charge transfer interaction between BDC-NH2 and Zr4+ and led to structural changes in RHB/Tb@TLU-2, resulting in observable fluorescence signal variations across the three emission centers. The sensor array successfully identified eight organic acids, achieving an impressive 97.5 % accuracy in discerning segmented Baijiu samples from four Baijiu pits. This meticulous methodology prioritizes simplicity, swiftness, and effectiveness, paving the path for comprehensive segmented Baijiu analysis in the esteemed realm of Brewing production.

Design and Synthesis of Transferrable Macro-Sized Continuous Free-Standing Metal-Organic Framework Films for Biosensor Device

Metal organic framework (MOF) films have attracted abundant attention due to their unique characters compared with MOF particles. But the high-temperature reaction and solvent corrosion limit the preparation of MOF films on fragile substrates, hindering further applications. Fabricating macro-sized continuous free-standing MOF films and transferring them onto fragile substrates are a promising alternative but still challenging. Here, a universal strategy to prepare transferrable macro-sized continuous free-standing MOF films with the assistance of oxide nanomembranes prepared by atomic layer deposition and studied the growth mechanism is developed. The oxide nanomembranes serve not only as reactant, but also as interfacial layer to maintain the integrality of the free-standing structure as the stacked MOF particles are supported by the oxide nanomembrane. The centimeter-scale free-standing MOF films can be transferred onto fragile substrates, and all in one device for glucose sensing is assembled. Due to the strong adsorption toward glucose molecules, the obtained devices exhibit outstanding performance in terms of high sensitivity, low limit of detection, and long durability. This work opens a new window toward the preparation of MOF films and MOF film-based biosensor chip for advantageous applications in post-Moore law period.

Morphology Control of Zr-Based Luminescent Metal-Organic Frameworks for Aflatoxin B1 Detection

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained significant prominence as sensing materials owing to their unique properties. However, understanding the correlation between the morphology, properties, and sensing performance in these MOF-based sensors remains a challenge, limiting their applications and potential for improvement. In this study, Zr-MOF was chosen as an ideal model to explore the impact of the MOF morphology on the sensing performance, given its remarkable stability and structural variability. Three luminescent MOFs (namely rod-like Zr-LMOF, prismoid-like Zr-LMOF, and ellipsoid-like Zr-LMOF) were synthesized by adjusting the quantities of the benzoic acid and the reaction time. More importantly, the sensing performance of these Zr-LMOFs in response to aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) was thoroughly examined. Notably, the ellipsoid-like Zr-LMOF exhibited significantly higher sensitivity compared to other Zr-LMOFs, attributed to its large specific surface area and pore volume. Additionally, an in-depth investigation into the detection mechanism of AFB1 by Zr-LMOFs was conducted. Building upon these insights, a ratiometric fluorescence sensor was developed by coordinating Eu3+ with ellipsoid-like Zr-LMOF, achieving a remarkably lower detection limit of 2.82 nM for AFB1. This study contributes to an improved comprehension of the relationship between the MOF morphology and the sensing characteristics while presenting an effective approach for AFB1 detection.

Stimulus-Induced Dynamic Behavior Regulation of Flexible Crystals through the Tuning of Module Rigidity

Introducing dynamic behavior into periodic frameworks has borne fruit in the form of flexible porous crystals. The detailed molecular design of frameworks in order to control their collective dynamics is of particular interest, for example, to achieve stimulus-induced behavior. Herein, by varying the degree of rigidity of ditopic pillar linkers, two isostructural flexible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with common rigid supermolecular building bilayers were constructed. The subtle substitution of single (in bibenzyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid; H2BBDC) with double (in 4,4'-stilbenedicarboxylic acid; H2SDC) C-C bonds in pillared linkers led to markedly different flexible behavior of these two MOFs. Upon the removal of guest molecules, both frameworks clearly show reversible single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations involving the cis-trans conformation change and a resulting swing of the corresponding pillar linkers, which gives rise to Flex-Cd-MOF-1a and Flex-Cd-MOF-2a, respectively. Strikingly, a more favorable gas-induced dynamic behavior in Flex-Cd-MOF-2a was verified in detail by stepwise C3H6/C3H8 sorption isotherms and the corresponding in situ powder X-ray diffraction experiments. These insights are strongly supported by molecular modeling studies on the sorption mechanism that explores the sorption landscape. Furthermore, a consistency between the macroscopic elasticity and microscopic flexibility of Flex-Cd-MOF-2 was observed. This work fuels a growing interest in developing MOFs with desired chemomechanical functions and presents detailed insights into the origins of flexible MOFs.

Modular Design of Highly Stable Semiconducting Porous Coordination Polymer for Efficient Electrosynthesis of Ammonia

Developing highly stable porous coordination polymers (PCPs) with integrated electrical conductivity is crucial for advancing our understanding of electrocatalytic mechanisms and the structure-activity relationship of electrocatalysts. However, achieving this goal remains a formidable challenge because of the electrochemical instability observed in most PCPs. Herein, we develop a "modular design" strategy to construct electrochemically stable semiconducting PCP, namely, Fe-pyNDI, which incorporates a chain-type Fe-pyrazole metal cluster and π-stacking column with effective synergistic effects. The three-dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED) technique resolves the precise structure. Both theoretical and experimental investigation confirms that the π-stacking column in Fe-pyNDI can provide an efficient electron transport path and enhance the structural stability of the material. As a result, Fe-pyNDI can serve as an efficient model electrocatalyst for nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) to ammonia with a superior ammonia yield of 339.2 μmol h-1 cm-2 (14677 μg h-1 mgcat. -1) and a faradaic efficiency of 87 % at neutral electrolyte, which is comparable to state-of-the-art electrocatalysts. The in-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) reveals that during the reaction, the structure of Fe-pyNDI can be kept, while part of the Fe3+ in Fe-pyNDI was reduced in situ to Fe2+, which serves as the potential active species for NO3RR.

Mo(IV) Ion-Modulated BSA-Protected Gold Nanocluster Probe for Fluorescence Turn-On Detection of Trimethylamine N-Oxide (TMAO)

Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), a molecule produced by the microbiota, has been associated with human health and illness. Its early discovery in body fluids may affect our understanding of the pathophysiology and treatment of many illnesses. Therefore, our knowledge of the pathophysiology and diagnostics of disorders associated with TMAO might be enhanced by the creation of dependable and fast methods for TMAO detection. Therefore, we developed a fluorescent probe for detecting TMAO utilizing an on-off-on strategy. Bovine serum albumin (BSA)@AuNCs luminescence is effectively quenched by Mo4+ because BSA@AuNCs and Mo4+ have a strong binding relationship. Mo4+ ions can substantially decrease the emission intensity of gold nanoclusters by establishing a BSA@AuNCs-Mo system. Then, the luminescence of BSA@AuNCs was restored due to the interaction between Mo4+ and TMAO. A significant linear relationship was seen between the emission intensity and TMAO concentration within the 0-201 μM range, with a detection limit of 1.532 μM. Additionally, the method can measure TMAO in blood and urine samples.

Amyloid detection in neurodegenerative diseases using MOFs

Neurodegenerative diseases (amyloid diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's), stemming from protein misfolding and aggregation, encompass a spectrum of disorders with severe systemic implications. Timely detection is pivotal in managing these diseases owing to their significant impact on organ function and high mortality rates. The diverse array of amyloid disorders, spanning localized and systemic manifestations, underscores the complexity of these conditions and highlights the need for advanced detection methods. Traditional approaches have focused on identifying biomarkers using imaging techniques (PET and MRI) or invasive procedures. However, recent efforts have focused on the use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a versatile class of materials known for their unique properties, in revolutionizing amyloid disease detection. The high porosity, customizable structures, and biocompatibility of MOFs enable their integration with biomolecules, laying the groundwork for highly sensitive and specific biosensors. These sensors have been employed using electrochemical and photophysical techniques that target amyloid species under neurodegenerative conditions. The adaptability of MOFs allows for the precise detection and quantification of amyloid proteins, offering potential advancements in early diagnosis and disease management. This review article delves into how MOFs contribute to detecting amyloid diseases by categorizing their uses based on different sensing methods, such as electrochemical (EC), electrochemiluminescence (ECL), fluorescence, Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET), up-conversion luminescence resonance energy transfer (ULRET), and photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing. The drawbacks of MOF biosensors and the challenges encountered in the field are also briefly explored from our perspective.

Tumor targeted porphyrin-based metal-organic framework for photodynamic and checkpoint blockade immunotherapy

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has become a promising approach and non-invasive modality for cancer treatment, however the therapeutic effect of PDT is limited in tumor metastasis and local recurrence. Herein, a tumor targeted nanomedicine (designated as PCN@HA) is constructed for enhanced PDT against tumors. By modified with hyaluronic acid (HA), which could target the CD44 receptor that expressed on the cancer cells, the targeting ability of PCN@HA has been enhanced. Under light irradiation, PCN@HA can produce cytotoxic singlet oxygen (1O2) and kill cancer cells, then eliminate tumors. Furthermore, PCN@HA exhibits fluorescence (FL)/ photoacoustic (PA) effects for multimodal imaging-guided cancer treatment. And PCN@HA-mediated PDT also can induce immunogenic cell death (ICD) and stimulate adaptive immune responses by releasing of tumor antigens. By combining with anti-PD-L1 checkpoint blockade therapy, it can not only effectively suppress the growth of primary tumor, but also inhibit the metastatic tumor growth.

A Study on Auto-Catalysis and Product Inhibition: A Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitution Reaction Catalysed within the Cavity of an Octanuclear Coordination Cage

The ability of an octanuclear cubic coordination cage to catalyse a nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction on a cavity-bound guest was studied with 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB) as the guest/substrate. It was found that DNFB undergoes a catalysed reaction with hydroxide ions within the cavity of the cubic cage (in aqueous buffer solution, pH 8.6). The rate enhancement of kcat/kuncat was determined to be 22, with cavity binding of the guest being required for catalysis to occur. The product, 2,4-dinitrophenolate (DNP), remained bound within the cavity due to electrostatic stabilisation and exerts two apparently contradictory effects: it initially auto-catalyses the reaction when present at low concentrations, but at higher concentrations inhibits catalysis when a pair of DNP guests block the cavity. When encapsulated, the UV/Vis absorption spectrum of DNP is red-shifted when compared to the spectrum of free DNP in aqueous solution. Further investigations using other aromatic guests determined that a similar red-shift on cavity binding also occurred for 4-nitrophenolate (4NP) at pH 8.6. The red-shift was used to determine the stoichiometry of guest binding of DNP and 4NP within the cage cavity, which was confirmed by structural analysis with X-ray crystallography; and was also used to perform catalytic kinetic studies in the solution-state.

Two-dimensional metal-organic framework for post-synthetic immobilization of graphene quantum dots for photoluminescent sensing

Immobilization of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) on a solid support is crucial to prevent GQDs from aggregation in the form of solid powder and facilitate the separation and recycling of GQDs after use. Herein, spatially dispersed GQDs are post-synthetically coordinated within a two-dimensional (2D) and water-stable zirconium-based metal-organic framework (MOF). Unlike pristine GQDs, the obtained GQDs immobilized on 2D MOF sheets show photoluminescence in both suspension and dry powder. Chemical and photoluminescent stabilities of MOF-immobilized GQDs in water are investigated, and the use of immobilized GQDs in the photoluminescent detection of copper ions is demonstrated. Findings here shed the light on the use of 2D MOFs as a platform to further immobilize GQDs with various sizes and distinct chemical functionalities for a range of applications.

Metal-Organic Framework Based Sensors for Benzene Vapor

Sensing of benzene vapor is a hot spot due to the volatile drastic carcinogen even at trace concentration. However, achieving convenient and rapid detection is still a challenge. As a sort of functional porous material, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been developed as detection sensors by adsorbing benzene vapor and converting it into other signals (fluorescence intensity/wavelength, chemiresistive, weight or color, etc.). Supramolecular interaction between benzene molecules and the host framework, aperture size/shape and structural flexibility are influential factors in the performance of MOF-based sensors. Therefore, enhancing the host-guest interactions between the host framework and benzene molecules, or regulating the diffusion rate of benzene molecules by changing the aperture size/shape and flexibility of the host framework to enhance the detection signal are effective strategies for constructing MOF-based sensors. This concept highlights several types of MOF-based sensors for the detection of benzene vapor.

Experimental and Theoretical Studies of Fluorescent "Turn Off" Sensor Functionalized With Carboxylic Acid and Naphthalene Group for Selective Detection of 2,4,6-Trinitrophenol

A fluorescent sensor, 5-((2-hydroxynaphthalen-1-yl)methyleneamino)benzene-1,3-dicarboxylic acid (coded as SB), containing both π-π interacting sites (such as π-electron-rich moieties) and hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) interacting sites (such as highly acidic protons) has been developed via high yield reflux method. It was characterized by the various analytical techniques such as Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1 H-NMR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), field emission scanning electron microscope (Fe-SEM), elemental mapping, and UV - visible spectroscopy etc. The spectral response of the as-synthesized SB sensor has been investigated for various nitro explosives (NEs). It has been found that the SB sensor selectively and sensitive sense highly toxic 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) via the "turn-off" quenching response. Its limit of detection for TNP was calculated to be 30 ppb. Spectral overlap, detailed mechanistic studies for their mode of action, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveals that photo-induced electron transfer process (PET), fluorescence energy transfers process (FRET), and electrostatic interactions (i.e. H-bonding) are the key factors for the turn-off response of SB towards TNP. Notably, the synthesis of the sensor is cost-effective, energy efficient, and economic.

A Photoelectromagnetic 3D Metal-Organic Framework from Flexible Tetraarylethylene-Backboned Ligand and Dynamic Copper-Based Coordination Chemistry

Porous frameworks that display dynamic responsiveness are of interest in the fields of smart materials, information technology, etc. In this work, a novel copper-based dynamic metal-organic framework [Cu3TTBPE6(H2O)2] (H4TTBPE = 1,1,2,2-tetrakis(4″-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)-[1,1″-biphenyl]-4-yl)ethane), denoted as HNU-1, is reported which exhibits modulable photoelectromagnetic properties. Due to the synergetic effect of flexible tetraarylethylene-backboned ligands and diverse copper-tetrazole coordination chemistries, a complex 3D tunneling network is established in this MOF by the layer-by-layer staggered assembly of triplicate monolayers, showing a porosity of 59%. These features further make it possible to achieve dynamic transitions, in which the aggregate-state MOF can be transferred to different structural states by changing the chemical environment or upon heating while displaying sensitive responsiveness in terms of light absorption, photoluminescence, and magnetic properties.

Excitation wavelength-dependent lanthanide-disalicylaldehyde coordination hybrid capable of distinguishing D2O from H2O

The increasing demands in fields of anti-counterfeiting, fluorescence analysis, clinical therapy and LED illumination are urgently eager for more excellent optically switchable luminescent materials with the stable and multimodal fluorescence in single-component matrix. Herein, the lanthanide-disalicylaldehyde coordination hybrid H2Qj4/TbxEuy is proposed as an efficient luminescent matrix to connect terbium sensibilization with ESIPT (excited-state intramolecular proton transfer) effects, and three multi-emission hybrids are finally designed and synthesized by regulating Tb3+ and Eu3+ ratios. Surprisingly, the H2Qj4/Tb0.91Eu0.09 shows the excitation wavelength-dependent luminescence in solution which originates from two energy transfer ways of terbium sensibilization effect. It exhibits green and red lights under the 369 and 394 nm UV lamp, respectively. Three hybrids are further used as lab-on-a-molecule fluorescent probes to perform multianalyte detection for various solvents by selected fluorescent sensing channels. By means of PCA (principal component analysis) and HCA (hierarchical cluster analysis), all of them can successfully detect and discriminate17 common solvents, especially the H2O and D2O. Moreover, the H2Qj4/Tb0.91Eu0.09 also shows the wide linear responses of H2O content in D2O, discrimination of two-component solvent mixtures, hygroscopicity evaluation of D2O and information encryption which will advance the progress of multimodal luminescent materials and multianalyte chemosensors.

Microfluidic-Aerosol Hyphenated Synthesis of Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Hybrid Catalysts for CO2 Utilization

A new and efficient technique is developed by combining the hyphenated microfluidic- and aerosol-based synthesis with the coupled differential mobility analysis for the effective and continuous synthesis and simultaneous analysis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived hybrid nanostructured products. HKUST-1, a copper-based MOF, is chosen as the representative to fabricate Cu-based hybrid catalysts for reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction, an effective route for CO2 utilization. The effect of precursor concentration and carrier selection on the properties of the resulting products, including mobility size distribution, crystallization degree, surface area, and metal dispersion are investigated, as well as the correlation between the material properties of the synthesized catalysts and their catalytic performance in RWGS reaction in terms of conversion ratio/rate, selectivity, and operational stability. The results indicate that the continuous microfluidic droplet system can successfully synthesize MOF colloids, followed by the continuous production of MOF-derived hybrid materials through the tandem aerosol spray-drying-reaction system. High catalytic activity and low initiate temperature toward RWGS (turnover frequency = 0.0074 s-1; 450 °C) are achievable. The work facilitates the production and the designed concept of relevant MOF-derived hybrid nanostructured catalysts in the continuous synthesis system and the enhancement of applications in CO2 capture and utilization.

Probing ligand conformation and net dimensionality in a series of tetraphenylethene-based metal-organic frameworks

Tetraphenylethene-based ligands with lowered symmetry are promising building blocks for the construction of novel luminescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). However, few examples have been reported, and predicting the ligand conformation and the dimensionality of the resulting MOF remains challenging. In order to uncover how synthetic conditions and accessible ligand conformations may affect the resulting MOF structure, four new MOF structures were synthesized under solvothermal conditions using the meta-coordinated tetraphenylethene-based ligand m-ETTC and paddlewheel SBUs composed of Co(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II). WSU-10 (WSU = Washington State University) is formed with either Zn or Cu comprising stacked psuedo-2D layers. The dimensionality of WSU-10 can be intentionally increased through the addition of pyrazine as a pillar ligand into the synthesis, forming the 3D structure WSU-11. The third structure, WSU-20, is formed by the combination of Zn or Co with m-ETTC and is intrinsically 3D without the use of a pillar ligand; interestingly, this is the result of a distortion in the paddlewheel SBU. Finally, Cu was also found to form a new structure (WSU-12), which displays an m-ETTC conformation unique from that found in the other isolated MOFs. Structural features are compared across the series and a mechanistic relationship between WSU-10 and -20 is proposed, providing insight into the factors that can encourage the generation of frameworks with increased dimensionality.

Influence of Humidity on Layer-by-Layer Growth and Structure in Coordination Networks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials because of their high designability of pores and functionalities. Especially, MOF thin films and their properties have been investigated toward applications in nanodevices. Typically, MOF thin films are fabricated by using a bottom-up method such as layer-by-layer (LbL) growth in air. Because the water molecules can coordinate and be replaced with organic linkers during synthesis, humidity conditions will be expected to influence the LbL growth processes. In this study, we fabricated MOF thin films composed of Zn2+, tetrakis-(4-carboxyphenyl)-porphyrin (TCPP), and 4,4'-bipyridyl (bpy) at 10 and 40% relative humidity (RH) conditions. Then, we investigated the humidity effects on chemical compositions of TCPP and bpy, periodic structure, orientation, and surface morphology. At high RH, coordination replacement of water with the organic linkers becomes more competitive than that at low RH, resulting in a different TCPP/bpy composition ratio between the two RH conditions. Also, more frequent coordination replacements of water with the organic linkers at high RH led to the formation of phases other than that observed at low RH, loss of growth orientation, and rough surface. The findings clarified the importance of controlling the RH condition during LbL growth to obtain the desired coordination networks.

Diverse Co(II) Coordination Polymers with the Same Mixed Ligands: Evaluation of Chemical Stability and Structural Transformation

Reactions of Co(OAc)2·4H2O, N'N'-bis(3-pyridylmethyl)oxalamide (L) and 4,4'-sulfonyldibenzoic acid (H2SDA) afforded four coordination polymers with the same mixed ligands, {[Co(L)(SDA)(H2O)2]·H2O·CH3OH}n, 1, {[Co(L)0.5(SDA)]·2H2O·0.5L}n, 2, {[Co(L)1.5(SDA)(H2O)]·H2O}n, 3, and {[Co2(L)1.5(SDA)2(H2O)2]·4H2O}n, 4, which have been structurally characterized using single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Complexes 1-4 are 2D layers, revealing topologies of sql, 2,6L1, (4,4)Ia, and 6L12, respectively, and demonstrating that the metal-to-ligand ratio, solvent system, and reaction temperature are important in determining the structural diversity. The immersion of these complexes into various solvents shows that the structural types govern the chemical stabilities of 1-4. Reversible structural transformation is shown for complexes 1 and 2 upon solvent removal and adsorption, while those of 3 and 4 are irreversible.

Luminescent Supramolecular Ionic Frameworks based on Organic Fluorescent Polycations and Polyanionic Phosphorescent Metal Clusters

Emissive ionic supramolecular frameworks are designed by associating tetraphenylethylene-based tetra-cationic units and di-anionic molybdenum or tetra-anionic rhenium octahedral clusters. Obtained structures were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The emission properties of the hybrids were investigated as dry powders or in various solvents by one photon and two photon absorption leading to a O2 concentration dependent luminescence color for the Mo based hybrid.

Exciplex Formation by Complexation of an Electron-Accepting Guest in an Electron-Donating Pillar[5]arene Host Liquid

We present a novel system, a liquid-state pillar[5]arene decorated with tri(ethylene oxide) chains, that brings electron-donor and electron-acceptor molecules into proximity for efficient exciplex formation. The electron-accepting guests exhibit a blue-purple emission from a localized excited state upon excitation in common solvents. However, directly dissolving the guests in the electron-donating pillar[5]arene liquid (a bulk system) results in visible green emission from the formed exciplexes. In the bulk system, the guest molecules are always surrounded by excess pillar[5]arene molecules, resulting in the formation of mainly inclusion-type exciplexes. In the bulk system, energy migration occurs between the pillar[5]arene molecules. Excitation of the pillar[5]arenes results in a more intense green exciplex emission than that observed upon direct excitation of the guests. In summary, the pillar[5]arene liquid is a novel system for achieving efficient exciplex formation and energy migration that is different from typical solvent and solid systems.
