pH-Controlled assembly of two novel Dawson-sandwiched clusters involving the in situ reorganization of trivacant α-[P2W15O56](12-) into divacant α-[P2W16O57](8.)

A tetrahedron-shaped polyoxoantimotungstate encapsulating a hexanuclear octahedral lanthanide-oxo cluster for an amperometric bromate sensor

An inorganic hexalanthanide-oxo-cluster-encapsulated antimotungstate, K2Na3H43[Nd6(OH)6(H2O)6(B-α-SbW9O33)4]2·67H2O (1), has been successfully synthesized by a facile one-step hydrothermal reaction method. The tetrahedron-shaped two-shell {Nd6(OH)6(H2O)6(B-α-SbW9O33)4}(1a) polyanion is composed of a novel pure lanthanide-oxo {Nd6(μ3-OH)6(H2O)6} octahedron and {(B-α-SbW9O33)4} tetrahedron. After being effectively loaded onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by electrostatic adsorption using polydiallyldimethyl ammonium chloride (PDDA)-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), compound 1 exhibits electrochemical activity for the reduction of bromate ions with good selectivity, a high sensitivity of 186 μA mM-1 and a detection limit that has reached 1.9 μM. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of an amperometric bromate sensor based on Ln-containing antimotungstates, which will provide new materials for electrochemical sensors.

Four octamolybdate compounds with properties of organic dye adsorption and photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI)

Hydrothermal synthesis was used to create four different POM-based compounds, namely {[Co(Hptpm)2(β-Mo8O26)0.5(ξ-Mo8O26)0.5]}·H2O (1), [Co(Hptpm)2(δ-Mo8O26)]·H2O (2), [Co(Hptpm)2(β-Mo8O26)] (3) and [Zn(Hptpm)2(β-Mo8O26)] (4) (ptpm = 4-[3-(3-pyridine-2-yl-[1,2,4]triazol-4-yl)-propyl]-morpholine). 1-4 containing different octamolybdate isomers were characterized. Compounds 1-4 showed good electrochemical performance and can be utilized as bifunctional sensors for NO2-, H2O2, Cr(VI) and Fe(III). Taking compound 1 as an example, the detection limits are 0.081 μM for NO2-, 0.072 μM for H2O2, 0.054 μM for Cr(VI) and 0.063 μM for Fe(III), respectively. Compounds 1-4 have good capacitance. Moreover, compounds 1-4 also show good adsorption properties for organic cationic dyes. The cationic dyes include methylene blue (MB), crystal violet (CV) and neutral red (NR). In addition, 1-4 have excellent characteristics that can reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III) by photocatalytic technology. Within 30 min, the reduction rates were 95.85% for 1, 93.99% for 2, 90.29% for 3 and 88.18% for 4.

Roles of Organic Fragments in Redirecting Crystal/Molecular Structures of Inorganic-Organic Hybrids Based on Lacunary Keggin-Type Polyoxometalates

Lacunary polyoxometalates (LPOMs) are key precursors for the synthesis of functional POMs. To date, reviews dedicated to behavioral studies of LPOMs often comprise the role of metal ions, including transition metal (TM) and rare earth (RE) ions, in extending and stability of high-nuclearity clusters. In contrast, the role of organic ligands in the structures and properties of lacunary-based hybrids has remained less explored. In this review, we focus on the role of organic fragments in the self-assembling process of POM-based architectures and discuss relationships between the nature and structure of organic ligand and properties such as the topology of hybrid inorganic–organic material in RE and TM-RE heterometallic derivatives of lacunary Keggin-type POMs. The effects of organic fragment in mixed ligand hybrids are also briefly reviewed.

Ru(III) -based polyoxometalate tetramers as highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts for alcohol oxidation reactions at room temperature

A novel ruthenium-containing polyoxometalate-based organic-inorganic hybrid, K₄Na₉H_7.4[(AsW₉O₃₃)₄(WO₂)₄{Ru_3.2(C₃H₃N₂)₂}]·42H₂O (1), was successfully synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method under acidic conditions, which applied a self-assembly strategy between inorganic polyoxometalate based on trivacant [B-α-AsW₉O₃₃]^9- {AsW₉} fragments and an organic ligand, imidazole (C₃H₄N₂). Compound 1 was further characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, PXRD, IR spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, ESI-MS, elemental analysis and TGA. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction data reveal that the polyanion consists of four trivacant Keggin-type polyanion {AsW₉} building blocks bridged by four {WO₆} units, leading to a crown-shaped tetrameric structure [(AsW₉O₃₃)₄(WO₂)₄{Ru_3.2(C₃H₃N₂)₂}]^20.4-. The ESI-MS result reveals that the polyanion unit has excellent structural integrity in water. Moreover, the catalysis study of 1 was also further investigated, and the experimental results indicate heterogeneous catalyst 1 presents high efficiency (yield = 98%), excellent selectivity (>99%), and good recyclability for the oxidation of 1-(4-chlorophenyl)ethanol to 4'-chloroacetophenone with commercially available 70% aqueous tert-butyl hydroperoxide {TBHP (aq.)} as the oxidant at room temperature.

Transition-Metal-Modified Vanadoborate Clusters as Stable and Efficient Photocatalysts for CO2 Reduction

Photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction (CO₂RR) is considered to be a promising sustainable and clean approach to solve environmental issues. Polyoxometalates (POMs), with advantages in fast, reversible, and stepwise multiple-electron transfer without changing their structures, have been promising catalysts in various redox reactions. However, their performance is often restricted by poor thermal or chemical stability. In this work, two transition-metal-modified vanadoborate clusters, [Co(en)₂]₆[V₁₂B₁₈O₅₄(OH)₆]·17H₂O (V₁₂B₁₈-Co) and [Ni(en)₂]₆[V₁₂B₁₈O₅₄(OH)₆]·17H₂O (V₁₂B₁₈-Ni), are reported for photocatalytic CO₂ reduction. V₁₂B₁₈-Co and V₁₂B₁₈-Ni can preserve their structures to 200 and 250 °C, respectively, and remain stable in polar organic solvents and a wide range of pH solutions. Under visible-light irradiation, CO₂ can be converted into syngas and HCOO^- with V₁₂B₁₈-Co or V₁₂B₁₈-Ni as catalysts. The total amount of gaseous products and liquid products for V₁₂B₁₈-Co is up to 9.5 and 0.168 mmol g^-1 h^-1. Comparing with V₁₂B₁₈-Co, the yield of CO for V₁₂B₁₈-Ni declines by 1.8-fold, while that of HCOO^- increases by 35%. The AQY of V₁₂B₁₈-Co and V₁₂B₁₈-Ni is 1.1% and 0.93%, respectively. These values are higher than most of the reported POM materials under similar conditions. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations illuminate the active site of CO₂RR and the reduction mechanism. This work provides new insights into the design of stable, high-performance, and low-cost photocatalysts for CO₂ reduction.

A series of polyoxometalate-based hybrid complexes constructed by a tripodal ligand containing mixed N/O donors

We designed two synthetic strategies using identical ligands to construct six POM-based complexes. These complexes can act as amperometric sensors for the detection of Cr(vi), Fe(iii) and H2O2 and fluorescence sensors for sensing Cr3+.

Space Craft-like Octanuclear Co(II)-Silsesquioxane Nanocages: Synthesis, Structure, Magnetic Properties, Solution Behavior, and Catalytic Activity for Hydroboration of Ketones

Two novel space craft-like octanuclear Co(II)-silsesquioxane nanocages, {Co₈[(MeSiO₂)₄]₂(dmpz)₈} (SD/Co8a) and {Co₈[(PhSiO₂)₄]₂(dmpz)₈} (SD/Co8b) (SD = SunDi; Hdmpz = 3,5-dimethylpyrazole), have been constructed from two similar multidentate silsesquioxane ligands assisted with a pyrazole ligand. The Co₈ skeleton consists of eight tetrahedral Co(II) ions arranged in a ring and is further capped by two (MeSiO₂)₄ ligands up and down. The auxiliary dmpz^- ligands seal the ring finally. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry revealed SD/Co8a and SD/Co8b are highly stable in CH₂Cl₂. Magnetic analysis implies that SD/Co8a announces antiferromagnetic interactions between Co(II) ions. Moreover, both of them display good homogeneous catalytic activity for hydroboration of ketones in the presence of pinacolborane under mild conditions.

A new tetra-Zr(iv)-substituted polyoxotungstate aggregate

A new tetra-Zr(iv)-substituted tungstophosphate [H₂N(CH₃)₂]₆Na₆H₈{Zr₂[SbP₂W₄(OH)₂O₂₁][α₂-PW₁₀O₃₈]}₂·50H₂O has been made and structurally characterized. Its electrochemical and electrocatalytic properties have also been investigated.

Seven novel polyoxometalate-based metal–organic complexes are synthesized and structurally characterized, exhibiting high electrochemical sensitivity to pH and photocatalytic activities for the degradation of organic dyes under UV irradiation.
