Recent applications of waste solid materials in pavement engineering

Solid waste materials refer to those municipal or industrial or even domestic wastes that are massively produced during manufacture as well as daily life. A wide variety of solid wastes are generated, but only a few of them are employed in pavement structures. To achieve the task, papers between 2014 and 2019 from top journals which address waste management, waste characterization, and economic and environmental assessment were collected at first. Then, the scope of solid waste materials was narrowed down based on their applications, In the end, six most popular solid waste materials were selected for further study and for the review, namely recycled concrete aggregates, reclaimed asphalt pavement, fly ash, bottom ash, waste rubber, and waste plastics. The reason why only these six solid waste materials are selected is that the rest are neither massively produced not can they be directly used in pavement structures. This review article contains structural properties, treatments, novel researches, environmental analysis, and economic analysis of each solid waste material. The objective of this review article is to provide future researchers with the latest research findings, limitations and improvements in this subject. In conclusion, quite a few novel researchers in terms of workmanship, construction methodology, and treatments are collected for all six materials. Furthermore, an increasing number of findings have proven that most solid waste materials have both environmental and economic benefits when applied in field. Future researchers are encouraged to implement researches on solid waste materials in pavement engineering with consideration of both material properties and environmental/economic effects.

Application and Selection of Remediation Technology for OCPs-Contaminated Sites by Decision-Making Methods

The production and use of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) for agricultural and industrial applications result in high levels of their residues, posing a significant risk to environmental and human health. At present, there are many techniques for OCP-contaminated soil remediation. However, the remediation of contaminated sites may suffer from a series of problems, such as a long recovery cycle, high costs, and secondary pollution, all of which could affect land redevelopment and reuse. Therefore, the selection of an appropriate technology is crucial for contaminated sites. In order to improve and support decision-making for the selection of remediation techniques, we provide a decision-making strategy for the screening of remediation techniques of OCP-contaminated sites. The screening procedure is proposed based on combining the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS). The screening indexes include economic indicator, environmental indicator, and technical indicator. The assessment results show that co-processing in cement kiln obtained the highest overall score and was thus considered to be the most sustainable option. This suggested remediation technology was similar to the practical remediation project, indicating that the screening method could be applied for the selection of remediation technologies for sites contaminated with persistent organic pollutants.

Distribution and removal of organochlorine pesticides in waste clay bricks from an abandoned manufacturing plant using low-temperature thermal desorption technology

The distribution of pollutants in waste clay bricks from an organochlorine pesticide-contaminated site was investigated, and removal of the pollutants using a thermal desorption technology was studied. The results showed that the contents of HCHs in both the surface and the inner layer of the bricks were slightly higher than those of DDTs. The total pore volume of the bricks was 37.7 to 41.6% with an increase from external to internal surfaces. The removal efficiency by thermal treatment was within 62 to 83% for HCHs and DDTs in bricks when the temperature was raised from 200 to 250 °C after 1 h. HCHs were more easily removed than DDTs with a higher temperature. Either intraparticle or surface diffusion controls the desorption processes of pollutants in bricks. It was feasible to use the polluted bricks after removal of the pollutants by low-temperature thermal desorption technology.

Evaluating the performance and intellectual structure of construction and demolition waste research during 2000-2016

Construction and demolition (C&D) waste diminishes scarce land resources and endangers human health and the surrounding environment. Quantitative and visualized analysis was conducted to evaluate worldwide scientific research output on C&D waste from 2000 to 2016. The related information of 857 publications was collected from SCI-Expanded database and statistically analyzed. The number of documents about C&D waste presented a general growth during the last 17 years. Construction and Building Materials publication ranked first in the most productive journals. China and Spain acted as dominated roles comparing to other countries, and Hong Kong Polytechnic University was the institution with the largest amount of C&D waste research. Recycled aggregates, sustainable C&D waste management, and the rewarding program and commerce system were the hottest topics during 2000-2016 and in the near future according to the intellectual structure analysis.
