Antimicrobial surfaces: a review of synthetic approaches, applicability and outlook

The rapid spread of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses can be extremely detrimental and can lead to seasonal epidemics or even pandemic situations. In addition, these microorganisms may bring about fouling of food and essential materials resulting in substantial economic losses. Typically, the microorganisms get transmitted by their attachment and growth on various household and high contact surfaces such as doors, switches, currency. To prevent the rapid spread of microorganisms, it is essential to understand the interaction between various microbes and surfaces which result in their attachment and growth. Such understanding is crucial in the development of antimicrobial surfaces. Here, we have reviewed different approaches to make antimicrobial surfaces and correlated surface properties with antimicrobial activities. This review concentrates on physical and chemical modification of the surfaces to modulate wettability, surface topography, and surface charge to inhibit microbial adhesion, growth, and proliferation. Based on these aspects, antimicrobial surfaces are classified into patterned surfaces, functionalized surfaces, superwettable surfaces, and smart surfaces. We have critically discussed the important findings from systems of developing antimicrobial surfaces along with the limitations of the current research and the gap that needs to be bridged before these approaches are put into practice.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Antimicrobial Evaluation of Random Poly(ester-Carbonate)s Bearing Pendant Primary Amine in the Main Chain

Starting from primary amine bearing cyclic carbonate tert-butyl-(2-oxo-1,3-dioxan-5-yl) carbamate (TBODC) and caprolactone (CL), amphiphilic poly(caprolactone-ran-amino trimethyl carbonate)s (P(CL-ran-ATC)s) random copolymers with controlled molecular weight and composition were synthesized via ring opening polymerization (ROP) and deprotection, using stannous octoate (Sn(Oct)₂) as catalyst and benzyl alcohol (BnOH) as initiator. Therefore, hydrophilic/lipophilic ratio (HLR) of the P(CL-ran-ATC)s copolymers can be finely adjusted by the feed ratio of TBODC and CL. The antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) of P(CL-ran-ATC)s were proportional to HLR, and P(CL-ran-ATC)s presented more vigorous bactericidal activity towards S. aureus. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of P(CL-ran-ATC 50.9%) are 2000 μg mL^-1 and 3000 μg mL^-1 for S. aureus and E. coli. While P(CL-ran-ATC 50.9%) exhibited deficient hemolytic activity as 1.41%. In addition, the P(CL-ran-ATC)s showed extremely low cytotoxicity towards fibroblast L929 cells.

Chitosan-Functionalized Graphene Nanocomposite Films: Interfacial Interplay and Biological Activity

Graphene oxide (GO) has recently captured tremendous attention, but only few functionalized graphene derivatives were used as fillers, and insightful studies dealing with the thermal, mechanical, and biological effects of graphene surface functionalization are currently missing in the literature. Herein, reduced graphene oxide (rGO), phosphorylated graphene oxide (PGO), and trimethylsilylated graphene oxide (SiMe3GO) were prepared by the post-modification of GO. The electrostatic interactions of these fillers with chitosan afforded colloidal solutions that provide, after water evaporation, transparent and flexible chitosan-modified graphene films. All reinforced chitosan-graphene films displayed improved mechanical, thermal, and antibacterial (S. aureus, E. coli) properties compared to native chitosan films. Hemolysis, intracellular catalase activity, and hemoglobin oxidation were also observed for these materials. This study shows that graphene functionalization provides a handle for tuning the properties of graphene-reinforced nanocomposite films and customizing their functionalities.

Atomic Force Microscopy and Angular-Dependent X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Studies of Anchored Quaternary Ammonium Salt Biocides on Quartz Surfaces

A siloxane surface-anchored quaternary ammonium salt (AQAS: BIOSAFE HM4100 in this study) has been chemisorbed onto a quartz substrate. The aim of this study is to elucidate, using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the structure of the chemisorbed AQAS layers. The AQAS biocide includes a C₁₈ alkyl chain previously invoked in lysis potency. The AQAS coverage appears in zones on the surface, which include a first layer (2.6 ± 0.1 nm) and multilayering that were explored using AFM. The XPS data exhibited two N 1s signals at about 402 and 399 eV, with only the former exhibiting angular dependence. This signal at 402 eV was assigned to the first anchored layer with perpendicular orientation determined by the AQAS anchoring to the surface. In preliminary AFM studies of bacteria on these AQAS surfaces, perturbations on the Staphylococcus aureus cells and the degradation of Escherichia coli cells suggest lysis potency.

Antimicrobial Polymers in the Nano-World

Infections are one of the main concerns of our era due to antibiotic-resistant infections and the increasing costs in the health-care sector. Within this context, antimicrobial polymers present a great alternative to combat these problems since their mechanisms of action differ from those of antibiotics. Therefore, the microorganisms' resistance to these polymeric materials is avoided. Antimicrobial polymers are not only applied in the health-care sector, they are also used in many other areas. This review presents different strategies that combine nanoscience and nanotechnology in the polymer world to combat contaminations from bacteria, fungi or algae. It focuses on the most relevant areas of application of these materials, viz. health, food, agriculture, and textiles.
