Cyclotriphosphazene: A Versatile Building Block for Diverse Functional Materials

Cyclotriphosphazene (CP) is a cyclic inorganic compound with the chemical formula N3P3. This unique molecule consists of a six-membered ring composed of alternating nitrogen and phosphorus atoms, each bonded to two chlorine atoms. CP exhibits remarkable versatility and significance in the realm of materials chemistry due to its easy functionalization via facile nucleophilic substitution reactions in mild conditions as well as intriguing properties of resultant final CP-based molecules or polymers. CP has been served as an important building block for numerous functional materials. This review provides a general and broad overview of the synthesis of CP-based small molecules through nucleophilic substitution of hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP), and their applications, including flame retardants, liquid crystals (LC), chemosensors, electronics, biomedical materials, and lubricants, have been summarized and discussed. It would be expected that this review would offer a timely summary of various CP-based materials and hence give an insight into further exploration of CP-based molecules in the future.

Recent progress on polymerization-induced emission

The aggregate luminescence behaviors of polymeric luminescent materials have been attracting great attention. However, the importance of the polymerization process on luminescence, namely, polymerization-induced emission (PIE), has rarely been overviewed. In this review, recent advances in polymerization with PIE effects are summarized, including PIE with aromatic rings based on one-/two-/multi-component polymerizations, and PIE without aromatic rings according to disparate mechanisms of polymerizations. Typical examples are selected to elaborate the basic design principles, as well as the properties and potential applications of the luminous polymers. Moreover, the challenges and perspectives in this area are also discussed.

Polymers and Polymer-Based Materials for the Detection of (Nitro-)explosives

Methods for the remote detection of warfare agents and explosives have been in high demand in recent times. Among the several detection methods, fluorescence methods appear to be more convenient due to their low cost, simple operation, fast response time, and naked-eye-visible sensory response. For fluorescence methods, a large variety of fluorescent materials, such as small-molecule-based fluorophores, aggregation-induced emission fluorophores/materials, and supramolecular systems, have been reported in the literature. Among them, fluorescent (bio)polymers/(bio)polymer-based materials have gained wide attention due to their excellent mechanical properties and sensory performance, their ability to recognize explosives via different sensing mechanisms and their combinations, and, finally, the so-called amplification of the sensory response. This review provides the most up-to-date data on the utilization of polymers and polymer-based materials for the detection of nitroaromatic compounds (NACs)/nitro-explosives (NEs) in the last decade. The literature data have been arranged depending on the polymer type and/or sensory mechanism.

Aggregation-Induced Emission-Active Nanostructures: Beyond Biomedical Applications

The discovery of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomenon in 2001 has had a significant impact on materials development across different research disciplines. AIE-active materials have been widely exploited for various applications in optoelectronics, sensing, biomedical, and stimuli-responsive systems, etc. This is made possible by integrating AIE features with other fields of science and engineering, such as nanoscience and nanotechnology. AIE has been extensively employed, particularly for biomedical applications, such as biosensing, bioimaging, and theranostics. However, development of AIE-based nanotechnology for other applications is comparatively less, although there have been increasing research activities in recent years. Given the significance and potential of the marriage between AIE hallmark and nanotechnology in AIE-active materials development, this review article summarizes and showcases the latest research efforts in AIE-based nanomaterials, including nanomaterials synthesis and their nonbiomedical applications, such as sensing, optoelectronics, functional coatings, and stimuli-responsive systems. A perspective on the outlook of AIE-based nanostructured materials and relevant nanotechnology for nonbiomedical applications will be provided, giving an insight into how to design AIE-active nanostructures as well as their applications beyond the biomedical domain.

Aggregation-Induced Emission Boosting the Study of Polymer Science

The past one hundred years witness the great development of polymer science. The advancement of polymer science is closely related with the developing of characterization techniques and methods, from viscometry in molecular weight determination to advanced techniques including differential scanning calorimetry, nuclear magnetic resonance and scanning electron microscopy. However, these techniques are normally constrained to tedious sample preparation, high cost, harsh experimental condition, or ex-situ characterization. Fluorescence technology has the merits of high sensitivity and direct visualization. Contrary to conventional aggregation-causing quenching fluorophores, those dyes with aggregation-induced emission characteristic show high emission efficiency in aggregate states. Based on the restriction of intramolecular motions for AIE properties, the AIE materials are very sensitive to the surrounding microenvironments owing to the twisted propeller-like structures and therefore reveal great potentials in polymer's study. The AIE concept has been successfully used in polymer's study and provides us a deeper understanding on polymer structure and properties. In this review, the applications of AIEgens in polymer science for visualizing polymerization, glass transition, dissolution, crystallization, gelation, self-assembly, phase separation, cracking and self-healing were exemplified and summarized. Cationic Conjugated Polyelectrolytes with Aggregation-Induced Ratiometric Fluorescence

The molecular diversity of aggregation-induced emission remains to be challenging due to the limitation of conventional synthesis methods. Here, a series of novel neutral and cationic conjugated polymers composed with various ratios of tetraarylethylene (TAE) containing a bridged oxygen (O) and fluorene (F) units are designed and synthesized via the geminal cross-coupling (GCC) of 1,1-dibromoolefins. The incorporation of TAE segments into the conjugated backbone of polyfluorene produces pronounced aggregation-induced ratiometric fluorescence (AIRF), i.e., aggregation-induced emission (AIE) at 520-600 nm grows synergistically with aggregations-caused quenching (ACQ) at 400-450 nm. The content of fluorene unit in the polymer backbones determines the intensity of the initial fluorescence at blue light region. The huge distinction (about 150 nm) in dual emission wavelengths caused by the environment change makes these conjugated polyelectrolytes particularly suitable for ratiometric fluorescence sensing. Based on electrostatic interaction mechanism, the gradual addition of heparin into the cationic conjugated polymers aqueous solutions could induce dual-color fluorescence changes with a detection limit of 9 nM. Self-Assembled Photonic Microsensors with Strong Aggregation-Induced Emission for Ultra-Trace Quantitative Detection

Ultratrace quantitative detection based on fluorescence is highly desirable for many important applications such as environmental monitoring or disease diagnosis, which however has remained a great challenge because of limited and irregular fluorescence responses to analytes at ultralow concentrations. Herein the problem is circumvented via local enrichment and detection of analytes within a microsensor, that is, photonic porous microspheres grafted with aggregation-induced emission gens (AIEgens). The obtained microspheres exhibit dual structural and molecular functions, namely, bright structural colors and strong fluorescence. Large fluorescence quenching induced by nitrophenol compounds in an aqueous environment is observed at ultralow concentrations (10^-12-10^-8 mol/L), enabling quantitative detection at a ppb level (ng/L). This is achieved within a porous structure with good connectivity between the nanopores to improve analyte diffusion, an internal layer of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) for analyte enrichment via hydrogen bonding, and homogeneous distribution of AIEgens within the PEO layer for enhanced fluorescence quenching. The fluorescent porous microspheres can be readily obtained in a single step templated by well-ordered water-in-oil-in-water double emulsion droplets with AIE amphiphilic bottlebrush block copolymers as the effective stabilizer.

Aggregation-Induced Emission Properties in Fully π-Conjugated Polymers, Dendrimers, and Oligomers

Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE) in organic molecules has recently attracted the attention of the scientific community because of their potential applications in different fields. Compared to small molecules, little attention has been paid to polymers and oligomers that exhibit AIE, despite having excellent properties such as high emission efficiency in aggregate and solid states, signal amplification effect, good processability and the availability of multiple functionalization sites. In addition to these features, if the molecular structure is fully conjugated, intramolecular electronic interactions between the composing chromophores may appear, thus giving rise to a wealth of new photophysical properties. In this review, we focus on selected fully conjugated oligomers, dendrimers and polymers, and briefly summarize their synthetic routes, fluorescence properties and potential applications. An exhaustive comparison between spectroscopic results in solution and aggregates or in solid state has been collected in almost all examples, and an opinion on the future direction of the field is briefly stated.

Functional Polymer Systems with Aggregation-Induced Emission and Stimuli Responses

Functional polymer systems with stimuli responses have attracted great attention over the years due to their diverse range of applications. Such polymers are capable of altering their chemical and/or physical properties, such as chemical structures, chain conformation, solubility, shape, morphologies, and optical properties, in response to single or multiple stimuli. Among various stimuli-responsive polymers, those with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties possess the advantages of high sensitivity, fast response, large contrast, excellent photostability, and low background noise. The changes in fluorescence signal can be conveniently detected and monitored using portable instruments. The integration of AIE and stimuli responses into one polymer system provides a feasible and effective strategy for the development of smart polymers with high sensitivity to environmental variations. Here, we review the recent advances in the design, preparation, performance, and applications of functional synthetic polymer systems with AIE and stimuli responses. Various AIE-based polymer systems with responsiveness toward single physical or chemical stimuli as well as multiple stimuli are summarized with specific examples. The current challenges and perspectives on the future development of this research area will also be discussed at the end of this review.

AIEgens: An emerging fluorescent sensing tool to aid food safety and quality control

As a global public health problem, food safety has attracted increasing concern. To minimize the risk exposure of food to harmful ingredients, food quality and safety inspection that covers the whole process of "from farm to fork" is much desired. Fluorescent sensing is a promising and powerful screening tool for sensing hazardous substances in food and thus plays a crucial role in promoting food safety assurance. However, traditional fluorphores generally suffer the problem of aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect, which limit their application in food quality and safety inspection. In this regard, luminogens with aggregation-induced emission property (AIEgens) showed large potential in food analysis since AIEgens effectively surmount the ACQ effect with much better detection sensitivity, accuracy, and robustness. In this contribution, we review the latest developments of food safety monitoring by AIEgens, which will focus on the molecular design of AIEgens and their sensing principles. Several examples of AIE-based sensing applications for screening food contaminations are highlighted, and future perspectives and challenges in this emerging field are tentatively elaborated. We hope this review can motivate new research ideas and interest to aid food safety and quality control, and facilitate more collaborative endeavors to advance the state-of-the-art sensing developments and reduce actual translational gap between laboratory research and industrial production.

Detection of Nitroaromatics by Pyrene-Labeled Starch Nanoparticles

Starch nanoparticles (SNPs) were hydrophobically modified by using 1-pyrenebutyric acid (PyBA) with degrees of substitution (DS) between 0.0006 and 0.11. Fluorescence quenching studies were conducted on the pyrene-labeled starch nanoparticles (Py-SNPs) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and water with nitromethane (NM), 4-mononitrotoluene (MNT), 2,6-dinitrotoluene (DNT), and 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) to assess the mode of quenching of the pyrene labels in the two solvents. In DMSO where pyrene, starch, and the quenchers were soluble, a decrease in fluorescence signal was the result of dynamic encounters between the excited pyrene labels and the nitrated quenchers. In water where starch could be dispersed but pyrene and the nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) were sparingly soluble, quenching took place through the binding of NACs to pyrene aggregates. Py(11)-SNPs (Py-SNPs with a DS of 0.11)-coated filter papers (Py-CFPs) were prepared as fluorescence sensors. The fluorescence emitted by Py-CFPs was quenched to 25% of its original value within 10 ± 2, 72 ± 20, and 23 ± 4 s upon exposure to vapors of MNT, DNT, and TNT, respectively. When known amounts of NACs were deposited onto Py-CFPs, their limit of detection (LOD) when the fluorescence decreased by more than 3 standard deviations (3σ) from its original value equaled 9.2 ± 0.8, 3.3 ± 0.5, and 0.20 ± 0.02 ng/mm² for MNT, DNT, and TNT, respectively. These response times and LODs were among the best values reported to date in the scientific literature for fluorescence sensors. The selectivity of the Py-CFPs toward NACs was also investigated by comparing their response to the presence of non-nitrated aromatics, amines, and aromatic ketones. Quenching was only observed with the latter family of chemicals tested, but with much lower efficiency compared to TNT, thus reflecting some level of selectivity toward this specific NAC.

Multimodal Fluorescent Polymer Sensor for Highly Sensitive Detection of Nitroaromatics

Detection of nitroaromatic explosives with high sensitivity and selectivity is extremely important for civilian and military safety. Here, we report the synthesis and multimodal sensing applications of an emissive alanine based dansyl tagged copolymer P(MMA-co-Dansyl-Ala-HEMA) (DCP), synthesized by RAFT copolymerization. The fluorescent co-polymer exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity towards conventional nitroaromatic explosives such as DNT, TNT and TNP in solution at lower range of µM level and also with saturated vapor of NACs. The quantum yield of the co-polymer was measured to be very high (Φf = 77%) which make it an ideal candidate for sensing in solution as well as in vapor phase. The fluorescence signal from DCP copolymer gets significantly quenched upon addition of aliquots of DNT, TNT, and TNP. The Stern-Volmer constant was calculated to be very high. The quenching mechanism was further established by fluorescence up-conversion, time-resolved fluorescence and steady state absorption spectroscopy. The energetics of sensing process was calculated by Density Functional Theory (DFT) studies. We also fabricate a thin film polymer sensor which was able to detect nitroaromatic vapors with high selectivity. This opens up the possibility of building a low-cost and light-weight nitroaromatic explosives sensor for field use.

Construction of Functional Hyperbranched Poly(phenyltriazolylcarboxylate)s by Metal-Free Phenylpropiolate-Azide Polycycloaddition

The 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of activated internal alkynes with azides has been developed into an efficient polymerization reaction for constructing functional linear 1,4,5-trisubstitued polytriazoles. However, it is rarely employed for the synthesis of hyperbranched polymers. In this work, metal-free polycycloadditions of tris(3-phenylpropiolate)s (1) and tetraphenylethene-containing diazides (2) are performed in dimethylformamide at 100 °C for 7 and 12 h, producing hyperbranched poly(phenyltriazolylcarboxylate)s (hb-PPTCs) with high molecular weights and satisfactory regioregularities in good yields. The hb-PPTCs have good solubility in common organic solvents and high thermal stability. They are non-emissive in solutions, but emit intensively upon aggregation, showing an aggregation-induced emission effect. Their aggregates can work as fluorescent sensors for explosive detection with high sensitivity. Furthermore, the polymers can be utilized for the fabrication of 2D fluorescent patterns with high resolution by UV irradiation through copper grid masks.

Receptor-Free Detection of Picric Acid: A New Structural Approach for Designing Aggregation-Induced Emission Probes

A pristine aggregation-induced enhanced emission (AIEE) active monomer 2,5-bis(( E)-4-bromostyryl)-3,4-diphenylthiophene (TPBZ) and its copolymer (PFTPBZ) with 9,9-dioctylfluorene-2,7-diboronic acid bis(1,3-propandiol) ester have been synthesized via Suzuki coupling polymerization. PFTPBZ that is devoid of any receptor showed AIEE property and demonstrated excellent and selective fluorometric recognition of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) in aggregated state (aqueous medium) and picric acid (PA) in aggregated state and solution state (organic solvent) as well as in vapor phase via PFTPBZ dip-coated Whatman filter paper on a solid-phase platform in 1.86 ng level (naked eye). Limit of detection (LOD) for TNT in 95% water fraction ( f_w) was 53.74 × 10^-6 M, and at 40% f_w, it was 14.26 × 10^-7 M. PA detection in tetrahydrofuran solution was possible with a LOD of 28.16 × 10^-7 M, 95% f_w with LOD of 10.47 × 10^-6 M, and in 40% f_w with LOD of 47.39 × 10^-8 M. As a unique example of structural design, the probe PFTPBZ surprisingly possesses no receptor, yet remarkably high selectivity was achieved via Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) and photoinduced electron transfer from the copolymer PFTPBZ to PA and TNT. Detection of PA in the presence of various metal analytes and inorganic acids in real water samples (lakes, rivers, and sea water) was also demonstrated using this concept of receptor-free conjugated polymer probe.

Conjugated polymers containing tetraphenylethylene in the backbones and side-chains for highly sensitive TNT detection

The novel polytriphenylamines derivatives PTPA1-TPE and PTPA2-TPE with TPE as side groups and bis(tert-butyl)-TPE in the backbones have been successfully synthesized via Yamamoto-type coupling under microwave heating. The incorporation of TPE units in the backbones and side-chains endows the polymers with a distinct AIE effect and high fluorescence quantum yields in the solid state. Meanwhile, nitroaromatic explosive detection based on dispersed, electron-rich PTPA1-TPE and PTPA2-TPE nanoaggregates in THF/water was carried out. Both of them show high sensitivity towards the TNT analyte, with a maximum Stern-Volmer quenching constant K sv of up to 8.3 × 104 M-1. In addition, the paper strip test demonstrates the promising practical application of the polymers as solid state sensors towards PL-based nitroaromatic explosive detection.

Novel Hydrogen-Bonding Cross-Linking Aggregation-Induced Emission: Water as a Fluorescent "Ribbon" Detected in a Wide Range

The development of efficient sensors for detection of the water content in a wide detection range is highly desirable for balance in many industrial processes and products. Presented herein are six novel different substituted Schiff base Zn(II) complexes, which exhibit the remarkable capability to detect traces of water in a wide linear range (most can reach 0-94%, v/v), low detection limit of 0.2% (v/v), and rapid response time of 8 s in various organic solvents by virtue of an unusual water-activated hydrogen-bonding cross-linking AIE (WHCAIE) mechanism. As a proof-of-concept, the WHCAIE mechanism is explained well by single X-ray diffraction, absorption spectra, fluorescence spectra, dynamic light scattering, ¹H NMR spectra, and theoretical calculations. In addition, the molecules demonstrated their application for the detection of humidity (42-80%). These Schiff base Zn(II) complexes become one of the most powerful water sensors known due to their extraordinary sensitivity, fast response, and wide detection range for water.
