Abstract
Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), aliphatic polyesters synthesized by microorganisms, have gained considerable attention as biodegradable plastics. Recently, α-carbon-methylated PHAs have been shown to exhibit several interesting properties that differ from those of conventional PHAs, such as their crystallization behavior and material properties. This study investigated α-carbon methylated (S)- and (R)-3-hydroxy-2-methylpropionate (3H2MP) as new repeating units. 3H2MP units were homopolymerized or copolymerized with (R)-3-hydroxybutyrate (3HB) by manipulating the culture conditions of recombinant Escherichia coli LSBJ. Consequently, PHAs with 3H2MP units ranging from 5 to 100 mol % were synthesized by external addition of (R)- and (S)-enantiomers or the racemic form of 3H2MPNa. The (S)-3H2MP precursor supplemented into the culture medium was almost directly polymerized into PHA while maintaining its chirality. Therefore, a highly isotactic P(3H2MP) (R:S = 1:99) was synthesized, which displayed a melting temperature of 114-119 °C and a relatively high enthalpy of fusion (68 J/g). In contrast, in cultures supplemented with (R)-3H2MP, the precursor was racemized and polymerized into PHA, resulting in the synthesis of the amorphous polymer atactic P(3H2MP) (R:S = 40:60). However, racemization was not observed at a low concentration of the (R)-3H2MP precursor, thereby synthesizing P(3HB-co-8 mol % 3H2MP) with 100% (R)-3H2MP units. The thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the thermal degradation temperatures at 5% weight loss of P(3H2MP)s occurred at approximately 313 °C, independent of tacticity, which is substantially higher than that of P(3HB) (257 °C). This study demonstrates a new concept for controlling the physical properties of biosynthesized PHA by manipulating the polymers' tacticity using 3H2MP units.

Abstract
Selective formation of stereocomplex (sc) crystallization in enantiomeric poly(L-lactic acid)/poly(D-lactic acid) (PLLA/PDLA) blends is considered as one of the most effective and promising way to improve the mechanical and thermal properties of polylactide (PLA) materials. However, homocrystallization (hc) prevails over sc crystallization in high-molecular-weight (HMW) PLLA/PDLA blends. Herein, we propose a simple and straightforward approach for fabricating sc crystallization and suppress hc crystallization for HMW PLLA/PDLA blends through the addition of C70 as a nucleator. Non-isothermal crystallization and wide-angel X-ray diffraction studies demonstrate that, the incorporation of 1 wt% C70 overwhelmingly leads to the formation of sc crystallites, while preventing the formation of hc crystallites. Isothermal crystallization experiments at 140 °C reveal a significant reduction in the half-crystallization period of the PLLA/PDLA blend upon the addition of C70. Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy suggests that, the improved intermolecular interactions between PLLA and PDLA chains, as well as the inhibition of molecular chain diffusion and mobility, contribute to the accelerated formation of sc facilitated by C70. The enhanced sc crystallization results in a 15.5 °C higher thermal stability in the as-prepared PLLA/PDLA blend with 1 wt% C70 compared to the neat counterpart.

Abstract
Formation of stereocomplex crystals (SC) is an effective way to improve the heat resistance and mechanical performance of poly(lactic acid) products. However, at all but the slowest cooling rates, SC crystallization of a high-molecular-weight poly(l-lactic acid)/poly(d-lactic acid) (PLLA/PDLA) racemate stops at a high temperature or does not even start, leaving the remaining melt to crystallize into homochiral crystals (HC) or an SC-HC mixture on continuous cooling. To understand this intriguing phenomenon, we revisit the SC crystallization of both high- and low-molecular-weight PLLA/PDLA racemates. Based on differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), supplemented by optical microscopy and X-ray scattering, we concluded that what stops the growth of SC is the accumulation of the nearly pure enantiomer, either PDLA or PLLA, that is rejected from the SC ahead of its growth front. The excess enantiomer is a result of random compositional fluctuation present in the melt even if the average composition is 1:1. The situation is more favorable if the initial polymer is not fully molten or is brought up to just above the melting point where SC seeds remain, as proven by DSC and X-ray scattering. Moreover, we find that not only is SC growth poisoned by the locally pure enantiomer but also that at lower temperatures, the HC growth can be poisoned by the blend. This explains why SC growth, arrested at high temperatures, can resume at lower temperatures, along with the growth of HC. Furthermore, while some previous works attributed the incomplete SC crystallization to a problem of primary nucleation, we find that adding a specific SC-promoting nucleating agent does not help alleviate the problem of cessation of SC crystallization. This reinforces the conclusion that the main problem is in growth rather than in nucleation.

Substantially Enhanced Stereocomplex Crystallization of Poly(L-Lactide)/Poly(D-Lactide) Blends by the Formation of Multi-Arm Stereo-Block Copolymers. CRYSTALS 2022. Abstract
Stereocomplex-type polylactide (SC-PLA) created by alternate packing of poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) and poly(D-lactide) (PDLA) chains in a crystalline state has emerged as a growingly popular engineering bioplastic that possesses excellent hydrolytic stability and thermomechanical properties. However, it is extremely difficult to acquire high-performance SC-PLA products via melt-processing of high-molecular-weight PLLA/PDLA blends because both SC crystallites and homocrystallites (HCs) are competitively formed in the melt-crystallization. Herein, a facile yet powerful way was employed to boost SC formation by introducing trace amounts of some epoxy-functionalized small-molecule modifiers into the enantiomeric blends during reactive melt-blending. The results show that the SC formation is considerably enhanced with the in situ generation of multi-arm stereo-block PLA copolymers, based on the reaction between epoxy groups of the modifiers and hydroxyl end groups of PLAs. More impressively, it is intriguing to find that the introduction of only 0.5 wt% modifiers can induce exclusive SC formation in the blends upon isothermal and non-isothermal melt-crystallizations. The outstanding SC crystallizability might be attributed to the suppressing effect of such unique copolymers on the separation of the alternately arranged PLLA/PDLA chain segments in molten state as a compatibilizer. Furthermore, the generation of these copolymers does not result in a significant increase in melt viscosity of the blends. These findings suggest new opportunities for the high-throughput processing of SC-PLA materials into useful products.

Abstract
Poly (l-lactic acid) (PLLA) is a promising biomedical polymer material with a wide range of applications. The diverse enantiomeric forms of PLLA provide great opportunities for thermal and mechanical enhancement through stereocomplex formation. The addition of poly (d-lactic acid) (PDLA) as a nucleation agent and the formation of stereocomplex crystallization (SC) have been proven to be an effective method to improve the crystallization and mechanical properties of the PLLA. In this study, PLLA was blended with different amounts of PDLA through a melt blending process and their properties were calculated. The effect of the PDLA on the crystallization behavior, thermal, and mechanical properties of PLLA were investigated systematically by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), polarized optical microscopy (POM), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and tensile test. Based on our findings, SC formed easily when PDLA content was increased, and acts as nucleation sites. Both SC and homo crystals (HC) were observed in the PLLA/PDLA blends. As the content of PDLA increased, the degree of crystallization increased, and the mechanical strength also increased.

Abstract
The coordination chemistry and the activities in the ring-opening polymerization catalysis of racemic lactide (LA) of magnesium complexes of a series of {ONNN}-type sequential monoanionic ligands are described. All ligands include pyridyl and substituted-phenolate as peripheral groups. The ligands bearing either chiral or meso-bipyrrolidine cores led to single diastereomeric complexes, whereas the ligands bearing a diaminoethane core led to diastereomer mixtures. All {ONNN}Mg-X complexes [X=Cl, HMDS (hexamethyldisilazide)] led to highly active and isoselective catalysts. The complexes bearing the chiral bipyrrolidine core exhibited the highest activities (full consumption of 5000 equiv. of rac-LA at RT within 5 min) and highest isoselectivities (Pm =0.91), as well as a living character. The complexes of the meso-bipyrrolidine based ligands were almost as active and slightly less stereoselective, while those of the diaminoethane based ligands exhibited reduced activities and isoselectivities.

Abstract
Stereocomplex (SC) formation was reported for the first time for enantiomeric alternating copolymers consisting of repeating units with two types of chiral centers, poly(lactic acid-alt-2-hydroxybutanoic acid)s [P(LA-alt-2HB)s]. l,l-Configured poly(l-lactic acid-alt-l-2-hydroxybutanoic acid) [P(LLA-alt-l-2HB)] and d,d-configured poly(d-lactic acid-alt-d-2-hydroxybutanoic acid) [P(DLA-alt-d-2HB)] were amorphous. Blends of P(LLA-alt-l-2HB) and P(DLA-alt-d-2HB) were crystallizable and showed typical SC-type wide-angle X-ray diffraction profiles similar to those reported for stereocomplexed blends of poly(l-lactic acid) and poly(d-lactic acid) homopolymers and of poly(l-2-hydroxybutanoic acid) and poly(d-2-hydroxybutanoic acid) homopolymers, and of l,l-configured poly(l-lactic acid-co-l-2-hydroxybutanoic acid) [P(LLA-co-l-2HB)] and d,d-configured poly(d-lactic acid-co-d-2-hydroxybutanoic acid) [P(DLA-co-d-2HB)] random copolymers. The melting temperature values and melting enthalpy values at 100% crystallinity for stereocomplexed solvent-evaporated and precipitated P(LLA-alt-l-2HB)/P(DLA-alt-d-2HB) blends were correspondingly 187.5 and 187.9 °C, and 98.1 and 91.8 J g−1. Enantiomeric polymer blending of P(LLA-alt-l-2HB) and P(DLA-alt-d-2HB) can confer crystallizability by stereocomplexation and the biodegradable materials with a wide variety of physical properties and biodegradability are highly expected to be prepared by synthesis of alternating copolymers of various combinations of two types of chiral α-substituted 2-hydroxyalkanoic acid monomers and their SC crystallization. Stereocomplex formation was reported for alternating copolymers of chiral α-substituted 2-hydroxyalkanoic acids which can be utilized for preparation of biodegradable materials with a variety of physical properties and biodegradability.![]()

Abstract
Chloro-magnesium complexes of divergent tetradentate-monoanionic {ONNN}-type ligands which formed as either mononuclear or dinuclear complexes are reported. These complexes catalyze the ring-opening polymerization of lactide with high activity and in a living manner, and enable the synthesis of well-defined stereo-diblock copolymers with Mn > 200 kDa, as well as stereo-n-block copolymers (n = tri, tetra) with high molecular weights by sequential monomer addition. Thermal and crystallographic characterizations revealed that even the very high molecular weight PLA copolymers crystallized in a stereocomplex phase, and that their degradation temperature was as high as 354 °C.

Abstract
The current work focuses on the fabrication of high-molecular-weight stereocomplex poly(lactic acid)/nanohydroxyapatite (sPLA/n-HAP)-based bionanocomposite for three-dimensional (3D)-printed orthopedic implants and high-temperature engineering applications. To achieve the same, n-HAP is grafted with poly(d-lactic acid) (PDLA) via in situ ring-opening polymerization of d-lactide, followed by blending with poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA), which yields sPLA/n-HAP biocomposite with improved storage modulus even at temperatures higher than 140 °C. X-ray diffraction and calorimetric analysis ensure the presence of 100% stereocomplex crystallites of biocomposite along with significant improvement in the melting temperature (∼227 °C). Noteworthy improvements in the mechanical and gas-barrier properties of the developed biocomposites are achieved due to the uniform dispersion of n-HAP (∼60 nm) confirmed by morphological studies. An unusual improvement in elongation at break (∼130% at 1 wt % HAP loading) makes this composite a toughened material. However, the tensile strength is improved by ∼16%, whereas oxygen permeability and water vapor transmission rate are found to reduce by ∼48 and ∼34%, respectively. Interestingly, the developed material is processed as monofilament, followed to 3D printing to yield a middle phalanx bone as a representative example of orthopedic implants. In vitro studies reveal that cell adhesion and proliferation on the surface of the developed biocomposite support its biocompatible nature. This signifies the possible future aspects of the material in commercial biomedical and high-temperature engineering applications.

Abstract
Two-armed poly(l-lactide) (PLLA)-b-poly(d-lactide) (PDLA) (2-LD) copolymers with a wide-range of molecular weight were synthesized and the effect of coinitiator moiety, which functions as impurity and causes chain directional change in the middle of molecules (Effect A), and/or the additional effect of types of terminal groups (Effect B) on crystallization behavior of 2-LD copolymers were studied, in comparison with that reported for one-armed PLLA-b-PDLA (1-LD) copolymers. Formation of only stereocomplex (SC) crystallites in 2-LD and 1-LD copolymers indicates that neighboring PLLA and PDLA blocks facilitated SC crystallization and neither Effect A nor B affected the crystalline species. Effect A and/or B (both hydroxyl terminal groups) disturbed cold SC crystallization of 2-LD copolymers compared to that of 1-LD copolymers. Crystalline growth morphologies of 2-LD and 1-LD copolymers during cold SC crystallization were spherical and solid sheaf, respectively, exhibiting that crystalline growth morphology was influenced by Effects A and/or B. The melting temperature or crystalline thickness of SC crystallites were determined by number-average molecular weight per one block and not affected by Effect A or B. Maximum radial growth rates of spherulites of 2-LD copolymers compared to those of 1-LD copolymers were largely decreased by Effect A and/or B (both hydroxyl terminal groups).
