Fluoride releasing photothermal responsive TiO2 matrices for antibiosis, biosealing and bone regeneration

Peri-implantitis induced by infection leads to gingival recession, alveolar resorption and eventual dental implant failure. So, antibiosis and biosealing of abutments as well as osseointegration of roots need to be projected seriously during the whole service lifespan of dental implants. In this work, a multipurpose photothermal therapy strategy based on Si/P/F doped TiO2 matrix is proposed to address the above issues. This TiO2 matrix not only has outstanding photothermal response, but also triggers the release of F ions under near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation. Local hyperthermia assisted with the released F ions reduces adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis of staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), increases bacterial membrane permeability, and induces abundant of reactive oxygen species, resulting in the oxidation of cellular components and eventual death of bacteria. Furthermore, the synergic action of mild photothermal stimulation and Si/P/F ions of TiO2 matrix up-regulates gingival epithelial cells behavior (e.g., hemidesmosome formation) and osteoblasts response in vitro. In an infected model, this TiO2 matrix obviously eliminates bacteria, reduces inflammatory response, improves epithelial sealing and osseointegration, and reduces alveolar resorption by regulating NIR irradiation.

Determination of lindane in surface water samples and its degradation by hydrogen peroxide and persulfate assisted TiO2-based photocatalysis

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) have been used extensively as insecticides and herbicides. This study investigates the occurrence of lindane in surface water from the Peshawar valley (i.e., Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Mardan and Swabi districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan). Out of 75 samples tested (i.e., 15 samples from each district), 13 samples (including 2 from Peshawar, 3 from Charsadda, 4 from Nowshera, 1 from Mardan, and 3 from Swabi) are found to be contaminated with lindane. Overall, the detection frequency is 17.3%. The maximum concentration of lindane is detected in a water sample from Nowshera and found to be 2.60 μg L^-1. Furthermore, the degradation of lindane in the water sample from Nowshera, containing the maximum concentration, is investigated by simulated solar-light/TiO₂ (solar/TiO₂), solar/H₂O₂/TiO₂ and solar/persulfate/TiO₂ photocatalysis. The degradation of lindane by solar/TiO₂ photocatalysis is 25.77% after 10 h of irradiation. The efficiency of the solar/TiO₂ process is significantly increased in the presence of 500 μM H₂O₂ and 500 μM persulfate (PS) (separately), represented by 93.85 and 100.00% lindane removal, respectively. The degradation efficiency of lindane is lower in natural water samples as compared to Milli-Q water, attributed to water matrix effect. Moreover, the identification of degradation products (DPs) shows that lindane follows similar degradation pathways in natural water samples as the one in Milli-Q water. The results show that the occurrence of lindane in surface waters of Peshawar valley is a matter of great concern for human beings and the environment. Interestingly, H₂O₂ and PS assisted solar/TiO₂ photocatalysis is an effective method for the removal of lindane from natural water.

Facile Preparation and Characterization of Silica Nanoparticles from South Africa Fly Ash Using a Sol–Gel Hydrothermal Method

Silica nanoparticles (SNPs) consist of several applications which include lightweight aggregates, energy storage, and drug delivery. Nevertheless, the silica reagents used in SNP synthesis are both costly and hazardous. As a result, it is critical to look for other sources of silica. For this research, a simple sol–gel hydrothermal approach is used to make SNPs from South African fly ash (SAFA). SAFA is classified as fly ash class F according to X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis. The wide-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern reveals the structural composition of SAFA and the amorphous phase of extracted SNPs, while Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) examination reveals the presence of silanol and siloxane groups. Basic SNPs were generally spherical with diameters of about 60 nm, according to scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transition electron microscope (TEM) studies. The presence of SiO2 is confirmed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) spectrum analysis. Particle size assessment indicates particle sizes ranging from 48 nm to 87 nm in diameter, with a mean diameter of 67 nm. The application of SNPs in wastewater treatment demonstrated that they can be used to remove Cd2+ from an aqueous solution. This research offers new ideas for using South African fly ash in SNP manufacturing.

Highly efficient photocatalytic oxidation of antibiotic ciprofloxacin using TiO2@g-C3N4@biochar composite

In this present study, a novel indirect Z-scheme TiO₂@g-C₃N₄@biochar (TiO₂@g-C₃N₄@BC) composite photocatalyst was successfully fabricated and characterized with SEM, TEM, EDS, XRD, FTIR, PL, XPS, and UV-vis DRS. The photocatalytic degradation behavior of ciprofloxacin (CIP) on the TiO₂@g-C₃N₄@BC was evaluated under UV-vis and visible light irradiation, and the possible reaction mechanism of photocatalytic oxidation of CIP on the TiO₂@g-C₃N₄@BC was explained. The TiO₂@g-C₃N₄@BC composite photocatalyst exhibited stronger photocatalytic oxidation activity for CIP in comparison with TiO₂, g-C₃N₄, TiO₂@BC, and TiO₂@g-C₃N₄. After 60 min of UV-vis and visible light irradiation, the photocatalytic removal efficiency of CIP by TiO₂@g-C₃N₄@BC was 99.3 and 89.2%, respectively. The photocatalytic removal performance of CIP was affected by the initial concentration of CIP, catalyst dosage, and pH value. The composite photocatalyst presented excellent stability and reusability after five cycles. An indirect Z-scheme principle of the CIP photocatalytic oxidation reaction on TiO₂@g-C₃N₄@BC was clearly proposed, and the whole process of photocatalytic degradation was the results of the interaction between CIP and reactive active species (·O₂^-, h⁺, and ·OH), of which ·O₂^- is the main active substance. Four CIP degradation pathways were proposed. This work may provide an effective strategy to remove antibiotics in wastewater.

Visible-light induced activation of persulfate by self-assembled EHPDI/TiO2 photocatalyst toward efficient degradation of carbamazepine

Removal of pharmaceutical and personal care products from wastewater is very important in water treatment process. Combining photocatalysis with persulfate (PS) could be a good solvent for this problem. Novel perylene diimide derivative (EHPDI) was designed and synthesized. Furthermore, self-assembled EHPDI/TiO₂ composite photocatalyst (EPT) was prepared and applied in activating persulfate (PS) under visible light to enhance the photodegradation of pollutants. The presence of the alkyl side chain 2-ethylhexyl optimizes the self-assembly process, enabling the composite material to achieve high performance under low EHPDI loading. Various methods were used to detect the physical and chemical characteristics of EPT. Carbamazepine (CBZ) was chosen to be the model pollutant to study the removal efficiency of EPT/PS system under visible light. Within 30 min, 5.0 mg/L CBZ could be almost completely degraded, and the removal ratio of TOC was 75.2% within 60 min. The SO₄^-, OH, O₂^-, ¹O₂, and h⁺ were proved to be involved in the removal of CBZ by EPR and quenching experiments. Then, other typical pollutants were degraded by this EPT/PS system, demonstrating this system is suitable for degrading different pollutants. Besides, the degradation paths of CBZ were proposed by HPLC/MS. Finally, the EPT showed excellent recyclability and stability.

Ultradispersed titanium dioxide nanoparticles embedded in a three-dimensional graphene aerogel for high performance sulfur cathodes

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are regarded as one of the most promising energy storage technologies, however, their practical application is greatly limited by a series of sulfur cathode challenges such as the notorious "shuttle effect", low conductivity and large volume change. Here, we develop a facile hydrothermal method for the large scale synthesis of sulfur hosts consisting of three-dimensional graphene aerogel with tiny TiO₂ nanoparticles (5-10 nm) uniformly dispersed on the graphene sheet (GA-TiO₂). The obtained GA-TiO₂ composites have a high surface area of ∼360 m² g^-1 and a hierarchical porous structure, which facilitates the encapsulation of sulfur in the carbon matrix. The resultant GA-TiO₂/S composites exhibit a high initial discharge capacity of 810 mA h g^-1 with an ultralow capacity fading of 0.054% per cycle over 700 cycles at 2C, and a high rate (5C) performance (396 mA h g^-1). Such architecture design paves a new way to synthesize well-defined sulfur hosts to tackle the challenges for high performance Li-S batteries.

Design of Ag/ and Pt/TiO2-SiO2 nanomaterials for the photocatalytic degradation of phenol under solar irradiation

The design of hybrid mesoporous TiO₂-SiO₂ (TS1) materials decorated with Ag and Pt nanoparticles was performed. The photocatalytic degradation of phenol under artificial solar irradiation was studied and the activity and selectivity of the intermediate products were verified. TiO₂-SiO₂ was prepared by sol-gel method while Ag- and Pt-based photocatalysts (TS1-Ag and TS1-Pt) were prepared by photodeposition of the noble metals on TS1. Two series of photocatalysts were prepared varying Ag and Pt contents (0.5 and 1.0 wt%). An increase in the photocatalytic activity up to two and five times higher than TS1 was found on TS1-Ag-1.0 and TS1-Pt-1.0, respectively. Changes in the intermediate products were detected on Ag- and Pt-based photocatalysts with an increase in the catechol formation up to 3.3 and 6.6 times higher than that observed on TS1, respectively. A two-parallel reaction mechanism for the hydroquinone and catechol formation is proposed. A linear correlation between the photocatalytic activity and the surface concentration of noble metals was found indicating that the electron affinity of noble metals is the driven force for both the increase in the photoactivity and for the remarkable changes in the selectivity of products.

Visible-light-induced photo-Fenton process for the facile degradation of metronidazole by Fe/Si codoped TiO2

This work investigated the feasibility and efficiency of a heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst, Fe/Si codoped TiO₂, for the degradation of metronidazole (MNZ) under visible light irradiation. The Fe/Si codoped TiO₂ was prepared via a facile and simple sol–gel solvothermal process followed by annealing at 480 °C for 4 hours. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements revealed that the photo-Fenton process did not change the structure, textural and surface morphologies of this catalyst. Elemental mapping results indicated the good dispersion of Fe and Si ions in TiO₂. Nitrogen adsorption and desorption measurements indicated that Si doping increased the surface area of the catalysts. The Fe and Si doping narrowed the band gap of TiO₂. They also facilitated the transfer of photo-generated electrons from TiO₂ to Fe(iii). Under visible light irradiation and the optimum operating conditions, MNZ could be completely degraded in 50 min by this catalyst within a wide pH range. Hydroxyl radicals and holes were verified to be responsible for degrading MNZ. The leaching of iron ions was less than 0.047 ppm even after illuminating the catalyst for 6 hours, indicating the good stability of the Fe/Si codoped TiO₂. The as-prepared catalysts with excellent catalytic activity, and remarkable reusability and stability could provide a new insight into the preparation of photocatalysts and have wide applications for antibiotics removal.
