Bulk and surface theoretical investigation of Nb-doped δ-FeOOH as a promising bifunctional catalyst

The development of bifunctional catalysts is of great interest in fine chemistry, since they are capable of promoting multicatalytic reactions involved in several important industrial processes. Iron oxyhydroxides have been identified as low-cost bifunctional catalysts. However, their applications are limited due to their weak acid character. Thus, elaborated modifications of these systems can significantly contribute to increasing their activities and selectivity. This work consists in the study, through DFT calculations, of the properties of the bulk and the surface of feroxyhyte (δ-FeOOH) doped with niobium, as a potential bifunctional catalyst. We identified the formation of stronger van der Waals interactions among the doped δ-FeOOH layers, which can increase the thermal stability of the catalyst. In addition, evidence has been found that the insertion of Nb increases Brönsted acidity and gives rise to new Lewis acid sites on the catalyst surface.

Recent advances in Cu-Fenton systems for the treatment of industrial wastewaters: Role of Cu complexes and Cu composites

Cu-based Fenton systems have been recognized as a promising suite of technologies for the treatment of industrial wastewaters due to their high catalytic oxidation capacity. Rapid progress regarding Cu Fenton systems has been made not only in fundamental mechanistic aspects of these systems but also with regard to applications over the past decade. Based on available literature, this review synthesizes the recent advances regarding both the understanding and applications of Cu-based Fenton processes for industrial wastewater treatment. Cu-based catalysts that are essential to the effectiveness of use of Cu Fenton reactions for oxidation of target species are mainly classified into two types: (i) Cu complexes with organic or inorganic ligands, and (ii) Cu composites with inorganic materials. Performance of the Cu-based catalysts for the removal of organic pollutants in industrial wastewaters are reviewed, with the key operating parameters illustrated. Furthermore, the roles of Cu complexes and composites in both homogeneous and heterogeneous Cu-Fenton systems are critically examined with particular focus on the mechanisms involved. Perspectives and future efforts needed for Cu-based Fenton systems using Cu complexes and composites for industrial wastewater treatment are presented.

Simultaneous degradation of the anticancer drugs 5-fluorouracil and cyclophosphamide using a heterogeneous photo-Fenton process based on copper-containing magnetites (Fe3-xCuxO4)

The effect of substitution of iron by copper in the magnetite lattice was investigated in terms of the catalytic activity in the heterogeneous photo-Fenton process. The physicochemical properties of the Fe_3-xCu_xO₄ nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (WD-XRF), specific surface area measurements, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Copper-modified magnetite showed higher catalytic activity for H₂O₂ conversion to HO^• (estimated using 7-hydroxycoumarin), compared to pristine magnetite (Fe₃O₄). Consequently, improved degradation of the anticancer drugs 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and cyclophosphamide (CP) was observed, with high efficiencies achieved using Fe_2.75Cu_0.25O₄ (0.125 g L^-1) and 15 mmol L^-1 H₂O₂, at pH 6.5, which resulted in complete degradation of 7.7 μmol L^-1 5-FU and CP after 150 min. Low leaching of Cu and Fe demonstrated the stability of the catalyst in the Fenton process, with high catalytic activity (>90%) maintained after use in 4 cycles. The addition of radical scavengers such as methanol, tert-butanol and iodide ions indicated that surface-bonded hydroxyl radicals played a major role in the degradation of 5-FU and CP in the Fe_3-xCu_xO₄/H₂O₂ system. The substitution of octahedral Fe(II) sites of the magnetite lattice by Cu(II) and the partial oxidation of Cu(I) to Cu(II) and Fe(II) to Fe(III) on the catalyst surface after the Fenton reaction were confirmed by analysis of the XPS spectra.
