Synthesis of Structure-Adjustable R-Au/Pt-CdS Nanohybrids with Strong Plasmon Coupling and Improved Photothermal Conversion Performance

Noble metal nanomaterials with a localized surface plasmon resonance effect exhibit outstanding advantages in areas such as photothermal therapy and photocatalysis. As a unique plasmonic metal nanostructure, gold nanobipyramids have been attracting much interest due to their strong specific local electric field intensity, large optical cross sections, and high refractive index sensitivity. In this study, we propose a novel three-component hetero-nanostructure composed of rough gold nanobipyramids (R-Au NBPs), Pt, and CdS. Initially, purified gold nanobipyramids are regrown to form R-Au NBPs that have a certain degree of roughness. These R-Au NBP substrates with a rough surface provide more hotspots and strengthen the intensity of localized electric fields. Subsequently, Pt and CdS nanoparticles are selectively deposited onto the surface of R-Au NBPs. Pt nanoparticles can provide more active sites. Each component of this hetero-nanostructure directly contacts others, creating multiple electron transfer channels. This novel design allows for tunable localized plasmon resonance wavelengths ranging from the visible to near-infrared regions. These factors contribute to the final superior photothermal conversion performance of the R-Au/Pt-CdS nanohybrids. Under the irradiation of near-infrared light (1064 nm), the photothermal conversion efficiency of R-Au/Pt-CdS reached 38.88%, which is 4.49, 1.5, and 1.22 times higher than that of Au NBPs, R-Au NBPs, and R-Au NBPs/Pt, respectively.

Effect of plasmonic excitation on mature insulin amyloid fibrils

Interactions between amyloid protein structures and nanomaterials have been extensively studied to develop effective inhibitors of amyloid aggregation. Limited investigations are reported on the impact of nanoparticles on mature fibrils. In this work, gold nanoparticles are used as photothermal agents to alter insulin fibrils. To this end, gold colloids bearing a negatively charged capping shell, with an average diameter of 14 nm and a plasmon resonance maximum at 520 nm are synthesized. The effects on mature insulin fibril morphology and structure upon plasmonic excitation of the nanoparticles-fibril samples have been monitored by spectroscopic and microscopic methods. The obtained data indicate that an effective destruction of the amyloid aggregates occur upon irradiation of the plasmonic nanoparticles, allowing the development of emerging strategies to alter the structure of amyloid fibrils.

Overview of Solar Steam Devices from Materials and Structures

The global shortage of freshwater supply has become an imminent problem. The high energy consumption of traditional desalination technology cannot meet the demand for sustainable energy development. Therefore, exploring new energy sources to obtain pure water has become one of the effective ways to solve the freshwater resource crisis. In recent years, solar steam technology which utilizes solar energy as the sole input source for photothermal conversion has shown to be sustainable, low-cost, and environmentally friendly, providing a viable low-carbon solution for freshwater supply. This review summarizes the latest developments in solar steam generators. The working principle of steam technology and the types of heating systems are described. The photothermal conversion mechanisms of different materials are illustrated. Emphasis is placed on describing strategies to optimize light absorption and improve steam efficiency from material properties to structural design. Finally, challenges in the development of solar steam devices are pointed out, aiming to provide new ideas for the development of solar steam devices and alleviate the shortage of freshwater resources.

Omnidirectionally irradiated three-dimensional molybdenum disulfide decorated hydrothermal pinecone evaporator for solar-thermal evaporation and photocatalytic degradation of wastewaters

Although most solar steam generation devices are effective in desalinating seawater and purifying wastewaters with heavy metal ions, they are ineffective in degrading organic pollutants from wastewaters. Herein, we design novel solar-driven water purification devices by decoration of three-dimensional pinecones with MoS₂ nanoflowers via a one-step hydrothermal synthesis for generating clean water. The vertically arrayed channels in the central rachis and the unique helically arranged scales of the hydrothermal pinecone can not only transfer bulk water upward to the evaporation surface, but also absorb more solar light from different incident angles for solar-thermal evaporation and photodegradation of wastewaters under omnidirectional irradiations. The decorated MoS₂ nanoflowers can not only enhance the solar-thermal energy conversion efficiency, but also decompose organic pollutants in the bulk water by their photocatalytic degradation effects. The resultant hydrothermal pinecone with in situ decorated MoS₂ (HPM) evaporator exhibits a high evaporation rate of 1.85 kg m^-2 h^-1 under 1-sun irradiation with a high energy efficiency of 96 %. During the solar-driven water purification processes, the powdery HPM can also photodegrade organic pollutants of methylene blue and rhodamine B with high removal efficiencies of 96 % and 95 %, respectively. For practical demonstration, by floating in the methylene blue solution under 1-sun irradiation, the bulky HPM can generate clean water by simultaneous solar-thermal evaporation and photocatalytic degradation. The integration of solar steam generation and photocatalytic degradation mechanisms makes the HPM evaporator highly promising for practical high-yield purification of wastewaters.

Plasmonic nanotechnology for photothermal applications - an evaluation

The application of plasmonic nanoparticles is motivated by the phenomenon of surface plasmon resonance. Owing to the tunability of optothermal properties and enhanced stability, these nanostructures show a wide range of applications in optical sensors, steam generation, water desalination, thermal energy storage, and biomedical applications such as photothermal (PT) therapy. The PT effect, that is, the conversion of absorbed light to heat by these particles, has led to thriving research regarding the utilization of plasmonic nanoparticles for a myriad of applications. The design of conventional nanomaterials for PT conversion has focussed predominantly on the manipulation of photon absorption through bandgap engineering, doping, incorporation, and modification of suitable matrix materials. Plasmonic nanomaterials offer an alternative and attractive approach in this regard, through the flexibility in the excitation of surface plasmons. Specific advantages are the considerable improved bandwidth of the absorption, a higher efficiency of photon absorption, facile tuning, as well as flexibility in the synthesis of plasmonic nanomaterials. This review of plasmonic PT (PPT) research begins with a theoretical discussion on the plasmonic properties of nanoparticles by means of the quasi-static approximation, Mie theory, Gans theory, generic simulations on common plasmonic material morphologies, and the evaluation processes of PT performance. Further, a variety of nanomaterials and material classes that have potential for PPT conversion are elucidated, such as plasmonic metals, bimetals, and metal-metal oxide nanocomposites. A detailed investigation of the essential, but often ignored, concept of thermal, chemical, and aggregation stability of nanoparticles is another part of this review. The challenges that remain, as well as prospective directions and chemistries, regarding nanomaterials for PT conversion are pondered on in the final section of the article, taking into account the specific requirements from different applications.

Plasmonic Phenomena in Membrane Distillation

Water scarcity raises important concerns with respect to human sustainability and the preservation of important ecosystem functions. To satisfy water requirements, seawater desalination represents one of the most sustainable solutions. In recent decades, membrane distillation has emerged as a promising thermal desalination process that may help to overcome the drawbacks of traditional desalination processes. Nevertheless, in membrane distillation, the temperature at the feed membrane interface is significantly lower than that of the bulk feed water, due to the latent heat flux associated with water evaporation. This phenomenon, known as temperature polarization, in membrane distillation is a crucial issue that could be responsible for a decay of about 50% in the initial transmembrane water flux. The use of plasmonic nanostructures, acting as thermal hotspots in the conventional membranes, may improve the performance of membrane distillation units by reducing or eliminating the temperature polarization problem. Furthermore, an efficient conversion of light into heat offers new opportunities for the use of solar energy in membrane distillation. This work summarizes recent developments in the field of plasmonic-enhanced solar evaporation with a particular focus on solar-driven membrane distillation applications and its potential prospects.

Ultraminiature optical fiber-tip directly-printed plasmonic biosensors for label-free biodetection

Miniaturization of biosensors has become an imperative demand because of its great potential in in vivo biomarker detection and disease diagnostics as well as the point-of-care testing for coping with public health crisis, such as the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Here, we present an ultraminiature optical fiber-tip biosensor based on the plasmonic gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) directly printed upon the end face of a standard multimode optical fiber at visible light range. An in-situ precision photoreduction technology is developed to additively print the micropatterns of size-controlled AuNPs. The AuNPs reveal distinct localized surface plasmon resonance, whose peak wavelength provides an ideal spectral signal for label-free biodetection. The fabricated optical fiber-tip plasmonic biosensor can not only detect antibody, but also test SARS-CoV-2 mimetic DNA sequence at the concentration level of 0.8 pM. Such an ultraminiature fiber-tip plasmonic biosensor offers a cost-effective biodetection technology for a myriad of applications ranging from point-of-care testing to in vivo diagnosis of stubborn diseases.

Assembling Biocompatible Polymers on Gold Nanoparticles: Toward a Rational Design of Particle Shape by Molecular Dynamics

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have received great attention in a number of fields ranging from the energy sector to biomedical applications. As far as the latter is concerned, due to rapid renal clearance and a short lifetime in blood, AuNPs are often encapsulated in a poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) matrix owing to its biocompatibility and biodegradability. A better understanding of the PLGA polymers on the AuNP surface is crucial to improve and optimize the above encapsulation process. In this study, we combine a number of computational approaches to explore the adsorption mechanisms of PLGA oligomers on a Au crystalline NP and to rationalize the PLGA coating process toward a more efficient design of the NP shape. Atomistic simulations supported by a recently developed unsupervised machine learning scheme show the temporal evolution and behavior of PLGA clusterization by tuning the oligomer concentration in aqueous solutions. Then, a detailed surface coverage analysis coupled with free energy landscape calculations sheds light on the anisotropic nature of PLGA adsorption onto the AuNP. Our results prove that the NP shape and topology may address and privilege specific sites of adsorption, such as the Au {1 1 1} crystal planes in selected NP samples. The modeling-based investigation suggested in this article offers a solid platform to guide the design of coated NPs.

Surface modifications of Gold Nanoparticles: Stabilization and Recent Applications in Cancer Therapy

Gold nanoparticles (GNP) are noble metal nanocarriers that have been recently researched upon for pharmaceutical applications, imaging, and diagnosis. These metallic nanocarriers are easy to synthesize using chemical reduction techniques as their surface can be easily modified. Also, the properties of GNP are significantly affected by its size and shape which mandates its stabilization using suitable techniques of surface modification. Over the past decade, research has focused on surface modification of GNP and its stabilization using polymers, polysaccharides, proteins, dendrimers, and phase-stabilizers like gel phase or ionic liquid phase. The use of GNP for pharmaceutical applications requires its surface modification using biocompatible and inert surface modifiers. The stabilizers used, interact with the surface of GNP to provide either electrostatic stabilization or steric stabilization. This review extensively discusses the surface modification techniques for GNP and the related molecular level interactions involved in the same. The influence of various factors like the concentration of stabilizers used their characteristics like chain length and thickness, pH of the surrounding media, etc., on the surface of GNP and resulting to stability have been discussed in detail. Further, this review highlights the recent applications of surface-modified GNP in the management of tumor microenvironment and cancer therapy.

Light Triggered Enhancement of Antibiotic Efficacy in Biofilm Elimination Mediated by Gold-Silver Alloy Nanoparticles

Bacterial biofilm is a tri-dimensional complex community of cells at different metabolic stages involved in a matrix of self-produced extracellular polymeric substances. Biofilm formation is part of a defense mechanism that allows the bacteria to survive in hostile environments, such as increasing resistance or tolerance to antimicrobial agents, causing persistent infections hard to treat and impair disease eradication. One such example is bovine mastitis associated with Streptococcus dysgalactiae subsp. dysgalactiae (SDSD), whose worldwide health and economic impact is on the surge. As such, non-conventional nanobased approaches have been proposed as an alternative to tackle biofilm formation and to which pathogenic bacteria fail to adapt. Among these, metallic nanoparticles have gained significant attention, particularly gold and silver nanoparticles, due to their ease of synthesis and impact against microorganism growth. This study provides a proof-of-concept investigation into the use of gold-silver alloy nanoparticles (AuAgNPs) toward eradication of bacterial biofilms. Upon visible light irradiation of AuAgNPs there was considerable disturbance of the biofilms' matrix. The hindering of structural integrity of the biofilm matrix resulted in an increased permeability for entry of antibiotics, which then cause the eradication of biofilm and inhibit subsequent biofilm formation. Additionally, our results that AuAgNPs inhibited the formation of SDSD biofilms via distinct stress pathways that lead to the downregulation of two genes critical for biofilm production, namely, brpA-like encoding biofilm regulatory protein and fbpA fibronectin-binding protein A. This study provides useful information to assist the development of nanoparticle-based strategies for the active treatment of biofilm-related infections triggered by photoirradiation in the visible.

The emerging development of solar evaporators in materials and structures

To tackle the increasingly severe freshwater resource scarcity problem, desalination using solar evaporators is potentially an effective approach. This article reviews the research progress of solar evaporators in recent years, including materials, structures, and performance evaluations. In terms of material research, this article introduces the mechanism of photothermal conversion of metallic, semiconductor, polymeric, and carbon-based materials and their applications in the research of solar evaporators. The structure design of solar evaporators that can improve the photothermal conversion efficiency and water transport efficiency are summarized in detail. Regarding the evaluation of the evaporator performance, common evaluation methods for steam efficiency and environmental benefits of solar evaporators were introduced. Finally, this article analyzes the current problems of evaporators and proposes a prospect for the development of new types of high-efficiency evaporators.

Scalable Fabrication of Conjugated Microporous Polymer Sponges for Efficient Solar Steam Generation

Seawater evaporation realized by solar-thermal conversion represents one of the most sustainable and effective strategies to obtain fresh water. Many approaches have been proposed to achieve high efficiencies of solar-thermal conversion, but their practical applications are limited by the low scalability. Herein, novel porphyrin/aniline-based conjugated microporous polymers (PACMPs) are synthesized via a Buchwald-Hartwig coupling reaction, which are then integrated with polyurethane sponges via a simple dip-coating technique. The PACMP-modified sponges (PACSs) retain the high porosity of the sponge substrate and excellent solar-thermal conversion properties of PACMPs. Under standard solar irradiation (1 kW m^-2), PACSs achieve a high seawater evaporation rate of 1.31 kg m^-2 h^-1 with a solar-thermal conversion efficiency of 86.3%. PACSs show no salt accumulation and high performance of desalination and dye decolorization, removing >99.9% salt and >99.2% dye, respectively. The self-floating characteristic, recyclability, and durable solar-thermal evaporation efficiencies enable PACSs to be promising candidate materials for seawater desalination and sewage purification.

NIR and glutathione trigger the surface release of methotrexate linked by Diels-Alder adducts to anisotropic gold nanoparticles

The administration and controlled release of drugs over time remains one of the greatest challenges of science today. In the nanomaterials field, anisotropic gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with plasmon bands centered at the near-infrared region (NIR), such as gold nanorods (AuNRs) and gold nanoprisms (AuNPrs), under laser irradiation, locally increase the temperature, allowing the release of drugs. In this sense, temporally controlled drug delivery could be promoted by external stimuli using thermo-reversible chemical reactions, such as Diels-Alder cycloadditions from a diene and a dienophile fragment (compound a). In this study, an antitumor drug (methotrexate, MTX) was linked to plasmonic AuNPs by a Diels-Alder adduct (compound c), which after NIR suffers a retro-Diels-Alder reaction, producing release of the drug (compound b). We obtained two nanosystems based on AuNRs and AuNPrs. Both nanoconstructs were coated with BSA-r₈ (Bovine Serum Albumin functionalized with Arg₈, all-D octa arginine) in order to increase the colloidal stability and promote internalization of the nanosystems on HeLa and SK-BR-3 cells. In addition, the presence of BSA allows protecting the cargo from being released on the extracellular environment and promotes the photothermal release of the drug in the presence of glutathione (GSH). The nanosystems' drug release profile was evaluated after NIR irradiation in the presence and absence of glutathione (GSH), showing a considerable increase of drug release when NIR light and glutathione were combined. This work broadens the range of possibilities of using two complementary strategies for the controlled release of an antitumor drug from AuNRs and AuNPrs: the photothermal cleavage of a thermolabile adduct controlled by an external stimulus (laser irradiation), complemented with the use of the intracellular metabolite GSH.

Modified Hollow Glass Microspheres/Reduced Graphene Oxide Composite Aerogels with Low Thermal Conductivity for Highly Efficient Solar Steam Generation

Solar steam generation (SSG) as a pollution-free and sustainable way for desalination or wastewater treatment has attracted great attention in recent years. Herein, we report the fabrication of novel aerogels GAHAS and GAHAF composed of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550)-modified hollow glass microspheres (HGM) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) by a sol-gel method for highly efficient SSG. The RGO can well wrap on modified HGM and form an interpenetrated porous structure with an excellent mechanical property. In addition, benefiting from the hollow structure of HGM, GAHAS obtained by supercritical CO₂ drying well maintains the original structure of the hydrogel and shows low thermal conductivity (0.0823 W m^-1 K^-1) in the wet state and self-floating ability. Combined with its superhydrophilic wettability and high light absorption (ca. 93%), the as-prepared GAHAS shows an outstanding photothermal conversion efficiency of 89.13% under 1 sun (1 kW m^-2) illumination and excellent stability. Moreover, from the simulated seawater outdoor solar desalination experiment, it was found that the concentrations of the four primary ions K⁺, Ca²⁺, Na⁺, and Mg²⁺ in purified water are 1.65, 0.09, 1.42, and 0.32 mg L^-1, respectively, and fully meet drinking water standards. Thus, our GAHAS aerogel shows great potential for practical application in SSG. This work enriches the photothermal materials and may provide a new idea for design and creation of HGM-based photothermal materials with low thermal conductivity, tunable porosity, high mechanical strength, self-floating ability, and high solar energy conversion efficiency for SSG.

Harvesting Solar Energy by Flowerlike Carbon Cloth Nanocomposites for Simultaneous Generation of Clean Water and Electricity

Harvesting solar energy for photothermal conversion in an efficient manner for steam-electricity cogeneration is particularly opportune in the context of comprehensive solar utilization to address the challenge of a global shortage of fresh water. However, the fragile solar thermal devices and the single-energy utilization pattern greatly hinder extensive solar energy exploitation and practical application. Herein, a flexible carbon cloth nanocomposite with a biomimetic pelargonium hortorum-petal-like surface that embraces all desirable chemical and physical properties, that is, enhanced light acquisition, excellent photothermal property, and operational durability, for high-performance solar-driven interfacial water evaporation distillation is reported. Combined with the two-dimensional water channel, the solar evaporator shows a solar-to-steam conversion efficiency of 93% under the simulated solar illumination of 1 kW m^-2. More strikingly, the solar steam generation-induced electricity based on the practical consideration toward more infusive solar thermal application is proposed. Such integrative steam-electricity generators presented here provide an attractive method to produce on-site electricity and fresh water in an individualized mode in various resource-constrained areas.

Adsorption of bovine serum albumin on gold nanoprisms: interaction and effect of NIR irradiation on protein corona

Because of their photothermal properties, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have gained attention regarding their use in drug delivery and therapeutic applications. In this sense, it is interesting to consider their interactions with biologically available proteins, such as serum albumin, as well as the effects of irradiation and photothermal conversion on the protein structure that can lead to a loss of function or generate an immune response. Gold nanoprisms (AuNPrs) have gained interest due to their low toxicity, ease of synthesis, and excellent stability, promoting their use in bioapplications such as surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), drug delivery, and photothermal therapy. The interaction between AuNPrs, with plasmon bands centred in the near-infrared region (NIR), and bovine serum albumin (BSA) has not been explored yet. UV-Vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and fluorescence spectroscopy were used to study the interaction between AuNPrs and BSA in addition to estimation of the adsorption rate and kinetic and thermodynamic parameters (K, ΔH°, ΔG°, ΔS°, and Ea) using adsorption isotherms and Langmuir and Freundlich models. The results suggest spontaneous cooperative binding in multilayer adsorption, achieved by the chemisorption of BSA on the AuNPr surface through the S-Au interaction, as confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. On the other hand, the photothermal conversion efficiency (PE) of the coated nanoparticles after NIR irradiation was assessed, resulting in a slight decrease in the PE of BSA coated on AuNPrs in comparison with that of noncapped nanoparticles. The effect of the irradiation on the protein conformation of capped nanoparticles was also assessed; circular dichroism showed BSA unfolding upon interaction with AuNPrs, with a decrease in the α-helix and β-sheet contents, as well as an increase in random coil conformations. Changes in the Raman spectrum suggest a modification of the disposition of the protein residues exposed to the gold surface after NIR irradiation; but at the secondary structure level, no relevant changes were observed. This provides possibilities for the use of NPs-BSA for bioapplications based on the photothermal effect promoted by laser irradiation, since the biological identity of the protein is preserved after NIR irradiation.

Construction of a Three-Dimensional Interpenetrating Network Sponge for High-Efficiency and Cavity-Enhanced Solar-Driven Wastewater Treatment

It is well known that the photothermal conversion performance of solar-driven interfacial water evaporation systems is known to have a stronger photothermal conversion performance than suspended water evaporation systems due to their relatively strong ability to suppress overall heat loss. Natural polymer chitosan and gelatin can form a three-dimensional interpenetrating network (IPN) sponge to provide an interface for water evaporation due to strong hydrogen bonding and electrostatic attraction interaction. However, the lack of effective light absorption, the intrinsic short lifetime, and the poor photothermal conversion greatly compromise their steam generation performance. Here, we fabricated a chitosan/gelatin-based IPN sponge incorporated with melanin-coated titania hollow nanospheres (CG@MPT-h) as a solar thermal converter, which is designed to exhibit a unique cavity structure and vertical channels. The cavity structure of melanin-coated titania acts as a solar thermal transducer, while the chitosan/gelatin-based IPN sponge acts as a single-pass water pump. A water hyacinth-inspired evaporation system shows outstanding steam generation performance, and the highest steam generation rate was 3.17 kg m^-2 h^-1 under a 2.5 sun illumination because of the cavity enhancement effect, far above TiO₂ particles and reported photo-thermal conversion materials. More importantly, the embedding of MPT-h nanoparticles in the IPN sponge effectively inhibits the growth of bacteria in the vertical channels, resulting in an antibacterial solar-driven water evaporator. This advanced sponge provides a cost-effective and practical sustainable energy technique for solar-driven wastewater treatment.

Nanoenabled Photothermal Materials for Clean Water Production

Solar-powered water evaporation is a primitive technology but interest has revived in the last five years due to the use of nanoenabled photothermal absorbers. The cutting-edge nanoenabled photothermal materials can exploit a full spectrum of solar radiation with exceptionally high photothermal conversion efficiency. Additionally, photothermal design through heat management and the hierarchy of smooth water-flow channels have evolved in parallel. Indeed, the integration of all desirable functions into one photothermal layer remains an essential challenge for an effective yield of clean water in remote-sensing areas. Some nanoenabled photothermal prototypes equipped with unprecedented water evaporation rates have been reported recently for clean water production. Many barriers and difficulties remain, despite the latest scientific and practical implementation developments. This Review seeks to inspire nanoenvironmental research communities to drive onward toward real-time solar-driven clean water production.

Enhanced solar photothermal effect of PANi fabrics with plasmonic nanostructures

The photothermal energy conversion in hanging and floating polyaniline (PANi)-cotton fabrics is investigated using a model based on the heat diffusion equation. Perfect absorption and anti-reflection of wet hanging PANi-cotton fabrics cause quick transfer of total incident light into water confining nearly 100% of the sunlight. As a result, a hanging membrane is found to have more attractive properties than a floating above water fabric. We find, however, that the photothermal properties of a floating PANi-cotton membrane can greatly be enhanced by dispersing TiN nanoparticles in the water below the fabric. The calculated temperature gradients for TiN nanoparticle solutions show that the absorbed energy grows with increasing the nanoparticle density and that the photothermal process occurs mostly near the surface. The collective heating effects depend on the size and density of nanoparticles, which can further be used to modulate the photothermal process.

Building Polyoxometalate "Nano-Walls" on 3D Porous Carbon Paper: A Solar Steam Generation System for Water Purification

As promising fresh-water purification devices, solar steam generation systems have attracted significant attention recently. However, in practice, the approach often suffers from a poor solar energy conversion efficiency and a low water production rate due to poor material selection and inefficient microscopic structure design. Here, we fabricate an efficient solar steam generation system by "building" polyoxometalate "nano-walls" on rice paper-derived three-dimensional porous carbon paper. In this solar steam generation system, the height of the vertically aligned CoP₄ Mo₆ "nano-walls" range from 100 to 150 nm with thicknesses about 15 to 25 nm. Under 1 sun irradiation (1 sun = 1 kW m^-2 ), the surface temperature increases from 29 to 50 °C in a short time with a solar thermal conversion efficiency achieving 92.8 %. The stability and durability of this solar steam generation system, which withstands fifteen cycle continuous tests, also offer good prospects. Its attractive solar energy conversion performance originates from the intense sunlight absorption and high conversion ability of the CoP₄ Mo₆ "nano-walls", as well as extremely promising heat localization and water transportation properties of the three-dimensional porous carbon paper. This solar steam generation system, which has produced some inspiring results, is employed for seawater desalination and for purification of water polluted with organic dyes.

Effect of sonication time on the evaporation rate of seawater containing a nanocomposite

Sonication time has a significant contribution to the stability and properties of nanofluids (mixtures of nanoparticles and a base fluid). Finding the optimum sonication time can help to save energy and ensure optimal design. The present study deals with the sonication time effect on the evaporation rate of seawater containing a nanocomposite (i.e., a mixture of multi-walled carbon nanotubes and graphene nanoplates). For indoor experiments, a solar simulator was employed as the radiation source. At first, the nanofluid with a concentration of 0.01% wt. was sonicated in an ultrasonic bath for different times of 30, 60, 90, 120, 180, 240 min, and the associated zeta potential values were recorded to evaluate the stability. Next, the best time function was used to appraise the effect of concentration variations (0.001, 0.002, 0.004, 0.01, 0.02 and 0.04% wt.) and the light intensities (1.6, 2.6, and 3.6 suns) on the rate of solar steam generation. The results indicate that for a concentration of 0.01% wt. and under 3.6 suns, the highest evaporation efficiency of 61.3% would be achieved at 120 min sonication time.

Upconverted emission-driven photothermal conversion with gold nanospheres based on triplet–triplet annihilation

Low-energy visible light was converted into heat energy through the excitation of the localized surface plasmon resonance of gold nanospheres excited by upconverted emission based on triplet–triplet annihilation of organic molecules.

Preparation and application of sunlight absorbing ultra-black carbon aerogel/graphene oxide membrane for solar steam generation systems

In this study, sunlight absorbing membranes consisting of ultra-black resorcinol–formaldehyde (RF)-based carbon aerogel (CA) and hydrophilic graphene oxide (GO) suspension were fabricated. To investigate the effect of substrate structure, CA/GO ink was cast onto two different layers including 3D modified copper foam (MCF) and 2D paper sheet. The copper foam (CF) was treated with a new and simple modification method to enhance the hydrophilicity. Finally, the solar steam generation performances of the prepared membranes were evaluated. The optical analyses indicated that 2D and 3D samples respectively reflected ∼4.5% and ∼10%, and transmitted ∼0% of the incident light. The water contact angle measurements revealed a significant change in the wettability of the CF layer representing a contact angle of 139.41° before the modification. Based on the water evaporation rates, the efficiencies of 81.1% and 91.4% (at 1 kW m⁻²) were achieved for 2D and 3D absorbents, respectively. In addition to eliminating the geometrical restrictions of the monolithic absorbents, the results verified that CA/GO ink-based absorbents were promising materials for solar steam generation systems (SSG) due to the high light absorption, superhydrophilicity and porous structure.

Different distributions of gold nanoparticles on the tumor and calculation of dose enhancement factor by Monte Carlo simulation

Gold nanoparticles can be used to increase the dose of the tumor due to its high atomic number as well as being free from apparent toxicity. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of distribution of gold nanoparticles models, as well as changes in nanoparticle sizes and spectrum of radiation energy along with the effects of nanoparticle penetration into surrounding tissues in dose enhancement factor DEF. Three mathematical models were considered for distribution of gold nanoparticles in the tumor, such as 1-uniform, 2- non-uniform distribution with no penetration margin and 3- non-uniform distribution with penetration margin of 2.7 mm of gold nanoparticles. For this purpose, a cube-shaped water phantom of 50 cm size in each side and a cube with 1 cm side placed at depth of 2 cm below the upper surface of the cubic phantom as the tumor was defined, and then 3 models of nanoparticle distribution were modeled. MCNPX code was used to simulate 3 distribution models. DEF was evaluated for sizes of 20, 25, 30, 50, 70, 90 and 100 nm of gold nanoparticles, and 50, 95, 250 keV and 4 MeV photon energies. In uniform distribution model the maximum DEF was observed at 100 nm and 50 keV being equal to 2.90, in non-uniform distribution with no penetration margin, the maximum DEF was measured at 100 nm and 50 keV being 1.69, and in non-uniform distribution with penetration margin of 2.7 mm, the maximum DEF was measured at 100 nm and 50 keV as 1.38, and the results have been showed that the dose was increased by injecting nanoparticles into the tumor. It is concluded that the highest DEF could be achieved in low energy photons and larger sizes of nanoparticles. Non-uniform distribution of gold nanoparticles can increase the dose and also decrease the DEF in comparison with the uniform distribution. The non-uniform distribution of nanoparticles with penetration margin showed a lower DEF than the non-uniform distribution without any margin and uniform distribution. Meanwhile, utilization of the real X-ray spectrum brought about a smaller DEF in comparison to mono-energetic X-ray photons.

Photothermal materials for efficient solar powered steam generation

Solar powered steam generation is an emerging area in the field of energy harvest and sustainable technologies. The nano-structured photothermal materials are able to harvest energy from the full solar spectrum and convert it to heat with high efficiency. Moreover, the materials and structures for heat management as well as the mass transportation are also brought to the forefront. Several groups have reported their materials and structures as solutions for high performance devices, a few creatively coupled other physical fields with solar energy to achieve even better results. This paper provides a systematic review on the recent developments in photothermal nanomaterial discovery, material selection, structural design and mass/heat management, as well as their applications in seawater desalination and fresh water production from waste water with free solar energy. It also discusses current technical challenges and likely future developments. This article will help to stimulate novel ideas and new designs for the photothermal materials, towards efficient, low cost practical solar-driven clean water production.

Plasmonic Bubble Nucleation and Growth in Water: Effect of Dissolved Air

Under continuous laser irradiation, noble metal nanoparticles immersed in water can quickly heat up, leading to the nucleation of so-called plasmonic bubbles. In this work, we want to further understand the bubble nucleation and growth mechanism. In particular, we quantitatively study the effect of the amount of dissolved air on the bubble nucleation and growth dynamics, both for the initial giant bubble, which forms shortly after switching on the laser and is mainly composed of vapor, and for the final life phase of the bubble, during which it mainly contains air expelled from water. We found that the bubble nucleation temperature depends on the gas concentration: the higher the gas concentration, the lower the bubble nucleation temperature. Also, the long-term diffusion-dominated bubble growth is governed by the gas concentration. The radius of the bubbles grows as R(t) ∝ t ^1/3 for air-equilibrated and air-oversaturated water. In contrast, in partially degassed water, the growth is much slower since, even for the highest temperature we achieve, the water remains undersaturated.

Confinement effects on the solar thermal heating process of TiN nanoparticle solutions

We propose a theoretical approach to describe quantitatively the heating process in aqueous solutions of dispersed TiN nanoparticles under solar illumination. The temperature gradients of the solution with different concentrations of the TiN nanoparticles are calculated when confinement effects of the container on the solar absorption are taken into account. We find that the average penetration of solar radiation into the solution is significantly reduced upon increasing the nanoparticle concentration. At high concentrations, our numerical results show that photons are localized near the surface of the solution. Moreover, the heat energy balance equation at the vapor-liquid interface is used to describe the solar steam generation. The theoretical time dependence of temperature rise and vaporization weight losses is consistent with experiments. Our calculations give strong evidence that the substantially localized heating near the vapor-liquid interface is the main reason for the more efficient steam generation process by floating plasmonic membranes when compared to randomly dispersed nanoparticles. The validated theoretical model suggests that our approach can be applied towards new predictions and other experimental data descriptions.

Fabrication of detonation nanodiamond@sodium alginate hydrogel beads and their performance in sunlight-triggered water release

Agricultural water use accounts for around 70% of total water use in the world. Enhancing agricultural water use efficiency is a key way to cope with water shortage. Here, sunlight-responsive hydrogel beads consisting of sodium alginate (SA) matrix and detonation nanodiamond (DND) were fabricated by an ion gelation technique, which has potential applications in controlled water release. The interaction between the DND and SA matrix was investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra and X-ray diffraction (XRD). UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra verified DND can absorb solar energy in the UV, visible and even near-infrared regions. DND dispersed in the hydrogel matrix can absorb sunlight and generate heat, increasing the temperature of the matrix and resulting in slow release of water from the elastic beads. In addition, the effects of DND content and pH were systematically studied to evaluate their water adsorption properties. The swelling kinetics of DND@SA hydrogel beads in distilled water could be fitted well with a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Six consecutive cycles of water release-reswelling indicated that their easy regeneration and reusability. The novel and eco-friendly hydrogel beads should be applicable to on-demand, sequential, and long-term release of water via light exposure.

The optical duality of tellurium nanoparticles for broadband solar energy harvesting and efficient photothermal conversion

Nanophotonic materials for solar energy harvesting and photothermal conversion are urgently needed to alleviate the global energy crisis. We demonstrate that a broadband absorber made of tellurium (Te) nanoparticles with a wide size distribution can absorb more than 85% solar radiation in the entire spectrum. Temperature of the absorber irradiated by sunlight can increase from 29° to 85°C within 100 s. By dispersing Te nanoparticles into water, the water evaporation rate is improved by three times under solar radiation of 78.9 mW/cm². This photothermal conversion surpasses that of plasmonic or all-dielectric nanoparticles reported before. We also establish that the unique permittivity of Te is responsible for the high performance. The real part of permittivity experiences a transition from negative to positive in the ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared region, which endows Te nanoparticles with the plasmonic-like and all-dielectric duality. The total absorption covers the entire spectrum of solar radiation due to the enhancement by both plasmonic-like and Mie-type resonances. It is the first reported material that simultaneously has plasmonic-like and all-dielectric properties in the solar radiation region. These findings suggest that the Te nanoparticle can be expected to be an advanced photothermal conversion material for solar-enabled water evaporation.

Giant and explosive plasmonic bubbles by delayed nucleation

When illuminated by a laser, plasmonic nanoparticles immersed in water can very quickly and strongly heat up, leading to the nucleation of so-called plasmonic vapor bubbles. While the long-time behavior of such bubbles has been well-studied, here, using ultrahigh-speed imaging, we reveal the nucleation and early life phase of these bubbles. After some delay time from the beginning of the illumination, a giant bubble explosively grows, and collapses again within 200 μs (bubble life phase 1). The maximal bubble volume [Formula: see text] remarkably increases with decreasing laser power, leading to less total dumped energy E. This dumped energy shows a universal linear scaling relation with [Formula: see text], irrespective of the gas concentration of the surrounding water. This finding supports that the initial giant bubble is a pure vapor bubble. In contrast, the delay time does depend on the gas concentration of the water, as gas pockets in the water facilitate an earlier vapor bubble nucleation, which leads to smaller delay times and lower bubble nucleation temperatures. After the collapse of the initial giant bubbles, first, much smaller oscillating bubbles form out of the remaining gas nuclei (bubble life phase 2). Subsequently, the known vaporization dominated growth phase takes over, and the bubble stabilizes (life phase 3). In the final life phase 4, the bubble slowly grows by gas expelling due to heating of the surrounding. Our findings on the explosive growth and collapse during the early life phase of a plasmonic vapor bubble have strong bearings on possible applications of such bubbles.

Plasmonic nanoparticle-embedded poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) nanofibrous composite films for solar steam generation

High-performance floating film-based solar steam generation has received extensive attention for clean fresh water generation. Herein, we report high-strength nanoporous gold nanoparticle (AuNP)/poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) nanofibre (PBONF) composite films that are capable of enhanced solar steam generation. The PBONFs were employed as building blocks to fabricate nanoporous PBONF multilayer composite films using a layer-by-layer assembly technique. These PBONF multilayer composite films then served as supports for depositing AuNPs. The resulting AuNP/PBONF composite films exhibit a high strength of 122 MPa and Young's modulus of 3.7 GPa, a broad spectrum photothermal effect, a mesoscopic structure, and a low thermal conductivity of 0.230 W m-1 K-1. Under one sun exposure, the AuNP/PBONF composite films exhibit an evaporation rate of 1.424 kg m-2 h-1 and a solar-vapor conversion efficiency of 83%. The AuNP/PBONF composite films are stable; therefore, they can be readily reused. These high-performance AuNP/PBONF composite films have potential for clean water generation under some extreme conditions such as space environments.

Alloying-assisted phonon engineering of layered BiInSe3@nickel foam for efficient solar-enabled water evaporation

The fresh water crisis has emerged as one of the most urgent bottlenecks hindering the rapid development of modern industry and society. Solar energy-driven water evaporation represents a potential green and sustainable solution to address this issue. Herein, for the first time, centimeter-scale BiInSe₃-coated nickel foam (BiInSe₃@NF) as an efficient solar-enabled evaporator was successfully achieved and exploited for solar energy-driven water evaporation. Benefitting from multiple scattering-induced light trapping of the rough substrate, strong light-matter interaction and intermediate band (IB)-induced efficient phonon emission of BiInSe₃, the BiInSe₃@NF device achieved a high evaporation rate of 0.83 kg m^-2 h^-1 under 1 sun irradiation, which is 2.5 times that of pure water. These figures-of-merit are superior to recently reported state-of-the-art photothermal conversion materials, such as black titania, plasmonic assembly and carbon black. In addition, superior stability over a period of 60 days was demonstrated. In summary, the current contribution depicts a facile scenario for design, production and application of an economical and efficient solar-enabled BiInSe₃@NF evaporator. More importantly, the phonon engineering strategy based on alloying induced IB states can be readily applied to other analogous van der Waals materials and a series of superior vdWM alloys toward photothermal applications can be expected in the near future.

Fiber-Based, Double-Sided, Reduced Graphene Oxide Films for Efficient Solar Vapor Generation

Solar vapor generation is a promising and whole new branch of photothermal conversion for harvesting solar energy. Various materials and devices for solar thermal conversion were successively produced and reported for higher solar energy utilization in the past few years. Herein, a compact device of reduced graphene oxides (rGO) and paper fibers was designed and assembled for efficient solar steam generation under light illumination, and it consists of water supply pipelines (WSP), a thermal insulator (TI) and a double-sided absorbing film (DSF). Heat localization is enabled by the black DSF due to its broad absorption of sunlight. More importantly, the heat transfer, from the hot DSF to the cold base fluid (water), was suppressed by TI with a low thermal conductivity. Meanwhile, bulk water was continuously transported to the DSF by WSP through TI, which was driven by the surface energy and surface tension based on the capillary effect. The effects of reduction degrees of rGO on the photothermal conversion were explored, and the evaporation efficiency reached 89.2% under one sun with 60 mg rGO. This new microdevice provided a basic technical support for distillation, desalination, sewage treatment, and related technologies.
