Lyotropic Liquid Crystal (LLC)-Templated Nanofiltration Membranes by Precisely Administering LLC/Substrate Interfacial Structure

Mesoporous materials based on lyotropic liquid crystal templates with precisely defined and flexible nanostructures offer an alluring solution to the age-old challenge of water scarcity. In contrast, polyamide (PA)-based thin-film composite (TFC) membranes have long been hailed as the state of the art in desalination. They grapple with a common trade-off between permeability and selectivity. However, the tides are turning as these novel materials, with pore sizes ranging from 0.2 to 5 nm, take center stage as highly coveted active layers in TFC membranes. With the ability to regulate water transport and influence the formation of the active layer, the middle porous substrate of TFC membranes becomes an essential player in unlocking their true potential. This review delves deep into the recent advancements in fabricating active layers using lyotropic liquid crystal templates on porous substrates. It meticulously analyzes the retention of the liquid crystal phase structure, explores the membrane fabrication processes, and evaluates the water filtration performance. Additionally, it presents an exhaustive comparison between the effects of substrates on both polyamide and lyotropic liquid crystal template top layer-based TFC membranes, covering crucial aspects such as surface pore structures, hydrophilicity, and heterogeneity. To push the boundaries even further, the review explores a diverse array of promising strategies for surface modification and interlayer introduction, all aimed at achieving an ideal substrate surface design. Moreover, it delves into the realm of cutting-edge techniques for detecting and unraveling the intricate interfacial structures between the lyotropic liquid crystal and the substrate. This review is a passport to unravel the enigmatic world of lyotropic liquid crystal-templated TFC membranes and their transformative role in global water challenges.

Surface morphology effects on clathrate hydrate wettability

HYPOTHESIS

Clathrate hydrates preferentially form at interfaces; hence, wetting properties play an important role in their formation, growth, and agglomeration. Experimental evidence suggests that the hydrate preparation process can strongly affect contact angle measurements, leading to the different results reported in the literature. These differences hamper technological progress. We hypothesize that changes in hydrate surface morphologies are responsible for the wide variation of contact angles reported in the literature.

EXPERIMENTS

Experimental testing of our hypothesis is problematic due to the preparation history of hydrates on their surface properties, and the difficulties in advanced surface characterization. Thus, we employ molecular dynamics simulations, which allow us to systematically change the interfacial features and the system composition. Implementing advanced algorithms, we quantify fundamental thermodynamic properties to validate our observations.

FINDINGS

We achieve excellent agreement with experimental observations for both atomically smooth and rough hydrate surfaces. Our results suggest that contact line pinning forces, enhanced by surface heterogeneity, are accountable for altering water contact angles, thus explaining the differences among reported experimental data. Our analysis and molecular level insights help interpret adhesion force measurements and yield a better understanding of the agglomeration between hydrate particles, providing a microscopic tool for advancing flow assurance applications.

Effects of Micellization Behavior on the Interfacial Adsorption in Binary Anionic/Nonionic Surfactant Systems: A Molecular Simulation Study

A surfactant interfacial adsorption process is highly associated with its micellization behaviors in the water phase, which is of great fundamental and practical significance in enhanced oil recovery. In this paper, the typical anionic surfactant 1-dodecanesulfonic acid sodium (DAS) and nonionic surfactants octylphenol polyoxyethylene ether-n (OP-n, n = 1, 5, and 10) are introduced to investigate their micellization behavior and interfacial adsorption process via molecular dynamics simulation. Number density profiles reveal that the additional OP5 molecules in the water phase generate the mixed micelle with DAS molecules and greatly promote its interfacial adsorption. Interaction energy calculation is employed to confirm the interaction of anionic/nonionic surfactants in the mixed micelle. Then, the radial distribution function, solvent-accessible surface area, and solvation free energy are calculated to further explore and verify the adsorption mechanism of the mixed micelle. It is found that the nonionic surfactant obviously decreases the hydrophilicity of the mixed micelle in the water phase, which should be responsible for its intensive tendency of the interfacial adsorption.

Molecular Origin of Wettability Alteration of Subsurface Porous Media upon Gas Pressure Variations

Upon extraction/injection of a large quantity of gas from/into a subsurface system in shale gas production or carbon sequestration, the gas pressure varies remarkably, which may significantly change the wettability of porous media involved. Mechanistic understanding of such changes is critical for designing and optimizing a related subsurface engineering process. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we have calculated the contact angle of a water droplet on various solid surfaces (kerogen, pyrophyllite, calcite, gibbsite, and montmorillonite) as a function of CO₂ or CH₄ gas pressure up to 200 atm at a temperature of 300 K. The calculation reveals a complex behavior of surface wettability alteration by gas pressure variation depending on surface chemistry and structure, and molecular interactions of fluid molecules with surfaces. As the CO₂ gas pressure increases, a partially hydrophilic kerogen surface becomes highly hydrophobic, while a calcite surface becomes more hydrophilic. Considering kerogen and calcite being the major components of a shale formation, we postulate that the wettability alteration of a solid surface induced by a gas pressure change may play an important role in fluid flows in shale gas production and geological carbon sequestration.

Comprehensive review on surfactant adsorption on mineral surfaces in chemical enhanced oil recovery

With the increasing demand for efficient extraction of residual oil, enhanced oil recovery (EOR) offers prospects for producing more reservoirs' original oil in place. As one of the most promising methods, chemical EOR (cEOR) is the process of injecting chemicals (polymers, alkalis, and surfactants) into reservoirs. However, the main issue that influences the recovery efficiency in surfactant flooding of cEOR is surfactant losses through adsorption to the reservoir rocks. This review focuses on the key issue of surfactant adsorption in cEOR and addresses major concerns regarding surfactant adsorption processes. We first describe the adsorption behavior of surfactants with particular emphasis on adsorption mechanisms, isotherms, kinetics, thermodynamics, and adsorption structures. Factors that affect surfactant adsorption such as surfactant characteristics, solution chemistry, rock mineralogy, and temperature were discussed systematically. To minimize surfactant adsorption, the chemical additives of alkalis, polymers, nanoparticles, co-solvents, and ionic liquids are highlighted as well as implementing with salinity gradient and low salinity water flooding strategies. Finally, current trends and future challenges related to the harsh conditions in surfactant based EOR are outlined. It is expected to provide solid knowledge to understand surfactant adsorption involved in cEOR and contribute to improved flooding strategies with reduced surfactant loss.

Surface science of cosmetic substrates, cleansing actives and formulations

The development of shampoo and cleansing formulations in cosmetics is at a crossroads due to consumer demands for better performing, more natural products and also the strong commitment of cosmetic companies to improve the sustainability of cosmetic products. In order to go beyond traditional formulations, it is of great importance to clearly establish the science behind cleansing technologies and appreciate the specificity of cleansing biological surfaces such as hair and skin. In this review, we present recent advances in our knowledge of the physicochemical properties of the hair surface from both an experimental and a theoretical point of view. We discuss the opportunities and challenges that newer, sustainable formulations bring compared to petroleum-based ingredients. The inevitable evolution towards more bio-based, eco-friendly ingredients and sustainable formulations requires a complete rethink of many well-known physicochemical principles. The pivotal role of digital sciences and modelling in the understanding and conception of new ingredients and formulations is discussed. We describe recent numerical approaches that take into account the specificities of the hair surface in terms of structuration, different methods that study the adsorption of formulation ingredients and finally the success of new data-driven approaches. We conclude with practical examples on current formulation efforts incorporating bio-surfactants, controlling foaming and searching for new rheological properties.

Directly probing surfactant adsorption on nanoscopic trenches and pillars

HYPOTHESIS

Confinement causes a change in the amount of surfactant adsorbed and in the adsorption morphology.

EXPERIMENTS

Two cationic surfactants, tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) and cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) were adsorbed at the silica-water interface. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) force curves were measured on 50 nm and 80 nm wide trenches. Force curves were also measured on silica pillars, and the results were quantified based on distance from the edge.

FINDINGS

Trenches: Adsorbed surfactants films in 50 nm and 80 nm trenches showed the same break-through values. However, compared to unconfined values, TTAB in trenches had decreased break-through and adhesion forces while CPC in trenches had increased break-through and adhesion forces, indicating that surfactant identity varies the confinement effect. Pillars: Near the edge, few surfactants adsorb, and those that do extend in the direction normal to the surface. While the experimental data agree qualitatively with previous coarse-grained molecular dynamic simulations, the length scales at which the phenomena are detected differ by ~ half-order of magnitude. Specifically, experimental data show measurable effects on adsorbed surfactant morphology at a distance from the edge 10-20 times the length of a surfactant molecule after accounting for the ~8 nm size of the probe.

The Role of Chemical Heterogeneity in Surfactant Adsorption at Solid-Liquid Interfaces

Chemical heterogeneity of solid surfaces disrupts the adsorption of surfactants from the bulk liquid. While its presence can hinder the performance of some formulations, bespoke chemical patterning could potentially facilitate controlled adsorption for nanolithography applications. Although some computational studies have investigated the impact of regularly patterned surfaces on surfactant adsorption, in reality, many interesting surfaces are expected to be stochastically disordered and this is an area unexplored via simulations. In this paper, we describe a new algorithm for the generation of randomly disordered chemically heterogeneous surfaces and use it to explore the adsorption behavior of four model nonionic surfactants. Using novel analysis methods, we interrogate both the global surface coverage (adsorption isotherm) and behavior in localized regions. We observe that trends in adsorption characteristics as surfactant size, head/tail ratio, and surface topology are varied and connect these to underlying physical mechanisms. We believe that our methods and approach will prove useful to researchers seeking to tailor surface patterns to calibrate nonionic surfactant adsorption.

Quantification of Ostwald Ripening in Emulsions via Coarse-Grained Simulations

Ostwald ripening is a diffusional mass transfer process that occurs in polydisperse emulsions, often with the result of threatening the emulsion stability. In this work, we design a simulation protocol that is capable of quantifying the process of Ostwald ripening at the molecular level. To achieve experimentally relevant time scales, the dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulation protocol is implemented. The simulation parameters are tuned to represent two benzene droplets dispersed in water. The coalescence between the two droplets is prevented via the introduction of membranes, which allow diffusion of benzene from one droplet to the other. The simulation results are quantified in terms of the changes in the droplet volume as a function of time. The results are in qualitative agreement with experiments. The agreement with the Lifshitz-Slyozov-Wagner theory becomes quantitative when the simulated solubility and diffusion coefficient of benzene-in-water are considered. The effect of two different surfactants was also investigated. In agreement with both experimental observations and theory, the addition of surfactants at moderate concentrations decreased the Ostwald ripening rate because of the reduction in the interfacial tension between benzene and water; as the surfactant film becomes dense, other phenomena are likely to further delay the Ostwald ripening. In fact, the results suggest that the surfactant that yields higher density at the benzene-water interface delayed more effectively Ostwald ripening. The formation of micelles can also affect the ripening rate, in qualitative agreement with experiments, although our simulations are not conclusive on such effects. Our simulations show that the coarse-grained DPD formalism is able to capture the molecular phenomena related to Ostwald ripening and reveal molecular level features that could help to understand experimental observations. The results could be useful for predicting and eventually controlling the long-term stability of emulsions.

Anisotropic Wetting of Droplets on Stripe-Patterned Chemically Heterogeneous Surfaces: Effect of Length Ratio and Deposition Position

The equilibrium state of a droplet deposited on chemically heterogeneous surfaces is studied by using many-body dissipative particle dynamics. The length ratio covers 2 orders from 0.01 to 1 and allows a systematical inspection of the changes of the droplet shape, contact angle, and aspect ratio with this parameter. Moreover, a new parameter, global aspect ratio, is introduced to better characterize the distortion of the droplet. It is found that the droplet shape at the equilibrium stage strongly lies on the deposition position when the length ratio is beyond 0.1. Additionally, the lateral displacement is observed when depositing the droplet on the border of two stripes at large length ratios (over 0.1). On the other hand, the Cassie area fraction also has a significant effect on the wetting behaviors. When the droplet is driven by a body force with a 45° inclined angle to the stripes, the moving direction could be strictly in line with the force direction, deviating from the force direction, or totally in line with the stripes, depending on the length ratio.

Atomic Force Microscopy Force Mapping Analysis of an Adsorbed Surfactant above and below the Critical Micelle Concentration

Force curves collected using an atomic force microscope (AFM) in the presence of adsorbed surfactants are often used to draw conclusions about adsorbed film packing, rigidity, and thickness. However, some noteworthy features of such force curve characteristics have yet to be thoroughly investigated and explained. In this work, we collected force curves from tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide films adsorbed on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG), silica, and silica that had been hydrophobized by functionalization with dichlorodimethyl silane. Breakthrough events in the force curves from several different trials were compared to show that the breakthrough distance, often reported as the adsorbed film thickness, increased with concentration below the critical micelle concentration (CMC) but was approximately 3.5 nm on all surfaces between 2× and 10× CMC; an unexpected result because of the different surface chemistries for the three surfaces. We employed an AFM probe with a different force constant ( k) value as well as a colloidal probe and the breakthrough distance remained approximately 3.5 nm in all cases. Gradient mapping, a variant of force mapping, was also implemented on the three surfaces and resulted in a new technique for visualizing adsorbed surfactant in situ. The resulting maps showed patches of adsorbed surfactant below the CMC and revealed that with increasing concentration, the size of the patches increased resulting in full coverage near and above the CMC. These results are, to our knowledge, the first time force mapping has been used to spatially track patches of adsorbed surfactant. Finally, layers of surfactants on an AFM tip were investigated by collecting a force map on a single AFM tip using the tip of a separate AFM probe. A breakthrough event was observed between the tips, indicating that a layer of surfactant was present on at least one, if not both tips.

Functionalization Pattern of Graphene Oxide Sheets Controls Entry or Produces Lipid Turmoil in Phospholipid Membranes

Molecular dynamics, coarse-grained to the level of hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions, shows that graphene oxide sheets, GOSs, can pierce through the phospholipid membrane and navigate the double layer only if the hydrophilic groups are randomly dispersed in the structure. Their behavior resembles that found in similar calculations for pristine graphene sheets. If the oxidation is located at the edge of the sheets, GOSs hover over the membrane and trigger a major reorganization of the lipids. The reorganization is the largest when the radius of the edge-functionalized sheet is similar to the length of the lipophilic chain of the lipids. In the reorganization, the heads of the lipid chains form dynamical structures that pictorially resemble the swirl of water flowing down a drain. All effects maximize the interaction between hydrophobic moieties on the one hand and lipophilic fragments on the other and are accompanied by a large number of lipid flip-flops. Possible biological consequences are discussed.

Adsorption and Depletion Regimes of a Nonionic Surfactant in Hydrophilic Mesopores: An Experimental and Simulation Study

Adsorption and aggregation of nonionic surfactants at oxide surfaces has been studied extensively in the past, but only for concentrations below and near the critical micelle concentration. Here we report an adsorption study of a short-chain surfactant (C₆E₃) in porous silica glass of different pore sizes (7.5 to 50 nm), covering a wide composition range up to 50 wt % in a temperature range from 20 °C to the LCST. Aggregative adsorption is observed at low concentrations, but the excess concentration of C₆E₃ in the pores decreases and approaches zero at higher bulk concentrations. Strong depletion of surfactant (corresponding to enrichment of water in the pores) is observed in materials with wide pores at high bulk concentrations. We propose an explanation for the observed pore-size dependence of the azeotropic point. Mesoscale simulations based on dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) were performed to reveal the structural origin of this transition from the adsorption to the depletion regime. The simulated adsorption isotherms reproduce the behavior found in the 7.5 nm pores. The calculated bead density profiles indicate that the repulsive interaction of surfactant head groups causes a depletion of surfactant in the region around the corona of the surface micelles.

Surfactant Assemblies on Selected Nanostructured Surfaces: Evidence, Driving Forces, and Applications

Surfactant adsorption at solid-liquid interfaces is critical for a number of applications of vast industrial interest and can also be used to seed surface-modification processes. Many of the surfaces of interest are nanostructured, as they might present surface roughness at the molecular scale, chemical heterogeneity, as well as a combination of both surface roughness and chemical heterogeneity. These effects provide lateral confinement on the surfactant aggregates. It is of interest to quantify how much surfactant adsorbs on such nanostructured surfaces and how the surfactant aggregates vary as the degree of lateral confinement changes. This review focuses on experimental evidence on selected substrates, including gold- and carbon-based substrates, suggesting that lateral confinement can have pronounced effects both on the amount adsorbed and on the morphology of the aggregates as well as on a systematic study, via diverse simulation approaches, on the effect of lateral confinement on the structure of the surfactant aggregates. Atomistic and coarse-grained simulations conducted for surfactants on graphene sheets and carbon nanotubes are reviewed, as well as coarse-grained simulations for surfactant adsorption on nanostructured surfaces. Finally, we suggest a few possible extensions of these studies that could positively impact a few practical applications. In particular, the simultaneous effect of lateral confinement and of the coadsorption of molecular compounds within the surface aggregates is expected to yield interesting fundamental results with long-lasting consequences in applications ranging from drug delivery to the design of advanced materials.
