Low-Valent Metals in Metal-Organic Frameworks Via Post-Synthetic Modification

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide uniquely tunable, periodic platforms for site-isolation of reactive low-valent metal complexes of relevance in modern catalysis, adsorptive applications, and fundamental structural studies. Strategies for integrating such species in MOFs include post-synthetic metalation, encapsulation and direct synthesis using low-valent organometallic complexes as building blocks. These approaches have each proven effective in enhancing catalytic activity, modulating product distributions (i.e., by improving catalytic selectivity), and providing valuable mechanistic insights. In this minireview, we explore these different strategies, as applied to isolate low-valent species within MOFs, with a particular focus on examples that leverage the unique crystallinity, permanent porosity and chemical mutability of MOFs to achieve deep structural insights that lead to new paradigms in the field of hybrid catalysis.

Directing the Selectivity of Oxygen Reduction to Water by Confining a Cu Catalyst in a Metal Organic Framework

Electrocatalysis is to play a key role in the transition towards a sustainable chemical and energy industry and active, stable and selective redox catalysts are much needed. Porous structures such as metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are interesting materials as these may influence selectivity of chemical reactions through confinement effects. In this work, the oxygen reduction catalyst Cu-tmpa was incorporated into the NU1000 MOF. Confinement of the catalyst within NU1000 steers the selectivity of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) towards water rather than peroxide. This is attributed to retention of the obligatory H2 O2 intermediate in close proximity to the catalytic center. Moreover, the resulting NU1000|Cu-tmpa MOF shows an excellent activity and stability in prolonged electrochemical studies, illustrating the potential of this approach.

Bioinspired Framework Catalysts: From Enzyme Immobilization to Biomimetic Catalysis

Enzymatic catalysis has fueled considerable interest from chemists due to its high efficiency and selectivity. However, the structural complexity and vulnerability hamper the application potentials of enzymes. Driven by the practical demand for chemical conversion, there is a long-sought quest for bioinspired catalysts reproducing and even surpassing the functions of natural enzymes. As nanoporous materials with high surface areas and crystallinity, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent an exquisite case of how natural enzymes and their active sites are integrated into porous solids, affording bioinspired heterogeneous catalysts with superior stability and customizable structures. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the advances of bioinspired MOFs for catalysis, discuss the design principle of various MOF-based catalysts, such as MOF-enzyme composites and MOFs embedded with active sites, and explore the utility of these catalysts in different reactions. The advantages of MOFs as enzyme mimetics are also highlighted, including confinement, templating effects, and functionality, in comparison with homogeneous supramolecular catalysts. A perspective is provided to discuss potential solutions addressing current challenges in MOF catalysis.

[Fe2S2-Agx]-Hydrogenase Active-Site-Containing Coordination Polymers and Their Photocatalytic H2 Evolution Reaction Properties

Three [Fe₂S₂-Ag_x]-hydrogenase active-site-containing coordination polymers (CPs), {[Fe₂S₂-Ag₁](4-cpmt)₂(CO)₆(ClO₄^-)}_n (1), {[Fe₂S₂-Ag₂](4-cpmt)₂(CO)₆(OTf^-)₂(benzene)}_n (2), and {[Fe₂S₂-Ag₂](3-cpmt)₂(CO)₆(ClO₄^-)₂}_n (3), were obtained by a direct synthesis method from ligands [FeFe](4-cpmt)₂(CO)₆ [L1; 4-cpmt = (4-cyanophenyl)methanethiolate] and [FeFe](3-cpmt)₂(CO)₆ [L2; 3-cpmt = (3-cyanophenyl)methanethiolate] with silver salts. 1-3 represent the first examples of [FeFe]-hydrogenase-based CPs. It was worth noting that the Ag-S bonding between the Ag centers and S atoms of a [Fe₂S₂] cluster produced a novel [Fe₂S₂-Ag_x] (x = 1 or 2) catalytic site in all three polymers. The results of photochemical H₂ generation experiments indicated that 2 and 3 containing [Fe₂S₂-Ag₂] active sites showed obviously improved catalytic performances compared with ligands L1 and L2 and [Fe₂S₂-Ag₁]-containing 1. This work provides a pioneering strategy for the direct synthesis of [Fe₂S₂]-based CPs or metal-organic frameworks.

Metal-Organic Frameworks as a Versatile Materials Platform for Unlocking New Potentials in Biocatalysis

Biocatalysts immobilization with nanomaterials has promoted the development of biocatalysis significantly and made it an indispensable part of catalysis industries nowadays. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), constructed from organic linkers and metal ions or clusters, have raised significant interests for biocatalysts immobilization in recent years. The diversity of building units, molecular-scale tunability, and modular synthetic routes of MOFs greatly expand its ability as the host to integrate with biocatalysts. In this review, the general synthetic strategies of MOFs with biocatalysts are first summarized. Then, the recent progress of MOFs as a versatile host for a series of biocatalysts, including natural enzymes, nanozymes, and organism-based biocatalysts, followed by the introduction of MOFs themselves as biocatalysts, is discussed. Furthermore, the stimuli-responsive properties of MOFs themselves or the additional functionalization of protein, polymer, and peptide within/on MOF that enable the biocatalysts with the controllable and tunable behavior are also summarized, which could unlock new potentials in biocatalysis. Finally, a perspective of the upcoming challenges, potential impacts, and future directions of biocatalytic MOFs is provided.

Electrochemical behaviors of a pincer-type NNN-Fe complex and catalytic H2 evolution activity

We describe electrochemical reactivity of a pincer-type [NNN-Fe(tBuNC)3](ClO4)2 complex. Upon electron reduction, the Fe(i) species experienced disproportionation to Fe(0) and Fe(ii). An electron-reduced Fe center dissociated a tBuNC ligand to make an open coordination site, where a proton could be transferred. The low-spin Fe center, assisted by isocyanide and a pyridine-based NNN-pincer ligand, catalyzed efficiently the proton reduction reaction. Also, a Lewis basic amine site in the side 'arm' of the NNN-pincer ligand lowered the free energy for the protonation of an Fe center during the proton reduction process. DFT calculations provided insight into a plausible catalytic pathway.

Mimicking the Electron Transport Chain and Active Site of [FeFe] Hydrogenases in One Metal-Organic Framework: Factors That Influence Charge Transport

[FeFe] hydrogenase (H₂ase) enzymes are effective proton reduction catalysts capable of forming molecular dihydrogen with a high turnover frequency at low overpotential. The active sites of these enzymes are buried within the protein structures, and substrates required for hydrogen evolution (both protons and electrons) are shuttled to the active sites through channels from the protein surface. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) provide a unique platform for mimicking such enzymes due to their inherent porosity which permits substrate diffusion and their structural tunability which allows for the incorporation of multiple functional linkers. Herein, we describe the preparation and characterization of a redox-active PCN-700-based MOF (PCN = porous coordination network) that features both a biomimetic model of the [FeFe] H₂ase active site as well as a redox-active linker that acts as an electron mediator, thereby mimicking the function of [4Fe4S] clusters in the enzyme. Rigorous studies on the dual-functionalized MOF by cyclic voltammetry (CV) reveal similarities to the natural system but also important limitations in the MOF-enzyme analogy. Most importantly, and in contrast to the enzyme, restrictions apply to the total concentration of reduced linkers and charge-balancing counter cations that can be accommodated within the MOF. Successive charging of the MOF results in nonideal interactions between linkers and restricted mobility of charge-compensating redox-inactive counterions. Consequently, apparent diffusion coefficients are no longer constant, and expected redox features in the CVs of the materials are absent. Such nonlinear effects may play an important role in MOFs for (electro)catalytic applications.

Synthetic strategies to incorporate Ru-terpyridyl water oxidation catalysts into MOFs: direct synthesis vs. post-synthetic approach

Incorporating molecular catalysts into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is a promising strategy for improving their catalytic longevity and recyclability. In this article, we investigate and compare synthetic routes for the incorporation of the potent water oxidation catalyst Ru(tda)(pyCO2H)2 (tda = 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine-6,6''-dicarboxylic acid, pyCO2H = iso-nicotinic acid) as a structural linker into a Zr-based UiO-type MOF. The task is challenging with this particular metallo-linker because of the equatorial dangling carboxylates that can potentially compete for Zr-coordination, as well as free rotation of the pyCO2H groups around the HO2CpyRupyCO2H axis. As a consequence, all attempts to synthesize a MOF with the metallo-linker directly under solvothermal conditions led to amorphous materials with the Ru(tda)(pyCO2H)2 linker coordinating to the Zr nodes in ill-defined ways, resulting in multiple waves in the cyclic voltammograms of the solvothermally obtained materials. On the other hand, an indirect post-synthetic approach in which the Ru(tda)(pyCO2H)2 linker is introduced into a preformed edba-MOF (edba = ethyne dibenzoic acid) of UiO topology results in the formation of the desired material. Interestingly, two distinctly different morphologies of the parent edba-MOF have been discovered, and the impact that the morphological difference has on linker incorporation is investigated.

Metal-Organic Framework-Based Catalysts with Single Metal Sites

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of distinctive porous crystalline materials constructed by metal ions/clusters and organic linkers. Owing to their structural diversity, functional adjustability, and high surface area, different types of MOF-based single metal sites are well exploited, including coordinately unsaturated metal sites from metal nodes and metallolinkers, as well as active metal species immobilized to MOFs. Furthermore, controllable thermal transformation of MOFs can upgrade them to nanomaterials functionalized with active single-atom catalysts (SACs). These unique features of MOFs and their derivatives enable them to serve as a highly versatile platform for catalysis, which has actually been becoming a rapidly developing interdisciplinary research area. In this review, we overview the recent developments of catalysis at single metal sites in MOF-based materials with emphasis on their structures and applications for thermocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis. We also compare the results and summarize the major insights gained from the works in this review, providing the challenges and prospects in this emerging field.

Analysis of Electrocatalytic Metal-Organic Frameworks

The electrochemical analysis of molecular catalysts for the conversion of bulk feedstocks into energy-rich clean fuels has seen dramatic advances in the last decade. More recently, increased attention has focused on the characterization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) containing well-defined redox and catalytically active sites, with the overall goal to develop structurally stable materials that are industrially relevant for large-scale solar fuel syntheses. Successful electrochemical analysis of such materials draws heavily on well-established homogeneous techniques, yet the nature of solid materials presents additional challenges. In this tutorial-style review, we cover the basics of electrochemical analysis of electroactive MOFs, including considerations of bulk stability, methods of attaching MOFs to electrodes, interpreting fundamental electrochemical data, and finally electrocatalytic kinetic characterization. We conclude with a perspective of some of the prospects and challenges in the field of electrocatalytic MOFs.

Double-Helical Ag-S Rod-Based Porous Coordination Polymers with Double Activation: σ-Active and π-Active Functions

As common coinage metals, silver and silver compounds have very rich application in the organic catalytic reaction. Immobilization of silver compounds on heterogeneous media is the most common way used in industrial catalytic reactions. In this work, we designed and synthesized a new heterogeneous porous silver catalyst, with in situ-formed Ag-S rods as connecting nodes and thiosemicarbazide-functionalized linear ligands, used in both σ- and π-catalytic transformations. Strong Ag-S bonds bypassed the loss of noble silver elements and inhibited the formation of nonporous silver particles which always led to the decrease of yields in homogenous reactions. Furthermore, various derivatives of propargylamines and phenylacetylenes were applied as both σ and π-active substrates with moderate to good yields.

Artificial photosynthesis with metal and covalent organic frameworks (MOFs and COFs): challenges and prospects in fuel-forming electrocatalysis

Mimicking photosynthesis in generating chemical fuels from sunlight is a promising strategy to alleviate society's demand for fossil fuels. However, this approach involves a number of challenges that must be overcome before this concept can emerge as a viable solution to society's energy demand. Particularly in artificial photosynthesis, the catalytic chemistry that converts energy in the form of electricity into carbon-based fuels and chemicals has yet to be developed. Here, we describe the foundational work and future prospects of an emerging and promising class of materials: metal- and covalent-organic frameworks (MOFs and COFs). Within this context, these porous and tuneable framework materials have achieved initial success in converting abundant feedstocks (H₂ O and CO₂ ) into chemicals and fuels. In this review, we first highlight key achievements in this direction. We then follow with a perspective on precisely how MOFs and COFs can perform in ways not possible with conventional molecular or heterogeneous catalysts. We conclude with a view on how spectroscopically probing MOF and COF catalysis can be used to elucidate reaction mechanisms and material dynamics throughout the course of reaction.

Rational Design of Catalytic Centers in Crystalline Frameworks

Crystalline frameworks including primarily metal organic frameworks (MOF) and covalent organic frameworks (COF) have received much attention in the field of heterogeneous catalysts recently. Beyond providing large surface area and spatial confinement, these crystalline frameworks can be designed to either directly act as or influence the catalytic sites at molecular level. This approach offers a unique advantage to gain deeper insights of structure-activity correlations in solid materials, leading to new guiding principles for rational design of advanced solid catalysts for potential important applications related to energy and fine chemical synthesis. In this review, recent key progress achieved in designing MOF- and COF-based molecular solid catalysts and the mechanistic understanding of the catalytic centers and associated reaction pathways are summarized. The state-of-the-art rational design of MOF- and COF-based solid catalysts in this review is grouped into seven different areas: (i) metalated linkers, (ii) metalated moieties anchored on linkers, (iii) organic moieties anchored on linkers, (iv) encapsulated single sites in pores, and (v) metal-mode-based active sites in MOFs. Along with this, some attention is paid to theoretical studies about the reaction mechanisms. Finally, technical challenges and possible solutions in applying these catalysts for practical applications are also presented.

Light-driven hydrogen evolution catalyzed by a cobaloxime catalyst incorporated in a MIL-101(Cr) metal-organic framework

A cobaloxime H₂ evolution catalyst with a hydroxo-functionalized pyridine ligand, Co(dmgH)₂(4-HEP)Cl [dmgH = dimethylglyoxime, 4-HEP = 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)pyridine] was immobilized on a chromium terephthalate metal-organic framework (MOF), MIL-101(Cr), to construct a MOF-catalyst hybrid which displays good photocatalytic H₂ evolution activity. The longevity of the cobaloxime catalyst is increased by MOF incorporation, but limited by the stability of the cobalt-pyridine bond under turnover conditions.

From protein engineering to artificial enzymes - biological and biomimetic approaches towards sustainable hydrogen production

Hydrogen gas is used extensively in industry today and is often put forward as a suitable energy carrier due its high energy density. Currently, the main source of molecular hydrogen is fossil fuels via steam reforming. Consequently, novel production methods are required to improve the sustainability of hydrogen gas for industrial processes, as well as paving the way for its implementation as a future solar fuel. Nature has already developed an elaborate hydrogen economy, where the production and consumption of hydrogen gas is catalysed by hydrogenase enzymes. In this review we summarize efforts on engineering and optimizing these enzymes for biological hydrogen gas production, with an emphasis on their inorganic cofactors. Moreover, we will describe how our understanding of these enzymes has been applied for the preparation of bio-inspired/-mimetic systems for efficient and sustainable hydrogen production.
