Abstract
Triphospha[3]ferrocenophane Fe(C5H4-PTip)2PCl (Tip = 2,4,6-tri(isopropyl)phenyl) has been prepared and its suitability to generate the corresponding bisphosphanylphosphenium ion has been explored. By formal addition of P+ to the latter, an unprecedented tetraphosphenium ion forms which likewise is capable of P+ transfer and qualifies as Lewis superacid based on its computed fluoride ion affinity. As a solid, this species is stable and conveniently storable, featuring a remarkably long P-P bond (2.335(5) Å). From this tetraphosphenium ion, known and unprecedented triphosphenium ions have been generated via P+ transfer in solution, including a triphosphenium ion with P-H functionalities. Moreover, the latter has been obtained by tautomeric rearrangement from the corresponding hydrophosphane precursor. The bonding situation and details of the P+ transfer have been investigated by DFT calculations and experimental methods like multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and SC-XRD.

Abstract
Reaction of the ruthenium carbene complex Cp*(IPr)RuCl (1) (IPr = 1,3-bis(Dipp)imidazol-2-ylidene; Dipp = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl) with sodium phosphaethynolate (NaOCP) led to intramolecular dearomatization of one of the Dipp substituents on the Ru-bound carbene to afford a Ru-bound phosphanorcaradiene, 2. Computations by DFT reveal a transition state characterized by a concerted process whereby CO migrates to the Ru center as the P atom adds to the π system of the aryl group. The phosphanorcaradiene possesses ambiphilic properties and reacts with both nucleophilic and electrophilic substrates, resulting in rearomatization of the ligand aryl group with net P atom transfer to give several unusual metal-bound, P-containing main-group moieties. These new complexes include a metallo-1-phospha-3-azaallene (Ru─P═C═NR), a metalloiminophosphanide (Ru─P═N─R), and a metallophosphaformazan (Ru─P(═N─N═CPh2)2). Reaction of 2 with the carbene 2,3,4,5-tetramethylimidazol-2-ylidene (IMe4) produced the corresponding phosphaalkene DippP═IMe4.

Abstract
We introduce the arsenido ligand onto the TiIV ion, yielding a remarkably covalent Ti≡As bond and the parent arsinidene Ti═AsH moiety. An anionic arsenido ligand is assembled via reductive decarbonylation involving the discrete TiII salt [K(cryptand)][(PN)2TiCl] (1) (cryptand = 222-Kryptofix) and Na(OCAs)(dioxane)1.5 in thf/toluene to produce the mixed alkali ate-complex [(PN)2Ti(As)]2(μ2-KNa(thf)2) (2) and the discrete salt [K(cryptand)][(PN)2Ti≡As] (3) featuring a terminal Ti≡As ligand. Protonation of 2 or 3 with various weak acids cleanly forms the parent arsinidene [(PN)2Ti═AsH] (4), which upon deprotonation with KCH2Ph in thf generates the more symmetric anionic arsenido [(PN)2Ti(As){μ2-K(thf)2}]2 (5). Experimental and computational studies suggest the pKa of 4 to be ∼23, and the bond orders in 2, 3, and 5 are all in the range of a Ti≡As triple bond, with decreasing bond order in 4.

Abstract
We report the use of solution and solid-state 31P Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy combined with Density Functional Theory calculations to benchmark the covalency of actinide-phosphorus bonds, thus introducing 31P NMR spectroscopy to the investigation of molecular f-element chemical bond covalency. The 31P NMR data for [Th(PH2)(TrenTIPS)] (1, TrenTIPS = {N(CH2CH2NSiPri3)3}3-), [Th(PH)(TrenTIPS)][Na(12C4)2] (2, 12C4 = 12-crown-4 ether), [{Th(TrenTIPS)}2(μ-PH)] (3), and [{Th(TrenTIPS)}2(μ-P)][Na(12C4)2] (4) demonstrate a chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) ordering of (μ-P)3- > (═PH)2- > (μ-PH)2- > (-PH2)1- and for 4 the largest CSA for any bridging phosphido unit. The B3LYP functional with 50% Hartree-Fock mixing produced spin-orbit δiso values that closely match the experimental data, providing experimentally benchmarked quantification of the nature and extent of covalency in the Th-P linkages in 1-4 via Natural Bond Orbital and Natural Localized Molecular Orbital analyses. Shielding analysis revealed that the 31P δiso values are essentially only due to the nature of the Th-P bonds in 1-4, with largely invariant diamagnetic but variable paramagnetic and spin-orbit shieldings that reflect the Th-P bond multiplicities and s-orbital mediated transmission of spin-orbit effects from Th to P. This study has permitted correlation of Th-P δiso values to Mayer bond orders, revealing qualitative correlations generally, but which should be examined with respect to specific ancillary ligand families rather than generally to be quantitative, reflecting that 31P δiso values are a very sensitive reporter due to phosphorus being a soft donor that responds to the rest of the ligand field much more than stronger, harder donors like nitrogen.

Abstract
Decarbonylation along with P-atom transfer from the phosphaethynolate anion, PCO- , to the NbIV complex [(PNP)NbCl2 (Nt BuAr)] (1) (PNP=N[2-Pi Pr2 -4-methylphenyl]2 - ; Ar=3,5-Me2 C6 H3 ) results in its coupling with one of the phosphine arms of the pincer ligand to produce a phosphanylidene phosphorane complex [(PNPP)NbCl(Nt BuAr)] (2). Reduction of 2 with CoCp*2 cleaves the P-P bond to form the first neutral and terminal phosphido complex of a group 5 transition metal, namely, [(PNP)Nb≡P(Nt BuAr)] (3). Theoretical studies have been used to understand both the coupling of the P-atom and the reductive cleavage of the P-P bond. Reaction of 3 with a two-electron oxidant such as ethylene sulfide results in a diamagnetic sulfido complex having a P-P coupled ligand, namely [(PNPP)Nb=S(Nt BuAr)] (4).

Abstract
Carbide complexes remain a rare class of molecules. Their paucity does not reflect exceptional instability but is rather due to the generally narrow scope of synthetic procedures for constructing carbide complexes. The preparation of carbide complexes typically revolves around generating LnM-CEx fragments, followed by cleavage of the C-E bonds of the coordinated carbon-based ligands (the alternative being direct C atom transfer). Prime examples involve deoxygenation of carbonyl ligands and deprotonation of methyl ligands, but several other p-block fragments can be cleaved off to afford carbide ligands. This Review outlines synthetic strategies toward terminal carbide complexes, bridging carbide complexes, as well as carbide-carbonyl cluster complexes. It then surveys the reactivity of carbide complexes, covering stoichiometric reactions where the carbide ligands act as C1 reagents, engage in cross-coupling reactions, and enact Fischer-Tropsch-like chemistry; in addition, we discuss carbide complexes in the context of catalysis. Finally, we examine spectroscopic features of carbide complexes, which helps to establish the presence of the carbide functionality and address its electronic structure.

Abstract
A low-spin and mononuclear vanadium complex, (Me nacnac)V(CO)(η2 -P≡Ct Bu) (2) (Me nacnac- =[ArNC(CH3 )]2 CH, Ar=2,6-i Pr2 C6 H3 ), was prepared upon treatment of the vanadium neopentylidyne complex (Me nacnac)V≡Ct Bu(OTf) (1) with Na(OCP)(diox)2.5 (diox=1,4-dioxane), while the isoelectronic ate-complex [Na(15-crown-5)]{([ArNC(CH2 )]CH[C(CH3 )NAr])V(CO)(η2 -P≡Ct Bu)} (4), was obtained via the reaction of Na(OCP)(diox)2.5 and ([ArNC(CH2 )]CH[C(CH3 )NAr])V≡Ct Bu(OEt2 ) (3) in the presence of crown-ether. Computational studies suggest that the P-atom transfer proceeds by [2+2]-cycloaddition of the P≡C bond across the V≡Ct Bu moiety, followed by a reductive decarbonylation to form the V-C≡O linkage. The nature of the electronic ground state in diamagnetic complexes, 2 and 4, was further investigated both theoretically and experimentally, using a combination of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, UV/Vis and NMR spectroscopies, cyclic voltammetry, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements, and comparison of salient bond metrics derived from X-ray single-crystal structural characterization. In combination, these data are consistent with a low-valent vanadium ion in complexes 2 and 4. This study represents the first example of a metathesis reaction between the P-atom of [PCO]- and an alkylidyne ligand.

Abstract
Decarbonylation along with E atom transfer from Na(OCE) (E=P, As) to an isocyanide coordinated to the tetrahedral TiII complex [(TptBu,Me )TiCl], yielded the [(TptBu,Me )Ti(η3 -ECNAd)] species (Ad=1-adamantyl, TptBu,Me- =hydrotris(3-tert-butyl-5-methylpyrazol-1-yl)borate). In the case of E=P, the cyanophosphide ligand displays nucleophilic reactivity toward Al(CH3 )3 ; moreover, its bent geometry hints to a reduced Ad-NCP3- resonance contributor. The analogous and rarer mono-substituted cyanoarsenide ligand, Ad-NCAs3- , shows the same unprecedented coordination mode but with shortening of the N=C bond. As opposed to TiII , VII fails to promote P atom transfer to AdNC, yielding instead [(TptBu,Me )V(OCP)(CNAd)]. Theoretical studies revealed the rare ECNAd moieties to be stabilized by π-backbonding interactions with the former TiII ion, and their assembly to most likely involve a concerted E atom transfer between Ti-bound OCE- to AdNC ligands when studying the reaction coordinate for E=P.

Abstract
The iridium tetrahydride complex Cp*IrH4 reacts with a range of isobutylaluminum derivatives of general formula Al(iBu)x(OAr)3-x (x = 1, 2) to give the unusual iridium aluminum species [Cp*IrH3Al(iBu)(OAr)] (1) via a reductive elimination route. The Lewis acidity of the Al atom in complex 1 is confirmed by the coordination of pyridine, leading to the adduct [Cp*IrH3Al(iBu)(OAr)(Py)] (2). Spectroscopic, crystallographic, and computational data support the description of these heterobimetallic complexes 1 and 2 as featuring strongly polarized Al(III)δ+-Ir(III)δ- interactions. Reactivity studies demonstrate that the binding of a Lewis base to Al does not quench the reactivity of the Ir-Al motif and that both species 1 and 2 promote the cooperative reductive cleavage of a range of heteroallenes. Specifically, complex 2 promotes the decarbonylation of CO2 and AdNCO, leading to CO (trapped as Cp*IrH2(CO)) and the alkylaluminum oxo ([(iBu)(OAr)Al(Py)]2(μ-O) (3)) and ureate ({Al(OAr)(iBu)[κ2-(N,O)AdNC(O)NHAd]} (4)) species, respectively. The bridged amidinate species Cp*IrH2(μ-CyNC(H)NCy)Al(iBu)(OAr) (5) is formed in the reaction of 2 with dicyclohexylcarbodiimine. Mechanistic investigations via DFT support cooperative heterobimetallic bond activation processes.

Abstract
The utilization of monomeric, lower phosphorous oxides and oxoanions, such as metaphosphite (PO2 - ), which is the heavier homologue of the common nitrite anion but previously only observed in the gas phase and by matrix isolation, requires new synthetic strategies. Herein, a series of rhenium(I-III) complexes with PO2 - as ligand is reported. Synthetic access was enabled by selective oxygenation of a terminal phosphide complex. Spectroscopic and computational examination revealed slightly stronger σ-donor and comparable π-acceptor properties of PO2 - compared to homologous NO2 - , which is one of the archetypal ligands in coordination chemistry.

Abstract
Osmium(ii) PNP pincer complexes bearing a hemilabile pyridyl-pyrazolide (PyrPz) ligand have been synthesised, and their reactivity towards Lewis acidic bismuth compounds has been examined. Reactions with BiCl3 resulted in chlorine-atom-transfer to give an osmium(iii) species. Reactions with cationic bismuth species led to adduct formation through N → Bi bond formation via the PyrPz ligand. Theoretical analyses revealed that steric interactions hamper Os → Bi bond formation and indicate that such interactions are possible upon reducing the steric profile around the osmium atom. Analytical techniques include NMR, IR, and EPR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, elemental analysis and DFT calculations.

Abstract
Annulated oxy-substituted 1,3,4-azadiphospholides such as the anion in Na[1] are readily accessible phosphorus heterocycles made from the phosphaethynolate anion (OCP)- and 2-chloropyridines. The sodium salt Na[1] reacts with oxophilic element halides such as OPCl3, PhSiCl3, PhBCl2 and CpTiCl3 at room temperature to form exclusively the oxygen bound tris-substituted compounds E(1)3 (with E = OP, PhSi, PhB- or CpTi). Six equivalents of Na[1] with group four metal chlorides MCl4 (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) form cleanly the hexa-substituted dianions (Na2[M(1)6]) which are isolated in excellent yields. The titanium complexes are deeply coloured species due to ligand to metal charge transfer (LMCT) excitations. In all complexes, the phosphorus atoms of the azadiphosphole moieties are able to coordinate to a soft metal center as shown in their reactions with [Mo(CO)3Mes], yielding complexes in which the Mo(CO)3 binds in a fac manner. Functionalization of the oxy group with amino phosphanes allows isolation of tridentate ligands, which have been used as synthons for macrocyclic molybdenum carbonyl complexes.

Abstract
The reaction of the ferrous complex [LFe(NCMe)2 ](OTf)2 (1), which contains a macrocyclic tetracarbene as ligand (L), with Na(OCP) generates the OCP- -ligated complex [LFe(PCO)(CO)]OTf (2) together with the dinuclear μ-phosphido complex [(LFe)2 P](OTf)3 (3), which features an unprecedented linear Fe-(μ-P)-Fe motif and a "naked" P-atom bridge that appears at δ=+1480 ppm in the 31 P NMR spectrum. 3 exhibits rich redox chemistry, and both the singly and doubly oxidized species 4 and 5 could be isolated and fully characterized. X-ray crystallography, spectroscopic studies, in combination with DFT computations provide a comprehensive electronic structure description and show that the Fe-(μ-P)-Fe core is highly covalent and structurally invariant over the series of oxidation states that are formally described as ranging from FeIII FeIII to FeIV FeIV . 3-5 now add a higher homologue set of complexes to the many systems with Fe-(μ-O)-Fe and Fe-(μ-N)-Fe core structures that are prominent in bioinorganic chemistry and catalysis.

Abstract
The chemistry of 2-phosphaethynolate is burgeoning, but there remains much to learn about this ligand, for example its reduction chemistry is scarce as this promotes P-C-O fragmentations or couplings. Here, we report that reduction of [U(TrenTIPS )(OCP)] (TrenTIPS =N(CH2 CH2 NSiPri 3 )3 ) with KC8 /2,2,2-cryptand gives [{U(TrenTIPS )}2 {μ-η2 (OP):η2 (CP)-OCP}][K(2,2,2-cryptand)]. The coordination mode of this trapped 2-phosphaethynolate is unique, and derives from an unprecedented highly reduced and highly bent form of this ligand with the most acute P-C-O angle in any complex to date (P-C-O ∡ ≈127°). The characterisation data support a mixed-valence diuranium(III/IV) formulation, where backbonding from uranium gives a highly reduced form of the P-C-O unit that is perhaps best described as a uranium-stabilised OCP2-. radical dianion. Quantum chemical calculations reveal that this gives unprecedented carbene character to the P-C-O unit, which engages in a weak donor-acceptor interaction with one of the uranium ions.

Abstract
Transmetallation studies with the phosphaethynolate ion, [OCP]-, have largely resulted in coordination according to classical Lewis acid-base theory. That is, for harder early transition metal ions, O-bound coordination has been observed, whereas in the case of softer late transition metal ions, P-bound coordination predominates. Herein, we report the use of a V(iii) complex, namely [(nacnac)VCl(OAr)] (1) (nacnac- = [ArNC(CH3)]2CH; Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3), to transmetallate [OCP]- and bind via the P-atom as [(nacnac)V(OAr)(PCO)] (2), the first example of a 3d early transition metal that binds [OCP]-via the P-atom. Full characterization studies of this molecule including HFEPR spectroscopy, SQuID measurements, and theoretical studies are presented.

Abstract
Reaction of the trivalent uranium complex [((Ad,Me ArO)3 N)U(DME)] with one molar equiv [Na(OCAs)(dioxane)3 ], in the presence of 2.2.2-crypt, yields [Na(2.2.2-crypt)][{((Ad,Me ArO)3 N)UIV (THF)}(μ-O){((Ad,Me ArO)3 N)UIV (CAs)}] (1), the first example of a coordinated η1 -cyaarside ligand (CAs- ). Formation of the terminal CAs- is promoted by the highly reducing, oxophilic UIII precursor [((Ad,Me ArO)3 N)U(DME)] and proceeds through reductive C-O bond cleavage of the bound arsaethynolate anion, OCAs- . If two equiv of OCAs- react with the UIII precursor, the binuclear, μ-oxo-bridged U2 IV/IV complex [Na(2.2.2-crypt)]2 [{((Ad,Me ArO)3 N)UIV }2 (μ-O)(μ-AsCAs)] (2), comprising the hitherto unknown μ:η1 ,η1 -coordinated (AsCAs)2- ligand, is isolated. The mechanistic pathway to 2 involves the decarbonylation of a dimeric intermediate formed in the reaction of 1 with OCAs- . An alternative pathway to complex 2 is by conversion of 1 via addition of one further equiv of OCAs- .

Abstract
In all likelihood the first synthesis of the phosphaethynolate anion, PCO- , was performed in 1894 when NaPH2 was reacted with CO in an attempt to make Na(CP) accompanied by elimination of water. This reaction was repeated 117 years later when it was discovered that Na(OCP) and H2 are the products of this remarkable transformation. Li(OCP) was synthesized and fully characterized in 1992 but this salt proved to be too unstable to allow for a detailed investigation of its chemistry. It was not until the heavier analogues of this lithium salt were isolated, Na(OCP) and K(OCP) (both of which are remarkably stable and can be even dissolved in water), that the chemistry of this new functional group could be explored. Here we review the chemistry of the 2-phosphaethynolate anion, a heavier phosphorus-containing analogue of the cyanate anion, and describe the wide breadth of chemical transformations for which it has been thus far employed. Its use as a ligand, in decarbonylative and deoxygenative processes, and as a building block for novel heterocycles is described. In the mere twenty-six years since Becker first reported the isolation of this remarkable anion, it has become a fascinating reagent for the synthesis of a vast library of, often unprecedented, molecules and compounds.

Abstract
The synthesis of a novel heterocubane [RSnE]4 was successful for E = As, while for E = P differing behaviour was observed. Aryl-substituted chlorostannylenes were treated with salts of heavy cyanate homologues PCO- and AsCO-. The reaction with AsCO- salts afforded primarily [TerSnAs]4 (Ter = 2,6-dimesitylphenyl). In contrast, the reaction of TerSnCl with NaPCO proceeded considerably less cleanly affording a mixture of products. The main product was putatively a neutral [Ter4Sn4P4] compound, however, it is not a cubane. A variety of by-products of this reaction could be characterised crystallographically.

Abstract
The use of bulky aryl(silyl)amides (R) as substituents for the stabilisation of phospha-germynes and phospha-stannynes (R-Ge≡P and R-Sn≡P, respectively) is described. Such species can be transiently generated by photolysis of the phosphaketene precursors (RE(PCO); E=Ge, Sn). Utilisation of bulky amides R1 and R2 (R1 =Ar**NSi(OtBu)3 , where Ar**=2,6-bis[bis(4-tert-butylphenyl)methyl]-4-methylphenyl; R2 =Ar***NSi(iPr)3 , where Ar***=2,6-bis[bis(3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)methyl]-4-methylphenyl) facilitates the formation of diphosphene-type dimers, [(RGe)P]2 and [(RSn)P]2 . In an effort to circumvent dimerisation, the bulkier R3 substituent (R3 =Ar***NSi(4-tert-butylphenyl)3 ) was employed in an analogous series of experiments. This affords cyclic germylenes and stannylenes due to insertion of the terminal phosphide into Si-C bonds of the R3 substituent, which in case of the stannylene could act as a trap for another R3 -Sn≡P moiety. All attempts to isolate terminal phosphide species were unsuccessful due to the reactivity of such compounds towards the organic periphery of the bulky amides, highlighting the limitations of highly sterically demanding functionalities.

Abstract
Formal addition of diazomethane's terminal nitrogen atom to the 9,10-positions of anthracene yields H2CN2A (1, A = C14H10 or anthracene).
Formal addition of diazomethane's terminal nitrogen atom to the 9,10-positions of anthracene yields H2CN2A (1, A = C14H10 or anthracene). The synthesis of this hydrazone is reported from Carpino's hydrazine H2N2A through treatment with paraformaldehyde. Compound 1 has been found to be an easy-to-handle solid that does not exhibit dangerous heat or shock sensitivity. Effective umpolung of the diazomethane unit imbues 1 with electrophilicity at the methylene carbon center. Its reactivity with nucleophiles such as H2CPPh3 and N-heterocyclic carbenes is exploited for C
