Abstract
Using a straightforward sequence of diphosphonylation and a Pd-catalysed concerted-metalation-deprotonation (CMD), a synthetic strategy towards polyaromatic phosphorus containing heterocycles was developed. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of new azaphosphaphenalenes, using easily accessible palladium catalysts and starting materials. The key tetrahydroquinoline intermediates of the reaction were synthesised via a fast and effective procedure and could be isolated as such, or further reacted towards the target polyaromatic structures. The obtained products showed interesting luminescent properties and their emission, excitation and quantum yields were evaluated.

Abstract
In switchable molecular recognition, 1 O2 stimulus responsive receptors offer a unique structural change that is rarely exploited. The employed [4+2] reaction between 1 O2 and anthracene derivatives is quantitative, reversible and easily implemented. To evaluate the full potential of this new stimulus, a non-macrocyclic anthracene-based host was designed for the modular binding of cations. The structural investigation showed that 1 O2 controlled the atropisomerism in an on/off fashion within the pair of hosts. The binding studies revealed higher association constants for the endoperoxide receptor compared to the parent anthracene, due to a more favoured preorganization of the recognition site. The fatigue of the 1 O2 switchable hosts and their complexes was monitored over five cycles of cycloaddition/cycloreversion.

Abstract
The synthesis of π-extended pyrene-based luminescent compounds containing two six-membered phosphacycles has been realized through a two-step synthesis. It involves a Cu(II)-mediated double cyclization of tertiary diphosphane derivatives to afford dicationic molecules with quaternized phosphorus centers. Subsequent transformation of diphosphonium species into the corresponding P-oxide derivatives has been successfully achieved through Pd(0)-assisted cleavage of the P-Ph bonds, which opens a promising way for the functionalization of polyaromatic P-systems.

Abstract
Tunable electron-accepting properties of the cationic phosphorus center, its geometry and unique preparative chemistry that allows combining this unit with diversity of π-conjugated motifs, define the appealing photophysical and electrochemical characteristics of organophosphorus ionic chromophores. This Minireview summarizes the achievements in the synthesis of the π-extended molecules functionalized with P-cationic fragments, modulation of their properties by means of structural modification, and emphasizes the important effect of cation-anion interactions, which can drastically change physical behavior of these two-component systems.

Abstract
The bis-ortho-thioether 9,10-bis[(o-methylthio)phenyl]anthracene was synthesized as a syn-atropisomer, as revealed by X-ray diffraction. This alkylaryl thioether ligand (L) formed different macrocyclic complexes by coordination with silver(I) salts depending on the nature of the anion: M2L2 for AgOTf and AgOTFA, M6L4 for AgNO3. A discrete M2L complex was obtained in the presence of bulky PPh3AgOTf. These silver(I) complexes adopted similar structures in solution and in the solid state. As each sulfur atom in the ligand is prochiral, macrocycles L2M2 were obtained as mixtures of diastereoisomers, depending on the configurations of the sulfur atoms coordinated to silver cations. The X-ray structures of the two L2·(AgOTf)2 stereoisomers highlighted their different geometry. The catalytic activity of all silver(I) complexes was effective under homogeneous conditions in two tandem addition/cycloisomerization of alkynes using 0.5–1 mol % of catalytic loading.

Abstract
Rationally designed cationic phospha-polyaromatic fluorophores were prepared through intramolecular cyclization of the tertiary ortho-(acene)phenylene-phosphines mediated by CuII triflate. As a result of phosphorus quaternization, heterocyclic phosphonium salts 1 c-3 c, derived from naphthalene, phenanthrene, and anthracene cores, exhibited very intense blue to green fluorescence (Φem =0.38-0.99) and high photostability in aqueous medium. The structure-emission relationship was further investigated by tailoring the electron-donating functions to the anthracene moiety to give dyes 4 c-6 c with charge-transfer character. The latter significantly decreases the emission energy to reach near-IR region. Thus, the intramolecular phosphacyclization renders an ultra-wide tuning of fluorescence from 420 nm (1 c) to 780 nm (6 c) in solution, extended to 825 nm for 6 c in the solid state with quantum efficiency of approximately 0.07. The physical behavior of these new dyes was studied spectroscopically, crystallographically, and electrochemically, whereas computational analysis was used to correlate the experimental data with molecular electronic structures. The excellent stability, water solubility, and attractive photophysical characteristics make these phosphonium heterocycles powerful tools in cell imaging.
