Abstract
Optoelectronic devices based on lanthanide-containing materials are an emergent area of research due to imminent interest in a new generation of diode materials, optical and magnetic sensors, and ratiometric thermometers. Tailoring material properties through the employment of photo- or thermochromic moieties is a powerful approach that requires a deep fundamental understanding of possible cooperativity between lanthanide-based metal centers and integrated switchable units. In this work, we probe this concept through the synthesis, structural analysis, and spectroscopic characterization of novel photochromic lanthanide-based metal-organic materials containing noncoordinatively integrated photoresponsive 4,4'-azopyridine between lanthanide-based metal centers. As a result, a photophysical material response tailored on demand through the incorporation of photochromic compounds within a rigid matrix was investigated. The comprehensive analysis of photoresponsive metal-organic materials includes single-crystal X-ray diffraction and diffuse reflectance spectroscopic studies that provide guiding principles necessary for understanding photochromic unit-lanthanide-based metal-organic framework (MOF) cooperativity. Furthermore, steady-state and time-resolved diffuse reflectance spectroscopic studies revealed a rapid rate of photoresponsive moiety attenuation upon its integration within the rigid matrix of lanthanide-based MOFs in comparison with that in solution, highlighting a unique role and synergy that occurred between stimuli-responsive moieties and the lanthanide-based MOF platform, allowing for tunability and control of material photoisomerization kinetics.

Abstract
A one-dimensional (1D) ladder-like coordination polymer {NH4[{Cu(bpy)}2(C2O4)Fe(C2O4)3]·H2O}n (1; bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) containing [Cu(bpy)(μ-C2O4)Cu(bpy)]2+ cationic units linked by oxalate groups of [Fe(C2O4)3]3- building blocks was investigated as a new type of photoactive solid-state system. It exhibits a photocoloration effect when exposed to direct sunlight or UV/vis irradiation. The photochromic properties and mechanism were studied by powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, UV/vis diffuse reflectance, IR and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, magnetization and impedance measurements, and density functional theory calculations. The process of photochromism involves simultaneous intramolecular electron transfers from the oxalate ligand to Fe(III) and to [CuII(bpy)(μ-C2O4)CuII(bpy)]2+, leading to the reduction of the metal centers to the electronic states Fe(II) and Cu(I), accompanied by the release of gaseous CO2.

Abstract
Seven new inorganic-organic coordination polymer compounds have been synthesized and their structures are determined by single-crystal structure determination. The compounds were prepared by the sequential assembly of a [Cu6(mna)6]6- moiety in the presence of a Mn salt and a secondary amine ligand. Of the seven compounds, [{Cu6(mna)6}Mn3(H2O)(H2O)1.5]·5.5H2O (I), [{Cu6(mna)6}Mn3(H2O)(Im)1.5]·3.5H2O (Ia), [{Cu6(mna)6}{Mn(BPY)(H2O)}2{Mn(H2O)4}]·2H2O (III), and [{Cu6(mna)6}{Mn(BPE)0.5(H2O)2}2{Mn(BPE)(H2O)2}] (IV) have a three-dimensional structure, whereas [{Cu6(mna)4.5(Hmna)1.5}{Mn(BPA)(H2O)2}{Mn(H2O)}]{Mn0.25(H2O)3}·7H2O (II), [{Cu6(mna)6}{Mn(4-BPDB)0.5H2O}{Mn(H2O)2}].{Mn(H2O)6}·6H2O (V), and [{Cu6(mna)4(Hmna)2}·{Mn(H2O)3}2]·(4-APY)2·6H2O (VI) have a two-dimensional structure. Some of the prepared compounds exhibit structures that closely resemble the classical inorganic structures, such as NaCl (Ia, III), NiAs (I), and CdI2 (IV and VI). The stabilization of such simple structures from the assembly of octahedral Cu6S6 clusters and different Mn species and aromatic nitrogen-containing ligands suggests the subtle interplay between the constituent reactants. The compounds were examined for the multicomponent Hantzsch reaction, which gave the product in good yields. The compounds, II and VI, on heating to 70 °C change color reversibly from pale yellow to deep red, which suggests the possible use of these compounds as thermochromic materials. The present study suggests that the Cu6S6 octahedral clusters can be assembled into structures that resemble classical inorganic structures.

Abstract
Monitoring and shielding of X-ray radiation are of paramount importance across diverse fields. However, they are frequently realized in separate protocols and a single material integrating both functions remained elusive. Herein, a hexanuclear cluster [Th6 (µ3 -OH)4 (µ3 -O)4 (H2 O)6 ](pba)6 (HCOO)6 (Th-pba-0D) incorporating high-Z thorium cations and 3-(pyridin-4-yl)benzoate ligands that can function as a brand-new dual-module platform for visible detection and efficient shielding of ionizing radiation is demonstrated. Th-pba-0D exhibits rather unique reversible radiochromism upon alternating X-ray and UV irradiation. Moreover, the millimeter scale crystal size of Th-pba-0D renders the penetration depth of X-ray visible to naked eye and leads to the unearthing of its high X-ray attenuation efficiency. Indeed, the shielding efficacy of Th-pba-0D is comparable to that of lead glass containing 40% PbO, and a Th-pba-0D pellet with a thickness of merely 1.2 mm can shield 99.73% X-ray (16 keV). These studies portend the possible utilization of thorium-bearing materials as a bifunctional platform for radiation detection and shielding.

Abstract
The use of vapor-responsive chromic materials in sensing applications for the detection of harmful volatile organic chemicals is rapidly expanding. Herein, four new amino-functionalized Cu(I) coordination polymers of [CuI(pyt-NH2)]n (1) and (2) and [CuSCN(pyt-NH2)]n (3) and (4) (where pyt-NH2 = 2-amino-5-(4-pyridinyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazole) were successfully synthesized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that 1 and 2 are iodo-based polymorphs, while 3 and 4 are thiocyanato-based polymorphs. They possess densely diverse crystalline architectures decorated by uncoordinated amino groups as a binding site. Also, 1-4 show a variety of color and luminescence based on the structural diversity. Remarkably, 1 and 2 undergo the change of color and naked-eye solid-state luminescence in response to formaldehyde (FA) vapor, demonstrating simultaneous vapochromism and vapoluminescence. The chromic Cu(I) coordination polymers in this work present for the first time dual-mode vapochromism and vapoluminescence in a highly selective response to FA vapor. The responsive mechanism has been clarified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and luminescence lifetime measurements, which reveal carbinolamine formation via the specific reaction between FA and the active amino groups of coordinated pyt-NH2. The carbinolamine formation can trigger the structural transformation of 1 and 2, leading to the concurrently selective vapochromism and vapoluminescence induced by FA vapor.

Abstract
Chromic materials have the potential to be used in a variety of applications, including memory devices and sensors. Despite fact that stimuli-responsive chromic materials have been widely reported to date, fabricating chromic materials that can be responsive to multiple external stimuli remains a challenge. Herein, a new multistimuli responsive chromic coordination polymer of {[Ni(pzt)2(H2O)2](H2O)(DMF)}n (1); Hpzt = 5-(3-pyridyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thiol, was successfully synthesized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that 1 exhibits a soft crystalline 3-dimenional (3D) supramolecular framework generated by weakly interlayered stacking interactions between 2D coordination polymers. Compound 1 revealed unprecedented naked-eye mechanochromism, vapochromism, and thermochromism in response to multiple external stimuli including manual grinding, amine and alcohol vapors, and heat, respectively. The chromism related to the structural feature was clarified by SC-XRD, PXRD, TGA, elemental analysis, and spectroscopic techniques.

Abstract
A supramolecular network [H4bdcbpy(NO3)2·H2O] (H4bdcbpy = 1,1′-Bis(3,5-dicarboxybenzyl)-4,4′-bipyridinium) (1) was prepared by a zwitterionic viologen carboxylate ligand in hydrothermal synthesis conditions. The as-synthesized (1) has been well characterized by means of single-crystal/powder X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis and infrared and UV-vis spectroscopy. This compound possesses a three-dimensional supramolecular structure, formed by the hydrogen bond and π–π interaction between the organic ligands. This compound shows photochromic properties under UV light, as well as vapochromic behavior upon exposure to volatile amines and ammonia, in which the electron transfer from electron-rich parts to the electron-deficient viologen unit gives rise to colored radicals. Moreover, the intensive intermolecular H-bonding networks in 1 endows it with a proton conductivity of 1.06 × 10−3 S cm−1 in water at 90 °C.

Abstract
Acquiring fundamental knowledge of properties of actinide-based materials is a necessary step to create new possibilities for addressing the current challenges in the nuclear energy and nuclear waste sectors. In this report, we established a photophysics-electronics correlation for actinide-containing metal-organic frameworks (An-MOFs) as a function of excitation wavelength, for the first time. A stepwise approach for dynamically modulating electronic properties was applied for the first time towards actinide-based heterometallic MOFs through integration of photochromic linkers. Optical cycling, modeling of density of states near the Fermi edge, conductivity measurements, and photoisomerization kinetics were employed to shed light on the process of tailoring optoelectronic properties of An-MOFs. Furthermore, the first photochromic MOF-based field-effect transistor, in which the field-effect response could be changed through light exposure, was constructed. As a demonstration, the change in current upon light exposure was sufficient to operate a two-LED fail-safe indicator circuit.

Abstract
Thermochromic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising functional materials for a wide range of applications due to their ability to exhibit color variation under external temperature stimuli, yet the development of them with high cyclability and efficient regeneration processes remains challenging. Here, presented is a rare example of an ultrastable Ni(II)-MOF exhibiting an unprecedented reversible four-step color change between two complementary colors in a wide temperature range, which could be repeated for at least 500 cycles without losing crystallinity and thermochromic performance. Notably, the regeneration can be achieved within 1 min by simply letting the crystals cool naturally in the air, facilitated by the unique nature of the channels' inner surface. The reversible thermochromic behavior is owing to a series of reversible crystal structure changes with temperature, including the stepwise dehydration/rehydration process, and structural changes. This work facilitates the future development of more MOF-based reversible thermochromic materials with excellent performance and improved practical applicability.

Abstract
Rational design and synthesis of new photochromic sensors have been active research areas of inquiry, particularly on how to predict and tailor their properties and functionalities. Herein, two thulium 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine-4'-carboxylate (TPC)-functionalized metal-organic hybrids, Tm(TPC)2(HCOO)(H2O) (TmTPC-1) and Tm(TPC)(HCOO)2 (TmTPC-2) with different photochromic response behaviors, have been successfully prepared, allowing for straightforward investigations of the structure-property correlation. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction and electron paramagnetic resonance analyses revealed that the incorporation of a unique dangling decorating TPC unit in TmTPC-1 offers a shorter and more accessible π-π interaction pathway between the adjacent TPC moieties than that in TmTPC-2. Such a structural feature leads to the production of radical species via a photoinduced intermolecular electron-transfer (IeMCT) process upon UV or X-ray irradiation, which ultimately endows TmTPC-1 with a rather unusual UV and X-ray dual photochromism. A linear relationship between the change of UV-vis absorbance intensity and X-ray dose was established, making TmTPC-1 a promising dosimeter for X-ray radiation with an extremely high energy threshold (30 kGy). To advance the development for real-world application, we have fabricated polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes incorporating TmTPC-1 for functioning either as a UV imager or as an X-ray radiation indicator. Lastly, TmTPC-1 exhibits high thermal stability (up to 400 °C) and radioresistance (at least 900 kGy), and also excellent reversibility of photochromic transformation (at least 5 cycles).

Abstract
Herein, we present the light-induced synthesis and characterization of a La3+/spiropyran derivative complex (LaMC) and its application as a catalyst when incorporated into electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) fibers. In addition to experimental methods, computational calculations were also essential to better understand the structure and electronic characteristics of LaMC. The LaMC complex was identified as a 10-coordinated structure with the La3+ ion coordinated by four oxygens from the phenolate and the carbonyl of the carboxyl acid group from both MC ligands and by six oxygens from three nitrate ligands. In addition, LaMC was capable of getting reversibly isomerized by UV or visible light cycling. All PCL fibers were successively obtained, and their morphologies, surface properties, and catalytic behavior were studied. Results showed that PCL/LaMC fibers were capable of catalyzing bis(2,4-dinitrophenyl)phosphate degradation efficiently. Complete hydrolysis was accomplished in only 1.5 days relative to the half-life time of 35 days for the uncatalyzed hydrolysis at pH 8.1 and 25 °C.

Abstract
When fabricating macroscopic devices exploiting the properties of organic chromophores, the corresponding molecules need to be condensed into a solid material. Since optical absorption properties are often strongly affected by interchromophore interactions, solids with a well-defined structure carry substantial advantages over amorphous materials. Here, the metal-organic framework (MOF)-based approach is presented. By appropriate functionalization, most organic chromophores can be converted to function as linkers, which can coordinate to metal or metal-oxo centers so as to yield stable, crystalline frameworks. Photoexcitations in such chromophore-based MOFs are surveyed, with a special emphasis on light-switchable MOFs from photochromic molecules. The conventional powder form of MOFs obtained using solvothermal approaches carries certain disadvantages for optical applications, such as limited efficiency resulting from absorption and light scattering caused by the (micrometer-sized) powder particles. How these problems can be avoided by using MOF thin films is demonstrated.

Abstract
In this Review, we showcase the upsurge in the development and fundamental photophysical studies of more than 100 metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as versatile stimuli-responsive platforms. The goal is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the field of photoresponsive MOFs while delving into the underlying photophysical properties of various classes of photochromic molecules including diarylethene, azobenzene, and spiropyran as well as naphthalenediimide and viologen derivatives integrated inside a MOF matrix as part of a framework backbone, as a ligand side group, or as a guest. In particular, the geometrical constraints, photoisomerization rates, and electronic structures of photochromic molecules integrated inside a rigid MOF scaffold are discussed. Thus, this Review reflects on the challenges and opportunities of using photoswitchable MOFs in next-generation multifunctional stimuli-responsive materials while highlighting their use in optoelectronics, erasable inks, or as the next generation of sensing devices.

Abstract
Tetraphosphine ligand dpppda reacts with AgNO3 to generate two 1D coordination polymers containing cubic and chair-like [Ag4(NO3)4] clusters. ESR spectroscopy supported by DFT calculations indicated the presence of dpppda˙+, a Wurster's blue - like radical cation formed by intramolecular ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT). This LMCT results in higher AgI → Ag0 potentials and good photocurrent responses.

Abstract
The solvothermal reactions of 5,5′-(1,4-phenylenebis(methyleneoxy))diisophthalic acid (H4L) and the N-donor ancillary ligand 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethyl-4,4′-bipyrazole (bpz) with cadmium(ii) salts at two different reaction temperatures yielded two new metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), viz., [Cd(H2L)(bpz)]n (1) and [Cd2(H4L)(L)(bpz)2]n (2), which have been characterized by FTIR and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The single crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed that 1 displays a 3-periodic network with monometallic SBU, while 2 exhibits a 3-periodic network with a 2-fold interpenetration feature. The effects of variation in reaction temperature on the architecture of MOFs 1 and 2 have been discussed. The luminescence investigation indicates that both 1 and 2 displayed good turn-off luminescence sensing against nitroaromatic compounds (NACs), especially m-nitrophenol (MNP), via a decrease in their luminescence intensities with a Ksv value of 6.43 × 103 for 1 and 2.03 × 104 for 2 and LOD values of 1.09 and 0.81 ppm for 1 and 2, respectively. The plausible mechanism for the decline in luminescence intensity of the MOFs with NACs has been addressed using theoretical calculations. The photocatalytic properties for both the MOFs demonstrated that they display efficient photocatalytic performances to degrade methyl violet (MV) under UV irradiation. The plausible mechanism through which these MOFs exhibited photocatalytic properties has been suggested using band gap calculations. Two new d10-based Cd(ii) MOFs were synthesized and their photoluminescence sensing to selectively detect m-nitrophenol (MNP) and ability to decompose the organic dye methyl violet (MV) were explored.![]()

Abstract
In this article, we describe the synthesis, characterization, and optical properties of a photochromic-guest-incorporated metal-organic framework (MOF). The photochromic guest molecule, 2-phenylazopyridine (PAP), was introduced into a pre-synthesized porous crystalline host MOF, [Zn2(1,4-bdc)2(dabco)] n (1). The successful embedment of PAP has been confirmed by elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction measurements, IR spectroscopy, etc. The number of PAP molecules per unit cell of host was 1.0, as evidenced by elemental and thermogravimetric analyses of the host-guest composite, 1⊃PAP. The 1⊃PAP composite did not adsorb N2, revealed by the adsorption isotherm of 1⊃PAP, which indicates the pore blockage by the close contact of the host framework with the guest PAP in the trans form. The light-induced trans/cis isomerization with partial reversibility of the guest molecule (PAP) in this hybrid host-guest compound (1⊃PAP) has been investigated by detailed IR spectroscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy. The structural transformation from tetragonal in 1 to orthorhombic in 1⊃PAP exhibits dynamic nature of the framework upon inclusion of guest in the framework, which remarkably becomes nonresponsive with the photoirradiation of guest PAP, retaining its orthorhombic structure in the photoirradiated complex, 1⊃PAP(UV).
