Abstract
The on-surface synthesis of an isomer of undecacene, bearing two four-membered rings and two para-quinodimethane moieties, starting from a tetramethyl-substituted diepoxy precursor, is presented. The transformation implies a thermal double deoxygenation followed by a stepwise double dehydrogenation reaction on the Au(111) surface, locally induced by inelastic tunneling electrons. This results in the transformation of para-dimethylbenzene moieties into non-aromatic para-quinodimethanes. The structures and electronic properties of the intermediate and final products are investigated at the single molecule level with high spatial resolution, using both scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and non-contact atomic force microscopy. The experimental results are supported by density functional theory calculations.

Abstract
Pyrene and acene derivatives are an important source of materials for optoelectronic device applications both as emitters and organic semiconductors. The mobility of major charge carriers is correlated with the coupling constants of the respective major charge carrier as well as the relaxation energies. Herein, we have applied range-separated density functionals for the estimation of said values. A series of five alkylated derivatives of pyrene laterally extended by heteroaromatic or phenyl groups were explored and contrasted to nascent pyrene, alkylated pyrene and tetracene. The ground state geometries along with absorption properties and relaxation energies are presented as well as a discussion of the suitability of the material toward hole and electron transport materials.

Abstract
In this paper, a systematic study of the electronic, optical, thermodynamic, optoelectronic, and nonlinear optical properties with RHF, B3LYP, wB97XD and BPBE methods using the cc-pVDZ basis set have been described to investigate the influence of fluorine (F) atom, which is an electron donor, on the circumanthracene (C40H16). Global reactivity descriptors, hole and electron transport properties were also calculated and compared with other studies on the same molecule. DFT/B3LYP results show that the undoped C40H16 molecule (Egap = 2.135 eV) and its fluorine-doped derivatives (C40F16 and C40H10F6) are semiconducting materials. However, doping the C40H16 molecule with the fluorine atom, partially or totally, favors the creation of a strong donor-acceptor system by considerably reducing its energy gap (Egap). The energy gap values of molecules doped using DFT/B3LYP method are 2.020 eV and 2.081 eV for the C40F16 and C40H10F6 molecules, respectively. These gap energies are below 3 eV, which favours the electronic properties of these molecules. They can be used to design organic solar cells. The nonlinear optical parameters were calculated and compared with those of urea. The values of βmol and μ calculated for C40F16 and C40H10F6 are higher than those of urea; this shows that these two materials have good nonlinear optical properties and therefore, are very good candidates for the design of optoelectronics and photonics devices. Futhermore, our results show that the perfluorination effect on the circumanthracene molecule increases the hole and electron reorganization energies, the vertical and adiabatic electron affinities and ionization energies, the optoelectronic and nonlinear optical properties, the transition excitation energy and the reactivity indices. The reorganization energies values suggest that these materials have promising transport properties. The natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis was also performed to determine the stability energy and charge delocalization in molecules. The theoretical results of the compounds studied in our work are in agreement with the experimental results. This confirms their molecular structures.

Abstract
Heteroatom-centered diradical(oid)s have been in the focus of molecular main group chemistry for nearly 30 years. During this time, the diradical concept has evolved and the focus has shifted to the rational design of diradical(oid)s for specific applications. This review article begins with some important theoretical considerations of the diradical and tetraradical concept. Based on these theoretical considerations, the design of diradical(oid)s in terms of ligand choice, steric, symmetry, electronic situation, element choice, and reactivity is highlighted with examples. In particular, heteroatom-centered diradical reactions are discussed and compared with closed-shell reactions such as pericyclic additions. The comparison between closed-shell reactivity, which proceeds in a concerted manner, and open-shell reactivity, which proceeds in a stepwise fashion, along with considerations of diradical(oid) design, provides a rational understanding of this interesting and unusual class of compounds. The application of diradical(oid)s, for example in small molecule activation or as molecular switches, is also highlighted. The final part of this review begins with application-related details of the spectroscopy of diradical(oid)s, followed by an update of the heteroatom-centered diradical(oid)s and tetraradical(oid)s published in the last 10 years since 2013.

Abstract
The chemical stability and the low-lying singlet and triplet excited states of BN-n-acenes (n = 1-7) were studied using single reference and multireference methodologies. From the calculations, descriptors such as the singlet-triplet splitting, the natural orbital (NO) occupations and aromaticity indexes are used to provide structural and energetic analysis. The boron and nitrogen atoms form an isoelectronic pair of two carbon atoms, which was used for the complete substitution of these units in the acene series. The structural analysis confirms the effects originated from the insertion of a uniform pattern of electronegativity difference within the molecular systems. The covalent bonds tend to be strongly polarized which does not happen in the case of a carbon-only framework. This effect leads to a charge transfer between neighbor atoms resulting in a more strengthened structure, keeping the aromaticity roughly constant along the chain. The singlet-triplet splitting also agrees with this stability trend, maintaining a consistent gap value for all molecules. The BN-n-acenes molecules possess a ground state with monoconfigurational character indicating their electronic stability. The low-lying singlet excited states have charge transfer character, which proceeds from nitrogen to boron.

Abstract
On-surface synthesis has recently emerged as a powerful strategy to design conjugated polymers previously precluded in conventional solution chemistry. Here, an N-containing pentacene-based precursor (tetraazapentacene) is ex-professo synthesized endowed with terminal dibromomethylene (:CBr2 ) groups to steer homocoupling via dehalogenation on metallic supports. Combined scanning probe microscopy investigations complemented by theoretical calculations reveal how the substrate selection drives different reaction mechanisms. On Ag(111) the dissociation of bromine atoms at room temperature triggers the homocoupling of tetraazapentacene units together with the binding of silver adatoms to the nitrogen atoms of the monomers giving rise to a N-containing conjugated coordination polymer (P1). Subsequently, P1 undergoes ladderization at 200 °C, affording a pyrrolopyrrole-bridged conjugated polymer (P2). On Au(111) the formation of the intermediate polymer P1 is not observed and, instead, after annealing at 100 °C, the conjugated ladder polymer P2 is obtained, revealing the crucial role of metal adatoms on Ag(111) as compared to Au(111). Finally, on Ag(100) the loss of :CBr2 groups affords the formation of tetraazapentacene monomers, which coexist with polymer P1. Our results contribute to introduce protocols for the synthesis of N-containing conjugated polymers, illustrating the selective role of the metallic support in the underlying reaction mechanisms.

Abstract
Transparent conducting materials are an essential component of optoelectronic devices. It is proven difficult, however, to develop high-performance materials that combine the often-incompatible properties of transparency and conductivity, especially for p-type-doped materials. In this work, we have employed a large set of molecular semiconductors extracted from the Cambridge Structural Database to evaluate the likelihood of transparent conducting material technology based on p-type-doped molecular crystals. Candidates are identified imposing the condition of high highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level (for the material to be easily dopable), high charge carrier mobility (for the material to display large conductivity when doped), and a high threshold for energy absorption (for the material to absorb radiation only in the ultraviolet). The latest condition is found to be the most stringent criterion in a virtual screening protocol on a database composed of structures with sufficiently wide two-dimensional (2D) electronic bands. Calculation of excited-state energy is shown to be essential as the HOMO-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) gap cannot be reliably used to predict the transparency of this material class. Molecular semiconductors with desirable mobility are transparent because they display either forbidden electronic transition(s) to the lower excited states or small exchange energy between the frontier orbitals. Both features are difficult to design but can be found in a good number of compounds through virtual screening.

Abstract
Heteroatom substitution in acenes allows tailoring of their remarkable electronic properties, expected to include spin-polarization and magnetism for larger members of the acene family. Here, we present a strategy for the on-surface synthesis of three undecacene analogs substituted with four nitrogen atoms on an Au(111) substrate, by employing specifically designed diethano-bridged precursors. A similarly designed precursor is used to synthesize the pristine undecacene molecule. By comparing experimental features of scanning probe microscopy with ab initio simulations, we demonstrate that the ground state of the synthesized tetraazaundecacene has considerable open-shell character on Au(111). Additionally, we demonstrate that the electronegative nitrogen atoms induce a considerable shift in energy level alignment compared to the pristine undecacene, and that the introduction of hydro-aza groups causes local anti-aromaticity in the synthesized compounds. Our work provides access to the precise fabrication of nitrogen-substituted acenes and their analogs, potential building-blocks of organic electronics and spintronics, and a rich playground to explore π-electron correlation.

Abstract
Combining solution-based and surface-assisted synthesis, we demonstrate the first synthesis of NBN-doped bis-tetracene (NBN-BT) and peri-tetracene (NBN-PT). The chemical structures are clearly elucidated by high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in combination with noncontact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM). Scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) characterizations reveal that NBN-BT and NBN-PT possess higher energy gaps than bis-tetracene and peri-tetracene. Interestingly, NBN-BT can undergo stepwise one-electron oxidation and convert into its corresponding radical cation and then to its dication. The energy gap of the NBN-BT dication is similar to that of bis-tetracene, indicating their isoelectronic relationship. Moreover, a similar energy gap between the NBN-PT dication and peri-tetracene can be predicted by DFT calculations. This work provides a novel synthesis along with characterizations of multi-NBN-doped zigzag-edged peri-acenes with tunable electronic properties.

Abstract
Tuning of the electronic spectra of carbon dots by means of inserting heteroatoms into the π-conjugated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) system is a popular tool to achieve a broad range of absorption and emission frequencies. Especially nitrogen atoms have been used successfully for that purpose. Despite the significant progress achieved with these procedures, the prediction of specific shifts in the UV-vis spectra and the understanding of the electronic transitions is still a challenging task. In this work, high-level quantum chemical methods based on multireference (MR) and single-reference (SR) methods have been used to predict the effect of different nitrogen doping patterns inserted into the prototypical PAH pyrene on its absorption spectrum. Furthermore, a simple classification scheme based on valence bond (VB) theory and the Clar sextet rule in combination with the harmonic oscillator measure of aromaticity (HOMA) index was applied to arrange the different doping structures into groups and rationalize their electronic properties. The results show a wide variety of mostly redshifts in the spectra as compared to the pristine pyrene case. The most interesting doping structures with the largest red shifts leading to absorption energies below one eV could be readily explained by the occurrence of diradical VB structures in combination with Clar sextets. Moreover, analysis of the electronic transitions computed with MR methods showed that several of the low-lying excited states possess double-excitation character, which cannot be realized by the popular SR methods and, thus, are simply absent in the calculated spectra.

Abstract
Double ruthenium(II)-catalyzed alkyne annulations of quinones were accomplished. Thus, a strategy is reported that provides step-economical access to valuable quinones with a wide range of applications. C-H/N-H activations for alkyne annulations of naphthoquinones provided challenging polycyclic quinoidal compounds by forming four new bonds in one step. The singular power of the thus-obtained compounds was reflected by their antileukemic activity.

Abstract
We report a comparative and systematic computational analysis on the electronic and optical properties of the boron-nitride-made (BN) counterparts of the carbon-made circumacenes. Recently, these planar molecules have attracted interest for applications in the condensed matter physics domain. In particular, we focus on the five first members of this BN-family (from BN-coronene to BN-circumpentacene) presenting a comparison with their carbon analogues. For all the systems investigated, we calculate different electronic properties and the optical absorption spectra, performing all electron Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Time Dependent-DFT (TD-DFT) calculations. In the context of ab initio calculations we select a localized Gaussian basis-set matched with a hybrid exchange-correlation functional. We discuss possible implications of the observed BN cluster properties, which could be an alternative material or complementar as compared to their carbon analogues. In particular, concerning the optical properties, we have found that the main difference between the two families is that the BN molecules absorb in the UV, rather than in the visible as happens for the C-made parents. Moreover, we demonstrate that the electronic and optical observables of the BN clusters are nearly independent of the cluster size in contrast to what happens for their carbonaceous counterparts.

Abstract
Aromaticity is a multivariable concept in organic chemistry that plays a central role for understanding the structure, stability, and reactivity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Several types of PAHs are characterized as singlet biradicaloid species and their chemical stability is intimately linked to the degree of aromatic character. In this study, theoretically designed routes to tune the biradical character (and thereby its chemical stability) of nitrogen-substituted octacenes have been investigated on the basis of the high-level multireference averaged quadratic coupled-cluster MR-AQCC method necessary for the appropriate description of polyradicaloid systems. The influence of nitrogen centers on the aromaticity of octacene is probed through structural (HOMA) and electron localization (ELF) indices by comparing the N- against NH-doping cases. These analyses reveal that the aromaticity and biradical character of octacene is only slightly affected by replacing one pair of CH groups with N atoms, i.e., by N-doping. However, a significant aromatic stabilization can be obtained when NH-doping is applied at the inner octacene rings; this is also accompanied by an overall decrease of the open-shell character, as evidenced by the gradual quenching of the unpaired electrons and increase in the singlet-triplet splittings when the NH doping groups are moved toward the center of the octacene molecule. Our findings aid in the rational design of new PAH compounds with balanced biradicaloid character and chemical stability which is important, e.g., for practical applications in organic solar cells based on the singlet-fission mechanism.

Abstract
Zethrenes are interesting polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which possess unique optoelectronic and magnetic properties because of their singlet open-shell biradicaloid character, making them promising candidates for application in organic electronics. Tuning their properties is a key task in order to develop efficient compounds for practical use by balancing the desired biradicaloid character against its chemical instability. In this work, high-level theoretical multireference methods appropriate for the correct description of polyradicaloid systems are used to develop rules for doping of zethrenes by means of nitrogen taking heptazethrene (HZ) as a benchmark example. The results of the quantum chemical calculations have been concentrated on a series of quantitative descriptors such as unpaired densities and singlet-triplet (S-T) splittings. They clearly indicate different regions in the HZ where N-doping can either lead to strong enhancement of the biradicaloid character or to strong quenching towards a closed shell state. A wide scale of varying open-shell character is accessible from the different doping positions. It is shown that the S-T splittings correlate well with the total number of unpaired electrons in the medium range of biradicaloid character. For pronounced biradical character the S-T splitting decays to about zero with a margin of ±0.15 eV. In the opposite closed-shell limit, much larger S-T splittings of up to 3 eV are computed.
