Reaction dynamics of S(3P) with 1,3-butadiene and isoprene: crossed-beam scattering, low-temperature flow experiments, and high-level electronic structure calculations

Sulfur atoms serve as key players in diverse chemical processes, from astrochemistry at very low temperature to combustion at high temperature. Building upon our prior findings, showing cyclization to thiophenes following the reaction of ground-state sulfur atoms with dienes, we here extend this investigation to include many additional reaction products, guided by detailed theoretical predictions. The outcomes highlight the complex formation of products during intersystem crossing (ISC) to the singlet surfaces. Here, we employed crossed-beam velocity map imaging and high-level ab initio methods to explore the reaction of S(3P) with 1,3-butadiene and isoprene under single-collision conditions and in low-temperature flows. For the butadiene reaction, our experimental results show the formation of thiophene via H2 loss, a 2H-thiophenyl radical through H loss, and thioketene through ethene loss at a slightly higher collision energy compared to previous observations. Complementary Chirped-Pulse Fourier-Transform mmWave spectroscopy (CP-FTmmW) measurements in a uniform flow confirmed the formation of thioketene in the reaction at 20 K. For the isoprene reaction, we observed analogous products along with the 2H-thiophenyl radical arising from methyl loss and C3H4S (loss of ethene or H2 + acetylene). CP-FTmmW detected the formation of thioformaldehyde via loss of 1,3-butadiene, again in the 20 K flow. Coupled-cluster calculations on the pathways found by the automated kinetic workflow code KinBot support these findings and indicate ISC to the singlet surface, leading to the generation of various long-lived intermediates, including 5-membered heterocycles.

Copper-catalyzed remote double functionalization of allenynes

Addition reactions of molecules with conjugated or non-conjugated multiple unsaturated C-C bonds are very attractive yet challenging due to the versatile issues of chemo-, regio-, and stereo-selectivities. Especially for the readily available conjugated allenyne compounds, the reactivities have not been explored. The first example of copper-catalyzed 2,5-hydrofunctionalization and 2,5-difunctionalization of allenynes, which provides a facile access to versatile conjugated vinylic allenes with a C-B or C-Si bond, has been developed. This mild protocol has a broad substrate scope tolerating many synthetically useful functional groups. Due to the highly functionalized nature of the products, they have been demonstrated as platform molecules for the efficient syntheses of monocyclic products including poly-substituted benzenes, bicyclic compounds, and highly functionalized allene molecules.

State-to-State Dynamics in Mode-Selective Polyatomic Reactions

Chemical reactions are intrinsically quantum mechanical transformations of reactants to products. Recent experimental and theoretical advances have enabled the exploration of reaction dynamics with a quantum state resolution for both reactants and products. To this end, reactions involving more than three atoms are of particular interest, because they exhibit rich dynamics concerning the role of different reactant modes in controlling reactivity and product energy disposal. A clear understanding of the state-to-state dynamics requires new paradigms. In this Perspective, we examine some new concepts that have emerged from recent state-to-state studies of polyatomic reactions and illustrate the key role played by the transition state.

Experimental and Theoretical Studies of Hyperthermal N + O2 Collisions

The dynamics of hyperthermal N(4S) + O2 collisions were investigated both experimentally and theoretically. Crossed molecular beams experiments were performed at an average center-of-mass (c.m.) collision energy of ⟨Ecoll⟩ = 77.5 kcal mol-1, with velocity- and angle-resolved product detection by a rotatable mass spectrometer detector. Nonreactive (N + O2) and reactive (NO + O) product channels were identified. In the c.m. reference frame, the nonreactively scattered N atoms and reactively scattered NO molecules were both directed into the forward direction with respect to the initial direction of the reagent N atoms. On average, more than 90% of the available energy (⟨Eavl⟩ = 77.5 kcal mol-1) was retained in translation of the nonreactive products (N + O2), whereas a much smaller fraction of the available energy for the reactive pathway (⟨Eavl⟩ = 109.5 kcal mol-1) went into translation of the NO + O products, and the distribution of translational energies for this channel was broad, indicating extensive internal excitation in the nascent NO molecules. The experimentally derived c.m. translational energy and angular distributions of the reactive products suggested at least two dynamical pathways to the formation of NO + O. Quasiclassical trajectory (QCT) calculations were performed with a collision energy of Ecoll = 77 kcal mol-1 using two sets of potential energy surfaces, denoted as PES-I and PES-II, and these theoretical results were compared to each other and to the experimental results. PES-I is a reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) representation of multireference configurational interaction (MRCI) energies, while PES-II is a many-body permutation invariant polynomial (MB-PIP) fit of complete active space second order perturbation (CASPT2) points. The theoretical investigations were both consistent with the experimental suggestion of two dynamical pathways to produce NO + O, where reactive collisions may proceed on the doublet (12A') and quartet (14A') surfaces. When analyzed with this theoretical insight, the experimental c.m. translational energy and angular distributions were in reasonably good agreement with those predicted by the QCT calculations, although minor differences were observed which are discussed. Theoretical translational energy and angular distributions for the nonreactive N + O2 products matched the experimental translational energy and angular distributions almost quantitatively. Finally, relative yields for the nonreactive and reactive scattering channels were determined from the experiment and from both theoretical methods, and all results are in reasonable agreement.

Theoretical Insights into the Dynamics of Gas-Phase Bimolecular Reactions with Submerged Barriers

Much attention has been paid to the dynamics of both activated gas-phase bimolecular reactions, which feature monotonically increasing integral cross sections and Arrhenius kinetics, and their barrierless capture counterparts, which manifest monotonically decreasing integral cross sections and negative temperature dependence of the rate coefficients. In this Perspective, we focus on the dynamics of gas-phase bimolecular reactions with submerged barriers, which often involve radicals or ions and are prevalent in combustion, atmospheric chemistry, astrochemistry, and plasma chemistry. The temperature dependence of the rate coefficients for such reactions is often non-Arrhenius and complex, and the corresponding dynamics may also be quite different from those with significant barriers or those completely dominated by capture. Recent experimental and theoretical studies of such reactions, particularly at relatively low temperatures or collision energies, have revealed interesting dynamical behaviors, which are discussed here. The new knowledge enriches our understanding of the dynamics of these unusual reactions.

A combined crossed molecular beam and theorerical study of the O(3P,1D) + acrylonitrile (CH2CHCN) reactions and implications for combustion and extraterrestrial environments

Acrylonitrile (CH₂CHCN) is ubiquitous in space (molecular clouds, solar-type star forming regions, and circumstellar envelopes) and is also abundant in the upper atmosphere of Titan. The reaction O(³P) + CH₂CHCN can be of relevance in the chemistry of the interstellar medium because of the abundance of atomic oxygen. The oxidation of acrylonitrile is also important in combustion as the thermal decomposition of pyrrolic and pyridinic structures present in fuel-bound nitrogen generates many nitrogen-bearing compounds, including acrylonitrile. Despite its relevance, limited information exists on this reaction. We report a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the reactions of acrylonitrile with both ground ³P and excited ¹D atomic oxygen. From product angular and time-of-flight distributions in crossed molecular beam experiments with mass spectrometric detection at a collision energy, E_c, of 31.4 kJ mol^-1, we have identified the primary reaction products and determined their branching fractions (BFs). Theoretical calculations of the relevant triplet and singlet potential energy surfaces (PESs) were performed to interpret the experimental results and elucidate the reaction mechanism. Adiabatic statistical calculations of product BFs for the decomposition of the main triplet and singlet intermediates have been carried out. Combining the experimental and theoretical results, we conclude that the O(³P) reaction leads to two main product channels: (i) CH₂CNH (ketenimine) + CO (dominant with a BF of 0.87 ± 0.05), formed via efficient intersystem crossing from the entrance triplet PES to the underlying singlet PES, and (ii) HCOCHCN + H (minor, with a BF of 0.13 ± 0.05), occurring adiabatically on the triplet PES. Our study suggests the inclusion of this reaction as a possible destruction pathway of CH₂CHCN and a possible formation route of CH₂CNH in the interstellar medium. The O(¹D) + CH₂CHCN reaction mainly leads to the formation of CH₂CNH + CO adiabatically on the singlet PES. This result can improve models related to the chemistry of interstellar ice and cometary comas, where O(¹D) reactions can play a role. Overall, our results are expected to be useful for improving the models of combustion and extraterrestrial environments.

State-to-State Dynamics in Mode-Specific Reactions of Cl + CH3D(v1-I, v1-II, and v4 = 1; |10⟩): Loss of Memory or Not

Several decades of the study of reaction dynamics culminate in the concept of mode specificity and bond selectivity in polyatomic systems. Until very recently, the main concern of those studies has been total reactivity and little attention has been paid to the mode-specific effects on the more detailed product-state and angular distributions. Conventional wisdom would anticipate that the fine detail should reveal a more pronounced mode dependency. However, a few recent studies showed that the product distributions could appear to be surprisingly insensitive to the modes of internal excitation of reagents. This counterintuitive finding led to a concept of loss of memory. Here, we present detailed experimental results in the reactions of the Cl atom with three distinct stretching-excited CH₃D(v_CH3 = 1) reagents. In conjunction with the previous reports on various aspects of this reaction, such a comprehensive set of data enables us to perform an in-depth examination of the validity of this new concept.

Reactions O(3P, 1D) + HCCCN(X1Σ+) (Cyanoacetylene): Crossed-Beam and Theoretical Studies and Implications for the Chemistry of Extraterrestrial Environments

Cyanoacetylene (HCCCN), the first member of the cyanopolyyne family (HC_nN, where n = 3, 5, 7, ...), is of particular interest in astrochemistry being ubiquitous in space (molecular clouds, solar-type protostars, protoplanetary disks, circumstellar envelopes, and external galaxies) and also relatively abundant. It is also abundant in the upper atmosphere of Titan and comets. Since oxygen is the third most abundant element in space, after hydrogen and helium, the reaction O + HCCCN can be of relevance in the chemistry of extraterrestrial environments. Despite that, scarce information exists not only on the reactions of oxygen atoms with cyanoacetylene but with nitriles in general. Here, we report on a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the reactions of cyanoacetylene with both ground ³P and excited ¹D atomic oxygen and provide detailed information on the primary reaction products, their branching fractions (BFs), and the overall reaction mechanisms. More specifically, the reactions of O(³P, ¹D) with HCCCN(X¹Σ⁺) have been investigated under single-collision conditions by the crossed molecular beams scattering method with mass spectrometric detection and time-of-flight analysis at the collision energy, E_c, of 31.1 kJ/mol. From product angular and time-of-flight distributions, we have identified the primary reaction products and determined their branching fractions (BFs). Theoretical calculations of the relevant triplet and singlet potential energy surfaces (PESs) were performed to assist the interpretation of the experimental results and clarify the reaction mechanism. Adiabatic statistical calculations of product BFs for the decomposition of the main triplet and singlet intermediates have also been carried out. Merging together the experimental and theoretical results, we conclude that the O(³P) reaction is characterized by a minor adiabatic channel leading to OCCCN (cyanoketyl) + H (experimental BF = 0.10 ± 0.05), while the dominant channel (BF = 0.90 ± 0.05) occurs via intersystem crossing to the underlying singlet PES and leads to formation of ¹HCCN (cyanomethylene) + CO. The O(¹D) reaction is characterized by the same two channels, with the relative CO/H yield being slightly larger. Considering the recorded reactive signal and the calculated entrance barrier, we estimate that the rate coefficient for reaction O(³P) + HC₃N at 300 K is in the 10^-12 cm³ molec^-1 s^-1 range. Our results are expected to be useful to improve astrochemical and photochemical models. In addition, they are also relevant in combustion chemistry, because the thermal decomposition of pyrrolic and pyridinic structures present in fuel-bound nitrogen generates many nitrogen-bearing compounds, including cyanoacetylene.

Intersystem crossing in the entrance channel of the reaction of O(3P) with pyridine

Two quantum effects can enable reactions to take place at energies below the barrier separating reactants from products: tunnelling and intersystem crossing between coupled potential energy surfaces. Here we show that intersystem crossing in the region between the pre-reactive complex and the reaction barrier can control the rate of bimolecular reactions for weakly coupled potential energy surfaces, even in the absence of heavy atoms. For O(3P) plus pyridine, a reaction relevant to combustion, astrochemistry and biochemistry, crossed-beam experiments indicate that the dominant products are pyrrole and CO, obtained through a spin-forbidden ring-contraction mechanism. The experimental findings are interpreted-by high-level quantum-chemical calculations and statistical non-adiabatic computations of branching fractions-in terms of an efficient intersystem crossing occurring before the high entrance barrier for O-atom addition to the N-atom lone pair. At low to moderate temperatures, the computed reaction rates prove to be dominated by intersystem crossing.

Dynamics of Inelastic and Reactive Collisions of 16O(3P) with 15N18O

The dynamics of O(³P) + NO collisions were investigated at a collision energy of ⟨E_coll⟩ = 84.0 kcal mol^-1 with the use of a crossed molecular beams apparatus employing a rotatable mass spectrometer detector. This experiment was performed with beams of ¹⁶O atoms and isotopically labeled ¹⁵N¹⁸O molecules to enable the products of reactive and inelastic scattering to be distinguished. Three scattering pathways were observed: inelastic scattering (¹⁶O + ¹⁵N¹⁸O), O-atom exchange (¹⁸O + ¹⁵N¹⁶O), and O-atom abstraction (¹⁸O¹⁶O + ¹⁵N). All product channels exhibited a preponderance of forward scattering, but scattering over a broad angular range was also observed for all products. For inelastic scattering, an average of 90% of the collision energy is retained in the translation of ¹⁶O and ¹⁵N¹⁸O. On the other hand, for O-atom exchange (which also leads to O + NO products), the collision energy is partitioned roughly evenly between the translation of ¹⁸O + ¹⁵N¹⁶O and the internal excitation of ¹⁵N¹⁶O. The available energy for O-atom abstraction is significantly lower than the collision energy because of the endoergicity of this reaction, but the available energy is again roughly evenly partitioned between the translation of ¹⁸O¹⁶O + ¹⁵N and the internal excitation of the molecular (O₂) product. The relative yields of the three scattering pathways were determined to be 0.751 for inelastic scattering, 0.220 for O-atom exchange, and 0.029 for O-atom abstraction.

Fermi-phase-induced interference in the reaction between Cl and vibrationally excited CH3D

Mode selectivity is a well-established concept in chemical dynamics. A polyatomic molecule possesses multiple vibrational modes and the mechanical couplings between them can result in complicated anharmonic motions that defy a simple oscillatory description. A prototypical example of this is Fermi-coupled vibration, in which an energy-split eigenstate executes coherent nuclear motion that is comprised of the constituent normal modes with distinctive phases. Will this vibrational phase affect chemical reactivity? How can this phase effect be disentangled from more classical amplitude effects? Here, to address these questions, we study the reaction of Cl with a pair of Fermi states of CH₃D(v₁-I and v₁-II). We find that the reactivity ratio of (v₁-I)/(v₁-II) in forming the CH₂D(v = 0) + HCl(v) products deviates significantly from that permitted by the conventional reactivity-borrowing framework. Based on a proposed metric, this discrepancy can only be explained when the scattering interferences mediated by the CH₃D vibrational phases are explicitly considered, which expands the concept of vibrational control of chemical reactivity into the quantum regime.

Low-temperature reaction dynamics of paramagnetic species in the gas phase

Radicals are abundant in a range of important gas-phase environments. They are prevalent in the atmosphere, in interstellar space, and in combustion processes. As such, understanding how radicals react is essential for the development of accurate models of the complex chemistry occurring in these gas-phase environments. By controlling the properties of the colliding reactants, we can also gain insights into how radical reactions occur on a fundamental level. Recent years have seen remarkable advances in the breadth of experimental methods successfully applied to the study of reaction dynamics involving paramagnetic species-from improvements to the well-known crossed molecular beams approach to newer techniques involving magnetically guided and decelerated beams. Coupled with ever-improving theoretical methods, quantum features are being observed and interesting insights into reaction dynamics are being uncovered in an increasingly diverse range of systems. In this highlight article, we explore some of the exciting recent developments in the study of chemical dynamics involving paramagnetic species. We focus on low-energy reactive collisions involving neutral radical species, where the reaction parameters are controlled. We conclude by identifying some of the limitations of current methods and exploring possible new directions for the field.

Reaction Pathway Control via Reactant Vibrational Excitation and Impact on Product Vibrational Distributions: The O + HO2 → OH + O2 Atmospheric Reaction

Chemical reactions often have multiple pathways, the control of which is of fundamental and practical importance. In this Letter, we examine the dynamics of the O + HO₂ → OH + O₂ reaction, which plays an important role in atmospheric chemistry, using quasi-classical trajectories on a recently developed full-dimensional potential energy surface (PES). This reaction has two pathways leading to the same products: the H abstraction pathway (O_a + HO_bO_c → O_aH + O_bO_c) and the O abstraction pathway (O_a + HO_bO_c → O_bH + O_aO_c). Under thermal conditions, the reaction is dominated by the latter channel, which is barrierless, leading to vibrational excitation of the O₂ product. However, we demonstrate that excitation of the HO₂ reactant in its O-H (v₁) vibrational mode results in dramatic switching of the reaction pathway to the activated H abstraction channel, which leads to a highly excited OH product vibrational state distribution. The implications of such dynamical effects in the atmospheric chemistry are discussed.

Toward a Comprehensive Understanding of Mode-Specific Dynamics of Polyatomic Reactions: A Full-Dimensional Quantum Dynamics Study of the H + NH3 Reaction

Mode specificity not only sheds light on reaction dynamics but also opens the door for chemical reaction control. This work reports a state-of-the-art full-dimensional quantum dynamics study on the prototypical hydrogen abstraction reaction of hydrogen with ammonia, which serves as a benchmark for advancing our fundamental understanding of polyatomic reaction dynamics. By taking advantage of the (3 + 1) Radau-Jacobi coordinates, the bond-specific probabilities are resolved with the reactant NH₃ initiated from either a non-degenerate or degenerate stretching vibrational state. The observed different atom-specific abstraction probabilities from individual states of the degenerate pair are rationalized in the local mode representation according to the different vibrational energy deposited in each N-H bond. It is verified that the three H atoms in NH₃ have the same abstraction probability as that from the degenerate pair and the linear combination of the degenerate pair gives the same reaction probability. In addition, the symmetric and asymmetric stretching modes of the reactant NH₃ have comparable efficacies on driving the reaction.

Conformer Selection by Electrostatic Hexapoles: A Theoretical Study on 1-Chloroethanol and 2-Chloroethanol

The electrostatic hexapole is a versatile device that has been used for many years in gas-phase experiments. Its inhomogeneous electric field has been employed for many purposes such as the selection of rotational states, the selection of clusters, the focusing of molecular beams, and molecular alignment as a precursor for molecular orientation. In the last few years, the hexapolar electric field has been demonstrated to be able to control the conformer composition of molecular beams. The key point is that conformers, where the component of the permanent electric dipole moment with respect to the largest of the principal axes of inertia is close to zero, require more intense hexapolar electric fields to be focused with respect to the other conformers. Here, we simulated the focusing curves of the conformers of 1-chloroethanol and 2-chloroethanol under hypothetical beam conditions, identical for all conformers, in a hypothetical and realistic experimental setup with three different hexapole lengths: 0.5, 1, and 2 m. The objective was to characterize this selection process to set up collision experiments on conformer-selected beams that provide information on the van der Waals clusters formed in collision processes.

Synthesis of methanediol [CH2(OH)2]: The simplest geminal diol

Methanediol [CH₂(OH)₂] represents a pivotal atmospheric volatile organic compound and plays a fundamental role in aerosol growth. Although sought for decades, methanediol has never been identified due to the inherent dehydration tendency of two adjacent hydroxyl groups (OH) at the same carbon atom. Here, we prepare and identify methanediol via processing of low-temperature ices followed by sublimation into the gas phase. These findings open up a concept to synthesize and characterize unstable geminal diols—critical organic transients in Earth’s atmosphere. The excited state dynamics of oxygen may also lead to methanediol in methanol-rich interstellar ices in cold molecular clouds, followed by sublimation in star-forming regions and prospective detection of these reactive intermediates in the gas phase by radiotelescopes.

Geminal diols—organic molecules carrying two hydroxyl groups at the same carbon atom—have been recognized as key reactive intermediates by the physical (organic) chemistry and atmospheric science communities as fundamental transients in the aerosol cycle and in the atmospheric ozonolysis reaction sequence. Anticipating short lifetimes and their tendency to fragment to water plus the aldehyde or ketone, free geminal diols represent one of the most elusive classes of organic reactive intermediates. Here, we afford an exceptional glance into the preparation of the previously elusive methanediol [CH₂(OH)₂] transient—the simplest geminal diol—via energetic processing of low-temperature methanol–oxygen ices. Methanediol was identified in the gas phase upon sublimation via isomer-selective photoionization reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometry combined with isotopic substitution studies. Electronic structure calculations reveal that methanediol is formed via excited state dynamics through insertion of electronically excited atomic oxygen into a carbon–hydrogen bond of the methyl group of methanol followed by stabilization in the icy matrix. The first preparation and detection of methanediol demonstrates its gas-phase stability as supported by a significant barrier hindering unimolecular decomposition to formaldehyde and water. These findings advance our perception of the fundamental chemistry and chemical bonding of geminal diols and signify their role as an efficient sink of aldehydes and ketones in atmospheric environments eventually coupling the atmospheric chemistry of geminal diols and Criegee intermediates.

Reversible 1D chain-reaction gives rise to an atomic-scale Newton's cradle

An F-atom with ∼1 eV translational energy was aimed at a line of fluorocarbon adsorbates on Cu(110). Sequential 'knock-on' of F-atom products was observed by STM to propagate along the 1D fluorocarbon line. Hot F-atoms travelling along the line in six successive 'to-and-fro' cycles paralleled the rocking of a macroscopic Newton's cradle.

A New Pathway for Intersystem Crossing: Unexpected Products in the O(3P) + Cyclopentene Reaction

We investigated the reaction of O(³P) with cyclopentene at 4 Torr and 298 K using time-resolved multiplexed photoionization mass spectrometry, where O(³P) radicals were generated by 351 nm photolysis of NO₂ and reacted with excess cyclopentene in He under pseudo-first-order conditions. The resulting products were sampled, ionized, and detected by tunable synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet radiation and an orthogonal acceleration time-of-flight mass spectrometer. This technique enabled measurement of both mass spectra and photoionization spectra as functions of time following the initiation of the reaction. We observe propylketene (41%), acrolein + ethene (37%), 1-butene + CO (19%), and cyclopentene oxide (3%), of which the propylketene pathway was previously unidentified experimentally and theoretically. The automatically explored reactive potential energy landscape at the CCSD(T)-F12a/cc-pVTZ//ωB97X-D/6-311++G(d,p) level and the related master equation calculations predict that cyclopentene oxide is formed on the singlet potential energy surface, whereas propylketene is first formed on the triplet surface. These calculations provide evidence that significant intersystem crossing can happen in this reaction not only around the geometry of the initial triplet adduct but also around that of triplet propylketene. The formation of 1-butene + CO is initiated on the triplet surface, with bond cleavage and hydrogen transfer occurring during intersystem crossing to the singlet surface. At present, we are unable to explain the mechanistic origins of the acrolein + ethene channel, and we thus refrain from assigning singlet or triplet reactivity to this channel. Overall, at least 60% of the products result from triplet reactivity. We propose that the reactivity of cyclic alkenes with O(³P) is influenced by their greater effective degree of unsaturation compared with acyclic alkenes. This work also suggests that searches for minimum-energy crossing points that connect triplet surfaces to singlet surfaces should extend beyond the initial adducts.

Atomistic dynamics of elimination and nucleophilic substitution disentangled for the F- + CH3CH2Cl reaction

Chemical reaction dynamics are studied to monitor and understand the concerted motion of several atoms while they rearrange from reactants to products. When the number of atoms involved increases, the number of pathways, transition states and product channels also increases and rapidly presents a challenge to experiment and theory. Here we disentangle the dynamics of the competition between bimolecular nucleophilic substitution (S_N2) and base-induced elimination (E2) in the polyatomic reaction F^- + CH₃CH₂Cl. We find quantitative agreement for the energy- and angle-differential reactive scattering cross-sections between ion-imaging experiments and quasi-classical trajectory simulations on a 21-dimensional potential energy hypersurface. The anti-E2 pathway is most important, but the S_N2 pathway becomes more relevant as the collision energy is increased. In both cases the reaction is dominated by direct dynamics. Our study presents atomic-level dynamics of a major benchmark reaction in physical organic chemistry, thereby pushing the number of atoms for detailed reaction dynamics studies to a size that allows applications in many areas of complex chemical networks and environments.

Crossed-Beam and Theoretical Studies of the O(3P, 1D) + Benzene Reactions: Primary Products, Branching Fractions, and Role of Intersystem Crossing

Reliable modeling of hydrocarbon oxidation relies critically on knowledge of the branching fractions (BFs) as a function of temperature (T) and pressure (p) for the products of the reaction of the hydrocarbon with atomic oxygen in its ground state, O(³P). During the past decade, we have performed in-depth investigations of the reactions of O(³P) with a variety of small unsaturated hydrocarbons using the crossed molecular beam (CMB) technique with universal mass spectrometric (MS) detection and time-of-flight (TOF) analysis, combined with synergistic theoretical calculations of the relevant potential energy surfaces (PESs) and statistical computations of product BFs, including intersystem crossing (ISC). This has allowed us to determine the primary products, their BFs, and extent of ISC to ultimately provide theoretical channel-specific rate constants as a function of T and p. In this work, we have extended this approach to the oxidation of one of the most important species involved in the combustion of aromatics: the benzene (C₆H₆) molecule. Despite extensive experimental and theoretical studies on the kinetics and dynamics of the O(³P) + C₆H₆ reaction, the relative importance of the C₆H₅O (phenoxy) + H open-shell products and of the spin-forbidden C₅H₆ (cyclopentadiene) + CO and phenol adduct closed-shell products are still open issues, which have hampered the development of reliable benzene combustion models. With the CMB technique, we have investigated the reaction dynamics of O(³P) + benzene at a collision energy (E_c) of 8.2 kcal/mol, focusing on the occurrence of the phenoxy + H and spin-forbidden C₅H₆ + CO and phenol channels in order to shed further light on the dynamics of this complex and important reaction, including the role of ISC. Concurrently, we have also investigated the reaction dynamics of O(¹D) + benzene at the same E_c. Synergistic high-level electronic structure calculations of the underlying triplet/singlet PESs, including nonadiabatic couplings, have been performed to complement and assist the interpretation of the experimental results. Statistical (RRKM)/master equation (ME) computations of the product distribution and BFs on these PESs, with inclusion of ISC, have been performed and compared to experiment. In light of the reasonable agreement between the CMB experiment, literature kinetic experimental results, and theoretical predictions for the O(³P) + benzene reaction, the so-validated computational methodology has been used to predict (i) the BF between the C₆H₅O + H and C₅H₆ + CO channels as a function of collision energy and temperature (at 0.1 and 1 bar), showing that their increase progressively favors radical (phenoxy + H)-forming over molecule (C₅H₆ + CO and phenol stabilization)-forming channels, and (ii) channel-specific rate constants as a function of T and p, which are expected to be useful for improved combustion models.

Direct Observation of Knock-on in Surface Reactions at Zero Impact Parameter

Reaction dynamics examines molecular motions in reactive collisions. The aiming of reagents at one another has been achieved at selected miss distances (impact parameters, b) by using the corrugations on crystalline surfaces as collimator. Prior experimental work and ab initio calculation showed single atoms aimed at chemisorbed molecules with b = 0 gave knock-on of atomic reaction products through a linear transition state. Here we report a study of b = 0 collision between directed CF₂ and stationary chemisorbed CF₃. Experiments and ab initio calculations again show linear reaction with a linear transition state, despite the additional degrees of freedom for CF₂. The directed motion of CF₂ is conserved through this linear transition state. Conservation of directionality is evidenced experimentally by the observation of a knock-on chain reaction along a line of chemisorbed CF₃.

Pair-Correlated Imaging of Cl + CH3D(v4, v1-I, v1-II = 1, |jK⟩) → CH2D(vi) + HCl(v)

The title reactions were studied at a collisional energy of 10.0 kcal mol^-1 in a crossed-beam, product-imaging experiment. In terms of integral cross sections, all three CH₃-stretching excited CH₃D(v_CH3 = 1) reagents promote the reactivity in forming the predominant product pair of (v_CH2D, v_HCl)_s = (0₀, 0/1)_s with a prominent mode-propensity of v₄ > v₁-I > v₁-II, where v₄ denotes the degenerate mode of CH₃ asymmetric stretch and v₁-I and v₁-II are a pair of Fermi-coupled, symmetric-stretch states. The vibrationally excited CH₂D product pairs of (6₁, 0)_s, (1₁, 0)_s, and (3₁, 0)_s appear to be minor channels and display a reverse propensity of v₄ < v₁-I ≈ v₁-II for (6₁, 0)_s, while v₄ > v₁-I for (1₁, 0)_s. Based on the observed angular distributions, we conjecture that, irrespective of the initial mode of excitation, the (0₀, 0)_s product pair proceeds by a direct abstraction of the peripheral type, whereas the (0₀,1)_s pair is mediated via a resonance pathway. Intriguingly, the angular distributions of the excited product pairs-(6₁, 0)_s, (1₁, 0)_s, and (3₁, 0)_s-are remarkably similar and comprise the traits of both the peripheral mechanism and resonance pathway. Possible interpretation and implication are suggested. In addition, due to the spectral overlap of the REMPI bands and heavily congested image features, a robust data analysis method is developed, which enables us to extract the dynamics attributes of a weak feature buried in the proximate, more intense ones with high fidelity.

Direct observation of knock-on reaction with umbrella inversion arising from zero-impact-parameter collision at a surface

In Surface-Aligned-Reactions (SAR), the degrees of freedom of chemical reactions are restricted and therefore the reaction outcome is selected. Using the inherent corrugation of a Cu(110) substrate the adsorbate molecules can be positioned and aligned and the impact parameter, the collision miss-distance, can be chosen. Here, substitution reaction for a zero impact parameter collision gives an outcome which resembles the classic Newton's cradle in which an incident mass 'knocks-on' the same mass in the collision partner, here F + CF₃ → (CF₃)' + (F)' at a copper surface. The mechanism of knock-on was shown by Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy to involve reversal of the CF₃ umbrella as in Walden inversion, with ejection of (F)' product along the continuation of the F-reagent direction of motion, in collinear reaction.

Artificial Neural Networks for Noise Removal in Data-Sparse Charged Particle Imaging Experiments

We present the first demonstration of artificial neural networks (ANNs) for the removal of Poissonian noise in charged particle imaging measurements with very low overall counts. The approach is successfully applied to both simulated and real experimental image data relating to the detection of photoions/photoelectrons in unimolecular photochemical dynamics studies. Specific examples consider the multiphoton ionization of pyrrole and (S)-camphor. Our results reveal an extremely high level of performance, with the ANNs transforming images that are unusable for any form of quantitative analysis into statistically reliable data with an impressive similarity to benchmark references. Given the widespread use of charged particle imaging methods within the chemical dynamics community, we anticipate that the use of ANNs has significant potential impact - particularly, for example, when working in the limit of very low absorption/photoionization cross-sections, or when attempting to reliably extract subtle image features originating from phenomena such as photofragment vector correlations or photoelectron circular dichroism.

Mode- and Bond-Selected Reaction of H with Local Mode Molecule HDS

Understanding mode- and bond-selected dynamics of elementary chemical reactions is of central importance in molecular reaction dynamics. The initial state-selected time-dependent wave packet method is employed to study the mode and bond selectivity, isotopic branching ratio, and temperature dependence of rate constants of the two-channel reaction of H with local mode molecule HDS. For the abstraction channel, fundamental excitation of the HS (DS) bond of the reactant HDS significantly enhances the H-abstraction (D-abstraction) reaction, whose efficacy is higher than the same amount of translational energy except at low energies just above the energy threshold. This is in sharp contrast to the prediction of Polanyi rules: translational energy is more efficient than vibrational energy in enhancing a reaction with an early barrier. The recent sudden vector projection model is then applied to rationalize the observed mode specificity, which, however, shows that the translational mode vector has a larger coupling with the reaction coordinate than the stretching vector of the active bond, implying a reversed relative efficacy on promoting the reaction as well. In contrast, the mode and bond specificity for the exchange channel is not as strong as for the abstraction channel due to the regulation of the shallow well along the reaction path.

Theoretical Study of the Extent of Intersystem Crossing in the O(3P) + C6H6 Reaction with Experimental Validation

The extent of intersystem crossing in the O(³P) + C₆H₆ reaction, a prototypical system for spin-forbidden reactions in oxygenated aromatic molecules, is theoretically evaluated for the first time. Calculations are performed using nonadiabatic transition-state theory coupled with stochastic master equation simulations and Landau-Zener theory. It is found that the dominant intersystem crossing pathways connect the T2 and S0 potential energy surfaces through at least two distinct minimum-energy crossing points. The calculated channel-specific rate constants and intersystem crossing branching fractions differ from previous literature estimates and provide valuable kinetic data for the investigation of benzene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons oxidation in interstellar, atmospheric, and combustion conditions. The theoretical results are supported by crossed molecular beam experiments with electron ionization mass-spectrometric detection and time-of-flight analysis at 8.2 kcal/mol collision energy. This system is a suitable benchmark for theoretical and experimental studies of intersystem crossing in aromatic species.

Advances and New Challenges to Bimolecular Reaction Dynamics Theory

Dynamics of bimolecular reactions in the gas phase are of foundational importance in combustion, atmospheric chemistry, interstellar chemistry, and plasma chemistry. These collision-induced chemical transformations are a sensitive probe of the underlying potential energy surface(s). Despite tremendous progress in past decades, our understanding is still not complete. In this Perspective, we survey the recent advances in theoretical characterization of bimolecular reaction dynamics, stimulated by new experimental observations, and identify key new challenges.

Hyperfine Magnetic Substate Resolved State-to-State Chemistry

We extend state-to-state chemistry to a realm where besides vibrational, rotational, and hyperfine quantum states magnetic quantum numbers are also resolved. For this, we make use of the Zeeman effect, which energetically splits levels of different magnetic quantum numbers. The chemical reaction which we choose to study is three-body recombination in an ultracold quantum gas of ^{87}Rb atoms forming weakly bound Rb_{2} molecules. Here, we find the propensity rule that the total m_{F} quantum number of the two atoms forming the molecule is conserved. Our method can be employed for many other reactions and inelastic collisions and will allow for novel insights into few-body processes.

When Classical Trajectories Get to Quantum Accuracy: The Scattering of H2 on Pd(111)

When elementary reactive processes occur at such low energies that only a few states of reactants and/or products are available, quantum effects strongly manifest and the standard description of the dynamics within the classical framework fails. We show here, for H₂ scattering on Pd(111), that by pseudoquantizing in the spirit of Bohr the relevant final actions of the system, along with adequately treating the diffraction-mediated trapping of the incoming wave, classical simulations achieve an unprecedented agreement with state-of-the-art quantum dynamics calculations.

Molecular mass growth through ring expansion in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons via radical-radical reactions

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) represent key molecular building blocks leading to carbonaceous nanoparticles identified in combustion systems and extraterrestrial environments. However, the understanding of their formation and growth in these high temperature environments has remained elusive. We present a mechanism through laboratory experiments and computations revealing how the prototype PAH—naphthalene—can be efficiently formed via a rapid 1-indenyl radical—methyl radical reaction. This versatile route converts five- to six-membered rings and provides a detailed view of high temperature mass growth processes that can eventually lead to graphene-type PAHs and two-dimensional nanostructures providing a radical new view about the transformations of carbon in our universe.

Theoretical Study of Barrierless Chemical Reactions Involving Nearly Elastic Rebound: The Case of S(1D) + X2, X = H, D

For some values of the total angular momentum consistent with reaction, the title processes involve nonreactive trajectories proceeding through a single rebound mechanism during which the internal motion of the reagent diatom is nearly unperturbed. When such paths are in a significant amount, the classical reaction probability is found to be markedly lower than the quantum mechanical one. This finding was recently attributed to an unusual quantum effect called diffraction-mediated trapping, and a semiclassical correction was proposed in order to take into account this effect in the classical trajectory method. In the present work, we apply the resulting approach to the calculation of opacity functions as well as total and state-resolved integral cross sections (ICSs) and compare the values obtained with exact quantum ones, most of which are new. As the title reactions proceed through a deep insertion well, mean potential statistical calculations are also presented. Seven values of the collision energy, ranging from 30 to 1127 K, are considered. Two remarkable facts stand out: (i) The corrected classical treatment strongly improves the accuracy of the opacity function as compared to the usual classical treatment. When the entrance transition state is tight, however, those trajectories crossing it with a bending vibrational energy below the zero point energy must be discarded. (ii) The quantum opacity function, particularly its cutoff, is finely reproduced by the statistical approach. Consequently, the total ICS is also very well described by the two previous approximate methods. These, however, do not predict state-resolved ICSs with the same accuracy, proving thereby that (i) one or several genuine quantum effects involved in the dynamics are missed by the corrected classical treatment and (ii) the dynamics are not fully statistical.

Direct observation of product-pair correlations in rotationally inelastic collisions of ND3 with D2

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of state-to-state inelastic scattering of ND₃(j = 1₁^-) with D₂ (j = 0, 1, 2, 3) molecules at collision energies around 800 cm^-1. Using a crossed molecular beam apparatus which employs the combination of Stark deceleration and velocity map imaging, we observe the correlated rotational excitations of both collision partners. For D₂, both elastic (Δj_D2 = 0), inelastic excitation (j = 0 →j = 2) and inelastic de-excitation (j = 2 →j = 0) processes are observed. For a number of final ND₃ states, inelastic channels in which D₂ is rotationally excited or de-excited appear surprisingly strong. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with the predictions from quantum scattering calculations which are based on an ab initio ND₃-D₂ potential energy surface.

Stereodynamical control of product branching in multi-channel barrierless hydrogen abstraction of CH3OH by F

Comprehensive dynamical simulations of a prototypical multi-channel reaction on a globally accurate potential energy surface show that the non-statistical product branching is dictated by unique stereodynamics in the entrance channels.

Hydrogen abstraction from methanol (CH₃OH) by F atoms presents an ideal proving ground to investigate dynamics of multi-channel reactions, because two types of hydrogen can be abstracted from the methanol molecule leading to the HF + CH₃O and HF + CH₂OH products. Using the quasi-classical trajectory approach on a globally accurate potential energy surface based on high-level ab initio calculations, this work reports a comprehensive dynamical investigation of this multi-channel reaction, yielding measurable attributes including integral and differential cross sections, as well as branching ratios. It is shown that while complex-forming and direct mechanisms coexist at low collision energies, these barrierless reaction channels are dominated at high energies by the direct mechanism, in which the reaction is only possible for trajectories entering into the respective dynamical cones of acceptance. Perhaps more importantly, the non-statistical product branching is found to be dictated by unique stereodynamics in the entrance channels.

Imaging pair-correlated reaction cross sections in F + CH3D(νb = 0, 1) → CH2D(ν4 = 1) + HF(ν)

The title reactions were studied in a crossed-beam experiment at collisional energies (Ec) from 0.5 to 4.7 kcal mol-1. The νb (ν4) vibrational mode denotes the bending (umbrella) motion of the CH3D reactant (CH2D product). Using a time-sliced, velocity-map imaging technique, we extracted the state-specific, pair-correlated integral and differential cross sections. As with other isotopically analogous ground-state reactions, an inverted vibrational population of the HF coproduct was observed. Both the step-like excitation function near the threshold and the oscillatory forward-backward peakings in the Ec-evolution of the two dominant pair-correlated angular distributions at lower Ec suggest a resonance-mediated, time-delay mechanism. As Ec increases, the angular distribution of the HF(ν = 2) product evolves into a smooth and broad swath in the backward hemisphere, indicative of a direct rebound mechanism. One quantum excitation of the bending modes of CH3D(νb = 1) promotes the reaction rate by two- to three-fold up to Ec = 2.1 kcal mol-1. Broadly speaking, all major findings are qualitatively in line with previous results in the reactions of the F atom with other isotopologues. However, the rainbow feature recently observed in the CH2D(00) + HF(ν = 3) product channel is entirely absent. A possible rationale is put forward, which reinforces the previous reactive rainbow conjecture and calls for future theoretical investigations.
