Ditopic receptors containing urea groups for solvent extraction of Cu(ii) salts

Dual use of colorimetric sensor and selective copper removal from aqueous media with novel p(HEMA-co-TACYC) hydrogels: Cyclen derivative as both monomer and crosslinker

Within the scope of this study, p(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-tetraacrylic cyclen) (p(HEMA-co-TACYC)) hydrogels were synthesized for the first time in the literature using a tetraacrylic cyclen (TACYC) as both functional monomer and crosslinker. The hydrogels designed especially for Cu²⁺ ions showed colorimetric sensor behavior selective for Cu²⁺ ions in all aqueous media (deionized, tap, river and sea water) and in metal ion mixtures. The p(HEMA-co-TACYC) hydrogels forming a stable complex with Cu²⁺ ions simultaneously showed properties of being a good adsorbent material. The hydrogels have reuse capacity as both sensor and adsorbent material. Changing the amount of TACYC in the hydrogel structure changes the maximum adsorption capacity for Cu²⁺ ions. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption constants for Cu²⁺ ion adsorption of the hydrogels, acting as selective adsorbent in all aqueous media and metal ion mixtures, were determined.

Ditopic binuclear copper(II) complexes for DNA cleavage

Herein we present the synthesis of two ligands containing two di(2-picolyl)amine (DPA) units linked by either a 1,1'-(pyridine-2,6-diyl)bis(3-ethylurea) (L1) or a 1,1'-(1,3-phenylene)bis(3-ethylurea) (L2) spacer. The corresponding binuclear Cu^II and Zn^II complexes were prepared and isolated. The X-ray structures of the L1 ligand and the [Cu₂L1Cl₂]²⁺ complex evidence an unusual cis/trans conformation of one of the urea groups stabilized by an intramolecular hydrogen bond with the nitrogen atom of the pyridyl spacer. The Cu^II complexes form rather strong ternary complexes with phosphorylated anions. The [Cu₂L1]⁴⁺ complex presents a rather high affinity for pyrophosphate (logK₁₁ = 8.19 at pH 7, 25 °C), while [Cu₂L2]⁴⁺ stands out because of its strong binding to AMP^2- (logK₁₁ = 9.3 at pH 7, 25 °C). The interaction of the Cu^II complexes with deoxyribonucleic acid from calf thymus (ct-DNA) was monitored using circular dichroism (CD) and luminescence spectroscopies. These studies revealed a quite strong interaction of the complexes with ct-DNA (K_b = (6.4 ± 0.7) × 10³ for [Cu₂L1]⁴⁺ and K_b = (6.3 ± 1.0) × 10³ for [Cu₂L2]⁴⁺). Competition experiments carried out in the presence of methyl green and BAPPA (N¹,N³-Bis(4-amidinophenyl)propane-1,3-diamine) as major and minor groove competitors, respectively, confirm that the interaction of both complexes with DNA takes place through the minor groove, in agreement with docking studies. The [Cu₂L2]⁴⁺ complex is quite efficient in promoting the cleavage of the double-stranded pUC19 plasmid DNA, by favoring the conversion of the supercoiled form to the nicked form following a hydrolytic mechanism.

Phase-transfer extraction for the fast quantification of perchlorate anions in water

Supramolecular approaches for the quantitative anion analysis in water remain scarce due to the lack of receptors that effectively bind anions in this medium. Herein, we present a novel, fast and easy, supramolecular approach for a selective and quantitative analysis of perchlorate anions in water, coupling the UV-Vis spectroscopic method and phase-transfer extraction of anions by a water-insoluble anion receptor.

endo- versus exo-Cyclic coordination in copper complexes with methylthiazolylcarboxylate tacn derivatives

Three tacn (1,4,7-triazacyclononane)-based ligands substituted by methylthiazolylcarboxylate (tha) and/or methylthiazolyl (th) arms have been examined for copper complexation with the aim to study the impact of carboxylate groups on the complexation of Cu(ii), which can present an endo- or exo-cyclic coordination. Two new ligands have been synthesised: H₃no3tha, tacn bearing three methylthiazolylcarboxylate arms, and H₂no1th2tha, tacn with one methylthiazolyl and two methylthiazolylcarboxylate arms, while Hno2th1tha had already been described. Their complexation behaviour with 1 or 1.5 equivalents of metal was studied on the basis of preliminary results showing the tendency of tha arms to form exocyclic polynuclear species. The solid state studies of the Cu(ii) and Zn(ii) complexes were investigated and some of their structures were characterised by X-ray diffraction. The physicochemical properties of the complexes in solution were also investigated by means of potentiometric measurements, UV-vis spectroscopy, EPR and computational studies, NMR characterisation of the corresponding Zn(ii) complexes and redox behaviour by electrochemistry. Mono- and tri-nuclear complexes ML and M₃L₂ were formed and isolated, highlighting the tendency of methylthiazolylcarboxylate arms, when carried by a tacn platform, to form exo-cyclic and polynuclear complexes. However, this exhaustive study evidences that the "out of cage" and "in cage" present different behaviour in terms of stability.

Catalytic Hydrolysis of Phosphate Monoester by Supramolecular Phosphatases Formed from a Monoalkylated Dizinc(II) Complex, Cyclic Diimide Units, and Copper(II) in Two-Phase Solvent System

Design and synthesis of enzyme mimic with programmed molecular interaction among several building blocks including metal complexes and metal chelators is of intellectual and practical significance. The preparation of artificial enzymes that mimic the natural enzymes such as hydrolases, phosphatases, etc. remains a great challenge in the field of supramolecular chemistry. Herein we report on the design and synthesis of asymmetric (nonsymmetric) supermolecules by the 2:2:2 self-assembly of an amphiphilic zinc(II)-cyclen complex containing a 2,2'-bipyridyl linker and one long alkyl chain (Zn₂L³), barbital analogues, and Cu²⁺ as model compounds of an enzyme alkaline phosphatase that catalyzes the hydrolysis of phosphate monoesters such as mono(4-nitrophenyl)phosphate at neutral pH in two-phase solvent system (H₂O/CHCl₃) in pH 7.4 and 37 °C. Hydrolytic activity of these complexes was found to be catalytic, and their catalytic turnover numbers are 3-4. The mechanistic studies based on the UV/vis and emission spectra of the H₂O and CHCl₃ phases of the reaction mixtures suggest that the hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity balance of the supramolecular catalysts is an important factor for catalytic activity.

Phosphate and polyphosphate anion recognition by a dinuclear copper(ii) complex of an unsymmetrical squaramide

At pH = 7.4, ATP⁴⁻ is selectively removed from water containing PhPO₄²⁻, Haep⁻, AMP²⁻ and ADP³⁻ by the studied squaramide-based dicopper(ii) complex.

[9]aneN3-based fluorescent receptors for metal ion sensing, featuring urea and amide functional groups

The sensing and recognition properties of three new [9]aneN₃-based chemosensors have been studied both in solution and in the solid state.

Recognition of AMP, ADP and ATP through Cooperative Binding by Cu(II) and Zn(II) Complexes Containing Urea and/or Phenylboronic-Acid Moieties

We report a series of Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes with different ligands containing a dipicolyl unit functionalized with urea groups that may contain or not a phenylboronic acid function. These complexes were designed for the recognition of phosphorylated anions through coordination to the metal ion reinforced by hydrogen bonds involving the anion and NH groups of urea. The complexes were isolated and several adducts with pyrophosphate were characterized using X-ray diffraction measurements. Coordination of one of the urea nitrogen atoms to the metal ion promoted the hydrolysis of the ligands containing 1,3-diphenylurea units, while ligands bearing 1-ethyl-3-phenylurea groups did not hydrolyze significantly at room temperature. Spectrophotometric titrations, combined with ¹H and ³¹P NMR studies, were used in investigating the binding of phosphate, pyrophosphate (PPi), and nucleoside 5′-polyphosphates (AMP, ADP, ATP, CMP, and UMP). The association constants determined in aqueous solution (pH 7.0, 0.1 M MOPS) point to a stronger association with PPi, ADP, and ATP as compared with the anions containing a single phosphate unit. The [CuL⁴]²⁺ complex shows important selectivity for pyrophosphate (PPi) over ADP and ATP.
