Rotaxane synthesis exploiting the M(i)/M(iii) redox couple

Iridium Complexes with BIAN-Type Ligands: Synthesis, Structure and Redox Chemistry

A series of iridium complexes with bis(diisopropylphenyl)iminoacenaphtene (dpp-bian) ligands, [Ir(cod)(dpp-bian)Cl] (1), [Ir(cod)(NO)(dpp-bian)](BF₄)₂ (2) and [Ir(cod)(dpp-bian)](BF₄) (3), were prepared and characterized by spectroscopic techniques, elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The structures of 1-3 feature a square planar backbone consisting of two C = C π-bonds of 1,5-cyclooctadiene (cod) and two nitrogen atoms of dpp-bian supplemented with a chloride ion (for 1) or a NO group (for 2) to complete a square-pyramidal geometry. In the nitrosyl complex 2, the Ir-N-O group has a bent geometry (the angle is 125°). The CV data for 1 and 3 show two reversible waves between 0 and -1.6 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). Reversible oxidation was also found at E_1/2 = 0.60 V for 1. Magnetochemical measurements for 2 in a range from 1.77 to 300 K revealed an increase in the magnetic moment with increasing temperature up to 1.2 μ_B (at 300 K). Nitrosyl complex 2 is unstable in solution and loses its NO group to yield [Ir(cod)(dpp-bian)](BF₄) (3). A paramagnetic complex, [Ir(cod)(dpp-bian)](BF₄)₂ (4), was also detected in the solution of 2 as a result of its decomposition. The EPR spectrum of 4 in CH₂Cl₂ is described by the spin Hamiltonian Ĥ = gβHŜ with S = 1/2 and g_xx = g_yy = 2.393 and g_zz = 1.88, which are characteristic of the low-spin 5d⁷-Ir(II) state. DFT calculations were carried out in order to rationalize the experimental results.

Structures, Thermal Properties, and Reactivities of Cationic Rh-cod Complexes in Solid State (cod = 1,5-Cyclooctadiene)

Cationic rhodium complexes with 1,5-cyclooctadiene (cod) ligands are important organometallic compounds that are useful as precatalysts; however, their solid-state structures and thermal properties have not been adequately investigated. In this study, we synthesized [Rh(cod)L]X (L = cod, C6H6, PhMe; X = SbF6, (FSO2)2N (= FSA), CF3BF3, CB11H12) and investigated their phase behaviors, crystal structures, and reactivities. The phase transitions of these salts result in disordered solid-state structures. Moreover, the structural disorder increases with a decrease in the cation symmetry in the SbF6 salts; [Rh(cod)(PhMe)]SbF6 exhibits a rotator phase, and the cations in other salts exhibit a dynamic rotational disorder. In contrast, a lower crystal symmetry with less cation disorder is observed for FSA salts. The thermal stabilities and reactivities of these salts were further investigated. FSA salts with arene ligands produce anion-coordinated complexes upon melting, and SbF6 salts with arene ligands produce [Rh(cod)L'2]SbF6 (L' = MeCN and SMe2) via an in situ single-crystal-to-single-crystal ligand-exchange reaction.

Syntheses and structure of dinuclear metal complexes containing naphthyl-Ir bichromophore

A series of novel metal complexes were synthesized containing an Ir-cyclometalated bichromophore as a visible-light sensitizer. A new bichromophoric unit containing a naphthyl substituent and methyl substituents on the 2-phenylpyridine chelating ligand was synthesized and characterized for the first time. According to the increased crystallinity of the bichromophoric unit, novel Ir-M metal complexes (M = Pd, Mn, and Ir) were synthesized and fully characterized. The novel Ir-Pd complex maintained photocatalytic activity toward styrenes under visible-light irradiation, and polymerization with p-chlorostyrene, copolymerization with styrene and p-chlorostyrene furnished corresponding polymers.

Solution, Solid-State, and Computational Analysis of Agostic Interactions in a Coherent Set of Low-Coordinate Rhodium(III) and Iridium(III) Complexes

A homologous family of low-coordinate complexes of the formulation trans-[M(2,2'-biphenyl)(PR3 )2 ][BArF4 ] (M=Rh, Ir; R=Ph, Cy, iPr, iBu) has been prepared and extensively structurally characterised. Enabled through a comprehensive set of solution phase (VT 1 H and 31 P NMR spectroscopy) and solid-state (single crystal X-ray diffraction) data, and analysis in silico (DFT-based NBO and QTAIM analysis), the structural features of the constituent agostic interactions have been systematically interrogated. The combined data substantiates the adoption of stronger agostic interactions for the IrIII compared to RhIII complexes and, with respect to the phosphine ligands, in the order PiBu3 >PCy3 >PiPr3 >PPh3 . In addition to these structure-property relationships, the effect of crystal packing on the agostic interactions was investigated in the tricyclohexylphosphine complexes. Compression of the associated cations, through inclusion of a more bulky solvent molecule (1,2-difluorobenzene vs. CH2 Cl2 ) in the lattice or collection of data at very low temperature (25 vs. 150 K), lead to small but statistically significant shortening of the M-H-C distances.
