Emerging iron-based mesoporous materials for adsorptive removal of pollutants: Mechanism, optimization, challenges, and future perspective

Iron-based materials (IBMs) have shown promise as adsorbents due to their unique physicochemical properties. This review provides an overview of the different types of IBMs, their synthesis methods, and their properties. Results found in the adsorption of emerging contaminants to a wide range of IBMs are discussed. The IBMs used were evaluated in terms of their maximum uptake capacity, with special consideration given to environmental conditions such as contact time, solution pH, initial pollutant concentration, etc. The adsorption mechanisms of pollutants are discussed taking into account the results of kinetic, isotherm, thermodynamic studies, surface complexation modelling (SCM), and available spectroscopic data. A current overview of molecular modeling and simulation studies related to density functional theory (DFT), surface response methodology (RSM), and artificial neural network (ANN) is presented. In addition, the reusability and suitability of IBMs in real wastewater treatment is shown. The review concludes with the strengths and weaknesses of current research and suggests ideas for future research that will improve our ability to remove contaminants from real wastewater streams.

Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin-polyurethane/graphene oxide magnetic nanoconjugates as effective adsorbent for chromium and lead ions

In this work, hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin-polyurethane magnetic nanoconjugates/reduced graphene oxide (HPMNPU/GO) supramolecules were prepared. The adsorbent was characterized using FTIR and SEM. The adsorbent was evaluated for its efficiency to remove Cr⁶⁺ and Pb²⁺ from aqueous solutions through batch adsorption studies following a Definitive Screening Design (DSD). Effects of solution pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial metal concentration, ionic strength, GO/NC ratio and temperature on Cr ⁶⁺ and Pb ²⁺ adsorption were investigated. Optimization of the adsorption process was done using a desirability function of the Design Expert V11 software. A good agreement between experimental and predicted data proved the efficiency of this model for prediction of real optimum point. The batch experiments implied that the pseudo-second-order model (lowest sum of square error (SSE) values and correlation coefficients (R²) > 0.999) was better to describe the adsorption kinetics of Cr⁶⁺ and Pb²⁺ onto the HPMNPU/GO.

Highly sensitive determination of cancer toxic mercury ions in biological and human sustenance samples based on green and robust synthesized stannic oxide nanoparticles decorated reduced graphene oxide sheets

This work proposes the conventional sonochemical synthesis of nanoparticles of tin (IV) oxide on reduced graphene oxide (rGOS@SnO₂) influencing the formation of a composite with enhanced properties. The combination of SnO₂ nanoparticles with rGOS weakens the accumulation in layered structures of the latter system, which leads to better exposure of SnO₂ active sites and thus increases the conductivity of rGOS@SnO₂ composite. This validates the improved electro-catalytic activity of the composite based on previous reports for its successful utilization in the electrochemical determination of toxic contaminants. The quantitative determination of mercury ions, through the use of the electrochemical sensor based on rGOS@SnO₂ manifests several advantages such as simple operator, promptness, cost effectiveness and time independency when compared to other traditional techniques. The fabricated sensor displays two wide linear responses in the range of 0.25-705.3 μM for mercury ions, with a rapid response time about 1 s, and with a high sensitivity of 10.18 μA μM^-1 cm^-2 under optimized conditions. The accumulation of traces of mercury in the bodies of fish in the marine eco system marks the significance of its detection in real samples. The satisfactory results of the proposed sensor establish the supreme efficacy of layered nanomaterials in conjunction with nanoparticles for the simple, rapid and efficient detection of pollutants in food and biological samples.

Kinetics and Adsorption Studies of Mercury and Lead by Ceria Nanoparticles Entrapped in Tamarind Powder

In this study, novel adsorbent ceria nanoparticles (CeNPs) entrapped in tamarind powder (Tm@CeNPs) were efficiently utilized for the simultaneous adsorption of aqueous mercury [Hg(II)] and aqueous lead [Pb(II)]. Surface interactions between the adsorbent and heavy metal ions play an important role in the adsorption process, and the surface morphology can significantly improve the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent. The Langmuir adsorption capacity of Tm@CeNPs for Hg(II) and Pb(II) was found to be 200 and 142.85 mg/g, respectively. The surface area of utilized adsorbent was found to be very high, that is, 412 m2/g. The adsorption kinetics of Tm@CeNPs for both ions follow pseudo-second-order, and the adsorption process is also thermodynamically feasible. Column study favors multilayer adsorption of the heavy metal ion. The spectral analysis of the adsorbent revealed that hydroxyl, carboxylic, and ester groups, as well as CeNPs, are responsible for Hg(II) and Pb(II) adsorption. The cost-benefit analysis confirms the economic viability of the synthesized Tm@CeNPs composite for heavy metal removal. The adsorbent is best suited for Hg(II) adsorption as compared to Pb(II). This is a novel study on the utilization of tamarind leaf powder with CeNPs for heavy metal ion adsorption and its adsorption mechanism, which has not been reported to date.
