Pathway and Length Control of Supramolecular Polymers in Aqueous Media via a Hydrogen Bonding Lock

Programming the organization of π-conjugated systems into nanostructures of defined dimensions is a requirement for the preparation of functional materials. Herein, we have achieved high-precision control over the self-assembly pathways and fiber length of an amphiphilic BODIPY dye in aqueous media by exploiting a programmable hydrogen bonding lock. The presence of a (2-hydroxyethyl)amide group in the target BODIPY enables different types of intra- vs. intermolecular hydrogen bonding, leading to a competition between kinetically controlled discoidal H-type aggregates and thermodynamically controlled 1D J-type fibers in water. The high stability of the kinetic state, which is dominated by the hydrophobic effect, is reflected in the slow transformation to the thermodynamic product (several weeks at room temperature). However, this lag time can be suppressed by the addition of seeds from the thermodynamic species, enabling us to obtain supramolecular polymers of tuneable length in water for multiple cycles.

Tuning Achiral to Chiral Supramolecular Helical Superstructures

The design and synthesis of achiral organic functional molecules which can assemble into a chiral with selective handedness in the absence of chiral substances is an important in understanding the role chirality plays within these systems. In this review, we described general approaches towards supramolecular chiral molecules the synthesis and self-assembly of achiral molecule to active chiral molecules to investigate controlled supramolecular chiral nanostructures with their photoluminescent properties for rapid, sensitive and selective detection of analytes of choice. Various small molecules have been discussed for achiral to chiral along with induction of chirality and controlled chiral helical structures in detail. We discussed few examples where stimuli used to control the chirality such as temperature, pH etc. Finally, we will also explore on the photo responsive helicity properties of the aggregation induced emission active molecule such as tetraphenylethene conjugates.

Supramolecular polymerization provides non-equilibrium product distributions of imine-linked macrocycles

Supramolecular polymerization of imine-linked macrocycles has been coupled to dynamic imine bond exchange within a series of macrocycles and oligomers. In this way, macrocycle synthesis is driven by supramolecular assembly, either into small aggregates supported by π–π interactions, or high-aspect ratio nanotubes stabilized primarily by electrostatic and solvophobic interactions. For the latter, supramolecular polymerization into nanotubes restricts imine exchange, thereby conferring chemical stability to the assemblies and their constituent macrocycles. Competition in the formation and component exchange among macrocycles favored pyridine-2,6-diimine-linked species due to their rapid synthesis, thermodynamic stability, and assembly into high-aspect ratio nanotubes under the reaction conditions. In addition, the pyridine-containing nanotubes inhibit the formation of similar macrocycles containing benzene-1,3-diimine-linkages, presumably by disrupting their assembly and templation. Finally, we exploit rapid imine exchange within weak, low-aspect ratio macrocycle aggregates to carry out monomer exchange reactions to macrocycles bearing pyridine moieties. Once a pyridine-containing dialdehyde has exchanged into a macrocycle, the macrocycle becomes capable of nanotube formation, which dramatically slows further imine exchange. This kinetic trap provides chemically diverse macrocycles that are not attainable by direct synthetic methods. Together these findings provide new insights into coupling supramolecular polymerization and dynamic covalent bond-forming processes and leverages this insight to target asymmetric nanotubes. We envision these findings spurring further research efforts in the synthesis of nanostructures with designed and emergent properties.

Future of Supramolecular Copolymers Unveiled by Reflecting on Covalent Copolymerization

Supramolecular copolymers are an emerging class of materials, and in the last years their potential has been demonstrated on a broad scale. Implementing noncovalent polymers with multiple components can bring together useful features such as dynamicity and new functionalities. However, mastering and tuning the microstructure of these systems is still an open challenge. In this Perspective, we aim to trace the general principles of supramolecular copolymerization by analyzing them through the lens of the well-established field of covalent copolymerization. Our goal is to delineate guidelines to classify and analyze supramolecular copolymers in order to create a fruitful platform to design and investigate new multicomponent systems.

Water-induced formation of a chiral phenylalanine derivative supramolecule

In biological systems, chiral self-assemblies are formed in water. To understand the role of water in the formation of supramolecular chirality, an amino acid derivative, N,N-diphenylalanine-3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylicdiimide (PBI-Phe), was synthesized from perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride and phenylalanine. PBI-Phe self-assembled into a spherical structure in pure DMSO, but into a helical fiber structure in a solution of DMSO mixed with water. Furthermore, increasing the relative amount of water included in the solution led to an increase the supramolecular chirality.

Molecular modelling of supramolecular one dimensional polymers

Supramolecular polymers exemplify the need to employ several computational techniques to study processes and phenomena occuring at varied length and time scales. Electronic processes, conformational and configurational excitations of small aggregates of chromophoric molecules, solvent effects under realistic thermodynamic conditions and mesoscale morphologies are some of the challenges which demand hierarchical modelling approaches. This review focusses on one-dimensional supramolecular polymers, the mechanism of self-assembly of monomers in polar and non-polar solvents and properties they exhibit. Directions for future work are as well outlined.
