Development of nanocellulose hydrogels for application in the food and biomedical industries: A review

As the most abundant and renewable natural resource, cellulose has attracted significant attention and research interest for the production of hydrogels (HGs). To address environmental issues and emerging demands, the benefits of naturally produced HGs include excellent mechanical properties and superior biocompatibility. HGs are three-dimensional networks created by chemical or physical cross-linking of linear or branched hydrophilic polymers and have high capacity for absorption of water and biological fluids. Although widely used in the food and biomedical fields, most HGs are not biodegradable. Nanocellulose hydrogels (NC-HGs) have been extensively applied in the food industry for detection of freshness, chemical additives, and substitutes, as well as the biomedical field for use as bioengineering scaffolds and drug delivery systems owing to structural interchangeability and stimuli-responsive properties. In this review article, the sources, structures, and preparation methods of NC-HGs are described, applications in the food and biomedical industries are summarized, and current limitations and future trends are discussed.

Optimized high-yield synthesis of chitin nanocrystals from shrimp shell chitin by steam explosion

This study attempted for the first time to prepare chitin nanocrystals (ChNCs) from shrimp shell chitin using steam explosion (SE) method. Response surface methodology (RSM) approach was used to optimize the SE conditions. Optimum SE conditions to acquire a maximum yield of 76.78 % were acid concentration (2.63 N), time (23.70 min), and chitin to acid ratio (1:22). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed the ChNCs produced by SE had an irregular spherical shape with an average diameter of 55.70 ± 13.12 nm. FTIR spectra showed ChNCs were slightly different than chitin due to a shift in peak positions to higher wavenumber and higher peak intensities. XRD patterns indicated ChNCs were a typical α-chitin structure. Thermal analysis revealed ChNCs were less thermally stable than chitin. Compared to conventional acid hydrolysis, the SE approach described in this study is simple, fast, easy, and requires less acid concentration and acid quantity, making it more scalable and efficient for synthesizing ChNCs. Furthermore, the characteristics of the ChNCs will shed light on the potential industrial uses for the polymer.

Bioaerogels, the emerging technology for wastewater treatment: A comprehensive review on synthesis, properties and applications

Over the past decade use of aerogels has received much attention as an emerging technology for wastewater treatment. However, production of aerogels is not environment-friendly. Owing to its excellent properties such as porosity, three-dimensional structure, being amenable to chemical modifications, it is imperative to devise strategies for their improved production and use. Bioaerogels are non-toxic and most of their precursor compounds are biomass-derived. This review aims to present a comprehensive report on survey of existing literature published on the use of bioaerogels for removal of all major categories of water contaminants, namely, heavy metals, industrial dyes, oil, organic compounds and pharmaceuticals. It also gives critical analysis of the lacunae in the existing knowledge such as lack of studies on domestic sewage, emerging pollutants, toxicity of raw materials and adequate disposal of used adsorbents. Proposals of overcoming the limitations in the applicability of bioaerogels, like combining constructed wetlands with use of bioaerogels, among others have been discussed. In this review, emphasis has been given on production of bioaerogels, with an aim to underscore the potential of valorization of biomass waste to develop novel materials for wastewater treatment in an effort towards creating a circular and green economy.

Highly efficient microencapsulation of phytonutrients by fractioned cellulose using biopolymer complexation technology

A poorly water soluble polar and non-polar bioactive complexes encapsulated in a nanocellulose-based polymeric network are the focus of this research. Ascorbic acid, resveratrol, holy basil extract, pomegranate extract, and niacin are all microencapsulated bioactive complexes that make up Zetalife^®, a nutritional ingredient. It uses an interpenetrating polymeric network (IPN) with more dispersed nanocellulose and phospholipids to increase Zetalife^® s bioavailability. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopic (FESEM) images were used in studying the morphology of encapsulated bioactive molecules. The average microbead size was determined to be 244.2 nm. After each month of storage, the sample's microbial content was measured to assess stability. In vitro release followed a first-order kinetic model with high R².

Nanochitin: Chemistry, Structure, Assembly, and Applications

Chitin, a fascinating biopolymer found in living organisms, fulfills current demands of availability, sustainability, biocompatibility, biodegradability, functionality, and renewability. A feature of chitin is its ability to structure into hierarchical assemblies, spanning the nano- and macroscales, imparting toughness and resistance (chemical, biological, among others) to multicomponent materials as well as adding adaptability, tunability, and versatility. Retaining the inherent structural characteristics of chitin and its colloidal features in dispersed media has been central to its use, considering it as a building block for the construction of emerging materials. Top-down chitin designs have been reported and differentiate from the traditional molecular-level, bottom-up synthesis and assembly for material development. Such topics are the focus of this Review, which also covers the origins and biological characteristics of chitin and their influence on the morphological and physical-chemical properties. We discuss recent achievements in the isolation, deconstruction, and fractionation of chitin nanostructures of varying axial aspects (nanofibrils and nanorods) along with methods for their modification and assembly into functional materials. We highlight the role of nanochitin in its native architecture and as a component of materials subjected to multiscale interactions, leading to highly dynamic and functional structures. We introduce the most recent advances in the applications of nanochitin-derived materials and industrialization efforts, following green manufacturing principles. Finally, we offer a critical perspective about the adoption of nanochitin in the context of advanced, sustainable materials.

Nanostructured Materials for Water Purification: Adsorption of Heavy Metal Ions and Organic Dyes

Chemical water pollution poses a threat to human beings and ecological systems. The purification of water to remove toxic organic and inorganic pollutants is essential for a safe society and a clean environment. Adsorption-based water treatment is considered one of the most effective and economic technologies designed to remove toxic substances. In this article, we review the recent progress in the field of nanostructured materials used for water purification, particularly those used for the adsorption of heavy metal ions and organic dyes. This review includes a range of nanostructured materials such as metal-based nanoparticles, polymer-based nanomaterials, carbon nanomaterials, bio-mass materials, and other types of nanostructured materials. Finally, the current challenges in the fields of adsorption of toxic materials using nanostructured materials are briefly discussed.

Recent Advances in Functional Materials for Wastewater Treatment: From Materials to Technological Innovations

The growing concerns about climate changes and environmental pollution have galvanized considerable research efforts in recent years to develop effective and innovative remediation technologies for contaminated soils and water caused by industrial and domestic activities. In this context, the establishment of effective treatment methods for wastewater has been critically important and urgent, since water pollution can take place on a very large scale (e.g., oceanic oil spills) and have massive impacts on ecosystems and human lives. Functional materials play a central role in the advancement of these technologies due to their highly tunable properties and functions. This article focuses on reviewing the recent progress in the application of various functional materials for wastewater treatment. Our literature survey is first concentrated on new modification methods and outcomes for a range of functional materials which have been actively investigated in recent years, including biofilm carriers, sand filters, biomass, biopolymers, and functional inorganic materials. Apart from the development of modified functional materials, our literature survey also covers the technological applications of superhydrophilic/superhydrophobic meshes, hybrid membranes, and reusable sponges in oil–water separation. These devices have gained significantly enhanced performance by using new functional materials as the key components (e.g., coating materials), and are therefore highly useful for treatment of oily wastewater, such as contaminated water collected from an oil spill site or oil–water emulsions resulting from industrial pollution. Based on our state-of-the-art literature review, future directions in the development and application of functional materials for wastewater treatment are suggested.

Impact of light on microalgal photosynthetic microbial fuel cells and removal of pollutants by nanoadsorbent biopolymers: Updates, challenges and innovations

Photosynthetic microbial fuel cells (PMFCs) with microalgae have huge potential for treating wastewater while simultaneously converting light energy into electrical energy. The efficiency of such cells directly depends on algal growth, which depends on light intensity. Higher light intensity results in increased potential as well as enhancement in generation of biomass rich in biopolymers. Such biopolymers are produced either by microbes at anode and algae at cathode or vice versa. The biopolymers recovered from these biological sources can be added in wastewater alone or in combination with nanomaterials to act as nanoadsorbents. These nanoadsorbents further increase the efficiency of PMFC by removing the pollutants like metals and dyes. In this review firstly the effect of different light intensities on the growth of microalgae, importance of diatoms in a PMFC and their impact on PMFCs efficiencies have been narrated. Secondly recovery of biopolymers from different biological sources and their role in removal of metals, dyes along with their impact on circular bioeconomy have been discussed. Thereafter bottlenecks and future perspectives in this field of research have been narrated.

Applications of chitin and chitosan based biomaterials for the adsorptive removal of textile dyes from water - A comprehensive review

The presence of pollutants in the water bodies deteriorate the water quality and make it unfit for use. From an environmental perspective, it is essential to develop new technologies for the wastewater treatment and recycling of dye contaminated water. The surface modified chitin and chitosan biopolymeric composites based adsorbents, have an important role in the toxic organic dyes from removal wastewater. The surface modification of biopolymers with various organics and inorganics produces more active sites at the surface of the adsorbent, which enhances dye and adsorbent interaction more reliable. Herein, the work brought in the thought of the application of various chitin and chitosan composites in wastewater remediation and suggested the versatility in composites for the development of rapid, selective and effective removal processes for the detoxification of a variety of organic dyes. It further emphasizes the existing obstruction and impending prediction for the deprivation of dyes via adsorption techniques.

Aerogels as promising materials for antibacterial applications: a mini-review

The increasing cases of bacterial infections originating from resistant bacteria are a serious problem globally and many approaches have been developed for different purposes to treat bacterial infections. Aerogels are a novel class of smart porous materials composed of three-dimensional networks. Recently, aerogels with the advantages of ultra-low density, high porosity, tunable particle and pore sizes, and biocompatibility have been regarded as promising carriers for the design of delivery systems. Recently, aerogels have also been provided with antibacterial activity through loading of antibacterial agents, incorporation of metal/metal oxides and via surface functionalization and coating with various functional groups. In this mini-review, the synthesis of aerogels from both conventional and low-cost precursors is reported and examples of aerogels displaying antibacterial properties are summarized. As a result, it is clear that the encouraging antibacterial performance of aerogels promotes their use in many antibacterial applications, especially in the food industry, pharmaceutics and medicine.

Surface and Interface Engineering for Nanocellulosic Advanced Materials

How do trees support their upright massive bodies? The support comes from the incredibly strong and stiff, and highly crystalline nanoscale fibrils of extended cellulose chains, called cellulose nanofibers. Cellulose nanofibers and their crystalline parts-cellulose nanocrystals, collectively nanocelluloses, are therefore the recent hot materials to incorporate in man-made sustainable, environmentally sound, and mechanically strong materials. Nanocelluloses are generally obtained through a top-down process, during or after which the original surface chemistry and interface interactions can be dramatically changed. Therefore, surface and interface engineering are extremely important when nanocellulosic materials with a bottom-up process are fabricated. Herein, the main focus is on promising chemical modification and nonmodification approaches, aiming to prospect this hot topic from novel aspects, including nanocellulose-, chemistry-, and process-oriented surface and interface engineering for advanced nanocellulosic materials. The reinforcement of nanocelluloses in some functional materials, such as structural materials, films, filaments, aerogels, and foams, is discussed, relating to tailored surface and/or interface engineering. Although some of the nanocellulosic products have already reached the industrial arena, it is hoped that more and more nanocellulose-based products will become available in everyday life in the next few years.

Sustainable Removal of Contaminants by Biopolymers: A Novel Approach for Wastewater Treatment. Current State and Future Perspectives

Naturally occurring substances or polymeric biomolecules synthesized by living organisms during their entire life cycle are commonly defined as biopolymers. Different classifications of biopolymers have been proposed, focusing on their monomeric units, thus allowing them to be distinguished into three different classes with a huge diversity of secondary structures. Due to their ability to be easily manipulated and modified, their versatility, and their sustainability, biopolymers have been proposed in different fields of interest, starting from food, pharmaceutical, and biomedical industries, (i.e., as excipients, gelling agents, stabilizers, or thickeners). Furthermore, due to their sustainable and renewable features, their biodegradability, and their non-toxicity, biopolymers have also been proposed in wastewater treatment, in combination with different reinforcing materials (natural fibers, inorganic micro- or nano-sized fillers, antioxidants, and pigments) toward the development of novel composites with improved properties. On the other hand, the improper or illegal emission of untreated industrial, agricultural, and household wastewater containing a variety of organic and inorganic pollutants represents a great risk to aquatic systems, with a negative impact due to their high toxicity. Among the remediation techniques, adsorption is widely used and documented for its efficiency, intrinsic simplicity, and low cost. Biopolymers represent promising and challenging adsorbents for aquatic environments’ decontamination from organic and inorganic pollutants, allowing for protection of the environment and living organisms. This review summarizes the results obtained in recent years from the sustainable removal of contaminants by biopolymers, trying to identify open questions and future perspectives to overcome the present gaps and limitations.

Starch, cellulose, pectin, gum, alginate, chitin and chitosan derived (nano)materials for sustainable water treatment: A review

Natural biopolymers, polymeric organic molecules produced by living organisms and/or renewable resources, are considered greener, sustainable, and eco-friendly materials. Natural polysaccharides comprising cellulose, chitin/chitosan, starch, gum, alginate, and pectin are sustainable materials owing to their outstanding structural features, abundant availability, and nontoxicity, ease of modification, biocompatibility, and promissing potentials. Plentiful polysaccharides have been utilized for making assorted (nano)catalysts in recent years; fabrication of polysaccharides-supported metal/metal oxide (nano)materials is one of the effective strategies in nanotechnology. Water is one of the world's foremost environmental stress concerns. Nanomaterial-adorned polysaccharides-based entities have functioned as novel and more efficient (nano)catalysts or sorbents in eliminating an array of aqueous pollutants and contaminants, including ionic metals and organic/inorganic pollutants from wastewater. This review encompasses recent advancements, trends and challenges for natural biopolymers assembled from renewable resources for exploitation in the production of starch, cellulose, pectin, gum, alginate, chitin and chitosan-derived (nano)materials.

Recent progress in the conversion of biomass wastes into functional materials for value-added applications

The amount of biomass wastes is rapidly increasing, which leads to numerous disposal problems and governance issues. Thus, the recycling and reuse of biomass wastes into value-added applications have attracted more and more attention. This paper reviews the research on biomass waste utilization and biomass wastes derived functional materials in last five years. The recent research interests mainly focus on the following three aspects: (1) extraction of natural polymers from biomass wastes, (2) reuse of biomass wastes, and (3) preparation of carbon-based materials as novel adsorbents, catalyst carriers, electrode materials, and functional composites. Various biomass wastes have been collected from agricultural and forestry wastes, animal wastes, industrial wastes and municipal solid wastes as raw materials with low cost; however, future studies are required to evaluate the quality and safety of biomass wastes derived products and develop highly feasible and cost-effective methods for the conversion of biomass wastes to enable the industrial scale production.

Biomass-Derived, Water-Induced Self-Recoverable Composite Aerogels with Robust Superwettability for Water Treatment

Polluted water is a worldwide problem; therefore, effective separation of oil/water and removal of dyes, organic micropollutants, and heavy metals in wastewater are the need of the hour. Herein, hydrophilic β-cyclodextrin-grafted carboxymethyl cellulose, biodegradable polyvinyl alcohol, and chitosan were used as main raw materials to construct a multifunctional aerogel framework by simple sol-gel and directional freeze-drying methods. Featuring intrinsic superamphiphilic wettability in air, robust superoleophobic wettability underwater, and excellent shape-recovery characteristics, the biomass-derived aerogel presents durable oil/water separation even after 10 cycles. The aerogels possess prominent adsorption capacity for methyl blue, 1-naphthylamine, and Cu²⁺, which was as high as 121.55 mg/g, 33.96 mg/g, and 122.6 mg/g, respectively. In addition, various pollutant mixtures could be effectively adsorbed by the aerogel at the same time with the adsorption capacity of 121.75 mg/g for methyl blue, 0.97 mg/g for bisphenol A, and 20.11 mg/g for Cu²⁺.

Upgrading of marine (fish and crustaceans) biowaste for high added-value molecules and bio(nano)-materials

Currently, the Earth is subjected to environmental pressure of unprecedented proportions in the history of mankind. The inexorable growth of the global population and the establishment of large urban areas with increasingly higher expectations regarding the quality of life are issues demanding radically new strategies aimed to change the current model, which is still mostly based on linear economy approaches and fossil resources towards innovative standards, where both energy and daily use products and materials should be of renewable origin and 'made to be made again'. These concepts have inspired the circular economy vision, which redefines growth through the continuous valorisation of waste generated by any production or activity in a virtuous cycle. This not only has a positive impact on the environment, but builds long-term resilience, generating business, new technologies, livelihoods and jobs. In this scenario, among the discards of anthropogenic activities, biodegradable waste represents one of the largest and highly heterogeneous portions, which includes garden and park waste, food processing and kitchen waste from households, restaurants, caterers and retail premises, and food plants, domestic and sewage waste, manure, food waste, and residues from forestry, agriculture and fisheries. Thus, this review specifically aims to survey the processes and technologies for the recovery of fish waste and its sustainable conversion to high added-value molecules and bio(nano)materials.

Enhancement of chitin suspension hydrolysis by a combination of ultrasound and chitinase

This study evaluated the degradation kinetics and structural characteristics of chitin suspension (CS) with a combination of ultrasound and chitinase. Compared with the enzymolysis, the degradation degree of sonoenzymolysis was enhanced to the maximum by 27.93 % at an intensity of 25 W/mL for 20 min. According to degradation kinetics, ultrasound intensified molecular collision rate between chitinase and substrate, thereby increasing the degradation degree. What's more, combined with chitinase, ultrasound intensified the rate of the breakage of glycosidic bond and viscosity-average molecular weight (M_v) decrease, but no obvious change in acetylation degree (DA). Additionally, the intra- or inter-hydrogen bindings were weakened by ultrasound during sonoenzymolysis, leading to a slight decrease in crystalline index and a more ordered structure, which increased the accessibility of the substrate to enzyme. In conclusion, combination of chitinase and ultrasound could enhance the hydrolysis of CS while without changing its primary structure.

Chitin nanowhisker - Inspired electrospun PVDF membrane for enhanced oil-water separation

The requirement of promoting a revolution in filtration technology has led to growing devotion in advanced functional materials such as electrospun membranes for filtering devices as a solution for providing water at lower energy costs. In this study, electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride membranes were fabricated by reinforcing 0.5 and 1 wt. % of chitin nanowhiskers in order to improve their thermal stability, mechanical properties, pure water flux and oil-water filtration performance for the possible application as filtration membranes. Morphological analysis revealed the porous and fibrous structure of membranes which confirmed by BET surface area analysis. Incorporation of chitin nanowhiskers improved the mechanical properties of the membranes such as elongation at break and tensile strength (specifically at 1 wt. % of chitin nanowhisker) while resulted in substantial enhancement of their thermal properties. Furthermore, polyvinylidene fluoride/chitin nanowhisker membranes showed enhanced oil-water separation ability, while reinforcement of chitin nanowhisker led to increase pure water flux rate, which measured as a crucial point in filtration membranes. The oil-water separation results compared with a commercial polyvinylidene fluoride membrane and the results signified the potential of electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride/chitin nanowhisker to be used for filtration application.
