A mini review on bio-electrochemical systems for the treatment of azo dye wastewater: State-of-the-art and future prospects

Azo dyes are typical toxic and refractory organic pollutants widely used in the textile industry. Bio-electrochemical systems (BESs) have great potential for the treatment of azo dyes with the help of microorganisms as biocatalysts and have advanced significantly in recent years. However, the latest and significant advancement and achievements of BESs treating azo dyes have not been reviewed since 8 years ago. This review thus focuses on the recent investigations of BESs treating azo dyes from the year of 2013-2020 in order to broaden the knowledge and deepen the understanding in this field. In this review, azo dyes degradation mechanisms of BESs are first elaborated, followed by the introduction of BES configurations with the emphasis on the novelties. The azo dye degradation performance of BESs is then presented to demonstrate their effectiveness in azo dye removal. Effects of various operating parameters on the overall performance of BESs are comprehensively elucidated, including electrode materials, external resistances and applied potentials, initial concentrations of azo dyes, and co-substrates. Predominant microorganisms responsible for degradation of azo dyes in BESs are highlighted in details. Furthermore, the combination of BESs with other processes to further improve the azo dye removal are discussed. Finally, an outlook on the future research directions and challenges is provided from the viewpoint of realistic applications of the technology.

Enhanced degradation of reactive brilliant red X-3B by photocatalysis integrated with micro-electrolysis

The microwave electrodeless lamp UV photocatalysis (MWUV) integrated with iron carbon micro-electrolysis (ME) was applied to degrade reactive brilliant red X-3B. In the present study, the removal rate of X-3B by MWUV/ME was 95%, which was significantly higher than 56% of MWUV and 62% of ME system. The experiment results demonstrated a synergistic effect in MWUV/ME system, wherein the ME system played an important role in color removal and the formation of ·OH in photocatalysis contributed most for the mineralization of X-3B and its intermediates. The removal efficiency of TOC was 32%, 7.5%, and 59.5% under MWUV, ME, and MWUV/ME processes at the end of the reaction, respectively. The Fe³⁺ existed in the system was an enhancer of producing ·OH via self-generation of ·OH by UV irradiation or improving the separation of electron-hole in photocatalysis by capturing the electrons. Therefore, the combined treatment of MWUV and ME system has the potential of synergistic effect compared to the separate process. Lowering the initial solution pH and increasing the iron filing dosage and dissolved oxygen were beneficial for the enhancement of degradation efficiency. The inorganic anions showed a diversity influencing the degradation of X-3B. NO₃^-, CO₃^2-, and SO₄^2- (at higher concentration) promoted the degradation reaction, while Cl^- had non-significant effect.

Azo dye as part of co-substrate in a biofilm electrode reactor-microbial fuel cell coupled system and an analysis of the relevant microorganisms

In general, refractory organics were hardly used as co-substrate in bioelectrochemical system. This study established a coupled bioelectrochemical system composed of a biofilm electrode reactor and a microbial fuel cell for using the azo dye X-3B as part of co-substrate. The two units degraded the azo dye X-3B stepwise while using it as part of co-substrate. Our results indicated that the removal efficiency of X-3B increased 28.5% using the coupled system compared with a control system. Moreover, the addition of the co-substrate glucose, which was necessary for MFC electricity generation, was reduced on the premise of stable removal efficiency in the coupled system to prevent resource waste due to using X-3B as part of co-substrate. The intermediate products of X-3B degradation were further explored using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and a X-3B degradation pathway was proposed at the same time. Microbial communities were analyzed, illustrating that the mechanism of X-3B degradation was dependent on bioelectrochemistry rather than on microbial degradation.

Azo dye degradation pathway and bacterial community structure in biofilm electrode reactors

In this study, the degradation pathway of the azo dye X-3B was explored in biofilm electrode reactors (BERs). The X-3B and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies were evaluated under different voltages, salinities, and temperatures. The removal efficiencies increased with increasing voltage. Additionally, the BER achieved maximum X-3B removal efficiencies of 66.26% and 75.27% at a NaCl concentration of 0.33 g L^-1 and temperature of 32 °C, respectively; it achieved a COD removal efficiency of 75.64% at a NaCl concentration of 0.330 g L^-1. Fourier transform infrared spectrometry and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis indicated that the X-3B biodegradation process first involved the interruption of the conjugated double-bond, resulting in aniline, benzodiazepine substance, triazine, and naphthalene ring formation. These compounds were further degraded into lower-molecular-weight products. From this, the degradation pathway of the azo dye X-3B was proposed in BERs. The relative abundances of the microbial community at the phylum and genus levels were affected by temperature, the presence of electrons, and an anaerobic environment in the BERs. To achieve better removal efficiencies, further studies on the functions of the microorganisms are needed.

Effects of Electrical Stimulation on the Degradation of Azo Dye in Three-Dimensional Biofilm Electrode Reactors

Three-dimensional biofilm electrode reactors (3D-BERs) were constructed to degrade the azo dye Reactive Brilliant Red (RBR) X-3B. The 3D-BERs with different influent concentrations and external voltages were individually studied to investigate their influence on the removal of X-3B. Experimental results showed that 3D-BERs have good X-3B removal efficiency; even when the influent concentration was 800 mg/L, removal efficiency of 73.4% was still achieved. In addition, the X-3B removal efficiency stabilized shortly after the influent concentration increased. In 3D-BERs, the average X-3B removal efficiency increased from 52.8% to 85.4% when the external voltage rose from 0 to 2 V. We further identified the intermediate products via UV-Vis and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses, and discussed the potential mechanism of degradation. After the conjugate structure of X-3B was destroyed, all of the substances generated mainly consisted of lower-molecular-weight organics.
