Engineering FeOOH/Fe2O3@Carbon Interfaces With Biomass-Derived Carbon Nanodot/Iron Colloids for Efficient Redox-Modulated Dopamine Voltammetric Detection

The Fe2+/Fe3+ redox couple is effective for voltammetric detection of trace dopamine (DA). However, achieving adequate concentrations with high electroactive surface area (ECSA), DA affinity, and fast interfacial charge transfer is challenging. Consequently, most reported Fe-based sensors have a high nanomolar range detection limit (LOD). Herein, we address these limitations by manipulating the phase and morphology of FeOOH/Fe2O3 heterojunctions anchored on sp2-carbon. FeOOH/Fe2O3 is synthesized by variable temperature aging of unique Fe5H9O15/Fe2O3@sp2-carbon colloidal nanoparticles, which form via chelation between biomass-derived carbon nanodots (CNDs) and Fe2+ ions. At 27 °C and 120 °C, Fe5H9O15/Fe2O3@sp2-carbon transforms into β-FeOOH/Fe2O3 nanoparticles and α-FeOOH/Fe2O3 nanosheet, respectively. The β-FeOOH/Fe2O3 interface exhibits higher eg orbital electron occupancy than α-FeOOH/Fe2O3, thereby facilitating oxygen adsorption and the generation of Fe2+/Fe3+ sites near the polarization potential of DA. This facilitates interfacial electron transfer between Fe3+ and DA. Moreover, its nanoparticle morphology enhances ECSA and DA adsorption compared to α-FeOOH/Fe2O3 nanosheets. With a LOD of ~3.11 nM, β-FeOOH/Fe2O3 surpasses the lower threshold in humans (~10 nM) and matches noble-metal sensors. Furthermore, it exhibits selective detection of DA over 10 biochemicals in urine. Therefore, the β-FeOOH/Fe2O3@sp2-C platform holds promise as a low-cost, easy-to-synthesize, and practical voltammetric DA monitor.

Metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) effect based on silver nanoparticles with different UV spectra on a surface carbon dot-based novel dry platform

In this work, to enhance the fluorescence quantum yield of carbon dots (CDs), a novel metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) structure was designed by decorating CDs on silver nanoparticle (AgNPs) film. The glass slide-AgNPs (GS-AgNPs) structure was fabricated using the electrostatic adsorption method, and the AgNPs-CDs structures were prepared by the direct drying method, which then formed the GS-AgNPs-CDs composite structure. In this structure, the MEF effect was found to be size dependent by changing the 5 types of AgNPs with different sizes. And the MEF effect also decreased as the distance between the AgNPs and CDs increased by using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) to separate the AgNPs and CDs. This hybrid structure can be used as a fluorescence detection platform and the recorded fluorescence intensity of GS-AgNPs 428 nm-CDs achieved a maximum enhancement factor (EF) of 31.72. Considering the high enhancement factor, this system may become promising to find potential applications in biochemical assay fields.

Recent advances in waste-derived carbon dots and their nanocomposites for environmental remediation and biological applications

The surging demand for eco-friendly nanomaterial synthesis has spurred the emergence of green approaches for synthesizing carbon dots (CDs). These methods utilized natural carbon sources, such as different kind of waste for CDs synthesis, underscoring their significance in waste management and circular economy initiatives. Furthermore, the properties of CDs can be tailored by their functionalization with different materials, enabling their versatile utilization in diverse scientific domains. In this regard, the current study delves into an in-depth review of recent advances in the green/sustainable fabrication of carbon dots nanocomposites (CDNCs) with metal/metal oxides and polymers within the timeframe of 2019-2023. It begins by categorizing different types of CDs, analyzing their associated nanocomposites with mechanistic insights. The primary focus is on green synthesis methods, particularly those that employ waste materials. Furthermore, we also discussed the applications of these CDs in both environmental and biological fields by covering areas such as catalysis, photocatalysis, heavy metal ion sensing, antimicrobial, and bioimaging with in-depth underlying mechanisms. At last, the review highlights the significant challenges with future directions. These include the pursuit of cost-effective green precursors, the advancement of streamlined one-step synthesis techniques, and their efficient utilization for diverse applications. Therefore, this review provides valuable insights for researchers seeking to enhance the functionality and sustainability of CDNCs by highlighting their potential to address environmental and biological challenges.

Facile synthesis of Fe2O3, Fe2O3@CuO and WO3 nanoparticles: characterization, structure determination and evaluation of their biological activity

Due to their high specific surface area and its characteristic's functionalized nanomaterials have great potential in medical applications specialty, as an anticancer. Herein, functional nanoparticles (NPs) based on iron oxide Fe2O3, iron oxide modified with copper oxide Fe2O3@CuO, and tungsten oxide WO3 were facile synthesized for biomedical applications. The obtained nanomaterials have nanocrystal sizes of 35.5 nm for Fe2O3, 7 nm for Fe2O3@CuO, and 25.5 nm for WO3. In addition to octahedral and square nanoplates for Fe2O3, and WO3; respectively. Results revealed that Fe2O3, Fe2O3@CuO, and WO3 NPs showed remarked anticancer effects versus a safe effect on normal cells through cytotoxicity test using MTT-assay. Notably, synthesized NPs e.g. our result demonstrated that Fe2O3@CuO exhibited the lowest IC50 value on the MCF-7 cancer cell line at about 8.876 µg/ml, compared to Fe2O3 was 12.87 µg/ml and WO3 was 9.211 µg/ml which indicate that the modification NPs Fe2O3@CuO gave the highest antiproliferative effect against breast cancer. However, these NPs showed a safe mode toward the Vero normal cell line, where IC50 were monitored as 40.24 µg/ml for Fe2O3, 21.13 µg/ml for Fe2O3@CuO, and 25.41 µg/ml for WO3 NPs. For further evidence. The antiviral activity using virucidal and viral adsorption mechanisms gave practiced effect by viral adsorption mechanism and prevented the virus from replicating inside the cells. Fe2O3@CuO and WO3 NPs showed a complete reduction in the viral load synergistic effect of combinations between the tested two materials copper oxide instead of iron oxide alone. Interestingly, the antimicrobial efficiency of Fe2O3@CuO NPs, Fe2O3NPs, and WO3NPs was evaluated using E. coli, S. aureus, and C. albicans pathogens. The widest microbial inhibition zone (ca. 38.45 mm) was observed with 250 mg/ml of WO3 NPs against E. coli, whereas using 40 mg/ml of Fe2O3@CuO NPS could form microbial inhibition zone ca. 32.86 mm against S. aureus. Nevertheless, C. albicans was relatively resistant to all examined NPs. The superior biomedical activities of these nanostructures might be due to their unique features and accepted evaluations.

Paper-based ratiometric fluorescent sensing platform based on mixed quantum dots for the detection of glucose in urine

A paper-based ratiometric fluorescent sensing platform has been developed for glucose detection based on a dual-emission fluorescent probe consisting of carbon quantum dots (C QDs) and CdTe QDs. When the two kinds of QDs are mixed, the fluorescence of C QDs is reversibly quenched by CdTe QDs. However, in the presence of glucose, the fluorescence of CdTe QDs is quenched by H2O2 catalyzed by glucose oxidase (GOx), which restores the fluorescence of C QDs. The proposed paper-based ratiometric fluorescent sensing platform exhibited good sensitivity and selectivity towards glucose. The working linear range was 0.1 mM to 50 mM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.026 mM. Additionally, the proposed paper-based sensor possesses viability for the determination of glucose in actual urine samples.

Therapeutic applications of carbon nanomaterials in renal cancer

Carbon nanomaterials (CNMs), including carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene, and nanodiamonds (NDs), have shown great promise in detecting and treating numerous cancers, including kidney cancer. CNMs can increase the sensitivity of diagnostic techniques for better kidney cancer identification and surveillance. They enable targeted medicine delivery specifically to tumour locations, with little effect on healthy tissue. Because of their unique chemical and physical characteristics, they can avoid the body's defence mechanisms, making it easier to accumulate where tumours exist. Consequently, CNMs provide more effective drug delivery to kidney cancer cells. It also helps in improving the efficacy of treatment. This review explores the potential of several CNMs in improving therapeutic strategies for kidney cancer. We briefly covered the physicochemical properties and therapeutic applications of CNMs. Additionally, we discussed how structural modifications in CNMs enhance their precision in treating renal cancer. A thorough overview of CNM-based gene, peptide, and drug delivery strategies for the treatment of renal cancer is presented in this review. It covers information on other CNM-based therapeutic approaches, such as hyperthermia, photodynamic therapy, and photoacoustic therapy. Also, the interactions of CNMs with the tumour microenvironment (TME) are explored, including modulation of the immune response, regulation of tumour hypoxia, interactions between CNMs and TME cells, effects of TME pH on CNMs, and more. Finally, potential side effects of CNMs, such as toxicity, bio corona formation, enzymatic degradation, and biocompatibility, are also discussed.

Predictable incorporation of nitrogen into carbon dots: insights from pinacol rearrangement and iminium ion cyclization

Nitrogen-doped carbon dots (CDs) have attracted considerable attention across various research areas and applications due to their enhanced optical properties and photostability. However, the mechanism of nitrogen incorporation in CDs remains elusive, hampering the precise control over nitrogen-incorporated structures and the investigation of the effects of nitrogen on the electronic structure and optical properties of CDs. In this study, we employed a rational design approach, utilizing glucosamine and ethylene glycol as the carbon source and co-reagent, respectively, to synthesize N-doped CDs. Our synthesis strategy involved pinacol rearrangement and iminium ion cyclization reactions, enabling the reliable formation of N-doped CDs. Notably, the resulting CDs exhibited distinctive emissive states attributed to heteroatomic defect structures, including oxygenic and nitrogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. To gain further insights into their energy levels and electronic transitions, we conducted comprehensive investigations, employing extended Hückel calculations and pump-probe spectroscopy. The synthesized CDs displayed great promise as bioimaging and photodynamic therapy agents, highlighting their potential for biomedical applications. Moreover, our study significantly contributes valuable insights into the rational design of N-doped CDs with controllable chemical and electronic structures, thereby paving the way for advancements in their diverse range of applications.

Synthesis, properties and potential applications of photoluminescent carbon nanoparticles: A review

Photoluminescent-carbon nanoparticles (PL-CNPs) are a new class of materials that received immense interest among researchers due to their distinct characteristics, including photoluminescence, high surface-to-volume ratio, low cost, ease of synthesis, high quantum yield, and biocompatibility. By exploiting these outstanding properties, many studies have been reported on its utility as sensors, photocatalysts, probes for bio-imaging, and optoelectronics applications. From clinical applications to point-of-care test devices, drug loading to tracking of drug delivery, and other research innovations demonstrated PL-CNPs as an emerging material that could substitute conventional approaches. However, some of the PL-CNPs have poor PL properties and selectivity due to the presence of impurities (e.g., molecular fluorophores) and unfavourable surface charges by the passivation molecules, which impede their applications in many fields. To address these issues, many researchers have been paying great attention to developing new PL-CNPs with different composite combinations to achieve high PL properties and selectivity. Herein, we thoroughly discussed the recent development of various synthetic strategies employed to prepare PL-CNPs, doping effects, photostability, biocompatibility, and applications in sensing, bioimaging, and drug delivery fields. Moreover, the review discussed the limitations, future direction, and perspectives of PL-CNPs in possible potential applications.

Dual Emission Carbon Dots for Simultaneous Detections of Pb2+ and Fe3+ Ions in Water Via Distinct Sensing Mechanisms

Herein, dual-emission carbon dots (DE-CDs) were synthesized using a one-pot hydrothermal method. DE-CDs exhibited two well-separated peaks at 433 and 513 nm under ultraviolet excitation. The prepared DE-CDs offer selective detection of Fe3+ ions via inner filter effect (IFE) and Pb2+ ions via aggregation-induced enhancement (AIE). The obtained DE-CDs showed a good affinity for both Fe3+ and Pb2+ ions in the presence of various interfering ions. The limits of detection were 0.797 ppm and 4.739 ppm for Pb2+ and Fe3+, respectively. The finding reveals the huge potential of DE-CDs for the selective detection of multiple targets in one solution.

Design, Synthesis, and Antiproliferative Activity of Novel Neocryptolepine-Rhodanine Hybrids

A series of novel neocryptolepine-rhodanine hybrids (9a,b, 11a-d, 14, and 16a,b) have been synthesized by combining neocryptolepine core 5 modified at the C-11 position with rhodanine condensed with the appropriate aryl/hetero aryl aldehydes. Based on these findings, the structures of the hybrids were confirmed by spectral analyses. By employing the MTT assay, all hybrids were tested for their in vitro antiproliferative activity against two cancer cell lines, including MDA-MB-231 (human breast) and HepG-2 (hepatocellular carcinoma). Interestingly, the IC50 values of all hybrids except 9b and 11c showed activity comparable to the standard anticancer drug, 5-fluorouracil, against HepG-2 cancer cells. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity of all the synthesized hybrids was investigated on a normal skin human cell line (BJ-1), and the results showed that these compounds had no significant cytotoxicity toward these healthy cells at the highest concentration used in this study. This study also indicated that the active hybrids exert their cytotoxic activity via the induction of apoptosis. A molecular docking study was used to shed light on the molecular mechanism of their anticancer activity. The docking results revealed that the hybrids exert their mode of action through DNA intercalation. Furthermore, in silico assessment for pharmacokinetic properties was performed on the most potent compounds, which revealed candidates with good bioavailability, high tolerability with cell membranes, and positive drug-likeness values.

Enhanced fluorescent iron oxide quantum dots for rapid and interference free recognizing lysine in dairy products

In this work, a simple, easy and selective method for sensing lysine in an acidic medium was developed based on fluorescent iron oxide quantum dots (IO QDs). IO QDs using the hydrothermal method were prepared with different conditions (concentration of NPs, amount of citric acid, heating time, heating temperature, and total volume in the hydrothermal reactor) where iron oxide nanoparticles (IO NPs) were used as the starting materials. TEM, FTIR, UV-Vis Spectrometry, fluorescence spectrometry, Powder XRD, VSM were used to characterize the as-prepared IO QDs. The surface of the IO QDs contained -OH, -COO^-, and other functional groups that acted as a bridge to bind the IO QDs nanoprobe with the surrounding analytes. Under acidic conditions (pH 3.0), IO QDs exhibited a rapid and interference-free fluorescence enhancement behavior after adding lysine within 2 min at room temperature, whereas other amino acids had no effect on IO QDs fluorescence. Therefore, the IO QDs prepared in this study have shown potential in lysine sensing applications. The results showed that the relative FL intensity was linear with lysine concentration in the range of 1-100 μM and had a detection limit of 0.66 μM. This proposed method has high selectivity for lysine over other amino acids, and the developed methods were used in real sample with good recoveries. Under relatively acidic conditions, a specific and fast lysine interaction was observed, resulting in the successful of IO QDs as the fluorescent probe for rapid and interference-free lysine assessment in dairy products.

Cation-π aggregation-induced white emission of moisture-resistant carbon quantum dots: a comprehensive spectroscopic study

Controlling mechanisms involved in the aggregation of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) can lead to new application developments for these quantum dot materials. In this study, an unusual aggregation-induced white emission of CQDs with strong intrinsic green emission is reported. Due to the deprotonation/protonation of the surface functional groups during the aggregation of CQDs induced by pH variations of the solution through the addition of sodium hydroxide, and hydrophobic interactions between CQDs, it results in the formation of aggregated CQDs through an avalanche-like process. Our results suggest that sodium hydroxide not only plays a critical role in the formation of strong cation-π interactions, but also polishes the surface of CQDs, leading to the formation of the aggregated CQDs. The aggregated CQDs present excellent dispersibility characteristics in water. Moreover, optical studies suggest a combined aggregation mechanism in the presence of both J-type and H-type aggregation monoliths involved in forming the aggregated CQDs. The findings obtained from the deconvolution of the as-synthesized CQDs can perceptively elucidate the cation-π aggregation process.

Curcumin assisted green synthesis of silver and zinc oxide nanostructures and their antibacterial activity against some clinical pathogenic multi-drug resistant bacteria

According to WHO warnings, the antibiotic resistance crisis is a severe health issue in the 21st century, attributed to the overuse and misuse of these medications. Consequently, the dramatic spreading rate of the drug-resistant microbial pathogens strains. The microbiological, biochemical tests and antibiotic sensitivity identified the bacteria's multi-drug resistance (MDR). About 150 different clinical samples were taken from hospitalized patients, both males, and females, ranging from 9 to 68 years. Gram-negative strains were (70.0%), while Gram-positive isolates were (30.0%). Among sixteen antibiotics, antibiotic susceptibility of imipenem was found to be the most efficient drug against most of the Gram-negative and Gram-positive isolates, followed by meropenem, depending on the culture and sensitivity results. All the experimental bacteria showed multidrug-resistant phenomena. In this study, green synthesized silver (Cur-Ag NPs) and zinc oxide (Cur-ZnO NPs) nanoparticles in the presence of curcumin extract. In addition, their physicochemical properties have been characterized using different techniques such as UV-Vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and colloidal properties techniques. Furthermore, curcumin-capped silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) exhibited solid antimicrobial action against the experimental bacterial isolates, except Proteus vulgaris (i.e., P. vulgaris). Curcumin-capped zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) found antimicrobial activity against all tested strains. Finally, the minimum inhibitory concentration exhibited values from 3.9 to 15.6 μg ml⁻¹, which is too small compared to other traditional antibiotics. In addition, the green-synthesized Cur-Ag NPs and Cur-ZnO NPs showed good biocompatibility.

Curcumin-assisted synthesized Ag and ZnO NPs showed significant antibacterial activity with lower minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against the multi-drug resistance bacteria and biocompatibility compared to traditionally used antibiotics.

Photoinduced charge separation in functional carbon-silver nanohybrids

In recent times, nanoscience is devoting growing interest to the easy assembly of well-established nanomaterials into hybrid nanostructures displaying new emerging features. Here, we study the photophysicochemical response of binary nanohybrids obtained by the spontaneous coupling of luminescent carbon dots to silver nanoparticles with controlled surface charge. Evidence of the successful coupling is obtained by steady-state and time resolved optical measurements and further confirmed by direct imaging. We demonstrate strong interactions within nanohybrids, which can be modelled in terms of a sub-picosecond electron transfer from photoexcited carbon dots to silver nanoparticles. Accordingly, newly designed nanohybrids display significant photocatalytic performance demonstrated by the photodegradation of methylene blue under ultraviolet-visible light. Our results provide an exhaustive picture of the optical response of these self-assembled carbon-silver nanohybrids and show their promise as a new class of eco-friendly materials for light-driven catalytic applications.

Development of Red-Emissive Carbon Dots for Bioimaging through a Building Block Approach: Fundamental and Applied Studies

In recent years, many researchers have struggled to obtain carbon dots (CDs) that possess strong photoluminescence in the red region of light. Success in this area has been limited, although the past few years have brought several promising reports on this topic. The most successful efforts in this area still seem to struggle from a lack of dispersibility/reduced emission in water. This work endeavors to understand the formation process of CDs that do not possess strong performance in an aqueous environment and to improve their capabilities in bioimaging. o-Phenylenediamine (o-PDA) is used along with various precursors in several different solvents (varying acidic and oxidative strengths) to understand the formation process behind the structure leading to red emission that is sensitive to water. These results showed that the combination of acid properties and oxidation is essential for this process, and the important reactions are oligomerization of o-PDA and the crosslinking of these oligomers to form aromatic structural segments of CDs. These CDs are shown to be capable of quantitatively detecting water in organic solvents. Additionally, we have shown that conjugation with transferrin remarkably enhances the biocompatibility of these CDs. Transferrin-conjugated CDs with better biocompatibility were applied to bioimaging studies of neuroblastoma cell lines with N-myc and non-N-myc gene amplification, for the first time. Furthermore, CDs showed versatile bioimaging capability toward a highly aggressive neuroblastoma subgroup of tumors. The importance of creating red-emissive CDs has been well established, and this work is an important step toward understanding their formation and realizing their use in biological systems.

Click chemistry based synthesis, cytotoxic activity and molecular docking of novel triazole-thienopyrimidine hybrid glycosides targeting EGFR

In the current study, new thienopyrimidine conjugates bearing 1,2,3-triazole core and different sugar moieties have been designed and synthesized by Cu(I)-catalysed click dipolar cycloaddition. The cytotoxic activity of the synthesised conjugates 2, 5, 7, and 13-18 was studied against HCT-116 and MCF-7 cell lines by the MTT assay. The triazole glycosides 16 and 18 provided significant cytotoxic activities against HCT-116 cell lines comparable to that of doxorubicin and other studied compounds. The cytotoxic behaviour against MCF-7 exhibited that all the investigated compounds were more potent than doxorubicin. Moreover, all screened targets were evaluated against mutant EGFR kinase type L858R and the results revealed that the acetylated 1,2,3-triazole glycosides 13-18 exhibited excellent EGFR inhibitory activity in comparison with gefitinib. Furthermore, molecular modelling studies were performed to investigate the binding affinity of the most active compounds to EGFR enzyme.

Biogenic Synthesis of MnO2 Nanoparticles With Leaf Extract of Viola betonicifolia for Enhanced Antioxidant, Antimicrobial, Cytotoxic, and Biocompatible Applications

In this study, we propose to synthesize NPs using plant extract containing active biomedical components, with the goal of obtaining NPs that inherit the biomedical activities of the plant. Herein, we report the synthesis of manganese dioxide nanoparticles (VBLE-MnO₂ NPs) using the leaves extract of Viola betonicifolia, in which the biological active plant's secondary metabolites function as both reducing and capping agents. The synthesized NPs were successfully characterized with different spectroscopic techniques. The antibacterial, antifungal, and biofilm inhibition properties of the synthesized VBLE-MnO₂ NPs were further explored against a variety of bacteria (Gram-positive and Gram-negative) and mycological species. Additionally, their antioxidant ability against linoleic acid peroxidation inhibition, cytobiocompatibility with hMSC cells, and cytotoxicity against MCF-7 cells were investigated compared to leaves extract and chemically synthesized manganese dioxide NPs (CH-MnO₂ NPs). The results were demonstrated that the synthesized VBLE-MnO₂ NPs presented excellent antibacterial, antifungal, and biofilm inhibition performance against all the tested microbial species compared to plant leaves extract and CH-MnO₂ NPs. Moreover, they also exhibited significant antioxidant potential, which was comparable to the external standard (ascorbic acid); however, it was higher than plant leaves extract and CH-MnO₂ NPs. Furthermore, the synthesized CH-MnO₂ NPs displayed good cytobiocompatibility with hMSC cells compared to CH-MnO₂ NPs. The enhanced antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, and biofilm inhibition efficacy as compared to CH-MnO₂ NPs might be attributed to the synergistic effect of the VBLE-MnO₂ NPs' physical properties and the adsorbed biologically active phytomolecules from the leaves extract of V. betonicifolia on their surface. Thus, our study establishes a novel ecologically acceptable route for nanomaterials' fabrication with increased and/or extra medicinal functions derived from their herbal origins.

Green Synthesized Gold Nanoparticles Using Viola betonicifolia Leaves Extract: Characterization, Antimicrobial, Antioxidant, and Cytobiocompatible Activities

Introduction

Viola betonicifolia is a rich source of numerous secondary metabolites, such as alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, phenolic compounds, saponins, triterpenoids, and so on, that are biologically active towards different potential biomedical applications. To broaden the potential use of Viola betonicifolia in the realm of bionanotechnology, we investigated the plant's ability to synthesize gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) in a green and efficient manner for the very first time.

Methods

The gold nanoparticles (VB-Au NPs) were synthesized using the leaves extract of Viola betonicifolia, in which plant's secondary metabolites function as both reducing and capping agents. The VB-Au NPs were successfully characterized with spectroscopic techniques. The antimicrobial properties of the VB-Au NPs were further explored against bacterial and mycological species. Additionally, their antioxidant, cytotoxic, and cytobiocompatibility properties were examined in vitro against linoleic acid peroxidation, MCF-7 cancer cells, and human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs), respectively.

Results

Results demonstrated that VB-Au NPs presented excellent antibacterial, antifungal, and biofilm inhibition performance against all the tested microbial species compared to plant leaves extract and commercially purchased chemically synthesized gold NPs (CH-Au NPs). Moreover, they also exhibited significant antioxidant potential, comparable to the external standard. The VB-Au NPs displayed good cytobiocompatibility with hMSCs and demonstrated excellent cytotoxic potential against MCF-7 cancer cells compared to CH-Au NPs. The current work presents a green method for synthesizing VB-Au NPs with enhanced antioxidant, antimicrobial, cytotoxic and biofilm inhibition efficacy compared to CH-Au NPs might be attributed to the synergistic effect of the nanoparticle's physical properties and the adsorbed biologically active phytomolecules from the plant leaves extract on their surface.

Conclusion

Thus, our study establishes a novel ecologically acceptable route for nanomaterials' fabrication with increased and/or extra medicinal functions derived from their herbal origins.

Production of nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots with controllable emission wavelength, excellent sensing of Fe3+ in aqueous solution, and potential application for stealth quick response coding in the visible regime

Nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) exhibit a high quantum yield with controllable emission wavelength and intensity in the blue-green regime. N-CQDs were tested and determined to be thermally and optically stable during 150 °C heat treatment and prolonged UV irradiation. Potential applications of N-CQDs were demonstrated, including excellent Fe³⁺ sensing in aqueous solution, fluorescent polymer fibres, and stealth quick response coding at visible wavelengths.

Carbon quantum dots have received attention due to their environmental friendliness, low biological toxicity and production cost. Polymer–CQD composite fibers, detection of Fe³⁺, and stealthy fluorescent labels made by thermal transfer printing are potential applications.

High Degradation of Methylene Blue Using a New Nanocomposite Based on Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8

The development of broad-spectrum ultraviolet- and visible-light photocatalysts constitutes one of the most significant challenges in the field of photocatalytic pollutant removal. Here, the efficiency of the directly prepared nitrogen-doped quantum zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-8-dot catalyst for the photocatalytic degradation of the methylene blue dye was reported. The prepared catalysts were characterized using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, X-ray diffraction, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques. Under sunlight irradiation, the 1% nitrogen-doped quantum-ZIF-8-dot catalyst showed 75% photodegradation in half an hour and ≈93% photodegradation after 3 hours compared to ≈87% for the ZIF-8 metal-organic framework. The high performance of the 1% nitrogen-doped quantum-ZIF-8-dot catalyst was attributed to the synergism between the catalyst components, upconverted fluorescence property of nitrogen-doped quantum dots, and charge (electrons-holes) separation. The reactive radical test revealed that the hydroxyl radical was dominant. The step-scheme heterojunction mechanism for photocatalytic degradation was also deduced. The kinetic study through the photocatalytic isotherms revealed that the pseudo-first-order kinetic model can describe the reaction mechanism.

Bioactive glass doped with noble metal nanoparticles for bone regeneration: in vitro kinetics and proliferative impact on human bone cell line

This work investigates the bioactivity of novel silver-doped (BG-Ag) and gold-doped (BG-Au) quaternary 46S6 bioactive glasses synthesized via a semi-solid-state technique. A pseudo-second-order kinetic model successfully predicted the in vitro uptake kinetic profiles of the initial ion-exchange release of Ca in simulated body fluid, the subsequent Si release, and finally, the adsorption of Ca and P onto the bioactive glasses. Doping with silver nanoparticles enhanced the rate of P uptake by up to approximately 90%; whereas doping with gold nanoparticles improved Ca and P uptake rates by up to about 7 and 2 times, respectively; as well as Ca uptake capacity by up to about 19%. The results revealed that the combined effect of Ca and Si release, and possibly the release of silver and gold ions into solution, influenced apatite formation due to their effect on Ca and P uptake rate and capacity. In general, gold-doped bioactive glasses are favoured for enhancing Ca and P uptake rates in addition to Ca uptake capacity. However, silver-doped bioactive glasses being less expensive can be utilized for applications targeting rapid healing. In vitro studies showed that BG, BG-Ag and BG-Au had no cytotoxic effects on osteosarcoma MG-63 cells, while they exhibited a remarkable cell proliferation even at low concentration. The prepared bioactive glass doped with noble metal nanoparticles could be potentially used in bone regeneration applications.

Leftover Kiwi Fruit Peel-Derived Carbon Dots as a Highly Selective Fluorescent Sensor for Detection of Ferric Ion

Recently, the use of natural products for the synthesis of carbon dots (CDs) has received much attention. Herein, leftover kiwi (Actinidia Deliciosa) fruit peels were successfully turned into beneficial fluorescent carbon dots (KN-CDs) via the hydrothermal-carbonization route. KN-CDs 1 and KN-CDs 2 were prepared without and with ammonium hydroxide, respectively. KN-CDs 1 and KN-CDs 2 were systematically characterized by various analytical techniques. Synthesized KN-CDs showed spherical-shaped morphology with narrow size distribution and excellent optical properties with excitation-independent behaviors. The quantum yields of KN-CDs 1 and KN-CDs 2 were calculated as 14 and 19%, respectively. Additionally, the KN-CDs possess excellent prolonging and photostability. Because of the excellent optical properties of KN-CDs, they were utilized as fluorescent sensors. The strong fluorescence of the KN-CDs was selectively quenched by Fe3+ ion, and quenching behavior showed a linear correlation with the concentrations of Fe3+ ion. KN-CDs 1 and KN-CDs 2 showed the detection of Fe3+ ions within the concentration range of 5–25 µM with the detection limit of 0.95 and 0.85 µM, respectively. Based on the turn-off sensing by the detection of Fe3+ ions, KN-CDs would be a promising candidate as a selective and sensitive fluorescent sensor.

Discovery of New Pyrazolopyridine, Furopyridine, and Pyridine Derivatives as CDK2 Inhibitors: Design, Synthesis, Docking Studies, and Anti-Proliferative Activity

New pyridine, pyrazoloyridine, and furopyridine derivatives substituted with naphthyl and thienyl moieties were designed and synthesized starting from 6-(naphthalen-2-yl)-2-oxo-4-(thiophen-2-yl)-1,2-dihydropyridine-3-carbonitrile (1). The chloro, methoxy, cholroacetoxy, imidazolyl, azide, and arylamino derivatives were prepared to obtain the pyridine-⁻C² functionalized derivatives. The derived pyrazolpyridine-N-glycosides were synthesized via heterocyclization of the C²-thioxopyridine derivative followed by glycosylation using glucose and galactose. The furopyridine derivative 14 and the tricyclic pyrido[3′,2′:4,5]furo[3,2-d]pyrimidine 15 were prepared via heterocyclization of the ester derivative followed by a reaction with formamide. The newly synthesized compounds were evaluated for their ability to in vitro inhibit the CDK2 enzyme. In addition, the cytotoxicity of the compounds was tested against four different human cancer cell lines (HCT-116, MCF-7, HepG2, and A549). The CDK2/cyclin A2 enzyme inhibitory results revealed that pyridone 1, 2-chloro-6-(naphthalen-2-yl)-4-(thiophen-2-yl)nicotinonitrile (4), 6-(naphthalen-2-yl)-4-(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridin-3-amine (8), S-(3-cyano-6-(naphthaen-2-yl)-4-(thiophen-2-yl)pyridin-2-yl) 2-chloroethanethioate (11), and ethyl 3-amino-6-(naphthalen-2-yl)-4-(thiophen-2-yl)furo[2,3-b]pyridine-2-carboxylate (14) are among the most active inhibitors with IC₅₀ values of 0.57, 0.24, 0.65, 0.50, and 0.93 µM, respectively, compared to roscovitine (IC₅₀ 0.394 μM). Most compounds showed significant inhibition on different human cancer cell lines (HCT-116, MCF-7, HepG2, and A549) with IC₅₀ ranges of 31.3–49.0, 19.3–55.5, 22.7–44.8, and 36.8–70.7 μM, respectively compared to doxorubicin (IC₅₀ 40.0, 64.8, 24.7 and 58.1 µM, respectively). Furthermore, a molecular docking study suggests that most of the target compounds have a similar binding mode as a reference compound in the active site of the CDK2 enzyme. The structural requirements controlling the CDK2 inhibitory activity were determined through the generation of a statistically significant 2D-QSAR model.

Surface engineered amphiphilic carbon dots: solvatochromic behavior and applicability as a molecular probe

Carbon dots (C-dots) have attracted great attention in the fields of nanotechnology and bioengineering owing to their unique and tunable optical properties with excellent photoluminescence characteristics. Herein, we have engineered amphiphilic C-dots (AC-dots) using positional isomers of diamino benzene with citric acid under mild microwave irradiation to minimize any background reactions. The optical properties changed from excitation-dependent to excitation-independent depending on the isomer used. This unique optical property of the AC-dots was studied in the presence of various solvents and we extensively inspected the AC-dot-solvent interactions. The intensity of the emission wavelength varied with solvent polarity and showed a linear relationship. Furthermore, we extended this property to investigate the molecular environment in biomolecular systems such as proteins. Interestingly, we found that, in the presence of various proteins, the emission intensity was enhanced, quenched or remained unchanged depending on the nature of the protein surface. The mode of interaction between AC-dots and protein was determined using temperature-dependent fluorescence spectroscopy. This study could provide vital information about the surfaces of proteins and the potential application of C-Dots as a fluorescent probe to detect biological molecules and environments.

Metformin derived carbon dots: Highly biocompatible fluorescent nanomaterials as mitochondrial targeting and blood-brain barrier penetrating biomarkers

Carbon dots (CDs) have been intensively studied since their discovery in 2004 because of their unique properties such as low toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, high photoluminescence (PL) and good water dispersibility. In this study metformin derived carbon dots (Met-CDs) were synthesized using a microwave assisted method. Met-CDs were meticulously characterized using ultra-violet spectroscopy (UV-vis), photoluminescence (PL), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force (AFM) and transmission electron (TEM) microscopies. According to results of cytotoxicity studies, Met-CDs possess low-toxicity and excellent biocompatibility towards both non-tumor and tumor cell lines indicating that Met-CDs are outstanding candidates for living cell bioimaging studies. Furthermore, bioimaging studies have displayed that Met-CDs can penetrate the cell membrane and disperse throughout the cell structure including the nucleus and mitochondria. More specifically, Met-CDs tend to start localizing selectively inside the mitochondria of cancer cells, but not of non-tumor cells after 1 h of incubation. Finally, a zebrafish study confirmed that Met-CDs cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) without the need of any other ligands. In summary, this study presents synthesis of Met-CDs which feature abilities such as mitochondrial and nucleus localizations along with BBB penetration.

Blue-light emitting aminated pectin for detecting Cu2+ ion

This research studied the chemo-sensing of low-cost aminated pectin (PE) obtained by a facile calcination under ammonia gas at temperature no higher than 175 °C without excessive use of alkaline, acid or solvents. The ammonia gas was found to replace the hydroxyl and methoxyl group, enhancing the crystallinity and solubility of the resultant pectin than those calcined in air or in 5% H₂. Though the increase of light absorption could be attributed mainly to the dehydration during calcination which caused the formation of CC double bond or aromatic ring, the N incorporation could be important to the photoluminescence (PL) emission. The PL quenching of the blue fluorescent aminated pectin showed a good linearity with the concentration of Cu²⁺, Fe³⁺ and the highest sensitivity toward Cu²⁺ among the investigated metal ions. In order to further increase the PL quenching toward Cu²⁺ and decrease the interference of Fe³⁺, a method involving H₂O₂ and ultraviolet illumination was developed to catalyze the oxidation of fluorophores on the polymer. This work provides new horizon on the modification and application of pectin in chemosensing.

Fluorescent Nanocomposites: Hollow Silica Microspheres with Embedded Carbon Dots

Intrinsically fluorescent carbon dots may form the basis for a safer and more accurate sensor technology for digital counting in bioanalytical assays. This work presents a simple and inexpensive synthesis method for producing fluorescent carbon dots embedded in hollow silica particles. Hydrothermal treatment at low temperature (160 °C) of microporous silica particles in presence of urea and citric acid results in fluorescent, microporous and hollow nanocomposites with a surface area of 12 m² /g. High absolute zeta potential (-44 mV) at neutral pH demonstrates the high electrosteric stability of the nanocomposites in aqueous solution. Their fluorescence emission at 445 nm is remarkably stable in aqueous dispersion under a wide pH range (3-12) and in the dried state. The biocompatibility of the composite particles is excellent, as the particles were found to show low genotoxicity at exposures up to 10 μg/cm² .

Green Synthesis of Chromium Oxide Nanoparticles for Antibacterial, Antioxidant Anticancer, and Biocompatibility Activities

This study deals with the green synthesis of chromium oxide (Cr₂O₃) nanoparticles using a leaf extract of Abutilon indicum (L.) Sweet as a reducing and capping agent. Different characterization techniques were used to characterize the synthesized nanoparticles such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Transmission electron microscope (TEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) spectroscopy. The X-ray diffraction technique confirmed the purity and crystallinity of the Cr₂O₃ nanoparticles. The average size of the nanoparticles ranged from 17 to 42 nm. The antibacterial activity of the green synthesized nanoparticles was evaluated against four different bacterial strains, E. coli, S. aureus, B. bronchiseptica, and B. subtilis using agar well diffusion and a live/dead staining assay. The anticancer activities were determined against Michigan Cancer Foundation-7 (MCF-7) cancer cells using MTT and a live/dead staining assay. Antioxidant activity was investigated in the linoleic acid system. Moreover, the cytobiocompatibility was analyzed against the Vero cell lines using MTT and a live/dead staining assay. The results demonstrated that the green synthesized Cr₂O₃ nanoparticles exhibited superior antibacterial activity in terms of zones of inhibition (ZOIs) against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria compared to plant extracts and chemically synthesized Cr₂O₃ nanoparticles (commercial), but comparable to the standard drug (Leflox). The green synthesized Cr₂O₃ nanoparticles exhibited significant anticancer and antioxidant activities against MCF-7 cancerous cells and the linoleic acid system, respectively, compared to chemically synthesized Cr₂O₃ nanoparticles. Moreover, cytobiocompatibility analysis displayed that they presented excellent biocompatibility with Vero cell lines than that of chemically synthesized Cr₂O₃ nanoparticles. These results suggest that the green synthesized Cr₂O₃ nanoparticles’ enhanced biological activities might be attributed to a synergetic effect. Hence, green synthesized Cr₂O₃ nanoparticles could prove to be promising candidates for future biomedical applications.

Exploring the Potential of Carbon Dots to Combat COVID-19

Viral diseases are considered as a global burden. The eradication of viral diseases is always a challenging task in medical research due to the high infectivity and mutation capability of the virus. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is still not under control even after several months of the first reported case and global spread. Neither a specific drug nor a vaccine is available for public use yet. In the pursuit of a promising strategy, carbon dots could be considered as potential nanostructure against this viral pandemic. This review explores the possibility of carbon nano-dots to combat COVID-19 based on some reported studies. Carbon dots are photoluminescent carbon nanoparticles, smaller than 10 nm in dimension with a very attractive photostable and biocompatible properties which can be surfaced modified or functionalized. These photoluminescent tiny particles have captured much attention owing to their functionalization property and biocompatibility. In response to this pandemic outbreak, this review attempts to summarize the potential use of carbon dots in antiviral therapy with particular emphasis on their probable role in the battlefront against COVID-19 including their possible biosensing applications.

Studies on carbon-quantum-dot-embedded iron oxide nanoparticles and their electrochemical response

A report on the synthesis of carbon-quantum-dot-embedded iron oxide nanoparticles (CQD@Fe₃O₄NPs) and their improved electrochemical studies is presented. Fe₃O₄NPs and CQD@Fe₃O₄NPs were synthesized by the wet-chemical co-precipitation method. X-ray diffraction measurements exhibited pure cubic phase with Fd3m space group in Fe₃O₄NPs and CQD@Fe₃O₄NPs. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy measurements confirmed the functionalization of Fe₃O₄NPs with CQDs. Dynamic light scattering measurements revealed a hydrodynamic radius of 520 nm and 319 nm for Fe₃O₄NPs and CQD@Fe₃O₄NPs, respectively. Moreover, zeta potential measurements showed positively charged Fe₃O₄NPs and negatively charged CQD@Fe₃O₄NPs. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy measurements showed nearly spherical structure with an average size of around 7 nm for Fe₃O₄ in both samples, whereas CQDs were nearly 2 nm in size in CQD@Fe₃O₄NPs. A biocompatibility study showed that CQD@Fe₃O₄NPs were more biocompatible than the bare Fe₃O₄NPs. CQD@Fe₃O₄NPs were then dispersed in chitosan (CHIT) solution, and drop-casted onto an indium tin oxide (ITO) glass substrate for further study. Atomic force microscopy results showed improved surface roughness of the CQD@Fe₃O₄-CHIT/ITO electrode, providing a better biosensing platform. The electrochemical response studies of CQD@Fe₃O₄-CHIT/ITO also showed enhanced electrochemical signal compared to Fe₃O₄-CHIT/ITO electrodes. Thus, a CQD@Fe₃O₄-CHIT/ITO electrode was used for the detection of vitamin D₂ (10-100 ng ml^-1) using a differential pulse voltammetry technique. The sensitivity and limit of detection were obtained as 0.069 µA ng^-1 ml cm^-2 and 2.46 ng ml^-1, respectively.

A Comprehensive Review on Optical Properties of Polymer Electrolytes and Composites

Polymer electrolytes and composites have prevailed in the high performance and mobile marketplace during recent years. Polymer-based solid electrolytes possess the benefits of low flammability, excellent flexibility, good thermal stability, as well as higher safety. Several researchers have paid attention to the optical properties of polymer electrolytes and their composites. In the present review paper, first, the characteristics, fundamentals, advantages and principles of various types of polymer electrolytes were discussed. Afterward, the characteristics and performance of various polymer hosts on the basis of specific essential and newly published works were described. New developments in various approaches to investigate the optical properties of polymer electrolytes were emphasized. The last part of the review devoted to the optical band gap study using two methods: Tauc's model and optical dielectric loss parameter. Based on recently published literature sufficient quantum mechanical backgrounds were provided to support the applicability of the optical dielectric loss parameter for the band gap study. In this review paper, it was demonstrated that both Tauc's model and optical dielectric loss should be studied to specify the type of electron transition and estimate the optical band gap accurately. Other parameters such as absorption coefficient, refractive index and optical dielectric constant were also explored.

Fluorescence tuning behavior of carbon quantum dots with gold nanoparticles via novel intercalation effect of aldicarb

A simple, sensitive and rapid fluorometric system has been developed for the detection of aldicarb (ALD) based on inner filter effect (IFE) of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on fluorescence (FL) intensity of carbon quantum dots (CQDs). Addition of CQDs into AuNPs, gets them aggregated due to electrostatic interaction resulting in quenching the FL intensity of CQDs. With addition of ALD into AuNPs, an intercalated layer was formed between them through Au-N and Au-S bond which reduced IFE of AuNPs. Hence, CQDs FL intensity recovered along with ALD concentration varying between 3.8 and 76 µg L^-1 with lower detection limit of 3.02 µg L^-1. The spiked real samples study in fruits, vegetables and soft drinks revealed that this sensing platform was repeatable and effective for real samples. The validation of proposed method indicates that the ALD sensor is promising and adaptable for everyday on spot environment and food safety monitoring.

Surface Modification of Magnetic Nanoparticles by Carbon-Coating Can Increase Its Biosafety: Evidences from Biochemical and Neurobehavioral Tests in Zebrafish

Recently, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have gained much attention in the field of biomedical engineering for therapeutic as well as diagnostic purposes. Carbon magnetic nanoparticles (C-MNPs) are a class of MNPs categorized as organic nanoparticles. C-MNPs have been under considerable interest in studying in various applications such as magnetic resonance imaging, photothermal therapy, and intracellular transportof drugs. Research work is still largely in progress for testing the efficacy of C-MNPs on the theranostics platform in cellular studies and animal models. In this study, we evaluated the neurobehavioral toxicity parameters on the adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) at either low (1 ppm) or high (10 ppm) concentration level of C-MNPs over a period of two weeks by waterborne exposure. The physical properties of the synthesized C-MNPs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Raman, and XRD spectrum characterization. Multiple behavior tests for the novel tank, mirror biting, predator avoidance, conspecific social interaction, shoaling, and analysis of biochemical markers were also conducted to elucidate the corresponding mechanism. Our data demonstrate the waterborne exposure of C-MNPs is less toxic than the uncoated MNPs since neither low nor high concentration C-MNPs elicit toxicity response in behavioral and biochemical tests in adult zebrafish. The approach combining biochemical and neurobehavioral approaches would be helpful for understanding C-MNPs association affecting the bioavailability, biosafety, interaction, and uptake of these C-MNPs in the living organism.

Antiviral Activity of Chitosan Nanoparticles Encapsulating Curcumin Against Hepatitis C Virus Genotype 4a in Human Hepatoma Cell Lines

Purpose

Current direct-acting antiviral agents for treatment of hepatitis C virus genotype 4a (HCV-4a) have been reported to cause adverse effects, and therefore less toxic antivirals are needed. This study investigated the role of curcumin chitosan (CuCs) nanocomposite as a potential anti-HCV-4a agent in human hepatoma cells Huh7.

Methods

Docking of curcumin and CuCs nanocomposite and binding energy calculations were carried out. Chitosan nanoparticles (CsNPs) and CuCs nanocomposite were prepared with an ionic gelation method and characterized with TEM, zeta size and potential, and HPLC to calculate encapsulation efficiency. Cytotoxicity studies were performed on Huh7 cells using MTT assay and confirmed with cellular and molecular assays. Anti-HCV-4a activity was determined using real-time PCR and Western blot.

Results

The strength of binding interactions between protein ligand complexes gave scores with NS3 protease, NS5A polymerase, and NS5B polymerase of -124.91, -159.02, and -129.16, for curcumin respectively, and -68.51, -54.52, and -157.63 for CuCs nanocomposite, respectively. CuCs nanocomposite was prepared at sizes 29-39.5 nm and charges of 33 mV. HPLC detected 4% of curcumin encapsulated into CsNPs. IC50 was 8 µg/mL for curcumin and 25 µg/mL for the nanocomposite on Huh7 but was 25.8 µg/mL and 34 µg/mL on WISH cells. CsNPs had no cytotoxic effect on tested cell lines. Apoptotic genes' expression revealed the caspase-dependent pathway mechanism. CsNPs and CuCs nanocomposite demonstrated 100% inhibition of viral entry and replication, which was confirmed with HCV core protein expression.

Conclusion

CuCs nanocomposite inhibited HCV-4a entry and replication compared to curcumin alone, suggesting its potential role as an effective therapeutic agent.

Biological and Spectroscopic Investigations of New Tenoxicam and 1.10-Phenthroline Metal Complexes

In the present work, tenoxicam (H₂Ten) reacted with Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn (II) ions in the presence of 1.10-phenthroline (Phen), forming new mixed ligand metal complexes. The properties of the formed complexes were depicted by elemental analyses, infrared, electronic spectra, proton nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H NMR), mass spectrometry, thermogravimetric (TGA) and differential thermogravimetric (DTG) analysis, molar conductance and magnetic moment. IR spectra demonstrated that H₂Ten acted as a neutral bidentate ligand, coordinated to the metal ions via the pyridine-N and carbonyl group of the amide moiety, and Phen through the nitrogen atoms. Kinetic thermodynamics parameters activation energy (E*), enthalpy of activation (ΔH*), entropy of activation (ΔS*), Gibbs, free energy (ΔG*) associated to the complexes have been evaluated. Antibacterial screening of the compounds was carried out in vitro against Clavibacter michiganensis, Xanthomonas campestris and Bacillus megaterium. Antifungal activity was performed in vitro against Monilinia fructicola, Penicillium digitatum and Colletotrichum acutatum. The possible phytotoxic effect of the studied compounds was also investigated on Solanum lycopersicum (tomatoes) and Lepidium sativum (garden cress) seeds. The anticancer activity was screened against cell cultures of HCT-116 (human colorectal carcinoma), HepG2 (human hepatocellular carcinoma) and MCF-7 (human breast adenocarcinoma).

Peptide-Carbon Quantum Dots conjugate, Derived from Human Retinoic Acid Receptor Responder Protein 2, against Antibiotic-Resistant Gram Positive and Gram Negative Pathogenic Bacteria

Antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections have become global issues for public health, which increases the utter need to develop alternatives to antibiotics. Here, the HSER (Homo sapiens retinoic acid receptor) peptide was designed from retinoic acid receptor responder protein 2 of Homo sapiens, and was conjugated with synthesized CQDs (carbon quantum dots) for enhanced antibacterial activity in combination, as individually they are not highly effective. The HSER–CQDs were characterized using spectrophotometer, HPLC coupled with electrospray-ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer (ESI–qTOF) mass spectrometer, zeta potential, zeta size, and FTIR. Thereafter, the antibacterial activity against Vancomycin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) and Escherichia coli (carbapenem resistant) was studied using growth curve analysis, further supported by microscopic images showing the presence of cell debris and dead bacterial cells. The antibacterial mechanism of HSER–CQDs was observed to be via cell wall disruption and also interaction with gDNA (genomic DNA). Finally, toxicity test against normal human epithelial cells showed no toxicity, confirmed by microscopic analysis. Thus, the HSER–CQDs conjugate, having high stability and low toxicity with prominent antibacterial activity, can be used as a potential antibacterial agent.
