Metal Clusters Based Multifunctional Materials for Solar Cells

As a multifunctional material, metal clusters have recently received some attention for their application in solar cells.This review delves into the multifaceted role of metal clusters in advancing solar cell technologies, covering diverse aspects from electron transport and interface modification to serving as molecular precursors for inorganic materials and acting as photosensitizers in metal-cluster sensitized solar cells (MCSSCs). The studies conducted by various researchers illustrate the crucial impact of metal clusters, such as gold nanoclusters (Au NCs), on enhancing solar cell efficiency through size-dependent effects, distinct interface behaviors, and tailored interface engineering. From optimizing charge transfer rates to improving light absorption and reducing carrier recombination, metal clusters prove instrumental in shaping the landscape of solar energy conversion.The promising performance of metal-cluster sensitized solar cells, coupled with their scalability and flexibility, positions them as a exciting avenue for future clean energy applications. The article concludes by emphasizing the need for continued interdisciplinary research and technological innovation to unlock the full potential of metal clusters in contributing to sustainable and high-performance solar cells.

Theoretical research on the dye molecules with different π-bridge structures

CONTEXT

Since 1991 when Grätzel et al. improved the conversion efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells to 7.1% by applying nano technology as the first time, the researches on dye-sensitized solar cells have received widely attentions. The organic dye without precious metals has a lower cost, which is easily to get synthesized and its structure is easily decorated, owing a higher photoelectric conversion efficiency at the same time. Therefore, in recent years, the organic dye has attracted people's attentions more and more. In order to better understand the relationship between structure and properties of dye molecules, with ZL003 as a prototype, molecular modifications are then made and a scheme, with rigid fused π-bridge comprising electron-rich and deficient segments. The calculated results indicate that the π-bridge containing dithienopyrrolobenzothiadiazole and dipyrrolo-dithienobenzothiadiazole as π-bridge has been demonstrated to be successful to significantly redshift the absorption maximum wavelength, extend the lifetime of the first excited state, and decrease the energy gap between the highest occupied molecule orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecule orbital (LUMO). It is hoped that the calculation result of this paper would provide theoretical basis for the experimental synthesis of more efficient dye molecules.

METHOD

All calculations were performed in Gaussian 09 program package. The ground state geometries (S0) and the first excited state (S1) were optimized using density function theory (DFT) with the hybrid function B3LYP functional, coupled with the 6-31G(d, p) basis set for optimization of molecule ground state conformations. TD-DFT calculations of excited state energies and absorption spectra were performed using MPWPW91 functional combined with the 6-31 + G (d) basis set.

Metalloporphyrin reduced C70 fullerenes as adsorbents and detectors of ethenone; A DFT, NBO, and TD-DFT study

In the present work, the structure and electronic properties of Ti-, Cr-, Fe-, Ni-, Zn-, and Cu-inserted in porphyrin-reduced C70 fullerenes (TM-PIC70Fs) and their interactions with the ethenone were studied using DFT, NBO, and TD-DFT at CAM-B3LYP/6-31G(d) level of theory. 2.89-3.83 and 4.02-4.56 eV were obtained for the HOMO-LUMO gap energies and work functions of TM-PIC70Fs, respectively, compared with 3.76 and 4.54 eV for PIC70F. Among considered TM-PIC70Fs, the adsorption of the ethenone on Ti-PIC70F appreciably changed the HOMO-LUMO energy gap and work function. Consequently, Ti-PIC70F may be used as the ethenone's electronic conductivity and work function types sensor. According to calculated UV-visible spectra, the ethenone adsorption may change the color of Fe- and Ti-PIC70Fs. Therefore, they can be used as color-changing sensors of ethenone. In addition, Ti-, Cr-, Fe-, and Zn-PIC70Fs can be employed as suitable adsorbents of ethenone. Among proper sensors and adsorbents of ethenone, Cr-, Fe-, and Zn-PIC70Fs may be recovered and reused.

Effect of regio-specific arylamine substitution on novel π-extended zinc salophen complexes: density functional and time-dependent density functional study on DSSC applications

A series of π-extended salophen-type Schiff-base zinc(ii) complexes, e.g., zinc-salophen complexes (ZSC), were investigated toward potential applications for dye-sensitized solar cells. The ZSC dyes adopt linear-, X-, or π-shaped geometries either with the functionalization of 1 donor/1 acceptor or 2 donors/2 acceptors to achieve a push-pull type molecular structure. The frontier molecular orbitals, light-harvesting properties as well as charge transfer characters against regio-specific substitution of donor/acceptor groups were studied by using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). The results reveal that all ZSC dyes of D-ZnS-π-A geometry (where D, S, and A denote to donor, salophen ligand, and acceptor, respectively) exhibit relatively lower HOMO energy compared to the structurally resembled porphyrin dye YD2-o-C8. Natural transition orbital (NTO) and electron-hole separation (EHS) approaches clearly differentiate the linear type YD-series dyes from CL-, AJ1-, and AJ2-series dyes because of poor charge transfer (CT) properties. In contrast, the π-shaped AJ2-series and X-shaped AJ1-series dyes outperform the others in a manner of stronger CT characteristics, broadened UV-vis absorption as well as tunable bandgap simply via substitution of p-ethynylbenzoic acids (EBAs) and arylamine donors at salophen 7,8- and 2,3,12,13-positions, respectively. Both EHS and calculated exciton binding energies suggest the strength of CT character for ZSC dyes with an amino donor in the trend TPA > AN > DPA. This work has provided clear illustration toward molecular design of efficient dyes featuring a zinc-salophen backbone.

Through structural isomerism: positional effect of alkyne functionality on molecular optical properties

Literature studies on the effects of alkyne functionality in manipulating the optical properties of donor-π-acceptor-type molecular scaffolds have been scarce compared to those on the alkene functional group. Here, two structurally isomeric donor-acceptor (D-A) dyes were synthesized to study the positional effect of alkyne functionality (triple bond) on their optical, electrochemical and charge generation properties in order to design efficient dyes for possible application in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). These dyes, named CAPC and PACC, contain carbazole and cyanoacrylic acid as the donor and acceptor units, respectively, and the π-conjugation length within the molecules was controlled by the introduction of an alkyne group. The D-π-A design was followed in designing CAPC with the alkyne serving as the π-spacer, while in PACC, alkyne was placed on the donor, which was directly in conjugation with the acceptor. This rendered equal conjugation lengths within the designed dyes. With the help of photophysical characterizations, it was concluded that CAPC featured better characteristics for a DSSC dye than PACC. Our conclusions were further supported by the results of transient absorption spectroscopy, electrochemical analysis, fluorescence lifetime studies and density functional theory.

The influence of π-linkers configuration on properties of 10-hexylphenoxazine donor-based sensitizer for dye-sensitized solar cell application - Theoretical approach

10-Hexylphenoxazine based dyes with A-(π)_n-D-(π)_n-A architecture is designed and investigated systematically for dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) application by Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Time-dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT). The designed sensitizers consist of 10-Hexylphenoxazine as electron donor and cyanoacrylic acid as an acceptor, connected by the Thiophene and Cyanovinyl π-spacers configurations with symmetrical and asymmetrical form. The effect of π-spacers configurations on the electronic and optical properties of the dyes is also investigated. The optimized structure, electronic properties and absorption characteristics of A-(π)_n-D-(π)_n-A dyes were investigated. The charge separation and polarization properties are analyzed by co-planarity, natural bond orbital (NBO), dipole moment and linear polarizability studies. The free energy change of electron injection and dye regeneration of the sensitizers are also calculated. The addition of a greater number of π-spacers improves the electronic, spectroscopic, optical, and free energy properties of the designed sensitizer. The DFT studies also reveal that the position of the π-spacers plays an important role in the electronic and spectroscopic properties.

Dynamic, multimodal hydrogel actuators using porphyrin-based visible light photoredox catalysis in a thermoresponsive polymer network

Hydrogels that can respond to multiple external stimuli represent the next generation of advanced functional biomaterials. Here, a series of multimodal hydrogels were synthesized that can contract and expand reversibly over several cycles while changing their mechanical properties in response to blue and red light, as well as heat (∼50 °C). The light-responsive behavior was achieved through a photoredox-based mechanism consisting of photoinduced electron transfer from a zinc porphyrin photocatalyst in its excited state to oligoviologen-based macrocrosslinkers, both of which were integrated into the hydrogel polymer network during gel formation. Orthogonal thermoresponsive properties were also realized by introducing N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAM) monomer simultaneously with hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) in the pre-gel mixture to produce a statistical 60 : 40 HEA : NIPAM polymer network. The resultant hydrogel actuators - crosslinked with either a styrenated viologen dimer (2V4+-St) or hexamer (6V12+-St) - were exposed to red or blue light, or heat, for up to 5 h, and their rate of contraction, as well as the corresponding changes in their physical properties (i.e., stiffness, tensile strength, Young's modulus, etc.), were measured. The combined application of blue light and heat to the 6V12+-St-based hydrogels was also demonstrated, resulting in hydrogels with more than two-fold faster contraction kinetics and dramatically enhanced mechanical robustness when fully contracted. We envision that the reported materials and the corresponding methods of remotely manipulating the dynamic hydrogels may serve as a useful blueprint for future adaptive materials used in biomedical applications.

On the physical-chemical nature of solvent polarizability and dipolarity

The positive solvatochromism of three dyes, with a spectral behavior strongly dependents on the medium dipolarity/polarizability, was studied theoretically. Both a polarizable continuum-solvent model (CSM) and explicit solvent molecules were employed to model solvent effects. The CSM approach, coupled with ten different TDDFT methods, yielded unsatisfactory results in eleven solvents. The explicit-solvation calculations, thought of much higher computational cost, yielded excellent results. As CSM schemes are known correctly model non-specific electrostatic effects, our results indicate that the traditionally considered non-specific nature of solvent dipolarity needs to be reconsidered, requiring the explicit consideration of the solute-solvent interactions for their accurate theoretical description.

Prediction of Absorption Spectrum Shifts in Dyes Adsorbed on Titania

Dye adsorption on metal-oxide films often results in small to substantial absorption shifts relative to the solution phase, with undesirable consequences for the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells and optical sensors. While density functional theory is frequently used to model such behaviour, it is too time-consuming for rapid assessment. In this paper, we explore the use of supervised machine learning to predict whether dye adsorption on titania is likely to induce a change in its absorption characteristics. The physicochemical features of each dye were encoded as a numeric vector whose elements are the counts of molecular fragments and topological indices. Various classification models were subsequently trained to predict the type of absorption shift i.e. blue, red or unchanged (|Δλ| ≤ 10 nm). The models were able to predict the nature of the shift with a good likelihood (~80%) of success when applied to unseen data.

UV-vis absorption spectra of Sn(IV)tetrakis(4-pyridyl) porphyrins on the basis of axial ligation and pyridine protonation

The present study highlights the structural and electronic spectra of Sn(IV)tetrakis(4-pyridyl) porphyrins (SnTP) using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). The impact of axial ligands (OH^-, Cl^-, and H₂O) and protonation at pyridine sites on the excitation properties of SnTP is also explored. The considered SnTPs were optimized at B3LYP/6-31+G* level of theory with LANL2DZ basis set for Sn metal. The effects of tetrahydrofuran (THF) and dimethylformamide (DMF) solvents were also assessed employing conductor-like polarizable continuum (C-PCM) model. The observed structural effects correlate well with the experimental data and clearly depict the impact of axial ligands on the SnTP ring. The absorption spectra along with the frontier orbitals in all three phases show noticeable dependence of axial ligation on the photophysical properties of SnTPs. The transition character of molecular orbitals and their respective density of states (DOS) were explored to infer the orbitals involved in electronic transitions. Axial ligation and pyridine protonation significantly affects the absorption properties of Sn complexes. The overall results suggest the application of [(OH^-)Sn (OH^-)TP] and [(Cl^-)Sn (Cl^-)TP] as photosensitizers.

High-Performance Near-Infrared Absorbing n-Type Porphyrin Acceptor for Organic Solar Cells

While the outstanding charge transport and sunlight-harvesting properties of porphyrin molecules are highly attractive as active materials for organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices, the development of n-type porphyrin-based electron acceptors has been challenging. In this work, we developed a high-performance porphyrin-based electron acceptor for OPVs by substitution of four naphthalene diimide (NDI) units at the perimeter of a Zn-porphyrin (P_Zn) core using ethyne linkage. Effective π-conjugation between four NDI wings and the P_Zn core significantly broadened Q-band absorption to the near infrared region, thereby achieving the narrow band gap of 1.33 eV. Employing a windmill-structured tetra-NDI substituted P_Zn-based acceptor ( P_Zn-TNDI) and mid-band gap polymer donor (PTB7-Th), the bulk heterojunction OPV devices achieved a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.15% with an energy loss of 0.61 eV. The PCE of our P_Zn-TNDI-based device was the highest among the reported OPVs using porphyrin-based acceptors. Notably, the amorphous characteristic of P_Zn-TNDI enabled optimization of the device performance without using any additive, which should make industrial fabrication simpler and cheaper.
