Nonplanar Aromaticity of Dinuclear Rare-Earth Metallacycles

While the concept of metalla-aromaticity has well been extended to transition organometallic compounds in diverse geometries, aromatic rare-earth organometallic complexes are rare due to the special (n - 1)d0 configuration and high-lying (n - 1)d orbitals of rare-earth centers. In particular, nonplanar cases of rare-earth complexes have not been reported so far. Here, we disclose the nonplanar aromaticity of dinuclear scandium and samarium metallacycles characterized by various aromaticity indices (nucleus-independent chemical shift, isochemical shielding surface, anisotropy of induced current density, and isomerization stabilization energy). Bonding analyses (Kohn-Sham molecular orbital, adaptive natural density partitioning, multicenter bond indices, and principal interacting orbital) reveal that three delocalized π orbitals, predominantly contributed by the 2-butene tetraanion ligand, result in the formation of six-electron conjugated systems. Guided by these findings, we predicted that the lutetium and gadolinium analogues of dinuclear rare-earth metallacycles should be aromatic, which have been verified by the successful synthesis of real molecules. This work extends the concept of nonplanar aromaticity to the field of rare-earth metallacycles and illuminates the path for designing and synthesizing various rare-earth metalla-aromatics.

Metallaaromaticity involving a d0 early transition metal centre: synthesis, structure, and aromaticity of tantallapyridinazirine complexes

Though late transition metal aromatic metallabenzenes and related heteroatom-containing analogues have been well studied, the corresponding aromatic early transition metal complexes remain elusive. Herein, we demonstrate the synthesis of aromatic, planar, and delocalised organotantallapyridinium complexes via a simple one-pot process by sequential treatment of tantalum methyl complex [η5:σ-Me2C(C5H4)(C2B10H10)]TaMe3 with alkynes and isocyanide. Single-crystal X-ray analyses, NMR spectroscopic data and DFT calculations suggest that they are aromatic tantallapyridinium complexes, a class of long-sought-after molecules. This work would shed some light on the preparation of metallaaromatics involving early transition metals.

Craig-Hückel Hybrid Aromatic Metalla-dehydro[11]annulenes Constructed by a Formal [10+1] Cycloaddition Reaction

Aromatic metalla-annulenes are important aromatic compounds, research into which has been mainly concentrated on metal-benzenes and their lower homologues. Reports on their superior homologs are rare, and this has greatly limited the systematic study of their properties. In this work, a series of osma-dehydro[11]annulenes with good air and thermal stability were prepared in high yields through a simple [10+1] strategy, by incorporating a metal fragment into conjugated ten-carbon chains in a one-pot reaction. They are the first monometallic aromatic metalla-[n]annulenes with the ring size larger than 6, and their Craig-Hückel hybrid aromaticity is supported by various physical and computational parameters. Besides, these complexes show versatile reactivities, not only giving further evidence for their aromaticity, but also demonstrating their physical and chemical properties can easily be regulated. This work enriches the metalla-aromatic chemistry, and provides a new avenue for the synthesis of large metalla-annulenes with different ring sizes.

Metallaaromatic Complexes as Candidates for Future Molecular Materials and Electronic Devices: Recent Advancements

In recent years, the field of organometallic chemistry has made a great progress and diverse types of metallaaromatics have successively been reported. In those studies, incorporation of ligated osmium centers into metallaaromatic systems played a prominent role. The reviewed literature documents that certain metallaaromatics with unconventional photophysical properties, redox and electronic transport properties and magnetism, have potential to be widely used in diverse practical applications, with selected examples of amino acid and fluoride anion identification, photothermal effects, functional materials, photodynamic therapy (PDT) in biomedicine, single-molecule junction conductors, and electron-transport layer materials (ETLs) in solar cells.

Experimental and theoretical evidences for the formation of transition metal complexes with five coplanar metal-carbon σ bonds

The σ bond is an important concept in chemistry, and the metal-carbon (M-C) σ bond in particular is a central feature in organometallic chemistry. Synthesis of stable complexes with five coplanar M-C σ bonds is challenging. Here, we describe the synthesis of two different types of stable complexes with five coplanar M-C σ bonds, and examine the stability of such complexes which use rigid conjugated carbon chains to chelate with the metal center. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the M-C σ bonds in these complexes have primarily a covalent character. Besides the σ nature, there are also a π conjugation component among the metal center and carbons, which causes delocalization. This work expanded the coplanar M-C σ bonds to five.

Preparation, Aromaticity, and Bromination of Spiro Iridafurans

Iridium centers of [Ir(μ-Cl)(C8H14)2]2 (1) activate the Cβ(sp2)-H bond of benzylideneacetone to give [Ir(μ-Cl){κ2-C,O-[C(Ph)CHC(Me)O]}2]2 (2), which is the starting point for the preparation of the spiro iridafurans IrCl{κ2-C,O-[C(Ph)CHC(Me)O]}2(PiPr3) (3), [Ir{κ2-C,O-[C(Ph)CHC(Me)O]}2(MeCN)2]BF4 (4), [Ir(μ-OH){κ2-C,O-[C(Ph)CHC(Me)O]}2]2 (5), Ir{κ2-C,O-[C(Ph)CHC(Me)O]}2{κ2-C,N-[C6MeH3-py]} (6), and Ir{κ2-C,O-[C(Ph)CHC(Me)O]}2{κ2-O,O-[acac]} (7). The five-membered rings are orthogonally arranged with the oxygen atoms in trans in an octahedral environment of the iridium atom. Spiro iridafurans are aromatic. The degree of aromaticity and the negative charge of the CH-carbon of the rings depend on ligand trans to the carbon directly attached to the metal. Aromaticity has been experimentally confirmed by bromination of iridafurans with N-bromosuccinimide (NBS). Reactions are sensitive to the degree of aromaticity of the ring and the negative charge of the attacked CH-carbon. Iridafurans can be selectively brominated, when different ligands lie trans to metalated carbons. Bromination of 3 occurs in the ring with the metalated carbon trans to chloride, whereas the bromination of 6 takes place in the ring with the metalated carbon trans to pyridyl. The first gives IrCl{κ2-C,O-[C(Ph)CBrC(Me)O]}{κ2-C,O-[C(Ph)CHC(Me)O]}(PiPr3) (8), which reacts with more NBS to form IrCl{κ2-C,O-[C(Ph)CBrC(Me)O]}2(PiPr3) (9). The second yields Ir{κ2-C,O-[C(Ph)CBrC(Me)O]}{κ2-C,O-[C(Ph)CHC(Me)O]}{κ2-C,N-[C6MeH3-py]} (10). The origin of the selectivity is kinetic, with the rate-determining step of the reaction being the NBS attack. The activation energy depends on the negative charge of the attacked atom; a higher negative charge allows for a lower activation energy. Accordingly, complex 7 undergoes bromination in the acetylacetonate ligand, giving Ir{κ2-C,O-[C(Ph)CHC(Me)O]}2{κ2-O,O-[acacBr]} (11).

Reshaping aromatic frameworks: expansion of aromatic system drives metallabenzenoids to metallapentalenes

Reshaping an aromatic framework to generate other skeletons is a challenging issue due to the stabilization energy of aromaticity. Such reconfigurations of aromatics commonly generate non-aromatic products and hardly ever reshape to a different aromatic framework. Herein, we present the transformation of metallaindenols to metallapentalenes and metallaindenes in divergent pathways, converting one aromatic framework to another with an extension of the conjugation framework. The mechanistic study of this transformation shows that phosphorus ligands play different roles in the divergent processes. Further theoretical studies indicate that the expansion of the aromatic system is the driving force promoting this skeletal rearrangement. Our findings offer a new concept and strategy to reshape and construct aromatic compounds.

Stereoelectronic Modulation of a Single-Molecule Junction through a Tunable Metal-Carbon dπ-pπ Hyperconjugation

Conjugated molecules play a critical role in the construction of single-molecule devices. However, most conventional conjugated molecules, such as hydrocarbons, involve only a pπ-pπ conjugation of light elements. While the metal d-orbitals can introduce abundant electronic effects to achieve novel electronic properties, it is very scarce for the charge transport study of dπ-pπ conjugated pathways with a metal involved. Here, we employed the single-molecule break junction technique to investigate the charge transport through dπ-pπ conjugated backbones with metal-carbon multiple bonds integrated into the alternative conjugated pathways. The involved dπ-pπ conjugation not only supports high conductivity comparable to that of conjugated hydrocarbons but also significantly enhances the tunable diversity in electronic properties through the metal-induced secondary interaction. Specifically, the introduction of the metal brings an unconventionally stereoelectronic effect triggered by metal-carbon dπ-pπ hyperconjugation, which can be tuned by protonation taking place on the metal-carbon multiple bonds, collectively modulating the single-molecule rectification feature and transmission mechanism. This work demonstrates the promise of utilizing the diverse electronic effect of metals to design molecular devices.

Hetero-carbolong chemistry: experimental and theoretical studies of diaza-metallapentalenes

Four diaza-osmapentalenes were prepared by two-step reactions, through the treatment of an alkyne-coordinated osmium complex with azo compounds, followed by the addition of AgSbF₆/CO. Their aromaticity was confirmed by crystal parameters, NMR spectra and theoretical calculations. These complexes are the first diaza-metallapentalenes representing a new class of metallaaromatics.

Osmathiazole Ring: Extrapolation of an Aromatic Purely Organic System to Organometallic Chemistry

An osmathiazole skeleton has been generated starting from the cation of the salt [OsH(OH)(≡CPh)(IPr)(PiPr3)]OTf (1; IPr = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolylidene; OTf = CF3SO3) and thioacetamide; its aromaticity degree was compared with that of thiazole, and its aromatic reactivity was confirmed through a reaction with phenylacetylene. Salt 1 reacts with the thioamide to initially afford the synthetic intermediate [OsH{κ2-N,S-[NHC(CH3)S]}(≡CPh)(IPr)(PiPr3)]OTf (2). Thioamidate and alkylidyne ligands of 2 couple in acetonitrile at 70 °C, forming a 1:1 mixture of the salts [OsH{κ2-C,S-[C(Ph)NHC(CH3)S]}(CH3CN)(IPr)(PiPr3)]OTf (3) and [Os{κ2-C,S-[CH(Ph)NHC(CH3)S]}(CH3CN)3(IPr)]OTf (4). Treatment of 3 with potassium tert-butoxide produces the NH-deprotonation of its five-membered ring and gives OsH{κ2-C,S-[C(Ph)NC(CH3)S]}(IPr)(PiPr3) (5). The osmathiazole ring of 5 is slightly less aromatic than the osmathiazolium cycle of 3 and the purely organic thiazole. However, it is more aromatic than related osmaoxazoles and osmaoxazoliums. There are significant differences in behavior between 3 and 5 toward phenylacetylene. In acetonitrile, the cation of 3 loses the phosphine and adds the alkyne to afford [Os{η3-C3,κ1-S-[CH2C(Ph)C(Ph)NHC(CH3)S]}(CH3CN)2(IPr)]OTf (6), bearing a functionalized allyl ligand. In contrast, the osmathiazole ring of 5 undergoes a vicarious nucleophilic substitution of hydride, by acetylide, via the dihydride OsH2(C≡CPh){κ2-C,S-[C(Ph)NC(CH3)S]}(IPr)(PiPr3) (7), which releases H2 to yield Os(C≡CPh){κ2-C,S-[C(Ph)NC(CH3)S]}(IPr)(PiPr3) (8).

Unique Properties and Emerging Applications of Carbolong Metallaaromatics

ConspectusAromatic compounds are important in synthetic chemistry, biomedicines, and materials science. As a special type of aromatic complex, transition-metal-based metallaaromatics contain at least one transition metal in an aromatic framework. The chemistry of metallaaromatics has seen much progress in computational studies and synthetic methods, but their properties and applications are still emerging. In recent years, we have disclosed a series of metal-centered conjugated polycyclic metallacycles in which a carbon chain is chelated to a metal center through at least three metal-carbon bonds. These are termed carbolong complexes and exhibit good stability to water, oxygen, light, and heat on account of their polydentate chelation and aromaticity, making them easy to handle. Carbolong complexes are not only special π-conjugated aromatics but also organometallics; therefore, they have the properties of both species. In this Account, we showcase the recent advances in their applications based on their different properties.First, carbolong complexes are a special kind of π-conjugated aromatic, with the ability to transmit electrons, allowing them to function as single-molecule conductors and candidates for electron transporting layer materials (ETLs) in solar cells. A series of carbolong complexes have been proved to be useful as achievable ETLs which enhance device performance in both organic solar cells and perovskite solar cells.Second, due to the involvement of d orbitals in the conjugation, carbolong complexes normally exhibit strong and broad absorption, even in some cases extending to the near-infrared region (NIR). The absorbed optical energy can be converted into light, heat, and ultrasound; consequently, carbolong compounds can be used as core moieties in smart materials. For example, 7C carbolong complexes were found to exhibit aggregation-enhanced near-infrared emission (AIEE). Some 12C carbolong complexes have been designed into the core moieties of NIR-responsive polymers, such as cylindrical NIR-responsive materials, self-healing materials, and shape memory materials. In contrast to the stereotypically toxic osmium compounds such as the highly toxic OsO₄, some osmium carbolong complexes exhibit low cell cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility; consequently, they also have potential applications in the biomedical area. For example, benefiting from broad absorption in the NIR, 9C and 12C carbolong complexes have been used in photoacoustic imaging and photothermal therapy, respectively. In addition, photodynamic therapeutic applications which take advantage of a carbolong peroxo complex are discussed.Third, as special transition-metal complexes chelated by carbon-based ligands, a carbolong peroxo complex has displayed catalytic activity in the dehydrogenation of alcohols and a bimetallic carbolong complex has been used to catalyze difunctionalization reactions of unactivated alkenes.Overall, aromatic carbolong complexes have been applied to photovoltaics, smart materials, phototherapy, and catalytic reactions. Moving forward, we hope that this Account will shed light on future studies and theoretical research and encourage more discoveries of the properties of other metallaaromatics.

Expanding the series of alkali metal plumbolyl complexes to Na and K

Herein we detail the straightforward and scalable synthesis of sodium and potassium complexes of the 2,5-bis(tert-butyldimethylsilyl)-3,4-diphenylplumbolyl dianion (Pbl^TBS,Ph). Their solid-state structures were found to comprise either monomeric solvates or coordination polymers depending on the alkali metal ion and crystallization medium. These complexes were readily prepared with high yields and purity compared to known routes to the dilithium congener of Pbl^TBS,Ph and are well-positioned to serve as convenient precursors for salt metathesis-type reactions leading to metal complexes of the understudied Pbl^TBS,Ph ligand.

An aromatic dimetallapolycyclic complex with two rhenapyrylium rings

Extension of the polycyclic benzo-rhenapyrylium structure by a fused metallaaromatic ring and a benzene unit are reported. The dirhena-aromatic complex 4 shows strong absorption in the visible region and a significant absorption in the near-infrared (NIR) region (λ_max = 842 nm). DFT calculations are performed to understand its aromatic nature and electronic behavior.

Introduction of plumbole to f-element chemistry

Herein, we present the synthesis and characterization of heteroleptic lanthanide complexes bearing a dianionic η5-plumbole ligand in their coordination sphere. The reaction proceeds via a salt elimination reaction between the dilithioplumbole ([Li(thf)]2[1,4-bis-tert-butyl-dimethylsilyl-2,3-bis-phenyl-plumbolyl] = [Li2(thf)2(η5-LPb)]) and specifically designed [Ln(η8-COTTIPS)BH4] precursors (Ln = lanthanide, La, Ce, Sm, Er; COTTIPS = 1,4-bis-triisopropylsilyl-cyclooctatetraenyl), that are capable of stabilizing a planar plumbole moiety in the coordination sphere of different trivalent lanthanide ions. In-depth ab initio calculations show that the aromaticity of the dianionic plumbole is retained upon coordination. Electron delocalization occurs from the plumbole HOMO to an orbital of mainly d-character at the lanthanide ion. The magnetic properties of the erbium congener were investigated in detail, leading to the observation of magnetic hysteresis up to 5 K (200 Oe s-1), an unequivocal proof for single molecule magnet behavior in this system. The magnetic behavior of the erbium species can be modulated by manipulating the position of the lithium cation in the complex, which directly influences the bonding metrics in the central [(η5-LPb)Er(η8-COTTIPS)]- fragment. This allowed us to assess a fundamental magneto-structural correlation in an otherwise identical inner coordination sphere.

Inorganic salt-assisted assembly of anionic π-conjugated rings enabling 7Li NMR-based evaluation of antiaromaticity

Triple-decker complexes incorporating three distinct deck architectures

The reactivity of the dilithioplumbole ([Li₂(thf)₂(μ,η⁵-L^Pb)], L^Pb = 1,4-bis-tert-butyl-dimethylsilyl-2,3-bis-phenyl-plumbolyl) towards the reactive pnictogen precursors P₄, pentaphosphaferrocene, and pentaarsaferrocene ([Cp*Fe(η⁵-E₅)] (Cp* = η⁵-C₅Me₅, E = P, As)) is reported. The reaction with P₄ afforded a phospholyl lithium complex, via lead-phosphorus exchange, while the reactions with [Cp*Fe(η⁵-E₅)] yielded the first examples of Pb-Fe-Li heterotrimetallic triple-decker polypnictogenides with three different deck motifs.

Dissimilarity in the Chemical Behavior of Osmaoxazolium Salts and Osmaoxazoles: Two Different Aromatic Metalladiheterocycles

The preparation of aromatic hydride-osmaoxazolium and hydride-oxazole compounds is reported and their reactivity toward phenylacetylene investigated. Complex [OsH(OH)(≡CPh)(IPr)(PⁱPr₃)]OTf (1; IPr = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolylidene, OTf = CF₃SO₃) reacts with acetonitrile and benzonitrile to give [OsH{κ²-C,O-[C(Ph)NHC(R)O]}(NCR)(IPr)(PⁱPr₃)]OTf (R = Me (2), Ph (3)) via amidate intermediates, which are generated by addition of the hydroxide ligand to the nitrile. In agreement with this, the addition of 2-phenylacetamide to acetonitrile solutions of 1 gives [OsH{κ²-C,O-[C(Ph)NHC(CH₂Ph)O]}(NCCH₃)(IPr)(PⁱPr₃)]OTf (4). The deprotonation of the osmaoxazolium ring of 2 and 4 leads to the oxazole derivatives OsH{κ²-C,O-[C(Ph)NC(R)O]}(IPr)(PⁱPr₃) (R = Me (5), CH₂Ph (6)). Complexes 2 and 4 add their Os–H and Os–C bonds to the C–C triple bond of phenylacetylene to afford [Os{η³-C₃,κ¹-O-[CH₂C(Ph)C(Ph)NHC(R)O]}(NCCH₃)₂(IPr)]OTf (R = Me (7), CH₂Ph (8)), bearing a tridentate amide-N-functionalized allyl ligand, while complexes 5 and 6 undergo a vicarious nucleophilic substitution of the hydride at the metal center with the alkyne, via the compressed dihydride adduct intermediates OsH₂(C≡CPh){κ²-C,O-[C(Ph)NC(R)O]}(IPr)(PⁱPr₃) (R = Me (9), CH₂Ph (10)), which reductively eliminate H₂ to yield the acetylide-osmaoxazoles Os(C≡CPh){κ²-C,O-[C(Ph)NC(R)O]}(IPr)(PⁱPr₃) (R = Me (11), CH₂Ph (12)).

Metalla-phenalene complexes: synthesis, structure and aromaticity

Metallaaromatics show a diversity of aromaticity. In this work, we report the synthesis and structural characterization of the first rhena-phenalene complexes. In addition to the Hückel aromaticity and σ-aromaticity, pseudo π anti-aromaticity is observed. DFT computations show that this anti-aromaticity (paramagnetic properties) is induced by the fused aromatic naphthyl ring.

Transmetalation Reactions of Aromatic Dilithionickelole: Synthesis of Heterobimetallic Complexes Featuring Metalloles as Diene Ligands

The aromatic metallole dianions are important metallaaromatic compounds because of their various reactivities and extensive synthetic applications. Herein we report the reactions of dilithionickelole with MgCl₂ , EtAlCl₂ , Cp*ScCl₂ , Cp*LuCl₂ and Pt(COD)Cl₂ (COD=1,5-cyclooctadiene) affording a series of Ni/M heterobimetallic complexes of the general formula (η⁴ -C₄ R₄ M)Ni(COD), in which the metalloles act as diene ligands, as suggested by single-crystal X-ray, NMR and theoretical analyses. In these reactions, two electrons of the nickelole dianion transferred to Ni, representing different reactivity compared with main-group metallole dianions.

A new strategy for hyperconjugative antiaromatic compounds utilizing negative charges: a dibenzo[b,f]silepinyl dianion

Herein we propose a new strategy for hyperconjugative antiaromatic compounds utilizing negative charges and design the 5,5-diphenyldibenzo[b,f]silepinyl dianion (pseudo 16π-electron system) in which negative hyperconjugation occurs between the anionic π-cloud and the σ*(Si-Ph) orbital. Essentially, reduction of the dibenzo[b,f]silepin with lithium readily generated a dilithium salt of the dibenzosilepinyl dianion, and its hyperconjugative antiaromaticity has been evidenced by the upfield shifts of ¹H NMR signals and theoretical calculations, including large NICS_zz values and ACID plots.

Electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions of compounds with Craig-Möbius aromaticity

Electrophilic aromatic substitution (EAS) reactions are widely regarded as characteristic reactions of aromatic species, but no comparable reaction has been reported for molecules with Craig-Möbius aromaticity. Here, we demonstrate successful EAS reactions of Craig-Möbius aromatics, osmapentalenes, and fused osmapentalenes. The highly reactive nature of osmapentalene makes it susceptible to electrophilic attack by halogens, thus osmapentalene, osmafuran-fused osmapentalene, and osmabenzene-fused osmapentalene can undergo typical EAS reactions. In addition, the selective formation of a series of halogen substituted metalla-aromatics via EAS reactions has revealed an unprecedented approach to otherwise elusive compounds such as the unsaturated cyclic chlorirenium ions. Density functional theory calculations were conducted to study the electronic effect on the regioselectivity of the EAS reactions.

Heavier element-containing aromatics of [4n+2]-electron systems

While the implication of the aromaticity concept has been dramatically expanded to date since its emergence in 1865, the classical [4n+2]/4n-electron counting protocol still plays an essential role in evaluating the aromatic nature of compounds. Over the last few decades, a variety of heavier heterocycles featuring the formal [4n+2] π-electron arrangements have been developed, which allows for assessing their aromatic nature. In this review, we present recent developments of the [4n+2]-electron systems of heavier heterocycles involving group 13-15 elements. The synthesis, spectroscopic data, structural parameters, computational data, and reactivity are introduced.

Carbolong chemistry: nucleophilic aromatic substitution of a triflate functionalized iridapentalene

The reactivity of the triflate functionalized iridapentalene 1, [Ir{[double bond, length as m-dash]CHC(CH₂C(CO₂Me)₂CH₂)[double bond, length as m-dash]CC[double bond, length as m-dash]CHC(OTf)[double bond, length as m-dash]CH}(CO)(PPh₃)₂]OTf, with C-, N-, O- and S-centered neutral nucleophiles was studied, leading to the isolation of a wide array of irida-carbolong derivatives. As an extension, a polycyclic complex with a rare six-fused-ring structure was constructed. This strategy provides a new route for the construction of functionalized metallaaromatic complexes, and the resulting iridacycles exhibit broad spectral absorption ranges, making them potential photoelectric materials.

Metalla-aromatics: Planar, Nonplanar, and Spiro

ConspectusThe concept of aromaticity is one of the most fundamental principles in chemistry. It is generally accepted that planarity is a prerequisite for aromaticity, and typically the more planar the geometry of an aromatic compound is, the stronger aromatic it is. However, it is not always the case, particularly when transition metals are involved in conjugation and electron delocalization of aromatic systems, i.e., metalla-aromatics. Because of the intrinsic nature of transition-metal orbitals, besides planar geometries, the most stable molecular structures of metalla-aromatic compounds could take nonplanar and even spiro geometries. In this Account, we outline several unprecedented types of metalla-aromatics developed recently in our research group.Around seven years ago, we found that 1,4-dilithio-1,3-butadienes, dilithio reagents with π-conjugation, could function as non-innocent ligands and react with low-valent transition-metal complexes, generating monocyclic metalla-aromatic compounds. Later on, by taking advantage of the unique behavior of dilithio reagents and the intrinsic nature of different transition metals, we have synthesized a series of metalla-aromatic compounds, of which four types are discussed here, and each of them represents the first of its kind. First, nearly planar aromatic dicupra[10]annulenes, a 10 π-electron aromatic system with two bridging Cu atoms participating in the orbital conjugation and electron delocalization, are synthesized by annulating two dilithio reagents with two Cu(I) complexes.Second, four kinds of spiro metalla-aromatics, featuring planar (with Pd, Pt, or Rh as the spiro atom) geometry with a whole 10π aromatic system, octahedral (tris-spiro metalla-aromatics with V as the spiro atom) geometry with an entire 40π Craig-Möbius aromatic system, tetrahedral (with Mn as the spiro atom) geometry having two independent and perpendicular 6π planar aromatic rings, and tetrahedral (with Mn as the spiro atom) geometry with one planar and one nonplanar 6π aromatic rings, respectively, are generated. In sharp contrast to spiroaromaticity with carbon acting as the spiro atom described in Organic Chemistry, the metal spiro atom herein takes part in orbital conjugation and electron delocalization.Third, nonplanar aromatic butadienyl diiron complexes are realized. Different from planar aromatic systems featuring delocalized π-type overlap, this nonplanar metalla-aromaticity is achieved by the novel σ-type overlap between the two Fe 3d_xz orbitals and the butadienyl π orbital, forming a 6π aromatic system. Fourth, dinickelaferrocene, a ferrocene analogue with two aromatic nickeloles, is synthesized from our monocyclic aromatic dilithionickelole and FeBr₂. The aromaticity of dinickelaferrocene and its nickelole ligands is realized by electron back-donation from the Fe 3d orbital to the π* orbital of nickeloles, which also deepens our understanding of the origin of aromaticity.The search for unprecedented and exciting aromatic systems, particularly with transition metals being involved, will continue to drive this intriguing research field forward. Given the synthetic strategies and various types of metalla-aromatics developed and described, diversified metalla-aromatics of interesting structures and reaction chemistry, novel chemical bonding modes, and useful functions can be expected.

A tris-spiro metalla-aromatic system featuring Craig-Möbius aromaticity

As aromaticity is one of the most fundamental concepts in chemistry, the construction of aromatic systems has long been an important subject. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of a tris-spiroaromatic complex, hexalithio spiro vanadacycle 2. The delocalization of the four electrons within the two V 3d orbitals and the π* orbitals of the three biphenyl ligands leads to a 40π Craig-Möbius aromatic system with three metalla-aromatic rings, as revealed by both experimental measurements and theoretical analyses. For comparison, if Cr is used instead of V, a similar Craig-Möbius aromatic system can not be generated. In this case, pentalithio spiro chromacycle 3 is obtained, and the Cr center uses its two 3d orbitals to form two independent metalla-aromatic rings. This work presents a type of aromatic systems that will contribute to both aromaticity theory and organometallic chemistry.

Chemistry inside a Porphyrin Skeleton: Platinacyclopentadiene from Tellurophene

Platinum(II) binds to 21,23-ditelluraporphyrin forming a side-on complex, which can be easily transformed into an aromatic metallaporphyrin, that is, 21-platina-23-telluraporphyrin, with a platinacyclopentadiene unit built in the porphyrin skeleton in place of one pyrrole ring. The central platinum(II) ion with a CCNTe square-planar coordination sphere can be oxidized to platinum(IV) by chlorine, bromine, methyl iodide or allyl chloride to yield octahedral complexes. All platinatelluraporphyrins show dynamic behavior involving the platinum ion coordination sphere fluxionality and the porphyrin skeleton deformation, both in-plane and out-of-plane, as demonstrated by ¹ H NMR spectroscopy.

Metallaaromatic Chemistry: History and Development

Since the prediction of the existence of metallabenzenes in 1979, metallaaromatic chemistry has developed rapidly, due to its importance in both experimental and theoretical fields. Now six major types of metallaromatic compounds, metallabenzenes, metallabenzynes, heterometallaaromatics, dianion metalloles, metallapentalenes and metallapentalynes (also termed carbolongs), and spiro metalloles, have been reported and extensively studied. Their parent organic analogues may be aromatic, non-aromatic, or even anti-aromatic. These unique systems not only enrich the large family of aromatics, but they also broaden our understanding and extend the concept of aromaticity. This review provides a comprehensive overview of metallaaromatic chemistry. We have focused on not only the six major classes of metallaaromatics, including the main-group-metal-based metallaaromatics, but also other types, such as metallacyclobutadienes and metallacyclopropenes. The structures, synthetic methods, and reactivities are described, their applications are covered, and the challenges and future prospects of the area are discussed. The criteria commonly used to judge the aromaticity of metallaaromatics are presented.

Butadienyl Diiron Complexes: Nonplanar Metalla-Aromatics Involving σ-Type Orbital Overlap

A new class of nonplanar metalla-aromatics, diiron complexes bridged by a 1,3-butadienyl dianionic ligand, were synthesized in high yields from dilithio reagents and two equivalents of FeBr₂ . The complexes consist of two antiferromagnetically coupled high-spin Fe^II centers, as revealed by magnetometry, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. Furthermore, experimental (X-ray structural analysis) and theoretical analyses (NICS, ICSS, AICD, MOs) suggest that the complexes are aromatic. Remarkably, this nonplanar metalla-aromaticity is achieved by an uncommon σ-type overlap between the ligand p and metal d orbitals, in sharp contrast to the intensively studied planar aromatic systems featuring delocalized π-type bonding. Specifically, the σ-type interaction between the two Fe 3d_xz orbitals and the butadienyl π orbital results in the formation of a six-electron conjugated system and hence enables the aromatic character.

Dioxygen Activation by Internally Aromatic Metallacycle: Crystallographic Structure and Mechanistic Investigations

Mononuclear metal-peroxo species are invoked as the key intermediates in metalloenzymatic or synthetic catalysis. However, either transience or sluggishness reactivity of synthetic analogs of metal-peroxo species impedes our understanding of oxygen activation mechanism. Herein, we designed and characterized a dioxygen-derived mononuclear osmium-peroxo complex, in which the peroxo ligand is stabilized by internally aromatic metallacycle. We demonstrate that the osmium-peroxo species shows catalytic activity toward promoterless alcohol dehydrogenations. Furthermore, computational studies provide a new mechanism for the osmium-peroxo-mediated alcohol oxidation, starting with the concerted double-hydrogen transfer and followed by the generation of osmium-oxo species. Interestingly, the internally aromatic metallacycle also plays a vital role in catalysis, which mediates the hydrogen transfer from osmium center to the distal oxygen atom of Os–OOH moiety, thus facilitating the Os–OOH→Os=O conversion. We expect that these insights will advance the development of aromatic metallacycle toward aerobic oxidation catalysis.

Dinickelaferrocene: A Ferrocene Analogue with Two Aromatic Nickeloles Realized by Electron Back-Donation from Iron

The first example of ferrocene analogues with two transition-metal metallole ligands of the general formula (η⁵ -C₄ R₄ M)₂ Fe in a sandwich structure are reported. Specifically, dinickelaferrocene 2, a type of dimetallametallocene, is efficiently synthesized from the reaction of dilithionickelole 1 with FeBr₂ or FeCl₂ , presumably via a redox process, and is subjected to detailed experimental (single-crystal X-ray structural analysis, ICP-OES, magnetometry, ⁵⁷ Fe Mössbauer, XPS) and theoretical (MOs, CDA, NICS, ICSS, and AICD) characterizations. Unlike ferrocene and its Cp ligands, the aromaticity of dinickelaferrocene and its nickelole ligands is accomplished by electron back-donation from the Fe 3d orbitals to the π* orbitals of nickelole. Taken together, this work describes a new class of metallaferrocene sandwich complexes and provides a novel approach to effect aromaticity that will contribute to further development of metallocene chemistry.

2-Butene Tetraanion Bridged Dinuclear Samarium(III) Complexes via Sm(II)-Mediated Reduction of Electron-Rich Olefins

While reduction reactions are ubiquitous in chemistry, it is very challenging to further reduce electron-rich compounds, especially the anionic ones. In this work, the reduction of 1,3-butadienyl dianion, the anionic conjugated olefin, has been realized by divalent rare-earth metal compounds (SmI₂), resulting in the formation of novel 2-butene tetraanion bridged disamarium(III) complexes. Density functional theory (DFT) analyses reveal two features: (i) the single electron transfer (SET) from 4f atomic orbitals (AOs) of each Sm center to the antibonding π*-orbitals of 1,3-butadienyl dianion is feasible and the new HOMO formed by the bonding interaction between Sm 5d orbitals (AOs) and the π*-orbitals of 1,3-butadienyl dianion can accept favorably 2e^- from 4f AOs of Sm(II); (ii) the 2-butene tetraanionic ligand serves as a unique 10e^- donating system, in which 4e^- act as two σ-donation bonding interactions while the rest 6e^- as three π-donation bonding interactions. The disamarium(III) complexes represent a unique class of the bridged bis-alkylidene rare-earth organometallic complexes. The ligand-based reductive reactivity of 2-butene tetraanion bridged disamarium(III) complexes demonstrates that 2-butene tetraanionic ligand serves as a 3e^- reductant toward cyclooctatetraene (COT) to provide doubly COT-supported disamarabutadiene complexes. The reaction of the disamarium(III) complexes with Cp*Li produces the doubly Cp*-coordinated Sm(III) complexes via salt metathesis. In addition, the reaction with Mo(CO)₆ affords the oxycyclopentadienyl dinuclear complex via CO insertion.

Trishomoaromatic (B3 N3 Ph6 ) Dianion: Characterization and Two-Electron Reduction

Benzene, a common aromatic compound, can be converted into an unstable antiaromatic 8π-electron intermediate through two-electron reduction. However, as an isoelectronic equivalent of benzene, borazine (B₃ N₃ Ph₆ ), having weak aromaticity, undergoes a totally different two-electron reduction to afford (B₃ N₃ R₆ )^2- homoaromatic compounds. Reported here is the synthesis of homoaromatic (B₃ N₃ Ph₆ )^2- by the reduction of B₃ N₃ Ph₆ with either potassium or rubidium in the presence of 18-crown-6 ether. Theoretical investigations illustrate that two electrons delocalize over the three boron atoms in (B₃ N₃ Ph₆ )^2- , which is formed by the geometric and orbital reorganization and exhibits (π,σ)-mixed homoaromaticity. Moreover, (B₃ N₃ Ph₆ )^2- can act as a robust 2e reductant for unsaturated compounds, such as anthracene, chalcone, and tanshinones. This 2e reduction is of high efficiency and selectivity, proceeds under mild reaction conditions, and can regenerate neutral borazine.

Trialkylsilyl-Substituted Silole and Germole Dianions as Precursors for Unusual Silicon and Germanium Compounds

Group 14 element heteroles are the heavier analogues of cyclopentadienes in which a heavier group 14 element atom replaces the sp³ carbon atom. In particular siloles and, to a somewhat smaller degree, germoles attracted considerable attention since the early 1990s due to their favorable photophysical properties which allowed the construction of OLEDs using group 14 element heteroles as emissive or electron-transport layers. Anions and in particular dianions derived from group 14 element heteroles have been of substantial interest due to the possible occurrence of Hückel aromaticity involving the heavier main group atom. Aromaticity is not the only notable electronic feature of silole and germole dianions; the spatial and energetic alignment of their frontier orbitals is equally remarkable. With a high lying lone pair at the heteroatom, which is orthogonal to a delocalized π-system, their frontier orbital sequence closely resembles that of N-heterocyclic carbene analogues. Despite these intriguing parallels between carbene analogues and silole and germole dianions, disappointingly little is known about their reactivity. The installation of trialkylsilyl substituents in the 2,5-positions of the heterocyclopentadiene ring as in K₂[I] has a remarkable effect on the stability of silole and germole dianions and allows us to study their reactivity and to evaluate their synthetic potential in detail. Simple double salt metathesis reactions with different dihalides provided heterofulvenes. These were detected either as intermediates or, in the case of carbon dihalides, isolated in the form of their ylidic isomers II. In other cases, the heterofulvenes were the starting point for complex reaction sequences leading to novel binuclear complexes of titanium and zirconium III or for simple isomerization reactions that lead to bicyclohexene-type tetrylenes (BCH-tetrylenes) IV, a novel class of heavier carbenes. These bicyclic carbene analogues are significantly stabilized by homoconjugation between the electron deficient tetrel atom and the remote C═C double bond. Compound IV with E'R₂═SiR₂ and E = Si is a valence isomer of disilabenzene and is a stable derivative of the global minimum of the Si₂C₄H₆ potential energy surface. With group 13 dihalides, as for example with boron dichlorides, topological closely related compounds V were isolated. These Ge(II) complexes of borole dianions are isolobal to half-sandwich complexes of main group elements such as aluminum(I) cyclopentadienide or can be viewed as nido-type clusters. These analogies already open a broad field for future investigations of their reactivity. Trialkylsilyl-substituted heterole dianions I provide a facile synthetic approach to several novel intriguing compound classes with the tetrel element in unusual coordination states. The reactivity and the synthetic potential of these new compounds is however widely unexplored and calls for future systematic studies. Gratifyingly, the periodic table of the elements stills holds a lot of potential for future research on the reactivity of silole and germole dianions.
