Luminescent zero-dimensional organic metal halide hybrids with near-unity quantum efficiency

Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Halide X-ray Scintillator with High Antiwater Stability

In recent years, low-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides have garnered significant attention for optoelectronic applications due to their exceptional photophysical properties, despite their persistent challenge of low stability. Addressing this challenge, our study introduces 1-[5-(trifluoromethyl)pyridin-2-yl]piperazinium (TFPP) as a cation, harvesting a novel one-dimensional hybrid cadmium-based halide semiconductor (TFPP)CdCl4, which exhibits intense blue-light emission upon UV excitation. Additionally, (TFPP)CdCl4 demonstrates a high scintillation performance under X-ray excitation, producing 16600 ± 500 photons MeV-1 and achieving a low detection limit of 0.891 μGyair s-1. Notably, (TFPP)CdCl4 showcases remarkable stability against water, intense light sources, heating, and corrosive environments, positioning it as a promising candidate for optoelectronic applications. Through a blend of experimental techniques and theoretical analyses, including density functional theory calculations, we elucidate the unique photophysical properties and structural stability of (TFPP)CdCl4. These findings significantly contribute to the understanding of low-dimensional hybrid halide semiconductors, offering valuable insights into their potential application in advanced optoelectronic devices and paving the way for further research in this field.

Ultrasound-assisted nucleation and growth of hydroxyl-protected and ligand-free Cs3Cu2X5 nanocrystals with bright luminescence

The commercial applications of lead halide perovskites are hindered by their negative environmental impact and inherent instability. Consequently, developing environmentally friendly copper-based perovskite materials is crucial for future solid-state lighting and display applications. In this study, an ultrafast high-power ultrasonic synthesis strategy was utilized to achieve uniform nucleation and growth of Cs3Cu2X5 (X = Cl, Br, I) nanocrystals (NCs) that possess remarkable luminescence properties, hydroxyl protection, and ligand-free characteristics. These Cs3Cu2X5 NCs exhibited a tunable spectral range spanning from 446 to 525 nm, accompanied by photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) varying from 0.2% to 79.2%. The spectral attributes of the NCs were effectively controlled by modulating the halide type and composition. It is worth noting that density functional theory (DFT) calculations offer valuable insights into the synthesis of NCs and the selection of suitable alcohol solvents. Moreover, we successfully fabricated an efficient and stable white light-emitting diode (WLED) with a high luminous efficiency of 23 lm W-1 and CIE color coordinates of (0.3266, 0.3487). Our work provides a new strategy to synthesize Cs3Cu2X5 NCs and holds promise for their potential application in display and lighting devices.

Amine-directed synthesis, valence state control, and optical properties of two new organic-inorganic tin chlorides

Two organic-inorganic tin chlorides, namely (C9H26N3Cl)SnCl4 (1) and (C9H26N3Cl)SnCl6 (2), were prepared via valence state control using N,N,N',N'',N''-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as a structure-directing agent. The two compounds have zero-dimensional structures crystallized in non-centrosymmetric orthorhombic space group Cmc21 and P212121, respectively. In compound 1, the divalent tin ion forms a seesaw coordination configuration with four chloride ions, whereas in compound 2, the tetravalent tin ion forms an octahedral coordination configuration with six chloride ions. The two compounds show a moderate second-harmonic generation response under 1064 nm laser irradiation. Notably, compound 2 displays a bright orange luminescence with a photoluminescence quantum yield of 19.67%. Theoretical calculations were performed to gain insights into the optical properties of the two compounds.

Large-Area Transparent Antimony-Based Perovskite Glass for High-Resolution X-ray Imaging

Nonlead low-dimensional halide perovskites attract considerable attention as X-ray scintillators. However, most scintillation screens exhibit pronounced light scattering, which detrimentally reduces the quality of X-ray imaging. Herein, we employed a simple and straightforward solvent-free melt-quenching method to fabricate a large-area zero-dimension (0D) antimony-based perovskite transparent medium, namely (C20H20P)2SbCl5 (C20H20P+ = ethyltriphenylphosphine). The transparency is due to the large steric hindrance of C20H20P+, which hinders the formation of crystals during the quenching process, thus forming a glass with low refractive index and uniform structure. This medium exhibits a high transmittance exceeding 80% in the range of 450-800 nm and shows a large Stokes shift of 245 nm, thereby minimizing light scattering, mitigating self-absorption, and enhancing the clarity of X-ray imaging. Moreover, it exhibits a high radioluminescence light yield of ∼12,535 photons MeV-1 and displays a high X-ray spatial resolution of 30 lp mm-1 owing to its high transparency. This study presents an alternative candidate for achieving high-quality X-ray detection and extends the applicability of transparent perovskite scintillators.

Achieving Near-Unity Red Light Photoluminescence in Antimony Halide Crystals via Polyhedron Regulation

Exploration of efficient red emitting antimony hybrid halide with large Stokes shift and zero self-absorption is highly desirable due to its enormous potential for applications in solid light emitting, and active optical waveguides. However, it is still challenging and rarely reported. Herein, a series of (TMS)2SbCl5 (TMS=triphenylsulfonium cation) crystals have been prepared with diverse [SbCl5]2- configurations and distinctive emission color. Among them, cubic-phase (TMS)2SbCl5 shows bright red emission with a large Stokes shift of 312 nm. In contrast, monoclinic and orthorhombic (TMS)2SbCl5 crystals deliver efficient yellow and orange emission, respectively. Comprehensive structural investigations reveal that larger Stokes shift and longer-wavelength emission of cubic (TMS)2SbCl5 can be attributed to the larger lattice volume and longer Sb⋅⋅⋅Sb distance, which favor sufficient structural aberration freedom at excited states. Together with robust stability, (TMS)2SbCl5 crystal family has been applied as optical waveguide with ultralow loss coefficient of 3.67 ⋅ 10-4 dB μm-1, and shows superior performance in white-light emission and anti-counterfeiting. In short, our study provides a novel and fundamental perspective to structure-property-application relationship of antimony hybrid halides, which will contribute to future rational design of high-performance emissive metal halides.

Mn(II)-Based Metal Halide with Near-Unity Quantum Yield for White LEDs and High-Resolution X-ray Imaging

Metal halides have drawn great interest as luminescent materials and scintillators due to their outstanding optical properties. Exploring new types of phosphors with easy production processes, excellent photophysical properties, high light yields, and environmentally friendly compositions is crucial and quite challenging. Herein, a novel Mn(II)-based metal halide (4-BTP)2MnBr4 was produced using a facile solvent evaporation method, which exhibited a strong green emission peaking at 524 nm from the d-d transition of tetrahedral-coordinated Mn2+ ion and a near-unity quantum yield. The prepared white light-emitting diode device has a wide color gamut of 100.7% NTSC with CIE chromaticity coordinates of (0.32, 0.32). In addition, (4-BTP)2MnBr4 demonstrates excellent characteristics in X-ray scintillation, including a high light yield of 98 000 photons/MeV, a sensitive detection limit of 37.4 nGy/s, excellent resistance to radiation damage, and successful demonstration of X-ray imaging with high resolution at 21.3 lp/mm, revealing the potential for application in diagnostic X-ray medical imaging and industry radiation detection.

Broadband Green Luminescence and Phase Transition in Low-Dimensional Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Iodate

Organic-inorganic hybrid iodide systems, which can form highly ordered chromophores and uniformly oriented transition dipole moments, serve as optimal host-guest systems for the fabrication of micrometer-scale optical devices. In particular, those with low-dimensional structures can exhibit strong quantum-limited and highly localized charges, enabling the generation of high exciton energies and stable excitation emission. In this study, we report a novel instance of an organic-inorganic hybrid iodate, (C13H11N2)(IO3), which was synthesized by incorporating the optically active organic compound, 9-aminoacridine. Upon crystallization in the monoclinic space group P21/c, this compound exhibits a direct optical band gap of 2.66 eV. The incorporation of discrete organic units within the low-dimensional structures induces pronounced local charges, culminating in broadband green luminescence with a peak at 540 nm under UV excitation. This corresponds to the CIE coordinates (0.37, 0.56). A potential phase transition was inferred through a comprehensive analysis of the variable temperature structure and emission spectra. Furthermore, first-principles calculations revealed the pivotal role of organic cations in facilitating broadband luminescence.

Structural Phase Transition in 0D (3,5-DMP)2Bi1-xSbxCl5 Metal Halides: Expression of the Lone Pair Effect and Polyhedral Distortion

Low-dimensional Bi/Sb-based organic-inorganic metal halides (OIMHs) have attracted immense attention from the research community because of their structural diversity and efficient luminescence properties. Further understanding of the relationship between the structure and luminescence properties of these materials is of utmost importance for tuning the luminescence properties for various practical applications. Herein, we have synthesized two lead-free Bi/Sb-based novel OIMHs, (3,5-DMP)2BiCl5 and (3,5-DMP)2SbCl5 [(3,5-DMP) = 3,5-dimethylpiperidine], with zero-dimensional (0D) structures and crystallizing in triclinic (P1 ¯ space group) and monoclinic (P21/c space group) crystal systems, respectively. Both the compounds behave as typical semiconductors with indirect optical band gaps of 3.34 and 3.36 eV for pristine Bi and Sb compounds. These compounds exhibit higher environmental and thermal stability at ambient conditions. Gradual substitution of Sb at the Bi site in (3,5-DMP)2Bi1-xSbxCl5 resulted in the introduction of structural strain due to the significant expression of the lone pair effect, thus leading to a structural transition from the triclinic to monoclinic phase. The effect of the structural phase transition on the optical properties is also studied in (3,5-DMP)2Bi1-xSbxCl5. This work may offer new direction and guidance for exploring various 0D hybrid metal halides and tuning the structures for improvement in the luminescence properties.

Boosting Blue Self-Trapped Exciton Emission in All-Inorganic Zero-Dimensional Metal Halide Cs2ZnCl4 via Zirconium (IV) Doping

Low-dimensional metal halides with efficient luminescence properties have received widespread attention recently. However, nontoxic and stable low-dimensional metal halides with efficient blue emission are rarely reported. We used a solvothermal synthesis method to synthesize tetravalent zirconium ion-doped all-inorganic zero-dimensional Cs2ZnCl4 for the first time. Bright blue emission in the range of 370 nm-700 nm with a emission maximum at 456 nm was observed in Zr4+:Cs2ZnCl4 accompanied by a large Stokes shift, which was due to self-trapped excitons (STEs) caused by the lattice vibrations of the twisted structure. Simultaneously, the PLQY of Zr4+:Cs2ZnCl4 achieve an impressive 89.67%, positioning it as a compelling contender for future applications in blue-light technology.

Polymer-Surface-Mediated Mechanochemical Reaction for Rapid and Scalable Manufacture of Perovskite QD Phosphors

Perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have been considered new-generation emitters for lighting and displays due to their high photoluminescence (PL) efficiency, and pure color. However, their commercialization process is currently hindered by the challenge of mass production in a quick and environmentally friendly manner. In this study, a polymer-surface-mediated mechanochemical reaction (PMR) is proposed to prepare perovskite QDs using a high-speed multifunction grinder for the first time. PMR possesses two distinctive features: i) The ultra-high rotating speed (>15 000 rpm) of the grinder facilitates the rapid conversion of the precursor to perovskite; ii) The surface-rich polymer particulate ensures QDs with high dispersity, avoiding QD aggregation-induced PL quenching. Therefore, PMR can successfully manufacture green perovskite QDs with a high PL quantum yield (PLQY) exceeding 90% in a highly material- (100% yield), time- (1 kg min-1), and effort- (solvent-free) efficient manner. Moreover, the PMR demonstrates remarkable versatility, including synthesizing by various polymers and producing diverse colored and Pb-free phosphors. Importantly, these phosphors featuring a combination of polymer and perovskite, are facilely processed into various solid emitters. The proposed rapid, green, and scalable approach has great potential to accelerate the commercialization of perovskite QDs.

Dimensionality Engineering of Organic-Inorganic Halide Perovskites for Next-Generation X-Ray Detector

The next-generation X-ray detectors require novel semiconductors with low material/fabrication cost, excellent X-ray response characteristics, and robust operational stability. The family of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHPs) materials comprises a range of crystal configuration (i.e., films, wafers, and single crystals) with tunable chemical composition, structures, and electronic properties, which can perfectly meet the multiple-stringent requirements of high-energy radiation detection, making them emerging as the cutting-edge candidate for next-generation X-ray detectors. From the perspective of molecular dimensionality, the physicochemical and optoelectronic characteristics of OIHPs exhibit dimensionality-dependent behavior, and thus the structural dimensionality is recognized as the key factor that determines the device performance of OIHPs-based X-ray detectors. Nevertheless, the correlation between dimensionality of OIHPs and performance of their X-ray detectors is still short of theoretical guidance, which become a bottleneck that impedes the development of efficient X-ray detectors. In the review, the advanced studies on the dimensionality engineering of OIHPs are critically assessed in X-ray detection application, discussing the current understanding on the "dimensionality-property" relationship of OIHPs and the state-of-the-art progresses on the dimensionality-engineered OIHPs-based X-ray detector, and highlight the open challenges and future outlook of this field.

Synthesis of Size-Adjustable CsPbBr3 Perovskite Quantum Dots for Potential Photoelectric Catalysis Applications

As a direct band gap semiconductor, perovskite has the advantages of high carrier mobility, long charge diffusion distance, high defect tolerance and low-cost solution preparation technology. Compared with traditional metal halide perovskites, which regulate energy band and luminescence by changing halogen, perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have a surface effect and quantum confinement effect. Based on the LaMer nucleation growth theory, we have synthesized CsPbBr3 QDs with high dimensional homogeneity by creating an environment rich in Br- ions based on the general thermal injection method. Moreover, the size of the quantum dots can be adjusted by simply changing the reaction temperature and the concentration of Br- ions in the system, and the blue emission of strongly confined pure CsPbBr3 perovskite is realized. Finally, optical and electrochemical tests suggested that the synthesized quantum dots have the potential to be used in the field of photocatalysis.

Transient Photoinduced Pb2+ Disproportionation for Exciton Self-Trapping and Broadband Emission in Low-Dimensional Lead Halide Perovskites

Low-dimensional lead halide perovskites with broadband emission hold great promise for single-component white-light-emitting (WLE) devices. The origin of their broadband emission has been commonly attributed to self-trapped excitons (STEs) composed of localized electronic polarization with a distorted lattice. Unfortunately, the exact electronic and structural nature of the STE species in these WLE materials remains elusive, hindering the rational design of high-efficiency WLE materials. In this study, by combining ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy and ab initio calculations, we uncover surprisingly similar STE features in two prototypical low dimensional WLE perovskite single crystals: 1D (DMEDA)PbBr4 and 2D (EDBE)PbBr4, despite of their different dimensionalities. Photoexcited excitons rapidly localize to intrinsic STEs within ∼250 fs, contributing to the white light emission. Crucially, STEs in both systems exhibit characteristic absorption features akin to those of Pb+ and Pb3+. Further atomic level theoretical simulations confirm photoexcited electrons and holes are localized on the Pb2+ site to form Pb+- and Pb3+-like species, resembling transient photoinduced Pb2+ disproportionation. This study provides conclusive evidence on the key excited state species for exciton self-trapping and broadband emission in low dimensional lead halide WLE perovskites and paves the way for the rational design of high-efficiency WLE materials.

Crystal Structure and Optical Properties Characterization in Quasi-0D Lead-Free Bromide Crystals (C6H14N)3Bi2Br9·H2O and (C6H14N)3Sb3Br12

Low dimensional organic inorganic metal halide materials have shown broadband emission and large Stokes shift, making them widely used in various fields and a promising candidate material. Here, the zero-dimensional lead-free bromide single crystals (C6H14N)3Bi2Br9·H2O (1) and (C6H14N)3Sb3Br12 (2) were synthesized. They crystallized in the monoclinic crystal system with the space group of P21 and P21/n, respectively. Through ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared (UV-vis-NIR) absorption analysis, the band gaps of (C6H14N)3Bi2Br9·H2O and (C6H14N)3Sb3Br12 are found to be 2.75 and 2.83 eV, respectively. Upon photoexcitation, (C6H14N)3Bi2Br9·H2O exhibit broad-band red emission peaking at 640 nm with a large Stokes shift of 180 nm and a lifetime of 2.94 ns, and the emission spectrum of (C6H14N)3Sb3Br12 are similar to those of (C6H14N)3Bi2Br9·H2O. This exclusive red emission is ascribed to the self-trapping exciton transition caused by lattice distortion, which is confirmed through both experiments and first-principles calculations. In addition, due to the polar space group structure and the large spin-orbit coupling (SOC) associated with the heavy elements of Bi and Br of crystal 1, an obvious Rashba effect was observed. The discovery of organic inorganic metal bromide material provides a critical foundation for uncovering the connection between 0D metal halide materials' structures and properties.

Zero-dimensional hybrid tin halides with stable broadband light emissions

Considering the instability and toxicity of 3D Pb-based perovskite nanocrystals, lead-free low-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides have attracted widespread attention as potential substitutes. Herein, two new tin-based 0D halides [H4BAPP]SnBr5·Br and [H4BAPP]SnCl5·Cl·H2O (BAPP = 1,4-bis(3-aminopropyl)piperazine) were synthesized successfully based on [SnX5]3- as an emission center. Typically, [H4BAPP]SnBr5·Br and [H4BAPP]SnCl5·Cl·H2O display broadband yellow and yellow-green light emissions originating from the radiative recombination of self-trapped excitons (STEs). The photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of the two compounds were calculated to be 19.27% and 2.36%, respectively. Furthermore, the excellent chemical and thermal stability and broadband light emissions reveal their potential application in solid-state white lighting diodes.

Temperature-controlled tunable emission of Bi3+-doped Rb2SnCl6 all-inorganic vacancy ordered lead-free perovskite for advanced anticounterfeiting

At present, tuning the luminescence characteristics of phosphors by external physical stimuli such as temperature and pressure has attracted the interest of researchers. However, the emission-tunable luminescence processes by temperature or pressure in lead-free perovskite with ordered vacancy materials have not been systematically studied. In this study, Bi3+-doped Rb2SnCl6 crystals were successfully synthesized using a simple precipitation method, and these crystals demonstrated a remarkable enhancement of luminescence intensity compared with the unannealed ones at 140-200 °C, and with a red-shift in the emission peak from 450 to 500 nm. It was found that the annealing treatment increased the Bi-Cl bond length leading to emission red-shift and achieved the change in the emission intensity due to the band gap modulation of the material. Furthermore, a candidate material for the color-changing optical security strategies was obtained by combining the Bi3+-doped Rb2SnCl6 phosphor and printing ink. This work is a valuable reference for the rational design of luminescent perovskites with promising new functionalities and stimulates the great potential of luminescent perovskites in developing promising phosphors for advanced anticounterfeiting.

Investigating the Structure-property Relationships of Two Cd-based Hybrid Multifunctional Compounds with High Tc, Bright Fluorescence and Wide Band-gap

Organic-inorganic hybrid multifunctional materials have shown significant application in lighting and sensor fields, owing to their prominent performance and diversity structures. Herein, we synthesized two multifunctional compounds: (propyl-quinuclidone)2 CdBr4 (1) and (F-butyl-quinuclidone)2 CdBr4 (2). By introducing light-emitting organic cation with flexible long chain, 1 and 2 exhibit excellent transition properties and bright blue-white fluorescence. Then, combine fluorescence lifetime and first-principal calculation, providing evidence for the electron transfer emission. Subsequently, investigated the impact of substituent carbon chain length (methyl to butyl), structural rigidity (C-C to C-F) and halide framework (Cl to I) on the fluorescence properties. Results indicate that Cd⋅⋅⋅Cd distance and structural rigidity play an important role in fluorescence. Overall, our research provides valuable insight and example for chemical modifications enhance compound performance.

Full-Spectrum White-Light Emission from Triple Self-Trapped Excitons in Hybrid Mixed-Metal Halides

Low-dimensional metal halides with broadband emissions are expected to serve as downconversion luminescent materials for solid-state lighting (SSL). However, efficiently generating full-spectrum white-light emission with a high color-rendering index (CRI) in single-phase emitters remains a challenge. Here, we report a novel zero-dimensional (0D) hybrid mixed-metal halide (TPA)2CuAgI4 (TPA = tetrapropylammonium), in which individual [CuAgI4]2- dimers are completely isolated and surrounded by the organic cations TPA+. Cu+ and Ag+ share the same crystallographic site in [CuAgI4]2- dimers with the same statistical probability. Upon photoexcitation, single crystals exhibit a full-spectrum white-light emission with a full width at half-maximum (fwhm) of up to 314 nm and a high quantum efficiency of 46.8%. Detailed photophysical studies and theoretical calculations reveal that the ultra-broadband emission of (TPA)2CuAgI4 originates from the radiative recombination of red-, green-, and blue-emitting self-trapped excitons in [CuAgI4]2- dimers. In addition, (TPA)2CuAgI4 nanocrystals were successfully synthesized and exhibited optical properties similar to those of single-crystal counterparts. Finally, a prototype ultraviolet (UV)-pumped white-light-emitting diode (WLED) and a composite thin film employing this new white-light emitter produces a well-distributed full-spectrum white light with a high CRI of 91.4 and a warm correlated color temperature (CCT) of 4135 K, indicating the potential application of this white-light emitter in SSL. These results provide a new perspective for designing superior single-phase white-light emitters.

Mapping Uncharted Lead-Free Halide Perovskites and Related Low-Dimensional Structures

Research on perovskites has grown exponentially in the past decade due to the potential of methyl ammonium lead iodide in photovoltaics. Although these devices have achieved remarkable and competitive power conversion efficiency, concerns have been raised regarding the toxicity of lead and its impact on scaling up the technology. Eliminating lead while conserving the performance of photovoltaic devices is a great challenge. To achieve this goal, the research has been expanded to thousands of compounds with similar or loosely related crystal structures and compositions. Some materials are "re-discovered", and some are yet unexplored, but predictions suggest that their potential applications may go beyond photovoltaics, for example, spintronics, photodetection, photocatalysis, and many other areas. This short review aims to present the classification, some current mapping strategies, and advances of lead-free halide double perovskites, their derivatives, lead-free perovskitoid, and low-dimensional related crystals.

Temperature-Induced Reversible Photoluminescence Switching and Ultraviolet-Pumped Light-Emitting Diode Applications of a Perovskite (C6H10N2)2MnCl6·2H2O Crystal

Zero-dimensional (0D) organic-inorganic hybrid halides present many fascinating photophysical properties for promising optoelectronic applications such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs), X-ray imaging, photodetectors, and anticounterfeiting. Herein, a centimeter-sized single crystal (C6H10N2)2MnCl6·2H2O with a 0D perovskite structure was obtained via a solvent evaporation method. A bright red emission at 618 nm with a larger Stokes shift of more than 300 nm and a long fluorescence lifetime of 6.21 ms were measured. Notably, a reversible PL switching from red emission to nonluminescence has been presented in the cycles of heating-cooling processes from RT to 100 °C. Furthermore, the temperature-induced luminescence shows a quick recovery after 20 conversion cycles, exhibiting excellent stability and temperature sensing. According to the structural and theoretical analyses, the temperature-induced luminescence is primarily due to hydrogen-bonding interactions between (MnCl6)4- and H2O molecules. Particularly, a temperature anticounterfeiting application has been designed based on its reversible temperature-dependent PL switching. Importantly, the ultraviolet-pumped LEDs fabricated by (C6H10N2)2MnCl6·2H2O single crystals are perfectly achieved. Anyway, this work clearly demonstrates that 0D Mn-based perovskite with temperature-dependent PL switching greatly extends its potential applications in electro-optical display, temperature sensing, and anticounterfeiting devices.

Supramolecular assembly of blue and green halide perovskites with near-unity photoluminescence

The metal-halide ionic octahedron is the optoelectronic unit for halide perovskites, and a crown ether-assisted supramolecular assembly approach can pack various ionic octahedra into tunable symmetries. In this work, we demonstrate near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) blue and green emission with the supramolecular assembly of hafnium (Hf) and zirconium (Zr) halide octahedral clusters. (18C6@K)2HfBr6 powders showed blue emission with a near-unity PLQY (96.2%), and green emission was also achieved with (18C6@K)2ZrCl4Br2 powders at a PLQY of 82.7%. These highly emissive powders feature facile low-temperature solution-based synthesis conditions and maintain high PLQY in solution-processable semiconductor inks under ambient conditions, and they were used in thin-film displays and emissive three-dimensional-printed architectures that exhibited high spatial resolution.

Photoluminescence and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Two Terpyridine-Based Hybrid Zn/Cd Halides

Hybrid metal halides (HMHs) with low-dimensional structures have attracted increasing attention due to their striking optical properties. Herein, two new zero-dimensional HMHs have been fabricated by CdCl2/ZnCl2 and 4'-(4-pyridyl-phenyl)-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (Tpy), including (TpyH3)[CdCl4][Cl] (Tpy-Cd) and (TpyH3)[ZnCl4][Cl] (Tpy-Zn). Their structures are consisted of a [TpyH3]3+ organic cation, an inorganic [ZnCl4] or [CdCl4] tetrahedron, and one isolated Cl- anion. Tpy-Cd crystallizes to a noncentrosymmetric structure and possesses a moderate second harmonic response of 0.72 × KH2PO4, while Tpy-Zn features a centrosymmetric space group. Though Tpy-Cd and Tpy-Zn crystallize into space groups of completely different symmetry due to distinct connection mode and molecular distortion, they display quite similar photoluminescence of bright green light emission under ultraviolet excitation, nearly identical in Stokes shift, photoluminescence quantum yield, decay lifetime, and energy. The photoluminescence quantum yields of green light emission were measured to be nearly 25%, outperforming most of the Cd/Zn low-dimensional HMHs.

Zero-Dimensional Hybrid Antimony Chloride with Near-Unity Broad-Band Orange-Red Emission toward Solid-State Lighting

Zero-dimensional (0D) hybrid metal halides are attractive owing to their distinctive structure as well as photoluminescence (PL) characteristics. To discover 0D hybrid metal halides with high photoluminescence quantum yield and good stability is of great significance for white light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Herein, a novel hybrid antimony chloride (CTP)2SbCl5 is synthesized, which shows a bright broad-band orange-red emission peaking at 620 nm under the low energy excitation (365 nm), achieving an excellent photoluminescence quantum yield of 96.8%. In addition, (CTP)2SbCl5 shows an additional emission peaking at 470 nm when excited at high energy (323 nm). PL spectra and density functional theory results demonstrate that the observed dual-band emission originates from the singlet and triplet self-trapped excitons confined in isolated [SbCl5]2- square pyramids. Moreover, (CTP)2SbCl5 presents relatively superior air stability, and the PL intensity still maintains 78% of the initial PL intensity when exposed to the air for above 2 weeks. Benefiting from high-efficiency PL emission and good stability of (CTP)2SbCl5, a stable warm white LED device with a 92.3% color rendering index was prepared by coating blue phosphor BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+, green (Sr,Ba)2SiO4:Eu2+, and orange-red (CTP)2SbCl5 on a 365 nm LED chip. This work provides an efficient luminescent material and also demonstrates the potential application of 0D hybrid antimony chloride in solid-state lighting.

Tellurium-Doped 0D Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Lead-Free Perovskite for X-ray Imaging

The application of X-ray imaging in military, industrial flaw detection, and medical examination is inseparable from the wide application of scintillator materials. In order to substitute for lead, lower costs, and reduce self-absorption, organic-inorganic hybrid lead-free perovskite scintillators are emerging as a new option. In this work, novel (TEA)2Zr1-xTexCl6 perovskite microcrystals (MCs) were successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method, with Te4+ doping, which leads to yellow triplet-state self-trapped excitons emission. The emission peak of (TEA)2Zr1-xTexCl6 located at 605 nm under X-ray excitation, which was applied to X-ray imaging, shows a clear wiring structure inside the USB connector. The detection limit (DL) of 820 nGyair/s for (TEA)2Zr0.9Te0.1Cl6 is well below the dose rate corresponding to a standard medical X-ray diagnosis is 5.5 μGyair/s. This work opens up a new path for organic-inorganic hybrid lead-free scintillators.

Recent advances in the design of afterglow materials: mechanisms, structural regulation strategies and applications

Afterglow materials are attracting widespread attention owing to their distinctive and long-lived optical emission properties which create exciting opportunities in various fields. Recent research has led to the discovery of many new afterglow materials featuring high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) and lifetimes of up to several hours under ambient conditions. Afterglow materials are typically categorized according to their luminescence mechanism, such as long-persistent luminescence (LPL), room temperature phosphorescence (RTP), or thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Through rational design and novel synthetic strategies to modulate spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and populate triplet exciton states (T1), luminophores with long lifetimes and bright afterglow characteristics can be realized. Initial research towards afterglow materials focused mainly on pure inorganic materials, many of which possessed inherent disadvantages such as metal toxicity or low energy emissions. In recent years, organic-inorganic hybrid afterglow materials (OIHAMs) have been developed with high PLQY and long lifetimes. These hybrid materials exploit the tunable structure and easy processing of organic molecules, as well as enhanced SOC and intersystem crossing (ISC) processes involving heavy atom dopants, to achieve excellent afterglow performance. In this review, we begin by briefly discussing the structure and composition of inorganic and organic-inorganic hybrid afterglow materials, including strategies for regulating their lifetime, PLQY and luminescence wavelength. The specific advantages of organic-inorganic hybrid afterglow materials, including low manufacturing costs, diverse molecular/electronic structures, tunable structures and optical properties, and compatibility with a variety of substrates, are emphasized. Subsequently, we discuss in detail the fundamental mechanisms used by afterglow materials, their classification, design principles, and end applications (including sensing, anticounterfeiting, and photoelectric devices, among others). Finally, existing challenges and promising future directions are discussed, laying a platform for the design of afterglow materials for specific applications.

The Scale Effects of Organometal Halide Perovskites

Organometal halide perovskites have achieved great success in solution-processed photovoltaics. The explorations quickly expanded into other optoelectronic applications, including light-emitting diodes, lasers, and photodetectors. An in-depth analysis of the special scale effects is essential to understand the working mechanisms of devices and optimize the materials towards an enhanced performance. Generally speaking, organometal halide perovskites can be classified in two ways. By controlling the morphological dimensionality, 2D perovskite nanoplatelets, 1D perovskite nanowires, and 0D perovskite quantum dots have been studied. Using appropriate organic and inorganic components, low-dimensional organic-inorganic metal halide hybrids with 2D, quasi-2D, 1D, and 0D structures at the molecular level have been developed and studied. This provides opportunities to investigate the scale-dependent properties. Here, we present the progress on the characteristics of scale effects in organometal halide perovskites in these two classifications, with a focus on carrier diffusion, excitonic features, and defect properties.

Manipulating Lone-Pair-Driven Luminescence in 0D Tin Halides by Pressure-Tuned Stereochemical Activity from Static to Dynamic

The excellent luminescence properties and structural dynamics driven by the stereoactivity of the lone pair in a variety of low-dimensional ns2 metal halides have attracted growing investigations for optoelectronic applications. However, the structural and photophysical aspects of the excited state associated with the lone pair expression are currently open questions. Herein, zero-dimensional Sn-based halides with static stereoactive 5 s2 lone pairs are selected as a model system to understand the correlations between the distinctive lone pair expression and the excited-state structural relaxation and charge carrier dynamics by continuous lattice manipulation. Lattice compression drives 5 s2 lone pair active switching and self-trapped exciton (STE) redistribution by suppressing excited-state structural deformation of the isolated SnBr4 2- units. Our results demonstrate that the static expression of the 5 s2 lone pair results in a red broadband triplet STE emission with a large Stokes shift, while its dynamic expression creates a sky-blue narrowband emission dominated by the radiative recombination of singlet STEs. Our findings and the photophysical mechanism proposed highlight the stereochemical effects of lone pair expression in controlling light emission properties and offer constructive guidelines for tuning the optoelectronic properties in diverse ns2 metal halides.

Ultralow-loss Optical Waveguides through Balancing Deep-Blue TADF and Orange Room Temperature Phosphorescence in Hybrid Antimony Halide Microstructures

Harnessing the potential of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is crucial for developing light-emitting diodes (LEDs), lasers, sensors, and many others. However, effective strategies in this domain are still relatively scarce. This study presents a new approach to achieving highly efficient deep-blue TADF (with a PLQY of 25 %) and low-energy orange RTP (with a PLQY of 90 %) through the fabrication of lead-free hybrid halides. This new class of monomeric and dimeric 0D antimony halides can be facilely synthesized using a bottom-up solution process, requiring only a few seconds to minutes, which offer exceptional stability and nontoxicity. By leveraging the highly adaptable molecular arrangement and crystal packing modes, the hybrid antimony halides demonstrate the ability to self-assemble into regular 1D microrod and 2D microplate morphologies. This self-assembly is facilitated by multiple non-covalent interactions between the inorganic cores and organic shells. Notably, these microstructures exhibit outstanding polarized luminescence and function as low-dimensional optical waveguides with remarkably low optical-loss coefficients. Therefore, this work not only presents a pioneering demonstration of deep-blue TADF in hybrid antimony halides, but also introduces 1D and 2D micro/nanostructures that hold promising potential for applications in white LEDs and low-dimensional photonic systems.

Perovskite Scintillators for Improved X-ray Detection and Imaging

Halide perovskites (HPs) recently have emerged as one class of competitive scintillators for X-ray detection and imaging owing to its high quantum efficiency, short decay time, superior X-ray absorption capacity, low cost, and ease of crystal growth. The tunable structure and versatile chemical compositions of halide perovskites provide distinguishable advantages over traditional inorganic scintillators for optimizing scintillation performance. Since the first observation of the scintillation phenomenon in HPs, substantial efforts have been devoted to expanding the inventory of HP scintillators and regulating material properties. Understanding the relationship between the structure and scintillation properties of HP scintillators is essential for developing materials with improved X-ray detection and imaging capacities. This review summarizes strategies for improving the light yield of HP scintillators and provides a roadmap for improving the X-ray imaging performance. Additionally, methods for controlling the light propagation direction in HP scintillators are highlighted for improving X-ray imaging resolution. Finally, we highlight the current challenge in HP scintillators and provide a perspective on the future development of this emerging scintillator.

Anomalous Charge Transfer from Organic Ligands to Metal Halides in Zero-Dimensional [(C6 H5 )4 P]2 SbCl5 Enabled by Pressure-Induced Lone Pair-π Interaction

Low-dimensional (low-D) organic metal halide hybrids (OMHHs) have emerged as fascinating candidates for optoelectronics due to their integrated properties from both organic and inorganic components. However, for most of low-D OMHHs, especially the zero-D (0D) compounds, the inferior electronic coupling between organic ligands and inorganic metal halides prevents efficient charge transfer at the hybrid interfaces and thus limits their further tunability of optical and electronic properties. Here, using pressure to regulate the interfacial interactions, efficient charge transfer from organic ligands to metal halides is achieved, which leads to a near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) at around 6.0 GPa in a 0D OMHH, [(C6 H5 )4 P]2 SbCl5 . In situ experimental characterizations and theoretical simulations reveal that the pressure-induced electronic coupling between the lone-pair electrons of Sb3+ and the π electrons of benzene ring (lp-π interaction) serves as an unexpected "bridge" for the charge transfer. Our work opens a versatile strategy for the new materials design by manipulating the lp-π interactions in organic-inorganic hybrid systems.

Multi-Mode Photoluminescence Regulation in a Zero-Dimensional Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Metal Halide Perovskite─[(CH3)4N]2SnCl6

Metal ion-doped zero-dimensional halide perovskites provide good platforms to generate broadband emission and explore the fundamental dynamics of emission regulations. Recently, Sb3+-doped zero-dimensional halide perovskites have attracted considerable attention for the high quantum yield of yellow emission; however, the triplet state recombination is activated and the singlet state emission is usually absent. Herein, we fabricate an Sb3+-doped zero-dimensional [(CH3)4N]2SnCl6 perovskite that can induce singlet and triplet emission. Density functional theory calculation shows that there are some overlaps between the highest occupied molecular orbitals and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals, which may induce a large energy separation between the lowest excited triplet states (T1) and the lowest excited singlet states (S1) [ΔE(S1 - T1)], impeding all the carriers' transfer from the singlet state to the triplet state. As a result, the reserved singlet emission together with the triplet emission can be regulated by excitation wavelength in situ. In addition, different Bi3+ ratios are co-doped into Sb3+@[(CH3)4N]2SnCl6, resulting in a photoluminescence ex situ regulation. Single-phase white light LED and optical anti-counterfeiting are developed further.

Highly efficient and stable lead-free cesium copper halide perovskites for optoelectronic applications: A DFT based study

Recently synthesized industrially significant perovskites C s 3 C u 2 X 5 (X = C l , B r , I ) are subjected to a density functional theory (DFT) investigation utilizing the CASTEP code. This study explores various physical features, including structural, optical, thermodynamic, elastic, mechanical, and electronic properties. There is a strong correlation between the optimized structure parameters and the existing experimental data, which demonstrates the reliability of our DFT-based computations. The band structure and density of states (TDOS and PDOS) analysis revealed that all the studied perovskites are direct band gap semiconductors, and C s 3 C u 2 B r 5 has the smallest band gap (2.092 eV). We also discussed the mechanical and cell stability using the Born stability criterion and formation energy, respectively. The mechanical and dynamic stability of each phase is confirmed by the analysis of the elastic constants. According to the computed values of Pugh's and Poisson's ratios as well as Cauchy's pressure, all of the studied compounds are ductile in nature. The study of density of states, total charge density, and Mulliken atomic populations reveal that all the compounds have complex bonding with both ionic and covalent properties. Finally, utilizing the elastic constant data, the Debye temperatures of C s 3 C u 2 C l 5 , C s 3 C u 2 B r 5 , and C s 3 C u 2 I 5 have been determined as 82.90 K, 100.00 K, and 80.70 K, respectively. The analysis of thermodynamics (relatively low values of both Θ D and K min ) as well as optical properties indicate that all the investigated materials have the potential to serve as thermal barrier coating (TBC) materials.

Excellent Switchable Properties, Broad-Band Emission, Ferroelectricity, and High Tc in a Two-Dimensional Hybrid Perovskite: (4,4-DCA)2PbBr4 Exploited by H/F Substitution

Switchable materials have gained significant attention due to their potential applications in data storage, sensors, and switching devices. Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid perovskites have demonstrated promising prospects for designing switchable materials, where the dynamic motion of the organic components coupled with the distortion of the inorganic framework provides the driving force for triggering multifunctional switchable properties. Herein, through the H/F substitution strategy, we report a polar 2D hybrid lead-based perovskite, (4,4-DCA)₂PbBr₄ (4,4-DCA = 4,4-difluorocyclohexylammonium) (1), which exhibits dual-stable behavior in a dielectric and second harmonic generation (SHG) response during the reversible phase transition process near the high Curie temperature T_c ∼ 409 K. The phase transition temperature is significantly increased by 41 K compared to the corresponding non-fluorinated (CHA)₂PbBr₄ (CHA = cyclohexylammonium). Remarkably, the material shows rare broad-band yellow emission under UV excitation, attributed to the induction of self-trapped exciton emission by the distortion of the [PbBr_6]^4- octahedra, as confirmed by the first-principles analysis. 1 also exhibited ferroelectricity with a saturation polarization value and a small coercive field. This study provides a new insight into the modification of multifunctional switchable materials through the H/F substitution strategy.

Stable Sn-Based Hybrid Perovskite-Related Structures with Tunable Color Coordinates via Organic Cations in Low-Temperature Synthesis

Organic-inorganic Pb-free layered perovskites are efficient broadband emitters and thus are promising materials for lighting applications. However, their synthetic protocols require a controlled atmosphere, high temperature, and long preparation time. This hinders the potential tunability of their emission through organic cations, as is instead common practice in Pb-based structures. Here, we present a set of Sn-Br layered perovskite-related structures that display different chromaticity coordinates and photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) up to 80%, depending on the choice of the organic monocation. We first develop a synthetic protocol that is performed under air and at 4 °C, requiring only a few steps. X-ray and 3D electron diffraction analyses show that the structures exhibit diverse octahedra connectivity (disconnected and face-sharing) and thus optical properties, while preserving the organic-inorganic layer intercalation. These results provide key insight into a previously underexplored strategy to tune the color coordinates of Pb-free layered perovskites through organic cations with complex molecular configurations.

Organic Covalent Interaction-based Frameworks as Emerging Catalysts for Environment and Energy Applications: Current Scenario and Opportunities

The term "covalent organic framework" (COF) refers to a class of porous organic polymeric materials made from organic building blocks that have been covalently bonded. The preplanned and predetermined bonding of the monomer linkers allow them to demonstrate directional flexibility in two- or three-dimensional spaces. COFs are modern materials, and the discovery of new synthesis and linking techniques has made it possible to prepare them with a variety of favorable features and use them in a range of applications. Additionally, they can be post-synthetically altered or transformed into other materials of particular interest to produce compounds with enhanced chemical and physical properties. Because of its tunability in different chemical and physical states, post-synthetic modifications, high stability, functionality, high porosity and ordered geometry, COFs are regarded as one of the most promising materials for catalysis and environmental applications. This study highlights the basic advancements in establishing the stable COFs structures and various post-synthetic modification approaches. Further, the photocatalytic applications, such as organic transformations, degradation of emerging pollutants and removal of heavy metals, production of hydrogen and Conversion of carbon dioxide (CO₂ ) to useful products have also been presented. Finally, the future research directions and probable outcomes have also been summarized, by focusing their promises for specialists in a variety of research fields.

Circularly Polarized Luminescence in Zero-Dimensional Antimony Halides: Structural Distortion Controlled Luminescence Thermometer

Materials emitting circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) have been intensively studied for their promising applications in various fields. However, developing tunable and responsive CPL materials in a wide wavelength range remains a great challenge. Here, a pair of chiral (R,R/S,S-DCDA)₃Sb₂Cl₁₂ (DCDA = dimethyl-1,2-cyclohexanediamine divalent cation) shows efficient broadband yellow emission with a photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield of 27.6% with a CPL asymmetry factor of 3 × 10^-3. The associated chiroptical activity is attributed to the efficient chiral transfer as well as the self-trapped exciton emission originating from the large distortion of the inorganic blocks. Notably, (R,R/S,S-DCDA)₃Sb₂Cl₁₂ exhibits a large red-shift emission exceeding 100 nm upon lowering temperature. An excellent linear correlation of the PL wavelength on temperature indicates that the compounds can be used as PL thermometers, which originates from a temperature-dependent linear structural distortion of the [SbCl₆] emitter. This work inspires the potential utilization of CPL-emitting materials as responsive light sources.

Linear optical afterglow and nonlinear optical harmonic generation from chiral tin(IV) halides: the role of lattice distortions

The striking chemical variability of hybrid organic-inorganic metal halides (HOMHs) endows them with fascinating optoelectronic properties. The inorganic skeletons of HOMHs are often flexible and their lattice deformations could serve as an effective factor for enabling the functionalities of HOMHs. Here, the linear and nonlinear optical properties of zero-dimensional (0D) tin(IV) halides have been tuned by structural distortion facilitated by the chiral amines. Enantiopure α-methylbenzyl ammoniums (XMBA, X = Cl, F) effectively transfer their chirality to the inorganic scaffolds when forming the tin(IV) halides, which enables polar arrangements in their crystals and leads to outstanding second-order nonlinear optical performances. In contrast, the racemic mixture of R- and S-FMBA results in the formation of HOMHs with room temperature phosphorescence. The lower lattice deformation in (rac-FMBA)₂SnCl₆ restrains the non-radiative decay from electron-phonon coupling and facilitates the photoluminescence. Meanwhile, the marked π-π interaction stabilizes the T₁ state for phosphorescent emission. These distinct linear and nonlinear optical properties denote the important role that the lattice distortion plays in tuning the optical properties of low-dimensional HOMHs, and offer a promising perspective of 0D tin(IV) halides for applications in optoelectronic materials and devices.

Achieving Near-unity Photoluminescence Quantum Yields in Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Antimony (III) Chlorides with the [SbCl5 ] Geometry

Hybrid organic-inorganic antimony halides have attracted increasing attention due to the non-toxicity, stability, and high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). To shed light on the structural factors that contribute to the high PLQY, five pairs of antimony halides with general formula A₂ SbCl₅ and A₂ Sb₂ Cl₈ are synthesized via two distinct methods and characterized. The A₂ SbCl₅ type adopts square pyramidal [SbCl₅ ] geometry with near-unity PLQY, while the A₂ Sb₂ Cl₈ adopts seesaw dimmer [Sb₂ Cl₈ ] geometry with PLQY≈0 %. Through combined data analysis with the literature, we have found that A₂ SbCl₅ series with square pyramidal geometry generally has much longer Sb⋅⋅⋅Sb distances, leading to more expressed lone pairs of Sb^III . Additional factors including Sb-Cl distance and stability of antimony chlorides may also affect PLQY. Our targeted synthesis and correlated insights provide efficient tools to precisely form highly emissive materials for optoelectronic applications.

Solution-Processable Copper Halide Based Hybrid Materials Consisting of Cationic Ligands with Different Coordination Modes

Using cationic ligands containing both aromatic and aliphatic coordination sites, we have synthesized and structurally characterized five new CuX-based hybrid materials consisting of anionic inorganic motifs that also form coordinate bonds with the cationic organic ligands. As a result of the unique bonding nature at the inorganic/organic interfaces, these compounds demonstrate strong resistance toward heat and can be readily processed in solution. They emit light in the visible region ranging from cyan to yellow color, with the highest photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) reaching 71%. The influence of the different coordination modes of the ligands on their emission behavior was investigated employing both experimental and theoretical methods, which have provided insight in understanding structure-property relationships in these materials and guidelines for tuning and enhancing their chemical and physical properties.

Air stable highly luminescent 2D tin halide perovskite nanocrystals as photodetectors

Hybrid and inorganic perovskite nanocrystals are a hot topic in materials chemistry due to their versatile optoelectronic properties. Herein, we report highly luminescent water stable lead-free orange emissive (OleylAm)₂SnBr₄ (OleylAm = oleylammonium cation) 2D tin halide perovskite nanocrystals in humid conditions in a solution-based process. The photoresponse study performed with the synthesized nanocrystals exhibits a responsivity of 4.9 mA W^-1 at a 5 V operating voltage.

Halide Chemistry in Tin Perovskite Optoelectronics: Bottlenecks and Opportunities

Tin halide perovskites (Sn HaPs) are the top lead-free choice for perovskite optoelectronics, but the oxidation of perovskite Sn²⁺ to Sn⁴⁺ remains a key challenge. However, the role of inconspicuous chemical processes remains underexplored. Specifically, the halide component in Sn HaPs (typically iodide) has been shown to play a key role in dictating device performance and stability due to its high reactivity. Here we describe the impact of native halide chemistry on Sn HaPs. Specifically, molecular halogen formation in Sn HaPs and its influence on degradation is reviewed, emphasising the benefits of iodide substitution for improving stability. Next, the ecological impact of halide products of Sn HaP degradation and its mitigation are considered. The development of visible Sn HaP emitters via halide tuning is also summarised. Lastly, halide defect management and interfacial engineering for Sn HaP devices are discussed. These insights will inspire efficient and robust Sn HaP optoelectronics.

(C5N2H14)GeBr4: A 2D Organic Germanium Bromide Perovskite with Strong Orange Photoluminescence Properties

Hybrid organic-inorganic metal halide (OIMH) perovskites are regarded as potential photoluminescent (PL) materials and have attracted intensive attention. Here, we select 1-methylpiperazine as an organic component and successfully obtain a two-dimensional (2D) Ge-based OIMH perovskite, (1-mpz)GeBr₄. It features a 2D layered structure composed of distorted [GeBr₆]^4- octahedra with organic (C₅H₁₄N₂)²⁺ located between the layers. (1-mpz)GeBr₄ exhibits strong orange color under ultraviolet (UV) light and possesses good PL stability for over 2 months. The photoluminescence quantum efficiency is measured to be 7.15% at room temperature, which is the largest among all reported low-dimensional Ge-based perovskites. Experimental measurements, combined with first-principles calculations, reveal that its PL property is attributed to self-trapped excitons (STEs) from [GeBr₆]^4- groups. From the deduced structure-property relationship, Ge-based OIMH PL perovskites with good stability and high PL efficiency can be expected.

Octahedral Distortion Co-Regulation via Dual Strategies toward Luminescence Enhancement for the MA4InBr7 Perovskite Single Crystal

A series of novel perovskite single crystals are innovatively grown. Aiming to enhance the luminescence performance, octahedral distortion co-regulation via dual strategies for the as-prepared perovskite single crystals is performed. The distortion of the octahedral structure strengthens the electron-phonon coupling and electron localization, resulting in a more stable self-trapped state, which thereby increases the potential for radiative recombination, accompanied by the self-trapped exciton emission. Accordingly, the luminescence spectra of the as-prepared MA₄In_0.975Sb_0.025Br₇ single crystal can cover the 450-800 nm range, and the photoluminescence quantum yield is up to 81.25%.

Achieving Ultrahigh Efficiency Vacancy-Ordered Double Perovskite Microcrystals via Ionic Liquids

Lead-free perovskites have gained much interest for photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications. But instability and low quantum efficiency significantly limit their prospects for future applications. Here, a general route is reported to synthesize highly stable lead-free perovskites on a large scale with remarkably enhanced quantum efficiency. Two typical vacancy-ordered double perovskites (Cs₂ ZrCl₆ and Cs₂ SnCl₆ ) and their corresponding Bi³⁺ or Sb³⁺ doped samples are synthesized in ionic liquids (ILs) solutions via a simple solution method. These prepared perovskite samples all exhibit high-quality crystalline structures and their photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) all show an increase close to 200% compared to the samples prepared in the hydrochloric acid system. The PLQY of Sb-doped Cs₂ ZrCl₆ with excellent thermal stability can reach up to 90.2%, which is the highest value reported for this system (Cs₂ ZrCl₆ :Sb). Density functional theory calculations reveal that the corresponding interaction between the ILs and the samples can effectively improve the crystal quality and reduce energy loss. The potential applications of the prepared samples for high-performance white light-emitting diodes and optical anti-counterfeiting are also demonstrated. The findings provide a straightforward way to obtain ultrahigh quantum efficiency vacancy-ordered double perovskites with good thermal stability and excellent optoelectronic properties.
