Macrocyclic Diacetylene / Sulfonate Fluorophore Hierarchical Multifunctional Nanotoroids

Functional supramolecular materials exhibit important features including structural versatility and versatile applications. Here, this study reports the construction of unique hierarchically organized nanotoroids exhibiting fluorescence, photocatalytic, and sensing properties. The nanotoroids comprise of macrocyclic diacetylenes (MCDA) and 8-anilino-1-naphthalene sulfonate (ANS), a negatively charged aromatic fluorescent dye. This study shows that the hierarchical structure of the nanotoroids consist of MCDA nanofibers formed by stacked diacetylene monomers as the basic units, which are further bent and aligned into toroidal organization by electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions with the ANS molecules. The amine moieties on the nanotoroids surface are employed for deposition of gold nanostructures - Au nanoparticles or Au nanosheets - which constitute effective platforms for photocatalysis and surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based sensing.

Water-Regulated Evolution of Inversion, Reinversion, and Amplification of Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Supramolecular Organogels Based on Glutamide-Cyanostilbene Amphiphile

Water incorporated with supramolecular building blocks in organic solvents can play a key role in the circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) inversion and amplification of supramolecular assemblies. Herein, we demonstrate that fine-tuning the water content regulated the assembly structure evolution and made the circular dichroism and CPL sign of the system undergo intriguing inversion, reinversion, and amplification processes based on a unique and interesting glutamide-cyanostilbene system, as supported by morphology, spectroscopic observations, and time-dependent density functional theory calculation.

Photoisomerization and thermal reconstruction induced supramolecular chirality inversion in nanofiber determined by minority isomer

Here, amphiphile GCH based on glutamide-cyanostilbene is designed and synthesized, it is found that it can assembly in acetonitrile, and shows circular dichroism signals. After Z-E isomerizaition by UV irradiation, the CD signal of the assembly can be inverted. Unexpectedly, after another heating and cooling process, the circular dichroism signals can be totally inverted even though the E-isomers are in minority. Finally, the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations deeply elucidate the supramolecuar chirality inversion mechanism. This work brings some new insights into the control of chirality inversion, which may provide a perspective for the smart chiroptical materials construction.

Enhancement of Circularly Polarized Luminescence from Pulsating Nanotubules

Enhancing the dissymmetry factor (glum ) is a crucial issue in developing circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials. Herein, based on supramolecular self-assembly of diethyl l-glutamate-cyanodiarylethene (L-GC) in mixed solution of EtOH-H2 O with different water fraction, enhanced circularly polarized emission from pulsating nanotubules is realized. In the mixture of ethanol and water (30/70, v/v), L-GC self-assembles into roll-up-type dense nanotubes and shows l-CPL. Remarkably, by increasing the water fraction to 80% and 90%, the diameter of the roll-up nanotubes increases and the dissymmetry factor of the nanotubes is significantly enhanced from 6.9 × 10-3  (dense nanotubes) to 3.7 × 10-2 (loose nanotubes) because of the enhanced intermolecular interactions and more ordered supramolecular stacking when increasing the water fraction. An efficient way is provided here to realize the increase of the dissymmetry factor by only changing the composition of solvents.

Photoresponsive Supramolecular Polymers: From Light-Controlled Small Molecules to Smart Materials

Photoresponsive supramolecular polymers are well-organized assemblies based on highly oriented and reversible noncovalent interactions containing photosensitive molecules as (co-)monomers. They have attracted increasing interest in smart materials and dynamic systems with precisely controllable functions, such as light-driven soft actuators, photoresponsive fluorescent anticounterfeiting and light-triggered electronic devices. The present review discusses light-activated molecules used in photoresponsive supramolecular polymers with their main photo-induced changes, e.g., geometry, dipole moment, and chirality. Based on these distinct changes, supramolecular polymers formed by light-activated molecules exhibit photoresponsive disassembly and reassembly. As a consequence, photo-induced supramolecular polymerization, "depolymerization," and regulation of the lengths and topologies are observed. Moreover, the light-controlled functions of supramolecular polymers, such as actuation, emission, and chirality transfer along length scales, are highlighted. Furthermore, a perspective on challenges and future opportunities is presented. Besides the challenge of moving from harmful UV light to visible/near IR light avoiding fatigue, and enabling biomedical applications, future opportunities include light-controlled supramolecular actuators with helical motion, light-modulated information transmission, optically recyclable materials, and multi-stimuli-responsive supramolecular systems.

Fine-tuning of the size of supramolecular nanotoroids suppresses the subsequent catenation of nano-[2]catenane

The reduction in the inner diameter of the nanotoroids of a π-conjugated barbiturate monomer results in nano-[2]catenanes in a high yield due to enhanced secondary nucleation and subsequent steric suppression of further catenation.

Anion-Driven Circularly Polarized Luminescence Inversion of Unsymmetrical Europium(III) Complexes for Target Identifiable Sensing

Anion-responsive sign inversion of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) was successfully achieved by N3O6-type nona-coordinated europium(III) (Eu3+) complexes [(R)-1 and (S)-1] composed of a less-hindered unsymmetrical N3-tridentate ligand (a chiral bis(oxazoline) ligand) and three O2-chelating (β-diketonate) ligands. Here, (R)-1 exhibited a positive CPL signal (IL - IR > 0) at the 5D0 → 7F1 transition of Eu3+, which can be changed to a negative sign (i.e., IL - IR > 0 → IL - IR < 0) by the coordination of trifluoroacetic anions (CF3COO-) to the Eu3+ center. However, (R)-1 preserved the original positive CPL signal (i.e., IL - IR > 0 → IL - IR > 0) in the presence of a wide range of competing anions (Cl-, Br-, I-, BF4-, ClO4-, ReO4-, PF6-, OTf-, and SbF6-). Thus, (R)-1 acts as a smart target identifiable probe, where the CPL measurement (IL - IR) can distinguish the signals from the competing anions (i.e., IL - IR < 0 vs IL - IR > 0) and eliminate the background emission (i.e., IL - IR = 0) from the background emitter (achiral luminescent compounds). The presented approach is also promising in terms of bio-inspired optical methodology because it enables nature's developed chiral sensitivity to use circularly polarized light for object identification (i.e., IL - IR = 0 vs | IL - IR | > 0).

Diastereoselective self-assembly of a triple-stranded europium helicate with light modulated chiroptical properties

Chiroptical photoswitches are of increasing interest for their potential in advanced information technologies. Herein, an achiral bis-β-diketonate ligand (o-L) with a photoresponsive diarylethene moiety as a linker was designed, which co-assembled with Eu³⁺ ions and R- and S-bis(diphenylphosphoryl)-1,10-binaphthyl (R/S-BINAPO) as chiral ancillaries to form dinuclear triple-stranded helicates, [Eu₂(o-L)₃(R/S-BINAPO)₂]. The helicates in the enantiopure form were confirmed by ¹H, ¹⁹F, ³¹P NMR and DOSY NMR analyses. Furthermore, the mirror-image CD and CPL spectra also demonstrate the existence of stable ground- and excited-state chiralities in solution. When exposed to alternate ultraviolet and visible light, the helicates showed reversible color variations from colorless to purple, followed by the presence of light-triggered quadruple optical and chiroptical outputs, named CD, PL, CPL and g_lum switches. With these light-modulated optical outputs, the possibility for the fabrication of IMPLICATION and INHIBIT logic gates was discussed.

Switchable Circularly Polarized Luminescence in Supramolecular Gels through Photomodulated FRET

While the tremendous deal of efforts has been dedicated to the design and fabrication of materials with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), the development of the chiroptical switch between different CPL signals is one of the important routes toward its application. Here, we prepared a supramolecular gel from the coassemblies containing a chiral gelator (9-fluoren-methoxycarbonyl-functionalized glutamate derivatives, FLG), a fluorescent molecule [(rhodamine B, RhB) or (2',7'-dichlorofluorescein sodium salt, DCF)], and a photochromic molecule [1,2-bis(2,4-dimethyl-5-phenyl-3-thienyl)-3,3,4,4,5,5-hexafluoro-1-cyclopentene, DAE], thus constructing photomodulated switchable CPL soft materials. It was found that FLG could form supramolecular gel in ethanol and self-assemble into left-handed twisted nanostructures. During the formation of a co-gel with RhB (or DCF) and DAE, the chirality of FLG could be effectively transferred to both the fluorescent and photochromic components, which induced them with chiroptical properties including CPL and circular dichroism (CD). DAE undergoes a reversible transition between the achromatous open state and the dark purple closed state in the co-gel under alternating irradiation with UV and visible light. During such a process, an intermolecular Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) behavior from fluorescent RhB to ring-closed DAE caused the emission quenching of RhB, which led to CPL silence of RhB in the co-gel. Subsequent irradiation with visible light caused the restoration of the emission and CPL activity with the restored open state. These changes could be repeated many times upon alternate UV and visible irradiation. Therefore, a reversible CPL switch was fabricated in supramolecular gels through the photomodulated FRET process.

Not by Serendipity: Rationally Designed Reversible Temperature-Responsive Circularly Polarized Luminescence Inversion by Coupling Two Scenarios of Harata-Kodaka's Rule

Intelligent control over the handedness of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is of special significance in smart optoelectronics, information storage, and data encryption; however, it still remains a great challenge to rationally design a CPL material that displays reversible handedness inversion without changing the system composition. Herein, we show this comes true by coupling the two scenarios of Harata-Kodaka's rule on the same supramolecular platform of crystalline microtubes self-assembled from surfactant-cyclodextrin host-guest complexes. Upon coassembling a linear dye with its electronic transition dipole moment outside of the cavity of β-CyD, the chirality transfer from the induced chirality of SDS in the SDS@2β-CyD microtubes to the dye generates left-handed CPL at room temperature. Upon elevating temperature, the dye forms inclusion complex with β-CyD, so that right-handed CPL is induced because the polar group of the dye is outside of the cavity of β-CyD. This process is completely reversible. We envision that host-guest chemistry would be very promising in creating smart CPL inversion materials for a vast number of applications.

Photoresponsive chiral vesicles as a light harvesting matrix with tunable chiroptical properties

A chiral vesicle system with photo-regulated chiroptical properties including Cotton effects and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) was reported. Photoresponsive cyanostilbene was conjugated to the cholesteryl group, which provides chiral centers and lipophilic domain for the flexible vesicle membrane formation. The building block self-assembled into vesicles with exciton Cotton effects and CPL. The high dissymmetry g-factor of CPL at 10-2 order of magnitude was achieved. Upon UV light irradiation, Cotton effects were enhanced with an elevated g-factor by 3-fold, while the CPL dissymmetry factor showed a light irradiation resistance. A hydrophobic fluorescent dye (Nile Red) was loaded into vesicle membranes to allow energy transfer and chirality transfer to give red color CPL with retained high g-factor, while resistance to the UV light irradiation of vesicles was enhanced after loading the fluorescent dye. This study highlights the fabrication of the chiral vesicle system with noninvasively stimulus-responsive chiroptical properties, which may provide new thoughts for the fabrication of smart chiroptical materials in aqueous media.

pH-influenced handedness inversion of circularly polarized luminescence

Supramolecular co-assemblies between tolane-derived Phe–Phe dipeptides and 1,2-diaminoethane were fabricated, and CPL handedness inversion was achieved by regulating the pH value.

Circularly polarized luminescence of nanoassemblies via multi-dimensional chiral architecture control

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials are currently an important class of chiroptical materials that are attracting increasing interest. Nanoassemblies constructed from chiral or achiral building blocks show great potential for achieving CPL-active nanomaterials with high quantum yields and dissymmetry factors, which is crucial for further applications. In nanoassemblies, the dimensional morphology affects the chiroptical properties significantly since the microscopic packing modes will affect the luminescence processes and chirality transfer processes. In this review, we will show some examples for illustrating the relationship between multi-dimensional morphology and chiroptical properties. Furthermore, with dimensional morphology tuning, higher dissymmetry factors would be obtained. We hope to provide a useful and powerful insight into the design and control of CPL-active nanoassemblies via morphology control.

Solvent-controlled E/Z isomerization vs. [2 + 2] photocycloaddition mediated by supramolecular polymerization

Control over the photochemical outcome of photochromic molecules in solution represents a major challenge, as photoexcitation often leads to multiple competing photochemical and/or supramolecular pathways resulting in complex product mixtures. Herein, we demonstrate precise and efficient control over the photochemical behaviour of cyanostilbenes in solution using a straightforward solvent-controlled approach based on supramolecular polymerization. To this end, we designed a π-extended cyanostilbene bolaamphiphile that exhibits tuneable solvent-dependent photochemical behaviour. Photoirradiation of the system in a monomeric state (in organic solvents) exclusively leads to a highly reversible and efficient E/Z photoisomerization, whereas a nearly quantitative [2 + 2] photocycloaddition into a single cyclobutane (anti head-to-tail) occurs in aqueous solutions. These results can be rationalized by a highly regular and preorganized antiparallel J-type arrangement of the cyanostilbene units that is driven by aqueous supramolecular polymerization. The presented concept demonstrates a novel approach towards solvent-selective and environmentally friendly photochemical transformations, which is expected to broaden the scope of supramolecular polymerization.

The Progress and Perspective of Organic Molecules With Switchable Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has been under intense research for future applications in high-resolution 3D displays, smart sensors, and information technologies. Different types of CPL materials have been developed, but neither the handedness nor the asymmetrical luminescence degree can be inferred from the material composition or the components. CPL materials with switchable handedness or emission wavelength play an important role, reducing the need for repetitive bottom-up synthesis. Here, we have presented switchable CPL behaviors toward multiple reported stimuli, including light irradiation, host-guest interaction, metal ions, pH, solvent, temperature, etc. This summary and discussion of the effective stimuli is aimed to promote rational future material exploration and boost related multidisciplinary applications.

Aggregation-Induced Emission and Organogels with Chiral and Racemic Pyrene-Substituted Cyanostyrenes

The synthesis, photophysical investigations, and organogel formation of pyrene-phenyl acrylonitriles (1-6) bearing mono-, di-, and trichiral and racemic substitutions were studied. The molecules self-assemble in water and show remarkable emission wavelength and intensity changes associated with distinct color changes. Cryo-scanning electron microscopy (Cryo-SEM) images show the formation of uniform nanoaggregates for the monosubstituted derivatives and network-like structures for di- and trisubstituted derivatives. The favorable π-π stacking ability of the coplanar pyrene ring, steric restrictions due to the cyano group, and beneficial noncovalent interactions from the citronellol moiety allow the molecules to form excellent organogels with fibrous and twisted ribbon morphology for the racemic and chiral derivatives. The organogels based on small molecules could be of high relevance for potential investigations involving soft biological matter.

Tunable morphologies and emission of photosensitive supramolecular self-assemblies through positional and trans-cis isomerization

Cyanostilbene units are widely attractive as photoresponsive supramolecular building blocks whose structures and emission can be modulated by trans-cis isomerization. Generally, the change of properties is related to the molecular structure of cyanostilbene, which is still unpredictable and needs to be explored. Herein, two benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (BTA) based cyanostilbene derivatives with different cyano positions have been designed to investigate the emission as well as structural changes during the trans-cis photoisomerization process in monomer and aggregation states, respectively. In the monomer state, the derivative with cyano groups at the outer position, β-BTTPA, exhibits obvious emission enhancement upon UV irradiation, while the other derivative (α-BTTPA) shows emission quenching. In addition, upon the formation of aggregates, β-BTTPA forms nano-level fibers with blue-green emission, but α-BTTPA forms micron-level flat ribbons with blue emission. More importantly, also driven by the trans-cis photoisomerization, the self-assemblies show morphological transitions (ribbons/fibers to spheres) due to the fact that the equilibrium of the system is broken by the photoreactions. Such changes further contribute to emission switching as well as enhanced hydrophobic properties.

One- and Two-Component Organogels Containing Cyanostilbene without any Auxiliary Substituents

Pyridyl acrylonitrile without traditional auxiliary groups form stable organogels in ethanol. The addition of a second non-gelating cyanostilbene component results in a more stable two-component gel. Single crystal X-ray data reveal the influence of C-H⋅ ⋅ ⋅N, C-H⋅ ⋅ ⋅π, and π-π interactions in the formation of organogels. The morphology of the xerogels was studied by using SEM, which showed the self-assembly of molecules to fibers and sheet-like structures, and phase differences upon the gel formation and the structural phase characterization was measured using powder XRD. Exposure of the organogels to acidic (TFA) vapors results in distinct color changes and loss of gelation properties, thus highlighting the potential of these gels in sensing. The results represent a rare example of two-component organogels using two different cyanostilbene units and show that functional two-component organogels can be formed by utilizing the synergistic effects of the individual components.

Multi-color tunable circularly polarized luminescence in one single AIE system

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials with a large luminescence dissymmetry factor (g_lum) and multi-color properties are very attractive. While multi-color tunable CPL can be realized by different organic dyes, the challenge of realizing both a higher g_lum and multiple colors using a single component remains. Here, we design an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorophore, which is a pyridine functionalized cyanostilbene attached to a chiral unit, and realize multi-color tunable CPL with a high g_lum. The compound can self-assemble into a nanohelix and form both gel and xerogel films, exhibiting blue CPL with large g_lum values of −3.0 × 10⁻² and −1.7 × 10⁻², respectively. With the assistance of pyridine protonation, the xerogel films exhibit red-shifted CPL signals from 480 nm to 530 nm, covering from blue via green and yellow to orange. Additionally, the g_lum remains constant during the process. This work paves a simple and convenient way to construct multi-color tunable CPL materials using a single molecule.

A multi-color tunable circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) xerogel film with a large luminescence dissymmetry factor (g_lum) is achieved using a single compound upon protonation.

1,8-Dioxapyrene-based electrofluorochromic supramolecular hyperbranched polymers

A 1,8-dioxapyrene-based electrofluorochromic supramolecular polymer was constructed through the coordination of terpyridine ligands with Eu³⁺ ions. The polymer can be used in anti-counterfeiting inks.

A tetrathiafulvalene–l-glutamine conjugated derivative as a supramolecular gelator for embedded C60 and absorbed rhodamine B

An l-glutamine-containing tetrathiafulvalene gelator could form charge-transfer complex gels in the presence of C₆₀, and also the native gel exhibited excellent absorption properties for the removal of rhodamine B from aqueous solution.

Supramolecular Nanopumps with Chiral Recognition for Moving Organic Pollutants from Water

Since organic pollutants in water resources have raised concerns on aquatic ecosystems and human health, mechanical machines such as a nanopump for rapid and efficient removal of pollutants from water with regeneration properties remains a challenge. Here, a pH-responsive artificial pump from left-handed porous tubules into right-handed solid fibers was presented by the self-assembly of bent-shaped aromatic amphiphiles. The bent-shaped amphiphile with a pH-sensitive segment was demonstrated in aromatic hexameric macrocycles, which could contract into dimeric disks. Such a switchable aromatic pore with superhydrophobicity was well-suited for an efficient removal and controlled release of organic pollutants from water through pulsating motion. The removal efficiency is found to be 78% for ethinyloestradiol and 82% for bisphenol. Additionally, the pumping accompanied by chiral inversion was endowed with a rapid removal and convenient regenerable ability. The inflation from right-handed solid fibers into left-handed tubules for efficient removal pollutants was remarkably promoted by (-)-acidic enantiomer of malic acid, whereas the contraction with full desorption of pollutants was incisively responsive to alkaline with (+)-conformation. The kinetically regulable porous device with a chiral recognition will provide a promising platform for the construction of rapid responsible machine for sewage treatment.

Water inversed helicity of nanostructures from ionic self-assembly of a chiral gelator and an achiral component

The ionic self-assemblies (ISAs) formed by a cationic chiral organogelator (l-glutamide amphiphile, abbreviated as PULG) and anionic dyes exhibited helical nanostructures. And the formed helical structures can be tuned by water amount in the ethanol/water solvent. In pure ethanol, the chirality of the gelator was successfully transferred to the achiral components, which was confirmed by the appearance of an induced CD signal in the achiral components. Meanwhile, the electrostatic interaction between the gelator and achiral dyes contributed to the chirality amplification, causing the nanofibrous structures of the gelator to be transformed to uniform left-handed helices. Upon adding water to ethanol, the induced CD signal exhibited inversion from positive to negative. Interestingly, the left-handed helices formed by ISA of PULG/anionic dyes in ethanol were inverted to right-handed helices with the addition of water. Based on detailed investigations of the XRD patterns, CD and UV/Vis spectra, the mechanism of helicity inversion was proposed: left-handed helices were dominated by hydrogen bonding and right-handed helices were dominated by π-π stacking. This work exemplifies a feasible method to invert the helicity of chiral nanostructures in co-assembly and gives an insight into the conformation change of biomacromolecules in a biological system.
