Abstract
The functionalization of π-conjugated scaffolds with sterically demanding substituents is a widely used tactic to suppress cofacial (H-type) stacking interactions, which may even inhibit self-assembly. Contrary to expectations, we demonstrate herein that increasing steric effects can result in an enhanced thermodynamic stability of H-type supramolecular polymers. In our approach, we have investigated two boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) dyes with bulky phenyl (2) and mesityl (3) meso-substituents and compared their self-assembly in nonpolar media with that of a parent meso-methyl BODIPY 1 lacking bulky groups. While the enhanced steric demand induces pathway complexity, the superior thermodynamic stability of the H-type pathways can be rationalized in terms of additional enthalpic gain arising from intermolecular C-H⋅⋅⋅F-B interactions of the orthogonally arranged aromatic substituents, which overrule their inherent steric demand. Our findings underline the importance of balancing competing non-covalent interactions in self-assembly.

Abstract
Borepin, a 7‐membered boron‐containing heterocycle, has become an emerging molecular platform for the development of new materials and optoelectronics. While electron‐deficient borepins are well‐established, reduced electron‐rich species have remained elusive. Herein we report the first isolable, crystalline borepin radical (2 a, 2 b) and anion (3 a, 3 b) complexes, which have been synthesized by potassium graphite (KC8) reduction of cyclic(alkyl)(amino) carbene‐dibenzo[b,d]borepin precursors. Borepin radicals and anions have been characterized by EPR or NMR, elemental analysis, X‐ray crystallography, and cyclic voltammetry. In addition, the bonding features have been investigated computationally using density functional theory.

Aggregation caused quenching to aggregation induced emission transformation: a precise tuning based on BN-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons toward subcellular organelle specific imaging. Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with boron–nitrogen (BN) moieties have attracted tremendous interest due to their intriguing electronic and optoelectronic properties. However, most of the BN-fused π-systems reported to date are difficult to modify and exhibit traditional aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) characteristics. This phenomenon greatly limits their scope of application. Thus, continuing efforts to seek novel, structurally distinct and functionally diverse structures are highly desirable. Herein, we proposed a one-stone-two-birds strategy including simultaneous exploration of reactivity and tuning of the optical and electronic properties for BN-containing π-skeletons through flexible regioselective functionalization engineering. In this way, three novel functionalized BN luminogens (DPA-BN-BFT, MeO-DPA-BN-BFT and DMA-DPA-BN-BFT) with similar structures were obtained. Intriguingly, DPA-BN-BFT, MeO-DPA-BN-BFT and DMA-DPA-BN-BFT exhibit completely different emission behaviors. Fluorogens DPA-BN-BFT and MeO-DPA-BN-BFT exhibit a typical ACQ effect; in sharp contrast, DMA-DPA-BN-BFT possesses a prominent aggregation induced emission (AIE) effect. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to integrate ACQ and AIE properties into one BN aromatic backbone with subtle modified structures. Comprehensive analysis of the crystal structure and theoretical calculations reveal that relatively large twisting angles, multiple intermolecular interactions and tight crystal packing modes endow DMA-DPA-BN-BFT with strong AIE behavior. More importantly, cell imaging demonstrated that luminescent materials DPA-BN-BFT and DMA-DPA-BN-BFT can highly selectively and sensitively detect lipid droplets (LDs) in living MCF-7 cells. Overall, this work provides a new viewpoint of the rational design and synthesis of advanced BN–polycyclic aromatics with AIE features and triggers the discovery of new functions and properties of azaborine chemistry. A one-stone-two-birds strategy including simultaneous exploration of reactivity and tuning of the optical and electronic properties for BN-fused polycyclic aromatics through flexible regioselective functionalization engineering is presented.![]()

Abstract
Planarized triarylboranes are attracting increasing attention not only as models of boron-doped graphenes, but also as promising materials for organic optoelectronics. In particular, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) skeletons with embedded boron atom(s) in the inner positions are of importance in light of their high chemical stability and π-stacking ability derived from their planar geometries. Herein, we disclose a robust synthesis of such fully fused boron-doped PAHs and their self-assembly behavior in aqueous media to explore their potential utility in biological applications. The synthesis using in situ-generated planar diarylboranes as a key precursor afforded a series of fully fused boron-doped PAHs, even including an amphiphilic derivative with hydrophilic side chains. These compounds exhibited red emission in solution, and slight structural modification resulted in increased fluorescence brightness. While these compounds showed relatively low Lewis acidity compared to their partially ring-fused counterparts, their Lewis acidities were slightly increased in polar solvents compared to those in nonpolar solvents. In addition, their B–N Lewis acid–base adducts, even those with a strong, charge-neutral Lewis base such as N,N-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP), exhibited photo-dissociation behavior in the excited state. The amphiphilic derivative showed significant spectral changes with increased water content in DMSO/H2O mixed media and formed sheet-like aggregates. The disassembly and assembly processes of the aggregates were externally controlled by the addition of DMAP and an acid, accompanied by a change in the fluorescence intensity. A series of fully fused boron-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons is synthesized. Self-assembly of an amphiphilic derivative can be controlled by addition of a Lewis base or an acid in aqueous media.![]()

Abstract
Molecular nanocarbons containing heptagonal rings have attracted increasing interest due to their dynamic behavior, electronic properties, aromaticity, and solid-state packing. Heptagon incorporation can not only induce negative curvature within nanocarbon scaffolds, but also confer significantly altered properties through interaction with adjacent non-hexagonal rings. Despite the disclosure of several beautiful examples in recent years, synthetic strategies toward heptagon-embedded molecular nanocarbons remain relatively limited due to the intrinsic challenges of heptagon formation and incorporation into polyarene frameworks. In this Review, recent advances in solution-mediated and surface-assisted synthesis of heptagon-containing molecular nanocarbons, as well as the intriguing properties of these frameworks, will be discussed.

Abstract
We report here the first successful synthesis of planar triphenylborane 1 with the phenyl groups bridged by oxygen and nitrogen atoms via double nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction. The hetero atom-bridged 1 has excellent planarity. Its structural and photophysical properties are tunable by altering the bridging atoms.

Abstract
Three synthetic methods towards semi-planar triarylboranes with two aryl rings connected by a methylene bridge have been developed. The fine-tuning of their stereoelectronic properties and Lewis acidities was achieved by introducing fluorine, methyl, methoxy, n-butyl and phenyl groups either at their exocyclic or bridged aryl rings. X-ray diffraction analysis and quantum-chemical calculations provided quantitative information on the structural distortion experienced by the near planar hydro-boraanthracene skeleton during the association with Lewis bases such as NH3 and F- . Though the methylene bridge between the ortho-positions of two aryl rings of triarylboranes decreased the Gibbs free energies of complexation with small Lewis bases by less than 5 kJ mol-1 relative to the classical Lewis acid BAr3 , the steric shielding of the CH2 bridge is sufficient to avoid the formation of Lewis adducts with larger Lewis bases such as triarylphosphines. A newly synthesized spirocyclic amino-borane with a long intramolecular B-N bond that could be dissociated under thermal process, UV-irradiation, or acidic conditions might be a potential candidate in Lewis pairs catalysis.

Abstract
Doubly boron-doped thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters based on a 9,10-diboraanthracene (DBA) acceptor decorated with ortho-donor groups (Cz2oDBA, 2; BuCz2oDBA, 3; DMAC2oDBA, 4) are prepared to realize high-efficiency green-to-red organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). X-ray diffraction analyses of 2 and 4 reveal the symmetrical and highly twisted ortho-donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) structure of the emitters. The twisted conformation leads to a very small energy splitting (ΔEST <0.08 eV) between the excited singlet and triplet states that gives rise to strong TADF, as supported by theoretical studies. Depending on the strength of the donor moieties, the emission color is fine-tuned in the visible region from green (2) to yellow (3) to red (4). Carbazole-containing 2 and 3 exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) approaching 100 %, whereas DMAC-substituted 4 is moderately emissive (PLQY=44 %) in a doped host film. Highly efficient green-to-red TADF-OLEDs are realized with the proposed ortho-D-A-D compounds as emitters. The green and yellow OLEDs incorporating Cz2oDBA (2) and BuCz2oDBA (3) emitters exhibit high external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of 26.6 % and 21.6 %, respectively. In particular, the green device shows an excellent power efficiency above 100 lm W-1 . A red OLED fabricated with a DMAC2oDBA (4) emitter exhibits a maximum EQE of 10.1 % with an electroluminescence peak at 615 nm.

Abstract
Realization of molecular quantum cellular automata (QCA), a promising architecture for molecular computing through current-free processes, requires improved understanding and application of mixed-valence (MV) molecules. In this report, we present an electrostatic approach to creating MV subspecies through internalizing opposite charges in close proximity to MV ionic moieties. This approach is demonstrated by unsymmetrically attaching a charge-responsive boron substituent to a well-known organometallic MV complex, biferrocenium. Guest anions (CN- and F- ) bind to the Lewis acidic boron center, leading to unusual blue-shifts of the intervalence charge-transfer (IVCT) bands. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported example of a zwitterionic MV series in which the degree of positive charge delocalization can be varied by changing the bound anions, and serves to clarify the interplay between IVCT parameters. The key underlying factor is the variable zero-level energy difference in the MV states. This work provides new insight into imbuing MV molecules with external charge-responsiveness, a prerequisite of molecular QCA techniques.

Abstract
The first examples of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and cyclic(alkyl)(amino) carbene (CAAC) stabilized borepinium and borafluorenium heterocycles are reported herein. The optical properties of the heterocyclic borenium cations were tuned by varying the Lewis base and by changing the number of atoms in the ring. More importantly, functionalizing the cationic boron ring system in the NHC-borafluorenium cation affords a temperature-sensitive molecule with reversible colorimetric "turn off/turn on" properties in solution. Notably, this is the first report of thermochromism in these cationic species. This property, which is mediated by an intermolecular boron-oxygen bond equilibrium, was examined in detail by X-ray crystallography, variable temperature-UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy (VT-UV/Vis), and density functional theory (DFT).

Abstract
In this study, we report the generation of new mixed-valence (MV) subspecies with charge-separated (CS) characters from an unsymmetrical acceptor-donor-donor (A-D-D) triad. The triad was synthesized by attaching a dimesitylboryl group (A) to a D-D conjugate that consisted of triarylamine (NAr3) units. The MV radical cation, obtained by chemical oxidation of the triad, exhibited a strong intervalence charge transfer (IVCT) absorption derived from the bis(NAr3)•+ moiety in the near-IR region. The charge-separated MV (CSMV) state, obtained by photoexcitation of the triad, caused a blue shift in IVCT energy in the femtosecond transient absorption spectra, reflecting a bias of positive charge distributions to the D end site. This resulted from increased electron density at the A site and restructuring of the central D site from NAr3 to NAr2 sites. Interestingly, any shift in the IVCT energy that was caused by the polarity of the solvent was minimal, reflecting the unique characteristics of the CSMV state. These findings represent the first detailed analysis of the CSMV state, including a comparison with conventional MV states. Therefore, this work provides new insights into counterion-free MV systems and their applications in molecular devices.

Abstract
A series of novel BN tetraphene derivatives have been prepared successfully for the first time via a post-functionalization strategy. The optical and electronic properties of these derivatives could be tuned systematically by the incorporation of different substituents on the main skeleton. The functionalized BN-containing luminogens have been explored for the detection of latent fingerprints (LFPs) on different substrates, including glass, aluminum foil, plastic, and ironware. This strategy provides great versatility in LFP imaging and good potential in elucidating the chemical information within LFPs, making the strategy valuable in forensic investigations.
