Abstract
Nonclassical P(III) centers have attracted much attention in recent years. Incorporating a P(III) center in a rigid bicyclic platform offers a particularly attractive way to invoke significant geometric distortion of the phosphorus atom that may in turn induce unusual reactivity. Although still relatively scarcely explored, phosphorus centers enforced in a non-C3 symmetry have gained significant traction lately. However, the current scaffolds are based on a relatively limited set of design principles and ligand platforms associated therewith. This work is focussed on the synthesis as well as versatile oxidation, addition and coordination chemistry of a geometrically distorted P(III) species featuring a synthetically modular, nonsymmetric trisamine platform derived from 2-(methylamino)-N-(2-(methylamino)phenyl)benzenesulfonamide.

Abstract
The primary phosphines MesPH2 and tBuPH2 react with 9‐iodo‐m‐carborane yielding B9‐connected secondary carboranylphosphines 1,7‐H2C2B10H9‐9‐PHR (R=2,4,6‐Me3C6H2 (Mes; 1
a), tBu (1
b)). Addition of tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane (BCF) to 1
a, b resulted in the zwitterionic compounds 1,7‐H2C2B10H9‐9‐PHR(p‐C6F4)BF(C6F5)2 (2
a, b) through nucleophilic para substitution of a C6F5 ring followed by fluoride transfer to boron. Further reaction with Me2SiHCl prompted a H−F exchange yielding the zwitterionic compounds 1,7‐H2C2B10H9‐9‐PHR(p‐C6F4)BH(C6F5)2 (3
a, b). The reaction of 2
a, b with one equivalent of R'MgBr (R’=Me, Ph) gave the extremely water‐sensitive frustrated Lewis pairs 1,7‐H2C2B10H9‐9‐PR(p‐C6F4)B(C6F5)2 (4
a, b). Hydrolysis of the B−C6F4 bond in 4
a, b gave the first tertiary B‐carboranyl phosphines with three distinct substituents, 1,7‐H2C2B10H9‐9‐PR(p‐C6F4H) (5
a, b). Deprotonation of the zwitterionic compounds 2
a, b and 3
a, b formed anionic phosphines [1,7‐H2C2B10H9‐9‐PR(p‐C6F4)BX(C6F5)2]−[DMSOH]+ (R=Mes, X=F (6
a), R=tBu, X=F (6
b); R=Mes, X=H (7
a), R=tBu, X=H (7
b)). Reaction of 2
a, b with an excess of Grignard reagents resulted in the addition of R’ at the boron atom yielding the anions [1,7‐H2C2B10H9‐9‐PR(p‐C6F4)BR’(C6F5)2]− (R=Mes, R’=Me (8
a), R=tBu, R’=Me (8
b); R=Mes, R’=Ph (9
a), R=tBu, R’=Ph (9
b)) with [MgBr(Et2O)n]+ as counterion. The ability of the zwitterionic compounds 3
a, b to hydrogenate imines as well as the Brønsted acidity of 3
a were investigated.

Abstract
Recently, the choice of ligand and geometric control of mononuclear complexes, which can affect the relaxation pathways and blocking temperature, have received wide attention in the field of single-ion magnets (SIMs). To find out the influence of the coordination environment on SIMs, two four-coordinate mononuclear Co(II) complexes [NEt4][Co(PPh3)X3] (X = Cl-, 1; Br-, 2) have been synthesized and studied by X-ray single crystallography, magnetic measurements, high-frequency and -field EPR (HF-EPR) spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. Both complexes are in a cubic space group Pa3̄ (No. 205), containing a slightly distorted tetrahedral moiety with crystallographically imposed C3v symmetry through the [Co(PPh3)X3]- anion. The direct-current (dc) magnetic data and HF-EPR spectroscopy indicated the anisotropic S = 3/2 spin ground states of the Co(II) ions with the easy-plane anisotropy for 1 and 2. Ab initio calculations were performed to confirm the positive magnetic anisotropies of 1 and 2. Frequency- and temperature-dependent alternating-current (ac) magnetic susceptibility measurements revealed slow magnetic relaxation for 1 and 2 at an applied dc field. Finally, the magnetic properties of 1 and 2 were compared to those of other Co(II) complexes with a [CoAB3] moiety.

Abstract
Enhanced rates and selectivity in enzymes are enabled in part by precisely tuned electric fields within active sites. Analogously, the use of charged groups to leverage electrostatics in molecular systems is a promising strategy to tune reactivity. However, separation of the through space and through bond effects of charged functional groups is a long standing challenge that limits the rational application of electric fields in molecular systems. To address this challenge we developed a method using the phosphorus selenium coupling value (J P-Se) of anionic phosphine selenides to quantify the electrostatic contribution of the borate moiety to donor strength. In this analysis we report the synthesis of a novel anionic phosphine, PPh2CH2BF3K, the corresponding tetraphenyl phosphonium and tetraethyl ammonium selenides [PPh4][SePPh2CH2BF3] and [TEA][SePPh2CH2BF3], and the Rh carbonyl complex [PPh4][Rh(acac)(CO)(PPh2(CH2BF3))]. Solvent-dependent changes in J P-Se were fit using Coulomb's law and support up to an 80% electrostatic contribution to the increase in donor strength of [PPh4][SePPh2CH2BF3] relative to SePPh2Et, while controls with [TEA][SePPh2CH2BF3] exclude convoluting ion pairing effects. Calculations using explicit solvation or point charges effectively replicate the experimental data. This J P-Se method was extended to [PPh4][SePPh2(2-BF3Ph)] and likewise estimates up to a 70% electrostatic contribution to the increase in donor strength relative to SePPh3. The use of PPh2CH2BF3K also accelerates C-F oxidative addition reactivity with Ni(COD)2 by an order of magnitude in comparison to the comparatively donating neutral phosphines PEt3 and PCy3. This enhanced reactivity prompted the investigation of catalytic fluoroarene C-F borylation, with improved yields observed for less fluorinated arenes. These results demonstrate that covalently bound charged functionalities can exert a significant electrostatic influence under common solution phase reaction conditions and experimentally validate theoretical predictions regarding electrostatic effects in reactivity.

Abstract
ortho-Substituted and unsymmetrical 9-phospha-triptycenes were synthesized via two synthetic approaches involving densely functionalized ortho-halogenated triarylmethane or phosphine precursors. ortho-Substituents imposed a considerable steric shielding due to the tricyclic cage-shaped structure with the aryl rings p-systems orthogonal to the phosphorus electron pair. A series of Au(i) and Rh(i) complexes were analysed in the solid state to determine Tolman electronic parameters, cone angles and buried volumes of these unprecedented functionalized phosphines. Quantum chemical calculations of electronic and steric descriptors revealed that these cage-shaped phosphines are electron-poor and that single methyl substituent is enough to provide the largest effect on steric shielding reported so far in triarylphosphines. An unsymmetrically substituted 9-phosphatriptycene was resolved by chiral HPLC, opening the avenue towards stable P-chirogenic triarylphosphines with unlimited configurational stability for new catalyst development in asymmetric transition-metal catalysis.

Abstract
Using a new divergent approach, conjugated triarylborane dendrimers were synthesized up to the 2nd generation. The synthetic strategy consists of three steps: 1) functionalization, via iridium catalyzed C-H borylation; 2) activation, via fluorination of the generated boronate ester with K[HF2 ] or [N(nBu4 )][HF2 ]; and 3) expansion, via reaction of the trifluoroborate salts with aryl Grignard reagents. The concept was also shown to be viable for a convergent approach. All but one of the conjugated borane dendrimers exhibit multiple, distinct and reversible reduction potentials, making them potentially interesting materials for applications in molecular accumulators. Based on their photophysical properties, the 1st generation dendrimers exhibit good conjugation over the whole system. However, the conjugation does not increase further upon expansion to the 2nd generation, but the molar extinction coefficients increase linearly with the number of triarylborane subunits, suggesting a potential application as photonic antennas.

Abstract
Three different perfluoroalkylated borafluorenes (F Bf) were prepared and their electronic and photophysical properties were investigated. The systems have four trifluoromethyl moieties on the borafluorene moiety as well as two trifluoromethyl groups at the ortho positions of their exo-aryl moieties. They differ with regard to the para substituents on their exo-aryl moieties, being a proton (F XylF Bf, F Xyl: 2,6-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl), a trifluoromethyl group (F MesF Bf, F Mes: 2,4,6-tris(trifluoromethyl)phenyl) or a dimethylamino group (p-NMe2 -F XylF Bf, p-NMe2 -F Xyl: 4-(dimethylamino)-2,6-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl), respectively. All derivatives exhibit extraordinarily low reduction potentials, comparable to those of perylenediimides. The most electron-deficient derivative F MesF Bf was also chemically reduced and its radical anion isolated and characterized. Furthermore, all compounds exhibit very long fluorescent lifetimes of about 250 ns up to 1.6 μs; however, the underlying mechanisms responsible for this differ. The donor-substituted derivative p-NMe2 -F XylF Bf exhibits thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) from a charge-transfer (CT) state, whereas the F MesF Bf and F XylF Bf borafluorenes exhibit only weakly allowed locally excited (LE) transitions due to their symmetry and low transition-dipole moments.

Abstract
In this combined experimental and theoretical study, a computational protocol is reported to predict the excited states in D-π-A compounds containing the B(FXyl)2 (FXyl = 2,6-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl) acceptor group for the design of new thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters. To this end, the effect of different donor and π-bridge moieties on the energy gaps between local and charge-transfer singlet and triplet states is examined. To prove this computationally aided design concept, the D-π-B(FXyl)2 compounds 1-5 were synthesized and fully characterized. The photophysical properties of these compounds in various solvents, polymeric film, and in a frozen matrix were investigated in detail and show excellent agreement with the computationally obtained data. Furthermore, a simple structure-property relationship is presented on the basis of the molecular fragment orbitals of the donor and the π-bridge, which minimize the relevant singlet-triplet gaps to achieve efficient TADF emitters.

Hu L, Mahaut D, Tumanov N, Wouters J, Robiette R, Berionni G. Complementary Synthetic Approaches toward 9-Phosphatriptycene and Structure-Reactivity Investigations of Its Association with Sterically Hindered Lewis Acids. J Org Chem 2019; 84:11268-11274. Abstract
Two practical and high-yielding syntheses of 9-phosphatriptycene are reported. In both approaches, the key step is based on the cyclization of a (tris)lithio-triphenylmethane or a (tris)lithio-triphenylphosphine intermediate on a phosphorus or a carbon electrophile, respectively. The association of 9-phosphatriptycene with representative boron- and carbon-centered Lewis acids was investigated by IR, NMR, and UV-vis titration experiments and by computational methods, shedding light on its steric hindrance, σ-donating ability, and Brønsted and Lewis basicities.
