Binaphthalene-Assisted Axial Chirality in Porphyrins: Toward Solid-State Circularly Polarized Luminescence from Self-Assembled Nanostructures

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is emerging as an effective tool to study the excited-state optical activity in molecules and their self-assembled nanostructures. Chiral porphyrins are a class of optically active molecules wherein the ground-state chirality has been extensively studied in recent times using circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. However, obtaining CPL from porphyrin nanostructures, which would have vast implications in biological applications, has remained an uphill task. In this work, we design and synthesize a pair of chiral porphyrin enantiomers functionalized by axially chiral binaphthalene units at the four meso-positions. The molecule undergoes self-assembly following an isodesmic polymerization model, leading to the formation of a spherical nanostructure possessing opposite chirality. Favorable thermodynamic parameters achieved through the controlled experimental conditions helped drive the self-assembly in the forward direction. The limitations imposed by a large nonradiative decay constant arising due to the aggregation-induced quenching could be overcome by fabricating self-standing polymeric films of the nanostructures. The films exhibited relatively high radiative decay and, more interestingly, good CPL activity with clear mirror image spectra for the nanostructures with opposite chirality. The work on CPL-active solid-state materials opens avenue for the design and synthesis of a variety of porphyrin-based chromophoric systems and their nanoaggregates that can find potential application in the field of chiral biosensing and bioimaging, security tags, and display devices.

Porphyrin- and Bodipy-helicene conjugates: syntheses, separation of enantiomers and chiroptical properties

The synthesis of several new compounds containing a chromophore and a helicenic moiety is reported. The preparation, characterisation and some physico-chemical studies are detailed. In particular, the two enantiomers of several chiral molecules of this type were separated by chiral HPLC (both analytically and in a preparative way) and their racemisation rates were determined for short-lived species. Electronic circular dichroism (ECD) and circular polarised luminescence (CPL) measurements were performed for the compounds with a very long racemisation half-life. Chiral porphyrins and Bodipys both gave ECD and CPL responses over a large area of the visible spectrum.

Twisting of Porphyrin by Assembly in a Metal-Organic Framework yielding Chiral Photoconducting Films for Circularly-Polarized-Light Detection

While materials based on organic molecules usually have either superior optoelectronic or superior chiral properties, the combination of both is scarce. Here, a crystalline chiroptical film based on porphyrin with homochiral side groups is presented. While the dissolved molecule has a planar, thus, achiral porphyrin core, upon assembly in a metal-organic framework (MOF) film, the porphyrin core is twisted and chiral. The close packing and the crystalline order of the porphyrin cores in the MOF film also results in excellent optoelectronic properties. By exciting the Soret band of porphyrin, efficient photoconduction with a high On-Off-ratio is realized. More important, handedness-dependent circularly-polarized-light photoconduction with a dissymmetry factor g of 4.3×10^-4 is obtained. We foresee the combination of such assembly-induced chirality with the rich porphyrin chemistry will enable a plethora of organic materials with exceptional chiral and optoelectronic properties.

Circularly polarized luminescence in molecular recognition systems: Recent achievements

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) dyes are recognized to be new generation materials and have been actively developed. Molecular recognition systems provide nice approaches to novel CPL materials, such as stimuli-responsive switches and chemical sensing materials. CPL may be induced simply by mixing chiral or achiral, luminescent or nonluminescent host and guest; there are several combinations. Molecular recognition can potentially save time and effort to construct well-ordered chiral structures with noncovalent attractive interactions as compared with the multi-step synthesis of covalently bonded dyes. It is a challenging subject to engage molecular recognition events with CPL, and it is important and interesting to see how it is achieved. In fact, simple molecular recognition systems can even enable the fine adjustment of CPL performance and detailed conformational/configurational analysis of the excited state. Here we overview the recent achievements of simple host-guest complexes capable of exhibiting CPL, summarizing concisely the host/guest structures, CPL intensities, and characteristics.

Organocatalytic Polymers from Affordable and Readily Available Building Blocks for the Cycloaddition of CO2 to Epoxides

The catalytic cycloaddition of CO₂ to epoxides to afford cyclic carbonates as useful monomers, intermediates, solvents, and additives is a continuously growing field of investigation as a way to carry out the atom-economic conversion of CO₂ to value-added products. Metal-free organocatalytic compounds are attractive systems among various catalysts for such transformations because they are inexpensive, nontoxic, and readily available. Herein, we highlight and discuss key advances in the development of polymer-based organocatalytic materials that match these requirements of affordability and availability by considering their synthetic routes, the monomers, and the supports employed. The discussion is organized according to the number (monofunctional versus bifunctional materials) and type of catalytically active moieties, including both halide-based and halide-free systems. Two general synthetic approaches are identified based on the postsynthetic functionalization of polymeric supports or the copolymerization of monomers bearing catalytically active moieties. After a review of the material syntheses and catalytic activities, the chemical and structural features affecting catalytic performance are discussed. Based on such analysis, some strategies for the future design of affordable and readily available polymer-based organocatalysts with enhanced catalytic activity under mild conditions are considered.

Fluorescent cyclophanes and their applications

With the serendipitous discovery of crown ethers by Pedersen more than half a century ago and the subsequent introduction of host-guest chemistry and supramolecular chemistry by Cram and Lehn, respectively, followed by the design and synthesis of wholly synthetic cyclophanes-in particular, fluorescent cyclophanes, having rich structural characteristics and functions-have been the focus of considerable research activity during the past few decades. Cyclophanes with remarkable emissive properties have been investigated continuously over the years and employed in numerous applications across the field of science and technology. In this Review, we feature the recent developments in the chemistry of fluorescent cyclophanes, along with their design and synthesis. Their host-guest chemistry and applications related to their structure and properties are highlighted.

Exciton coupling chirality in helicene-porphyrin conjugates

Enantiopure helicene-porphyrin conjugates were prepared. They show strong changes in their circular dichroic response as compared to classical helicene derivatives, with highly intense bisignate Exciton Coupling (EC) signal and Δε values up to 680 M^-1 cm^-1 for the Soret band. They also display circularly polarized fluorescence in the (far-)red region, with dissymmetry factors up to 7 × 10^-4.

Synthesis and a Catalytic Study of Diastereomeric Cationic Chiral-at-Cobalt Complexes Based on (R,R)-1,2-Diphenylethylenediamine

Here we report the first synthesis of two diastereomeric cationic octahedral Co(III) complexes based on commercially available (R,R)-1,2-diphenylethylenediamine and salicylaldehyde. Both diastereoisomers with opposite chiralities at the metal center (Λ and Δ configurations) were prepared. The new Co(III) complexes possessed both acidic hydrogen-bond donating (HBD) NH moieties and nucleophilic counteranions and operate as bifunctional chiral catalysts for the challenging kinetic resolution of terminal and disubstituted epoxides by the reaction with CO₂ under mild conditions. The highest selectivity factor (s) of 2.8 for the trans-chalcone epoxide was achieved at low catalyst loading (2 mol %) in chlorobenzene, which is the best achieved result currently for this type of substrate.

Cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides by highly nucleophilic 4-aminopyridines: establishing a relationship between carbon basicity and catalytic performance by experimental and DFT investigations

New highly nucleophilic homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts based on the 3,4-diaminopyridine scaffold are reported for the halogen-free cycloaddition of CO₂ to epoxides.

Aggregation-Induced Circularly Polarized Luminescence from Boron Complexes with a Carbazolyl Schiff Base

A variety of carbazolyl-appended Schiff bases were readily synthesized from 1-formylcarbazoles and aniline derivatives. Boron complexation of the resulting ligands allowed for facile preparation of new carbazole-based BODIPY analogues showing solid-state fluorescence. Furthermore, some dyes were converted into chiral compounds through the Et₂ AlCl-mediated incorporation of a binaphthyl unit. The chiral dyes showed aggregation-induced fluorescence and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with the Φ_F and g_lum of up to 0.22 and -3.5×10^-3 , respectively, in the solid state. The solid-state fluorescence and CPL were well characterized by the crystal packing analyses and DFT calculations.

Tetrameric and Hexameric Porphyrin Nanorings: Template Synthesis and Photophysical Properties

Hexameric and tetrameric porphyrin nanorings, Z6·T6 and Z4·T4, were synthesized in 53% and 14% yields, respectively, by the Sonogashira-type self-oligomerization of porphyrin monomer 1 using hexadentate template T6 and tetrapyridylporphyrin template T4. Template-free nanorings Z6 and Z4 were also prepared. The femtosecond transient absorption measurements revealed fast excitation energy hopping (EEH) along these nanorings with hopping rates of 2-5 ps. Treatment of Z6 with chiral template CT6 gave Z6·CT6 showing circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in the absorption and fluorescence regions of Z6, respectively, which indicates chirality transfer from CT6 to Z6.

Beyond Chiral Organic (p-Block) Chromophores for Circularly Polarized Luminescence: The Success of d-Block and f-Block Chiral Complexes

Chiral molecules are essential for the development of advanced technological applications in spintronic and photonic. The best systems should produce large circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) as estimated by their dissymmetry factor (g _lum), which can reach the maximum values of -2 ≤ g _lum ≤ 2 when either pure right- or left-handed polarized light is emitted after standard excitation. For matching this requirement, theoretical considerations indicate that optical transitions with large magnetic and weak electric transition dipole moments represent the holy grail of CPL. Because of their detrimental strong and allowed electric dipole transitions, popular chiral emissive organic molecules display generally moderate dissymmetry factors (10^-5 ≤ g _lum ≤ 10^-3). However, recent efforts in this field show that g _lum can be significantly enhanced when the chiral organic activators are part of chiral supramolecular assemblies or of liquid crystalline materials. At the other extreme, chiral Eu^III- and Sm^III-based complexes, which possess intra-shell parity-forbidden electric but allowed magnetic dipole transitions, have yielded the largest dissymmetry factor reported so far with g _lum ~ 1.38. Consequently, 4f-based metal complexes with strong CPL are currently the best candidates for potential technological applications. They however suffer from the need for highly pure samples and from considerable production costs. In this context, chiral earth-abundant and cheap d-block metal complexes benefit from a renewed interest according that their CPL signal can be optimized despite the larger covalency displayed by d-block cations compared with 4f-block analogs. This essay thus aims at providing a minimum overview of the theoretical aspects rationalizing circularly polarized luminescence and their exploitation for the design of chiral emissive metal complexes with strong CPL. Beyond the corroboration that f-f transitions are ideal candidates for generating large dissymmetry factors, a special attention is focused on the recent attempts to use chiral Cr^III-based complexes that reach values of g _lum up to 0.2. This could pave the way for replacing high-cost rare earths with cheap transition metals for CPL applications.

Azahelicene-Fused BODIPY Analogues Showing Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Helical carbazole-based BODIPY analogues were readily synthesized via aza[7]helicenes. The structures of azahelicene-incorporated BF₂ dyes were elucidated by x-ray diffraction analysis. DFT calculations revealed that the π-conjugated system expanded from the helicene moiety to the BODIPY framework. The azahelicene-fused boron complexes showed the Cotton effects and the circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in the visible region. Furthermore, an axially chiral binaphthyl group was attached to the helically chiral dyes, which enhanced the chiroptical properties.

Synthesis and Chiroptical Properties of Chiral Carbazole-Based BODIPYs

A series of carbazole-based boron dipyrromethenes (BODIPYs) 2 a-g bearing binaphthyl units have been synthesized by the Et₂ AlCl-mediated reaction of the corresponding BODIPY difluorides 1 a-g with 1,1'-binaphthalene-2,2'-diol. Substituents such as halogen, nitrile, and amino groups were tolerated under the reaction conditions, and the reaction of the phenylethynyl-substituted 1 h gave (R,R)-3 h bearing two binaphthyl units. The chiroptical properties of these dyes with different substituents were investigated by UV/Vis, CD, fluorescence, and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) spectroscopy. The CD spectra showed Cotton effects in the absorption region of the BODIPY moieties. In addition, they showed CPL both in solution and in the solid state. Interestingly, several dyes recorded higher g_lum values in the solid state, probably due to intermolecular interactions. Because (R,R)-3 h recorded relatively low g_lum values, the diastereomer (R,S)-3 h was prepared. The (R,S) diastereomer showed intense CPL, which suggests a synergetic effect of the two binaphthyl groups. Finally, chiral carbazole-based BODIPY dimers have been synthesized for the first time and their chiroptical properties were investigated. They showed redshifted fluorescence and CPL, which reached the near-IR (NIR) region in the solid state.

Mechanism and stereoselectivity of benzylic C-H hydroxylation by Ru-porphyrin: a computational study

The mechanism and origin of the stereoselectivity of asymmetric benzylic C-H hydroxylation by Ru-porphyrin were elucidated with density functional theory calculations. The reaction proceeds via a hydrogen-atom abstraction/oxygen-rebound pathway, wherein a high-valent ruthenium-oxo species abstracts a hydrogen atom from ethylbenzene to generate a radical pair intermediate, followed by the oxygen-rebound process to form 1-phenylethanol. The hydrogen-atom abstraction step is the rate- and stereoselectivity-determining step. Based on the mechanistic model, the computed stereoselectivity is in agreement with the experimental observations. Analysis of the distortion/interaction model suggests that stereoselectivity is determined by both the distortion energy of the ethylbenzene and the interaction energy between the ethylbenzene and the chiral Ru-porphyrin. The steric repulsion between the phenyl group of ethylbenzene and the bulky substituent of Ru-porphyrin is the leading cause of chiral induction.

Catalytic enantioselective synthesis using carbon dioxide as a C1 synthon

This review summarizes the advances in catalytic enantioselective reactions using CO₂ as a C1 synthon, introduces strategies and discusses advantages and limitations, highlights the application, and outlines the synthetic opportunities.

Unsymmetrical β-functionalized ‘push–pull’ porphyrins: synthesis and photophysical, electrochemical and nonlinear optical properties

A new family of unsymmetrical β-TPA appended ‘push–pull’ porphyrins has been synthesized in good yield for the first time. They exhibited red shifted broad absorption spectral features with high dipole moments and tunable redox properties.

Chiral Bifunctional Metalloporphyrin Catalysts for Kinetic Resolution of Epoxides with Carbon Dioxide

Chiral binaphthyl-strapped Zn(II) porphyrins with triazolium halide units were synthesized as bifunctional catalysts for kinetic resolution of epoxides with CO₂. Several catalysts were screened by changing the linker length and nucleophilic counteranions, and the optimized catalyst accelerated the enantioselective reaction at ambient temperature to produce optically active cyclic carbonates and epoxides.

Synthesis of well-defined yttrium-based Lewis acids by capturing a reaction intermediate and catalytic application for cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides under atmospheric pressure

Single-site yttrium complexes were prepared by immobilization of an intermediate of cycloaddition of CO₂ to epoxides and applied in catalysis.
