Abstract
We present herein magneto-structural studies of three heterometallic Zn2Dy complexes: [Zn2Dy(L)2Cl2(H2O)](ClO4)·4H2O (1), [Zn2Dy(L)2Br2(H2O)](ClO4)·4H2O (2) and [Zn2Dy(L)2(OAc)I(H2O)]I3·4H2O (3), utilizing a new Schiff base ligand, N,N'-bis(3-methoxy-5-methylsalicylidene)-1,2-diaminocyclohexane (H2L). Complexes 1 and 2 exhibit remarkable magnetic relaxation behaviour with relatively high energy barriers in zero field (Ueff: 244 K for 1 and 211 K for 2) and notable hysteresis temperatures, despite the low local geometric symmetry around the central DyIII ions. The SMM performance of these complexes is further enhanced under an applied magnetic field, with Ueff increasing to 309 K for 1 and 269 K for 2, positioning them as elite members within the Zn-Dy SMM family. These findings emphasize the substantial influence of remote modulation on ZnII beyond the first coordination sphere of DyIII ions on their dynamic magnetic relaxation properties. Ab initio studies demonstrate that the relative orientation of the phenoxo-oxygen donor atoms around the DyIII ion is critical for determining the magnetic anisotropy and relaxation dynamics in these systems. Additionally, experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that the coordination of the bridging acetate towards the hard plane, combined with significant distortion from the ideal ZnO2Dy diamond core arrangement caused by the acetate ion, results in low magnetic anisotropy in complex 3, thereby leading to field-induced SMM behaviour. Overall, this study unveils the effects of co-ligands on the SMM performance in a series of linear trinuclear Zn-Dy-Zn complexes, which exhibit low local geometric symmetry around the DyIII centres.

Abstract
A rare all-inorganic high-nuclearity mixed-valent {Mn11} cluster embedded polyoxoniobate, K25H43{(Te4Nb9O33)3(Nb6O19)5(TeVINb5O14)[(TeIVO3)2(MnII7MnIII4O19)]}·97H2O (1), has been synthesized by a one-pot reaction. Compound 1 contains the largest manganese cluster {Mn11} core among polyoxoniobates reported to date. {Mn11} consists of three quasi-cubane {Mn3O4} units and is simultaneously encapsulated by lacunary α-Keggin {Te4Nb9O36} and Lindqvist {Nb6O19} units. Compound 1 exhibits significant magnetic anisotropy and excellent water solubility and stability. The findings suggest a new, all-inorganic polynulear Mn-based structural paradigm for aqueous solution chemistry and magnetic materials.

Theoretical exploration of single-molecule magnetic and single-molecule toroic behaviors in peroxide-bridged double-triangular {MII3LnIII3} (M = Ni, Cu and Zn; Ln = Gd, Tb and Dy) complexes. Abstract
Detailed state-of-the-art ab initio and density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been undertaken to understand both Single-Molecule Magnetic (SMM) and Single-Molecule Toroic (SMT) behaviors of fascinating 3d-4f {M3Ln3} triangular complexes having the molecular formula [MII3LnIII3(O2)L3(PyCO2)3](OH)2(ClO4)2·8H2O (with M = Zn; Ln = Dy (1), Tb (2) & Gd (3) and M = Cu; Ln = Dy (4), Tb (5) & Gd (6)) and [Ni3Ln3(H2O)3(mpko)9(O2)(NO3)3](ClO4)·3CH3OH·3CH3CN (Ln = Dy (7), Tb (8), and Gd (9)) [mpkoH = 1-(pyrazin-2-yl)ethanone oxime]. All these complexes possess a peroxide ligand that bridges the {LnIII3} triangle in a μ3-η3:η3 fashion and the oxygen atoms/oxime of co-ligands that connect each MII ion to the {LnIII3} triangle. Through our computational studies, we tried to find the key role of the peroxide bridge and how it affects the SMM and SMT behavior of these complexes. Primarily, ab initio Complete Active Space Self-Consistent Field (CASSCF) SINGLE_ANISO + RASSI-SO + POLY_ANISO calculations were performed on 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, and 8 to study the anisotropic behavior of each Ln(III) ion, to derive the magnetic relaxation mechanism and to calculate the LnIII-LnIII and CuII/NiII-LnIII magnetic coupling constants. DFT calculations were also performed to validate these exchange interactions (J) by computing the GdIII-GdIII and CuII/NiII-GdIII interactions in 3, 6, and 9. Our calculations explained the experimental magnetic relaxation processes and the magnetic exchange interactions for all the complexes, which also strongly imply that the peroxide bridge plays a role in the SMM behavior observed in these systems. On the other hand, this peroxide bridge does not support the SMT behavior. To investigate the effect of bridging ions in {M3Ln3} systems, we modeled a {ZnII3DyIII3} complex (1a) with a hydroxide ion replacing the bridged peroxide ion in complex 1 and considered a hydroxide-bridged {CoIII3DyIII3} complex (10) having the formula [Co3Dy3(OH)4(OOCCMe3)6(teaH)3(H2O)3](NO3)2·H2O. We discovered that as compared to the LoProp charges of the peroxide ion, the greater negative charges on the bridging hydroxide ion reduce quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) effects, enabling more desirable SMM characteristics and also leading to good SMT behavior.

Abstract
Three new hetero-metallic CuII-LnIII complexes [(CuL)Gd(NO3)3(CH3OH)]n (1), [(CuL)Tb(NO3)3(H2O)]·[CuL] (2) and [(CuL)Dy(NO3)3(H2O)]·[CuL] (3) have been synthesized using a mono-nuclear Cu(II) complex, [CuL], of an unsymmetrically di-condensed N2O3 donor Schiff base ligand, N-(3-methoxysalicylidene)-N-(salicylidene)-1,2-ethylenediamine (H2L). Single crystal X-ray crystallography revealed that complex 1 is a nitrate bridged 1D chain of dinuclear Cu(II)-Gd(III) units whereas in 2 and 3, the dinuclear Cu(II)-Ln(III) units are co-crystallized with a [CuL] unit. The Ln(III) centers are nine coordinated with the geometry of a spherical capped square antiprism for Gd and spherical tricapped trigonal prism for Tb and Dy. The geometry of the Cu(II) center is distorted octahedral for complex 1 and distorted square planar for complexes 2 and 3. Temperature-dependent molar magnetic susceptibility measurements in 1-3 revealed the presence of overall ferromagnetic coupling between the Cu(II) and Ln(III) centers. Notably, field induced single-molecule magnet behavior was witnessed in the Tb(III) derivative (2). The ab initio calculations indicated that upon application of an external magnetic field, the tunneling in the ground state of complex 2 gets reduced and thereby field-induced SMM behaviour is observed. Besides, in the case of complex 1, BS-DFT calculations were carried out to gain further insights into the magnetic exchange coupling interactions between the Cu(II) and Gd(III) centers.

Abstract
To study the effect of diamagnetic ions on magnetic interactions, utilizing a compartmental ligand (Z)-2-(hydroxymethyl)-4-methyl-6-((quinolin-8-ylimino)methyl)phenol (LH2), two different series of ZnII-LnIII complexes, namely the trinuclear series of [DyZn2(L)2(μ2-OAc)2(CH3OH)2]·NO3·MeOH (1), [TbZn2(L)2(μ2-OAc)2(CH3OH)2]·NO3·5MeOH·H2O (2), and [GdZn2(L)2(μ2-OAc)2(CH3OH)2]·NO3·MeOH·CHCl3 (3) and the tetranuclear series of [Dy2Zn2(LH)4(NO3)4(μ2OAc)]·NO3·MeOH·H2O (4), [Tb2Zn2(LH)4(NO3)4(μ2-OAc)]·NO3·MeOH·2H2O (5), and [Gd2Zn2(LH)4(NO3)4(μ2-OAc)]·NO3·MeOH·2H2O (6), were synthesized. Trinuclear ZnII-LnIII complexes 1-3 consist of one LnIII ion sandwiched between two peripheral ZnII ions forming a bent type ZnII-DyIII-ZnII array with an angle of 110.64°. Tetranuclear ZnII-LnIII complexes 4-6 are basically a combination of two dinuclear moieties of [LnZn(LH)2(NO3)2]+ connected by one bidentate bridging acetate ion in μ2-OAc coordination mode. The detailed magnetic analysis reveals that complexes 1 and 4 are single molecule magnets having energy barriers of 34.98 K and 46.71 K with relaxation times (τ0) of 5.05 × 10-4 s and 5.24 × 10-4 s, respectively. Ab initio calculations were employed to analyze the magnetic anisotropy and magnetic exchange interaction between the ZnII and LnIII centers with the aim of gaining better insights into the magnetic dynamics of complexes 1-6.

Abstract
The first use of the Schiff base chelate N-naphthalidene-o-aminophenol (naphH2 ) in Co/Ln chemistry has afforded a family of isostructural [CoIII 2 LnIII (OMe)2 (naph)2 (O2 CMe)3 (MeOH)2 ] (Ln=Tb, Dy and Er) complexes, revealing a rare {CoIII 2 Ln(μ3 -OMe)}8+ triangular core composed of two diamagnetic CoIII ions and a 4f-ion with slightly distorted square antiprismatic geometry. Alternating current (ac) magnetic susceptibility studies revealed that {Co2 Dy}, and its magnetic diluted analogue {Co2 Dy0.05 Y0.95 }, behave as mononuclear single-molecule magnets (SMMs) with similar energy barriers for the magnetization reversal, Ueff , of ~85-90 K. SMM properties were also detected for {Co2 Er}, with the compound exhibiting a Ueff of 18.7 K under an applied magnetic field of 800 Oe. To interpret the experimental magnetic results, ab initio CASSCF/RASSI-SO and DFT calculations were performed as a means of exploring the single-ion characteristics of LnIII ions and comprehend the role of the diamagnetic CoIII ions in the magnetization relaxation of the three heterometallic compounds.

Abstract
In this study, a new method for the synthesis of heterometallic 3d-4f alkoxides by the direct reaction of metallic lanthanides (La, Pr, Nd, Gd) with MCl2 (M = Mn, Ni, Co) in 2-methoxyethanol was developed. The method was applied to the synthesis of the heterometallic oxo-alkoxide clusters [Ln4Mn2(μ6-O)(μ3-OR)8(HOR)xCl6] (Ln = La (1), Nd (2), Gd (3); x = 0, 2, 4); [Pr4M2(μ6-O)(μ3-OR)8(HOR)xCl6] (M = Co (4), Ni (5); x = 2, 4); and [Ln4Mn2(μ3-OH)2(μ3-OR)4(μ-OR)4(μ-Cl)2(HOR)4Cl6] (Ln = La (11) and Pr (12)). Mechanistic investigation led to the isolation of the homo- and heterometallic intermediates [Pr(μ-OR)(μ-Cl)(HOR)Cl]n (6), [Co4(μ3-OR)4(HOR)4Cl4] (7), [Ni4(μ3-OR)4(HOEt)4Cl4] (8), [Mn4(μ3-OR)4(HOR)2(HOEt)2Cl4] (9), and [Nd(HOR)4Cl][CoCl4] (10). In the presence of an external M(II) source at 1100 °C, 1-4 and 12 were selectively converted into binary metal oxide nanomaterials with trigonal or orthorhombic perovskite structures, i.e., LaMnO3, GdMnO3, NdMnO3, Pr0.9MnO3, and PrCoO3. Compound 5 decomposed into a mixture of homo- and heterometallic oxides. The method presented provides a valuable platform for the preparation of advanced heterometallic oxide materials with promising magnetic, luminescence, and/or catalytic applications.

Abstract
A stable 3d-4f heterometallic cluster, namely, {Dy4Ni5L10(NO3)4(CO3)4(CH3OH)2}·CH3CN (Dy4Ni5, HL = 8-hydroxyquinoline), has been solvothermally synthesized and structurally characterized. The compound exhibits an interesting structure in which a tetrahedron based on 4f ions interpenetrates with a square pyramid based on 3d ions. Besides, a unique intermolecular interaction was found in Dy4Ni5, giving rise to its high stability not only when it is in the solid state but also when it dissolves in organic solvents. In addition, the magnetic behavior of solid Dy4Ni5 and the magneto-optical activity of the Dy4Ni5 solution were also studied.

Two air-stable Co(III)-Co(II) mixed-valence complexes of molecular formulas [CoIICoIII(L)(DMAP)3(CH3COO)]·H2O·CH3OH (1) and [CoIICoIII(L)(4-Pyrrol)3 (CH3COO)]·0.5CH2Cl2 (2) (H4L = 1,3-bis-(5-methyl pyrazole-3-carboxamide) propane; DMAP = 4-dimethylaminopyridine; and 4-Pyrrol = 4-pyrrolidinopyridine) were synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, high-field electron paramagnetic resonance (HFEPR) spectroscopy, and magnetic measurements. Both complexes possess one five-coordinated paramagnetic Co(II) ion and one six-coordinated Co(III) ion with octahedral geometry. Direct-current magnetic susceptibility and magnetization measurements show the easy-axis magnetic anisotropy that is also confirmed by low-temperature HFEPR measurements and theoretical calculations. Frequency- and temperature-dependent alternating-current magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal their field-assisted slow magnetic relaxation, which is a characteristic behavior of single-molecule magnets (SMMs), caused by the individual Co(II) ion. The effective energy barrier of complex 1 (49.2 cm-1) is significantly higher than those of the other dinuclear Co(III)-Co(II) SMMs. This work hence presents the first instance of the dinuclear Co(III)-Co(II) single-molecule magnets with a five-coordinated environment around the Co(II) ion.

Abstract
Four cobalt(II) complexes, [Co(L1)2(NCX)2(MeOH)2] (X = S (1), Se (2)) and {[Co(L2)2(NCX)2]}n (X = S (3), Se (4)) (L1 = 2,5dipyridyl-3,4,-ethylenedioxylthiophene and L2 = 2,5diethynylpyridinyl-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), were synthesized by incorporating ethylenedioxythiophene based redox-active luminescence ligands. All these complexes have been well characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, spectroscopic and magnetic investigations. Magneto-structural studies showed that 1 and 2 adopt a mononuclear structure with CoN4O2 octahedral coordination geometry while 3 and 4 have a 2D [4 x 4] rhombic grid coordination networks (CNs) where each cobalt(II) center is in a CoN6 octahedral coordination environment. Static magnetic measurements reveal that all four complexes displayed a high spin (HS) (S = 3/2) state between 2 and 280 K which was further confirmed by X-band and Q-band EPR studies. Remarkably, along with the molecular dimensionality (0D and 2D) the modification in the axial coligands lead to a significant difference in the dynamic magnetic properties of the monomers and CNs at low temperatures. All complexes display slow magnetic relaxation behavior under an external dc magnetic field. For the complexes with NCS- as coligand observed higher energy barrier for spin reversal in comparison to the complexes with NCSe- as coligand, while mononuclear complex 1 exhibited a higher energy barrier than that of CN 3. Theoretical calculations at the DFT and CASSCF level of theory have been performed to get more insight into the electronic structure and magnetic properties of all four complexes.

Abstract
A series of 4d-4f {RuIII2DyIII2} and {RuIII2GdIII2} 'butterfly' (rhombohedral) complexes have been synthesized and characterized and their magnetic properties investigated. Earlier, we have reported the first 4d/4f SMM - [RuIII2DyIII2(OMe)2(O2CPh)4(mdea)2(NO3)2] (1Dy) with a Ueff value of 10.7 cm-1. As the structural distortion around the DyIII centres and the RuIII⋯DyIII exchange interactions are key to enhancing the anisotropy, in this work we have synthesised three more {Ru2Dy2} butterfly complexes where structural alteration around the DyIII centres and alterations to the bridging groups are performed with an aim to improve the magnetic properties. The new complexes reported here are [Ru2Dy2(OMe)2(O2C(4-Me-Ph)4(mdea)2(MeOH)4], 2Dy, [Ru2Dy2(OMe)2(O2C(2-Cl,4,5-F-Ph)4(mdea)2(NO3)2], 3Dy, and an acac derivative [Ru2Dy2(OMe)2(acac)4(NO3)2(edea)2], 4Dy, where acac- = acetylacetonate, edea2- = N-ethyldiethanolamine dianion. Complex 2Dy describes alteration in the DyIII centers, while complexes 3Dy and 4Dy are aimed to alter the RuIII⋯DyIII exchange pathways. To ascertain the 4d-4f exchange, the Gd-analogues of 1Dy and 4Dy were synthesised [Ru2Gd2(OMe)2(O2CPh)4(mdea)2(NO3)2], 1Gd, [Ru2Gd2(OMe)2(acac)4(NO3)2(edea)2], 4Gd. Both ac and dc susceptibility studies were performed on all these complexes, and out-of-phase signals were observed for 3Dy in zero-field while 2Dy and 4Dy show out-of-phase signals in the presence of an applied field. Complex 3Dy reveals a barrier height Ueff of 45 K. To understand the difference in the magnetic dynamic behavior compared to our earlier reported {RuIII2DyIII2} analogue, detailed theoretical calculations based on ab initio CASSCF/RASSI-SO calculations have been performed. Calculations reveal that the JRu⋯Dy value varies from -1.8 cm-1 (4Dy) to -2.4 cm-1 (3Dy). These values are also affirmed by DFT calculations performed on the corresponding GdIII analogues. The origin of the largest barrier and observation of slow magnetic relaxation in 3Dy is routed back to the stronger single-ion anisotropy and stronger JRu⋯Dy exchange which quenches the QTM effects more efficiently. This study thus paves the way forward to tune local structure around the LnIII center and the exchange pathway to enhance the SMM characteristics in other {3d-4f}/{4d-4f} SMMs.

Abstract
Molecular magnets are a relatively new class of purely organic or metallo-organic materials, showing magnetism even without an external magnetic field. This interdisciplinary field between chemistry and physics has been gaining increased interest since the 1990s. While bulk molecular magnets are usually hard to build because of their molecular structures, low-dimensional molecular magnets are often easier to construct, down to dot-like (zero-dimensional) structures, which are investigated by different scanning probe technologies. On these scales, new effects such as superparamagnetic behavior or coherent switching during magnetization reversal can be recognized. Here, we give an overview of the recent advances in molecular nanomagnets, starting with single-molecule magnets (0D), typically based on Mn12, Fe8, or Mn4, going further to single-chain magnets (1D) and finally higher-dimensional molecular nanomagnets. This review does not aim to give a comprehensive overview of all research fields dealing with molecular nanomagnets, but instead aims at pointing out diverse possible materials and effects in order to stimulate new research in this broad field of nanomagnetism.

Abstract
The reaction of a bulky acetyl acetone ligand 1,3-dimesitylpropane-1,3-dione (MesacacH) with hydrated lanthanide chlorides in the presence of tetramethylammonium hydroxide afforded a new family of neutral mononuclear LnIII complexes [Ln(Mesacac)3(DMF)] (Ln = Dy (1); Tb (2); Y0.91Dy0.09 (3); and Er (4)). The molecular structures of these complexes were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The coordination geometries of the LnIII centre were analysed by SHAPE analysis which revealed a capped octahedral geometry in 1-4. Photoluminescence studies showed ligand-sensitized green emissions for 2 with an appreciable quantum yield of 0.83%. Static (dc) and dynamic (ac) magnetic studies of complexes 1 and 3 were performed. The dynamic magnetic study revealed that complex 1 exhibits zero-field slow relaxation of the magnetization without showing a clear maximum in the out-of-phase ac susceptibility plots. However, magnetic dilution of 1 with the YIII metal ion (complex 3) and/or the application of a dc magnetic field induces a strong frequency dependence of the ac susceptibility signals with χ''M peaks in the 3-10 K temperature range, thus supporting field-induced SMM behaviour of 1. The relaxation process takes place through a combination of the Orbach and Raman mechanisms. The fitting of the temperature dependence of the relaxation time to the equation τ-1 = τ0-1 exp(-Ueff/kBT) + BTn, allows the extraction of the effective energy barrier Ueff/kB = 70 K (48.7 cm-1) and pre-exponential parameter of τ0 = 2.7 × 10-7 s for the Orbach mechanism (first term) and the parameters B = 0.04 s-1 K-n and n = 6.11, for the Raman mechanism (second term).

Abstract
We hereby report a dinuclear Dy(iii) complex, [Dy(LH3)Cl2]2·2Et2O (1) (LH4 = 2,3-dihydroxybenzylidene)-2-(hydroxyimino)propanehydrazide where both the metal centres are in a pentagonal bipyramidal (PBP) geometry with the axial positions being occupied by negatively charged Cl- ions. The complex as well as it's 10% diluted analogue (110) do not show zero-field SMM behaviour. However, in the presence of small optimum dc fields the slow relaxation of magnetization was displayed. The effective energy barrier for 110 at 800 Oe of applied field was extracted as 83(17) K with τ0 = 2(4) × 10-12 s. Through a combined experimental and ab initio electronic structure calculations studies we have thoroughly analysed the role of the ligand field around the Dy(iii), present in pentagonal bipyramidal geometry, in contributing to the slow relaxation of magnetization.

Abstract
A pair of 3-methoxysalicylhydrazone-based homochiral ligands constructed chiral trinuclear and pentanuclear complexes with LaIII and DyIII ions, respectively, which indicates that the radii controlled the self-assembled structures. Chiral transfer during the self-assembly processes was confirmed by crystal structure analysis and CD spectroscopy. Then, magnetic investigations demonstrated that the chiral Dy5 complexes exhibited typical single-molecule magnet behavior.

Abstract
Site-specific coordination ligands, also known as compartmental ligands, have been used for the preparation of heterometallic complexes. These ligands, by virtue of possessing specific binding sites, can encapsulate different metal ions in their coordination pockets. Such compartmental ligands have been widely used for the preparation of heterometallic 3d/4f complexes which have applications in molecular magnetism. This Review summarizes our efforts in the use of ferrocene-based compartmental ligands for the preparation of heterometallic 3d/4f complexes, some of which are single-molecule or single-ion magnets.

Abstract
A ligand skeleton combining a 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) binding site and one or two heptadentate N3O4 aminocarboxylate binding sites, connected via alkyne spacers to the phen C3 or C3/C8 positions, has been used to prepare a range of heteronuclear Ru·M and Ru·M2 complexes which have been evaluated for their cell imaging, relaxivity, and photophysical properties. In all cases the phen unit is bound to a {Ru(bipy)2}2+ unit to give a phosphorescent {Ru(bipy)2(phen)}2+ luminophore, and the pendant aminocarboxylate sites are occupied by a secondary metal ion M which is either a lanthanide [Gd(iii), Nd(iii), Yb(iii)] or another d-block ion [Zn(ii), Mn(ii)]. When M = Gd(iii) or Mn(ii) these ions provide the complexes with a high relaxivity for water; in the case of Ru·Gd and Ru·Gd2 the combination of high water relaxivity and 3MLCT phosphorescence from the Ru(ii) unit provides the possibility of two different types of imaging modality in a single molecular probe. In the case of Ru·Mn and Ru·Mn2 the Ru(ii)-based phosphorescence is substantially reduced compared to the control complexes Ru·Zn and Ru·Zn2 due to the quenching effect of the Mn(ii) centres. Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy studies on Ru·Mn (and Ru·Zn as a non-quenched control) reveal the occurrence of fast (<1 ns) PET in Ru·Mn, from the Mn(ii) ion to the Ru(ii)-based 3MLCT state, i.e. MnII-(phen˙-)-RuIII → MnIII-(phen˙-)-RuII; the resulting MnIII-(phen˙-) state decays with τ ≈ 5 ns and is non-luminescent. This occurs in conformers when an ET pathway is facilitated by a planar, conjugated bridging ligand conformation connecting the two units across the alkyne bridge but does not occur in conformers where the two units are electronically decoupled by a twisted conformation of the bridging ligand. Computational studies (DFT) on Ru·Mn confirmed both the occurrence of the PET quenching pathway and its dependence on molecular conformation. In the complexes Ru·Ln and Ru·Ln2 (Ln = Nd, Yb), sensitised near-infrared luminescence from Nd(iii) or Yb(iii) is observed following photoinduced energy-transfer from the Ru(ii) core, with Ru → Nd energy-transfer being faster than Ru → Yb energy-transfer due to the higher density of energy-accepting states on Nd(iii).

Abstract
Two tetranuclear compounds with a cubane-like structure were synthesized from a one-pot reaction between NiII and 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedione (Hdpm) for 1 or 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-phenyl-1,3-butanedione (Hbta) for 2 in the presence of sodium methoxide. The crystal structures of both compounds have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and their magnetic properties have been studied by SQUID magnetometry as well as by high-field electron paramagnetic resonance (HFEPR) spectroscopy. For 1, the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility can be fitted by taking into account Ni···Ni ferromagnetic interactions, which leads to an S = 4 ground-state spin. For 2, both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions are present. However, the latter are dominant, which also leads to an S = 4 ground-state spin, in good agreement with the HFEPR study.

Abstract
We report an investigation on the synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of a series of heteroleptic Zn2+/Ln3+ complexes of the general formula [ZnLClLn(o-van)(H2O)(NO3)]·H2O (H2L = N,N'-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)-1,2-diaminoethane; o-van = o-vanillinate; Ln = Tb (1), Dy (2), Er (3)). All the compounds exhibit a slow relaxation of their magnetization and the dysprosium analogue shows one of the highest anisotropic barriers for ZnDy complexes.

Abstract
Four new dinuclear complexes, [Co(μ-L)(μ-CCl3COO)Y(NO3)2]·2CHCl3·CH3CN·2H2O (1), [Co(μ-L)(μ-CH3COO)Y(NO3)2]·CH3CN (2), [Co(μ-L)(μ-PhCOO)Y(NO3)2]·3CH3CN·2H2O (3), and [Co(μ-L)(μ-tBuCOO)Y(NO3)2]·CHCl3·2H2O (4), having a CoIIYIII core, have been synthesized by employing a ferrocene based compartmental ligand which was synthesized by the reaction of diacetyl ferrocene with hydrazine hydrate followed by a condensation reaction with o-vanillin. A general synthetic protocol was employed to synthesize complexes 1-4, where the metallic core was kept the same with changing the bridging carboxylate groups. In all the complexes, the main structural motif is kept similar by only slightly varying the substitution on the bridging acetate groups. This variation has resulted in a small but subtle influence on the magnetic relaxation of all these four compounds. Ab initio CASSCF/NEVPT2 calculations were carried out to assess the effect of the different substitutions of the bridging ligands on the magnetic anisotropy parameters and on orbital arrangements. Ab initio calculations yield a very large positive D value, which is consistent with the geometry around the CoII ion and easy plane anisotropy (gxx, gyy > gzz), with the order of the calculated D in the range of 72.4 to 91.7 cm-1 being estimated in this set of complexes. To ascertain the sign of zero-field splitting in these complexes, EPR spectra were recorded, which support the sign of D values estimated from ab initio calculations.

Abstract
Heterometallic Ln-Pt complexes, with the formula [Ln2Pt3(H2O)2(SAc)12] (Ln = Ho(1), Er(2); SAc = thioacetate), were synthesized. From natural bond orbital (NBO) and local orbital locator (LOL) analyses and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements, it was clear that the Ln-Pt interactions or electron polarization occurred. Butterfly-type hysteresis was observed for both 1 and 2. 1 and 2 underwent field-induced slow magnetic relaxation up to 4 K. These magnetic properties were induced by Ln-Pt electron polarization.

Mechanism of magnetisation relaxation in {MIII2DyIII2} (M = Cr, Mn, Fe, Al) "Butterfly" complexes: how important are the transition metal ions here? Chem Sci 2019; 10:5528-5538. Abstract
We describe the synthesis, characterisation and magnetic studies of four tetranuclear, isostructural "butterfly" heterometallic complexes: [MIII2LnIII2(μ3-OH)2(p-Me-PhCO2)6(L)2] (H2L = 2,2'-((pyridin-2-ylmethyl)azanediyl)bis(ethan-1-ol), M = Cr, Ln = Dy (1), Y (2), M = Mn, Ln = Dy (3), Y (4)), which extend our previous study on the analogous 5 {Fe2Dy2}, 6 {Fe2Y2} and 7 {Al2Dy2} compounds. We also present data on the yttrium diluted 7 {Al2Dy2}: 8 {Al2Dy0.18Y1.82}. Compounds dc and ac magnetic susceptibility data reveal single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour for complex 3 {Mn2Dy2}, in the absence of an external magnetic field, with an anisotropy barrier U eff of 19.2 K, while complex 1 {Cr2Dy2}, shows no ac signals even under applied dc field, indicating absence of SMM behaviour. The diluted sample 8 {Al2Dy0.18Y1.82} shows field induced SMM behaviour with an anisotropy barrier U eff of 69.3 K. Furthermore, the theoretical magnetic properties of [MIII2LnIII2(μ3-OH)2(p-Me-PhCO2)6(L)2] (M = Cr, 1 or Mn, 3) and their isostructural complexes: [MIII2DyIII2(μ3-OH)2(p-Me-PhCO2)6(L)2] (M = Fe, 5 or Al, 7) are discussed and compared. To understand the experimental observations for this family, DFT and ab initio CASSCF + RASSI-SO calculations were performed. The experimental and theoretical calculations suggest that altering the 3dIII ions can affect the single-ion properties and the nature and the magnitude of the 3dIII-3dIII, 3dIII-DyIII and DyIII-DyIII magnetic coupling, thus quenching the quantum tunneling of magnetisation (QTM) significantly, thereby improving the SMM properties within this motif. This is the first systematic study looking at variation and therefore role of trivalent transition metal ions, as well as the diamgnetic AlIII ion, on slow relaxation of magnetisation within a series of isostructural 3d-4f butterfly compounds.
