Abstract
In recent years, organic-inorganic hybrid materials have demonstrated exceptional performance in nonlinear optics, attracting widespread attention. However, there are relatively few examples of coordination compounds synthesized with Cu as the metal center that exhibit excellent nonlinear optical properties. In this study, we successfully synthesized a pair of enantiomers named R/S-Cu2I2 by reacting chiral ligands with CuI. The crystal structure reveals a one-dimensional copper-iodide chain structure built by Cu2I2 clusters, and its ordered arrangement in space provides not only a strong second harmonic generation (SHG) signal (1.24 × KDP) but also a large birefringence (0.15@1064 nm). Under excitation at 395 nm, the crystals exhibit red fluorescence peaked at 675 nm. The CD spectra of R/S-Cu2I2 show a distinct mirror-symmetric Cotton effect, and their CPL signals are corresponding and opposite in the emission range, with a maximum glum of approximately ±2.5 × 10-3. Theoretical calculations using density functional theory were also carried out to enhance our understanding of the correlation between their structures and optical properties.

Abstract
In the present work, we have successfully obtained two new UV antimony-based sulfates, NH4Sb(SO4)2 and Ca2Sb2O(SO4)4, by a conventional hydrothermal method. Interestingly, both compounds share similar structural building blocks, such as SbO4 seesaws and SO4 tetrahedra, yet they endow discrepant birefringence values measured at 546 nm with values of 0.150 and 0.114, respectively, owing to the different distortions of the SbO4 groups with SCALP electrons. Moreover, both compounds display large band gaps (4.32 and 4.43 eV, respectively), so they can be used as short-wavelength UV birefringent materials. Moreover, NH4Sb(SO4)2 is a noncentrosymmetric compound, showing a frequency doubling effect of 0.2 × KDP. Detailed structural analyses and calculations confirm the source of superior optical performance and the reasons for the different birefringence of the two compounds. This work provides ideas for the following discovery of antimony-based optical materials with excellent properties.

Abstract
Nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals are very important for laser technology, but the performances of available NLO crystals are still insufficient for increasing demand. Recently, the exploration of new NLO crystals in non-π-conjugated systems with the heteroatomic tetrahedra is attracting a lot of interest. In this work, we systematically explore the metal sulfamates containing [NH2SO3] groups and four metal sulfamates, namely, Ca(NH2SO3)2·4H2O, Ca(NH2SO3)2·H2O, Pb(NH2SO3)2·H2O, and Pb(NH2SO3)2 were synthesized by aqueous solution and hydrothermal methods. Notably, these metal sulfamates exhibit different crystal structures and optical properties owing to the diverse arrangement of the functional groups in their structures. In addition, due to hydrogen bond regulation, the centrosymmetric (CS) compound Ca(NH2SO3)2·4H2O can transform into noncentrosymmetric (NCS) Ca(NH2SO3)2·H2O, leading to NLO activity. Experimental characterizations and theoretical analysis reveal that these metal sulfamates are ultraviolet transparent and suitable for developing new NLO materials.

Abstract
Oxychalcogenides have gained widespread attention as promising infrared nonlinear optical (IR-NLO) candidates. However, high-performance oxychalcogenides have rarely been reported in the ultraviolet (UV) region owing to the low energy gaps (Eg < 4.0 eV). Herein, two non-centrosymmetric (NCS) oxychalcogenides with one-dimensional (1D) chain structures and wide Eg (>4.3 eV), namely, AEGeOS2 (AE = Sr and Ba), have been discovered by combined experiments and theory calculations as a new source of UV-NLO materials. Significantly, they exhibit excellent comprehensive performance comparable to the commercial UV-NLO material KH2PO4 (KDP), including large phase-matching ranges (>380 nm), sufficient second harmonic generation intensities (0.7-1.1 × KDP), high laser-induced damage thresholds (1.2 × KDP), wide transparent regions (0.26-12.2 μm), and good thermal stability (up to 1100 K). Moreover, systematic structure-activity relationship analysis illustrates that the 1D homochiral helical [GeOS2]2- chains composed of heteroanionic [GeS2O2] units make major contribution to the desirable UV-NLO performance. This work makes the two compounds shine out as new energy in the UV-NLO field and offers a new perspective for the exploration of structure-driven functional oxychalcogenides.

Abstract
The first examples of zirconium fluoroantimonites, namely, K3ZrF4(SbF4)(SbF5) and K8(ZrF6)(Sb2Zr2F20), have been successfully synthesized by facial hydrothermal reactions. K3ZrF4(SbF4)(SbF5) features a unique 1D (ZrSb2F13)3- double-chain structure, while K8(ZrF6)(Sb2Zr2F20) displays a special 0D construction composed of Zr2Sb2F20 tetranuclear clusters and isolated ZrF6 octahedra. The two fluorides can exhibit a broad transparency range with almost no absorption peaks from ultraviolet to near-IR. For K8(ZrF6)(Sb2Zr2F20), a phase transformation was found before decomposition. The band structures, density of states, and linear-optical properties for the title compounds were also obtained.

Abstract
Discovering novel sulfate optical materials with strong second-harmonic generation (SHG) and large birefringence is confronted by a great challenge attributed to the intrinsically weak polarizability and optical anisotropy of tetrahedral SO4 groups. Herein, two superior-performing sulfate optical materials, namely, noncentrosymmetric Hg3 O2 SO4 and centrosymmetric CsHgClSO4 ⋅ H2 O, have been successfully synthesized through the introduction of a highly polarizable d10 metal cation, Hg2+ . The unique component layers in the reported compounds, [Hg3 O2 SO4 ]∞ layers in Hg3 O2 SO4 and [HgClSO4 (H2 O)] ∞ - layers in CsHgClSO4 ⋅ H2 O, induce enlarged birefringence in each sulfate. Remarkably, Hg3 O2 SO4 exhibits a very large SHG response (14 times that of KH2 PO4 ), which is the strongest efficiency among all the reported nonlinear optical sulfates. Detailed theoretical calculations confirm that the employment of highly polarizable Hg2+ is an effective strategy to design superior optical materials with large birefringence and strong SHG response.

Abstract
Using the homovalent cation substitution strategy, a new sulfate, Cs2Ca3(SO4)4, was successfully prepared using the spontaneous crystallization technique. A single-crystal structure measurement suggested that it crystallizes in space group P21/c, with lattice parameters and molecules per unit cell of a = 9.9153(8), b = 9.3760(6), c = 9.8044(9), β = 118.365(3)°, V = 802.04(11), and Z = 2. In the structure of Cs2Ca3(SO4)4, CaO6 octahedra and SO4 tetrahedra are interconnected via a corner-sharing mode to form a three-dimensional framework comprising large cavities filled with Cs+ cations. First-principles calculations and diffuse reflectance spectra indicated that Cs2Ca3(SO4)4 has a large energy band gap. Moreover, structural comparisons with similar compounds were conducted to explain the role of cations in tuning structural symmetry and birefringence. This paper helps to explain the size effect of cations on structural evolution.

Abstract
Introducing stereochemically active lone-pair Sb3+ cations into sulfates, two three-dimensional (3D) antimony-sulfates, Sb4O5SO4 (1) and Sb4O(SO4)(OH)2 (2), were achieved under moderate hydrothermal conditions. Both structures are constructed by tetranuclear-{Sb4}-clusters-based layers and SO4 tetrahedra. However, owing to the different packing patterns of the layers, they display different characteristics: 1 exhibits a centrosymmetric structure while 2 possesses a noncentrosymmetric structure. UV-vis spectra show that they possess wide band gaps. Sb4O(SO4)(OH)2 is nonlinear optical (NLO) active with a second-harmonic generation (SHG) response of ∼1.2 times of KH2PO4, together with the phase-matchable capacity, endowing it a promising UV NLO material. The first-principle calculations were performed to elucidate the structure-property relationships. The results indicate that the lone pair stereoactivity of Sb3+ provides the large contribution to the macroscopic SHG effect.

Abstract
Two tellurium(IV)-based sulfate nonlinear optical (NLO) materials, Te2O3(SO4) and Te(OH)3(SO4)·H3O, were successfully synthesized via the mild hydrothermal method. Te2O3SO4 has a two-dimensional (2D) structure consisting of [Te6O12]∞ layers as well as [SO4] groups. Te(OH)3(SO4)·H3O features a simple 0D structure made up of an isolated [TeO3] pyramid and a [SO4] tetrahedra. Both of them are phase-matching materials and show remarkable powder second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiencies about 6 and 3 times that of KH2PO4 (KDP), respectively, for Te2O3SO4 and Te(OH)3(SO4)·H3O. Especially for Te(OH)3(SO4)·H3O, in addition to a large SHG response, it possesses a short UV cutoff edge (∼233 nm) as well as moderate birefringence (0.052@546.1 nm). Furthermore, theoretical calculations confirmed that their strong SHG effects are due to the synergistic effect of the [TeO3] pyramid and [SO4] tetrahedra.

Abstract
Birefringent materials are vital materials to modulate the polarization of light, and play a key role in plorization devices such as linear optical devices, optical communication devices, and fiber optic sensors. It is still a challenge to design excellent birefringent materials. Herein, we report an organic-inorganic hybrid oxalate birefringent material, (CN4H7)SbC2O4F2(H2O)0.5, by introducing organic delocalized π-conjugated [CN4H7]+ and [C2O4]2- groups, and stereochemical active inorganic SbO4F2 polyhedra. (CN4H7)SbC2O4F2(H2O)0.5 exhibits a large birefringence (Δn = 0.126@546 nm) that is almost equal to that of the well-known birefringent material α-BaB2O4. Theoretical calculations reveal that the distinguished birefringence should stem from the synergistic arrangement of π-conjugated [CN4H7]+ and [C2O4]2- planar groups, and highly distorted SbO4F2 polyhedra with a stereochemically active lone pair. The synergistic effect of π-conjugated systems and the lone pair electrons greatly boosts the birefringence, which is helpful for the development of high-performance birefringent materials.

Abstract
The series of alkali-metal tin chloride sulfates A3Sn2(SO4)3-xCl1+2x (A = K, Rb, Cs; x = 0, 1), K3Sn2(SO4)3Cl, Rb3Sn2(SO4)2Cl3, and Cs3Sn2(SO4)2Cl3, were successfully synthesized through an improved mild hydrothermal method. Interestingly, in addition to the cation size effect, the structure-directing effect of anions induces different symmetries in the three title compounds, with K3Sn2(SO4)3Cl being noncentrosymmetric, while Rb3Sn2(SO4)2Cl3 and Cs3Sn2(SO4)2Cl3 are centrosymmetric. Powder second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurements indicate that K3Sn2(SO4)3Cl is a nonlinear optical material that is type I phase matchable with a weak SHG response (0.1× KDP). Photoluminescence tests reveal that the three title compounds emit strong greenish yellow, orange, and salmon light, respectively, under UV excitation, indicating that they are promising inorganic solid fluorescent materials. Simultaneously, a detailed structural analysis of all the known tin(II) halide sulfates has been performed, which will guide the systematic exploration of high-performance tin(II)-based functional materials in the future.

Abstract
Materials capable of generating coherent short-wave (<300 nm) light have attracted extensive scientific and technical interest due to their wide utilization in laser research. In this study, a the rare-earth-metal sulfate NaCe(SO4)2(H2O) (NCSO) was synthesized through a hydrothermal method, while NaBi(SO4)2(H2O) (NBSO) was successfully obtained via a homovalent cation substitution of the parent compound NCSO under hydrothermal conditions. The space groups of crystalline NCSO and NBSO are P3121 and P3221, respectively. Both compounds have similar connectivities which feature a three-dimensional channel structure formed by asymmetric [CeO9]15-/[BiO9]15- tricapped trigonal prisms and distorted [SO4]2- tetrahedra. The introduction of Bi3+ with larger ionic radii and stereochemically active lone-pair electrons simultaneously enhanced the SHG effect and band gap of NBSO in comparison to its parent compound NCSO. In contrast to NCSO, which possesses a narrow energy band gap (2.46 eV), NBSO displays the largest energy band gap (4.54 eV) among the reported bismuth sulfate NLO materials. Powder frequency-doubling-effect measurements exhibit that NCSO and NBSO possess phase-matchable SHG responses of 0.2 × KDP and 0.38 × KDP at 1064 nm, respectively. Theoretical studies have been implemented to further elucidate the structure-performance relationships of the two compounds. Experimental and theoretical studies both demonstrate that NBSO may be a promising nonlinear material applied in the short-wavelength region.

Abstract
Birefringent materials play a key role in modulating the polarization of light and thus in optical communication as well as in laser techniques and science. Designing new, excellent birefringent materials remains a challenge. In this work, we designed and synthesized the first antimony(III) fluoride oxalate birefringent material, KSb2 C2 O4 F5 , by a combination of delocalized π-conjugated [C2 O4 ]2- groups, stereochemical active Sb3+ cations, and the most electronegative element, fluorine. The [C2 O4 ]2- groups are not in an optimal arrangement in the crystal structure of KSb2 C2 O4 F5 ; nonetheless, KSb2 C2 O4 F5 exhibits a large birefringence (Δn=0.170 at 546 nm) that is even better than that of the well-known commercial birefringent material α-BaB2 O4 , even though the latter features an optimal arrangement of π-conjugated [B3 O6 ]3- groups. Based on first-principles calculations, this prominent birefringence should be attributed to the alliance of planar π-conjugated [C2 O4 ]2- anions, highly distorted SbO2 F2 and SbOF3 polyhedra with a stereochemically active lone pair. The combination of lone-pair electrons and π-conjugated systems boosts the birefringence to a large extent and will help the development of high-performance birefringent materials.

Abstract
In their Correspondence, Sergey V. Krivovichev and Luca Bindi argue that the novel excellent nonlinear optical material antimony pyrophosphate, K2 Sb(P2 O7 )F, reported in our Research Article published in this journal belongs to the fresnoite Ba2 [TiO(Si2 O7 )] group and its structure is not novel in terms of either topology or local coordination geometry around Sb3+ cations. We clarify that the statements regarding structural features of our original paper are valid in context.

Abstract
Developing effective strategies to design novel, excellent birefringent materials has become an emerging challenge. Herein, we report a new UV nitrate birefringent material, CsHgNO3Cl2, which is an analogue of the known UV carbonate nonlinear optical crystal KCaCO3F. In CsHgNO3Cl2, a perfect layered structure was produced owing to the alliance of a planar π-conjugated anion NO3- and highly electropolarized Hg2+ cation. The optimized layered structure that is beneficial in enlarging the optical anisotropy induced a large birefringence (Δn = 0.145@546 nm) for CsHgNO3Cl2, even superior to that of the well-known commercial birefringent material α-BBO in the UV region. The strategy that the optimization of planar functional group arrangement is able to boost birefringence is expected to guide the development of high-performance birefringent materials in the future, especially in the field of UV.

Abstract
A novel noncentrosymmetric (NCS) metal-free formic-borate, (NH4)3[B(OH)3]2(COOH)3, has been discovered, which exhibits an infrequent graphite-like structure. The alliance of two types of π-conjugated planar anions BO33- and COOH- produced an optimized layered structure to maximize the anisotropic polarizability, resulting in an extremely large birefringence (0.156@546 nm), larger than that of the classical commercial UV birefringent material α-BBO (0.122@546 nm). This strategy that structural optimization could enhance birefringence will guide the discovery of large birefringence materials, especially in the UV region.

Abstract
Two new antimony fluoride sulfates named A6Sb4F12(SO4)3 (A = Rb, Cs) with unique crown-like clusters have been successfully synthesized by introducing Sb3+ with a stereochemically active lone pair in the sulfate system through a facile hydrothermal method. The structure regulation induced by the cation sizes results in the symmetry difference in these two title compounds, i.e., Rb6Sb4F12(SO4)3 crystallizing in the polar noncentrosymmetric (NCS) space group of P3 and Cs6Sb4F12(SO4)3 in the centrosymmetric (CS) space group of P1̅. Detailed characterizations, including XRD, thermal behaviors, optical properties, and the theoretical calculations, for these two compounds have been performed. The discovery of the unique crown-like clusters observed in A6Sb4F12(SO4)3 (A = Rb, Cs) enriches the diversity of structures for antimony sulfates systems. Simultaneously, a summary and comparison for all reported antimony halide sulfates has been made to illustrate the synergistic effect of the stoichiometric ratio and cation sizes on the macroscopic centricity and the framework structure, which will guide the systematical discovery of antimony(III)-based functional materials in future.

Abstract
Exploring novel functional materials via chemical substitution-oriented design is an emerging strategy. The method can be expanded to the discovery of high performance ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) solid state materials by a careful tuning of the substituted atoms. This minireview presents a brief introduction to chemical substitution-oriented design including single-site substitution, dual-site substitution, and multisite substitution. Several state-of-the-art UV NLO materials such as K3VO(O2)2CO3-type, KBe2BO3F2 (KBBF)-type, Ca5(PO4)3(OH)-type, and KTiOPO4 (KTP)-type phases successfully discovered by the chemical substitution method are discussed. A brief introduction to chemical substitution-oriented design to discover high performance ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) solid state materials is presented.![]()

Two-stage evolution from phosphate to sulfate of new KTP-type family members as UV nonlinear optical materials through chemical cosubstitution-oriented design. Dalton Trans 2020; 49:5276-5282. Abstract
KTiOPO4 (KTP) is a classic commercial nonlinear optical (NLO) crystal, but its narrow bandgap (3.52 eV) prevents its practical application in the ultraviolet (UV) region. Many trials to widen the narrow bandgap of KTP have failed in the past few decades. A chemical cosubstitution strategy was implemented to design new members of the KTP-type family as potential UV NLO materials. First, a novel centrosymmetric KTP-type compound NH4SbFPO4·H2O with a sharply enlarged bandgap (5.01 eV) was obtained through three-site aliovalent substitution. Second, the noncentrosymmetric NH4SbF2SO4 was synthesized by the introduction of more F- anions to destroy the crystal symmetry and SO42- to replace PO43- for balancing the charge in NH4SbFPO4·H2O, which realized the transformation from a visible phosphate system to solar blind UV sulfate system for KTP-type family NLO materials. The preliminary experimental results indicated that NH4SbF2SO4 is a promising solar blind UV NLO material. The first-principles calculations revealed that the sharply enlarged bandgap resulted from the substitution of the transition metal cations with the main group metal cations and the introduction of F- anions with high electronegativity.

Abstract
Mixed-anion compounds are among the most promising systems to design functional materials with enhanced properties. Among the phosphate-sulfate species, the [SO4]2- and [PO2F2]- tetrahedra are known and give rise to structural versatility. However, to date, the crystal structures of phosphate-sulfates with the coexistence of two distinct anion groups ([S2O7]2- and [PO2F2]-) in one compound are unknown. Here, a novel type of fluorooxophosphorsulfate, K4(PO2F2)2(S2O7) (KSPOF), is designed and synthesized via a high-temperature method in a closed system. The crystal structure is derived from single-crystal X-ray diffraction (C2/c, a = 13.000(10) Å, b = 7.5430(10) Å, c = 19.010(10) Å, β = 130.070(10)°, and Z = 4). It is the first fluorooxophosphorsulfate with mixed-anion building units ([S2O7]2- and [PO2F2]-) and a unique drum-like cluster was found, which enriches the diversity of structures for fluorooxophosphorsulfate systems. Furthermore, the theoretical calculations indicate that KSPOF possesses moderate birefringence, which mainly originates from the distorted [PO2F2]- tetrahedron.
