Iron hydroxyphosphate electro-Fenton catalyst for efficient removal of sulfamethoxazole and resource recycling into slow-release fertiliser ammonium ferrous phosphate

Although the electro-Fenton (EF) process is effective for wastewater treatment, recycling spent catalysts remain a major challenge. Therefore, we introduce a reuse strategy for spent catalysts where an iron hydroxyphosphate [Fe5(PO4)4(OH)3·2H2O] catalyst is utilized. Fe5(PO4)4(OH)3·2H2O obtained •OH and •O2- by activating in-situ produced H2O2, and the degradation rate of sulfamethoxazole reached 94.5% after 120 min and showed excellent stability (maintained above 90%) for 10 cycles. Finally, the used catalyst was converted into slow-release ammonium ferrous phosphate (NH4FePO4·H2O) fertiliser at a conversion rate of 85.6%. NH4FePO4·H2O significantly promoted plant and seed growth within 6 days, highlighting the contribution of the resource recycling of the spent catalyst. This study serves as a valuable reference for the efficient utilization of spent catalysts. This study successfully applied EF catalysts and explored the recycling of spent catalysts.

Penetration and translocation of functional inorganic nanomaterials into biological barriers

With excellent physicochemical properties, inorganic nanomaterials (INMs) have exhibited a series of attractive applications in biomedical fields. Biological barriers prevent successful delivery of nanomedicine in living systems that limits the development of nanomedicine especially for sufficient delivery of drugs and effective therapy. Numerous researches have focused on overcoming these biological barriers and homogeneity of organisms to enhance therapeutic efficacy, however, most of these strategies fail to resolve these challenges. In this review, we present the latest progress about how INMs interact with biological barriers and penetrate these barriers. We also summarize that both native structure and components of biological barriers and physicochemical properties of INMs contributed to the penetration capacity. Knowledge about the relationship between INMs structure and penetration capacity will guide the design and application of functional and efficient nanomedicine in the future.

Temperature-responsive iron nanozymes based on poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) with multi-enzyme activity

Iron (Fe)-based nanozymes are widely applied in the biomedical field due to their enzyme-like catalytic activity. Herein, Fe(ii)-based coordination polymer nanohydrogels (FeCPNGs) have been conveniently prepared as a new type of nanozyme by the chelation reaction between ferrous iron and polymer nanohydrogels. The P(VCL-co-NMAM) nanohydrogels prepared by a reflux precipitation polymerization method using N-vinylcaprolactam (VCL) and N-methylol acrylamide (NMAM) as monomers and N,N-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker were esterified using P2O5 and then chelated with Fe(ii) ions to form nanozymes with peroxidase and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. It was found by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) that the nanohydrogels prepared with a monomer concentration of 4% and mass ratio of 1 : 1 (VCL : NMAM) had more uniform particle size, better dispersion and a distinct temperature response. The results of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), DLS, TEM, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated the successful preparation of the esterified nanohydrogel and FeCPNGs. Of particular importance is that such FeCPNGs can functionally mimic two antioxidant enzymes (peroxidase and superoxide dismutase) by UV analysis of catalytic oxidation between 3,3,5,5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and H2O2 and the kit analysis of SOD-like activity.

A polypyrrole-coated eightfold-helical Wells-Dawson POM-based Cu-FKZ framework for enhanced colorimetric sensing

To explore a novel colorimetric biosensor with high sensibility and selectivity, a new Wells-Dawson-type polyoxometalate (POM)-based metal-organic framework (MOF) with an eightfold helix, [Cu₉(FKZ)₁₂(H₂O)₈][H₃P₂W₁₈O₆₂]₂·4H₂O (CuFKZP₂W₁₈) (HFKZ = 1-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-1,1-bis[(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)methyl] ethanol), was successfully synthesized; then, polypyrrole (PPy) was introduced to fabricate CuFKZP₂W₁₈/PPy(n) nanocomposites (n = 7%, 15%, 30%) via a facile in situ oxidation polymerization process. All the results indicate that CuFKZP₂W₁₈/PPy(15%) as a colorimetric biosensor exhibits lower limits of detection (0.07 μM towards H₂O₂ and 0.627 μM towards ascorbic acid), smaller K_m values (0.106 mM for H₂O₂ and 0.042 mM for o-phenylenediamine) and higher sensitivity (0.0227 1 μM^-1 towards H₂O₂ and 0.0025 1 μM^-1 to ascorbic acid) than most reported enzyme mimetics to the best of our knowledge.

Selective Functionalization Blended with Scaffold Conductivity in Graphene Acid Promotes H2O2 Electrochemical Sensing

The widespread industrial use of H₂O₂ has provoked great interest in the development of new and more efficient materials for its detection. Enzymatic electrochemical sensors have drawn particular attention, primarily because of their excellent selectivity. However, their high cost, instability, complex immobilization, and inherent tendency toward denaturation of the enzyme significantly limit their practical usefulness. Inspired by the powerful proton-catalyzed H₂O₂ reduction mechanism of peroxidases, we have developed a well-defined and densely functionalized carboxylic graphene derivative (graphene acid, GA) that serves as a proton source and conductive electrode for binding and detecting H₂O₂. An unprecedented H₂O₂ sensitivity of 525 μA cm^-2 mM^-1 is achieved by optimizing the balance between the carboxyl group content and scaffold conductivity of GA. Importantly, the GA sensor greatly outperforms all reported carbon-based H₂O₂ sensors and is superior to enzymatic ones because of its simple immobilization, low cost, and uncompromised sensitivity even after continuous operation for 7 days. In addition, GA-based sensing electrodes remain highly selective in the presence of interferents such as ascorbic acid, paracetamol, and glucose, as well as complex matrices such as milk. GA-based sensors thus have considerable potential for use in practical industrial sensing technologies.

A facile preparation of FePt-loaded few-layer MoS2 nanosheets nanocomposites (F-MoS2-FePt NCs) and their application for colorimetric detection of H2O2 in living cells

BACKGROUND

Rapid and sensitive detection of H2O2 especially endogenous H2O2 is of great importance for series of industries including disease diagnosis and therapy. In this work, uniform FePt nanoparticles are successfully anchored onto Few-layer molybdenum disulfide nanosheets (F-MoS2 NSs). The powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, UV-Vis spectra and atomic force microscopy were employed to confirm the structure of the obtained nanocomposites (F-MoS2-FePt NCs). The prepared nanocomposites show efficient peroxidase-like catalytic activities verified by catalyzing the peroxidation substrate 4,4'-diamino-3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbiphenyl (TMB) with the existence of H2O2.

RESULTS

The optimal conditions of the constructed colorimetric sensing platform is proved as 35 °C and pH 4.2. Under optimal catalytic conditions, the detection limit for H2O2 detection reaches 2.24 μM and the linear ranger is 8 μM to 300 μM. Furthermore, the proposed colorimetric sensing platform was successfully utilized to detect the intracellular H2O2 of cancer cells (MCF-7).

CONCLUSIONS

These findings indicated that the F-MoS2-FePt-TMB-H2O2 system provides a potential sensing platform for hydrogen peroxide monitoring in living cells.

Mustard seeds derived fluorescent carbon quantum dots and their peroxidase-like activity for colorimetric detection of H2O2 and ascorbic acid in a real sample

Herein, we were synthesized fluorescent carbon quantum dots via facile one-step hydrothermal treatment of mustard seeds (M-CQDs). It showed excellent optical property with fluorescent quantum yield 4.6%. The as-prepared M-CQDs exhibited peroxidase-like mimetic activity and catalyzed the oxidation of chromogenic substrate 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of H₂O₂ to produce a blue color reaction mixture with the prominent peak at 652 nm. Furthermore, the peroxidase-like catalytic performance of M-CQDs followed the steady-state kinetics behavior and exhibited similar catalytic activity as that of natural enzyme Horseradish peroxidase (HRP). In addition to this, the double reciprocal plot showed a parallel line which suggested the occurrence of Ping-Pong type of mechanism. The H₂O₂ dependent oxidation of TMB was helpful for the colorimetric detection of H₂O₂ in the linear range of 0.02-0.20 mM with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.015 mM. Interestingly, the oxidized TMB (ox-TMB) was further reduced to native TMB by the reducing agent ascorbic acid. Hence M-CQDs showed its potential towards the selective and sensitive detection of ascorbic acid in the linear range of 10-70 μM having a correlation coefficient of 0.998 with LOD of 3.26 μM. The practical feasibility of the proposed detection method of AA was also investigated in common fresh fruits.
