Abstract
A magnetic dispersive solid phase extraction method combined with solidification of floating organic droplet-based dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction has been validated for the extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from honey samples. For this purpose, a carbonised cellulose-ferromagnetic nanocomposite was used as a sorbent through the magnetic dispersive solid phase extraction. For preparation of the sorbent, first, carbonised cellulose nanoparticles were created by treating cellulose filter paper with concentrated solution of sulfuric acid. Then, the prepared nanoparticles were loaded onto Fe3O4 nanoparticles through coprecipitation. In the extraction process, first, a few mg of the sorbent was added to the diluted honey solution and dispersed in it using vortex agitation. The particles were then separated and the adsorbed analytes were eluted with an organic solvent. The eluent was taken and after mixing with a water-immiscible extraction solvent was used in the following solidification of floating organic droplet-based dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction procedure. By performing the extraction process under the obtained optimum conditions, low limits of detection (0.08-0.17 ng g-1) and quantification (0.27-0.57 ng g-1), satisfactory precision (relative standard deviations ≤ 5.0%), and wide linear range (0.57-500 ng g-1) with great coefficients of determination (r2≥ 0.9986) were obtained.

Abstract
Covalent organic framework coated nickel foam (NF@COF) was prepared as a sorbent for the dispersive solid phase extraction (DSPE) of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs) prior to their determination by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The structure and morphology of the as-synthesized NF@COF were characterized by different techniques. Various key parameters affecting the performance of the DSPE method, including the amount of sorbent, desorption solvent, desorption volume and time, extraction time, and sample volume, were investigated. Under the optimized conditions, NF@COF combined with GC-MS was successfully applied to the determination of 16 PAHs in CHMs. The method showed wide linearity (20-2000 ng mL-1), low limits of determination (0.3-2.7 ng mL-1), and high recoveries (78.0-124%). These results revealed that NF@COF has the potential for efficient extraction of PAHs from complex samples.

Abstract
In the present work, novel sulfur-coated magnetic carbon nanotubes (MCNTs-S) material was fabricated by S coating on the MCNTs using a simple heating procedure. TGA, EDX, XRD, TEM, and VSM were employed to characterize the as-prepared composite. Using HPLC-UV system, the produced superparamagnetic sorbent was employed for the extraction and measurement of trace levels of five polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in environmental waters. The synergistic effect of the sulfur layer and CNTs substrate is primarily responsible for the remarkable extraction efficiency of the MCNTs-S sorbent towards PAHs. The experimental factors including MCNTs-S dosage, sorption time, elution solvent, ionic strength and solution pH were explored and optimized. Considering that the ionic strength and pH do not have any impact on the PAHs extraction, as a result, there is no need the unnecessary adjustment of the water samples. The linear dynamic ranges and detection limits under optimal conditions were in the range of 0.05-0.11 ng mL-1 and 0.2-150 ng mL-1, respectively. The analysis of PAHs in the real samples (sea water and river water) using this approach was successfully assessed with appropriate recovery values (94.6%-99.0%).

Abstract
This study presents a fabric phase sorptive extraction (FPSE) protocol for the isolation and preconcentration of four selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from tea samples and herbal infusions, followed by their separation and quantification by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In FPSE, extraction of the target analytes is performed utilizing a flexible fabric substrate that is coated with a highly efficient sol–gel sorbent. In this work, eighteen different FPSE membranes were examined, with the highest extraction recoveries being observed with the sol–gel C18 coated FPSE membrane. The main parameters that influence the adsorption and desorption of the PAHs were optimized and the proposed method was validated. The detection limits and the quantification limits were 0.08–0.17 ng mL−1 and 0.25–0.50 ng mL−1, respectively, for the different target compounds with a 10 mL sample. The relative standard deviations for intra-day and inter-day repeatability were less than 7.9% and 8.5%, respectively. The sol–gel C18 coated FPSE membrane could be used for at least 5 subsequent sample preparation cycles. Finally, the proposed protocol was successfully employed for the determination of PAHs in a wide range of tea and herbal infusion samples. A fabric phase sorptive extraction (FPSE) protocol for the isolation and preconcentration of four selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from tea samples and herbal infusions is presented, followed by their quantitative analysis by GC-MS.![]()

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Acute liver failure is usually associated with inflammation and oxidation of hepatocytes and has high mortality and resource costs. Mesenchymal stem cell (MSCs) has occasionally been reported to have no beneficial effect due to poor transplantation and the survival of implanted cells. Recent studies showed that embryonic stem cell (ESC)-derived MSCs are an alternative for regenerative medicine. On the other hand, graphene-based nanostructures have proven useful in biomedicine. In this study, we investigated whether magnetic graphene oxide (MGO) improved the effects of ESC-MSC conditioned medium (CM) on protecting hepatocytes and stimulating the regeneration of damaged liver cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS To provide a rat model of acute liver failure, male rats were injected intraperitoneally with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4 ). The rats were randomly divided into six groups, namely control, sham, CCl4 , ESC-MSC-CM, MGO and ESC-MSC-CM + MGO. In the experimental groups, the rats received, depending on the group, 2 ml/kg body weight CCl4 and either ESC-MSC-CM with 5 × 106 MSCs or 300 μg/kg body weight MGO or both. Symptoms of acute liver failure appeared 4 days after the injection. All groups were compared and analysed both histologically and biochemically 4 days after the injection. Finally, the results of ESC-MSC-CM and MSC-CM were compared. RESULTS The results indicated that the use of MGO enhanced the effect of ESC-MSC-CM on reducing necrosis, inflammation, aspartate transaminase, alanine aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase in the CCl4 -induced liver failure of the rat model. Also, the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) was significantly upregulated after treatment with MGO. Also, the results showed that the ESC-MSC-CM has more efficient effective compared to MSC-CM. CONCLUSION Magnetic graphene oxide improved the hepatoprotective effects of ESC-MSC-CM on acute liver damage, probably by suppressing necrosis, apoptosis and inflammation of hepatocytes.

Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are generated primarily during the incomplete combustion of organic matter and are ubiquitous environmental pollutants. For the first time, in this study, a mesoporous carbon derived from asphalt with high surface area (2300 m²g-1 with an average of 1.2 cm³ g-1) was utilized as a sorbent for the solid-phase extraction (SPE) of several PAHs in tap water samples. The factors influencing the extraction capability of the new material were investigated and the optimum conditions were determined to be as follows: Sample volume - 200 mL, no adjustment of sample pH, and sorbent amount - 50 mg. Under the most favorable SPE conditions, with gas chromatography-mass spectrometric analysis, the method exhibited a linear range of 0.5-50 μgL-1 with limits of detection between 0.004 and 0.026 μgL-1. The recoveries obtained from spiked tap water samples spiked at 1 μgL-1 and 5 μgL-1, were in the range 86.7-98.2% with relative standard deviations of <9%. The method was also applied to tap water samples collected from the local environment. The concentrations of PAHs detected ranged between 0.13 and 48 μgL-1. The reusability of the sorbent was tested with five consecutive SPE extraction, and no carryover of analytes was observed.

Abstract
Removal of dissolved sulfide contaminants from aqueous model solution using bio-derived porous graphitic carbon (PGC) impregnated with δ-MnO2 was investigated. The composite adsorbent was synthesized using the chemical wet deposition method wherein MnO2 was deposited on carbon walls through an in-situ reaction between permanganate and ethanol. Formation of transition metal oxide of manganese in the form of birnessite nanoparticles on interconnected PGC cell structure was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, elemental analysis, and X-Ray diffraction characterization studies. The composite nanomaterial was tested for sulfide removal from aqueous solution at various conditions, including the pH, adsorbent dosage, initial solution concentration, and contact time. Adsorption results demonstrated an excellent adsorption capacity of ca. 90% within 20 min of contact time at 298 K. Equilibrium data collected from batch adsorption experiments fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm model (KL = 190 L/mg; R2 = 0.99). The maximum adsorption capacity of the composite was estimated as 526.3 mg S2-/g at highly alkaline conditions compared to ca. 340 mg/g for a δ-MnO2 adsorbent. Adsorptive oxidation of sulfides on composite MnO2-PGC adsorbent was found to be controlled by the chemisorption process in accordance with the pseudo-second-order reaction model. Characterization of spent adsorbents revealed that sulfide was removed through adsorptive oxidation resulting in the formation of agglomerated particles of metal sulfate complexes and elemental sulfur. Analysis of reaction mechanism revealed that both MnO2 and PGC played a role in the adsorptive oxidation of sulfides to CaSO4 and elemental sulfur.

Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are hazardous environmental pollutants that possess mutagenic and carcinogenic properties. Generally, the concentrations of PAHs in environmental water samples are very low, and it is challenging to detect such levels directly by the analytical instrumentation. Thus, the extraction of PAHs using suitable extraction methodology is required for sample cleanup and analyte enrichment. Dispersive solid-phase extraction has several advantages over conventional approaches for the extraction of PAHs from environmental water samples. In this article, we critically evaluate the role of different nano and micro sorbent materials employed in the extraction of PAHs. Carbon-based nanomaterials, metal-organic frameworks, polymeric nanocomposites, ionic-liquid based composites, and silica-based materials are explicitly covered. This review also provides insight on functional components of all types of sorbents and their way of interaction with PAHs. The factors affecting the dispersive (micro) solid phase extraction of PAHs such as the design of the sorbent, the ratio of functional material to magnetic core, sample volume, amount of sorbent, extraction and desorption times, desorption solvent and its volume, salt addition, and sample pH are critically appraised. Finally, a brief account on the accomplishments, limitations, and challenges associated with such methods is provided.

Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) comprise a group of chemical compounds consisting of two or more fused benzene rings. PAHs exhibit hydrophobicity and low water solubility, while some of their members are toxic substances resistant to degradation. Due to their low levels in environmental matrices, a preconcentration step is usually required for their determination. Nowadays, there is a wide variety of sample preparation techniques, including micro-extraction techniques (e.g., solid-phase microextraction and liquid phase microextraction) and miniaturized extraction techniques (e.g., dispersive solid-phase extraction, magnetic solid-phase extraction, stir bar sorptive extraction, fabric phase sorptive extraction etc.). Compared to the conventional sample preparation techniques, these novel techniques show some benefits, including reduced organic solvent consumption, while they are time and cost efficient. A plethora of adsorbents, such as metal-organic frameworks, carbon-based materials and molecularly imprinted polymers, have been successfully coupled with a wide variety of extraction techniques. This review focuses on the recent advances in the extraction techniques of PAHs from environmental matrices, utilizing novel sample preparation approaches and adsorbents.

Abstract
C60-based magnetic nanospheres were synthesized by coating Fe3O4 nanospheres with silica, then modifying with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane as a linker and a C60 fullerene stationary phase. The morphologies, magnetic properties, infrared absorption and carbon content of magnetic nanospheres were studied by TEM, VSM, FTIR and carbon and sulfur analyzer. The magnetic nanospheres were employed for the magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in nine Chinese herbal medicines. The analyses were conducted by isotope dilution gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The main parameters influencing the extraction, including extraction solvent, adsorbent amount, and extraction time were optimized. Method validation showed that the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.02-0.11 µg/kg, and the limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.07-0.36 µg/kg. The spiked recoveries rates for 16 PAHs in white peony root were 84.7-107.2%. The relative standard deviation (RSD) was 1.7-8.4%. The established method was further used for the determination 16 PAHs in nine Chinese herbal medicines. Total content of 16 PAHs varied from 73.6 µg/kg (fructus lycii) to 2172.6 µg/kg (astragalus root). The results indicate that the pollution of PAHs in Chinese herbal medicines is serious. The established method can effective detect PAHs contamination in Chinese herbal medicines.

Abstract
Graphene oxide (GO) is a chemical compound with a form similar to graphene that consists of one-atom-thick two-dimensional layers of sp2-bonded carbon. Graphene oxide exhibits high hydrophilicity and dispersibility. Thus, it is difficult to be separated from aqueous solutions. Therefore, functionalization with magnetic nanoparticles is performed in order to prepare a magnetic GO nanocomposite that combines the sufficient adsorption capacity of graphene oxide and the convenience of magnetic separation. Moreover, the magnetic material can be further functionalized with different groups to prevent aggregation and extends its potential application. Until today, a plethora of magnetic GO hybrid materials have been synthesized and successfully employed for the magnetic solid-phase extraction of organic compounds from environmental, agricultural, biological, and food samples. The developed GO nanocomposites exhibit satisfactory stability in aqueous solutions, as well as sufficient surface area. Thus, they are considered as an alternative to conventional sorbents by enriching the analytical toolbox for the analysis of trace organic compounds.

Abstract
The core shell nanostructure of magnetic polystyrene (PS@Fe3O4) was prepared and its physic-chemical properties were studied FT-IR, SEM, TEM, VSM and BET + BJH. The new adsorbent was applied in the dispersive solid phase extraction technique for measuring copper ions in water, Soil and Oyster samples. Analysis is carried out using a flame atomic absorption spectrometry system. Effective parameters on extraction efficiency, such as pH of extraction solution, sorbent dosage, contact time, concentration and volume of desorption eluent and desorption time were optimized using one at a time method. N2 adsorption-desorption experiment resulted in high BET surface area (32.002 m2 g−1) and large pore volume (0.1794 cm3 g−1) for PS@ Fe3O4 nanocomposite. Under the optimum conditions, a calibration curve within the range of 5–40 ng mL−1 with an appropriate coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.9946 was obtained. Preconcentration factor (PF) and limit of detection (LOD) were found to be 55 and 1.6 ng mL−1, respectively. The repeatability and reproducibility for three replicate measurements at the concentration of 25 ng mL−1 were 2.5%–1.4%, respectively. The Freundlich adsorption isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model were consistent to experimental data in adsorption mechanism study. The maximum adsorption capacity was 19.56 mg g−1 for Cu (II). Finally, the efficiency of the method was investigated for analysis of the copper in environmental samples and good relative recoveries (RR%) were obtained within the range of 99.2% to 101.2%.

Abstract
The biomonitoring of hydroxy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urine, as a direct way to access multiple exposures to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, has raised great concerns due to their increasing hazardous health effects on humans. Solid-phase extraction is an effective and useful technique to preconcentrate trace analytes from biological samples. Here, we report a novel solid-phase extraction method using a graphene oxide incorporated monolithic syringe for the determination of six hydroxy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urine coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The effect of graphene oxide amount, washing solvent, eluting solvent, and its volume on the extraction performance were investigated. The fabricated monoliths gave higher adsorption efficiency and capacity than the neat polymer monolith and commercial C18 sorbent. Under the optimum conditions, the developed method provided the detection limits (S/N = 3) of 0.02-0.1 ng/mL and the linear ranges of 0.1-1500 ng/mL for six analytes in urine sample. The recoveries at three spiked levels ranged from 77.5 to 97.1%. Besides, the intra column-to-column (n = 3) and inter batch-to-batch (n = 3) precisions were ≤ 9.8%. The developed method was successfully applied for the determination of hydroxy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urine samples of coke oven workers.
