Mechanically robust nanocomposites from screen-printable polymer/graphene nanosheet pastes

Structural Design and Fabrication of Multifunctional Nanocarbon Materials for Extreme Environmental Applications

Extreme environments represent numerous harsh environmental conditions, such as temperature, pressure, corrosion, and radiation. The tolerance of applications in extreme environments exemplifies significant challenges to both materials and their structures. Given the superior mechanical strength, electrical conductivity, thermal stability, and chemical stability of nanocarbon materials, such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene, they are widely investigated as base materials for extreme environmental applications and have shown numerous breakthroughs in the fields of wide-temperature structural-material construction, low-temperature energy storage, underwater sensing, and electronics operated at high temperatures. Here, the critical aspects of structural design and fabrication of nanocarbon materials for extreme environments are reviewed, including a description of the underlying mechanism supporting the performance of nanocarbon materials against extreme environments, the principles of structural design of nanocarbon materials for the optimization of extreme environmental performances, and the fabrication processes developed for the realization of specific extreme environmental applications. Finally, perspectives on how CNTs and graphene can further contribute to the development of extreme environmental applications are presented.

Developing a facile graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-coated stainless steel mesh with different superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic and superoleophilic behavior for oil-water separation

There is an increasing demand for the development of inexpensive and effective approaches for the oil-water separation due to the global concern in oil industries. The present study was conducted to fabricate graphitic carbon nitride/thermoplastic polyurethane (g-C₃N₄/TPU)-coated stainless steel meshes via the dip-coating method to investigate the capability of g-C₃N₄ nanosheets (CN-NS) in oil-water separation. CN-NS was synthesized using the polycondensation process followed by exfoliation with Hummer's method. We studied the effect of TPU and CN-NS concentration on wettability behavior to obtain an optimized coating solution. CN-NS-coated mesh showed superoleophilic/hydrophobic behavior at CN-NS:TPU ratio of 50:50, and it efficiently passed oil from the emulsified water-in-oil mixture (with 50 wt.% oil) with the efficiency of 99%. The wettability behavior of superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic was also obtained at CN-NS:TPU ratio of 80:20, and it was able to separate water from the emulsified water-in-oil mixture with the efficiency of 79% under gravity. Both filters were able to separate free water and oil mixtures with flux and efficiency of 6114 L.m^-2.h^-1 and ~ 99.99%, respectively. The mechanism of wettability behavior of the coating is mainly related to the functional groups on the edge of g-C₃N₄-NS, thus increasing the hydrophilic properties of the surface. In addition, the micro-nano hierarchical structure of the surface coating improves its roughness due to the presence of CN-NS, which is effectively embedded into the hydrophilic TPU. More importantly, commercially available TPU chemical and simple fabrication of g-C₃N₄ from an inexpensive precursor make the method reported herein as a significant alternative for large-scale application.

Soft Bioelectronics Based on Nanomaterials

Recent advances in nanostructured materials and unconventional device designs have transformed the bioelectronics from a rigid and bulky form into a soft and ultrathin form and brought enormous advantages to the bioelectronics. For example, mechanical deformability of the soft bioelectronics and thus its conformal contact onto soft curved organs such as brain, heart, and skin have allowed researchers to measure high-quality biosignals, deliver real-time feedback treatments, and lower long-term side-effects in vivo. Here, we review various materials, fabrication methods, and device strategies for flexible and stretchable electronics, especially focusing on soft biointegrated electronics using nanomaterials and their composites. First, we summarize top-down material processing and bottom-up synthesis methods of various nanomaterials. Next, we discuss state-of-the-art technologies for intrinsically stretchable nanocomposites composed of nanostructured materials incorporated in elastomers or hydrogels. We also briefly discuss unconventional device design strategies for soft bioelectronics. Then individual device components for soft bioelectronics, such as biosensing, data storage, display, therapeutic stimulation, and power supply devices, are introduced. Afterward, representative application examples of the soft bioelectronics are described. A brief summary with a discussion on remaining challenges concludes the review.

Influence of functionalized core-shell structure on the thermodynamic and shape memory properties of nanocomposites

Filler/matrix interfacial cohesion exerts a straightforward effect on stress transfer at the interface in composite structures, thereby significantly affecting their integrated mechanical properties. Thus, controlling the interface interaction of polymers/fillers is essential for the fabrication of high-performance polymer composites. In this work, a functionalized core-shell structured hybrid was prepared via charge attraction and applied as a novel filler in the trans-1,4-polyisoprene matrix to improve the interfacial interaction of the filler/matrix. A series of tests on the micro- and macroscale was performed to investigate its thermal, mechanical and shape memory performances. The obtained results show that while guaranteeing the shape memory properties of the composites, the utilization of the core-shell structured hybrid not only improved the heat resistant performance, but also contributed to better mechanical properties. This provides solid evidence for the potential of the innovative method presented herein, which may shed some light on the improvement of the interface design strategy and the development of composites with high performances.
