Investigating the Effect of Chain Extender on the Phase Separation and Mechanical Properties of Polybutadiene-Based Polyurethane

The thermodynamic incompatibility between the soft and hard segments of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) results in a microphase-separated behavior and excellent mechanical properties. However, the effect of the chain extender on the degree of microphase separation (DMS) and the resultant mechanical properties of TPU have not been well studied because of the complex interactions between the soft and hard segments. Herein, hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene-based TPUs(HTPB-TPUs) without hydrogen bonding between the soft and hard segments are synthesized using hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene, toluene diisocyanate, and four different chain extenders, and the effect of the chain extender structure on DMS is analyzed experimentally using a combination of analytical techniques. Furthermore, the solubility parameters of the soft and hard segments, glass transition temperatures, and hydrogen-bond density of the HTPB-TPUs, are computed using all-atom molecular dynamics simulations. The results clearly reveal that the chain extender significantly affects the DMS and thus the mechanical properties of HTPB-TPUs. This study paves the way for studying the relationship between the structure and properties of TPU.

Modifying Effect and Mechanism of Polymer Powder on the Properties of Asphalt Binder for Engineering Application

For achieving the better modifying effect of polyurethane on asphalt pavement materials, the PUA powder modifier was prepared with fine grinding at the glass transition temperature, and polyurethane-modified asphalt (PUA-MA) with different dosages of modifier was prepared. The impact of the PUA on the physical properties of asphalt binder was studied. The modifying mechanism of PUA on asphalt was explored by investigating the thermal performance and chemical composition of asphalt (thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry test, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy). The micrograph of the interactive interface was characterized by scanning an electron microscope. Furthermore, the rheological properties of PUA-MA were also investigated and analyzed. The results indicated that the PUA had a dense structure with few pores on the surface. After mixing with asphalt, it altered the asphalt's internal structure via physical fusion and chemical reaction (carbamate formation). PUA improved the thermal stability of asphalt, enhanced the asphalt's thermal decomposition temperature, and further reduced the thermal mass loss while decreasing the glass transition temperature. The addition and dosage increase in the PUA modifier significantly improved the softening point, viscosity, complex shear modulus, and rutting factor of asphalt. Also, the PUA could improve the elastic recovery ability of asphalt and enhance the rutting resistance of asphalt at high temperatures. However, the crack resistance at low temperatures was not effectively improved (ductility and penetration decreased). When the dosage was 6-9%, PUA-MA had the best high-temperature performance, but asphalt showed poor low-temperature performance at this dosage. This study provides a theoretical reference for popularizing and applying polyurethane as an asphalt modifier in road engineering.

Research on Micro-Mechanics Modelling of TPU-Modified Asphalt Mastic

To explore the interactions and mechanisms of Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)-modified asphalt with different kinds of mineral fillers, a micro-mechanical model for TPU-modified asphalt mastic was established, which considered the interaction between asphalt and mineral powder to effectively analyze the internal mechanisms affecting the rheological properties of TPU-modified asphalt mastic. In this study, according to the micro-mechanics of composites’ principles, the dynamic shear modulus (|G*|) of asphalt mastic with different mass ratios of filler/asphalt (F/A) was calculated by the homogenize morphologically representative pattern (H-MRP) model. The key ratio of F/A, which is close to the test result, can be determined, and a four-phase H-MRP model of the TPU modified asphalt mastic was established after considering the structure of asphalt layer thickness. The results were interpreted based on the known reactions of TPU with asphalt model compounds. The |G*| of TPU-modified asphalt mastic was predicted by using this model. Furthermore, the effects of the complex shear modulus, Poisson’s ratio of TPU-modified asphalt, Poisson’s ratio, particle size of mineral powder, and thickness of the structural asphalt layer in the |G*| of TPU-modified asphalt mastic were analyzed in the whole-model construction, as well as the internal mechanism of the |G*| of TPU modified asphalt mastic. In addition, can also be found the predicted value of |G*| calculated by the four-phase H-MRP model is close to the experimental value after choosing a structural asphalt layer of appropriate thickness.

Multiblock Thermoplastic Polyurethanes: In Situ Studies of Structural and Morphological Evolution under Strain

The structural evolution of multiblock thermoplastic polyurethane ureas based on two polydiols, poly(1,4-butylene adipate (PBA) and poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL), as soft blocks and two diisocyanites, 2,4-toluylene diisocyanate (TDI) and 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI), as hard blocks is monitored during in situ deformation by small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering. It was shown that the urethane environment determines the crystal structure of the soft block. Consequently, two populations of crystalline domains of polydiols are formed. Aromatic TDI forms rigid domains and imposes constrains on the crystallization of bounded polydiol. During stretching, the TDI–polydiol domains reveal limited elastic deformation without reorganization of the crystalline phase. The constrained lamellae of polydiol form an additional physical network that contributes to the elastic modulus and strength of the material. In contrast, polydiols connected to the linear semi-flexible HMDI have a higher crystallization rate and exhibit a more regular lamellar morphology. During deformation, the HMDI-PBA domains show a typical thermoplastic behavior with plastic flow and necking because of the high degree of crystallinity of PBA at room temperature. Materials with HMDI-PCL bonding exhibit elastic deformation due to the low degree of crystallinity of the PCL block in the isotropic state. At higher strain, hardening of the material is observed due to the stress-induced crystallization of PCL.

A combined experimental and molecular dynamics simulation study of an intrinsic self-healing polyurethane elastomer based on a dynamic non-covalent mechanism

An intrinsic self-healing polyurethane (PU) elastomer with excellent self-healing efficiency was prepared. The self-healing properties of this elastomer as well as the temperature dependence of self-healing can be tailored by regulating the molar ratio of hard to soft segments. The self-healing efficiency of 92.5% is the highest when the molar ratio of 4,4-methylenedicyclohexyl diisocyanate (HMDI) to polypropylene carbonate polyol (PPC) is 1.3 and the temperature is 25 °C. In situ temperature swing infrared spectra and low-field nuclear magnetic resonance reveal that the soft segment, PPC, endows PU with a dense dynamic hydrogen bond network, and the dissociation and reconstruction of the hydrogen bond network enable the PU to heal. To date, the exchange of hydrogen bonds has not been observed intuitively through experimental means. Therefore, the number, type, strength, lifetime, and the exchange of hydrogen bonds in the self-healing process at different temperatures were investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The simulated results show that the type of hydrogen bond exchange between functional groups will be affected by temperature. The hydrogen bonds between urethane and urea groups play a leading role in the self-healing properties due to the high strength and a large number of hydrogen bonds at both 25 and 50 °C. The stronger strength, longer lifetime, and greater number of effective hydrogen bonds at 25 °C make the self-healing efficiency of PU higher than at 50 °C.

Self-Assembly of Silk-like Protein into Nanoscale Bicontinuous Networks under Phase-Separation Conditions

Liquid-liquid phase separation of biomacromolecules is crucial in various inter- and extracellular biological functions. This includes formation of condensates to control, e.g., biochemical reactions and structural assembly. The same phenomenon is also found to be critically important in protein-based high-performance biological materials. Here, we use a well-characterized model triblock protein system to demonstrate the molecular level formation mechanism and structure of its condensate. Large-scale molecular modeling supported by analytical ultracentrifuge characterization combined with our earlier high magnification precision cryo-SEM microscopy imaging leads to deducing that the condensate has a bicontinuous network structure. The bicontinuous network rises from the proteins having a combination of sites with stronger mutual attraction and multiple weakly attractive regions connected by flexible, multiconfigurational linker regions. These attractive sites and regions behave as stickers of varying adhesion strength. For the examined model triblock protein construct, the β-sheet-rich end units are the stronger stickers, while additional weaker stickers, contributing to the condensation affinity, rise from spring-like connections in the flexible middle region of the protein. The combination of stronger and weaker sticker-like connections and the flexible regions between the stickers result in a versatile, liquid-like, self-healing structure. This structure also explains the high flexibility, easy deformability, and diffusion of the proteins, decreasing only 10-100 times in the bicontinuous network formed in the condensate phase in comparison to dilute protein solution. The here demonstrated structure and condensation mechanism of a model triblock protein construct via a combination of the stronger binding regions and the weaker, flexible sacrificial-bond-like network as well as its generalizability via polymer sticker models provide means to not only understand intracellular organization, regulation, and cellular function but also to identify direct control factors for and to enable engineering improved protein and polymer constructs to enhance control of advanced fiber materials, smart liquid biointerfaces, or self-healing matrices for pharmaceutics or bioengineering materials.

The effect of chiral end groups on the assembly of supramolecular polyurethanes

We describe the generation of supramolecular polyurethanes and the positive effect that chirality has upon the physical properties of these materials.

A Fluorescent Polyurethane with Covalently Cross-Linked Rhodamine Derivatives

Rhodamine derivatives (RDs) with three reactive hydrogens were synthesized and well characterized by Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and electrospray ionization mass spectra (ESI mass). Then, the obtained RD was covalently cross-linked into polyurethane (PU) matrix through chemical linkages to fabricate a network structure, and the fluorescent properties, mechanical properties, thermal stability, and emulsion particle size were systematically investigated. Results demonstrate that PU-RD maintains initial fluorescent properties and emits desirable yellow fluorescence under ultraviolet irradiation. Moreover, compared with linear PU without fluorescers, PU-RD shows clearly improved mechanical properties and thermal stability, on account of the formed network structures.

Properties and degradation of castor oil-based fluoridated biopolyurethanes with different lengths of fluorinated segments

To develop a durable, biodegradable polymer, this study successfully synthesized a castor-oil-based prepolymer by using methylene diphenyl diisocyanate as a hard segment, polycaprolactone as a soft segment, and castor oil as a functional monomer. We added perfluorinated alkyl segments with varying chain lengths into the castor-oil-based polymer to synthesize castor-oil-based fluoridated biopolyurethanes (FCOPUs) with different fluorinated segment lengths. The castor-oil-based polyurethanes with different fluorinated segment lengths had similar molecular weights, which enabled accurate analysis of the effect of the lengths of fluorinated segments on FCOPUs. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was used to perform 1H NMR, 19F NMR, 19F-19F COSY, 1H-19F COSY, and HMBC analyses on the FCOPU structures. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy curve fitting verified the interaction between C-F⋯H-N and C-F⋯C[double bond, length as m-dash]O. This interaction increased as the fluorinated segments became longer. Regarding the thermal properties of the FCOPUs, the thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and dynamic mechanical analysis results revealed that long fluorinated segments were associated with increased thermal stability in the FCOPUs. The atomic force microscopy and tensile strength test suggested that long fluorinated segments contained in the FCOPUs increased the degree of phase separation and tensile strength in FCOPUs. Finally, we dipped the FCOPUs in a 3 wt% NaOH solution, calculated the weight loss of the FCOPUs, and observed their surface structure by using scanning electron microscopy.
