Recent advances on the thermal destabilization of Mg-based hydrogen storage materials

Magnesium hydride protects against acetaminophen-induced acute kidney injury by inhibiting TXNIP/NLRP3/nf-κb pathway

Acetaminophen (APAP)-induced acute kidney injury (APAP-AKI) has turned into one of reasons for clinic obtained renal insufficiency. Magnesium hydride (MgH2), as a solid-state hydrogen source, might be potentially applied in clinical practice. The current study aimed to investigate the protective effect of MgH2 against APAP-AKI. The results showed that MgH2 improved renal function and histological injury in mice of APAP-AKI. MgH2 also had protective effects on APAP-induced cytotoxicity in HK-2 cells. In addition, the increased level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and expressions of inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and IL-1β) and pro-apoptotic factors (Bad, Bax, Caspase3, and CytC) induced by APAP were downregulated with MgH2 treatment. Furthermore, the expressions of molecules related to TXNIP/NLRP3/NF-κB pathway (TXNIP, NLRP3, NF-κB p65 and p-NF-κB p65) in renal tissues and HK-2 cells were enhanced by APAP overdose, which were reduced by MgH2 administration. Collectively, this study indicated that MgH2 protects against APAP-AKI by alleviating oxidative stress, inflammation and apoptosis via inhibition of TXNIP/NLRP3/NF-κB signaling pathway.

Nanoparticulate ZrNi: In Situ Disproportionation Effectively Enhances Hydrogen Cycling of MgH2

High thermal stability and sluggish absorption/desorption kinetics are still important limitations for using magnesium hydride (MgH2) as a solid-state hydrogen storage medium. One of the most effective solutions in improving hydrogen storage properties of MgH2 is to introduce a suitable catalyst. Herein, a novel nanoparticulate ZrNi with 10-60 nm in size was successfully prepared by co-precipitation followed by a molten-salt reduction process. The 7 wt % nano-ZrNi-catalyzed MgH2 composite desorbs 6.1 wt % hydrogen starting from ∼178 °C after activation, lowered by 99 °C relative to the pristine MgH2 (∼277 °C). The dehydrided sample rapidly absorbs ∼5.5 wt % H2 when operating at 150 °C for 8 min. The remarkably improved hydrogen storage properties are reasonably ascribed to the in situ formation of ZrH2, ZrNi2, and Mg2NiH4 caused by the disproportionation reaction of nano-ZrNi during the first de-/hydrogenation cycle. These catalytic active species are uniformly dispersed in the MgH2 matrix, thus creating a multielement, multiphase, and multivalent environment, which not only largely favors the breaking and rebonding of H-H bonds and the transfer of electrons between H- and Mg2+ but also provides multiple hydrogen diffusion channels. These findings are of particularly scientific importance for the design and preparation of highly active catalysts for hydrogen storage in light-metal hydrides.

Nanostructuring of Mg-Based Hydrogen Storage Materials: Recent Advances for Promoting Key Applications

A comprehensive discussion of the recent advances in the nanostructure engineering of Mg-based hydrogen storage materials is presented. The fundamental theories of hydrogen storage in nanostructured Mg-based hydrogen storage materials and their practical applications are reviewed. The challenges and recommendations of current nanostructured hydrogen storage materials are pointed out.

Abstract

With the depletion of fossil fuels and global warming, there is an urgent demand to seek green, low-cost, and high-efficiency energy resources. Hydrogen has been considered as a potential candidate to replace fossil fuels, due to its high gravimetric energy density (142 MJ kg−1), high abundance (H2O), and environmental-friendliness. However, due to its low volume density, effective and safe hydrogen storage techniques are now becoming the bottleneck for the "hydrogen economy". Under such a circumstance, Mg-based hydrogen storage materials garnered tremendous interests due to their high hydrogen storage capacity (~ 7.6 wt% for MgH2), low cost, and excellent reversibility. However, the high thermodynamic stability (ΔH =  − 74.7 kJ mol−1 H2) and sluggish kinetics result in a relatively high desorption temperature (> 300 °C), which severely restricts widespread applications of MgH2. Nano-structuring has been proven to be an effective strategy that can simultaneously enhance the ab/de-sorption thermodynamic and kinetic properties of MgH2, possibly meeting the demand for rapid hydrogen desorption, economic viability, and effective thermal management in practical applications. Herein, the fundamental theories, recent advances, and practical applications of the nanostructured Mg-based hydrogen storage materials are discussed. The synthetic strategies are classified into four categories: free-standing nano-sized Mg/MgH2 through electrochemical/vapor-transport/ultrasonic methods, nanostructured Mg-based composites via mechanical milling methods, construction of core-shell nano-structured Mg-based composites by chemical reduction approaches, and multi-dimensional nano-sized Mg-based heterostructure by nanoconfinement strategy. Through applying these strategies, near room temperature ab/de-sorption (< 100 °C) with considerable high capacity (> 6 wt%) has been achieved in nano Mg/MgH2 systems. Some perspectives on the future research and development of nanostructured hydrogen storage materials are also provided.

On the Catalytic Mechanism of 3d and 4d Transition-Metal-Based Materials on the Hydrogen Sorption Properties of Mg/MgH2

The slow hydrogenation/dehydrogenation kinetics and high thermodynamic stability of the Mg–H bond are the two major limitations for the large-scale utilization of MgH2. In this review, we introduce the catalytic mechanism of 3d and 4d transition metal (TM) on the hydrogen sorption properties of Mg/MgH2. The relative contribution of interatomic interactions to the thermodynamic stability of the TM-substituted MgH2 system is discussed. A synergy effect between the electronegativity and the radius of the TM element is proposed to explain the charge transfer process between TM and H in the TM-substituted MgH2 system. The catalytic mechanism of TM nearby the surface of Mg is more complicated than that in the volume of Mg, as the surface-doped TM can experience more options for doping sites, leading to the hindrance effect and causing various contributions of the d band center to the dissociation of hydrogen molecules and the diffusion of hydrogen atoms nearby the surface of Mg. In terms of the catalytic mechanism of TM for hydrogen sorption kinetics of Mg/MgH2, we particularly focused on the “hydrogen pump” effect existing in the Mg–TM–H system. Other mechanisms, such as a possible catalytic mechanism of TM for the hydrogen sorption properties of nano-sized freestanding Mg/MgH2, were also presented.

Hydrogen and Deuterium Solubility, Diffusivity and Permeability from Sorption Measurements in the Ni33Ti39Nb28 Alloy

The hydrogen/deuterium sorption properties of Ni₃₃Ti₃₉Nb₂₈ synthesized by the vacuum induction melting technique were measured between 400 and 495 °C for pressure lower than 3 bar. The Sieverts law is valid up to H(D)/M < 0.2 in its ideal form; the absolute values of the hydrogenation/deuteration enthalpy are ΔH(H₂) = 85 ± 5 kJ/mol and ΔH(D₂) = 84 ± 4 kJ/mol. From the kinetics of absorption, the diffusion coefficient was derived, and an Arrhenius dependence from the temperature was obtained, with E_a,d = 12 ± 1 kJ/mol for both hydrogen isotopes. The values of the alloy permeability, obtained by combining the solubility and the diffusion coefficient, were of the order of 10^-9 mol m^-1 s^-1 Pa^-0.5, a value which is one order of magnitude lower than that of Ni₄₁Ti₄₂Nb₁₇, until now the best Ni-Ti-Nb alloy for hydrogen purification. In view of the simplicity of the technique here proposed to calculate the permeability, this method could be used for the preliminary screening of new alloys.

Impact of Polymers on Magnesium-Based Hydrogen Storage Systems

In the present scenario, much importance has been provided to hydrogen energy systems (HES) in the energy sector because of their clean and green behavior during utilization. The developments of novel techniques and materials have focused on overcoming the practical difficulties in the HES (production, storage and utilization). Comparatively, considerable attention needs to be provided in the hydrogen storage systems (HSS) because of physical-based storage (compressed gas, cold/cryo compressed and liquid) issues such as low gravimetric/volumetric density, storage conditions/parameters and safety. In material-based HSS, a high amount of hydrogen can be effectively stored in materials via physical or chemical bonds. In different hydride materials, Mg-based hydrides (Mg–H) showed considerable benefits such as low density, hydrogen uptake and reversibility. However, the inferior sorption kinetics and severe oxidation/contamination at exposure to air limit its benefits. There are numerous kinds of efforts, like the inclusion of catalysts that have been made for Mg–H to alter the thermodynamic-related issues. Still, those efforts do not overcome the oxidation/contamination-related issues. The developments of Mg–H encapsulated by gas-selective polymers can effectively and positively influence hydrogen sorption kinetics and prevent the Mg–H from contaminating (air and moisture). In this review, the impact of different polymers (carboxymethyl cellulose, polystyrene, polyimide, polypyrrole, polyvinylpyrrolidone, polyvinylidene fluoride, polymethylpentene, and poly(methyl methacrylate)) with Mg–H systems has been systematically reviewed. In polymer-encapsulated Mg–H, the polymers act as a barrier for the reaction between Mg–H and O2/H2O, selectively allowing the H2 gas and preventing the aggregation of hydride nanoparticles. Thus, the H2 uptake amount and sorption kinetics improved considerably in Mg–H.

Enhanced hydrogen storage properties of ZrTiVAl1−xFex high-entropy alloys by modifying the Fe content

The reduced interdendritic phase favors shortening of the H atom diffusion distance, thereby increasing the hydrogenation rate. The transfer of element V to the C14 Laves phase leads to an increase in hydrogen storage capacity.

Intermetallic Compounds Synthesized by Mechanical Alloying for Solid-State Hydrogen Storage: A Review

Hydrogen energy is a very attractive option in dealing with the existing energy crisis. For the development of a hydrogen energy economy, hydrogen storage technology must be improved to over the storage limitations. Compared with traditional hydrogen storage technology, the prospect of hydrogen storage materials is broader. Among all types of hydrogen storage materials, solid hydrogen storage materials are most promising and have the most safety security. Solid hydrogen storage materials include high surface area physical adsorption materials and interstitial and non-interstitial hydrides. Among them, interstitial hydrides, also called intermetallic hydrides, are hydrides formed by transition metals or their alloys. The main alloy types are A2B, AB, AB2, AB3, A2B7, AB5, and BCC. A is a hydride that easily forms metal (such as Ti, V, Zr, and Y), while B is a non-hydride forming metal (such as Cr, Mn, and Fe). The development of intermetallic compounds as hydrogen storage materials is very attractive because their volumetric capacity is much higher (80–160 kgH2m−3) than the gaseous storage method and the liquid storage method in a cryogenic tank (40 and 71 kgH2m−3). Additionally, for hydrogen absorption and desorption reactions, the environmental requirements are lower than that of physical adsorption materials (ultra-low temperature) and the simplicity of the procedure is higher than that of non-interstitial hydrogen storage materials (multiple steps and a complex catalyst). In addition, there are abundant raw materials and diverse ingredients. For the synthesis and optimization of intermetallic compounds, in addition to traditional melting methods, mechanical alloying is a very important synthesis method, which has a unique synthesis mechanism and advantages. This review focuses on the application of mechanical alloying methods in the field of solid hydrogen storage materials.

Roles of Ti-Based Catalysts on Magnesium Hydride and Its Hydrogen Storage Properties

Magnesium-based hydrides are considered as promising candidates for solid-state hydrogen storage and thermal energy storage, due to their high hydrogen capacity, reversibility, and elemental abundance of Mg. To improve the sluggish kinetics of MgH2, catalytic doping using Ti-based catalysts is regarded as an effective approach to enhance Mg-based materials. In the past decades, Ti-based additives, as one of the important groups of catalysts, have received intensive endeavors towards the understanding of the fundamental principle of catalysis for the Mg-H2 reaction. In this review, we start with the introduction of fundamental features of magnesium hydride and then summarize the recent advances of Ti-based additive doped MgH2 materials. The roles of Ti-based catalysts in various categories of elemental metals, hydrides, oxides, halides, and intermetallic compounds were overviewed. Particularly, the kinetic mechanisms are discussed in detail. Moreover, the remaining challenges and future perspectives of Mg-based hydrides are discussed.

Stabilizing γ-MgH2 at Nanotwins in Mechanically Constrained Nanoparticles

Reversible hydrogen uptake and the metal/dielectric transition make the Mg/MgH₂ system a prime candidate for solid-state hydrogen storage and dynamic plasmonics. However, high dehydrogenation temperatures and slow dehydrogenation hamper broad applicability. One promising strategy to improve dehydrogenation is the formation of metastable γ-MgH₂ . A nanoparticle (NP) design, where γ-MgH₂ forms intrinsically during hydrogenation is presented and a formation mechanism based on transmission electron microscopy results is proposed. Volume expansion during hydrogenation causes compressive stress within the confined, anisotropic NPs, leading to plastic deformation of β-MgH₂ via (301)_β twinning. It is proposed that these twins nucleate γ-MgH₂ nanolamellas, which are stabilized by residual compressive stress. Understanding this mechanism is a crucial step toward cycle-stable, Mg-based dynamic plasmonic and hydrogen-storage materials with improved dehydrogenation. It is envisioned that a more general design of confined NPs utilizes the inherent volume expansion to reform γ-MgH₂ during each rehydrogenation.

Fuels, power and chemical periodicity

The insatiable-and ever-growing-demand of both the developed and the developing countries for power continues to be met largely by the carbonaceous fuels comprising coal, and the hydrocarbons natural gas and liquid petroleum. We review the properties of the chemical elements, overlaid with trends in the periodic table, which can help explain the historical-and present-dominance of hydrocarbons as fuels for power generation. However, the continued use of hydrocarbons as fuel/power sources to meet our economic and social needs is now recognized as a major driver of dangerous global environmental changes, including climate change, acid deposition, urban smog and the release of many toxic materials. This has resulted in an unprecedented interest in and focus on alternative, renewable or sustainable energy sources. A major area of interest to emerge is in hydrogen energy as a sustainable vector for our future energy needs. In that vision, the issue of hydrogen storage is now a key challenge in support of hydrogen-fuelled transportation using fuel cells. The chemistry of hydrogen is itself beautifully diverse through a variety of different types of chemical interactions and bonds forming compounds with most other elements in the periodic table. In terms of their hydrogen storage and production properties, we outline various relationships among hydride compounds and materials of the chemical elements to provide some qualitative and quantitative insights. These encompass thermodynamic and polarizing strength properties to provide such background information. We provide an overview of the fundamental nature of hydrides particularly in relation to the key operating parameters of hydrogen gravimetric storage density and the desorption/operating temperature at which the requisite amount of hydrogen is released for use in the fuel cell. While we await the global transition to a completely renewable and sustainable future, it is also necessary to seek CO2 mitigation technologies applied to the use of fossil fuels. We review recent advances in the strategy of using hydrocarbon fossil fuels themselves as compounds for the high capacity storage and production of hydrogen without any CO2 emissions. Based on these advances, the world may end up with a hydrogen economy completely different from the one it had expected to develop; remarkably, with 'Green hydrogen' being derived directly from the hydrogen-stripping of fossil fuels. Hydrogen storage behavior of nanocrystalline and amorphous Mg-Ni-Cu-La alloys

Alloying and structural modification are two effective ways to enhance the hydrogen storage kinetics and decrease the thermal stability of Mg and Mg-based alloys. In order to enhance the characteristics of Mg₂Ni-type alloys, Cu and La were added to an Mg₂Ni-type alloy, and the sample alloys (Mg₂₄Ni₁₀Cu₂)_100−xLa_x (x = 0, 5, 10, 15, 20) were prepared by melt spinning. The influences of La content and spinning rate on the gaseous and electrochemical hydrogen storage properties of the sample alloys were explored in detail. The structural identification carried out by XRD and TEM indicates that the main phase of the alloys is Mg₂Ni and the addition of La results in the formation of the secondary phases LaMg₃ and La₂Mg₁₇. The as-spun alloys have amorphous and nanocrystalline structures, and the addition of La promotes glass formation. The electrochemical properties examined by an automatic galvanostatic system show that the samples possess a good activation capability and achieve their maximal discharge capacities within three cycles. The discharge potential characteristics were vastly ameliorated by melt spinning and La addition. The discharge capacities of the samples achieve their maximal values as the La content changes, and the discharge capacities always increase with increasing spinning rate. The addition of La leads to a decline in hydrogen absorption capacity, but it can effectively enhance the rate of hydrogen absorption. The addition of La and melt spinning significantly increase the hydrogen desorption rate due to the reduced activation energy.

A series of four novel alkaline earth metal-organic frameworks constructed of Ca(ii), Sr(ii), Ba(ii) ions and tetrahedral MTB linker: structural diversity, stability study and low/high-pressure gas adsorption properties

A series of four novel microporous alkaline earth metal–organic frameworks (AE-MOFs) containing methanetetrabenzoate linker (MTB) with composition {[Ca₄(μ₈-MTB)₂]·2DMF·4H₂O}_n (UPJS-6), {[Ca₄(μ₄-O)(μ₈-MTB)_3/2(H₂O)₄]·4DMF·4H₂O}_n (UPJS-7), {[Sr₃(μ₇-MTB)_3/2]·4DMF·7H₂O}_n (UPJS-8) and {[Ba₃(μ₇-MTB)_3/2(H₂O)₆]·2DMF·4H₂O}_n (UPJS-9) (UPJS = University of Pavol Jozef Safarik) have been successfully prepared and characterized. The framework stability and thermal robustness of prepared materials were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and high-energy powder X-ray diffraction (HE-PXRD). MOFs were tested as adsorbents for different gases at various pressures and temperatures. Nitrogen and argon adsorption showed that the activated samples have moderate BET surface areas: 103 m² g⁻¹ (N₂)/126 m² g⁻¹ (Ar) for UPJS-7′′, 320 m² g⁻¹ (N₂)/358 m² g⁻¹ (Ar) for UPJS-9′′ and UPJS-8′′ adsorbs only a limited amount of N₂ and Ar. It should be noted that all prepared compounds adsorb carbon dioxide with storage capacities ranging from 3.9 to 2.4 wt% at 20 °C and 1 atm, and 16.4–13.5 wt% at 30 °C and 20 bar. Methane adsorption isotherms show no adsorption at low pressures and with increasing pressure the storage capacity increases to 4.0–2.9 wt% of CH₄ at 30 °C and 20 bar. Compounds displayed the highest hydrogen uptake of 3.7–1.8 wt% at −196 °C and 800 Torr among MTB containing MOFs.

Four novel microporous alkaline earth metal–organic frameworks (AE-MOFs) containing methanetetrabenzoate linker (MTB): UPJS-6, UPJS-7, UPJS-8 and UPJS-9 have been successfully prepared, characterized and tested as adsorbents for different gases.

Effects of Amorphous and Nanocrystalline Structures on Hydrogen-Induced Optical Performance of Modulated Mg-Gd Films with Various Composition Fluctuations

Nanomodification and amorphization are vital for improving the hydrogenation properties of magnesium (Mg)-based alloys. However, comparisons of their positive effects have been rarely presented because their usual fabrication process of annealing is hard to control. In this study, after tuning the composition fluctuation range, self-assembled well-ordered multilayer Mg_0.7Gd_0.3 films with an excessive amount of nanosized crystals were fabricated by deviating substrates to the edge of the sample stage, while relatively low crystallinity was gained at the center of the sample stage with a small composition fluctuation. It was demonstrated that the hydrogen diffusion rate in the sample deposited at the center with excessive amorphous regions was higher than that of the film fabricated at the edge with excessive nanocrystals regions. Besides, optical conversion ranges were monitored before and after the hydrogen absorption process. Films with large composition fluctuation possessed a high optical reflectance conversion range because the interference effects occurring inside improved their initial reflectance. However, films with small composition fluctuation inside gained a large transmittance conversion range due to their small nanostructured region.
