Characterization and differentiation of the adsorption behavior of crystal violet and methylene blue at the silica/water interface using near field evanescent wave

Photobiocidal-triboelectric nanolayer coating of photosensitizer/silica-alumina for reusable and visible-light-driven antibacterial/antiviral air filters

Outbreaks of airborne pathogens pose a major threat to public health. Here we present a single-step nanocoating process to endow commercial face mask filters with photobiocidal activity, triboelectric filtration capability, and washability. These functions were successfully achieved with a composite nanolayer of silica-alumina (Si-Al) sol-gel, crystal violet (CV) photosensitizer, and hydrophobic electronegative molecules of 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (PFOTES). The transparent Si-Al matrix strongly immobilized the photosensitizer molecules while dispersing them spatially, thus suppressing self-quenching. During nanolayer formation, PFOTES was anisotropically rearranged on the Si-Al matrix, promoting moisture resistance and triboelectric charging of the Si-Al/PFOTES-CV (SAPC)-coated filter. The SAPC nanolayer stabilized the photoexcited state of the photosensitizer and promoted redox reaction. Compared to pure-photosensitizer-coated filters, the SAPC filter showed substantially higher photobiocidal efficiency (∼99.99 % for bacteria and a virus) and photodurability (∼83 % reduction in bactericidal efficiency for the pure-photosensitizer filter but ∼0.34 % for the SAPC filter after 72 h of light irradiation). Moreover, after five washes with detergent, the SAPC filter maintained its photobiocidal and filtration performance, proving its reusability potential. Therefore, this SAPC nanolayer coating provides a practical strategy for manufacturing an antimicrobial and reusable mask filter for use during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Comparative study of chemically synthesized and low temperature bio-inspired Musa acuminata peel extract mediated zinc oxide nanoparticles for enhanced visible-photocatalytic degradation of organic contaminants in wastewater treatment

Zinc oxide (ZnO) photocatalysts were successfully synthesized via chemical and green, environmentally-benign methods. The work highlights the valorization of banana peel (BP) waste extract as the reducing and capping agents to produce pure, low temperature, highly crystalline, and effective ZnO nanoparticles with superior photocatalytic activities for the removal of hazardous Basic Blue 9 (BB9), crystal violet (CV), and cresol red (CR) dyes in comparison to chemically synthesized ZnO. Their formation and morphologies were verified by various optical spectroscopic and electron microscopic techniques. XRD results revealed that the biosynthesized ZnO exhibited 15.3 nm crystallite size when determined by Scherrer equation, which was smaller than the chemically synthesized ZnO. The FTIR spectra confirmed the presence of biomolecules in the green-mediated catalyst. EDX and XPS analyses verified the purity and chemical composition of ZnO. Nitrogen sorption analysis affirmed the high surface area of bio-inspired ZnO. Maximum removal efficiencies were achieved with 30 mg green ZnO catalyst, 2.0 × 10^-5 M BB9 solution, alkaline pH 12, and irradiation time 90 min. Green-mediated ZnO showed superior photodegradation efficiency and reusability than chemically synthesized ZnO. Therefore, this economical, environment-friendly photocatalyst is applicable for the removal of organic contaminants in wastewater treatment under visible light irradiation.

A thixotropic supramolecular metallogel with a 2D sheet morphology: iodine sequestration and column based dye separation

Sequestration of hazardous radioactive iodine and dye separation to reduce industrial waste through reutilization is pivotal for environmental safety. In this regard, herein, the synthesis of a new waterborne ultrasensitive supramolecular metallogel (Mg@DEOA) with a 2D sheet morphology is accomplished through direct mixing of a low molecular weight gelator diethanolamine and magnesium nitrate hexahydrate. This porous metallogel (180 m2 g-1) exhibits thixotropic properties and is injectable. The material was found to be an effective (587 mg g-1) host matrix for iodine sequestration from solution. Moreover, the Mg@DEOA xerogel was used to efficiently remove rhodamine B from a mixture of dyes with high separation factors through a xerogel packed column and as an adsorbent material for water-soluble dyes and CO. This column based application demonstrated by the metallogel could be useful for practical industrial dye-separation.

L-Ascorbic Acid-g-Polyaniline Mesoporous Silica Nanocomposite for Efficient Removal of Crystal Violet: A Batch and Fixed Bed Breakthrough Studies

In the present study, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) synthesized through sol-gel process and calcined at 600 °C were further surface functionalized by a copolymer chain of L-ascorbic acid (AS) and polyaniline (PAni) by in situ free radical oxidative polymerization reaction. The surface modification of MSNs by AS-g-PAni was confirmed by using various analytical techniques, namely FTIR, XRD, SEM-EDX, TEM and AFM. The composition of AS-g-PAni@MS was found to be composed of C (52.53%), N (20.30%), O (25.69%) and Si (1.49%), with 26.42 nm as the particle size. Further, it was applied for the adsorption of crystal violet (CV) dye under batch, as well as fixed bed method. RSM-BBD was taken into consideration, to optimize the various operational parameters effecting the adsorption through batch method. To explore maximum efficiency of the material, it was further subjected to adsorption of CV under fixed bed method, using the variable bed heights of 3.7, 5.4 and 8.1 cm. Based on high value of regression coefficient (R2) and low value of RMSE given as (0.99, 0.02) for 3.7 cm, (0.99, 0.03), the breakthrough data were very well defined by the Thomas model, with optimum concurrence of stoichiometric adsorption capacity values. The external mass transfer equilibrium data were well fitted by the Langmuir model, with maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 88.42 mg g-1 at 303K, 92.51 mg g-1 at 313 K, 107.41 mg g-1 at 313 K and 113.25 mg g-1 at 333 K. The uptake of CV by AS-g-PAni@MS was well defined by pseudo second order model with rate constant K2 = 0.003 L mg-1 min-1 for 50 and 0.003 L mg-1 min-1 for 60 mg L-1 CV. The adsorption reaction was endothermic with enthalpy (ΔH) value of 3.62 KJ mol-1 and highly efficient for treatment of CV-contaminated water for more the five consecutive cycles.

Surface-Enhanced Absorption Spectroscopy for Optical Fiber Sensing

Visible and near-infrared spectroscopy are widely used for sensing applications but suffer from poor signal-to-noise ratios for the detection of compounds with low concentrations. Enhancement by surface plasmon resonance is a popular technique that can be utilized to increase the signal of absorption spectroscopy due to the increased near-field created close to the plasmons. Despite interest in surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS), the method is usually applied in lab setups rather than real-life sensing situations. This study aimed to achieve enhanced absorption from plasmons on a fiber-optic probe and thus move closer to applications of SEIRAS. A tapered coreless fiber coated with a 100 nm Au film supported signal enhancement at visible wavelengths. An increase in absorption was shown for two dyes spanning concentrations from 5 × 10⁻⁸ mol/L to 8 × 10⁻⁴ mol/L: Rhodamine 6G and Crystal Violet. In the presence of the Au film, the absorbance signal was 2–3 times higher than from an identically tapered uncoated fiber. The results confirm that the concept of SEIRAS can be implemented on an optical fiber probe, enabling enhanced signal detection in remote sensing applications.
