Fabrication of bioactive 3D printed porous titanium implants with Sr ion-incorporated zeolite coatings for bone ingrowth

Stability, biomechanics and biocompatibility analysis following different preparation strategies of hierarchical zeolite coatings on titanium alloy surfaces

Traditional titanium alloy implant surfaces are inherently smooth and often lack effective osteoinductive properties. To overcome these limitations, coating technologies are frequently employed to enhance the efficiency of bone integration at the implant-host bone interface. Hierarchical zeolites, characterized by their chemical stability, can be applied to 3D-printed porous titanium alloy (pTi) surfaces as coating. The resulting novel implants with a "microporous-mesoporous-macroporous" spatial gradient structure can influence the behavior of adjacent cells; thereby, promoting the integration of bone at the implant interface. Consequently, a thorough exploration of various preparation methods is warranted for hierarchical zeolite coatings with respect to biocompatibility, coating stability, and osteogenesis. In this study, we employed three methods: in situ crystal growth, secondary growth, and layer-by-layer assembly, to construct hierarchical zeolite coatings on pTi, resulting in the development of a gradient structure. The findings of this investigation unequivocally demonstrated that the LBL-coating method consistently produced coatings characterized by superior uniformity, heightened surface roughness, and increased hydrophilicity, as well as increased biomechanical properties. These advantages considerably amplified cell adhesion, spreading, osteogenic differentiation, and mineralization of MC3T3-E1 cells, presenting superior biological functionality when compared to alternative coating methods. The outcomes of this research provide a solid theoretical basis for the clinical translation of hierarchical zeolite coatings in surface modifications for orthopedic implants.

Application of Zeolites and Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks in Dentistry-A Narrative Review

Zeolites and zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are crystalline aluminosilicates with porous structure, which are closely linked with nanomaterials. They are characterized by enhanced ion exchange capacity, physical-chemical stability, thermal stability and biocompatibility, making them a promising material for dental applications. This review aimed to provide an overview of the application of zeolites and ZIFs in dentistry. The common zeolite compounds for dental application include silver zeolite, zinc zeolite, calcium zeolite and strontium zeolite. The common ZIFs for dental application include ZIF-8 and ZIF-67. Zeolites and ZIFs have been employed in various areas of dentistry, such as restorative dentistry, endodontics, prosthodontics, implantology, periodontics, orthodontics and oral surgery. In restorative dentistry, zeolites and ZIFs are used as antimicrobial additives in dental adhesives and restorative materials. In endodontics, zeolites are used in root-end fillings, root canal irritants, root canal sealers and bone matrix scaffolds for peri-apical diseases. In prosthodontics, zeolites can be incorporated into denture bases, tissue conditioners, soft denture liners and dental prostheses. In implantology, zeolites and ZIFs are applied in dental implants, bone graft materials, bone adhesive hydrogels, drug delivery systems and electrospinning. In periodontics, zeolites can be applied as antibacterial agents for deep periodontal pockets, while ZIFs can be embedded in guided tissue regeneration membranes and guided bone regeneration membranes. In orthodontics, zeolites can be applied in orthodontic appliances. Additionally, for oral surgery, zeolites can be used in oral cancer diagnostic marker membranes, maxillofacial prosthesis silicone elastomer and tooth extraction medicines, while ZIFs can be incorporated to osteogenic glue or used as a carrier for antitumour drugs. In summary, zeolites have a broad application in dentistry and are receiving more attention from clinicians and researchers.

Stress-dependent design and optimization methodology of gradient porous implant and application in femoral stem

Gradient porous structure made by additive manufacturing (AM) technology is potential to improve the long-term stability of orthopaedic implants through bone ingrowth while maintaining mechanical safety. In this study, a parametrical optimization methodology for the customized gradient porous implants was developed based on a stress-dependent design algorithm. Clinical requirements and manufacturing capabilities of AM were considered in the design procedure. A femoral stem with a minimum bone loss proportion of 2.4% by optimizing the control parameters. This study provided a feasible and flexible design approach for the customized implant with gradient porous structure or material components.

Characterization of Magnesium and Zinc Forms of Sodalite Coatings on Ti6Al4V ELI for Potential Application in the Release of Drugs for Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is the most common metabolic disease of the skeletal system and is characterized by impaired bone strength. This translates into an increased risk of low-energy fractures, which means fractures caused by disproportionate force. This disease is quite insidious, its presence is usually detected only at an advanced stage, where treatment with pharmaceuticals does not produce sufficient results. It is obligatory to replace the weakened bone with an implant. For this reason, it is necessary to look at the possibilities of surface modification used in tissue engineering, which, in combination with the drugs for osteoporosis, i.e., bisphosphonates, may constitute a new and effective method for preventing the deterioration of the osteoporotic state. To achieve this purpose, titanium implants coated with magnesium or zinc zeolite were prepared. Both the sorption and release profiles differed depending on the type of ion in the zeolite structure. The successful release of risedronate from the materials at a low level was proven. It can be concluded that the proposed solution will allow the preparation of endoprostheses for patients with bone diseases such as osteoporosis.

Synthesis and characterization of gentamicin loaded ZSM-5 scaffold: Cytocompatibility and antibacterial activity

Porous structure, biocompatibility and biodegradability, large surface area, and drug-loading ability are some remarkable properties of zeolite structure, making it a great possible option for bone tissue engineering. Herein, we evaluated the potential application of the ZSM-5 scaffold encapsulated GEN with high porosity structure and significant antibacterial properties. The space holder process has been employed as a new fabrication method with interconnected pores and suitable mechanical properties. In this study, for the first time, ZSM-5 scaffolds with GEN drug-loading were fabricated with the space holder method. The results showed excellent open porosity in the range of 70-78% for different GEN concentrations and appropriate mechanical properties. Apatite formation on the scaffold surface was determined with Simulation body fluid (SBF), and a new bone-like apatite layer shaping on all samples confirmed the in vitro bioactivity of ZSM-5-GEN scaffolds. Also, antibacterial properties were investigated against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The incorporation of various amounts of GEN increased the inhibition zone from 24 to 28 (for E. coli) and 26 to 37 (for S. aureus). In the culture with MG63 cells, great cell viability and high cell proliferation after 7 days of culture were determined.

A review on in vitro/in vivo response of additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V alloy

Bone replacement using porous and solid metallic implants, such as Ti-alloy implants, is regarded as one of the most practical therapeutic approaches in biomedical engineering. The bone is a complex tissue with various mechanical properties based on the site of action. Patient-specific Ti-6Al-4V constructs may address the key needs in bone treatment for having customized implants that mimic the complex structure of the natural tissue and diminish the risk of implant failure. This review focuses on the most promising methods of fabricating such patient-specific Ti-6Al-4V implants using additive manufacturing (AM) with a specific emphasis on the popular subcategory, which is powder bed fusion (PBF). Characteristics of the ideal implant to promote optimized tissue-implant interactions, as well as physical, mechanical/chemical treatments and modifications will be discussed. Accordingly, such investigations will be classified into 3B-based approaches (Biofunctionality, Bioactivity, and Biostability), which mainly govern native body response and ultimately the success in implantation.

Zeolites: A series of promising biomaterials in bone tissue engineering

As an important worldwide medical issue, bone defect exhibits a variety of physical and psychological consequences on sufferers. Some features of clinical treatments including bone grafting and limb shortening are not satisfactory. Recently, bone tissue engineering has been considered as the most effective approach to dealing with the issue of bone deformities. Meanwhile, a variety of biomaterials have been rationally designed and created for the bone regeneration and tissue repairing. Among all these admirable biomaterials for bone remodeling, zeolite-based materials can serve as efficient scaffold candidates with excellent osteo-inductivity. In addition, the porous nature and high biocompatibility of zeolites endow them with the ability as ideal substrates for cell adhesion and proliferation. More importantly, zeolites are investigated as potential coating materials for implants because they have been proven to increase osteo-conductivity and aid in local elastic modeling. Last but not least, zeolites can also be used to treat bone disorders and act as dietary supplements during the practical applications. Accordingly, numerous benefits of zeolite prompt us to summarize their recent biomedical progress including but not limited to the distinguishing characteristics, broad classifications, as well as promising usages in bone tissue engineering.

Strong adhesive and drug-loaded hydrogels for enhancing bone-implant interface fixation and anti-infection properties

The bonding strength of the bone-titanium (Ti) implant interface is critical for patients undergoing joint replacement. However, current bone adhesives used in clinic have shortcomings, such as biological inertness, cytotoxicity, and lack of osteogenic ability. In this study, a simple and low-cost hydrogel-based bone adhesive was prepared to improve the osseointegration ability and anti-infection ability of the bone-implant interface. A multifunctional hydrogel was prepared by incorporating nano-hydroxyapatite (HA) on polyethyleneimine (PEI) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) (PEI/PAA-HA). It was shown that PEI/PAA-HA hydrogel exhibited good self-healing and strong adhesive ability. The adhesive strengths of bone-Ti and Ti-Ti were measured as 2.30 ± 0.15 MPa and 1.07 ± 0.07 MPa, respectively. Vancomycin (VAN) was loaded into the PEI/PAA-HA hydrogel (PEI/PAA-HA-VAN) via a simple immersion method. The PEI/PAA-HA-VAN showed excellent antibacterial effect by sustained release of VAN. In addition, the PEI/PAA-HA-VAN hydrogel exhibited excellent cytocompatibility promoting the expression of osteogenic genes and the deposition of mineralized matrix. Collectively, this strong adhesive hydrogel showed great potential in enhancing bone-implant interface fixation.

The Promotion of Mechanical Properties by Bone Ingrowth in Additive-Manufactured Titanium Scaffolds

Although the initial mechanical properties of additive-manufactured (AM) metal scaffolds have been thoroughly studied and have become a cornerstone in the design of porous orthopaedic implants, the potential promotion of the mechanical properties of the scaffolds by bone ingrowth has barely been studied. In this study, the promotion of bone ingrowth on the mechanical properties of AM titanium alloy scaffolds was investigated through in vivo experiments and numerical simulation. On one hand, the osseointegration characteristics of scaffolds with architectures of body-centred cubic (BCC) and diamond were compared through animal experiments in which the mechanical properties of both scaffolds were not enhanced by the four-week implantation. On the other hand, the influences of the type and morphology of bone tissue in the BCC scaffolds on its mechanical properties were investigated by the finite element model of osseointegrated scaffolds, which was calibrated by the results of biomechanical testing. Significant promotion of the mechanical properties of AM metal scaffolds was only found when cortical bone filled the pores in the scaffolds. This paper provides a numerical prediction method to investigate the effect of bone ingrowth on the mechanical properties of AM porous implants, which might be valuable for the design of porous implants.

Antibacterial Activity and Cell Responses of Vancomycin-Loaded Alginate Coating on ZSM-5 Scaffold for Bone Tissue Engineering Applications

Despite the significant advancement in bone tissue engineering, it is still challenging to find a desired scaffold with suitable mechanical and biological properties, efficient bone formation in the defect area, and antibacterial resistivity. In this study, the zeolite (ZSM-5) scaffold was developed using the space holder method, and a novel vancomycin-loaded alginate coating was developed on it to promote their characteristics. Our results demonstrated the importance of alginate coating on the microstructure, mechanical, and cellular properties of the ZSM-5 scaffold. For instance, a three-fold increase in the compressive strength of coated scaffolds was observed compared to the uncoated ZSM-5. After the incorporation of vancomycin into the alginate coating, the scaffold revealed significant antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The inhibition zone increased to 35 mm. Resets also demonstrated 74 ± 2.5% porosity, 4.3 ± 0.07 MPa strength in compressive conditions, acceptable cellular properties (72.3 ± 0.2 (%control) cell viability) after 7 days, good cell attachment, and calcium deposition. Overall, the results revealed that this scaffold could be a great candidate for bone tissue engineering.

[Research progress of in-situ three dimensional bio-printing technology for repairing bone and cartilage injuries]

OBJECTIVE

To review the research progress of in-situ three dimensional (3D) bio-printing technology in the repair of bone and cartilage injuries.

METHODS

Literature on the application of in-situ 3D bio-printing technology to repair bone and cartilage injuries at home and abroad in recent years was reviewed, analyzed, and summarized.

RESULTS

As a new tissue engineering technology, in-situ 3D bio-printing technology is mainly applied to repair bone, cartilage, and skin tissue injuries. By combining biomaterials, bioactive substances, and cells, tissue is printed directly at the site of injury or defect. At present, the research on the technology mainly focuses on printing mode, bio-ink, and printing technology; the application research in the field of bone and cartilage mainly focuses on pre-vascularization, adjusting the composition of bio-ink, improving scaffold structure, printing technology, loading drugs, cells, and bioactive factors, so as to promote tissue injury repair.

CONCLUSION

Multiple animal experiments have confirmed that in-situ 3D bio-printing technology can construct bone and cartilage tissue grafts in a real-time, rapid, and minimally invasive manner. In the future, it is necessary to continue to develop bio-inks suitable for specific tissue grafts, as well as combine with robotics, fusion imaging, and computer-aided medicine to improve printing efficiency.

Advanced Surface Modification for 3D-Printed Titanium Alloy Implant Interface Functionalization

With the development of three-dimensional (3D) printed technology, 3D printed alloy implants, especially titanium alloy, play a critical role in biomedical fields such as orthopedics and dentistry. However, untreated titanium alloy implants always possess a bioinert surface that prevents the interface osseointegration, which is necessary to perform surface modification to enhance its biological functions. In this article, we discuss the principles and processes of chemical, physical, and biological surface modification technologies on 3D printed titanium alloy implants in detail. Furthermore, the challenges on antibacterial, osteogenesis, and mechanical properties of 3D-printed titanium alloy implants by surface modification are summarized. Future research studies, including the combination of multiple modification technologies or the coordination of the structure and composition of the composite coating are also present. This review provides leading-edge functionalization strategies of the 3D printed titanium alloy implants.

3D-printed porous Ti6Al4V scaffolds for long bone repair in animal models: a systematic review

BACKGROUND

Titanium and its alloys have been widely employed for bone tissue repair and implant manufacturing. The rapid development of three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has allowed fabrication of porous titanium scaffolds with controllable microstructures, which is considered to be an effective method for promoting rapid bone formation and decreasing bone absorption. The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate the osteogenic potential of 3D-printed porous Ti6Al4V (Ti64) scaffold for repairing long bone defects in animal models and to investigate the influential factors that might affect its osteogenic capacity.

METHODS

Electronic literature search was conducted in the following databases: PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase up to September 2021. The SYRCLE's tool and the modified CAMARADES list were used to assess the risk of bias and methodological quality, respectively. Due to heterogeneity of the selected studies in relation to protocol and outcomes evaluated, a meta-analysis could not be performed.

RESULTS

The initial search revealed 5858 studies. Only 46 animal studies were found to be eligible based on the inclusion criteria. Rabbit was the most commonly utilized animal model. A pore size of around 500-600 µm and porosity of 60-70% were found to be the most ideal parameters for designing the Ti64 scaffold, where both dodecahedron and diamond pores optimally promoted osteogenesis. Histological analysis of the scaffold in a rabbit model revealed that the maximum bone area fraction reached 59.3 ± 8.1% at weeks 8-10. Based on micro-CT assessment, the maximum bone volume fraction was found to be 34.0 ± 6.0% at weeks 12.

CONCLUSIONS

Ti64 scaffold might act as a promising medium for providing sufficient mechanical support and a stable environment for new bone formation in long bone defects. Trail registration The study protocol was registered in the PROSPERO database under the number CRD42020194100.

Analytical Techniques for the Characterization of Bioactive Coatings for Orthopaedic Implants

The development of bioactive coatings for orthopedic implants has been of great interest in recent years in order to achieve both early- and long-term osseointegration. Numerous bioactive materials have been investigated for this purpose, along with loading coatings with therapeutic agents (active compounds) that are released into the surrounding media in a controlled manner after surgery. This review initially focuses on the importance and usefulness of characterization techniques for bioactive coatings, allowing the detailed evaluation of coating properties and further improvements. Various advanced analytical techniques that have been used to characterize the structure, interactions, and morphology of the designed bioactive coatings are comprehensively described by means of time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), 3D tomography, quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), coating adhesion, and contact angle (CA) measurements. Secondly, the design of controlled-release systems, the determination of drug release kinetics, and recent advances in drug release from bioactive coatings are addressed as the evaluation thereof is crucial for improving the synthesis parameters in designing optimal bioactive coatings.

Evaluation of bone formation on orthopedic implant surfaces using an ex-vivo bone bioreactor system

Recent advances in materials and manufacturing processes have allowed the fabrication of intricate implant surfaces to facilitate bony attachment. However, refinement and evaluation of these new design strategies are hindered by the cost and complications of animal studies, particularly during early iterations in the development process. To address this problem, we have previously constructed and validated an ex-vivo bone bioreactor culture system that can maintain the viability of bone samples for an extended period ex-vivo. In this study, we investigated the mineralization of a titanium wire mesh scaffold under both static and dynamic culturing using our ex vivo bioreactor system. Thirty-six cancellous bone cores were harvested from bovine metatarsals at the time of slaughter and divided into five groups under the following conditions: Group 1) Isolated bone cores placed in static culture, Group 2) Unloaded bone cores placed in static culture in contact with a fiber-mesh metallic scaffold, Group 3) Bone cores placed in contact with a fiber-mesh metallic scaffold under the constant pressure of 150 kPa, Group 4) Bone core placed in contact with a fiber-mesh metallic scaffold and exposed to cyclic loading with continuous perfusion flow of media within the ex-vivo culture system and Group 5) Bone core evaluated on Day 0 to serve as a positive control for comparison with all other groups at weeks 4 and 7. Bone samples within Groups 1-4 were incubated for 4 and 7 weeks and then evaluated using histological examination (H&E) and the Live-Dead assay (Life Technologies). Matrix deposits on the metallic scaffolds were examined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while the chemical composition of the matrix was measured using energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX). We found that the viability of bone cores was maintained after seven weeks of loading in our ex vivo system. In addition, SEM images revealed crystallite-like structures on the dynamically loaded metal coupons (Group 4), corresponding to the initial stages of mineralization. EDX results further confirmed the presence of carbon at the interface and calcium phosphates in the matrix. We conclude that a bone bioreactor can be used as an alternate tool for in-vivo bone ingrowth studies of new implant surfaces or coatings.

A highly stable and flexible zeolite electrolyte solid-state Li-air battery

Solid-state lithium (Li)-air batteries are recognized as a next-generation solution for energy storage to address the safety and electrochemical stability issues that are encountered in liquid battery systems^1-4. However, conventional solid electrolytes are unsuitable for use in solid-state Li-air systems owing to their instability towards lithium metal and/or air, as well as the difficulty in constructing low-resistance interfaces⁵. Here we present an integrated solid-state Li-air battery that contains an ultrathin, high-ion-conductive lithium-ion-exchanged zeolite X (LiX) membrane as the sole solid electrolyte. This electrolyte is integrated with cast lithium as the anode and carbon nanotubes as the cathode using an in situ assembly strategy. Owing to the intrinsic chemical stability of the zeolite, degeneration of the electrolyte from the effects of lithium or air is effectively suppressed. The battery has a capacity of 12,020 milliamp hours per gram of carbon nanotubes, and has a cycle life of 149 cycles at a current density of 500 milliamps per gram and at a capacity of 1,000 milliamp hours per gram. This cycle life is greater than those of batteries based on lithium aluminium germanium phosphate (12 cycles) and organic electrolytes (102 cycles) under the same conditions. The electrochemical performance, flexibility and stability of zeolite-based Li-air batteries confer practical applicability that could extend to other energy-storage systems, such as Li-ion, Na-air and Na-ion batteries.

Impact of exogenous metal ions on peri-implant bone metabolism: a review

The development of effective methods to promote the osseointegration of dental implants by surface modification is an area of intense research in dental materials science. Exogenous metal ions present in the implant and surface modifications are closely related to the bone metabolism around the implant. In the complex oral microenvironment, the release of metal ions caused by continuous corrosion of dental implants has an unfavorable impact on the surrounding tissue, and then affects osseointegration, leading to bad results such as loosening and falling off in the late stage of the implant. Besides, these ions can even be distributed in distant tissues and organs. Currently, surface modification techniques are being developed that involve different processing technologies including the introduction of exogenous metal ions with different properties onto the surface of implants to improve performance. However, most metal elements have some level of biological toxicity and can only be used within a safe concentration range to exert the optimum biological effects on recipients. In this paper, we review the adverse effects of metal ions on osseointegration and highlight the emerging applications for metal elements in improving the performance of dental implants.

TiO2 bioactive implant surfaces doped with specific amount of Sr modulate mineralization

One of the main problems that remain in the implant industry is poor osseointegration due to bioinertness of implants. In order to promote bioactivity, calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P) and strontium (Sr) were incorporated into a TiO₂ porous layer produced by micro-arc oxidation. Ca and P as bioactive elements are already well reported in the literature, however, the knowledge of the effect of Sr is still limited. In the present work, the effect of various amounts of Sr was evaluated and the morphology, chemical composition and crystal structure of the oxide layer were investigated. Furthermore, in vitro studies were carried out using human osteoblast-like cells. The oxide layer formed showed a triplex structure, where higher incorporation of Sr increased Ca/P ratio, amount of rutile and promoted the formation of SrTiO₃ compound. Biological tests revealed that lower concentrations of Sr did not compromise initial cell adhesion neither viability and interestingly improved mineralization. However, higher concentration of Sr (and consequent higher amount of rutile) showed to induce collagen secretion but with compromised mineralization, possibly due to a delayed mineralization process or induced precipitation of deficient hydroxyapatite. Ca-P-TiO₂ porous layer with less concentration of Sr seems to be an ideal candidate for bone implants.

Applications of Zeolites to C1 Chemistry: Recent Advances, Challenges, and Opportunities

C1 chemistry, which is the catalytic transformation of C1 molecules including CO, CO₂ , CH₄ , CH₃ OH, and HCOOH, plays an important role in providing energy and chemical supplies while meeting environmental requirements. Zeolites are highly efficient solid catalysts used in the chemical industry. The design and development of zeolite-based mono-, bi-, and multifunctional catalysts has led to a booming application of zeolite-based catalysts to C1 chemistry. Combining the advantages of zeolites and metallic catalytic species has promoted the catalytic production of various hydrocarbons (e.g., methane, light olefins, aromatics, and liquid fuels) and oxygenates (e.g., methanol, dimethyl ether, formic acid, and higher alcohols) from C1 molecules. The key zeolite descriptors that influence catalytic performance, such as framework topologies, nanoconfinement effects, Brønsted acidities, secondary-pore systems, particle sizes, extraframework cations and atoms, hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity, and proximity between acid and metallic sites are discussed to provide a deep understanding of the significance of zeolites to C1 chemistry. An outlook regarding challenges and opportunities for the conversion of C1 resources using zeolite-based catalysts to meet emerging energy and environmental demands is also presented.

Sol-gel-assisted micro-arc oxidation synthesis and characterization of a hierarchically rough structured Ta-Sr coating for biomaterials

Tantalum (Ta) is an element with high chemical stability and ductility that is used in orthopedic biomaterials. When utilized, it can produce a bioactive surface and enhance cell-material interactions, but currently, there exist scarce effective methods to introduce the Ta element onto the surface of implants. This work reported a sol-gel-assisted approach combined with micro-arc oxidation (MAO) to introduce Ta onto the surface of the titanium (TC4) substrate. Specifically, this technique produced a substrate with a hierarchically rough structured topography and introduced strontium ions into the film. The films were uniform and continuous with numerous crater-like micropores. Compared with the TC4 sample (196 ± 35 nm), the roughness of Ta (734 ± 51 nm) and Ta-Sr (728 ± 85 nm) films was significantly higher, and both films (Ta and Ta-Sr) showed increased hydrophilicity when compared with TC4, promoting cell attachment. Additionally, the in vitro experiments indicated that Ta and Ta-Sr films have the potential to enhance the recruitment of cells in the initial culture stages, and improve cell proliferation. Overall, this work demonstrated that the application of Ta and Ta-Sr films to orthopedic implants has the potential to increase the lifetime of the implants. Zeolite in tissue engineering: Opportunities and challenges

Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine follow a multidisciplinary attitude to the expansion and application of new materials for the treatment of different tissue defects. Typically, proper tissue regeneration is accomplished through concurrent biocompatibility and positive cellular activity. This can be resulted by the smart selection of platforms among bewildering arrays of structural possibilities with various porosity properties (ie, pore size, pore connectivity, etc). Among diverse porous structures, zeolite is known as a microporous tectosilicate that can potentially provide a biological microenvironment in tissue engineering applications. In addition, zeolite has been particularly appeared promising in wound dressing and bone‐ and tooth‐oriented scaffolds. The wide range of composition and hierarchical pore structure renders the zeolitic materials a unique character, particularly, for tissue engineering purposes. Despite such unique features, research on zeolitic platforms for tissue engineering has not been classically presented. In this review, we overview, classify, and categorize zeolitic platforms employed in biological and tissue engineering applications.

Improved Osteogenesis of Selective-Laser-Melted Titanium Alloy by Coating Strontium-Doped Phosphate With High-Efficiency Air-Plasma Treatment

Surface treatment and bioactive metal ion incorporation are effective methods for the modification of titanium alloys to be used as biomaterials. However, few studies have demonstrated the use of air-plasma treatment in orthopedic biomaterial development. Additionally, no study has performed a direct comparison between unmodified titanium alloys and air-plasma-treated alloys with respect to their biocompatibility and osteogenesis. In this study, the biological activities of unmodified titanium alloys, air-plasma-treated titanium alloys, and air-plasma-treated strontium-doped/undoped calcium phosphate (CaP) coatings were compared. The strontium-doped CaP (Sr-CaP) coating on titanium alloys were produced by selective laser melting (SLM) technology as well as micro-arc oxidation (MAO) and air-plasma treatment. The results revealed that rapid air-plasma treatment improved the biocompatibility of titanium alloys and that Sr-CaP coating together with air-plasma treatment significantly enhanced both the biocompatibility and osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). Overall, this study demonstrated that low temperature air-plasma treatment is a fast and effective surface modification which improves the biocompatibility of titanium alloys. Additionally, air-plasma-treated Sr-CaP coatings have numerous practical applications and may provide researchers with new tools to assist in the development of orthopedic implants.

Advanced Black Phosphorus Nanomaterials for Bone Regeneration

Bone regeneration remains a great clinical challenge. Two-dimensional materials, especially graphene and its derivative graphene oxide, have been widely used for bone regeneration. Since its discovery in 2014, black phosphorus (BP) nanomaterials including BP nanosheets and BP quantum dots have attracted considerable scientific attention and are considered as prospective graphene substitutes. BP nanomaterials exhibit numerous advantages such as excellent optical and mechanical properties, electrical conductivity, excellent biocompatibility, and good biodegradation, all of which make them particularly attractive in biomedicine. In this review, we comprehensively summarize recent advances of BP-based nanomaterials in bone regeneration. The advantages are reviewed, the different synthesis methods of BP are summarized, and the applications to promote bone regeneration are highlighted. Finally, the existing challenges and perspectives of BP in bone regeneration are briefly discussed.

Antibacterial effects of silver incorporated zeolite coatings on 3D printed porous stainless steels

Functionalization of porous metals with antibacterial coatings is hotly pursued in recent decade. Here we fabricated a highly porous stainless steel component by selective laser melting and then coated with silver incorporated zeolite by in situ hydrothermal crystallization method. The morphology of their surface was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. The inhibition of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were identified by bacterial viability studies after 24 h of incubation. More importantly, the obtained coatings show better osteointegration by spreading bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) after cultured with different scaffold extract solutions for 1, 3, and 5 days. These results suggest that silver incorporated zeolite coatings on 3D printed porous stainless steels exhibit better antibacterial activity and biocompatibility, showing potential application in the field of medical implant materials.

Flexible Multifunctional Porous Nanofibrous Membranes for High-Efficiency Air Filtration

Particulate matter (PM) discharged along with the rapid industrialization and urbanization hazardously threatens ecosystems and human health. Membrane-based filtration technology has been proved to be an effective approach to capture PM from the polluted air. However, the fabrication of filtration membranes with excellent reusability and antibacterial activity has rarely been reported. Herein, the flexible multifunctional porous nanofibrous membranes were fabricated by embedding Ag nanoparticles into the electrospun porous SiO₂-TiO₂ nanofibers via an impregnation method, which integrated the abilities of PM filtration and antibacterial performance. Compared with the reported air filters, the resultant membrane (Ag@STPNM) with high surface polarity and porous structure possessed the low density, high removal efficiency, and small pressure drop. For instance, the removal efficiency and the pressure drop of Ag@STPNM with a basis weight of only 3.9 g m^-2 for PM_2.5 reached 98.84% and 59 Pa, respectively. In terms of the excellent thermal stability of Ag@STPNM, the adsorbed PM could be removed simply by a calcination process. The filtration performance of Ag@STPNM kept stable during five purification-regeneration cycles and the long-time filtration for 12 h, exhibiting excellent recyclability and durability. Furthermore, the embedded Ag nanoparticles could achieve the effective resistance to the breeding of bacteria on Ag@STPNM, giving the bacteriostatic rate of 95.8%. Therefore, Ag@STPNM holds promising potentials as a highly efficient, reusable, and antibacterial air filter in the practical purification of the indoor environment or personal air.

Fabricating Mechanically Robust Binder-Free Structured Zeolites by 3D Printing Coupled with Zeolite Soldering: A Superior Configuration for CO2 Capture

3D-printing technology is a promising approach for rapidly and precisely manufacturing zeolite adsorbents with desirable configurations. However, the trade-off among mechanical stability, adsorption capacity, and diffusion kinetics remains an elusive challenge for the practical application of 3D-printed zeolites. Herein, a facile "3D printing and zeolite soldering" strategy is developed to construct mechanically robust binder-free zeolite monoliths (ZM-BF) with hierarchical structures, which can act as a superior configuration for CO2 capture. Halloysite nanotubes are employed as printing ink additives, which serve as both reinforcing materials and precursor materials for integrating ZM-BF by ultrastrong interfacial "zeolite-bonds" subjected to hydrothermal treatment. ZM-BF exhibits outstanding mechanical properties with robust compressive strength up to 5.24 MPa, higher than most of the reported structured zeolites with binders. The equilibrium CO2 uptake of ZM-BF reaches up to 5.58 mmol g-1 (298 K, 1 bar), which is the highest among all reported 3D-printed CO2 adsorbents. Strikingly, the dynamic adsorption breakthrough tests demonstrate the superiority of ZM-BF over commercial benchmark zeolites for flue gas purification and natural gas and biogas upgrading. This work introduces a facile strategy for designing and fabricating high-performance hierarchically structured zeolite adsorbents and even catalysts for practical applications.

Effect of Strontium Substitution on the Physicochemical Properties and Bone Regeneration Potential of 3D Printed Calcium Silicate Scaffolds

In this study, we synthesized strontium-contained calcium silicate (SrCS) powder and fabricated SrCS scaffolds with controlled precise structures using 3D printing techniques. SrCS scaffolds were shown to possess increased mechanical properties as compared to calcium silicate (CS) scaffolds. Our results showed that SrCS scaffolds had uniform interconnected macropores (~500 µm) with a compressive strength 2-times higher than that of CS scaffolds. The biological behaviors of SrCS scaffolds were assessed using the following characteristics: apatite-precipitating ability, cytocompatibility, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). With CS scaffolds as controls, our results indicated that SrCS scaffolds demonstrated good apatite-forming bioactivity with sustained release of Si and Sr ions. The in vitro tests demonstrated that SrCS scaffolds possessed excellent biocompatibility which in turn stimulated adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation of MSCs. In addition, the SrCS scaffolds were able to enhance MSCs synthesis of osteoprotegerin (OPG) and suppress macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) thus disrupting normal bone homeostasis which led to enhanced bone formation over bone resorption. Implanted SrCS scaffolds were able to promote new blood vessel growth and new bone regeneration within 4 weeks after implantation in critical-sized rabbit femur defects. Therefore, it was shown that 3D printed SrCS scaffolds with specific controllable structures can be fabricated and SrCS scaffolds had enhanced mechanical property and osteogenesis behavior which makes it a suitable potential candidate for bone regeneration.
