Exposure to a metal analyte in solution, results in PIII abstraction and rapid disruption of the ylide conjugation to promote reversion back to the squaraine dye giving an immediate turn-on colorimetric response. The stoichiometric sensitivity and accessibility of these chemodosimeters constitute effective organic dyes for trace transition metal detection.

Squaraine-Based Optical Sensors: Designer Toolbox for Exploring Ionic and Molecular Recognitions

Small molecule-based chromogenic and fluorogenic probes play an indispensable role in many sensing applications. Ideal optical chemosensors should provide selectivity and sensitivity towards a variety of analytes. Synthetic accessibility and attractive photophysical properties have made squaraine dyes an enticing platform for the development of chemosensors. This review highlights the versatility of modular assemblies of squaraine-based chemosensors and chemodosimeters that take advantage of the availability of various structurally and functionally diverse recognition motifs, as well as utilizing additional recognition capabilities due to the unique structural features of the squaraine ring.

A Phosphine-Mediated Dearomative Skeletal Rearrangement of Dianiline Squaraine Dyes

A phosphorus(III)-mediated dearomatization of ortho-substituted dianiline squaraine dyes results in an unusual skeletal rearrangement to provide exotic, highly conjugated benzofuranone and oxindole scaffolds bearing a C3 side chain comprised of a linear conflagration of an enol, a phosphorus ylide, and 2,4-disubstituted aniline. Employing experimental and computational analysis, a mechanistic evaluation revealed a striking dependence on the acidity of the aniline ortho substituent. Notably, the rearrangement adducts underwent rapid and complete reversion to the parent squaraine in the presence of a Brønsted acid.

Temperature Sensing of Thiolate Addition by Phenolate Merocyanine Dyes: Importance of the Quinone Methide Resonance Structure

Merocyanine (MC) dyes containing an aromatic donor vinyl linked to a cationic acceptor serve as chemosensors for analyte detection. Their electrophilicity permits anion detection through addition reactions that disrupt dye conjugation. Herein, we demonstrate the temperature influence on thiolate addition to MCs containing the N-methylbenzothiazolium (Btz) acceptor. The zwitterionic phenolate dye (PhOBtz) displays impressive temperature sensitivity to thiolate addition, with the brightly colored phenolate favored upon heating and the colorless thiolate adduct favored upon cooling. In contrast, MC dyes containing neutral donors (PhOMeBtz and PhNMe₂Btz) display only moderate temperature sensitivity to thiolate capture and release. Extraction of thermodynamic parameters demonstrates a strong enthalpic driving force for thiolate addition to PhOBtz that is absent for PhOMeBtz and PhNMe₂Btz. Variable temperature ¹H NMR studies demonstrate that PhOBtz adopts the para-quinone methide (p-QM) resonance structure. Thus, thiolate addition to PhOBtz resembles 1,6-conjugate addition to p-QMs which is accompanied by a large increase in the π-stabilization energy upon adduct formation. Manipulation of PhOBtz electrophilicity by attaching chlorine substituents to the phenolate caused the thiolate adducts to dissipate over time for p-QM regeneration. Our work provides new design ideas for the utility of phenolate MC dyes, given that they are carriers of the p-QM electrophile.

Cationic Organophosphorus Chromophores: A Diamond in the Rough among Ionic Dyes

Tunable electron-accepting properties of the cationic phosphorus center, its geometry and unique preparative chemistry that allows combining this unit with diversity of π-conjugated motifs, define the appealing photophysical and electrochemical characteristics of organophosphorus ionic chromophores. This Minireview summarizes the achievements in the synthesis of the π-extended molecules functionalized with P-cationic fragments, modulation of their properties by means of structural modification, and emphasizes the important effect of cation-anion interactions, which can drastically change physical behavior of these two-component systems.
