Abstract
A cobalt-catalyzed intramolecular Markovnikov hydroalkoxycarbonylation and hydroaminocarbonylation of unactivated alkenes has been developed, enabling highly chemo- and regioselective synthesis of α-alkylated γ-lactones and α-alkylated γ-lactams in good yields. The mild reaction conditions allow use of mono-, di- and trisubstituted alkenes bearing a variety of functional groups. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest the reaction proceeds through a CO-mediated hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) and radical-polar crossover (RPC) process, in which a cationic acylcobalt(IV) complex is proposed as the key intermediate.

Abstract
Acyl fluorides are important reagents due to their unique balance between reactivity and stability. Here, we report a copper-catalyzed carbonylative coupling strategy for synthesizing acyl fluorides under photoirradiation. Alkyl iodides were transformed in high yields into acyl fluorides by using a commercially available copper precatalyst (CuBr·SMe2) and a readily available fluoride salt (KF) at ambient temperature and mild CO pressure (6 atm) under blue light irradiation.

Abstract
Carbonylative multifunctionalization of alkenes is an efficient approach to introduce multiple functional groups into one molecule from easily available materials. Herein, we developed an iron-catalyzed radical relay carbonylative cyclization of alkenes with acetamides. Various α-tetralones can be constructed in moderate yields from readily available substrates with an earth-abundant iron salt as the catalyst.

Abstract
Described herein is the development of a visible-light-driven carbonylation of alkyl halides. The exploitation of visible light to activate Pd complexes and the use of formates to serve the dual role of a CO surrogate and a phenoxide source allow the preparation of esters in moderate to good yields. Its relatively mild reaction conditions and the ability to perform this transformation without direct handling of toxic CO gas provide a practical means to access esters from alkyl halides.

Abstract
Radical single carbonylation reactions with CO constitute a direct and robust strategy toward various carbonyl compounds from readily available chemicals, and have been extensively studied over the past decades. However, realizing highly selective catalytic systems for controlled radical double carbonylation reactions has remained a substantial challenge, particularly for the more advanced multicomponent variants, despite their great potential value. Herein, we report a visible-light-driven radical relay five-component radical double aminocarbonylation reaction of unactivated alkenes using CO under metal-free conditions. This protocol provides direct access to valuable γ-trifluoromethyl α-ketoamides with good yields and high chemoselectivity. Crucial was the identification of distinct dual roles of amine coupling partners, sequentially acting as electron donors for the formation of photoactive electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complexes with radical precursors and then as a CO acceptor via nitrogen radical cations to form carbamoyl radicals. Cross-coupling of carbamoyl radicals with the acyl radicals that are formed in an alkene-based relay process affords double aminocarbonylation products.

Abstract
Catalytic carbonylations of aryl electrophiles via C(sp2 )-N cleavage remains a significant challenge. Herein, we demonstrate an aminocarbonylation of aniline-derived trialkylammonium salts promoted by visible light with a simple cobalt catalyst. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions suitable for late-stage functionalization and is amenable to telescoped carbonylations directly from anilines. A range of alkylamines are successful partners, and alkoxycarbonylation is also demonstrated. Mechanistic studies and DFT calculations support a novel mechanism for catalytic carbonylations of aryl electrophiles involving a key visible light-induced carbonyl photodissociation.

Abstract
Carbonylation reactions involving CO as readily available C1 synthons have become one of the most important tools for the construction of carbonyl compounds from feedstock chemicals. Despite numerous catalytic methods for carbonylation reactions proceeding via ionic or radical pathways, an inherent limitation to these methods is the need to control switchable single and double carbonylative formation of value-added products from the same and simple starting materials. Here, we describe a new strategy that exploits photoredox catalysis to regulate the philicity of amine coupling partners to drive switchable radical carbonylation reactions. In double carbonylation, amines were first transformed into nitrogen radical cations by single-electron transfer-oxidation and coupled with CO to form carbamoyl radicals, which further underwent radical cross-coupling with the incipient cyanoalkyl acyl radicals to afford the double carbonylation products. Upon the addition of stoichiometric 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP), DMAP competitively traps the initially formed cyanoalkyl acyl radical to form the relatively stabilized cyanoalkyl acyl-DMAP salts that engaged in the subsequent substitution with the nucleophilic amines to produce the single carbonylation products. The reaction proceeded smoothly with excellent selectivity in the presence of various amine nucleophiles at room temperature, generating valuable amides and α-ketoamides in a versatile and controlled fashion. Combined experimental and computational studies provided mechanistic insights into the possible pathways.

Abstract
Visible-light photoredox catalysis has attracted tremendous interest within the synthetic community. As such, the activation mode potentially provides a more sustainable and efficient platform for the activation of organic molecules, enabling the invention of many controlled radical-involved reactions under mild conditions. In this context, amide synthesis via the strategy of photoredox catalysis has received growing interest due to the ubiquitous presence of this structural motif in numerous natural products, pharmaceuticals and functionalized materials. Employing this strategy, a wide variety of amides can be prepared effectively from halides, arenes and even alkanes under irradiation of visible light. These methods provide a robust alternative to well-established strategies for amide synthesis that involve condensation between a carboxylic acid and amine mediated by a stoichiometric activating agent. In this review, the representative progresses made on the synthesis of amides through visible light-mediated radical reactions are summarized.

Abstract
The acceptorless dehydrogenation of methanol to carbon monoxide and hydrogen was investigated using homogeneous molecular complexes. Complexes of ruthenium and manganese comprising the MACHO ligand framework showed promising activities for this reaction. The molecular ruthenium complex [RuH(CO)(BH4 )(HN(C2 H4 PPh2 )2 )] (Ru-MACHO-BH) achieved up to 3150 turnovers for carbon monoxide and 9230 turnovers for hydrogen formation at 150 °C reaching pressures up to 12 bar when the decomposition was carried out in a closed vessel. Control experiments affirmed that the metal complex mediates the initial fast dehydrogenation of methanol to formaldehyde and methyl formate followed by subsequent slow decarbonylation. Depending on the catalyst and reaction conditions, the CO/H2 ratio in the gas mixture thus varies over a broad range from almost pure hydrogen to the stoichiometric limit of 1:2.

Abstract
A copper-catalyzed alkoxycarbonylation transformation of unactivated alkyl iodides has been developed. Various alkyl iodides can be converted into the corresponding tert-butyl esters in good yields. NaOtBu acts as both a nucleophile and a base. Moreover, other types of aliphatic esters can also be obtained in moderated yields if extra alcohols are added. Both primary and secondary alkyl alcohols can react successfully.

Abstract
Developmental studies are ongoing to discover a way to utilise new N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-Ni complexes as catalysts. Using a bulky NHC ligand, it is possible to synthesise an NHC/phosphine-mixed heteroleptic Ni(II) complex, which can serve as an excellent catalyst for various cross-coupling reactions. During the study of the reaction mechanisms using these Ni complexes, NHC-Ni(I) complexes were accidentally discovered, and it was observed that they exhibit excellent catalytic activity for cross-coupling reactions. The possibility of the presence of NHC-Ni(I) intermediates in these catalytic reaction pathways has been experimentally demonstrated. Depending on the type of reaction, dinuclear Ni(I) and mononuclear Ni(I) complexes can function as intermediates. The results of the investigation of each reaction mechanism are summarised, and the prospects are described.

Abstract
The abundant and inexpensive carbon monoxide (CO) is widely exploited as a C1 source for the synthesis of both fine and bulk chemicals. In this context, photochemical carbonylation reactions have emerged as a powerful tool for the sustainable synthesis of carbonyl-containing compounds (esters, amides, ketones, etc.). This review aims at giving a general overview on visible light-promoted carbonylation reactions in the presence of metal (Palladium, Iridium, Cobalt, Ruthenium, Copper) and organocatalysts as well, highlighting the main features of the presented protocols and providing useful insights on the reaction mechanisms.

Abstract
Transition metal-catalyzed carbonylation reactions represent a direct and atom-economical approach to introduce oxygen functionality into organic compounds, with CO acting as an inexpensive and readily available C1 feedstock. Despite the long history of carbonylation catalysis, including many processes that have been industrialized at bulk scale, there remain several challenges to tackle. For example, noble metals such as Pd, Rh, and Ir are typically used as catalysts for carbonylation reactions, rather than earth-abundant alternatives. Additionally, while carbonylation of C(sp2)-hybridized substrates (e.g., aryl halides) is well-known, carbonylation of unactivated alkyl electrophiles, especially where β-hydride elimination can compete with desired CO migratory insertion at the catalyst site, remains challenging for many systems. Recently, base metal catalysis based on Mn, Co, and other metals has enabled advances in carbonylative coupling of alkyl electrophiles, though the nucleophiles are often limited to alcohols or amines to generate esters or amides as products. Thus, we have targeted base metal-catalyzed carbonylative C-C and C-E (E = N, H, Si, B) coupling reactions as a method for approaching diverse carbonyl compounds of synthetic importance.Initially, we designed a heterobimetallic catalyst platform for carbonylative C-C coupling of alkyl halides with arylboronic esters (i.e., carbonylative Suzuki-Miyaura coupling) to generate aryl alkyl ketones. Subsequently, we developed multicomponent carbonylation reactions of alkyl halides using NHC-Cu catalysts (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene). These reactions operate by radical mechanisms, converting alkyl halides into either acyl radical or acyl halide intermediates that undergo subsequent C-C or C-E coupling at the Cu site. This mechanistic paradigm is relatively novel in the metal-catalyzed carbonylation area, allowing us to discover a previously unexplored chemical space in carbonylative coupling catalysis. We have successfully developed the following reactions: (a) hydrocarbonylative coupling of alkynes with alkyl halides; (b) borocarbonylative coupling of alkynes with alkyl halides; (c) reductive aminocarbonylation of alkyl halides with nitroarenes; (d) reductive carbonylation of alkyl halides; (e) carbonylative silylation of alkyl halides; (f) carbonylative borylation of alkyl halides. These reactions provide a broad range of valuable products including ketones, allylic alcohols, β-borylenones, amides, alcohols, acylsilanes, and acylborons in an efficient manner. Notably, the preparation of some of these products has previously required multistep syntheses, harsh conditions, or specialized reagents. By contrast, the multicomponent coupling platform that we have developed requires only readily available building blocks and rapidly increases molecular complexity in a single synthetic manipulation.

Abstract
Various β-indolyl sulfoximidoyl amides were efficiently prepared from ortho-iodoanilines, propargyl bromides, 1 atm of CO, and substituted NH-sulfoximines, through a palladium-catalyzed indole annulation/carbonyl insertion/C-N bond formation cascade. Mostly good to high yields of the products were obtained through this multi-step, one-pot reaction protocol under very gentle reaction conditions. The obtained β-indolyl sulfoximidoyl amides could be converted into biologically interesting sulfoximine analogues that contain a tryptamine moiety.

Abstract
The dicarbonylation of 1,3‐butadiene to adipic acid derivatives offers the potential for a more cost‐efficient and environmentally benign industrial process. However, the complex reaction network of regioisomeric carbonylation and isomerization pathways, make a selective and direct transformation particularly difficult. Here, we report surprising solvent effects on this palladium‐catalysed process in the presence of 1,2‐bis‐di‐tert‐butylphosphin‐oxylene (dtbpx) ligands, which allow adipate diester formation from 1,3‐butadiene, carbon monoxide, and methanol with 97 % selectivity and 100 % atom‐economy under scalable conditions. Under optimal conditions a variety of di‐ and triesters from 1,2‐ and 1,3‐dienes can be obtained in good to excellent yields.

Abstract
![]()
Alkoxycarbonylations
are important and versatile reactions that
result in the formation of a new C–C bond. Herein, we report
on a new and halide-free alkoxycarbonylation reaction that does not
require the application of an external carbon monoxide atmosphere.
Instead, manganese carbonyl complexes and organo(alkoxy)borate salts
react to form an ester product containing the target C–C bond.
The required organo(alkoxy)borate salts are conveniently generated
from the stoichiometric reaction of an organoborane and an alkoxide
salt and can be telescoped without purification. The protocol leads
to the formation of both aromatic and aliphatic esters and gives complete
control over the ester’s substitution (e.g., OMe, OtBu, OPh). A reaction mechanism was proposed on the
basis of stoichiometric reactivity studies, spectroscopy, and DFT
calculations. The new chemistry is particularly relevant for the field
of Mn(I) catalysis and clearly points to a potential pathway toward
irreversible catalyst deactivation.

Abstract
A copper-catalyzed carbonylative borylation of unactivated alkyl halides has been developed, enabling efficient synthesis of aliphatic potassium acyltrifluoroborates (KATs) in high yields by treating the in situ formed tetracoordinated acylboron intermediates with aqueous KHF2 . A variety of functional groups are tolerated under the mild reaction conditions, and primary, secondary, and tertiary alkyl halides are all applicable. In addition, this method also provides facile access to N-methyliminodiacetyl (MIDA) acylboronates as well as α-methylated potassium acyltrifluoroborates in a one-pot manner. Mechanistic studies indicate a radical atom transfer carbonylation (ATC) mechanism to form acyl halide intermediates that are subsequently borylated by (NHC)CuBpin.
