Abstract
We describe early and recent advances in the fascinating field of combined magnetic and optical properties of inorganic coordination compounds and in particular of 3d-4f single molecule magnets. We cover various applied techniques which allow for the correlation of results obtained in the frequency and time domain in order to highlight the specific properties of these compounds and the future challenges towards multidimensional spectroscopic tools. An important point is to understand the details of the interplay of magnetic and optical properties through performing time-resolved studies in the presence of external fields especially magnetic ones. This will enable further exploration of this fundamental interactions i. e. the two components of electromagnetic radiation influencing optical properties.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of three neutral complexes with different coordination modes of a di-silylated metalloid germanium cluster to divalent lanthanides [(thf)5Ln(ηn-Ge9(Hyp)2)] (Ln = Yb (1, n = 1); Eu (2, n = 2, 3), Sm (3, n = 2, 3); Hyp = Si(SiMe3)3) by the salt metathesis of LnI2 with K2[Ge9(Hyp)2] in THF. The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In thf solution, the formation of contact or solvate-separated ion pairs depending on the concentration is assumed. Compound 2 exhibits a blue luminescence typical for Eu2+. The solid-state magnetic measurements of compounds 2 and 3 confirm the presence of divalent europium and samarium, respectively.

Abstract
We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy results of a {Ni2Dy2}‐compound in DMF, which can be considered as a prototypic molecule for single molecule magnets. We apply state‐of‐the‐art ab initio quantum chemistry to quantitatively describe the optical properties of an inorganic complex system comprising ten atoms to form the chromophoric unit, which is further stabilized by surrounding ligands. Two different basis sets are used for the calculations to specifically identify two dominant peaks in the ground state. Furthermore, we theoretically propagate the compound's correlated many‐body wavefunction under the influence of a laser pulse as well as relaxation processes and compare against the time‐resolved absorption spectra. The experimental data can be described with a time constant of several hundreds of femtoseconds attributed to vibrational relaxation and trapping into states localized within the band gap. A second time constant is ascribed to the excited state while trap states show lifetimes on a longer timescale. The theoretical propagation is performed with the density‐matrix formalism and the Lindblad superoperator, which couples the system to a thermal bath, allowing us to extract relaxation times from first principles.

Abstract
Reduction chemistry induced by divalent lanthanides has been primarily focused on samarium so far. In light of the rich physical properties of the lanthanides, this limitation to one element is a drawback. Since molecular divalent compounds of almost all lanthanides have been available for some time, we used one known and two new non‐classical reducing agents of the early lanthanides to establish a sophisticated reduction chemistry. As a result, six new d/f‐polyphosphides or d/f‐polyarsenides, [K(18‐crown‐6)] [Cp′′2Ln(E5)FeCp*] (Ln=La, Ce, Nd; E=P, As) were obtained. Their reactivity was studied by activation of P4, resulting in a selective expansion of the P5 rings. The obtained compounds [K(18‐crown‐6)] [Cp′′2Ln(P7)FeCp*] (Ln=La, Nd) are the first examples of an activation of P4 by a f‐element‐polypnictide complex. Additionally, the first systematic femtosecond (fs)‐spectroscopy investigations of d/f‐polypnictides are presented to showcase the advantages of having access to a broader series of lanthanide compounds.

Abstract
The unique three-dimensional structure of spherical, homoatomic nine-atom germanium clusters opens various possibilities for the spatial arrangement of functional groups. Ligands comprising lone pairs have recently been introduced in the cluster sphere, and we now report the addition of a boranyl group to the cluster featuring a Ge-B exo-cluster bond. The reaction of the twofold-silylated cluster [Ge9 {Si(TMS)3 }2 ]2- (TMS=trimethylsilyl) with 2-chloro-1,3,2-diazaborolidines DABR -Cl leads to the first boranyl-functionalized [Ge9 ] clusters [Ge9 {Si(TMS)3 }2 DABR ]- (R=methyl (1 a), iso-propyl (2 a), ortho-tolyl (3 a)). The anions 2 a and 3 a were structurally characterized as [NHCDipp Cu]+ complexes (NHCDipp =1,3-di(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolylidine) through single crystal X-ray structure determination. Quantum-chemical calculations manifest the frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) character of the boranyl-functionalized cluster [Ge9 {Si(TMS)3 }2 BCy2 ]- (4 a).

Abstract
We describe the reactivity of the hypersilyl-functionalized Zintl cluster salt K[Ge9(Hyp)3] towards the nickel reagents Ni(COD)2 and Ni(Cp)2, which gives rise to markedly different complexes. In the case of Ni(COD)2 (COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene), a dianionic sandwich-like cluster [Ni{Ge9(Hyp)3}2]2- (1) was obtained, in line with a simple ligand substitution reaction of COD by [Ge9(Hyp)3]-. By contrast, when an analogous reaction with Ni(Cp)2 (Cp = cyclopentadienyl) was performed, vertex substitution of the [Ge9(Hyp)3]- precursor was observed, giving rise to the nine-vertex nido-cluster (Cp)Ni[Ge8(Hyp)3] (2). This is the first instance of vertex substitution at a hypersilyl-functionalized Zintl cluster cage. The electrochemical behavior of these compounds was explored and showed reversible redox behaviour for both clusters.

Abstract
We report on the synthesis of an alkane-soluble Zintl cluster, [η4-Ge9(Hyp)3]Rh(COD), that can catalytically hydrogenate cyclic alkenes such as 1,5-cyclooctadiene and cis-cyclooctene. This is the first example of a well-defined Zintl-cluster-based homogeneous catalyst.

Abstract
We present a comprehensive femtosecond (fs) transient absorption study of the [Ge9(Hyp)3]− (Hyp = Si(SiMe3)3) cluster solvated in tetrahydrofuran (THF) with special emphasis on intra- and intermolecular charge transfer mechanisms which can be tuned by exchange of the counterion and by dimerization of the cluster. The examination of the visible and the near infrared (NIR) spectral range reveals four different processes of cluster dynamics after UV (267/258 nm) photoexcitation related to charge transfer to solvent and localized excited states in the cluster. The resulting transient absorption is mainly observed in the NIR region. In the UV-Vis range transient absorption of the (neutral) cluster core with similar dynamics can be observed. By transferring concepts of: (i) charge transfer to the solvent known from solvated Na− in THF and (ii) charge transfer in bulk-like materials on metalloid cluster systems containing [Ge9(Hyp)3]− moieties, we can nicely interpret the experimental findings for the different compounds. The first process occurs on a fs timescale and is attributed to localization of the excited electron in the quasi-conduction band/excited state which competes with a charge transfer to the solvent. The latter leads to an excess electron initially located in the vicinity of the parent cluster within the same solvent shell. In a second step, it can recombine with the cluster core with time constants in the picosecond (ps) timescale. Some electrons can escape the influence of the cluster leading to a solvated electron or after interaction with a cation to a contact pair both with lifetimes exceeding our experimentally accessible time window of 1 nanosecond (ns). An additional time constant on a tens of ps timescale is pronounced in the UV-Vis range which can be attributed to the recombination rate of the excited state or quasi conduction band of Ge9−. In the dimer, the excess electron cannot escape the molecule due to strong trapping by the Zn cation that links the two cluster cores.
